ou don’t need to go very far this summer to find lots of entertainment right across Lincolnshire. We’ve already had a wonderful Jubilee weekend, but summer is only just getting started! In this edition, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy during July and August across the county. In this month’s magazine you’ll find our Getaway Guide and summer entertainment pages, as well as a look at this season’s country shows and a number of quirky properties for a break over the border in North Norfolk courtesy of Barefoot Retreats. Elsewhere? We’re saving lives in the sky with the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance service, we’re exploring Heckington, and we’re enjoying exceptional dining at Magpies in Horncastle, before venturing to the north of the county to explore one of Lincolnshire’s heritage industries in Barton, hand-making clay roof tiles and pots. Our best wishes, for a great month!

FULL REFURBISHMENT OF GRADE II LISTED CENTRAL MARKET IS NOW UNDERWAY...

LINCOLN Works are now underway at Lincoln’s Grade II listed Central Market following investment from Historic England through the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) scheme, which has enabled a programme of historic building restorations designed to revitalise the area and uncover the city’s rich history. £5.9 million investment has also been earmarked for the

project, which will include replacing the roof and lantern, creating a new mezzanine floor, installing new toilets and facilitating the creation of freestanding stalls for local businesses to promote and sell local produce. The market was first built in 1937 and will be another element of the city’s Cornhill Quarter, this time supporting local food producers. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2023. n

Creative Freedom in the Cathedral EDAN LINCS PRESENTS ARTWORK TO HELP END CYCLE OF DOMESTIC ABUSE... LINCOLN EDAN Lincs is hosting an exhibition featuring 30 female artists’ work in the Cathedral as Pride goes to press. Rescheduled due to the pandemic, Creative Freedom will run in the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral until 12th June and features work from three different sources. 30 female artists from up and down the country have spent lockdown creating artwork for EDAN Lincs refuges, making them more welcoming and comforting environments for those escaping domestic abuse. The second group of artists contributed artwork commissioned by The Collection Museum under the guidance of artist Nadya Monfrinoli who helped the group create posters promoting the theme of empowering women.

LOCAL NEWS In Brief

HOLE LOT OF LUCK FOR GOLFER...

We all have good days and bad days on the golf course, but 84-year old golfer Stephen Chadwick couldn’t believe his luck last month when he achieved not one but TWO holes in one at Market Rasen Golf Course. With the chance of achieving a single hole in one 12,500 to one, Stephen described himself as having ‘magic in his swing’ that day! n

10

Finally, a group of Lincolnshire quilters have created a quilt which reflects their experiences of the Covid pandemic and this has been used to raise funds for the group’s work over the past 12 months. EDAN stands for Ending Domestic Abuse Now, and the group’s mission statement is to support and empower all those affected by domestic abuse. To raise awareness of the impacts of domestic abuse and promote intolerance of it. “We are working towards a society in which freedom of movement and speech is the right of everyone to achieve quality of life,” says the charity’s Anna Davis. The exhibition recognises the 21st anniversary of the group. For ways to help support EDAN, or to find out more about the artwork, see www.edanlincs.org.uk. n

Inns on the edge... HISTORY AND CULTURE OF LINCOLNSHIRE PUBS RECORDED BY PROJECT’S MARC KNIGHTON

LINCOLNSHIRE Marc Knighton is on a pub crawl with a difference! With the hospitality industry having endured a difficult couple of years, and with more than 400 pubs having closed across the UK in 2021 alone, the project officer of Inns on the Edge has travelled from Grimsby to Boston to uncover the history of local pubs, recording their heritage for posterity. Marc’s exhibition is currently at the University of Lincoln’s David Chiddick building and will tour the county, appearing in Skegness’s Tower Gardens Pavilion in August. n See letstalk.lincolnshire.gov.uk.

The Sails Turn in

HECKINGTON From heritage and history to a great village show, Heckington is a phenomenal community with plenty to offer visitors this summer! Lead Image: Heckington’s eight-sailed windmill.

