Green World Publication: Success through decades gets KODAK CtP boost The Rs.200 crore publishing business sets an ambitious target to double its turnover in a few years.

The recent Kodak CtP installation is a major boost.

Navin Prakashan Mandir was started by Mr. Piyush Agarwal’s father, Late Mr. Satish Chandra Agarwal in 1960. He lost his salaried job and with a meager saving of Rs.10-15 he laid the foundation of his own business. Initially he rented a shop, which was a fire-ravaged place, painted it with his own hands and started framing pictures. It couldn’t keep his interest for long, so he started a book shop where he would trade in new as well as old books. That business flourished with round the clock rush of customers keeping the cash registers flowing. He could manage

plot, to gradually adding the numbers, he acquired business knowledge about selling and marketing;

to save around Rs.20,000 and decided to venture into publication. It was in the year 1967-68 when he bought land for his publication setup. Starting from publishing one book initially from his 400sq.yard

entered into deals with other publishers for sales; and spread the business across the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Around the year 1975 he had stepped into the academic guides’ publishing segment. This business

carved a name in the UP and Uttaranchal region as one of the leading publishers which remained so for almost a decade till 1985.

He re-launched his printing publication business by deciding to print text books and guides for the university.

Piyush Agarwal joined the business at a young age of 14 years in 1984. Mr. Satish Chandra observed his son had little interest in academic studies so he asked him about his interest in joining the family business.

Mr. Piyush readily agreed, and Mr. Satish Chandra initiated a printing setup for him with two Adast Dominant machines from J Mahabeer. The imported machines were – one single colour 714 and another740-model dual-colour, both of 19x26 size. The press got named after Piyush’s mother – Vinita Printing Press and Piyush started looking after the printing business with great interest running the presses 24x7. Vinita Printing Press would print books while binding was handled by the other unit with a capacity of around 2000 books (per binder) manually sewn and bound per day. In contrast, today’s ‘Green World Publication’– the present name of the publication – is capable of churning out onelakh perfect bound 800-1000 page single to 5-colour books from start to finish, perfectly packed and dispatched each day.

Four years down, Piyush faced the greatest turmoil in his personal and business life. The year was 1996 and his father suffered a heart attack, the family got separated and business got revamped.

In two years’, time, they added another Kolkata-made single colour machine of 24x36 size. After continuing for some time, the publisher in Piyush revolted from being limited to just printing and he ventured into publishing – this time into children’s books.

He contacted various writers of children’s books and soon came up with at least 150 titles for children.

A major turning point came when Mr. Satish Chandra gave away the publishing business to one of Piyush’s cousins. Since Piyush’s heart was in publishing, he once again established two new firms to follow his dreams. Along came Ganga Jamuna Offset Printing Press in the year 1986. He also established Navin Group of Publications for the publication business around the same time.

Unfortunately, after so much success Piyush once again faced the teething problems of a new business and suffered many losses doing various jobs – while printing for other publishers, printing text books and test papers for universities etc. In 1992, Purvanchal University came into being and also proved a ray of fresh hope for Piyush.

Piyush once again had to start afresh – this time with one web press, one sheetfed press, one of their first presses as a memento and an office. Doing varied jobs for the market as well as publishers for around four years, they gradually gained pace. Soon they added government tenders in their portfolio and the year 2000 was a new beginning for Piyush.

Green World Publications Green World Publication (GWP) started in the year 2000. The name Green came for Piyush’s inclination towards environmentally friendly practices as well as his love for nature. The firm got registered in Allahabad and progressed from there. After a couple of years, Piyush realized that the firm had

limited scope because of its registered office being in Allahabad which appeared more localized especially on a national sphere.

He decided to move to Delhi – a proper centralized location –so that he can expand the business pan India. In 2007 he shifted to his new office in Dariyaganj and today Green World Publication is an organization run from its registered office based in Delhi.

The company looked no back from there and kept writing new chapters of success to its story. Down the lane, they also took agency of P.C. Jewelers, which is also another success story with an annual turnover of over Rs.50 crores in Piyush’s business journey.

Later he further diversified into an altogether different business and opened a Hotel with the name of Navin Continental. A couple of other projects are in the pipeline or coming up including restaurants, bars, banquets etc. which are scheduled for the coming two years.

