Life is such a rush nowadays, it’s not even funny. Just like there’s nothing funny about trying to leave the house in a rush with two toddlers, in winter! By the time you’re out the door, you’re so sweaty, you want to dive into the snow but you don’t dare to open that chaotic can of worms, as you’re already late... I truly believe kids were placed on this earth to force us to slow down. To make us stop in our tracks. To wake us up (usually way too early) so we can smell the roses! Becoming a parent made me stop so I could find my passion. And how lucky am I now today, to guide expecting parents in the most important journey they’ll ever experience. Their journey into parenthood, which marks the beginning of family life. And it is precisely this beauty in family life that Krystyna & Keven from LaLa La Photo (p.14) so superbly capture when children playfully express themselves in their natural environments. In fact, they were the very first photographers that snapped our little family! Only if you allow yourself to slow down, becoming a family can bring you a great sense of clarity. Just ask DeeDee from POPUP Studio (p.4). For her it was exactly this moment of clarity that allowed her to live her uber chic, retro design dream today. And what better place to slow down with family, than one of the nine (soon ten) Youth Hostels (p.24) scattered all over Luxembourg, welcoming all those young at heart. As you’ll notice, the focus of this Edition of the lët’z go local magazine is on families & children. Linda Bos & Karolina Szatna whisk us back to our favourite childhood fairy tales. For me, the magical story of Cinderella will always touch the little girly girl inside me.

MAMA MELUSINA POPUP Studio We met DeeDee, mother of POPUP Studio and charming little boy Julian for the first time when she just started her business adventure. We had a pleasure to work with her on several occasions and observe how she grows her mini empire. Inspired by her hard working attitude we asked her to give us her tips, on how to achieve the perfect balance between work and private life. Can you introduce yourself and the studio to us and tell us where DeeDee comes from in POPUP Studio?

FAVORITE FAIRY TALE I admired the courage of Gretel and Alice’s curiosity.
I started POPUP Studio full-time not long after becoming a mum to my then four-months-old son. The studio was born out of a wonderfully defined moment of clarity that designing was THE only thing I wanted to do in my life. I studied Graphic Design but I felt like it was not enough, so I started designing and sewing accessories for adults and children. Then, I taught myself different printing techniques to apply my illustrations onto fabric myself. It was more real, more tactile and I found it much satisfying than just seeing my designs on paper. I love retro style, bold colours and patterns. I care about where materials I use come from. I am a big fan of up-cycling vintage fabrics into home decoration items, using organic and fair trade philosophy, especially when I outsource baby clothes and I use small local businesses for services. In 2013 we have asked you to design a workshop for kids: ‘Making your own Melusina doll’. From this very first prototype to the royal family, can you tell us the story? When you approached me to design the Melusina for the workshop, I never suspected for a second how big it would get! The truth is, it was designed exclusively for the lët’z go local workshop and it was supposed to be a one-off, but everyone loved it so much, I soon had so many orders for Melusinas, I could barely keep up with the production. It was a great way to show how much Luxembourg has changed past few years and present this funky and stylish side of it, while still preserving its culture and heritage.