THE VILLAGE: HECKINGTON

“Tony Pygott operates his Eight Sail craft brewery from the windmill, and opposite the mill itself is The Bakehouse with its kitchen set up for baking courses!” There was a bit of waiting about back in October 2017. Indeed, I was one of the people who was in situ, clutching a camera and awaiting an encourage as HRH The Princess Royal and her protection officers were chauffeured into the grounds of Heckington Windmill, to officially declare the landmark open after a 10-year restoration totalling £1.65m. The Heckington Windmill Trust had battled long and hard to secure the funding. It had originally been working with the building since 1982, reopening it and ensuring the sails turned from 1986-1999 and then 20042010 when structural defects and the need to repair its sails rudely interrupted production. With sails replaced by Alford millwrights Neil Medcalf and his team, then a site regeneration completed in 2017, the mill – which is unique certainly in the UK, probably the world, for its unusual eight-sailed construction, turned again, with HRH The Princess Royal very happy to celebrate with chairman of the Heckington Windmill Trust, Charles Pinchbeck and with miller Jim Bailey. Today, Tony Pygott also operates his Eight Sail craft brewery from the windmill, and opposite the mill itself is The Bakehouse with its demonstration kitchen set up for baking courses. On the subject of heritage, the charitable trust Heritage Lincolnshire is also based in Heckington. The group now cares for Bolingbroke Castle, Hussey Tower in Boston, Tattershall College, Tupholme Abbey near Bardney and the bunker which housed the Holbeach underground monitoring post, a Cold War nuclear facility... rather less scary is Kirton’s 16th century Old King’s Head, which the Heckington charity also helped to refurbish, opening it last September. >> Left: Heckington’s village green and pub, the village’s train station and St Andrew’s Church.

“Heckington’s railway station is located on the Sleaford to Boston route. It’s still very much in use and incorporates a railway museum too...”

>> Heckington’s railway station is located on the Sleaford to Boston route, which then travels onward to Skegness, and so the line is still very much in use... much like the 1859 railway building which now houses the village’s small but perfectly formed railway museum with its Great Northern Railway, Great Western Railway and model railway artefacts. Part of the Heckington and Helpringham Group of Parishes, Heckington’s St Andrew church is rather impressive for a building in a village of Heckington’s size. Built in the 1300s, particular highlights of the Grade I listed building include the 176ft spire, which was rebuilt in 1888, and the building’s very beautiful original stained glass windows. A building that hasn’t fared as well is Heckington Manor. The building isn’t listed, despite being created in the 18th century on the site of a much older building originally known as Boston Garth. Occupied by Richard Godson and Mary Taylor until the

1950s, the site then became an orphanage, a care home and finally a clinic for the treatment of alcohol addition prior to its closure in 2003. Following speculation that the site was going to be converted into four apartments, development plans were finally abandoned, and the site was sold. Its new owners acquired the site last Autumn, and plan to refurbish the house and bring it back to its former glory. It’ll be quite a convenient location for visiting the Heckington Show, as the site is a stone’s thow from the 60-acres of farmland upon which the event takes place... coincidentally, this month! Last year’s Heckington Show did go ahead, but in a limited form, so the Heckington & District Agricultural Society is looking forward to getting back to some sort of normality, welcoming 30,000 people rather than the 6,000 or so who attended the show last year. >>

>> This year’s event will be the 153rd show, and will include a whole range of main ring entertainment including the Royal British Legion’s band and corps of drummers, plus jousting with the Knights of Nottingham and an evening concert with firework display on Saturday evening. Entertainment on the Saturday night includes leading Take That tribute act, Rule The World. Sunday’s main ring attractions include the National Show Jumpers Championships, the Bolddog Lincs Motorcycle Display Team, plus falconry displays, a vintage tractor drive and a grand parade of livestock. In addition, visitors can enjoy horticulture and giant vegetable displays, heavy horses, trade stands and more. Heckington’s residents are especially proud of their show, and it’s little wonder; the event is thought to be the country’s largest volunteerrun event, as well as the UK’s biggest village show, requiring a huge effort to organise.

The show has been around in some form for over 900 years, linked to the Feast of St Mary, which was traditionally held in August, but in its current form the show dates back to 1863, and has been held at its current location since 1867. Heckington’s community spirit shines through not just during the village show, but with around 30 community groups and organisations operating at parish level, across all sorts of interests... which isn’t half bad for a community whose population is only around 4,000! And finally... if we’re about to enjoy a long hot summer, how about cooling off in just one of those community-led activities? Heckington’s Community Swimming Pool was created in 1974, which was convenient as that year saw an unprecedented heatwave. The pool was handed over to the community in 2009 and it will reopen again as Pride goes to press. It is, of course, staffed by very dedicated volunteers. So, come on in... the water’s lovely! n

