Global Insights

drupa 2016 set for success: The new drupa! Worldwide industry and its global players support this leading international trade fair to present their latest print and cross-media solutions

drupa 2016 is set for success – with many global players having booked larger exhibition space than for the previous show. 80 percent of the exhibition space is confirmed as booked. The show will cover the entire marketplace relating to print and crossmedia.

Key Notes : > Under the motto of “touch the future” drupa 2016 will focus more heavily on future-oriented technologies. > drupa is pulling out all the stops with its highlighted topic of multichannel printing. > The specialised programmes include drupa innovation park, drupa cube or “touch points” theme parks.

December 2014

drupa 2016, the leading international trade fair for print and crossmedia solutions, is already set for success: Worldwide industry and its global players are giving their clear support for the next drupa, and many have booked larger exhibition space than for the previous show. Even now – 17 months before the start of the show on 31st May 2016 – 80 percent of the exhibition space is confirmed as booked. If this trend continues, drupa 2016 will once again, as throughout its 60 year history, be sold out and will cover the entire marketplace relating to print and crossmedia. International global players and market leaders will be at drupa 2016 alongside upcoming and innovative companies from around the world. Werner M. Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Board at Messe Düsseldorf gives his initial assessment, “In the light of the challenging environment, this is a more than outstanding result. No other industry event worldwide – neither the small, regional niche events nor national trade shows – can offer what we can. This result clearly confirms that our strategic realignment with its focus on future-oriented and highlight topics is correct. “

“touch the future”: Future technologies and markets in sight Under the motto of “touch the future” drupa 2016 will focus more heavily on future-oriented technologies such as printed electronics, 3D printing and inkjet printing with its industrial applications. These innovative technologies are driving the market forward and are opening up significant opportunities and growth potential worldwide, primarily in the field of packaging, functional and industrial printing. According to Smithers Pira (UK), sales in the packaging print sector will rise annually by four percentage points to US$ 970 billion by 2018. There

are also indications of growth in the industrial and functional printing sector. Since 2008 this market, that includes printing processes for the production of decorative and laminated surfaces, ceramics, vehicle parts, promotional items or electronic products, has risen annually by 13.4 percent and in 2013 achieved a volume of US$ 43.7 billion. Experts from InfoTrends (USA/UK) currently value the market at US$ 100 billion. “We recognised the growth potential of these markets very early on and successfully set in motion the special “PEPSO” (Printed Electronics Products and Solutions) exhibition at drupa 2012, for example”, explains Werner M. Dornscheidt. “At drupa 2016 we will cover this topic with additional events in the specialised programme and in the form of special shows, known as “touch points”.” The market for 3D printing is developing even more dynamically. The global market volume is currently estimated at around US$ 2.2 billion. The Association of German Machine and System Engineers (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau) that recently founded the company Additive Manufacturing, is anticipating an annual growth rates of 25 percent. “We have therefore developed the “3D fab+print” brand specifically for this market segment,” says Werner M. Dornscheidt. “At drupa and other relevant Düsseldorf trade fairs, we are joining forces with other exhibitors in 3D printing technology and bringing greater focus to the entire topic of 3D”. The response from the industry to this strategic realignment at drupa is clearly positive, as confirmed by the level of registrations. Claus BolzaSchünemann, Chairman of the drupa exhibitor advisory board and Executive President of Koenig & Bauer AG, welcomes the “new” drupa. “In the

online age there has been much discussion in our sector about the usefulness of trade shows. However, the internet simply cannot replace direct contact with people and ideas in the global print and media marketplace, or indeed direct experience of the latest technologies and solutions for this enormously varied market. At drupa 2016 we are again expecting lively interaction for both tried & trusted and the very latest ideas in all areas of print and crossmedia. The slogan “touch the future” clearly highlights the focus on innovation and new concepts. New topics such as functional printing, printed electronics or 3D printing will be reflecting the capacity for change and the need for innovative printed matter in our industry far beyond the confines of the trade show halls. KBA will certainly be there once again!” The relevance of drupa for the entire sector is also underlined by Kodak: Chief Marketing Officer Steven Overman says, “Kodak looks forward to being at drupa 2016. drupa’s new focus on future technologies suits Kodak perfectly. It’s the ultimate venue to show our integrated print solutions to customers and partners – publishers, printers, advertisers, manufacturers, consumer electronics suppliers and other tech companies”. You’ll see Kodak’s process free plates that reduce environmental impact, systems that make smart packaging more eye-catching, the world’s fastest and highest quality inkjet presses, and micro 3D printing processes to mass produce touch sensors.” The relevance of new markets and target groups was recognised early on by drupa 2016 exhibitor Mimaki and as a result the company is giving the show its full backing: “drupa 2016 will be the number one show to spot trends in print & crossmedia solutions, so that is where Mimaki will be”, emphasises Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing, Mimaki Europe. “Our expanded portfolio

10

December 2014

consists of a myriad of printing solutions for any print service provider. Be it large volumes, personalised printing on particular substrates or peculiar objects, Mimaki can deliver the right solution to get the job done. This diversity in our customer base challenges us to select the right show for the right audience. But drupa delivers a heterogeneous attendee crowd and offers exhibitors and visitors alike the chance to get inspired to touch and print the future - we have to be there.” Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is also giving its full backing to drupa. “drupa 2016 will be an interesting milestone for us to present our integrated offset and digital technologies with the corresponding services and consumables - in a new dimension. In line with present market requirements we will be demonstrating innovative solutions alongside our partners in Düsseldorf”, says Harald Weimer, Executive Board Member at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and member of the drupa committee.

Crossmedia and multichannel: Printing in the time of the internet, big data, web-to-print & variable data printing The internet and digital communication overall has changed print in a fundamental way. This is emphasized by the current “drupa Global Insights” report entitled, “The effects of the internet on printing – the digital flood”. Interaction is the name of the game. Big data, web-to-print, variable data printing and internet-supported tools such as augmented reality and QR codes characterise and impact the entire cosmos of printed products and the complete workflow. Here drupa is pulling out all the stops with its highlighted topic of multichannel printing. Hewlett-Packard, an active member of the drupa committee since 2013 and a top ten exhibitor at drupa, confirms the new

direction: “Communication between people is evolving just as quickly as technology,” reflects Francois Martin, Worldwide Marketing Director at HP Graphics Solutions Business. “The new crossmedia strategy at drupa with the integration of digital and analogue printing as well as print and online will show that the printed product continues to play a key role in communications. Change in an industry requires courage and firm decisions. The realignment does exactly that and I hope that everyone realises that a new journey is beginning. The new drupa stands for effective and sustainable communication in a social, mobile and cloud-based world.” EFI, a company that has also very recently become an active member of the drupa committee and top ten exhibitor at drupa 2016, also believes that drupa is taking the right path: “In a world where the “future” quickly becomes “now,” drupa 2016’s realigned aim to “touch the future” perfectly describes what visitors would like to see,” says Guy Gecht, CEO EFI. “In a fast-changing world working in an often challenging industry, customers deserve to have the opportunity to explore and compare future investment options. No other event allows for that better than drupa. The show truly reflects the direction of our industry for the four years following each show. The best way for EFI to honor drupa’s 60+ year legacy is to make the 2016 event a worldclass showcase of future technology and innovation that allows printing companies to take the lead in an ever-evolving, opportunityfilled industry.” Another company offering definite support for this strategic realignment is another top ten exhibitor at drupa 2016 – Konica Minolta. General Manager, Toshitaka Uemura, CP Business Division/Sales Headquarters, Konica Minolta, Inc explains: “With drupa’s strategic realignment and

particular focus on print & crossmedia solutions, package printing and highlighting the industry’s innovative strength, Konica Minolta is the perfect match for drupa 2016: We are constantly delivering new business opportunities by virtue of our deep understanding of the production printing market and our customers’ needs combined with our high-end technology. It is the right time for innovative approaches and optimized workflows for a successful future for the commercial printing and graphic arts industry and we are well positioned to

Also giving their backing to the digitisation of the sector and the repositioning of drupa is Landa Nanographic Printing: “drupa plays an important role in the printing industry’s evolution into a 21st century communications medium. Our choice of drupa 2012 as the launch platform for Landa Nanographic Printing was the start of an incredible journey, both for us and for the industry. We expect that drupa 2016, at which we will almost double our stand space to some 2,600 square meters, will be another historic milestone on the road to the digitization of the printing industry”, states Ila Bialystok, VP of Marketing, Landa Digital Printing. After analysing all the registrations, the 19 trade fair halls will be structured according to the individual industry areas and topics starting at the end of 2014. The specialised programme – such as the drupa innovation park, the drupa cube or the “touch points” theme parks – will be designed accordingly. The exhibitor admission process will begin in September 2015. An initial exhibitor list will also published online in September 2015.

KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates The benefits of process free plates and how they differ from chemistry free plates.

There may be some confusion in the print industry about the difference between “chemistry free” and “process free” plates. Both claim to reduce environmental impact and simplify plate making, and both are used widely in the industry. The new process free plate, KODAK SONORA Process Free Plate, is now available in India. Let’s see what benefits this plate offers to printers and how it differs from chemistry free plates.

“SONORA Plates are in a new class of plates, combining the benefits of process free with the productivity, print capabilities and excellent visibility of latent image making operators’ lives easy, just like mainstream plates.” - Abhiram Sathe, Kodak

Key Notes : > Thermal is the dominant technology with about 85% share in India. > SONORA Plates – completely process-free with no processing step, no chemistry and no processing equipment. > Eliminating the variability – eliminating poor quality, plate remakes, additional waste on press, and more.

14

December 2014

First, it is important to note that SONORA Plates are thermal plates. Traditionally, commercial and packaging printers have preferred thermal technology because of high levels of stability and accuracy in imaging, enabling high-resolution jobs, consistent color, and less waste on press. Newspaper printers have traditionally chosen violet plates because of their fast imaging, but the trend is changing as newspapers are realizing that variability can negate those benefits through remakes and poor quality. Data show that thermal is the dominant technology worldwide, but it is especially true in India, where about 85% of plate sales across all segments (in square meters) are thermal (source: Vantage Strategic Marketing (VSM)).

A New Class of Plates SONORA Plates are completely process-free, meaning that there is no processing step, no chemistry and no processing equipment. The plates are simply imaged on the CTP device and then are “press ready” and can go straight to press. On the other hand, “chemistry free” plates require an additional clean out step between imaging and the press, therefore still requiring chemistry. Abhiram Sathe, Senior Manager – Technical Support from Kodak explains what makes SONORA Plates different, “While there are other true process free plates, they have certain limitations, such as short run

length capabilities, slow imaging speeds and weak visibility of latent image after exposure. SONORA Plates are in a new class of plates, combining the benefits of process free with the productivity, print capabilities and excellent visibility of latent image making operators’ lives easy, just like mainstream plates.”

Environmental benefits The environmental benefits of removing the processing step are clear. Printers eliminate all processing chemistry and waste, they reduce water and electricity usage, they eliminate the package waste associated with processing chemistry, and there is no processing equipment to continually clean, maintain, and ultimately dispose of. As a comparison, a printer using chemistry free plates must still use a clean out solution and processing equipment. Replacing conventional developer with a clean out solution is a step in the right direction for printers wanting to be green, but process free plates such as SONORA Plates let them go even further.

Economic benefits Savings with SONORA Plates include not just the tangible costs related to cutting out chemistry and using less water and energy, but also all the costs related to maintaining the processing equipment and disposing of chemistry. However, one of the biggest potential savings comes from eliminating the variability caused by processing, which can lead to poor quality, plate remakes, additional waste on press, and more. Vijayant Kumar Bindal from Crazy Offset, Kurukshetra, is a Sonora plate user who has seen these benefits first-hand. He says, “With Sonora, we were able to eliminate the need of a processor to move plate-making in-house. We can now address urgent customer needs and last-minute changes, along with a significant improvement in quality owing to internal quality controls. The performance of this processor-free technology and image quality delivered is a sure benefit that Sonora brings to us.” SONORA eliminates need for additional work force to run and maintain the processor. Plate making can virtually be handled by only one person thus eliminating cost of additional man power. For newspaper printers, who need to make deadlines, cutting out the processing step lets them get to press

pressideas/ commercial printing

fast, and excellent stability reduces the risk of delays on press. Akruti Offset in Pune also adopted processorless technology and shifted a chunk of their pre-press operations to using Sonora plates. Girish Rao, Director, Akruti quotes, “The quality of image reproduction that Sonora has delivered is fantastic. It is truly process free, making plate-making and pre-press operations an effortless task.”

The shift to process free Arnab Maiti, National Business Manager for Prepress Solutions and Unified Workflow Solutions at Kodak, has a lot of confidence in the ability of SONORA Plates to make a difference. He says, “With the ability to satisfy up to two-thirds of the world’s offset printing requirements, including the needs of sheetfed, heatset web, commercial coldset web, offset packaging, newspaper and short-run UV printers, the SONORA Plate is the first plate that has the potential to shift the industry to process free plate making.”

Making the shift to process free is easy. SONORA Plates are qualified on all of Kodak’s thermal CTP devices and many other popular thermal platesetters. In most cases, a simple optimization of the platesetter for SONORA Plates is all that’s required to start using the plate.

K.Latheef, GM, Vibgyor Imprints. There is an intense competition in the regions market. Price undercutting has reduced margins significantly. The presence of district wise association to address pricing and other issues has been to little avail. Notwithstanding, Vibgyor has retained customers and has registered good growth with its strict focus on quality service and timely delivery. Vibgyor is mainly into Commercial printing with products range spanning from corporate brochures to leaflets, visiting cards, posters, notices and invitations etc. They have recently entered the book printing segment. A single-colour digital printer serves monocolour digital jobs and all four-

colour digital printing jobs are outsourced by Vibgyor. The Press and Prepress are integrated with “Prinect S” software workflow which has various modules such as Prinect Signa station, Prepress Manager and Colour Proof Pro, which helps in seamless productivity. With around 39 employees Atlas and Vibgyor caters to customers across Calicut region and north Kerala. The SM 66 works in three shifts and the people connected with other processes work for one shift. “We have over 350 customers of which about 100 are direct customers and the rest are printers, designers and walk ins. Our main customers are from manufacturing sector & advertising agencies and hotels etc. In future we plan to

strengthen our post press department with UV, perfect binding and cutting machines etc. to cater to the needs of overseas customers,” reveals Mahmood. After the installation of Suprasetter, platemaking process at Vibgyor has become hassle free. With quality and timely delivery at competitive price as their USP – which is enabled by their highly capable Heidelberg solution – they are now capable of answering the recent increase in demand for four colour jobs and short delivery periods. “Heidelberg, with its excellent service support has helped us to meet our customer expectations and has given a new dimension to our business,” concludes Latheef.

