Heidelberg extends usagebased contract portfolio New variants of the digital subscription model boost the portfolio’s appeal. As it continues to pursue its digital transformation, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is setting out to rapidly and consistently extend its usage-based contract portfolio and expand its digital business models with repeat sales. Customers that have previously signed a subscription contract with Heidelberg are benefiting from clear improvements in their value-added processes and significant performance gains. Heidelberg has therefore started to launch additional versions of the subscription model onto the market so that even more customers can benefit from the advantages the portfolio offers.
Subscription customers benefit consistently from improved performance
During an international media event hosted by the Klampfer Group in St. Ruprecht an der Raab, Austria, Heidelberg highlighted the successful launch of “Heidelberg Subscription” in its eastern European sales region.
“Heidelberg Subscription” is exactly what the industry has been waiting for. To date, Heidelberg has signed contracts in the mid-double-digit range with equal numbers of customers from the commercial and packaging sectors. The customers who have opted to take out a “Heidelberg Subscription” have to one extent or another recorded a clear improvement in their overall equipment effectiveness thanks to some significant performance increases in terms of makeready times, printing speed, paper waste, and the overall productivity of their processes.
To ensure even more print shops can benefit from the portfolio’s advantages, Heidelberg is further extending the appeal of the program. For example, for a monthly, usage-based fee, print shops with a subscription contract can acquire the Prinect software functions that they actually need, without having to purchase individual licenses. The same applies to machine maintenance and consumables supplies for both pre-existing machines and new machinery purchased in the conventional way. There are also freemium offerings that Heidelberg customers can use without having to pay anything, such as certain basic functions from Heidelberg Assistant. Under the top configuration level of the portfolio, Heidelberg supplies customers with all the necessary equipment, software, and consumables – such as printing plates, inks, coatings, wash-up solutions, and blankets – as well as a comprehensive range of services geared to availability. Customers pay for the sheets they print. If they so wish, Heidelberg will also take care of all aspects of logistics operations for consumables as part of a subscription package (“Vendor Managed Inventory”). The terms of the individual contracts are variable. “By extending our subscription offerings, we are going to ensure virtually all print shops can benefit

from the advantages of a pay-per-use approach in one way or another,” explains Professor Ulrich Hermann, member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “Regardless of which package a customer opts for, they always pay for the actual benefits they enjoy. Through this approach, we aim to significantly improve performance for our customers – the interests of both the customer and Heidelberg are aligned under this model.”
Portfolio proving very popular in eastern Europe During an international media event hosted by the Klampfer Group in St. Ruprecht an der Raab, Austria, Heidelberg highlighted the successful launch of “Heidelberg
Subscription” in its eastern European sales region. The portfolio has already been successfully introduced with customers from various market segments in Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and Turkey and is underpinning the strong order volume in the region. It also covers all the press formats offered by Heidelberg, including the very large format being used by a Turkish packaging printer. “Our subscription portfolio is generating a great deal of interest from customers in the growth markets of eastern Europe. That is why we are planning to extend the offering step by step to other countries in the region and are anticipating continued strong demand from customers. It is becoming increasingly clear that these new digital business models are helping
us to compensate ever more effectively for fluctuations in order volumes that are linked to economic developments,” continues Hermann.
Contract business is a central pillar of the company’s digital transformation By consistently and comprehensively expanding its usage-based contract business, Heidelberg is accelerating both its own digital transformation and that of the industry as a whole, thereby reducing its exposure to economic fluctuations. In the future, contracts like these are to set to account for around a third of overall net sales. Heidelberg will also be showcasing additional digital contract model innovations at the upcoming drupa 2020 trade fair.

take in averages 30-60 minutes, often with the extrusion line being stopped. Automated cleaning with Baldwin’s FilmCylinderCleaning only takes 2 to 3 minutes. Also new to the plastic film industry and presented at K 2019, is a new generation of Ahlbrandt Corona technologies. The highly energy efficient Ahlbrandt Corona surface treatment feature top-of the lineperforming electrodes, ensuring enhanced ink and glue adhesion leading to flawless printing and laminating results. Due to its innovative solutions for fast and easy service, electrodes can be changed in just a few seconds, maximizing the production uptime. The precise Ahlbrandt Rotor Spray coating secures a film quality with long term antifog properties and release for demolding thermoformed parts. Utilizing a non-contact application technology, it saves both chemistry and energy consumption and unlike other processes, there is no harm to any recycling of the finished film.
The high-efficiency Ahlbrandt Hot Air Dryer solutions are specially designed for drying of plastic films at low temperature and at top production speeds with optimum edge-toedge evenness. Baldwin’s innovations deliver complete process enhancement for flexible film and sheet extrusion production as well as excellent print results. By empowering the quality of film characteristics for a flawless product and improving the overall quality, process productivity and energy efficiency, the production will be more profitable and sustainable.