“Sitting in the HQ of the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, it’s all peaceful, until… it isn’t.” The service’s reception area overlooks its new, purpose-built airfield, on the opposite side of the A15 to its previous home on a small patch of airbase at RAF Waddington. The new (as of 2021) HQ is lovely and light, and was much needed, as the previous home of the service was outdated, with a separate home in the village of Waddington for fundraising Care in the Air and finance staff. A year later the service flew 365 days a year, and new helicopters in 2000 and 2010 saw the service able to fly further, faster and with a greater payload and more equipment on board. The service’s most recent aircraft landed in 2017. The AgustaWestland 169 can fly in excess of 200mph and is equipped with nightvision equipment, making it technically possible for the service to operate after daylight. Currently the ambucopter flies until

n The crew responded to 1,496 missions in 2021 with each mission costing on average £3,500. n That’s compared to 1,095 missions in 2020 and 877 missions in 2019. n In April 2022, the service responded to 119 missions. n The crew had an exceptionally busy Bank

n By location, the service went to Lincolnshire incidents 77 times, 28 incidents in Nottinghamshire and 14 emergencies beyond those county borders. n Since 1994 the service has flown over 25,000 potentially life-saving missions.

THE LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE

>> Icy roads, slips and falls? No. In fact it’s those summer afternoons, weekends and warm days, which often prove busiest for the crews of the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance service. When the warmer weather brings motorcyclists to the counties’ roads as well as more people taking part in sporting activities, the number of accidents increase and it’s these summer months that sees the county’s very special and entirely independently-funded service come to the rescue. The most obvious feature of the service is the fact that it flies to a casualty, that’s clearly a boon in Lincolnshire, reaching a patient irrespective of problematic congested roads, landing in fields and similarly inaccessible places, and of course, travelling much faster to the patient thanks to a more direct route, faster speed and fewer delays. But that’s really only half the story. The extended skill-set and treatment capability of the doctor-paramedic air ambulance team is second to none, enabling them to provide a wide range of treatment options to patients. This month the service is bracing itself to be busy and its newest doctor, Scott Houston, is

undergoing an intense period of training to equip him for his role with the team, ready to face the summer months ahead. Already an experienced critical care doctor at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, Scott is currently being supervised by an experienced doctor for several weeks before undergoing a sign off shift with a consultant to ensure he’s performing at the top of his game. He has hardly had time to settle in, before facing the summer months with the area’s ambucopter. “The role appealed because in a hospital environment you have access to facilities, to

Saving Lives in the Sky... n The service was founded in 1994. n The service receives absolutely NO funding from the NHS, EMAS, local or national government for its day-to-day operation. Doctors, paramedics and pilots. Scott is pictured second from right.

“I wouldn’t be here without the Air Ambulance...” These are just a few of the stories of those rescued by the service, who will forever be grateful to the team! The Motorcyclist: Andy Braybrook is 33 and from Hough-on-the-Hill. After a motorcycle collision on the A153, he went into cardiac arrest and his lungs collapsed. Because the air ambulance was able to airlift him to Nottingham’s QMC in 15 minutes – an hour sooner than a road-going ambulance would take – Andy survived, and says he can’t thank the crew enough. The Gardener: Alasdair Baker from Spalding was mowing his lawn when he fell and hit his head, breaking his ankle and bones in his lower leg. He was airlifted to hospital in just 17 minutes and is recovering at home.

The Horserider: Ruth from Grantham suffered a broken pelvis and internal injuries when her horse reared up and she fell off. The animal landed on top of her but with the help of the air ambulance, she could be airlifted to Lincoln County Hospital in just seven minutes. She was knocked off her horse again five years later, just a week before her dream wedding. Airlifted to hospital again, Ruth eventually married her partner, although it was six months later than planned... she’s since completed a few fundraising challenges including a 10km run for the service and can still ride her horse thanks to the team.

