FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, This year for the first time the German championships for digital and print media designers will also take place in Wiesloch-Walldorf. The new center in Wiesloch-Walldorf is the only one in Germany for the field of print media technology. The Print Media Center offers the best training opportunities for ambitious young printers up to the cut-off age of 22. The national championships for the profession of print media technologist with eight competitors traditionally take place at Heidelberg, the next one is in October. Over 135 vocational college students together with their teachers gained interesting insights into production at the Print Media Center. Heidelberg has also secured a whooping Euro 14 million order from Elcograf. The print shop has ordered two Suprasetter CtP platesetters, various postpress systems and four Speedmaster XL series printing presses with the innovative Push to Stop concept. All the systems will be installed by September 2018. The four new printing presses replace eight existing machines. Komori has announced a direct entry in India. Earlier the Japanese major was operating in India through its sole distributor – Insight Group. “We will be able to provide the world-class quality and strong support to aid the Indian market using the best of global and local processes to provide the highest value to our customers and maximise customer’s benefit,” says Hirofumi Hoshino, MD, Komori India, who made the announcement during an event held in New Delhi. Another Indian entry is by youth media brand VICE Media, which has recently stepped into the country’s media market in partnership with the Times of India Group. It plans to target India’s millennial generation. VINSAK has been a ‘Make In India’ hit with the government choosing its USAR for security printing requirements. The high quality standards make a mark with the government choosing to place a repeat order with VINSAK. VINSAK’s Label Expo SE Asia debut includes its presenting total Printing & Finishing solutions to the show visitors. Another ‘Make In India’ product, Autoprint’s Checkmate 50 has reached Kumar Printers’ facility. The Autoprint Checkmate 50 Fully Automated Carton Inspection machine will ensure 100% defect free cartons for Gurgaon based Kumar Printers, which has a significant business constituting folding cartons. They are happy Checkmate 50 is helping them cut down on inspection time and maintain highest quality levels required; their clients are getting their deliveries move faster to them due to faster checking. Also, Checkmate 50 has reduced manual dependencies drastically for Kumar Printers. Another key installation has been by Standard Printers Providers which successfully commissioned a Taiyo Kikai STF-340 at the Thane facility of M/S. Label Solutions. The Open House at Dombivali had live demonstration of Taiyo’s this 10-Colour U.V. Flexo Label Press. In the awards area, at the 17th Asian Media Awards, India takes top three spots in Best in Newspaper Marketing even as Malaysia makes a clean sweep of Newspaper Breaking News Article category. At another awards, ADC Award has been won by Koenig & Bauer for its 200-year anniversary publication. An interesting read for our readers should be about an Artist who created Charlie Chaplin portrait by spontaneously using a print head from Paul Leibinger. Are CIJ printers only useful for commercial applications? Certainly not! Artist Francis Nathan Abiamba recently proved it. Enjoy reading all this and much more in the April Issue of PRESSIdeas.

Kumar Printers installs Autoprint Checkmate 50 Autoprint Checkmate 50, with assured Service Support has the biggest advantage of being a 100% ‘Made in India’ Product; which leads to better service, higher up time and therefore higher productivity. Kumar Printers was started by Mr. M.K. Bhargava almost 50 years back. “We started as a commercial printer and slowly converted into a packaging house 25 years back,” says Mr. Sandeep Bhargava, Managing Director. “Quality and service has always been our priority from day one. We do not claim to be the cheapest, but perhaps offer value for money to our customers. We cater mainly to Pharma segment along with Food and FMCG sectors. Our unit has a well equipped infrastructure suitable for paperboard packaging manufacture to meet high quality standards and maintain strict delivery schedules. Apart from the Autoprint Checkmate 50 we have also installed a Blanking machine recently,” he adds.

The Checkmate machine has a very good inspection engine which is quite capable of catching small deviations, especially in text. This machine has enhanced our capability to service our clients faster which is a big advantage today.

Key Notes : > The machine helped us cut down on inspection time while maintaining the required level of quality assurance. > Autoprint Checkmate 50 ensured faster delivery of the right product to our clients. > A compact, userfriendly and cost effective solution for faster checking and deliveries.

12

April 2018

Kumar Printers have a post press equipment for making value added packaging by enhancing pack appeal to the end consumer. Though they already have an imported inspection machine running for the last 5 years, the Autoprint Checkmate 50 will essentially add to that capacity. “So far the machine has met our expectations and is working as desired. Our experience has been good and problems have been promptly attended to. We have found their team to be helpful and receptive to feedback. They are open to suggestions for future improvement and are eager to understand and implement the same,” praises Sandeep.

installation. “The Checkmate 50 is a perfect ‘Made in India” product. We found it more trustworthy, assured of prompt service support than similar available products especially the imported machines, and is a very cost effective solution,” says Mr.Sandeep. “The recent Autoprint Checkmate 50 Fully Automated Carton Inspection machine will ensure 100% defect free cartons, which is a major requirement for the pharma industry. We make folding cartons and the Checkmate 50 helped us cut down on inspection time while maintaining the required level of quality assurance. This means faster delivery of the right product to our clients. Deliveries are moving faster because checking has become faster. Manual dependencies have reduced drastically,” he continues. What attracted Mr.Sandeep the most about the Checkmate 50 was its compact size. “Moreover, it is a user-friendly, easy-to-operate, cost-effective, offline capable and customized to meet all our requirements,” he says. He is particularly appreciative of Autoprint’s reliable after sales service and support. The experience has been very good in all respects.