Heidelberg acquires BluePrint “With the acquisition of BluePrint, we are further expanding our portfolio in the growth area of consumables,” says Harald Weimer, member of the Management Board responsible for Sales and Heidelberg Services. By acquiring this Belgian supplier of printing chemicals, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is gaining vital know-how for developing and producing consumables in a key market segment. BluePrint offers a comprehensive range of dampening and washup solutions for sheetfed offset presses and has a particularly innovative approach to environmentally friendly products. “BluePrint and Heidelberg have already worked together closely in the past,” says Peter Tix, head of Consumables at Heidelberg. “Under the umbrella of the

Saphira portfolio, we’ll be continuing to develop the BluePrint range of consumables for print production while maintaining the highest standards in terms of the environment and reliability. The products will gradually be made available on the key markets for Heidelberg.” Sales of BluePrint products outside of Heidelberg’s customer base will be continued and are also to be expanded. “Purchasing BluePrint is a further logical step in expanding the Heidelberg consumables portfolio following the acquisition of UK coating manufacturer Hi-Tech Coatings in 2008. Heidelberg intends to systematically increase sales of consumables in the future. We’re looking to become the world’s leading supplier of consumables in our industry in the medium term,” says Weimer.

With BluePrint, Heidelberg can offer its customers the expertise of an established supplier of printing chemicals. This gives Heidelberg the means to tailor products to customer needs and develop them further in-house without the delays that result from consulting external suppliers. BluePrint Products serves customers in 60 countries. The company, based in Sint-Niklaas near Antwerp, Belgium, has well-developed expertise in research and development, particularly with regard to environmental aspects. BluePrint will continue to operate on the market under its own name.

NPES and VDMA sign joint declaration in support of TTIP Declaration seeks elimination of tariffs, harmonized regulations, and mutual recognition of standards and certifications. NPES, the association for suppliers of printing, publishing and converting technologies and VDMA Printing and Paper Technology, part of the German Engineering Federation, the largest association representing the capital goods industry in Europe, have signed a joint declaration endorsing the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Cosigned by NPES President Ralph J. Nappi and Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of VDMA Printing and Paper Technology, the declaration was delivered on December 17, 2014, to EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman through their respective representatives. NPES and VDMA representatives met with key U.S. government and private sector leaders in Washington, DC to underscore the value of TTIP to their respective national industries and urge its ratification by the U.S. Congress. They also met with the President of the National Association of Manufacturers, the largest U.S. private sector association of manufacturing companies and trade associations.

The two associations that, in sum, represent 730 small, medium and large-sized businesses and a total revenue reaching tens of billions, agreed in talks over recent months to produce the joint declaration that calls for the elimination of trade barriers to boost the exchange of goods. The document specifically calls for: the complete stated Ralph J. Nappi, president of NPES. “The printing equipment industries on both sides of the Atlantic are leading the way to position TTIP as a top priority for 2015 in both Washington, D.C. and Brussels.”

elimination of tariffs; business-friendly rules of origin; encouragement of cooperation and transparency in standards development; mutual recognition of conformity assessment procedures; accreditation according to internationally recognized rules; and, transparency and harmonization of intellectual property rights. “The passage of TTIP has been stalled by broader trade issues outside the machinery sector but NPES believes it is important to focus on the many areas of agreement,”

According to NPES Government Affairs Director Mark Nuzzaco who was also present, “the transatlantic effort by NPES and VDMA was very well received as a concrete example of how trade deals like TTIP can bring national industry sectors together even before the agreements are completed, and an excellent model for other industries to emulate in building momentum for the successful completion and ratification of TTIP.” NPES is a co-sponsor of the global PRINT exhibition, and GRAPH EXPO-the largest and most comprehensive exhibition in the Americas of inkjet, digital, offset, flexo, gravure and hybrid technologies, products, and services for the commercial, transactional, converting and package printing, publishing, mailing, in-plant, photo imaging, marketing and industrial printing industries. VDMA represents over 3,000 member companies in the engineering industry, making it one of the largest and most important industrial associations in Europe.

At the recent Print Miracle Expo 2014 held in Kochi from 12th to 14th December, 2014, Xerox India launched Xerox Color C60/C70. Xerox also showcased its newly launched Xerox Versant 2100 at the event. This was the first time that these digital production presses were displayed at a public expo in Kerala. Both received a very good response from the printers’ fraternity and everyone present at the event.

automation features to create colourful personalized communications, collateral, brochures, photo publishing and specialty print products.

The new Xerox Color C60/C70 Printer gives users a cost-effective option for a wide range of printing needs. Commenting at the event, Mr. Balaji Rajagopalan said, “We are excited to showcase these new digital equipments’ at the Print Miracle Expo 2014. The Versant 2100 and C60/C70 are key to us and we have already seen good response from the market for Versant 2100 with number of installations already made across the country. We are sure that C60/ C70 will receive similar response. With these new launches made, we are sure to further consolidate our market share in the digital printing market.”

Good response from market for Versant 2100 and Xerox Color C60/C70 PRESSIdeas talked to Mr. Pankaj Kalra, V P Business Development & Mr. Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive Director of Xerox at Print Miracle.

Expo 2014. We are always glad to come back to this part of the country. We have seen great adoption of technology especially in the southern market and the region continues to be a key focus area for us. Print Miracle Expo is a great platform for us to showcase devices and also network with likeminded professionals, discuss market trends, future of digital technology and how Xerox can play a key role in propelling the growth of this industry.” Print Miracle Expo 2014 is an exhibition on pre-press, printing, print finishing, packaging and converting, organised by Kerala Master Printers’ Association (KMPA) and coorganised by Showcase. This time around, the significance of the Expo was immense as it was scheduled in Kerala after a long gap of 20 years.

Dominant digital position with products in all segments “Xerox, being the first mover in the digital print market, has held a dominant position in this segment, especially in Kerala. We are still the leaders in the digital print market,” comments Pankaj. “Today, within the production press space, Xerox is the only organization which is having products in all the segments and practically adding new products every year from the lower entry production machines to the high

end inkjet presses,” says Balaji. “If you look at the competition, they don’t have the wide range of products we have. They play in different segments – in one of the low, mid or high segments – but not like us i.e., in all the segments,” he adds. Balaji says that Xerox, with the highest number of installations, is the top player in the Kerala market. Xerox installed an iGen 150 just five months ago at a customer in Trivandrum. Another iGen 150 is under installation in Gujarat. “One of our customers in Kochi has more than 3000 machines and another one has more than 2000 machines. No other player in the competition has this large number of installations in Kerala,” he claims. Kerala market is a unique market as it has all classes of customers. Xerox as the leading player in this market, is not only looking at this market from a positioning perspective but also with an objective of making many people successful entrepreneurs with the kind of products it has. It has been enabling customers to grow the business and keep the value chain for their mutual grow. Both Pankaj and Balaji recognise the increasing competition in the digital printing market along with Xerox’s dominant position in its segment. “The market is growing and expanding. There is space for many in this expanding market and in different niches of the market. The print volume is growing

at 30 to 40% year on year. But, we are the number one player in the digital print market, be it Kerala, South India or the entire country. Considering the print volume being done across the country, the volume done on the Xerox engine is the largest, as compared to the competition. Xerox, in terms of number of installations and the print volume, has the largest market share in the country,” explains Pankaj. He doesn’t feel any notable threat from completion right now. He says that competition is just thriving on the market already created by Xerox. “Many times we see competition employing price cutting tactics to cut into our customer base. This is not the case with Xerox. We not only create new markets and new customers we also enhance the portfolios of our existing customers, thereby making them grow and be more successful,” explains Pankaj. Though price i.e. click charges offered by a few other digital press providers are less, Xerox clearly wins on other aspects. Balaji says that about 64% of Xerox’s current business comes from existing repeat customers. In terms of installations as well, Xerox has more installations than any other competitor. Within a month of the recent Versant 2100 Press launch, Xerox has accomplished its 10 installations. “It is an attractive investment for its price and return on investment,” emphasises Pankaj. “Why have these customers installed a Xerox replacing an existing competitive machine,” he asks. “The reason is that these customers see value in investing in a Xerox and they know Xerox believes in giving total value. We give more value for money through our versatile solutions. We have many examples of customers who went on to invest in competitive products and then returned to us only because of this value,” he adds.