Then, one day I receive a phone call from the Palace with a very friendly voice asking me if I could make a very special Melusina for the Grand Duchess as her Christmas present for her granddaughter, little Princes Amalia. I was absolutely thrilled by it on many levels. It was a wonderful gratification of countless hours spent building up my studio from virtually nothing, but also a proof of how open-minded and multicultural Luxembourg is. In a way it made me feel truly local. Does design approach changes when you become a parent? How was it in your case and did your manner about design changed when you became a mum? In my case, things did change after I have become a mum because I gained confidence to design for children much more. Before that, I designed toys but I did not attempt accessories or clothes. I just felt I did not know enough about it. After having my son, I knew exactly what I was missing when I cared for him and how I wanted things to look and behave. I quickly sensed a market niche for unique, high-quality products for parents who are not into gadgets but funky yet down-to-earth essentials. I still have a very long list of ideas I had while looking after my son, which I hope to be able to realise one by one and to extend my offer of items designed for babies and children but with parents in mind. Can you talk to us about the fun of designing for kids and with kids in mind? Designing for babies and children is great fun! I started from making things for my son, so it was very personal from the very beginning. Then, I noticed other parents were responding very strongly to what I was making for Julian, because it was pragmatic and handy but still very funky, colourful and retro. My son had this big personality literally from day one, so I felt mellow, pastel clothes simply did not do him justice. To me, the most challenging aspect of it is how personal it is. There is so much emotion involved in everything regarding children, so you need to try extra hard to get it just right. It is funny, because I always thought it would be a stop-over for me on the way to fashion design but once I started, I loved it too much to stop and now I am working towards expanding my range and bringing out new fabrics and patterns but also entirely new items I want to perfect and adjust to my philosophy of high-quality, ethical design. ‘Mumpreneur’ is a hype word at the moment, could you reveal your take on it and tell us about managing your own design studio while being a parent? Would you have any tips and observations about seeking a balance between professional and private life for other ‘Mumpreneurs’? “Make your smartphone your best friend and your dedicated assistant.” I thought of myself simply as “a woman in business” rather than “a mum in business”.Many people ask me how it is to be a mum and run my own business but I can only tell you how it

is to be a single mum and run my own creative business and the simplest answer is: tough but also insanely satisfying. If this is something you are considering, you need to prepare yourself for a real roller coaster. You should do your research, get everything in place and prepare yourself as much as you can, but still expect many surprises. First positive feedback and first small successes are an unbelievable high and fuel all the sleepless nights and very early mornings. When you do what you love, you find energy when you really thought there was none left. If we are talking about a balance between work and private life, my main advice is: do what works for you. There is no secret recipe or schedule that will fit all. Whatever schedule and timetable you choose, remember to stick to it. Do not mix work and private life or it will leave you feeling frustrated and guilty. Instead, learn to apply what I call “an office mode”. It is a skill I am still mastering but it does work. Be insanely organised! Make your smartphone your best friend and your dedicated assistant. Have a good set of apps managing your schedule, deadlines, emails and ideas on the go but do not check things during your private time, no matter how tempting it may be. Remember, keeping your goals realistic does not mean you cannot dream big, it only means you have to be aware of what resources you have and how long it will take to get there.

How did it all come about that you have started a children’s publishing house? I was born in Luxembourg. My family lived there and we could take advantage of its support and a warehouse to store the books. And also, as far as we imagined, a short competitive market in Luxembourg regarding book publishing. At this time, we thought there’d be a small space for us. There must be vast obstacles being a book publisher in a time of smart devices. Do we (parents and kids) still read hard books? And do you think we read enough? Hard books are not in competition with apps or e-books. A real book remains a thing people like to get, read, show in their private library. A book is something we all enjoy manipulating and gifting. The smart devices market is a specific market with specific products and also specific behavior which doesn’t compete with real books world. About reading, I definitively think we read enough, and especially children illustrated books. Children illustrated books are still seen as a good way to build awareness and knowledge for children. What would be the advantages of hard books and why should we turn to real (kids) books instead of electronic copies? I think both concepts (real books / e-books) have not the same goal. The assets of real books are multiple : shape, size, design, template. As a real book publisher, we can act on many sides of the real book (as an object) to create a funny and entertaining display. A child can read it with somebody else, touch it, play the teacher or the book seller, show it… An electronic device has many other qualities : easily transportable, light, with interactive options (like multilingual versions). Related to the problematic of your survey: Pipite has disappeared, Ilma is not ill, Anne in the city. These 3 titles exist in 2 forms: real bilingual books (French-English, Spanish, German, Italian) and e-apps with specific activities and simultaneous version featuring Luxembourgish as well. To read, to hear and to play with foreign languages. They belong to a collection (P’ti Bili [Petits Bilingues]) inspired by our location in Luxembourg, a multilingual country. They’re available on app store, google and Amazon. I’d like to focus also on Adama (the story of a clandestine child, hiding to escape the police but eventually helped by his school friends) and La cigogne de fer qui déposa mon frère (the beautiful story of an adoption and the arrival of a young