Autoprint Checkmate 50 – a perfect ‘Made in India’ product

He has great confidence in the Autoprint Checkmate 50 and sees the return on investment as ‘more business, increased turnover and increased profits’. It is difficult to measure the ROI for a QA tool like an inspection machine, he believes.

The Gurgaon based Kumar Printers has recently installed an Autoprint Checkmate 50. Mr.Sandeep Bhargava is pretty enthusiastic about his new

“Investing in the Autoprint Checkmate 50 was a good decision,” he concludes.

Heidelberg presents high-performance digital printing system – Unterleider Medien Gruppe, based in Rödermark, has been testing the new high-performance digital printing system – the new Versafire EP from Heidelberg for several weeks.

The Versafire EV comes into its own in creative applications with many spot colours, while the Versafire EP is the highperformance machine for high volumes, can produce 115 or 135 A4 pages a minute and process papers up to 450 g/m².

Key Notes : > Beta tester Unterleider Medien Gruppe enjoying the stability, productivity, and integration possibilities. > Consistent colour stability from the first sheet to the last thanks to the new inline calibration. > New sizes and media processing offer further application possibilities.

22

April 2018

“The new Versafire EP delivers extremely stable production at a constantly high speed,” sums up Marcus Unterleider, Managing Director of the Unterleider Medien Gruppe. The company, based in Rödermark, has been testing the new high-performance digital printing system from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) for several weeks. The Versafire EP is based on the tried-and-tested platform of the Versafire CP and has been systematically enhanced for the needs of customers in the graphics industry. Like the recently introduced Versafire EV, the Versafire EP has been developed for flexible production and maximum performance. Both machine models from Heidelberg feature the Prinect Digital Frontend (DFE) and an intuitive user interface that simplifies prepress work.

The Prinect DFE uses the tried-and-tested Heidelberg renderer technology for the production of digital and offset printed products. This seamlessly optimizes consistency of colour and form between the two production methods. “With the machines from the new Versafire generation, we offer our customers in commercial printing exactly the right solution for their applications,” explains Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Digital Technology at Heidelberg. “The Versafire EV comes into its own in creative applications with many spot colours, while the Versafire EP is the highperformance machine for high volumes.” The Versafire EP is available as a four-colour press with redundant toner supply and technology geared

towards stable, safe, efficient, and reliable production. It will be available in Europe from June, with other markets to follow soon afterwards.

“Printing alone is no longer enough” Unterleider Medien Gruppe employs over 50 people and has three divisions: print production with digital and offset printing, lettershop for personalized marketing, and global logistics. This enables it to supply its customers from the banking, insurance, retail, publishing and agency sectors with everything from a single source. “Printing alone is no longer enough these days, customers are looking for full range of services,” confirms Marcus Unterleider. “We’ve been on a growth course for years and recently purchased a new building for our logistics services.” Marcus Unterleider was an early adopter of digital printing and integrated production with the Heidelberg Prinect Workflow. That is why the company uses the Prinect Web-to-PrintManager for its B2B shops and the recently installed Prinect Production Manager for its printing activities. The aim is to integrate both the offset and the digital printing systems by means of a common workflow. “We want to achieve maximum automation and be able to decide quickly whether the incoming data will be sent to the Suprasetter platesetter or directly for digital printing,” says Marcus Unterleider in outlining his strategy.

explains Marcus Unterleider. For the first time it is now also possible to print textured linen papers in high quality. The new banner size of 1,030 mm in duplex mode and 1,260 mm in simplex mode enables a wealth of new applications. For example, Unterleider can now print an 8-page flyer on both sides and with personalization in one pass, something that was not possible up to now in this paper length.

Reliability and certainty in production The Versafire EP produces 115 or 135 A4 pages a minute, and can process papers up to 450 g/m². The automatic inline calibration ensures maximum colour consistency and there is now a mechanical lateral register for the inline register, which ensures the best possible register accuracy.

The company uses several Speedmaster presses from Heidelberg for its offset printing.