The Winter Injury: During the ‘Beast from the East,’ Paul got stuck in his car and in attempting to dig away the snow, ‘pulled a muscle in his back.’ He was in great pain and without realising it, hadn’t in fact pulled a muscle but was suffering a heart attack. Snow doesn’t bother the air ambulance, which lifted Paul to Lincoln County Hospital where he underwent a life-saving operation. The Youngster: Joe was playing in his local park when a motorcycle, jumping a red light, ploughed into the youngster. His injuries were extensive but he miraculously survived and now raises money for the service and has recently completed a 14 mile sponsored walk. n

n During 2021 the service transitioned from a 24/5 service to a full 24/7 clinical service and since the 1st Sept 2021 it has covered 24 hours every day with a clinical team. n RTCs and medical incidents have been the main incident type the charity’s teams have attended accounting for 76%, the rest have been assaults, sports and leisure, industrial incidents, incidents on the railways and accidental. n The service covers 3,500 square miles, with its population of over 2.5m people. n Recently the service has been able to increase its nightflying operations thanks to new night vision equipment.

staff and to equipment,” says Scott. “But working with the Air Ambulance doctorparamedic team you have only what you bring with you to the scene.” Originally from Scotland and a graduate of the Glasgow Medical School, Scott found he had a particular interest in critical care and after completing rotations in conventional medical specialisms, spent an extra year on an A&E rotation before pursuing a three year post-graduate specialism working in intensive care settings, rotating around general ICU environments as well as ICU settings which specialised in particular areas of medicine like neurology and cardiology. Scott was also pursuing an interest in competing in triathlons, and had attended a few events, then a few other sporting events in his capacity as a practitioner of emergency medicine. By February 2022 he’d be working as a consultant in a conventional emergency medicine environment, but when a year-long opportunity to pursue a 12-month clinical fellowship with the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance arose, it was a role Scott couldn’t turn down. 48

“I didn’t have a huge amount of flying experience, but I’d taken a couple of flying lessons in an aeroplane before, and I had experienced a helicopter flight around the Forth Road bridge whilst back in Scotland. But the means of getting to a patient remains only one aspect of what makes this service unique.” “There’s no doubt that the helicopters has a number of advantages, not least among which is speed, smooth transit of patients and the ability to defy queues of traffic, or land in remote places like open fields,” says Scott. “But we’ve additional equipment, pharmacology, training and experience beyond roadbased paramedics, allowing us to provide extra support for our EMAS colleagues.” “All 999 calls received by the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) are monitored by a Air Desk staffed by a specially trained Dispatcher. The Dispatcher’s role is to identify the most serious incidents and dispatch our helicopter – Helimed 29, and doctor-paramedic team to the scene.” “We’re able to perform intubation, and other surgical procedures like performing open heart surgery at the roadside. We’ve additional painkillers and we can anaesthetise a patient at the scene.”

“We’ve an on-board ventilator and we have several units of blood and the ability to perform transfusions at the side of the road. In undertaking blood transfusions we carry red blood cells which helps oxygen delivery and plasma which helps the blood to clot. Carrying both components is really important because it mirrors what the hospital would give when the patient arrives.” Most recently, the service achieved CQC (Care Quality Commission) registration which allows it to determine its own procedures and processes and allow it to be selfdirecting (subject to inspections), rather than simply coming under the governance of EMAS, giving it much more flexibility in the way it can function in the future. 2021 was the service’s busiest year to date, and though the service has its most sophisticated equipment ever, the most up-to-date facilities, and a team more dedicated than ever to saving lives in the sky – as well as from its critical care cars – never should it be taken for granted that only because of dedicated fundraisers and volunteers can the service continue to be there for the entire population of Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire, 365 days a year. n

FUNDRAISING

How to help support our local air ambulance service...

n Donations: The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance does not receive any direct government or NHS funding and so without public donations, the service could not continue. You can donate by calling 01522 548469 or online at www.ambucopter.org.uk. n Play the Service’s Lottery: For just £1 you can play the service’s lottery with its weekly cash prizes of £1,000, £200 and £100, plus 4 x £50. n Volunteering & Fundraising: Whilst pilots and medics are frequently recognised in features like this one, there’s a small army of absolutely committed volunteers in the charity’s shops and those who raise money for the service through sponsored events and other activities. These often-unsung heroes are essential to the service. n Legacies, Trusts & Grants: There are plenty of other ways for individuals and companies to support the service... get in touch with the service’s Trusts & Foundations manager Rachael Baxter to find out more, or consider leaving the service a gift in your will. DINING OUT AT MAGPIES IN HORNCASTLE

A Restaurant with Rooms: Dining Out at

MAGPIES in HORNCASTLE This month we’re enjoying a small but perfectly formed dining room in the centre of Horncastle, family-owned and celebrating its 18th birthday... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

Caroline Gilbert isn’t sure where the name Magpies came from... she and husband Andrew took on the building exactly 18 years ago and inherited the name. The place was really well established in the town though, and the couple reasoned that any attempt to change the name would still result in it being referred to as ‘the place that used to be Magpies,’ and so decided to retain the name rather than fighting against it. That’s not to say they didn’t make other changes though. The place was a rather less auspicious restaurant prior to the couple’s arrival, and before that, it was a former village shop and bakehouse. The couple renovated the building, installed a new commercial kitchen and a lounge area, generally tidied the place up and most crucially of all, brought to the town a really good dining experience very much north of what you might find at even the best pub restaurant.