The Eureka of Xerox Service! Balaji believes Xerox service is the best available anywhere. He explains, “Our service is based on Internet based knowledge

solution called “Eureka” which uses the expertise of over 1,74,000 engineers worldwide. Every engineer across the globe has the backing of this Eureka solution. No other player in the digital print industry has this type of service support. To elaborate on the Eureka Knowledge Base, not every service problem has a bookish solution. Every service problem has to be solved considering various parameters like environment, power, media etc. Each of these problems and solutions are certified and documented at different levels and fed into our data bank. All our engineers across the globe can use this data at a future date to solve similar problems. every engineer is a leader and he handles a specific list of customers with whom he develops a unique relationship. Our objective is to give our customers peace of mind as far as our equipments are concerned so that they can concentrate on developing their business,” he continues.

Another knowledge based solution Xerox offers is “LogMeIn”. Using this solution any service problem, which is even beyond Eureka solution, can be solved by logging in the service engineer. The toll free service number is serving customers across the country. Customers get their service calls answered within 15 minutes by the concerned service engineers. “Our service infrastructure and number of warehouses for spare-parts are matchless in the country,” informs Balaji.

These are some important aspects of Xerox service across the globe: Xerox constantly interacts with their customers and understands what the market demands. “All Xerox products are developed to meet these market requirements. That’s why we have offered the widest range of products across all segments, so that our customers can chose right product for their application and requirements. Discerning customers see value in investing in a Xerox equipment,”

For Mr. P.Senpathy, Sales Manager, Riso India, participating in the Print Miracle Expo, the show was excellent. “We are getting lots of good leads. This show has been a good platform for promoting our range of products,” he comments. Secunderabad based Riso demonstrated the entry level four colour Inkjet Digital Press, which they launched recently. “This is mainly for duplicator segment and addresses the commercial printing and office requirement applications,” informs Senpathy. Riso has installed many of their solutions in Kerala. In the four colour Inkjet segment, it is

says Pankaj. Apart from the Versant 2100 and Xerox Color C60/C70, Xerox also displayed the entry level Xerox 7800 and the 7830 which is a Work Centre. Versant 2100 has a 2400 x 2400 dpi print resolution, inline registration and colour management system and many other unique features. With its matt like high quality output and all the advantages of digital technology, it can even easily address the short run offset market. It will address the commercial printing market and can also be effectively used in the photo segment as well. It can also add to customers’ portfolio to build print volumes. Pankaj says that the last three months have been very positive for Xerox. “We are very optimistic of the next year, under the leadership of Mr.Balaji,” he concludes.

Most of these installations supplied along with Heidelberg presses are with pre-press interface, CtP etc. “As there are many Heidelberg Presses installed in the region, the customers are looking at improving productivity, reducing wastage and more user friendliness in machine operation,” says Mr. Ashokan, Heidelberg India while commenting on their focus on Prinect in the region. “Prinect is an ideal next step for these customers who are also benefitted by having

a customized solution from under the same roof,” he adds. “We have a predominant market share in Kerala for our presses and the market here is fully aware of the benefits of investing in Heidelberg presses. The current customer need is to enhance their productivity and reduce wastage. We are addressing this need here with our Prinect Workflow,” summarizes Venkatraman. Heidelberg also conducted an Onsite demonstration of Heidelberg Press, Prepress and Prinect Workflow for interested customers at one of their installations. Though Heidelberg has the best compatibility with Heidelberg Presses, compatibility with other presses is also possible with an addition of a Data Terminal to gain access to such other presses. “The Prinect Workflow is fully upgradeable whenever the customer acquires other higher equipment. This way his investment in the Prinect Workflow serves him throughout,” concludes Venkatraman.

Insight Print Communications highlights Go Green at Print Miracle Expo It was first major participation in Kerala for Insight Print Communications. The show was good for the company which got some good leads. Mr. George K Mathew, Director, Insight Print Communications is pretty pleased with the outcome of the show. He however feels the show can be better. He suggests shows of such scale should have facilities like WiFi. “The whole venue,” he says, “should be WiFi enabled.” He is also of the view that the seminars should not be held on the same day of the show. “Since the visitors spend their time at the seminars and not the expo, the show becomes diluted. The seminar can be held for a few hours instead of the whole day and that way the visitors can attend the seminars as well the show,” he adds.

is again environment friendly. The HP wide format presses that we promote use the latex ink technology. The back drop of our stall is not printed on solvent based flex. Instead it is printed on cloth. The Soma packaging machines that we sell are flexo machines which are the best packaging technology for food packaging. Kerala being focused on health and environment, we wanted to show to our visitors here how we care for these aspects. This way our stall has been designed in green to show our commitment to environment protection,” explains George. Insight started operations in Kerala with Kodak products around seven years back. In Kodak thermal CtPs they enjoy over 80% market share and in plates they have around 60% market share in Kerala. They started

selling Komori presses a year back and have installed the first machine in Ernakulam. Four more installations will follow before March next year. “We are only into the industrial segment for HP machines and we have a couple of installations here. We are expecting some business in the packaging segment for Komori products, very shortly,” informs George. He says that their all India performance was very good and they doubled their revenues. They had good business for Komori and plan to focus more on the packaging segment. George expects the next year to be good. Apart from the packaging segment, he sees growth opportunities in the publishing segment using the inkjet, role to role machines. Insight represents Dainippon Screen for these machines.

Insight stall was designed to highlight the “Go Green” concept. The machines that they displayed and promoted at the show were environmental friendly and help their users to go green. “The CtP that we are selling does not need any chemicals. It has a process less plate technology. When you take these plates to the press for printing, you don’t need to use alcohol. For high-end UV printing our machines adopt the HUV concept, which

Monotech Systems gets good response for Scodix and Konica Minolta Monotech Systems has installed the first Scodix machine in Kerala at Photo Park recently. Commenting on the installation, Mr. Amritpal Singh Bawa, Deputy GM, Monotech Systems says, “This is a trend breaking installation for them. They were expecting to print around 20 sheets per week, initially. But they are printing around 100 sheets per day. This is the best ever performance on a Scodix press anywhere in the twelve installations we have in India.” Photo Park is into the photographic segment, however they are getting very good enquiries from the commercial print segment also. “We will be installing another three Scodix machines before end of January and double it by the end of this financial year,” informs Amritpal. It is a good performance figure for scodix, which entered the Indian market just about 18 months ago. Amritpal terms the visitor response at Print

Nearly 80% of the visitors to the show spent quality time at our stall and finalized orders,” he says. Monotech has launched the higher version of the Scodix machine – Scodix Ultra. We also came to know about their finalising first order for the new machine in India soon. The response for other range of products offered at Print Miracle by Monotech was also very good, especially for the Konica Minolta range of digital printers. “We introduced a new range of printer from Korea and the response for it has been fantastic. Customers are very open to accept new technologies now for entering into new applications and segments,” says Amritpal.