Korean boy in his foster family in France). These books speak both of the difference and the ways to face it. A good mean to aware children on these social issues. These 2 books are supported by Amnesty International Luxembourg (Adama) and La Croix Rouge Luxembourgeoise (La cigogne). Moreover, even targeting on serious social topics, they play mild and entertaining tales supported by rich drawings taking care of children interest. For many people it is a challenge to work and live in a multilingual community. Would you have any tips for parents on how to improve their kids skills when it comes to languages? I think a good way to improve children language skills is to play with languages and find solutions to lead children towards foreign languages through the game. There are many displays to play with languages: books, CD, apps. But the most important is to play : learning without struggling.

We asked the PolishLuxembourgish duo in life and business to talk to us about their work, inspirations and ideas for the future. Charmed by the location of their atelier and their story for a moment we felt like we escaped into another world. Can you please introduce your project to us and tell us how LaLa La Photo was born, mentioning what’s the melody behind the name?

We are LaLa La Photo: Keven Erickson and Krystyna Dul two photographers specialised in children and family photography. The compilation of our different perspectives and visual styles beautifully harmonises with each other. We love watching children learn to trust us so that their personality shines through our images. Our main focus is to bring back the appreciation towards printed images providing gallery standard pictures to fully complement home interiors. The idea of LaLa La Photo was born during a very cold winter in beautiful Krakow, Poland, where we were living at the time. As Keven was born and raised in Luxembourg, we decided to return to his homeland and launch LaLa La Photo in Luxembourg. We have always appreciated working with children loving their natural spontaneity, curiosity and total lack of preconceptions about their own image. While exploring an identity, we faced two basic questions: how to be memorable? - obviously our names would be difficult to remember; and how to sound positive but not complicated. We used to call our easy sunny afternoons lalala’ing around and the name was born! LaLa La Photo came to us naturally, easy to remember, sounding happy and relaxed and easily associated with childhood playfulness but also with the visual aspects of photography. Even when focusing on business portraits, our LaLa La name makes people smile.

Your atelier is based in the stunning surrounding of Château de Wintrange. Can you tell us how is it to work in a place with such a history? How does it influence your work, ideas and inspirations? First of all, we could have never imagined that we could work in such an amazing place on a daily basis. This place reflects its rich history throughout the many rooms, every corner and object carries its own untold story. This hidden castle is a great source of inspiration. Working on a long-term project for the castle’s owner, we have been photographing Château de Wintrange for the past years. This allows us to tune into the castle’s rhythm and feel its soul. The Château is surrounded by a vast, stunning secret garden carefully tended by a skilled gardener. We like to choose places for our photo sessions with a similar atmosphere. You mostly work with children and families, which is very demanding and challenging, could you reveal your work secret? To ensure a good atmosphere while taking pictures, we offer photo sessions where children can playfully express themselves as we capture these precious moments for their families to cherish. Our so-called studio is the children’s natural environment, using engaging and familiar backgrounds to set the stage.

While working with natural light and with ever moving children, it’s important to be quick and experienced creating great compositions that tell a child’s story. Our secret is to be patient, predicting the child’s next move and press the shutter at the precise moment. Any funny, embarrassing situation that you experienced during a shooting which of course you could share with us? We started getting used to the occasional pee fountain towards the lens while photographing newborns. It’s always a funny moment when we capture and reveal to the parents a sweet and funny expression their child made during the session. Would you be able to give us any industry tips on how to take better photos of children? We will repeat the good old advice - good light is key. Also letting your children be natural and capturing their spontaneity is a good start.