New Research identifies benefits of Print Reading on paper allows for deeper comprehension and retention, concentration, vocabulary building and memory, recent studies show. Intergraf calls on policymakers and educational organisations at EU and national level to ensure that print has its role in education.
Although the use of digital devices for reading continues to increase, new research reveals that readers’ comprehension is better when reading from paper. A meta-study of 54 studies with more than 170,000 participants has demonstrated that comprehension of long-form informational text is stronger when reading on paper than on screens, particularly when the reader is under time pressure. The meta-study also found that digital environments continue to pose challenges. Readers are more likely to be overconfident about their comprehension abilities when reading digitally than when reading print, in particular when under time pressure, leading to more skimming and less concentration on reading matter. Contrary to the widely held belief, the study finds that the screen inferiority effects of ‘digital natives’ have increased rather than decreased over time, regardless of age group and of prior experience with digital environments. That is why Intergraf highly recommends prioritising print reading over digital reading in schools unless there is a proven learning advantage of digital. Inaction risks a degradation of students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, which could hinder the development of educated, critical thinking citizens in our society for decades. Intergraf is the European federation for print and digital communication. The Brussels-based trade association represents employers in the European printing industry. It represents 21 national

Bartaman Patrika is a publication founded as recently as 1984, and which has now become the secondlargest daily newspaper in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is published in Bengali, appears in five different regional editions, and has a circulation totalling more than 670,000 copies (2017). There are five printing sites: Kolkata, the state capital, along with the cities of Malda, Midnapore, Burdwan and Siliguri. Sprawling Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) west of the Ganges delta is India’s third-largest metropolis, with 14.1 million inhabitants (2011). Regional daily newspapers in the various Indian languages (Bengali but also Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and Sanskrit) are a flourishing and highly dynamic market segment that has seen annual growth averaging eight per cent in recent years: nine out of of India’s ten largest dailies are regional newspapers.
The country’s size and occasionally difficult logistics circumstances give rise to numerous newspaper printing plants producing regional editions mainly on smaller, Asian-built presses.
Fits Indian requirements In 2018, Bartaman Pvt. Ltd. decided upon major investment in a new Kolkata printing plant. To this end, capital was ploughed into technology from European manufacturers. In printing, for example, that came in the form of a Manroland Cromoman 4-1 newspaper press with three towers for printing up to 24 pages each. This is the fourth such machine to arrive in India and is adapted to regional conditions: designed to stand on a ground floor so it will fit inside existing production premises, tolerant of fluctuating power supply voltage, and capable of handling the newsprint paper available in India. Likewise adapted to the special requirements of Indian customers is the mailroom system from Ferag, a supplier newly chosen by Bartaman Pvt. Ltd. to equip its Kolkata operation. The scope of supply included:

Seen as superior Concerning reasons for the successful West Bengal publishing house choosing Ferag technology for the first time, Bartamans director Abhijit Bhattacharya says: “The selection criteria for mailroom technology included the suppliers’ production operations, their hardware and software technical solutions, and the services on offer both during and after installation.” After visiting several Ferag users and on account
of feedback received, the Ferag mailroom system could be seen as superior to all the other systems available. Abhijit Bhattacharya continues: “The entire purchasing process was most satisfactory, from the quotation to the technology being delivered at the installation site. Every aspect was handled very professionally, with clear communication of all the pre-installation requirements to be fulfilled. The installation itself then went ahead perfectly and within the specified time frame.”
“Total endorsement” After just a few months under construction, the new printing plant began operating in May 2019. With regard to the experience gained with Ferag technology, Abhijit Bhattacharya adds that “Output is excellent.”
Even the most minor of problems was solved promptly and with the necessary support from Ferag engineers. “All in all, we see it as total endorsement of our decision to invest in this system.” Ferag AG, with its headquarters at Hinwil in Switzerland, has for over 60 years been known and respected in the printing industry for high quality postpress processing and direct mailing systems. Ferag is also a specialist in innovative conveyor and processing technology for the most varied industrial applications and goods distribution systems. Through its worldwide sales organization, the company is active in more than 20 countries with its own sales and service companies or agencies.