Sweet treats as part of afternoon tea £19.95, pre-booking required.

MEET THE CHEF

There’s a single dining room at Magpies, and the place has at most about 35 covers. Yet still in the kitchen there’s Andrew Gilbert and his fellow chef David Morley, which is a pretty decent ratio of chefs to diners, ensuring plenty of time and effort is invested in the restaurant’s dishes.

ANDREW GILBERT

A bugbear of mine is restaurants which have multiple menus, specials boards, and too many steak nights or early-bird promotions. Happily, Magpies has just one single menu, for both lunchtime and evening service.

possible to be when all of your dishes are prepared freshly in house, ensuring the kitchen is sufficiently well-practised in producing each dish.

The menu consists of seven starters, seven main courses and seven desserts plus a cheese board option. That’s still quite a bit of choice, but as extensive as we reckon it’s

What’s more, absolutely everything at Magpies is made in house by Andrew and David. The two bake the restaurant’s own bread in house each day, make their own ice

Born and raised in Buxton, Derbyshire, Andrew and Caroline met whilst working together at The Old Vicarage in Sheffield. The two took on Magpies exactly 18 years ago and have since run it as a fine dining ‘restaurant with rooms.’ n

“From bread and pre-dinner savoury to ice cream and sorbets, and even the petit fours served with coffee, everything is homemade...” creams and sorbets... even the petit fours served with customers’ coffee are made by the two chefs.

Direct Seafood’s, but where there’s quality and availability, the two love working with local ingredients.

Andrew and David also take full advantage of the wealth of local ingredients available in the county as well. Coningsby-based R H Papworth provides butchery, and greengrocer NHP of Woodhall Spa provides fruit and veg, grown in Lincolnshire where possible.

Meanwhile at front of house is Caroline, who’s invested in making sure each of her diners have a really great experience, and Caroline also welcomes guests into each of her three comfortable en suite rooms.

Andrew will acquiesce to suppliers further afield for products like speciality game supplier Vin Sullivan and Colchester-based

Andrew and Caroline reckon that their catchment area for diners is an hour, with customers visiting from Lincoln, Boston, Sleaford, Skegness, the East Coast, Louth, and Brigg & Caistor.

Magpies

Location: East Street, Horncastle. The Pitch: Small family run, award winning restaurant, having been awarded 2 AA rosettes for its English/Classical French cuisine. For a really special evening, Magpies also hosts its bi-annual wine dinners in May and October, where Ed or James from the couple’s preferred wine supplier, Corney & Barrow, introduce a series of wines sourced directly from smaller vineyards and wineries. There’s plans afoot, too, for a regular pudding club at the restaurant later this year.

Undoubtedly there’s a huge amount of expertise, creativity and good ingredients invested in each dish, and in creating a comfortable intimate environment in which to dine. The quality of dining on offer and cosy setting definitely makes a refreshing change from a pub restaurant. Magpies is a great place: small, perhaps, but perfectly formed! n

In the KITCHEN These chunky vegan burgers are great for summer barbecues, made with a mix of spicy Mexican quinoa, roast sweet potatoes and tender black beans...