Could you tell us about your brand and how it came about that you became a (children) fashion designer?
Do you have tips for parents on how to style girls and boys without overdoing it.
I did a couple of internships after my studies in Paris and ended up at Lamantine, a luxury Children brand for girls where we would travel to New York twice a year for the Children Fashion Week (Petite Parade)! It’s so nice working with children as they are mostly cheerful and fun also it feels natural working with them. As I came back to Luxembourg I continued doing this and got great feedback. I then decided to launch my own brand under the name of Sophi(e)stication! It’s also a girls collection for the better days. My clothes just have that special seem! They are chic and comfortable!
Kids know what they want to wear! That’s exactly what I like about them and why I love designing them so much. My advice would be: ‘simplicity is the ultimate Sophi(e)stication’.
Your collections are a perfect merge between a simple silhouette and an amazing fabric. How do you choose your patterns and fabrics? I get inspiration from books and magazines but also from far away trips when my head bursts from colours and tones! Mostly I buy my fabrics in Paris, but I always try to bring back something exclusive from my travels such as: embroideries from India this year! Last time we spoke, you were talking about doing a boys collection. Could you reveal more about that? Will there be a dandy look for boys available from your hand in the near future?
Everything you do is executed entirely by you; from the design to the final touches of production. Can you walk us through your inspiring journey from sketch to catwalk and tell us how you manage to find inspiration and energy for it all? Yes indeed, I do everything myself from conception to the finished product and it isn’t always easy, the days are too short to finish what you have started, but I find energy thanks to good organization skills and a lot of passion. Unfortunately there are always lots of ideas that I can’t realize as fast as I would like. What do you find most challenging when working on a collection for children? The most difficult was to find a coherence between boys and girls. All the other difficulties I see as challenges that I happily to take on! Such as convincing people to embrace my collections.
It is very difficult to design for boys; you are limited to certain fabrics, colours, motives and ornaments, yet I have finally finished few unisex models. It’s important for me to keep my style simple, elegant and chic, as much for girls as for boys. There will be some shirts, tunics, and shorts for both. 21