Growing demand for hybrid production in the printing market Short runs and personalized jobs are handled on the Versafire EP or the Linoprint C901. Unterleider has been using the Linoprint C901, the first generation of digital printing systems from Heidelberg, since 2013. The Versafire EP is mainly used for long runs – for example it is currently producing a personalized catalogue with a run of 20,000 pages. The personalized title page is printed digitally, while the contents are produced using offset printing. “The Versafire EP is characterized by ease of operation and the new Prinect DFE,”

Why GDPR is making 2018 the year of Direct Mail Legislation, trends and initiatives are converging to encourage a shift in the balance of power between online marketing and printed direct mail. 2018 is going to be a defining year for direct mail. According to Eef de Ridder, Director of Commercial Printing, Commercial and Industrial Printing Group, Ricoh Europe: Leading this resurgence of interest is legislation in the form of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). From May, consent will be explicitly required for data collection, contact will need to be pre-agreed for specific purposes and any personal data held must be deleted on request. One of Ricoh’s clients, Paragon, who sends out four million communications every day says that the GDPR updates the key principle of ‘legitimate interest’ and balances the interests of the business against those of the consumer. It has helpfully created this useful eight point approach to best practice.

Work harder to capture interest GDPR puts data control into the hands of individuals meaning marketers will need to work harder and smarter to capture and retain consumer interest. Much has been written about the impact this will have on the way communication will be managed. Not least, the fact personal data must be accurate, kept up to date and, where it is found to be inaccurate, rectified or erased. And, under the GDPR, organisations must also be able to demonstrate compliance with these obligations. Less has been said about the opportunities this presents direct mail, particularly as postal marketing consent, according to the Information Commissioner’s Office, is not needed under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. This means direct mail, as a communication medium, does not have to adhere to such stringent requirements surrounding consent. The result is that the GDPR may well tip the balance further in favour of direct mail. In fact, interviews conducted by Ricoh Europe with European print service providers show they consider the GDPR to be a huge opportunity for consultation with clients regarding new possibilities for direct mail.

This leads us neatly to trends. In the UK, advertising mail is the third largest media channel after online and TV. It is worth an estimated £1.7bn annually. While Royal Mail figures state that 92% of direct mail is opened.

Digital fatigue will help print stand out Research has also shown that millennials are suffering from digital fatigue enabling print to stand out. Nearly half of millennials ignore digital ads and 88% see print on paper as more official than digital. Quite often, millennials start their customer journey on paper (e.g. direct mail) and use the web to find out more details about desired products and services. But to date there has not been a recognised audience measurement system in Britain. This is why the new Joint Industry Committee for Mail (JICMAIL) initiative is generating so much interest. Established in January, it brings together representatives from organisations including the DMA (Direct Marketing Association) and the Royal Mail. Its aim is to provide robust audience data for mail through the measurement of readership, reach and frequency of exposure. It does this with a nationally representative research sample of 1,000 people. They photograph what comes through their letterbox and over four weeks record what action they take. As a result, the data won’t only judge mail’s effectiveness using retrospective measures such as the return on investment of a campaign. It will also provide brands and media agencies with information to help media planning.

51% of all mail is read immediately An audience panel has already been up and running for six months. It has found 51% of all mail is read immediately, a further 19% is followed up on later and 21% prompts an action such as a purchase, website visit or store visit.

and reinforces our view that direct mail is a highly valuable and successful tool for communication. This puts direct mail on the same level with other advertising media that have had measurement systems in place for many years, enabling brand owners to judge the effectiveness of their campaigns. We can help you further explore the power of printed direct mail and ways to encourage greater interaction. Whether it is though cost-effective print from our high speed continuous feed inkjet presses such as the Ricoh Pro™ VC60000, a creative mix of inks, substrates and finishes with our sheetfed systems that include the Ricoh Pro™ C7200x, or with our production enhancing software solutions. We also have the data cleansing / data.mill solution developed in partnership with data.mill. If you would like to discuss these further or investigate other services and solutions in our extensive portfolio, contact your local Ricoh company and consider a visit to our European Customer Experience Centre (CEC) in Telford, central England. For more than 80 years, Ricoh has been driving innovation and providing highly efficient solutions for document management, IT services, commercial and industrial printing, digital cameras, and industrial systems. Headquartered in Tokyo, Ricoh Group operates in approximately 200 countries and regions. In the financial year ended March 2017, Ricoh Group had worldwide sales of 2,028 billion yen (approx. 18.2 billion USD).

a cutting-edge and extensive portfolio especially for our customers active in the growing packaging market. Together with our partners in the industry and our product range, I am certain that I will be able to win over many customers with this technology,” says Carina Shia. Moreover, it is a key advantage that flexo printing inks contain a lot less solvents than gravure especially seeing as environmental protection is slowly gathering speed in many regions. This is an

important factor not just for the environment, but also for the press operators. Koenig & Bauer is the world’s second-largest printing press manufacturer with a broad product range in the industry. For 200 years, the company has been supporting printers with innovative technology, tailor-made processes and a wide array of services. The portfolio ranges from banknotes, via board, film, metal and glass packaging, through to

book, display, coding, magazine, advertising and newspaper printing. Sheetfed and webfed offset and flexo printing, waterless offset, intaglio, simultaneous perfecting and screen printing or digital inkjet – Koenig & Bauer is at home in virtually all printing processes and is the market leader in many of them. In the financial year 2017, the approximately 5,500 highly qualified employees worldwide generated annual sales of more than EUR 1.2 billion.