All About 30 Tons Of Technology! Benny Landa, Chairman & CEO of Landa has explained the delays in his promised Nanographic Printing press release in his blog. Here are the excerpts from the blog dated December 09, 2014: Well, it’s December again. Hard to believe that another year has passed. So, here we are, 30 months after we promised that our Nanographic Printing® presses would perform to perfection, but the first one has yet to be delivered to a customer. Yes, we did warn that “perfection takes time”, but it is taking more time than we had predicted. The reasons? Well, there are two. The first is that as exciting as the Drupa 2012 models were, they were not exactly what the customers wanted. Folding carton converters wanted inline coating. The big touchscreen user interface – although universally loved – needed to be at the delivery station. And operators needed more convenient access to the machine’s inner workings. In short, we learned that the product needed to be completely re-engineered. And just over a year ago, we took the difficult decision to do just that – to re-engineer the product from head to toe. The second reason is that we had to improve print quality. Although most customers at Drupa were able to appreciate the fundamentals of Nanography™ – the sharp dots, the ability to print-on-any-paper,

etc. – print quality defects masked many of Nanography’s remarkable attributes. Eliminating these defects too turned out to be a time-consuming challenge, especially as this work had to be done in parallel to the massive machine architectural changes. Consequently, it all took a lot more time – and money – than we had expected. Naturally, during these past many months, our focus has been internal – doing, not showing. Now, on the eve of 2015, that is all about to change. Today we have machines that are very different from what we showed at Drupa. If our top-of-the-line Landa S10 press then weighed 10 tons, our fully-loaded Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press with inline coating now weighs over 30 tons! That’s not just 30 tons of iron, that’s 30 tons of technology. It is a masterful piece of engineering that integrates Landa’s Nanographic Printing® engine with a paper handling platform from Komori; an image inspection system with image processing

from AVT; and the industry’s most powerful digital front end incorporating EFI Fiery® technology. As for print quality, our Landa NanoInk® colorants are now visibly delivering on their promise: brilliant, deep pure colours, razorsharp text and edges, nano-thin images that replicate the gloss of any off-the-shelf paper and more. Though not yet perfect, we are getting close, very close. Close enough, in fact, to start showing full-size B1 (41 in.) print samples to our Landa S10 customers. Close enough to start building a world class sales and service operation, starting with top-tier executive Marc Schillemans to head EMEA sales. Close enough to double our Drupa 2016 floor space. And close enough to host our beta candidates at our facilities in Israel in March. That isn’t to say that we are home free. 2015 will be challenging. There is still so much to do. We plan to be in full beta in the second half of the year. We are blessed with the most amazing team of talented, dedicated people committed to making it happen… so it will happen. Apart from over 1,000 man-years of blood, sweat and tears invested by our people, by Drupa 2016 we and our ALTANA partners will have spent over a quarter of a billion dollars bringing Nanography™ to market. And for what? For making digital printing mainstream. That’s what it’s all about.

Konica Minolta Bizhub PRESS 1052 and PRESS C1100 wins BLI’s 2015 PRO Awards Konica Minolta won two Buyers Lab (BLI) 2015 PRO Awards for its bizhub PRESS 1052 and PRESS C1100. Specifically, the bizhub PRESS 1052 secured the award for Outstanding Monochrome Light-to MidVolume Production Device, while the bizhub PRESS C1100 proved a sturdy competitor in its category and was awarded Outstanding Colour Mid-Volume Production Device. The BLI PRO awards go to the best performers in BLI’s production field testing, which assesses a wide range of the most important features and performance factors for buyers, including productivity, image quality, media handling, ease of use and job management. Based on BLI’s reports, both bizhub models performed exceptionally well over the course of testing, with the bizhub 1052 outperforming its competitors in nearly all 20 speed tests, and the bizhub C1100 scoring at least four and a half stars in all of the tested categories. In addition, while the bizhub PRESS 1052 earned BLI’s highest five star rating for productivity, the bizhub PRESS C1100 also performed flawlessly in several

areas, earning five star ratings for colour consistency, text and fine lines. “The award reaffirms our devoted endeavour to innovate and create quality products for our customers and it offers us an impetus to continue the good work and further enhance our services both in terms of reach as well as offerings,” said V.Balakrishnan EGM, Konica Minolta Business solutions. Both models were further commended by BLI for their exceptional media handling capabilities, withstanding a media weight support of up to 350 gsm, which is higher than that of most rivals. Additionally, both bizhub models were easy to use. Featuring a well-designed control panel, user-friendly media catalogue programming and dragand-drop hot folder functionality, the bizhub PRESS 1052 gives users the ability to preview jobs and easily edit job tickets from the device touchscreen, should settings need to be changed. On the other hand, contributing to ease of use for bizhub PRESS C1100 is the controller, which offers user-friendly job ticketing and

extensive colour management, and enables operators to reorder and add or delete pages without needing to reRIP files before printing. For 50 years, Buyers Lab (BLI) has been the independent office-equipment testing lab and business consumer advocate. In addition to publishing comprehensive and accurate test reports on office document imaging devices, the company has been a source of competitive intelligence for industry professionals on copiers, printers, fax machines, scanners, duplicators, wideformat devices and multifunctional products.

BOBST Conference and Open House Latest developments in high barrier films and short run gravure printing stir participants’ interest at BOBST event.

150 guests attended the conference and open house by BOBST held on 28 and 29 October 2014 in S. Giorgio Monferrato, Italy. The event was held in the historic Castello di Uviglie in the Monferrato hills. The attendees heard about the latest developments from a line-up of speakers including BOBST experts and representatives of leading international companies from throughout the flexible packaging value chain. The speakers addressed the challenges and opportunities that the latest materials, systems and production tools represent to the growth strategies of printing and converting companies.

True to its reputation as an innovator focused on creating value to satisfy the different requirements of converters in a constantly evolving industry, BOBST addressed the latest trends in new barrier technologies and short run gravure printing.

New barrier technologies are developing at a very fast pace and a new generation of clear films and coatings are challenging more traditional barrier packaging structures. As regards the technicalities of manufacturing and the physical properties of these new materials, the presentations from Bobst Manchester and Reifenhäuser were particularly insightful. Dr Carolin Struller from Bobst Manchester, illustrated the company’s in-depth research on AlOx clear coating, from the way it is produced and its performance on various filmic substrates, through to its barrier retention with subsequent processes of

printing and converting. Bobst Manchester has, and continues to, carry out extensive trials on the process and is researching ways that in the future could enhance their printability and prevent barrier loss during converting. Kurt Freye and Daniele Cerizzi from Reifenhäuser Kiefel Extrusion and Reifenhäuser Cast Sheet Coating presented the latest developments in blown film and cast extrusion for high barrier applications which reflect the trend for lower pack weights yet with increasing pack performance. This makes 9 to 11 layer films an important trend which has generated several ongoing projects for machines which can produce increasingly sophisticated multi-layer structures using less material. Paolo Serafin, for Taghleef Industries, presented their EXTENDO film applications, offering solutions for better recycling. He also advocated that the day should to be a forum for discussion and cooperation within an industry aiming to find solutions for reducing the environmental impact of packaging. As regards short run gravure printing, Stuart Jones of Janoschka spoke about the innovations the company has been working on in rotogravure sleeve systems,

After an automatic splice, carried out on the rewinder at maximum speed, a print sample master was collected before changing the color on one print unit from light peach to very dark brown and resuming printing at full production speed. The speed of changeover being very critical in terms of profitability when printing very short runs, an operator demonstrated how fast and easy it was on a print unit which was in stand-by during printing. After a few minutes of printing, the machine was stopped and the washing sequence of the cylinder and ink pan started on a selected print unit, prior to the ink being changed back from dark brown to the original light peach color. Guests followed the on-board washing sequence from animations displayed on a Dr Carolin Struller, KTP Research Associate, Bobst Manchester, speaking about AlOx coated transparent barrier films and their conversion for packaging applications, at the Castello di Uviglie.

as well as on the retail trends for mass customization. Professor Armin Weichmann, from Stuttgart Media University, illustrated the studies that the institute is carrying out on conductive layers, cylinder stability and the feasibility of nickel to replace copper and chromium in engraved cylinders. The professor also spoke about how the Rotomec MW 60 gravure press installed in the university press room is a key part of all its projects because it nears productions conditions - something which is essential for the validity of the trials carried out on the behalf of converters. The gravure technology update was rounded up by Giovanni Caprioglio from Bobst Italia, who illustrated the comprehensive range of BOBST gravure presses for flexible materials, focusing on the Minimized Waste concept of the Rotomec MW 60 Ι 80 press. Dedicated to very short run printing, the Rotomec MW 80 brings together all the essential requisites for profitable operation, namely minimized waste of material, minimized energy consumption and minimized space requirement. Of great interest to all participants was the insightful presentation of Philippe Roulet from Nestlé, who illustrated all the factors that determine the way packaging needs to evolve in order to better respond to the new and diverse requirements of the consumer.