Future of Packaging Industry in India World of Paper is a platform which aims to bring together the experts from Paper, Printing, Packaging, Publishing and Allied Industries. India is among the fastest growing economies. With increasing prosperity, both the desire and the need for modern packaging solutions emerges. Paper packaging is a versatile and cost-efficient method to protect, preserve, and transport a wide range of products. Attributes, like lightweight, biodegradability, and recyclability, are the advantages of paper packaging that make them an essential component in today’s modern life. The largest end-user industries for the global packaging demand arises from food, beverages, consumer products and industrial/bulk packaging. The rising consumer consciousness, regarding sustainable packaging, along with the strict regulations being imposed by various environmental protection agencies, regarding the use of environment-friendly packaging products, is driving the market for paper packaging. The growing demand for flexible paper packaging due to the rise in consumer awareness regarding the harmful effects of plastic on the environment is helping the paper packaging industry to grow. A study by trade and commerce trade association Assocham and global consulting firm EY revealed that the packaging industry in India is anticipated to reach $73.6bn by the 2020 financial year (FY2020), due to India’s growing population and income levels. The conclusions drawn are therefore supportive of a continued expansion of the paper packaging demand globally, especially in the high growth regions of the world.

Kalyan, with his long experience in the newspaper market supports our presence and focus in the newspaper & Publication market.” Trelleborg is increasingly tailoring offset printing blanket solutions to suit Indian printer’s requirements and over the last few years it has been working closely with newspaper groups to understand the needs of their pressrooms to provide blanket solutions that improve productivity while maintaining consistent quality and cost.
them into India with modifications to local requirements. Trelleborg has developed several easy-touse, downloadable software tools, including a ‘configuration’ product that lets users select the correct blanket by entering the application sector, such as web coldset, web heatset, single-width, double-width, combi or UV. Trelleborg has a well established network of experienced Dealer partners throughout India that provide local, on-site support and the company has developed a dealer locator App that offers a simple way of finding the nearest dealer. “The comprehensive work carried out at Trelleborg’s extensive R&D facilities at the Lodi Vecchio manufacturing facility in Italy has created offset blanket solutions that match the specific needs of the Indian newspaper market,” continues Bora, who has more than 25 years of experience in this sector. “Printers need the flexibility to customize blankets according to the type of stock they are handling, the press being used and other relevant factors such as press age etc.
printing industry with training, advice and after-sales support that is unrivalled. The blanket is crucial to the profitability of the press and we increasingly help newspaper groups use blanket technology to reduce cost-per-copy on their presses. Our experts provide training on selecting the correct blanket, settings on the press, and maintenance and storage of fabric-backed and metal-backed products.” “An in-depth knowledge is becoming even more important because of the rapidly changing landscape in the industry. For instance, the growing use of different stocks that have their own surface characteristics, the implementation of UV / LED, high-density pigment inks, neutral founts, FM screening, coatings, primers and more have a major impact on the printing process and the printing blanket.” Visitors to WAN IFRA 2019 saw all these product and solutions as well as met the Trelleborg Team – Maniraju Bora, Sandeep Gupta and Kalyan Mushari, at Trelleborg booth 1.3.

Quality and Consistency: EFI Nozomi C18000 EFI Nozomi C18000 is 1st single-pass digital corrugated printer to achieve Fogra Certification. Dr. Andreas Kraushaar, head of the Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies prepress department, certified the EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass corrugated printer from Electronics For Imaging, Inc. as Fogra compliant. The ultra-high-speed, single-pass direct-to-board digital printer passed the Fogra Process Standard Digital Print Check this summer and is the first such printer to do so. Developed by Fogra, the Process Standard Digital (PSD) represents an industrially orientated and standardized procedure for the creation of digital print products. With a PSD certificate, packaging converters and corrugated display manufacturers using the Nozomi C18000 printer have additional, proven verification of the quality and reliability of their digital production offering. Successful implementation of the PSD can also help Nozomi C18000 users – a group that includes many of the world’s leading packaging companies – with reduced manufacturing cost and waste, higher quality and time performance, and better overall sustainability in corrugated production.
“EFI has been an active member of Fogra for many years and contributed to the development of the Fogra Process Standard Digital,” said Kraushaar. “That is why I am not surprised to see the Nozomi C18000 passing the Print Check Criteria for both Fogra and GRACoL standards so seamlessly.” The PSD Print Check is part of the ISO/TS 15311-2 based Fogra PSD. This specification allows companies in the print and media industry to prove their ability to create print jobs conforming to PSD. At EFI’s facility, Fogra reviewed a typical print job for colour consistency, uniformity, detail sharpness and print run stability, in compliance with the requirements defined by PSD. “The certification of the Nozomi C18000 printer’s output quality by Fogra proves
once again EFI’s approach to delivering superior quality – which gives customers confidence for day-to-day operation,” said José Luis Ramón Moreno, vice president and general manager, EFI Industrial Printing. “This certificate ensures that Nozomi C18000 printer output meets customer expectations in the corrugated packaging and display industry regarding gamut, fidelity, precision and repeatability.” Fogra is one of the leading print research institutes worldwide, serving the print and media industry since 1951. Fogra uniquely features the combination of applied research and qualifying software, hardware and “brainware.” The organization also is an active member of the ISO technical committee 130.
This summer, Kraushaar and his research team tested the LED-inkjet corrugated printer at EFI Industrial Printing facilities in Almassora, Spain, verifying the Nozomi C18000 printer’s output process control, color fidelity and workflow. The Fogra team tested against the FOGRA39 standard, as well as the GRACoL/SWOP standard from U.S. industry association Idealliance, and determined that the printer successfully passed all the tests and requirements. Dr. Andreas Kraushaar, head of Fogra´s prepress department, congratulates Josep Marin Felipe, EFI Nozomi marketing product manager, for the successful certification of EFI Nozomi C18000 according to the Fogra PSD Print Check Digital.