Label Waste: The Pain Area for Label Manufacturers ALPS announces “Waste to wealth” programme on Earth Day and 48th Anniversary of Earth Month. In the process of manufacturing the selfAdhesive labels, two kinds of waste material get generated. Set up waste & Waste Matrix during the inspection of the rejected labels. The self-Adhesive label stock consists of 3 layers: Face Stock, Adhesive & Release liner of the face stock. The adhesive are of different types or grades like Rubber based acrylic, silicon etc. The Release liner of Face Stock may also be either of paper or films –PP, PE, PET vinyl etc. They are mainly silicon coated paper or films. The pain area for label manufacturers is the disposal of the waste material as these are non- Biodegradable. As the focus is more inclined on the waste disposal by our customers & their third party audits, we have to follow certain guidelines for waste disposals. To extend our support to Mother Earth we do not send the waste material to land fill sites and pay approximately Rs.16/per kg. for incineration, approved by pollution control Board. As this practice is fairly new we don’t get the price increase for the labels despite of paying extra for the waste disposal on the behalf of customer and for customer

retention we have to bear the cost. This reduces profit margins and industry suffers. Association of Label Printers and Suppliers, ‘ALPS’, New Delhi, on the occasion of Earth Day and on 48th Anniversary of Earth Month has announced a programme “Waste to wealth”. ALPS President, Mr. Gururaj Ballarwad said, we have studied how to manage the waste and earn from it. We have consulted our label stock suppliers in India as well as many associations actively working in Europe. We have decided to start common facility centers to manage waste initially in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore & Chennai. Further we will take it forward to other cities where more than 20 members exist. Esko WebCenter 18: Creating better packaging faster Esko WebCenter 18 brings packaging management closer to the one-day target. Esko has announced a major new release of its packaging management solution, WebCenter. WebCenter 18 streamlines and speeds up the packaging development workflow by delivering extra features that give brand owners and converters more control and visibility over their packaging preproduction specification, approval and project life cycle. When CMO Council asked packaging professionals how long it takes to make a packaging change, they reported that changes take an average of about 198 days. Marketing leaders think it takes 90 days or less, but consumers don’t understand why packaging changes and other physical media can’t be made in one day. WebCenter 18 helps its users to get much closer to that one-day ideal.

Helping brand owners create better packaging faster The feedback from our early users has been overwhelmingly positive. With this new version, Esko has the most powerful solution that ties the entire supply chain together.” - Udo Panenka, President of Esko

Esko’s WebCenter helps brand owners manage

packaging pre-production specifications and project life cycles, enabling them to engage with the consumer by giving them more control and visibility over the entire packaging design project. The review and approval process with WebCenter has been improved, enabling more visibility into project status and reviewer input. With WebCenter 18, brand owners now understand the root causes of any bottlenecks, as it now captures the reasons for rejection and the number of approval iterations, allowing for ongoing process improvement. It can also automatically involve the right stakeholder after a rejection, speeding up the revision process. What’s more, reviewers can now review the product exactly as it would be on the shelf. This improves the accuracy of the review feedback and so further reduces approval times and number of iterations. The 3D packaging models can then also be used to clearly communicate internally, but also to populate and market with retailers and consumers online.

pressideas/ plc

WebCenter18.0 content management now includes built-in and custom templates, so users efficiently comply with regulations such as Nutrition Fact Tables and Over the Counter Drug Facts. The Graphic Content Management functionality allows brand owners to centralize artwork data, and to merge it into templates, including the logging of symbols, logos and barcodes, as well as packaging copy and graphics. These elements must be perfect for branding and regulatory compliance, and this process completely removes manual processes that lead to mistakes. Translations within and outside of the system can be managed systematically as well.

Driving process improvement at converters The new WebCenter gives converters an edge by including exactly those new features that give them valuable insights into their processes. Capturing data around the number of approval iterations and the reasons for rejections are only 2 examples

of how WebCenter 18 uncovers bottlenecks and root causes of delays in the process. These insights provide a basis for continuous improvement of the processes to further speed up turnaround times. WebCenter 18 also comes with a social media-like instant messaging function, which can be utilized inside the context of a specific project. All communication is therefore stored inside the project for full traceability and transparency. This further streamlines communication between stakeholders and results in a greater reduction of errors and increased efficiency. Even more exciting, reviewers now review the product exactly as it would be on the shelf. This 3D review process significantly reduces approval time and iterations and lets converters catch more errors. This also provides a unique differentiator to brand owner customers, allowing them to really “see” the proposed packaging.