December 2014

Breaking the rules, generating value for the consumer, streamlining and standardizing the structures of materials wherever possible, and implementing new technologies into processes were just a few of the key issues presented.

At the BOBST Italia production plant After lunch at the castle, the action moved to the nearby Bobst Italia production plant. A press completely operated from floor level, the 850 mm web-width Rotomec MW 80 awaited the open house guests in Bobst Italia’s Technology Center and was ready to start printing a demo job on a 12 micron PET substrate coated with AlOx. One highlight of the gravure demonstration was the capability of BOBST technology to handle AlOx coated substrates which, in differing from conventional films, present challenges to printing and converting equipment. A further highlight was the effectiveness of the MW 80 on-board washing system. The print run also showed the validity of the BOBST MW Minimized Waste concept, starting with the TAPS function to set the machine in register. At the completion of the TAPS sequence, which lasted a few minutes, the screen on the machine registered incomparably low substrate waste.

screen, whilst also being able to check on a separate screen the register accuracy and stability, most particularly during acceleration and deceleration. After another automatic splice at maximum production speed, the machine was stopped and a second sample taken in order to measure the color difference with the print sample master. The Delta E value between the two compared samples was very low, clearly showing the efficiency of the BOBST internal washing system in avoiding contamination from one color to the other, especially considering the great difference of shades in reverting back from a very dark brown intermediate color. Once the demonstration was over, guests were able to get close to the machine to visually see the results of the washing sequences from the ink pan and cylinders which were taken out of the MW 80 press for checking. A demonstration on the BOBST CL 850D, confirmed the laminator’s quality, efficiency and flexibility. The machine, featuring the renowned BOBST flexo coating system, laminated a 7.0 micron aluminium substrate onto a 12 micron PET film. The Rotomec system enables a lower coating weight of solvent-based adhesive to be applied directly to the aluminium foil, creating excellent bond strength. The machine produced a flawless, high quality, duplex laminated structure at a speed of 430 m/min. The event ended back at the historical Castello di Uviglie with cocktails and dinner.

Record-breaking production with Rapida 106 18,964sph net equals 127,625 sheets in less than 7 hours. KBA North America congratulated Winston Packaging, a fourth-generation family-owned printed paperboard packaging company located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for its record-setting performance. This world record breaking attempt took place on 11 August on the company’s six-color Rapida 106. The press ran 127,625 sheets of 74 x 106cm (29.5 x 41.5in) paperboard in less than seven hours with an average speed of 18,964sph. The average output of the Rapida 106 which can run at speeds of up to 20,000sph was thus higher than the maximum output of any other press in this format class. James Gordon, president and CEO of Winston Packaging: “We are proud to be operating this high-performance Rapida press at our facility. This amazing record reinforces our purchase decision to go with a KBA and clearly shows that we have the most productive medium-format press on the global market.” Several factors helped to determine the final result of this new world job production record at Winston Packaging starting with a truckload of paperboard that ran well on the press and the firm’s best press crew working that day. James Gordon: “We’ve run this same product many times previously but never achieved much higher than 17,500sph average run speed for an entire eight to ten-hour shift. Our talented press operators made it happen using all of the tools available to them on the press.”

press, our press operators have been able to use the high level of automation that they didn’t have before. Our customers are quite impressed with the Rapida as well.” Gordon and his entire family of employees at Winston Packaging could not be more proud of their world record. “Being a third-generation owner of a 103-year-old family business, I can say with confidence that this is the first world record we have ever achieved, at least during my 36 years of service,” says Gordon. Winston Packaging was founded in 1911 in downtown Winston-Salem as a commercial printing shop by Alexander G. Gordon. He was a journeyman bookbinder and entrepreneur who promoted the use of color in the printing industry. R.J.

Reynolds Tobacco Co. became one of the company’s largest customers after its inception and remained so for 82 years. John R. Gordon succeeded his father as company president in 1953. His experience as an industrial engineer helped bring new technologies to the company. He added offset printing presses and improved the workflow processes and management techniques. Over the years, Winston Printing shifted its operation from commercial printing to printed-paperboard packaging, and, since 1999, has done business as Winston Packaging. The company has 46 regular employees and designs and makes paperboard packages for consumer products for a wide range of industries in the USA and Canada.

Not only did Winston produce its recordbreaking world job production record on its Rapida 106 in August 2014, but the company was also recognized by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) for achieving a major milestone for safety as it reached 500,000 hours without an incident (lost time accident). The record-breaking Rapida came online in January 2013 and was Winston Packaging’s first KBA press. Gordon: “This press combines the best of both worlds: very fast set-ups and best-in-class run speeds. After receiving sufficient training on the

Food Packaging Seminar Report UV and EB are established core curing technologies – but are they completely safe for use on food packaging print? The perfect recipe for radiation curing for food packaging has not yet been proposed or defined by the EU legislators. All that exists today are the GMP and Framework Regulation, as well as Swiss Ordinance, respected and now widely adopted across the food packaging supply chain, but still something less than the definitive answer. This situation was the driving force behind the Food Packaging Seminar held in Stuttgart in September by RadTech Europe, the regional association promoting the radiation curing technologies across all markets. The event drew together around 90 participants – all experienced specialists from the various disciplines related to the food packaging value chain (raw materials, printing inks, equipment, materials, and brand owners) – to discuss and debate the proper use of radiation curing in food-safe printing, with the aim of enabling this technology – which delivers a broad platform of benefits – to achieve its well-deserved maximum potential.

Market overview Stephen Harrod, author of many specialist market reports for Smithers Pira on aspects of packaging and print, set the scene with an overview of the global packaging market and its current ‘megatrends’. He forecast 2014 growth in the revived global economy at ±3.5%, and annual global growth to 2018 at 4%. Food packaging – a €55 billion market in 2013 – will, he said, show 2.1% real annual growth to 2018, led by the meat, fish and poultry; chilled foods (including ready meals); and fresh food and vegetable sectors. UV curing, in this dynamic environment, has much to offer: good environmental credentials (no VOCs or solvents); fast turnaround; and high performance. Barriers to its use are currently cost – in terms of inks, varnishes, and energy usage; perceived lack of ease of use; heat from standard UV lamps; healthcare ‘scares’ involving migration of print through the packaging substrate; and recycling challenges. Summarising, Mr Harrod drew attention to the strong growth in inkjet print. UV inkjet is already enjoying a CAGR of 14.8%, and there are considerable and continuing refinements in the technology base – printheads, inks,

42

December 2014

curing systems, android integrations, and presses. ‘Packaging is a great opportunity’, said Mr Harrod, for this versatile print technology.