Packaging in an E-Commerce World. Digital pre-print opens a new era for brand protection and brand activation in e-commerce. - By Anja Röhrle: Marketing & Communication Manager, DS Smith.
Continuing boom in e-commerce has fuelled the surge in parcel volume which is expected to exceed 100 billion parcels by 2020 in thirteen industrial nations. Such growth shows that Packaging has long since emerged as a key component in the e-commerce logistics chain.
Key Notes : > DS Smith’s Made2fit packaging solution ensures that package sizes can be adjusted according to the volume of the products to be shipped. > The clever boxin-box system guarantees that the online shopper will remember the unboxing of the product as part of a positive brand experience. > With mosaic printing, individual shippingpackages with unique design in digital pre-print can produce thousands of unique copies in just one print run.
28
September 2019
“Digital pre-print opens a new era for brand protection and brand activation in e-commerce. Smart, digitally printed corrugated cardboard packaging solutions inform, entertain and network the shopper. They warn of product counterfeiting and guarantee transparency in shipment and traceability. All this is now possible not only for short, but also for medium and long print runs. Hence, there is almost a paradox: that of individualised mass production.” The ongoing digitalisation and the associated changes in consumer shopping behaviour have a major impact on the design and construction of packaging. Mass-produced products lose their attractiveness. Brand manufacturers, retailers and logistics providers are adapting to the new challenges of online trading. They receive strong impetus from the packaging industry, which has a lot to offer when it comes to e-commerce packaging made of corrugated board with innovative solutions and stateof-the-art print technologies. 74.4 billion: this is the number of shipments that courier, express and parcel (CEP) services carried worldwide in 2017, according to the latest figures in the annual Pitney Bows Parcel Shipping Index; roughly 17 percent more than in the previous year. This surge in parcel volume is being fuelled by the continuing boom in e-commerce. Already by 2020, it is expected to exceed 100 billion parcels in the thirteen industrial nations surveyed. In view of such volumes and growth rates, it becomes clear: Packaging has long since emerged as a key component in the e-commerce logistics chain.
The Empty Space Economy The report “The Empty Space Economy”, drawn up by Forbes Insights in collaboration with the international packaging specialist DS Smith, reveals that nearly every package shipped online contains empty space. 60 percent of executives surveyed felt that more than a quarter of what is sent to customers in transport packaging is in fact thin air. An enormous amount of extra material is used - both for the overbox and the filling material. Consumers are becoming more and more critical of this. Brand manufacturers and retailers are also increasingly addressing the issue of packaging optimisation. The reasons are obvious: lower material and logistics costs, less transport damage, more sustainability and an improved customer experience.
Tailor-Made for Every Channel The development of optimised e-commerce packaging solutions from corrugated board is by no means trivial. They pass through a completely different supply-cycle than goods that go into retail. There is often a lack of reliable data to provide information on the actual loads during transport. Online shipping places the highest demands on the packaging, as the goods are not only expected to arrive at the customer undamaged but also ideally to inspire the customer about the product and brand in such a way that they will share this positively on their social media channels. DS Smith started early to deal with the peculiarities of the delivery cycle, the trends and insights around e-commerce. Today, in addition to its extensive know-how, the company has developed and offers a whole range of special e-commerce solutions and
pressideas/ plc
innovative technologies. These include the exclusive DISCSTM testing standard, which simulates the real loads within the so-called ‘last mile’ and, on the basis of the knowledge gained, allows the material and design of the packaging to be matched to the respective supply-cycle and its specific requirements. The innovative Made2fit packaging solution ensures, for example, that package sizes can be adjusted manually or fully automatically according to the volume of the products to be shipped. And this is possible in all three dimensions.