Deploying in only 5 days delivers immediate business impact after The “QuickStart” versions of WebCenter are available, allowing organizations to implement the tool in less than 5 days with proven and expert workflows ready to use. This way the “QuickStart” versions deliver instant benefits in project management, data management, approval process and data automation. “Packaging is an ever more important part of almost all consumer goods, from food to electronics, and it plays an even greater role as consumer awareness and demand increases. WebCenter is the leading packaging management platform used by Fortune 500 companies that are active in the CPG and pharma industries, as well as converters and packaging printers. The feedback from our early users has been overwhelmingly positive. With this new version, Esko has the most powerful solution that ties the entire supply chain together,” says Udo Panenka, President of Esko.

A Young Managers Club (YMC) workshop has been added to the programme of this year’s FINAT European Label Forum (ELF). The 4th edition of the annual ELF takes place in Dublin, from 6-8 June. The workshop comes 10 years after the YMC was established in 2008, at the occasion of FINAT’s Golden Jubilee congress in Paris, to meet an increasing need for up-and-coming managers in small to medium-sized, and often family-run, enterprises. These young professionals wanted help in becoming tomorrow’s leaders and to expand their knowledge about self-adhesive labels. The club helps develop emerging management talent by providing needed educational and vocational opportunities. Taking place on Wednesday afternoon prior to the start of ELF, the workshop will include a competition that will see young versus old battle it out in a business simulation workshop, which should prove to be both educational and entertaining.

Keynote speaker addresses the generation question During the main ELF programme, the opening keynote speaker on the 2nd day of the event, Sarah Sladek – best-selling author, speaker and CEO of XYZ University will also address the generation question. Her company has helped hundreds of organizations grow membership and reduce turnover among younger generations. She will discuss her experience in helping organizations engage future generations of members and talent and share ideas about best practices.

The future of our workforce and leadership debate 10 years after the foundation of the YMC, the challenge for our industry and our association is not only to activate a new generation of industry leaders, but also to attract and retain talent in technical and commercial functions. At the occasion of this anniversary year, the ELF Industry debate that will follow Sarah’s keynote presentation will take stock of where our industry is and will be going in terms of succession, consolidation, ownership, technology innovation, leadership, skills, know-how, resources etc.

Dynamic change “We are very pleased that YMC will have its own workshop as part of the ELF,” states YMC President Chris Jones. “There is a lot of dynamic change happening in the industry; and we need focused, dedicated and inspiring leaders that will continue to drive all the positive change currently underway far into the future. The ELF will give our members the opportunity to learn more from their peers while our own conference will help them address some of the more specific dayto-day challenges they face.”

OPM adds three more AVT Helios OPM Group has partnered with AVT for 100% production line quality control by installing its second Helios and plans two more for later this year. OPM Group has installed its second AVT Helios print inspection system with a third and fourth planned for later this year. The investment is part of the operation’s vision to become one of Europe’s top-performing label and flexible packaging printers. The AVT Helios print inspection system is designed exclusively for labels and narrow web printing. It offers 100% Quality Assurance across the entire print production workflow – from set-up through printing to finishing – inspecting any application and any substrate or print type. Susan Ellison, owner of OPM Group states: “Print is an increasingly competitive industry. We are constantly looking for new technologies and innovations. Our vision is to maintain our position as one of Europe’s top-performing printers of quality and innovative labels and flexible packaging. Our strategy is not designed around what or clients expect today. We recognise that the markets will expect something different in the future. And that future is starting to arrive now. The consumer driven process of printed labels and packaging is already becoming more impatient, more demanding and more discerning. To compete with this ever changing market OPM continually investigate and assess the use of new technologies, processes, and materials that will be needed to bring new products to our clients. The whole team recognises the necessity for continuous R&D to meet this strategy by achieving the perfect combination of our core areas of expertise: print, lean manufacture and service.” Privately-owned, independent, OPM (Labels & Packaging) Group was established over 40

years ago. It currently serves more than 600 clients in both domestic and export markets spanning numerous sectors, including pharmaceutical, health and beauty, home care automotive, beverage and food.

is key to ensuring all products are fit for purpose and delivered in full and on time, utilising AVT’s best in class print control solutions and our strict QA procedures this is a given”.

Continuous tech investment

OPM selected AVT after a peer inquiry about the company’s reliability, training and customer service. All feedback was positive, comments Ms. Ellison: “So we decided to go to drupa and meet the AVT Team for a demo of the latest software and equipment. Its ease of use was quickly illustrated. We also see the links to Esko workflows and KPI /control data capture as huge benefits.”

Since 2009, it has made continuous capital investment, including printing presses as well as an fully automated MIS system, linked to Esko , GMG and ink mixing technology software. This ensures that it is always at the forefront of the label and packaging technology. It runs six Nilpeter UV flexo presses complemented by finishing equipment from Bar Graphic Machinery.

Long-term strategy AVT’s Helios print inspection system was added to OPM’s Nilpeter Asterix Flexo printing operation and at the finishing line, completed with Martin Automatic Fly and splice automation. Both Helios inspection systems are linked to AVT’s PrintFlow Manager and PrintFlow Central quality and process control workflows. PrintFlow Manager ensures that inspection data collected from all inspection platforms is presented directly to the PCs of print managers and key personnel, promoting improved monitoring, analysis and increased internal production quality and efficiency. PrintFlow Central enables automatic storage of inspection data as well as job setup data from AVT inspection systems into a single computer (server), enabling improved backup of job parameters/inspection data together with continuous availability of inspection data for PrintFlow Manager as well as WorkFlow Link stations.