As we saw, GWP started with the duo of the existing web machine and a sheet-fed machine, in the year 2003, Piyush felt the need to expand and consequently the need

KODAK VERISET T800 Platesetter: the stability & reliability of Kodak’s thermal CTP technology The plate needs were initially met by getting imaged plates from a partnership arrangement which did them on a Technova Violet Platesetter. Later Piyush got an opportunity to get a Violet CtP in exchange for one of his idle lying online binding machine. The machine got installed to churn quality plates for GWP for almost 5 years.

In between Piyush got the diodes replaced a couple of times and after 5 years, he felt the need to upgrade his plate production capacity. He started gathering information about various products by consulting many of his industry friends. He took feedback upon real world working of various brands by talking with and visiting to actual customer sites. There were a few friends who had been working with multiple brands and they advised Piyush to simply go for Kodak Instantly a meeting was fixed with the Kodak / Insight team and the deal got finalized. Within one month the KODAK VERISET T800 Platesetter that delivers the stability and reliability of Kodak’s thermal CTP technology, was duly installed and was

fully functional at GWP. The device has been installed by Insight Communications, an agent of Kodak India and it will also look after its service and maintenance.

The machine features full online remote support and access by Insight engineers.

The machine is efficiently handling a production of around 200-250 plates per day for GWP. The entire plates, consumables, chemicals etc. are being provided by Kodak / Insight. The device is capable of using media of any brand (after adequate calibration).

Up to 16 different media (calibrated) can be used at a given time without the need for subsequent recalibration. The KODAK CtP is one of the best CtP devices in the world and the world-class printed product quality is being provided by GWP in India. Moreover, the device is fully upgradable. The current model is an F model with speed of up to 22 plates/hr. It can be upgraded to the higher X model which comes with a speed of up to 34 plates/hr.

The option to choose and select a plate that fits individual budget and business requirements is an advantage that can’t be ignored. VERISET Platesetters are open CTP systems, compatible with a wide range of thermal plates. Kodak’s new Lens Contamination Avoidance (LCA) technology enables compatibility with low to medium debris-generating plates, so you can reduce plate costs without needing to add a debris removal system.

The LCA technology keeps debris from the imaging laser through an active air curtain and a removable, easy-to-clean window.

The VERISET Platesetters offers three options for automation making it more flexible and productive, as well as reducing platemaking time as well as errors caused by manual plate handling.

It boasted Manugraph’s Citiline web machines – a total 4 webs of 32-page size; there was another 4 colour web of 16-page size of 578mm cut-off; one machine was a 4-high tower from Aim Graphic Machines; two Webking machines were 2x2 and there were also two black & white bi-colour machines from the brand.

Though most of the machines were of Indian make, many of them had been bought by him from either Kuwait or Australia.

The Rs.200 crore Navin Group of Publications has been doing printing publication jobs for books, guides and other material and the major part of that comes from tenders – including those from NCERT. The recent slump and Covid-19 related slowdown cost them almost 50% fall in turnover last year. But, with the new KODAK CtP in place and going by the growth of the first few quarters, Piyush expects to level up the turnover this year. If things move as per his plans, he has a target of doubling up the production in coming three years. The main force behind his confidence is his belief in his team, his managers and their supervision.

He has a total dedicated team of people who hardly need his intervention in day-to-day affairs of GWP. Of course, he regularly checks with them and keeps in touch with every department through access to a network of cameras and persistently communicates with his managers through various channels.

We found Piyush relaxed and mostly in cheerful spirits, a rare sign in the hectic

schedule of a printer. He told us that his business has clean working, as tenders are online and he keeps margins low. This way he keeps orders flowing and also makes the products easily available for students of even lower economic class. “There’s no corruption, no headaches!” he states.

Piyush finds the publishing business as a promising business. He believes that there is much scope for growth in this field and in other businesses also for that matter in India.

When asked if there is still room for new entrants in the already bloated publication industry, he has a simple reply, “If I can see growth in it, anybody can. What they have to always keep in mind is to maintain quality, do hard work and get the right people to grow.”

“If you produce a good product, it will sell.

New entrants have to be extra careful.

Success takes time. One should be careful with money because money once lost costs time and time is very crucial in business,” concludes Piyush with this veteran advice.

The printing publishing business took off well from Delhi. It not only set-off old losses but also grew to become a healthy profit-making business. Recently, Piyush has imported a few more machines to expand his capacity further. He plans to add more books to his portfolio and penetrate deeper into academic publications and other books. His confidence and dedication make his target of Rs.300 crore turnover in coming 3 years appear nearer.