E-Commerce is Slimming Down Innovations like these generate real addedvalue in the e-commerce supply-cycle. As online distribution becomes more and more important for the consumer goods industry, there are hardly any manufacturers who do not need special e-commerce packaging for their products in order to optimise their processes. Single-item shipments lead to new challenges in fulfilment. To streamline processes, packaging specialists like DS Smith came up with a number of great ideas. The e@Box, for example, combines product packaging and overpack. On-site filling of the boxes with the branded product takes place directly at the manufacturer‘s premises. This saves valuable time and cost in logistics. At the same time, the all-in-one solution for shipping single items always has the right size and strength - regardless of whether cosmetic products, chocolates, shoes or cordless drills are shipped with it. In addition to high product-protection and convenient handling, the clever box-in-box system guarantees one thing above all: that the online shopper will remember the unboxing of the product as part of a positive brand experience.
Brand Activation in Focus Product lifecycles are getting shorter and shorter, also because start-up companies are launching ever new, ever more stylish products onto the market. Mass-produced products lose their attractiveness. Shoppers‘ brand loyalty is fading and eco-sustainability aspects are becoming increasingly important. All this creates new challenges for the industry. Today‘s customers want to be inspired and courted by individualised products that are as sustainable as possible. It is more important than ever to focus on the customer and tailor business processes,
products and shopping experiences to their needs. And this is precisely where transportpackaging made of corrugated board can bring strong, new accents to a manufaturer’s brand. When it comes to customer centricity, digital pre-print and its associated flexibility open up a new dimension of interaction. And this is no longer true only for short, but now also for medium and long print runs. Attention-grabbing interior prints and seasonal campaign motifs also enable a differentiated and more emotional customer approach in e-commerce. Smart packaging informs, entertains and networks the online shopper. A scan of printed Quick Response Codes, for example, can provide information about growth areas, as well as tips for the optimal preparation of the product ordered online. In the same way, consumers can gain access to bonus programs or social media platforms where influencers showcase the product or provide helpful video tutorials, for example on make-up applications, as well as on the installation or commissioning of complex products. Thanks to so-called mosaic printing, even individual shipping-packages can each be given a unique, individual design in digital pre-print. Thus, thousands of unique copies are produced in just one print run. Even last-minute changes of the artwork are now easier, because printing plates are simply no longer necessary.
Brand Protection: Secure QR Codes and Watermarks Provide Security
offer in terms of brand-protection: secure QR codes are not replicable and provide a reliable method of verifying whether a product is genuine or counterfeit. It makes sense to combine this with a tamper-evident closure on the corrugated cardboard transport packaging. Printed, serialised codes allow packaging to be tracked, but also verified. In addition, this can be used to “marry” product and packaging with each other, for example to record individual batch numbers, production data and production times. This also makes traceability much easier to implement in the event of a recall. Watermarks can also be printed on the transport packaging in digital pre-print, which enables hidden coding in the printed image. When used selectively, this can in turn be used to check whether it is an original product or not.
Next Stop: Omnichannel Packaging Modern technologies and changing consumer habits are bringing about constant changes in e-commerce. Offline and online are increasingly blending into each other. Already today, industry, physical retail and pure online players are investing in the development and expansion of their omnichannel initiatives. The relentless, continuing networking of the online and offline worlds has far-reaching effects on the entire supply cycle. In the packaging sector in particular, there will be more and more demand for comprehensive, integrated solutions that work equally well on storeshelves and in online retailing.
Digital printing technology also has a lot to