Expected excellence Susan Ellison further explains: “OPM has built an environment where excellence is expected. Our team understands quality is not achieved by accident. It is borne from direction, effort and attention to detail. The most dangerous kind of waste is the waste you do not recognise. Thanks to AVT, we are continuously getting better at eliminating waste and error. OPM recognises that product quality needs to be controlled constantly and consistently. 100% inspection

This investment is part of OPM’s aim to continually improve its QA systems on all presses and finishing over the next three years with added software automation and Martin Automation systems. “We’re committed to growing through continual investment in people and worldclass technologies,” adds Chris Ellison, Managing Director who is also the current President of FINAT, the European association for the self-adhesive label and narrow-web converting industry. “We always think about the long-term strategy. Average doesn’t work for us, which is why we’re passionate about helping our clients to achieve excellence in all areas of their work. Staying up to speed with the latest technology is mandatory.” “We partner with customers and suppliers looking beyond traditional markets, to actively promote new ideas and add diversification to our ever-evolving product offering. Our key to successful innovation is finding inspired customers, proactive suppliers, passionate and talented staff who are committed to working together and who embrace the philosophy of collaborate-toinnovate. We look at innovation to develop customer value through unique solutions that meet new needs, unperceived lingering needs or altering existing market needs. That is why we all enjoy working with the AVT systems. Their innovative best in class solutions highlight opportunities for unforeseen process efficiency improvements, continuously boosting productivity even April 2018 35 further.”

The LEGO Group nears target for 100% sustainable packaging by 5 years Ambitions include replacing single-use disposable plastics and finding recycled or sustainably sourced biobased materials for all plastic based packaging. In 2015 the LEGO Group announced its ambition to use 100% sustainable materials in both its bricks and packaging by 2030. Recently, the LEGO Group announced that they are aiming for 100% sustainable packaging by 2025. • Currently, the majority of LEGO packaging, by weight, is cardboard or paper-based which is recyclable, sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. • Tim Brooks, Vice President Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group said: • “To support our company mission, we have a Planet Promise and we have pledged to play our part in protecting the planet for future generations. Using sustainable packaging is an important part of fulfilling that promise. By bringing forward our ambition or sustainable packaging, we are also acknowledging the need to find better packaging solutions sooner. We’ve made good progress in the past three years, and there is still work to do.” LEGO bricks are designed to be reused and handed down through generations, but not everyone keeps their LEGO boxes and other packaging. As some of the LEGO packaging contains single-use disposable plastics, which today are not sustainable, and in some cases cannot be recycled by consumers, the LEGO Group is actively taking measures to improve its packaging sustainability. Tim Brooks added: “By 2025, our aim is that no LEGO packaging parts have to end up in a landfill. Packaging will be made from renewable or recycled materials and will be easy for consumers to recycle.” The LEGO Group has taken several steps to improve the sustainability of its packaging: • In 2018, the company began using recycled plastic in packaging ‘blisters’ - the transparent plastic windows which allow consumers to have a sneak peek into some LEGO boxes • This year, LEGO boxes in the US

36

April 2018

and Canada started to feature the How2Recycle label promoting packaging recycling and providing US and Canadian consumers with clear guidance to responsibly recycle their LEGO packaging In 2017, plastic trays used in Advent Calendars were replaced with recyclable paper-pulp trays, saving up to 1 million plastic trays from going to the landfill Approximately 75% of cardboard used to make LEGO boxes comes from recycled material The average size of a LEGO box has been reduced by 14% over the past four years, improving transport efficiency, saving on average every year over 3,000 truckloads and 7,000 tonnes of cardboard All paper and cardboard used in LEGO products and product packaging is recyclable, sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council

The LEGO Group’s sustainable packaging ambition focuses on finding sustainable packaging alternatives that are: •

Renewable: 100% of LEGO boxes, bags, and special packaging are to be made from recycled or sustainably sourced bio-based materials Efficient: ongoingly exploring ways to optimize packaging, balancing

consumer appeal with environmental action Recyclable: designing packaging that facilitates consumers to recycle in our major markets

What is a sustainable material? The LEGO Group believes a new sustainable material must have an ever-lighter footprint than the material it replaces across key environmental and social impact areas such as fossil resource use, human rights and climate change.

Sustainability at the LEGO Group The LEGO Group partners with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), as part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in manufacturing and supply chain operations and promote global action on climate change. Through investments in wind power, the energy used to make LEGO bricks is balanced by the production of renewable energy.