As for Kodak VERISET CTP, this beauty is a 830 nm platesetter with Kodak’s Light Valve Imaging Technology (TH5 thermal head), external drum and the T800 model (which is installed at GWP) has a maximum plate size of 1038x838mm and gives a throughput of 22 plates per hour at 2400dpi resolution. for a bigger facility. Eventually, he added 6-7 “bigha” land which he bought on the outskirts of Allahabad. This was done with the single aim to bring all the production from printing to binding to dispatch under one roof and manage corporate office work from a separate location. The resulting production facility came out as one of the best setups with state-of-the-art machines and

Likewise, we hope to be an important stakeholder in the GWG community by providing feedback from employers and print industry professionals to help develop specifications that serve the print community at large. The Regional Institute of Printing Technology, Kolkata, was established in July 1956 and started its course curricula with some equipment prevalent at that time.

Since then several attempts have been made to keep pace with today’s technology and now offers full time 3-year duration diploma programs on Printing Technology, Multimedia Technology and Photography.

All the programs are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education and affiliated to West Bengal State Council of Technical and Vocational Education and Skill Development.

Graduate students in Printing Technology often specialize in either print production or in the prepress.

Major recruiters for students of the institute are the packaging printing industry and the publishing industry. In their laboratories, students are introduced to modern colour management workflows in print production. Quality control parameters and tools are also focused on throughout the 3-year programme to help students become well-rounded professionals in the future.

“We welcome the Regional Institute of Printing Technology of Calcutta as a member of Ghent Workgroup. Print is changing and students are our future. They help envision the new technologies, products and processes and then implement them.

Involving them in the research and development work we do at GWG and having them work with us to educate their peers is what we need to ensure a strong and exciting future for print,” notes GWG Chair David Zwang.

The Ghent Workgroup, formed in June 2002, is an international assembly of industry associations, suppliers, educators and industry members from around the globe. The Ghent Workgroup’s objective is to establish and disseminate process specifications for best practices in graphic arts workflows.

Since its inception almost 20 years ago, the organization has consistently produced numerous process specifications for PDF exchange, as well as developing useful tools for automating processes and testing and establishing consistent PDFs for print,

publishing and packaging production – all available free at www.gwg.org.

Members are comprised of graphic arts associations including CIP4 (Switzerland), KVGO (the Netherlands), Febelgra (Belgium), Fespa (UK), Medibel+ (Belgium), PDFXready (Switzerland), Printing United Alliance

(USA), and VIGC (Belgium). Vendor members include Agfa, callas software, Canon, DALIM Software, EFI, Enfocus, Esko, Global Graphics, Heidelberg, HYBRID Software, Kodak, Ricoh, Tech Research (TagG) and Ultimate Technographics.

Tirupur-based, Abarna Colours has installed Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 75 5+L, the first press in Tamil Nadu. A.P.Murugan, Managing Director at Abarna Colours, said, “The Heidelberg CX 75 is the latest addition into our kitty and the multi-talented press will enable us to move to the next level of quality assurance and to expedite deliveries on time as per our commitment to the clients. The sole reason for investing in Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 75 is to fulfill their in-house requirement for printing, and bring in quality printing on paper boards where they had a tough time due to the thickness of board.

Abarna Colours, started its operations in 2017 and the brand Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 75 five-colour equipment installed at their 30,000 sq/ft plant in August 2021. The organization also installed screenprinting equipment for labels & tags and die-cutting equipment for postpress operations. Currently, they produce garment packaging cartons, paper covers, hangtags, packaging boxes, folding tags, hangers, band rolls, etc., for garment manufacturers-all using their specialty paperboards.

Edible packaging is rapidly advancing by utilizing edible compounds, such as proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and/or resins, and other edible components, derived from diverse renewable sources. Such edible packaging materials are intended to be, integral parts of food products and to be eaten with the products, thus they are also inherently biodegradable in composting and other biological recycling. The main motive behind is to see how biodegradable films work on edible packaging from some of the research paper I have studied that Food packaging films can be produced either by lamination, casting, coextrusion, or coating processes from the raw plastic polymer, biopolymer, and biodegradable materials. The food packaging film is extracted from biopolymers, including gelatin, starch, cellulose, and bio-derived monomers such as polylactic acid. Chitosan is a natural polymer, nontoxic, edible, and biodegradable derived by deacetylation of chitin which is the second most abundant biopolymer in nature after cellulose. The low cost, renewability, and availability of biopolymer are some of the desirable considerations applicable for thermoplastic starch-based food packaging materials. The use of biodegradable polymer reduces the environmental impact on non-degradable plastic.