Surrounded by the greens of the valley and the old town skyline, she gave us some tips on what to do this summer to discover the wide diversity of the country. Luxembourg Youth Hostels is a non lucrative association consisting of 9 youth hostels; Beaufort, Bourglinster, Echternach, Hollenfels, Fels, Lultzhausen, Luxembourg, Remerschen and Vianden. A 10th hostel is being built in Esch/Alzette. Since 2004, 4 agreed social structures became part of Luxembourg Youth Hostel: Nursery Krunnemécken in Wintrange, the Maison Relais Remerschen, the Youth House in Vianden and the Maison Relais/Nursery Beaufort. The name ‘Youth Hostels’ suggests we would just admit children and adolescents but this is not the case. Since a few years there is no age restriction anymore and we now welcome the very young, the less young and the ones that stayed young at heart in our network. Whether with the family, as a backpacker, traveling independently, with school or a club - everybody is welcome and can benefit from our services either to sleep, eat and/or take part in our extensive activity program. Your activity calendar is well filled, could you pick out some hi-lights for us for the upcoming season? (from end Mayend September) Nowadays youth hostels are more than only beds. There is a whole range of activities besides the accommodation and catering aspect that can be enjoyed alone or as a group as well for children an teenagers as for adults. This years highlight is a journey to Kilimanjaro from the 3rd to the 14th of October 2015 - a 5.895 meter challenge for adults. Kids can enjoy our indoor playground in Beaufort all year long and the trampoline in Echternach will remain open until the end of October.
Kids’ birthdays can be held at every youth hostel and our coaches from the climbing hall in Echternach are available several times a week. Hikers will find their luck too, either on their own with our hostel to hostel trail, or our guided tours i.e. around the Lake in Lultzhausen the 13th of June, or full moon in Beaufort the 29th of august. Also mountain bikers can get to know our country through our ‘MTB Tour de Luxembourg’ from the 11th - 13th of September. And to help you to prepare your rounds we organize a Bike Mechanic Workshop on the 14th of November in Beaufort as well as a GPS workshop in the Luxembourg city youth hostel on the 28th of November. What can we (residents of Luxembourg) discover and would it be worth spending our holidays in the country instead of across the border? As an example, castle friends will love Hollenfels in the Vallée des Septs Châteaux, Vianden, Beaufort or the Fels. The Müllerthal region - little Switzerland in Luxembourg and the Luxembourgish Ardennes are an absolute must for every friend of nature especially with hikes such as the famous “Müllerthal trail” or the trails from NaturWanderPark Delux. Also cultural activities are available, be it a visit to the oldest town in the country, Echternach or into the Minette, the stronghold of the Luxembourgish steel industry. Of course our capital city has lots to offer too. Our very own Goecaching tour of about 7km, the Luxembourg-City Touristicache (code GC1JENX on www.geocaching.com) lets you discover some of the nicest places. And to complete the tour there is an excursion to the wine region on the program. Of course this comes with an indispensable visit of one of the numerous wine cellars. You produce honey, could you tell us little bit more about this and do you plan on producing any other delicious local goods? The Luxembourg hostel has their beehives on their roof for 2 years now. We work with a bee keeper who looks after the bees so we can produce honey 2 - 3 times a year that we then sell. This is our only product at the moment but we would be eager to install bee hives on the roofs of more hostels if there was an interested bee keeper available. Besides the honey production we have a close relationship with local producers, regional and fair products that we use in our kitchens and we are constantly extending our offer.
A brand new youth hostel is being constructed next to the train station in Esch/Alzette. When do you expect to open the doors? Also, is there anything in particular you could mention about this new hostel and the area it’s located? The Esch hostel will eventually open in summer/autumn 2016. We are very glad especially that this will be the first youth hostel in the south of the country. We would like to work close with the tourist office and local actors as we do it in other regions in order to offer lots of fun touristic and educational programs all around the theme of industry. Also music is quite prominent in Esch through the Rockhal and the Kulturfabrik. Thanks to the university in Belval we will also be able to welcome lots of students as well as exchange students. Further the youth hostel will be equipped with infrastructures to hold conferences and meetings.

We asked Kristina Rasmussen, founder of Avocado, for an inspiring recipe for kids. She gave us a a lovely one for the little ones: nutritional, colourful and easy to make! The boxes have different themes such as; vegetarian, family meals, gluten and lactose free etc.
INGREDIENTS (FOR 4 SERVINGS)
PREPARATION
• 1000 g potatoes • 1 shallot • 400 g carrots • 3 apples • 30 g walnuts • 30 g raisins • 2 eggs • 300 g Greek yoghurt • 1 slicing cucumber
Peel potatoes and grate onto a kitchen towel. Squeeze out any excess water and transfer the grated potato to a bowl. Peel and chop shallot. Add shallot, egg and flour to the potatoes and carefully combine with your hands. Season with a generous pinch of salt and fresh ground pepper. Heat some butter or olive oil in a large pan and drop small portions of the potato mixture into the pan and flatten with a spoon. Fry on medium heat from both sides until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper afterwards.

• salt • pepper • butter or olive oil for frying • 2 garlic cloves • 2 tsp. honey • 2 tbsp. flour • a pinch of sweet paprika powder • a dash of lemon juice or orange juice

Peel and grate carrots. Wash, core and cube apple. Coarsely chop walnuts. In a bowl, combine walnuts, raisins, carrots and apple. Fold in honey and drizzle with a dash of lemon juice. Season to taste with fresh ground pepper.
3. Tzatziki
Grate cucumber into a colander and sprinkle with some sea salt. Let rest for 5-10 min. and squeeze out any excess water afterwards. Peel and crush garlic. In a bowl, combine cucumber, garlic and Greek yoghurt. Season to taste with salt, pepper and a pinch of sweet paprika powder.
4. Serving
Arrange the homemade potato rösti and apple and carrot salad on plates and serve with fresh tzatziki on the side.