Gallus Innovation Days 2018 to feature new digital label printing system At the third Gallus Innovation Days that take place from 26th to 28th June at the Gallus headquarters in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Gallus broadens product range for growing digital label market. For the third time in a row, Gallus is hosting the Gallus Innovation Days this year from 26th to 28th June. Up to 1000 visitors are expected to come to the Gallus headquarters in St. Gallen. With this amount of guests to attend the event, the Openhouse of the Swiss company has already become an established event in the industry. During the Gallus Innovation Days 2018, that take place from 26th to 28th June 2018, Gallus and Heidelberg experts are showing how digitization will change the label business and how Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG are going to jointly support their customers in mastering this paradigm shift. In order to do so, Gallus presents a variety of new products, following this year’s motto “Solutions for Printing Champions”.

Getting started in digital printing made easy A new digital label printing system called Gallus Smartfire is going to debut this year, and it is especially convincing thanks to its easy handling. This label press is designed for constantly changing short runs and furthermore represents an affordable solution for any label printer who is interested in going into digital label printing.

Innovations in digital and conventional label printing During hourly live demonstrations held in the new Print Media Centre Label, Gallus novelties in digital and conventional label printing are going to be presented. On the one hand, the Gallus Labelfire is going to be highlighted. Upstream, the press is newly equipped with a fully integrated screen printing unit. The herewith applied screen white in its full opacity can be used for transparent substrates and guarantees the quality standard for this digital label printing system. On the other hand, the conventional Gallus label presses are presented with additional features: for the first time, the new Gallus Labelmaster Advanced can be seen with an automatic transverse and longitudinal register control. The Gallus RCS 430 is equipped with flying imprint and

extremely fast UV ink drying thanks to a UV booster, and the Gallus ECS 340 is featured with web shifting for the manufacture of multilayer labels. On top of that, the Gallus screen printing department will be presenting the whole production process of a Screeny A-Line printing plate, from screen exposure with the new Phoenix UV-LED exposing system by Heidelberg, to the development of a new automated washing and drying system by Gallus Screeny to the final assembly of the ready-to-print screen printing plate. Heidelberg will even be presenting several topics at the Gallus Innovation Days: Three-dimensional objects are going to be printed on and personalised on the Omnifire 250. Furthermore, Heidelberg covers inmold printing with the rotative die-cutter Speedmaster XL 160-DD, which is up to three times faster in terms of production and

makeready time as well as more economic in tool costs than a similar flatbed die-cutter. CERM introduces new mobile solutions with its business management software.

Gallus Partner Show More than 30 partnering companies are going to present their products and services for the label business in hall 1, which exceeds all records of former Gallus Innovation Days. Registrations for the Gallus Innovation Days 2018 can be made on the Gallus website. Two years ago, more than 800 visitors from all over the world travelled to Switzerland to attend the Gallus Innovation Days. This year, Gallus will continue this success story on an even bigger exhibition area.

Mimaki and Bompan JV: A solutions approach to digital textile printing The joint venture Mimaki Bompan Textile caps two decades of collaboration in delivering leading digital solutions. Mimaki, manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and cutting systems, is focused on promoting the analogue-to-digital transformation of printing processes in the textile and apparel market. This includes developing a total solutions approach, from pre-processing through printing and post-processing of digitally printed textiles. To that end, Mimaki Europe has established a joint venture with BOMPAN S.r.l., Italian distributor that has longstanding experience in the textile industry and has had a trusted business relationship with Mimaki Europe for more than two decades. Mimaki Europe retains a 51% ownership of the joint venture, known as Mimaki Bompan Textile S.r.l., and the majority of directors, including the CEO, Hirokazu Hayashi. Massimo Bompan is serving as Chairman of the joint venture company. “This joint venture is a critical element of our strategic approach to the textiles and apparel market,” Hayashi said. “Mimaki Bompan will be responsible for marketing the entire Mimaki portfolio for textile printing in Italy. In addition to this joint venture, Mimaki Europe has also pursued partnerships and acquisitions that will help round out our textiles portfolio, including most recently Rimslow, a manufacturer of post-treatment solutions for textiles. This expansion will help us provide our clients with a complete solution for high volume textile production.” The establishment of Mimaki Bompan Textile followed the launch of Tiger-1800B, the brand’s production-class textile printer, which is available in direct-to-textile and sublimation transfer models. With a maximum printing speed of 385m2/h, the Tiger-1800B fits highvolume production environments that have traditionally printed using analogue printing methods, bringing the benefits of digital printing to these higher volume applications and making it more efficient and costeffective to produce short runs, customized fabrics and garments, and samples. “Mimaki Bompan Textile aspires to be an international one-stop center for the textile market,” said Massimo Bompan, Chairman.

“Our priorities are client satisfaction with an all-encompassing vision, and a range of solutions that include entry level systems and industrial machines. The company is operating as a Total Solutions Provider, offering a complete solution that includes inks, software, pre- and post-treatment systems, as well as technical services. This makes it easier for textile producers to add

digital to their production platform, and it provides a single-source entry path for new businesses who wish to take advantage of the significant opportunities the digital textile transformation offers.” Mimaki Bompan Textile will be participating at the FESPA Berlin.