The application of Nano-composites promises to expand the use of edible and biodegradable films that reduce the packaging waste associated with processed foods. It also supports the preservation of fresh foods by extending their shelf life.

While the polysaccharide (starch and derivatives, gums, etc.) and proteins (gelatine, gluten, etc.) offer edible films with satisfactory mechanical and optical properties, they are hypersensitive when it comes to moisture which constitutes a crucial issue in the food industry since the moisture content can cause rapid deterioration of the food.

The bio-degradable polymers The “Global Edible Packaging Market Analysis to 2028” is a specialized and indepth study of the chemicals and materials industry with a special focus on the global market trend analysis. Bio-degradable polymers are used in both flexible and rigid packaging applications. Biodegradable polymers are used for wrapping organic food, as well as for premium and branded products with particular requirements.

In 2019, global production capacities of bioplastics (of which bio-degradable polymers accounted for around 40% of the market) amounted to about 2.11 million tons, with almost 50% of the volume destined for the packaging market – the biggest market segment within the bioplastics industry.

In rigid packaging applications, biodegradable polymers are used in cosmetics packaging of creams and lipsticks, as well as beverage bottles and many more. PLA is widely used in rigid packaging applications.

The growth in the packaging industry in developing regions, such as AsiaPacific, South America, and the Middle East, is expected to increase over latter part of the forecast period, due to the improving food packaging standards of various food and safety organizations in these regions, which is expected to propel the growth of the biodegradable polymers market at a later stage of the forecast period.

In recent years, biodegradable edible films have become very important in research related to food, due to their compatibility with the environment and their use in the food packaging industry. Various sources can be used in the production of biopolymers as biodegradable films that include polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. Among the various polysaccharides, starch due to its low price and its abundance in nature is of significant importance. Several factors affect the properties of starch films; such as the source which starch is obtained from, as well as the ratio of constituents of the starch.

Starch films have advantages such as low thickness, flexibility and transparency though; there are some downsides to mention, such as the poor mechanical properties and water vapor permeability. Thus, using starch alone to produce the film will lead to restrictions on its use. To improve the mechanical properties of starch films and also increases resistance against humidity, several methods can be used; including the starch modifying techniques such as cross linking of starch and combining starch with other natural polymers. Other methods such as the use of lipid in formulations of films to increase the resistance to moisture are possible, but lipids are susceptible to oxidation. Therefore, new approaches are based on the integration of different biopolymers in food package.

Agricultural waste based Paper as an alternative to Conventional Paper Exploring possibilities of alternative to raw materials for paper and pulp manufacturing, highly dependent upon trees.

Logging of trees has been a major problem in many countries due to rising environmental issues. Due to this the world is facing a crucial problem of raw material for paper and pulp manufacturing. This problem has been arising because of unavailability of any alternative raw material for paper and pulp manufacturing. The below article shows the possibility of using various materials like Sugarcane Bagasse, Bamboo stem, Karkadeh, Okra, Sesame, Jute in paper and pulp production.

Non-wood fibres contain high cellulose, large fibre length and almost similar properties to that of hard wood fibres and can replace the later to a great extent. Also, these fibres contain lower lignin content which makes it easier to de-lignify during the pulping process.

Paper is said to be the most important part or aspect in the development of any nation. Paper helps in the economic, social and environmental development of any country/nation. It has been seen that the population is increasing at an alarming rate and this has affected the overall lifecycle of humans. Scarcity of goods and products has become a major problem.

The increase in population has also affected the paper and pulp industry. It is estimated that the world population will be 12 billion by 2075. The restrictions on logging of trees from government and NGO’s and increase in population have made the paper and pulp industry shift from its traditional method to renewable and sustainable method for preparing paper. There has also been hike in prices of paper since last 2-3 years.

Pulp and paper is made by collecting fibrous raw material from tree logs or non-woods. Firstly wood is chipped and wood fibres are separated into cellulose fibres, lignin and other sugars. According to requirement Chemical or Mechanical pulping is performed. They are further mixed with water to prepare slurry. This slurry is then run through a variety of press rolls and heaters to remove the water content. Depending upon the paper colour required;

additives are used in the bleaching process. Finally the pulp is poured in the head-box of Fourdrinier machine and passed through number of section in the machine to finally form a paper. This is how paper is prepared from pulp and finally delivered to the customer in industrial paper making. Similarly handmade papers are prepared by passing the pulp through a screen mesh.