Future of Reading Although the advent of digital technologies has brought with it many advantages in the way we communicate, study or do business, traditional media still remains indispensable for us. New media uses a variety of digital technologies, that provide us with limitless onscreen possibilities. Digitisation and digital technologies have been incorporated into the education system, too. New ways to use digital tools in teaching and learning have fostered a lot of discussions around teaching methods utilising digital tools. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. An independent academic study was carried out to understand the impact of digitalisation on reading practices, particularly in children
and young adults, under the COST Action E-READ initiative. This research found out that print readers have a better recall of temporal relations between events and are able to reconstruct more correctly the plot of a text than screen readers. E-READ also found out that paper remains a better support, especially for long text, since it encourages deeper comprehension and retention. If we do not act urgently, we could be faced with serious longterm consequences for reading comprehension and critical thinking due to reading on a screen being encouraged by schools and the media. Policymakers, schools, educators and parents across Europe should be aware that
reading on screen without the necessary supporting tools hinders children and young people’s learning potential. It is clear that there still remains an important place for print media in our digital world, which is critical for the development of educated, critical citizens in our society.

Siegwerk showcases tailor-made ink and service portfolio With the motto, “Focused on your needs” Siegwerk addresses current and future packaging trends at Labelexpo Europe 2019. Siegwerk, global provider of printing inks for packaging applications and labels, exhibiting at Labelexpo Europe 2019, provided a combination of its best performing inks, industry standard product safety and knowledgeable guidance and support. Siegwerk experts discussed label and package printing innovations and visitors learnt more about the compay’s broad offering including cutting-edge ink solutions. “It’s Siegwerk’s goal to provide our customers with the most efficient ink solutions and support for their individual situations, by being ‘Focused on your needs’,” explains Guido Lander, Vice President Business Unit Narrow Web EMEA at Siegwerk. “At this year’s booth we highlighted our expertise in trending topics like shrink sleeves, plastic tubes and laminates, digital printing as well as upcoming requirements from brand owners regarding sustainable ink solutions and how Siegwerk’s product portfolio enables an efficient recycling of printed films. Visitors got in touch with our experts to learn more about our latest ink developments and how we can meet their individual needs and challenges. Siegwerk attaches great importance to open dialog with its customers. Understanding their needs is key to the company identifying trending topics and open issues that enable
it to channel its research and development activities into the market segments of the future. “That’s why platforms like LABELEXPO are ideal touchpoints for us to share ideas and discuss the latest challenges and requirements with our customers and other industry experts,” adds Guido Lander.
Leading ink solutions for sleeve production The all-round labelling of containers using sleeves is a growing trend in packaging today as it offers more design opportunities than standard labels. But the sleeve production is a fully developed and complex process and printing inks for sleeves must meet strict requirements, regardless of whether the tube is printed with UV ink or solvent ink. At Labelexpo, Siegwerk presented its broad range of UV, LED UV and solvent-based ink systems and special whites for all printing technologies suitable for sleeves used for non-food and food packaging applications. All inks and whites are always available as both standard and low migration ink systems.
New ink developments for plastic tubes and laminates Plastic tubes and laminates (PTL) are challenging packaging structures especially demanding highly reactive ink series with
good adhesion mainly on pre-treated Polyethylene and Polypropylene covering many types of printing processes. Overprint varnishes for PTL manufacturing must offer high chemical resistance to various kinds of filling goods, high scuff resistance as well as good surface slip properties for processing the tubes in filling lines. Optimal post-decoration properties are required for hot-foil stamping or screen printing which often gets applied on top of the tube coating. Siegwerk offers a wide range of specialty solutions for high-end packaging today. Its specialty UV varnishes can be applied on various laminates and tubes based on plastic substrates like PE, PP, ABS, PC and PS. At Labelexpo, the company presented a new ink development especially for the PTL segment, Sicura Nutritube, a new low migration ink series for dry offset printing is designed for extruded (pre-formed) tubes as well as laminated tubes in web printing.
New digital printing opportunities for labels and packaging Siegwerk has a strong footprint in digital printing offering customized ink solutions to end users’ final application requirements. UV inkjet allows for direct print on 3D objects which increases brand differentiation, helps packaging producers to save labeling materials, reduces waste and achieves overall leaner processes. At Labelexpo, Siegwerk presented its inkjet ink portfolio for a wide range of applications including food, pharma as well as household, hygiene and industrial packaging.
Sustainable ink solutions for an optimized packaging recyclability in a circular economy As one of the leaders in product safety and sustainability, Siegwerk is driving the development of eco-friendly inks. Assessing ways of enhancing the ecological footprint of the company’s inks, with no loss of performance, is one of its key research and development efforts. During the Labelexpo Siegwerk presented for the first time a newly developed product systems which allows for complete de-inking of printed films as

they are used for labels, shrink sleeves and other applications, leading to a complete “clean/virgin” recycling of the transparent film in a later process. With SICURA Low NRGY UV/LED UV the company offers a newly developed UV/LED UV offset ink system with impressive deinking properties even comparable to the deinkability of
conventional oil-based sheetfed offset inks. Besides, customers find water- and solvent based ink series that are compostable according to DIN EN 13432. With its ink series Sicura Litho NutriEco Siegwerk also markets the world’s first low migration UV ink range for cosmetics and food applications that has been awarded the Gold status
of the “Cradle to Cradle® Material Health Certification” by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). These inks are safe for recycling processes and adhere to the circular economy approach. These are just a few examples of Siegwerk’s innovative and sustainable ink solutions that were presented at the show.