Artist creates Charlie Chaplin portrait with industrial printer Francis Nathan Abiamba uses Paul Leibinger printhead as brush to amaze Wire and Tube trade fair visitors. Are CIJ printers only useful for commercial applications? Certainly not, as artist Francis Nathan Abiamba recently proved. The artist from Cameroon spontaneously used a print head from Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG as a brush – and amazed visitors at the wire and Tube 2018 trade fair in Düsseldorf with a portrait of Charlie Chaplin. Abiamba, known in the art world as Afran, had a booth at the wire and Tube 2018 trade fair and it happened to be right next to the Leibinger booth. “We started talking and we suddenly had the crazy idea of using a print head as a brush,” recalls Christina Leibinger, Managing Proprietor of the Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG from Tuttlingen. Usually, the JET3up printer’s cylindrical print head is mounted on a conveyor belt or behind an extruder and connected to the hydraulics in the printer housing via an umbilical. “Abiamba just picked up the print head, threw the umbilical line over his shoulder, and used the back of a fair poster as his canvas.”

“A day without laughter is a day wasted” Abiamba had only briefly practiced with the print head. It was, after all, the most unusual brush the artist had ever worked with. Then the show began: the artist painted a portrait of the British comedian Charlie Chaplin. In no time at all, using the silver electric paintbrush, he captured the distinguishing features of the film icon on paper – including his bowler hat and famous two-finger mustache. “Everyone at the booth was impressed and the magical performance brought many a smile to the audience,” raved Leibinger. “The portrait in silver is absolutely stunning and will be given a place of honour at our company headquarters in Tuttlingen.” Chaplin himself would have enjoyed the performance. One of his most famous quotes is: A day without laughter is a day wasted.

How can you use a print head as a brush? Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) technology on the inside makes it possible. Up to 120,000 electrically charged ink drops shoot through a tiny nozzle per second in the direction of a collecting tube. When printing, two deflection electrodes come into play. They change the

trajectory of individual drops, so that they land as a pixel on the product surface – the remaining drops fly into a catcher tube and circulate in the system. Abiamba did not even have to touch the paper while painting. Francis Nathan Abiamba was born in 1987 in Bidjap, Cameroon. He first graduated in ceramics at the Fine Art Institute in Mbalmayo in Cameroon, and then studied contemporary art in Bergamo, Italy from 2006 onwards. The artist still lives there today. His studio is located in Pescate – 45 kilometers northeast of Milan. His work includes paintings, drawings and sculptures that can be admired all over the world – and especially in Spain, Italy, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG from Tuttlingen, Germany, founded in 1948, is a specialist in industrial marking and coding solutions. The company develops and manufactures inkjet printers, numbering machines and camera verification systems to monitor a smooth production flow. As a third-generation family-owned company, Leibinger employs close to 250 people at its sites in Tuttlingen and Baden-Württemberg in Germany, and at the East Troy subsidiary in the United States. With its comprehensive, worldwide partner network, Leibinger is one of the world’s leading providers in the coding and marking industry.

of the two ink sets, OEM inks can be replaced with Nazdar inks as they run out, rather than all colours at the initial install. This saves both time and money, as there is no need to perform wasteful ink fill procedures or dispose of unused ink. Also on show will be the Nazdar 730 Series UV inkjet ink. The primary uses of this versatile product are for POP displays, durable graphics and banners where colour fidelity and adhesion are of primary importance. Typical substrates for this graphic ink are: acrylics, styrene, Dibond, foam boards, Sintra, rigid and flexible vinyl, rigid PVC, pressure sensitive banner, and window cling. An expert in screen printing inks, Nazdar will also be debuting the new Nazdar 2800 Series Durable Graphic Screen ink. One of the first dual-cure UV/UV-LED inks specifically formulated for the durable decal market, 2800 Series offers excellent adhesion on vinyl and print-treated polyesters and boosts 4-year outdoor durability without an overprint. The 2800 Series exhibits excellent chemical resistance, accepts premask, and thermal die-cuts without edge chipping. Five-year outdoor durability can be achieved by overprinting with Nazdar 2829 Durable Overprint Clear. Nazdar will also be presenting its 2300 UV LED Screen Inks. This series, developed for the container market, is perfect for printing

on various glass and plastic bottles used in the packaging of cosmetics, household chemicals and other similar applications, while offering energy savings and a smaller environmental footprint. Nazdar 3500 Series and 3529/3539 Screen Inks, also on display, are designed for long-term outdoor durability on premium pressure-sensitive vinyl films. Finally, Nazdar will be promoting its new Special Effects Inks binder, to show customers creative ways to harness its speciality inks’ capabilities, such as metallic finishes, phosphorescence (glow-in-thedark), various textures, and more. Ink experts will be on hand to answer visitors’ perplexing printing problems. Whether printing indoor or outdoor applications on paper, plastics, textiles, metal, glass, or containers and packaging, there’s a Nazdar ink that’s right for every job.