India has a large amount of agricultural waste produced every year. This waste is either thrown away or burnt in open air which results in affecting the environment. Thus this agricultural raw material can be used in production of paper. This will help in reducing the waste and also be responsible to attain a sustainable cycle for paper and pulp industry.

Agricultural raw material is generally called as nonwood fibres. Non-wood fibres are able to replace wood fibres to a great extent. These fibres contain lower lignin content which makes it easier to de-lignify

during the pulping process. Non-wood fibres contain high cellulose, large fibre length and almost similar properties to that of hard wood fibres.

The above table shows the physical and chemical properties of some non-wood fibres and it is seen that bamboo has highest fibre length (mm) while sesame and okra seeds have lowest fibre length (mm). Bagasse has highest Hemicellulose content among all the Non-wood fibres. Large Fibre length results

in providing greater strength to the paper whereas short fibres provide opacity and smooth surface. With these properties almost similar to that of hardwood pulp, the paper prepared still has some disadvantages like low tear resistance, low opacity etc. which can be further eliminated to some extent by using external additive while preparing pulp.

In the year 2003 studies were carried out on various factors affecting dimensional stability of bagasse paper and it was concluded that the dimensional stability of non-wood fibres can be increased or improved by using various additives. Additives like Internal & External sizing can improve the stability of paper. The paper produced from non-wood fibres can be used in making paper bags,

books, envelops, etc. A large amount of paper made from recycled or waste paper is being used today in e-commerce sector; this can be replaced by non-wood paper which gives the same properties.

Most countries which do not have large forest area have already been using Annual plants and Agricultural waste as raw material for paper and pulp manufacturing. Similarly developed countries should also shift their traditional approach and implement this sustainable approach of paper making.

Now Paper Sensors to improve the reach of Vitamin-D deficiency test KL University develops paper sensor to measure Vitamin-D deficiency; the test eliminates laboratory testing and costs just a fraction of the existing tests.

KL University has developed an extremely cost-effective test for Vitamin deficiency.

What makes the test more interesting is its being a paper sensor based text instead of existing laboratory based tests, which also cost more. The cost of this paper sensor will come to approximately Rs 40 to 50, whereas the cost of commercially available tests for Vitamin-D in hospitals and labs is around Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000.

The KL Deemed-to-be University has developed this unique handmade paper sensor that can measure Vitamin-D deficiency with high accuracy. It is developed by the team of Pradeep Kumar Brahman from the Department of Chemistry along with Tummala Anusha, a research scholar on the institute’s Andhra Pradesh campus.

This technology brings in new hope as smaller clinics, dispensaries in remote areas, medical facilities in geographically inaccessible locations, and smaller facilities can now be able measure Vitamin-D deficiencies without any bulky equipment or labs. The work was recently published in the microchemical journal, Elsevier.

The KL University is based in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district.

The sensor is developed by designing a paper electrode and printing it on an A4 paper with a specially designed ink that includes cobalt silver doped copolymer ionic liquid and acts as a sensor to detect vitamin D deficiency. The KLU team says that the accuracy of the sensor is over 94%, which

is at par with the existing, commercially available tests. The sensor produces results and generates reports within 30 minutes, saving crucial time for diagnoses.

Indians usually do not get tested for Vitamin D deficiency as it does not produce visible symptoms. Dr Brahman said, “This is possibly the first-of-its-kind and the most affordable Vitamin D deficiency sensor in national and international markets. It will make Vitamin D deficiency testing affordable for cost-conscious countries such as India.

Impact of Plate Screen Ruling on Flexo Dot fidelity Exploring various screen ruling elements influencing the quality of a final flexo printed product.

Flexographic printing is a modern version of letterpress printing and can be used on almost any type of substrates including plastics, metallic film, label stock, corrugated card board and fabric. This printing process uses flexible photopolymer plates which are wrapped around rotating cylinders on a web press. These inked plates have a slightly raised image and rotate at high speeds to transfer the image to the substrate. These inks can print on many types of absorbent and non-absorbent materials and is capable of achieving high quality printed images.