The applied chemistries Francis Bergiers, technical service and development specialist at Allnex, then provided a comprehensive overview of the applied chemistries involved in printing and packaging. The partner UV and EB curing inks must deliver viscosity, pigment wetting, cure speed, adhesion, flexibility, scratch resistance; and resistance to chemicals such as solvents. For food packaging print, additional requirements are low odour, no taste transfer, and low migration. All this must come, he underlined, at an acceptable price. Mr Bergiers highlighted recent innovations with particular relevance for food packaging, such as self-curing acrylates; acrylates that deliver higher purity; acrylates with an improved compromise between high molecular weight and viscosity; and the ability to achieve higher acrylate functionality whilst using lower viscosity systems.

and hoses are among the risks involved in food processing; and packaging materials – paper, board, plastic, metal, glass, coatings, inks, and adhesives – are risks to finished or semi-finished products, as are a host of auxiliary items, such as straws, ice cream sticks, drinks dispensers. Dr Klump said that ‘consumers are very aware that there are problems out there with their food’ – highlighting the recent horsemeat scandal, and reminding participants that governmental, NGO, and media coverage means that the consumer focus ‘goes viral’. In such a complex supply chain, involving many specialist suppliers of chemicals and raw materials as well as converters, packers, brand owners, and retailers, a publicly- identified safety problem can have serious consequences for a brand. Nestlé’s outstanding and continuing commitment to mitigating such brand risk through its packaging safety and compliance programme is long-established and proven, and Dr Klump adjured the assembled seminar participants to join him and ‘think like a food company’.

‘Think like a food company!’ With the technology base clearly explained, it was time to hear from the customer: Dr Stephen Klump, Global Head of Packaging Quality and Safety, for Nestlé. His subject was ‘Managing Risk’. He outlined the many risks associated with the many different materials which come into contact with food items. Conveyor belts, plastic moulds, pipes

The Nestlé CoC Suppliers across the value chain do not always deliver what they promise. If there is a problem, he said, it is the supplier’s responsibility to ‘find out before someone else finds out for you’. He listed the problems his company has experienced in the packaging arena since 1991 – a list

pressideas/ plc

which, of course, includes mineral oils, BPA and ITX, and odour issues. He detailed an agenda through which suppliers can ensure that they perform to the standards of the Nestlé certificate of compliance, in parallel with EU and FDA regulations and directives. All the CoC’s requirements are clearly and transparently communicated to the supplier base, and all are regularly updated.

Testing and legislation The next seminar session focussed on the current status of legislation and testing, and the opportunities and threats they represent. Dr Andreas Grabitz, technical and legal expert at Eurofins Consumer Product Testing, presented two scholarly and instructive papers: the first on the principles and specialities of analytical testing of UV inks and coatings in a variety of situations; and the second on the extant diverse legal requirements relating to food packaging from a safety viewpoint, including detail on the Swiss and upcoming German Ordinances.

European Printing Inks Association’s viewpoint Putting the science into action was the topic addressed, appropriately, by the Chairman of the European Printing Inks Association’s Energy Curing Work Group, Nick Ivory, who is also Technical Director of Sun Chemical. EuPIA is actively supporting the ongoing use of energy curing products in food packaging print. In this regard, he welcomed the work being done by various acrylate and photoinitiator suppliers on Dossiers for submission under the Swiss and German Ordinances, a move that will help establish more lenient migration limits for common photoinitiators and acrylates. This initiative is

supported by EuPIA by supplying migration data. After detailing all the practical concerns and issues, he expressed the difficulties the industry has in pinpointing the correct way forward in the imprecise legal framework. ‘In the absence of recognised EU legislation’, he remarked, ‘it’s a bit like global warming!’ He concluded, however, that energycuring products CAN safely be used in food packaging scenarios as long as their suitability is fully assessed.

Low-migration inkjet inks Dr Marc Graindourze of Agfa Graphics focussed on low-migration inkjet ink technology for printing food packaging which, he said, is offering a whole new raft of possibilities for today’s brand owners, and is also environmentally friendly. Opportunities include mass customisation, just-in-time printing, promotions, and variable data printing – all using a print technology that is versatile, fast, reliable, and whose setup can be customised for specific applications. Agfa Graphics’ low-migration ink technology is delivering a printed result that is ‘testing positive’ for eliminating migration and set-off in a variety of food and pharmaceutical packaging applications and is a solution for direct print on to a packaging substrate – a coming solution, he said, because adding a label to packaging involves three steps, whereas direct print takes just one. The new Agfa Graphics inks will, Dr Graindourze concluded, constitute an element in an integrated system involving partnership along the supply chain.

The carton industry speaks BPIF Cartons’ Technical Director, John Wilson, who is also Product and Applications

Manager at Sun Chemical, completed the formal programme with a view from the mainstream packaging industry on the safe use of radiation curing. Printers in the food packaging arena choosing to take the radiation-cured low-migration inks route are facing a number of new challenges – and many questions for which they need answers both from their brand owner/ retailer and their own suppliers. The BPIF are actively supporting their members with the creation of a low migration questionnaire which they can use with their suppliers as a discussion document, creating a technical focus at meetings, and exploring the new ‘barrier boards’ that the board mills are now introducing to the market. Mr Wilson admitted that BPIF Cartons are also closely following the Nestlé and EuPIA guidelines – proof that, in an industry sector where there is still no legislative clarity, the supply chain is taking the initiative and creating its own consensus.

Summing up General Secretary Mark Macaré concluded that the RadTech Europe seminar ‘brought the industry closer to achieving full clearance for UV/EB curing in the food packaging segment.’ RadTech Europe (RTE), founded in 1988 in Switzerland and headquartered in The Hague (The Netherlands), is the European industry association that promotes the development, use and benefits of UV/EB curing technology for the markets of Graphic arts, Adhesives, Electronics, Industrial Coatings, Automotive, Medical, Dental, Cosmetics and an array of new emerging applications.

A prizewinning product with a prizewinning label Rhyton Cretan Thyme Honey is a winner on two different fronts: as a first-quality speciality gastronomic product, and as an outstanding example of how to label and pack such a product. Brought to market by Rhyton – a Greek co-operative supporting gastronomic products from a network of local producers – the honey is a perfect marriage of flavour and good looks. Awarded a Golden Star in the Great Taste Awards for 2014 – for the second year running – Rhyton Cretan Thyme Honey joins an exclusive club, because the UK Guild of Fine Food’s annual international taste index of speciality foods and beverages is widely recognised as the ‘foodie Oscars’. But that is not all. In the annual international FINAT Label Competition, promoted by Europe’s label industry association, Rhyton Cretan Thyme Honey’s self-adhesive label, printed by the Greek self-adhesive label specialists N. Cabas S.A., took first prize in the food products category.

Sometimes less is more This particular award was indeed proof that sometimes less is more, because the label employed just two colours on a silver substrate to deliver the premium, luxury result. Tony White, chairman of the judging panel for the FINAT Label Competition, explains the jury’s thinking: ‘This is a really nicely printed label. The chosen typeface and the two Pantone® ink colours really complement the design without subsuming it, and the choice of a PP film substrate is a practical choice for moisture-resistance and wipe-ability. In recent years we have seen a lot of Cabas’ work in the Label Competition – winning many category and group awards – so their success in this year’s prizewinners’ lineup is no surprise.’ Printed by rotary letterpress on UPM Raflatac’s PP Silver Gloss TC50 self-adhesive labelstock, and protected by a matt UV varnish, the label also contributes a valuable security feature: a tamper-evident seal over the jar lid. Comments Panos Cabas, General Manager of Athens-based Cabas S.A.: ‘Rhyton Cretan Thyme Honey’s label design represents the collection of pollen and nectar from the flower by a bee. The

44

December 2014

visualization of this process becomes the identity of this exquisite honey, and accompanies it to every destination. ‘Our challenge was to help the product stand out with a label that would enable the illustration to be the protagonist. So we printed on a gloss polypropylene labelstock that provided a neutral, pearly (yet sophisticated) background, and used just two colours – one simulating the color of honey for the small, yet significant, details, and the other black, for the rest of the “story” – in order to achieve the desired final outcome. The label was then finished with a matt varnish to ensure an equable visual outcome from every angle.’