Edale celebrates 75 years by cutting 10,000 Kg waste at Labelexpo A by-product of not running a single demo press at label expo was that we saved the equivalent of running an average household for 50 days, says James Boughton, MD, Edale.
For everyone who visited Edale’s stand at Labelexpo, apart from the company’s distinctive orange livery, the first thing you would have noticed was there was no running press. James Boughton Edale’s Managing Director explains what seems quite a controversial decision. “Labelexpo is an exhibition based around label printing and converting, and quite honestly as a manufacturer of printing presses if you cannot print you should not even be there. The Edale FL range has been producing award winning print quality for over 10 years so our printing capability has never been in question. The bigger issue in the market place today is how to reduce the unnecessary waste. Whilst 75 years old Edale’s has quite a young management team and the environmental issues discussed on a daily basis are something we feel strongly about and want to help by reducing our own environmental impact, albeit in a small way.” By not running a press Edale saved more than 10,000KG of waste that would otherwise have been destined for landfill without fulfilling any purpose. If you extrapolate this for the top 10 press manufacturers at the show with each of these running two machines a total of 200,000KG would be sent for waste. James continues, “this waste is produced unnecessarily in our opinion and is only produced in the pursuit of profit

with total disregard for the environment. As a company we want to be “green”. We are constantly using technology in our presses to reduce waste on set-up, by having the EZ REG Autonomous registration system along with the EZ DIE quick change die station waste is taken away from the operator’s control allowing for consistent and low waste figures.” Edale is constantly looking at ways to improve its carbon footprint; the latest demonstration press to be installed in their showroom has LED curing. Having extensively researched the market, Edale has chosen its partner based on the fact that an astonishing 90% power saving can be achieved over conventional UV ARC systems, which results in a 75% overall power saving when taking the press and curing into account. James says, “Power is a major concern and will only get worse as the years pass by, power will not get cheaper it will only get more expensive. A by-product of not running a single demo press at label expo was that we saved the equivalent of running an average household for 50 days.” Edale’s latest “ECO” innovation was prompted by one of their customers who has re-purposed many of the wooden shipping containers into work benches and furniture. Edale presses shipped in 2020 will include “Ikea Style” drawings detailing how to convert
the packing cases into an “EZ BENCH” for the quick-change die cutting system. James finally states, “Going green is not easy and will take time for a company like Edale, however there is a common misunderstanding that going “green” impedes business performance. This is not true, because our decision not to print waste at the show did not affect the number of leads generated and 2020 looks set to match the record growth and sales to be achieved in 2019, perhaps not something all analogue press manufacturers can claim.” 2020 marks a major milestone as Edale celebrates its 75th birthday. “We may not have grown quickly, nor huge, but we have been a constant from the start as a stable and reliable partner for label converters all around the World, a World that in our own small way are trying to protect,” he concludes.