These factors make it very popular in food packaging, textiles and label printing industries. The deformation of printing plate in this printing process caused by pressure between the printing plate and the substrate is a major limitation of flexography. Screen ruling is the number of screen lines per unit of length. It is measured in lines per inch (lpi). The screen ruling will determine the amount of detail in the final printed result, low lpi means fewer details and high lpi means a lot of details.

The combination of CTP process and finer-thannormal screen rulings effectively improve the printing quality. The screen ruling has a great influence on dot gain.

The use of different screen ruling has influence on relief depth and cross-section of printing elements which again have a significant impact on the quality of the final product. The dot gain increases with the increase in screen ruling. It may be attributed to the more number of dots at higher screen ruling that cause a merging effect. The image resolution for halftones is determined by the screen ruling. The screen ruling of anilox should be higher than that of the plate to avoid interference patterns.

The image quality of scanned output depends on different parameters. The variation in the image quality is observed by the histogram representation of the image. Histogram gives a graphic representation of the tonal distribution in an image. The image quality is improved by selecting proper screen ruling and screen shape. The achievement of a satisfactory result lies either in changing the configuration of elementary dot cells or in varying the shape and orientation of dots so that the human visual system would perceive more closely packed contours. By using different screen ruling, the shades can be distributed in manner to give better detail. The image quality in printer for Diamond shape screen loses its detail at extreme highlight zone.

The dot gain increases with the increase in screen

ruling. It is attributed that more number of dots at a higher screen ruling cause a merging effect. The dot gain is low at a lower screen ruling, but smooth change of tones is possible with high screen rulings.

During pre-printing stages, the compensation should be carried out to get good results at high screen rulings. The measurement of dot is related by the three quantities – dot area (A), density of the tint (Dt), and solid density (Ds). Dot gain is the difference between intended dot area and the actual dot area printed. In printing processes, this usually means the percentage of light that is reflected from the substrate and the ink. The substrate also has a major effect on the amount of dot gain.

Printing quality is mainly evaluated according to reproductions of tone and colour. The choice of screen ruling is limited by imaging resolution and tone value levels. The higher is the screen ruling, smaller is the gray level which is not good for tonal reproduction.

The HD Flexo technologies help to increase the print quality of image. The reproduction in highlights and transitions to zero is improved with HD Flexo technology. Increased screen ruling allows better reproduction in mid tones, neutralizing the negative effect of visible rosettes of the image. The digital printing plates reproduce tonal range better, with finer details with a minimized dot gain.

The use of different screen rulings is of great significance in curve adjustment of the printing plate and has an influence on relief depth and cross-section of the printing elements.

Digital has obvious advantages over ‘traditional’ by eliminating many processes typical of traditional set-ups – helping reducing and cutting waste. “Digital has obvious advantages and as we see Covid-19 has reduced the overall demand in Commercial Print segment, a sizeable part of it has shifted towards Digital,” says Mr. Nizawa. “It has only happened because outputs on Digital are fast with negligible wastages. We are witnessing an increased interest of Commercial Printers in the Digital Printing for optimizing their print requirements,” he adds.

Advantage Digital Understandably, Digital Printing has obvious benefits over ‘traditional’ by way of its unique capabilities, especially in more advanced as well as progressive markets. see inefficiencies in some of the jobs being printed which can be done more efficiently with Digital. The technology has advanced over the period and reached to a good acceptable level in terms of quality and flexibility. In the coming times we foresee more digitization happening. The customers who adapt to the changing environment and demand from the print buyers shall also have higher chances of growth and continuity in their businesses,” he envisages.

AccurioLabel 230 – an amazing label printing workhorse AccurioLabel 230 has been a very successful product for Konica Minolta worldwide and very soon they will be completing 1000 installs. It is one of the fastest growing segments for Konica Minolta. In India, there are already more than 10 machines installed and running. “It is quite a popular machine and there is an increased demand from the customers to shift their short-run jobs on Digital. The other factor which is driving the demand is the demand for automation using variable bar code/ QR code’s etc,” says Mr. Nizawa.

Supply chain is the core strength Print is a way of communication with printing present all around us in various forms. It’s more art than the science, which actually goes behind it, says Mr. Nizawa. Konica Minolta has introduced the technologies to embellish the Print. Digital technology helps to enhance the value of document for as small a job as a ‘Single Print’. The users can embellish with UV & foil. The new age designers are crossing boundaries to make the documents look stunning. “We have this technology for Small Printers to Big Commercial Printer, Label Printers and Packaging Printers,” he says.