Shared standards of excellence Rhyton’s representatives, Michalis Arkopoulos and Nikos Mexis add: ‘We share the same standards and passion for excellence and quality with our co-operators Cabas, and we are proud to see our common values awarded.’

Tony White concludes: ‘It is always a pleasure to see the functional qualities of a self-adhesive label – high-quality print, clean, accurate diecutting, and perfect on-pack positioning and application – partnered by first-class, thoughtful decorative qualities.’ Rhyton Cretan Thyme Honey is available in specialty food shops across Europe. For full details of the 2014 winners’ lineup in the FINAT Label Competition visit www.finat.com. FINAT, founded in Paris in 1958 with headquarters in The Hague (The Netherlands), is the world-wide association for manufacturers of self-adhesive labels, related products and services and adjacent narrow-web product decoration and identification. With 600 members in over 50 countries around the world, FINAT has much to offer to label converters and all suppliers to the labeling industry in terms of information exchange and the opportunity to network internationally.

Gallus is therefore recruiting more specialist and management staff with expertise in digital printing. The management team at Gallus is aware that there is much more to market success than an outstanding printing press system. The Swiss company is showing how seriously it is taking its entry into the digital printing technology segment by looking to recruit new marketing, sales and service staff. What started with a truly amazing achievement in the Gallus and Heidelberg development departments – namely developing a fully functional digital printing machine system in this joint project in the space of just twelve months – is now to be continued with the same intensity. “The digital world moves much faster than the conventional one. To ensure that we live up to our goal of ‘success and security for the labelprinter’ in digital

label printing, too, we are going to boost both our staff and our expertise in this area,” explains Stefan Heiniger, COO of the Labels division at Gallus. Additional staff is being sought for building up sales and service for the digital label printing machine in particular. The company is looking to build up a pool of experts with wide-ranging prepress know-how in systems and application support, for example. This underlines the special position that digital printing enjoys in the Gallus product portfolio as a whole. “Besides needing a first-class product, the success of a mechanical engineering company greatly depends on the competence shown in sales and service when dealing with customers,” says Stefan Heiniger. “Outstanding customer service is incredibly important – particularly for a technology that changes as rapidly as high resolution inkjet printing. We will ensure that our customers can operate the Gallus DCS 340 really profitably and can open up new business potential using this digital printing press system.” Gallus already maintains a virtually global service network for conventional label printing. A joint service

network for digital printing is also being built up with Heidelberger Druckmachinen AG. “Thanks to our outstanding link-up with Heidelberg, the comprehensive, highperformance service our customers expect from us will already be in place in time for the market launch in September 2015,” says Christof Naier, Head of Sales and Marketing at Gallus. The Gallus Group is a global market player developing, producing and selling narrowweb, reel-fed presses designed for label manufacturers. Its folding carton business offers a range of wide-web, reel-fed presses and die-cutters for the cost-effective in-line production of folding cartons and cardboard products. The machine portfolio is augmented by a broad range of screen printing plates (Gallus Screeny), globally decentralised service operations, and a broad offering of printing accessories and replacement parts. The comprehensive portfolio also includes consulting services provided by label experts in all relevant printing and process engineering tasks. The Gallus Group is a member of the Heidelberg Group and employs around 560 people, of whom 260 are based in Switzerland. The group headquarters is in St. Gallen.

Conference on business education in packaging The 1st European Conference on the Future of Business Education in Packaging will take place on Thursday April 23rd, 2015. Every second, 100,000 products are packaged and distributed globally by industry and retail – and unpacked by the end-user. For Europe, the estimate is 25,000 products each second. This makes packaging one of the most intensely discussed and complex activities of our times, with tens of thousands of professionals daily involved. How does the European industry nurture the talents within the organisation and how do we implement the life-long education and training of the

ageing knowledge workers in packaging? This one-day conference tries to find answers, connects industry with education and training institutes and provides a concise view on how to maintain an agile workforce in the field of packaging to the benefit of industry, education institutes and society as a whole. The conference will take place at The Gallery in Enschede, The Netherlands. The conference addresses the needs of managers in HRM and in other functions responsible for or involved in the development of skills, know-how and

knowledge of the workforce in the field of packaging within their company. Students at higher education institutes in Europe and NVC Packaging Professionals have free access to the conference. The conference is a unique and attractive platform for organisations offering business education and training in packaging. A research study is being performed, examining the needs of business for attracting, maintain and nurturing talent in packaging. The results will be presented at the conference.

Rotoflex unveils latest Die Cutting Design Rotoflex has redesigned its well-known DSI die cutting platform which will answer the demand of converters to have more streamlined finishing workflows and increased productivity. The new DSI die cutting platform is a smaller footprint machine which is faster and more responsive to today’s changing production requirements.

Rotoflex URC 2.0 control system, ensuring precise tension control and enhanced accuracy in die cutting and slitting. In addition to higher quality output, speeds are dramatically increased as well. The updated platform can now perform accurate slitting and die cutting at speeds up to 1000 fpm (305 m/min), a 30% increase over production speeds of legacy DSI models.

A powerful contributor to this redesign is the incorporation of servo drives into the platform. Smaller than the legacy AC vector motors, this reengineering has decreased the size of the power cabinet significantly, thereby reducing the footprint, a real benefit in facilities where floor space is at a premium. The independently driven servo drives manage the unwind, die cut, matrix and rewinds, and are controlled by the proprietary

Production managers will appreciate the versatility of this new Rotoflex DSI as well. Idle equipment does not contribute to productivity, and if a job only requires inspection and rewinding, die cutting equipment may sit idle during that job run. The updated design of the Rotoflex DSI accommodates a variety of inspection systems and the die cutting unit can be disengaged for specific jobs, meaning it may

be run as a slitter/rewinder or as a die cutter, accommodating more applications and job types. This allows production managers to better manage job mix and optimize workflows.

ETI Converting Equipment releases a new Flexo Printing Station ETI Converting Equipment, manufacturer of in-line printing and coating equipment, has developed a fully servo-driven gearless flexo printing station using a sleeve system. ETI features servo-drives on each print head providing automatic register control. The anilox roll, the sleeve cylinder and the impression cylinder are independently servodriven to obtain automatic registration without changing the web tension. This module has been designed for very precise registration, even on thin film. The press, equipped with this station, can run at a speed of up to 750 ft/min. (220 m/min.). Moreover, with its

It has sold a creasing kit to a printer based in Ernakulam. Taking part at Ludhiana Expo in October, Autoprint sold five creasers. The company entered into an agreement with Coimbatore based World Print Engineers for marketing its auto-creasing machine Max Auto-Creaser. Autoprint is now the sole marketing agent of Max Auto-Creaser for the 24 x 24 inches, 27

x 27 inches and 30 x 30 inches variant sizes globally. With Max Auto-Creaser it is possible to produce quality creasing, micro-perforating and cutting at up to 15,000 sheets an hour. Not only does the Auto Creaser eliminate digital cracking at press speeds, it also comes equipped with a unique microperforating tool which applies fine and flat quality results, so that sheets can run through laser copiers and printers, trouble free.

The Auto Crease can apply simultaneous creasing and micro-perforating with the bonus of trimming the sheets as well. The cutting tool produces long lasting guillotine quality trimming so that users can produce 2 up or even 3 up copies (cutting tool is optional). All multiple applications can be added, without affecting speed of output. The modular design allows for extra finishing applications to be added.