Industry and NGOs pressing EU on Printed Food Packaging Industry and NGOs are pressing the EU to adopt harmonised rules on printed food contact packaging. Although industry relies on recognised standards and national legislation, as well as harmonised good manufacturing practices (GMPs) across Europe, the food packaging value chain is calling on European regulators to present a proposal for a new printed Food Contact Regulation as was announced by the European Commission a couple of years ago. “The European Commission had committed to present a draft proposal for a Regulation on Printed Food Contact Materials in 2018. It is now on hold, pending the completion of the evaluation of existing EU food contact
legislation, with the risk that Member States present national measures.” Laetitia Reynaud, Policy Advisor, Intergraf With the single-use plastics legislation adopted earlier this year, alternative packaging materials for food contact applications like paper and board are now further being explored by industry and consequently are also under the radar of consumer protection organisations. In July, BEUC, the European Consumer Organisation, published a press release claiming that printed paper and board food packaging may contain and release harmful chemicals. They published the result of tests of 76 samples of printed paper or board food packaging, including coffee cups,
paper straws, printed napkins and grocery products. The tests have been carried out by 4 consumer organisations based in Italy, Spain, Denmark and Norway. They investigated the presence of primary aromatic amines and photoinitiators. Industry deplores that no information is available on the tests and samples used. For instance, no information is available on whether these samples have been manufactured in Europe or outside of Europe. Nevertheless the conclusion drawn by NGOs is the same as industry: the European Commission should start working on EU legislation for printed food contact materials.
Siegwerk supports the VAFP Summit 2019 As a silver sponsor of this year’s Vietnam & Asia Flexible Packaging Summit, Siegwerk raises awareness for packaging safety. Siegwerk was a silver sponsor of the Vietnam & Asia Flexible Packaging Summit 2019. The summit is an international business and technical gathering for flexible packaging, films, printing, converting and extrusion and took place from September 26 - 27, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As one of the region’s largest conferences aimed at the flexible packaging industry, 150 experts and professionals from around the world met to discuss emerging trends and to share ideas for new developments which will shape and expand the future of the flexible packaging market in the region. According to Smithers Pira, a worldwide authority on the packaging, print and paper supply chains, the Asia Pacific region is still the largest emerging market for flexible packaging with China, Vietnam and India showing the highest growth rates. The demand for flexible packaging solutions which offer convenience and superior product protection at a minimum total cost and a low environmental impact will drive the future development of the market. The increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions with optimized recyclability will shape the future of the industry while calling for close exchange and collaboration along the whole flexible packaging value chain. This includes manufacturers, converters, brand owners,
raw material suppliers and ink providers as well as specialized recycling companies. At the same time, product safety will remain the top priority particularly for food and pharmaceutical products. “The summit is a good platform to learn about experiences from various sectors of the printing and packaging industry enabling attendees to exchange ideas, expand their knowledge and gather inspiration to further shape the future of flexible packaging in the region,” describes Jane Manley, General Manager Southeast Asia North at Siegwerk. “For Siegwerk it is a great opportunity to further raise our local profile as the expert for safe and sustainable inks while highlighting the general importance of safety and compliance in food packaging.” In addition to local packaging associations and various global experts across the supply chain Jatin Takkar, Head of Product Safety and Regulatory at Siegwerk, delivered a presentation about safe packaging inks giving insights into challenges, legal requirements and future needs. Concerns over food safety and the critical role of ink as a potential influence on product and consumer safety was the focus of this presentation. Takkar raised awareness of the potential risks originating from packaging inks which contain different chemicals, some of which may be harmful if they migrate and
come into contact with packed food. Toluene, a chemical known for its unfavourable toxicological and organoleptic properties has recently been faced with regulatory bans as well as renewed requirements of global brand owners banning toluene as an ingredient for food packaging applications. Takkar presented a case study on toluene inks and their impact on consumer’s safety, society and the environment to better illustrate the need of safer packaging inks. Siegwerk has implemented a full ban on the usage of toluene and other raw materials containing toluene in its ink formulations intended for nutrition, pharma and hygiene packaging applications following the company’s insistence on offering the safest ink solutions in the world. Siegwerk has always been committed to sustainability and product safety and has made ink safety one of its key guiding principles. Siegwerk’s product safety guidance includes global regulatory compliance, brand owner requirements and risk assessments ensuring that products are safe for the end-use applications. The company continuously supports various customers and brand owners to minimize migration and therefore reduce food contamination risks finally avoiding potential regulatory problems.

Kerala govt. bans flex boards in the state Bans PVC flex media; promotes only recyclable media for advertising The Kerala state government has imposed a ban on the use of flex boards with effect from August 29. Flex material made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been banned in the state in view of the health and environmental issues it causes. According to the order issued by the state government, printing and use of PVC flex boards has been banned, and in its place only banners and publicity material made of recyclable materials like paper, PE, and cloth would be permitted. Further, every such display would need to feature the message that it is ‘recyclable, PVC free’, apart from details like the expiry date of the material, place of printing, and printing number. The contact number of customers also needs to be recorded by the printer. The order not only disallows use of plastic coated cloth for advertising and publicity display, but also has provision for imposition of heavy fines on anyone contravening the order. Earlier this year, the High Court had banned the use of PVC flex boards for the Lok Sabha election campaign.
Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a ban on single-use plastics from October 2, the order has come despite single-use plastics not including flex PVC. For event-based publicity materials, the date of expiry should be the date of the event, while for other publicity materials, it should not exceed 90 days. All such materials should be removed withing seven days of the expiry period by those who erected such materials. The Chief Minister of the state, Pinarayi Vijayan has urged all to avoid use of plastic during Onam festival and tourism week celebrations. He said that the green protocol that was introduced for marriages and conferences has been a hit and that is why the government has now decided to ban flex material completely. Tonnes of plastic came out from the soil and water bodies after the floods that have caused immense damage to the environment. If the government and people join hands, the use of plastic and thereby the degradation of the environment can be contained he said. There are mixed reactions from industry on the ban order. Sign Printing Industries Association (SPIA) of Kerala has decided to go on a month-long protest against the ban. SPIA maintains that the body has already taken measures like recycling of used PVC flex and so there is no rationale in enforcing a ban on the use of PVC flex for advertising and other displays. The industry
body is joining hands with other business associations in the state to organise protest in front of the Kerala Government Secretariat in Thiruvanthapuram. The protest will begin on September 30. Other issues like the printability, quality, strength and durability, cost of substitute media, media availability, technological roadblocks, investment and employment are yet to be dealt with, as is common with such blanket bans. PVC flex media supporters vouch for recyclability of PVC flex and cite examples of other materials as being more or less similarly damaging to environment. It is for the government to discuss the issue collectively with environmentalists, material and service providers and experts to find the best course in the interest of both people and environment.