In addition, Konica Minolta has a very robust supply chain system. The system supports different requirements of the customers including for consumables. “So far, during our last 11 years of experience, we have not had any challenges in the supply chain,” declares Mr. Nizawa. “During the current Covid-19 period, there have been some disruptions because of the movement of goods across countries, but the system is robust enough to manage. Moreover, with the automation in the import processes, we are also saving time,” he adds.

Circular economy, green initiatives and Konica Minolta Konica Minolta has been dedicatedly saving and conserving the resources available. In all its products it tries to reduce the waste from the devices, for example, it collects the used toner bottles and old machines from the customers and hands them over to the e-waste management companies to properly handle the same. The recent “Prayaas” programme is another step towards environmental friendly initiatives by the company. In this programme, the company would be planting more than 1000 trees in the coming months across India.

Publishing it either Online or Print shall depend upon the consumer of the information. For e.g. Utility Bills – they continue to be generated and the numbers are increasing including the flexibility to the consumer to pay and receive the information Online & in the form of Print.”

“Another key area is Packaging which is as much important for the branding as it is for the safety of the goods to be delivered to the customers. We expect digitization to increase in this segment also with processes like PrintOn-Demand, or manufacturing efficiencies,” says Mr. Nizawa.

IPMA and industry expresses concern over GST increase An increase in the GST rate on paper cartons, boxes and bags will work against the Government’s efforts: IPMA

Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) and other affected by the recent Government decision reviving GST rates have expressed their concern over the hardships that may ensue due to the increased financial burden. The GST Council, in its 45th meeting held on 17th September 2021, has recommended an increase in the GST rate on cartons, boxes, bags, packing containers of paper etc. from 12% to 18%.

It is feared that the new GST rates on these products and media will make it expensive for consumers to shift away from single-use plastic.

Earlier the Indian government, amending the plastic waste management rules, had decided to ban the manufacture, sale and use of single-use plastic. The extra burden on paper based packaging industry will go against the government’s commitment to become a single-use plastic free country.

According to IPMA, this recommendation of the GST Council is surprising and not in sync with the move of the Government towards ban on the use of single-use plastic.

Recognising the global menace of single-use plastic which is not biodegradable, India had earlier given an international commitment to ban all single-use plastic by 2022. The new Plastic Waste Management Rules aim to prohibit the manufacture, sale and use of several single-use plastic commodities from 1st July 2022. The rules also prohibit the use of plastic carry bags with thickness less than 75 microns with effect from 30th September 2021 and 120 microns with effect from 31st December 2022.

IPMA President, Mr. A S Mehta states “Paper is one of the most environmentally sustainable products as it is fully biodegradable, recyclable and is produced from sources which are renewable and sustainable. Paper provides a viable alternative to single-use plastic in several applications. Saralon’s core business is the development of functional inks for screen and flexographic printing systems. With SaralNFC LightPaper, bringing a smartphone close to the paper can switch on light from paper and simultaneously open a weblink on the smartphone. Using SaralNFC TouchPaper, once a smartphone is placed on the paper, the paper becomes interactive, multiple weblinks can be opened by touching paper at predefined positions.

Packaging, mailings, interactive cards and retail applications are the core target markets that Saralon is currently addressing.

Brands are fighting more than ever for the attention of customers; they have been using high-quality papers and cardboard, special varnishes or embossing for this. So, you rely on the power of haptics, which has been proven to bring something. However, there is a risk that the success is too low because the competition is doing the same.

In autumn 2020 Saralon used its new SaralNFC technology for one customer who wanted some digital features to be added to their packaging. “The client was from tobacco industry where they have fewer advertising opportunities than other industries. Agfa, Interprint and Koenig & Bauer partner for digital décor printing Interprint expands by deploying Agfa’s water-based pigmented inkjet ink set on two of its singlepass high-speed Koenig & Bauer RotaJET presses.

Interprint recently invested in a third RotaJET system, their second one of the latest generation. Both of these are now running on the same Agfa ink set. The cooperation between the three parties has made it possible for Interprint, which already became an industry pioneer when it adopted inkjet printing on décor paper as a key strategy for growth, to expand its digital printing range with first-rate laminates. Because of the consistent and interchangeable prints on both lines, Interprint can roll out a wide variety of designs, from the early sampling phase right to the full production.