QUINOA & SWEET POTATO VEGGIE BURGERS Preparation Time: 20 minutes. Cooking Time: 1 hour 15 minutes. Serves: 4. For the burgers • 2 large sweet potatoes, weighing at least 500g • 400g tin of black beans • 250g cooked spicy Mexican quinoa • 2 limes • 20 semi-dried tomatoes • 50g ground flaxseeds • To serve (optional) • Burger buns or pitta bread • Avocado or guacamole • Harissa chilli relish • Kimichi or pickles • Vegan mayo • Salad leaves • Chilli jam • Roasted peppers • Tomato ketchup or salsa Preheat your oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Place the sweet potatoes on a baking tray and slide into the oven to bake for 20-40 mins till they're soft and cooked through. A skewer should slide easily through the baked sweet potatoes. While the potatoes bake, drain and rinse the black beans, then tip half of them into a large bowl. Lightly crush them with a fork, then add the remaining beans. Tip in the ready-cooked spicy Mexican quinoa. Finely grate in the zest from the limes. Cut the semi-dried tomatoes in half and add those to the bowl. Mix everything together and set to one side. When the potatoes are cooked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly. Leave the oven on, if you’re cooking your burgers straight away. When cool enough to handle, halve the sweet potatoes and scoop out 300g of the soft flesh into a bowl. Add the ground flaxseeds with a good pinch of salt and pepper, then mash till smooth. Add the sweet potato mix to the bowl with the quinoa and beans. Mix well till combined. Taste and add more salt or pepper, if you think it needs it. Divide the mix into 6-8, then shape into patties about 2cm thick. You can use a large round biscuit cutter to help with shaping, if you like. Place them on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and brush one side with a little oil. Slide them into the oven to bake for 40 mins. Flip them over after 20 mins and brush the upturned side with a little more oil. Return them to the oven to cook for 15 mins. They should be darkened in colour and lightly crisp.Remove from the oven and build your burger with your chosen toppings. n Recipe: Abel & Cole, providing organic veg box deliveries from a carbon offset operation, see www.abelandcole.co.uk.

In the KITCHEN These perfect little pots are rich, creamy, intensely chocolatey and vegan friendly. They’re made with velvety smooth avocado, a splash of soya cream, dark chocolate and a dash of coffee...

CHOCOLATE, COFFEE & AVOCADO POTS Preparation Time: 20 minutes + chilling. Serves: 4. Vegan. • 100g dark chocolate • 100ml soya cream • 1 ripe avocado • 1 tsp instant coffee • 50g sugar • Berries, to serve Half-fill a medium pan with water, set it on the hob and let it come to a simmer. Tip the dark chocolate buttons and soya cream into a heatproof bowl – it should be the right size to sit over the top of the pan without touching the water. When the water is simmering, take the pan off the heat and sit the bowl on top. Stir the chocolate and cream together. The heat from the water will gently melt the chocolate as you stir. When the mixture is thick and smooth, take the bowl off the pan and set it aside to cool. Meanwhile, tip the instant coffee into a pestle and mortar and grind it into a powder. No pestle and mortar? You can tip the coffee into a sturdy bowl and use the bottom of a jam jar to crush it. Halve the avocado and discard the stone. Scoop the flesh out into a bowl and mash it smooth with a fork. If you have a food When the chocolate and cream mixture is cool, stir in the coffee, avocado, sugar, 1 tbsp olive oil and a pinch of salt. Mix well till smooth and fully incorporated. Divide the chocolate avocado mixture between small pots, ramekins or bowls and pop the in the fridge to chill for 3-4 hrs till set. Delicious served with fresh berries or drizzled with a little extra olive oil. n Recipe: Abel & Cole, providing organic veg box deliveries from a carbon offset operation, see www.abelandcole.co.uk.

HOMES & INTERIORS

A Designer Barn This month sees one of Market Rasen’s most well-presented properties coming onto the market in the form of The Byre. It dates back 100 years but has enjoyed a superb renovation by its current owner who is, unsurprisingly, an interior designer... Words: Rob Davis Images: Sophie Marshall.

PROPERTY

THE DETAILS

The Byre, Ownby, Market Rasen Location: Market Rasen 14 mins, Louth 36 mins, Lincoln 24 mins. Provenance: Three storey barn conversion blending industrial style with luxurious living and sublime yet versatile style. Rooms: Four receptions currently arranged as summer sitting room, winter sitting room, dining room, living kitchen. Four beds each with en suite. Guide Price: £1,150,000.

LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING... but being attractive certainly doesn’t hurt, whether you’re considering your next property, furnishing your home or when you’re gainfully employed as a model! Glenn Goodwin was raised in Leeds, Harrogate & Boroughbridge, but moved to Lincolnshire 14 years ago. The serial house renovator has lost count of just how many properties he and partner Richard Cartwright have transformed, but they reckon it’s 12 or 13... if it’s the latter, then The Byre in Ownby by Spital has not proved unlucky. And the next owners will certainly consider themselves to have fallen on their feet, moving into a barn conversion that’s spacious, well-maintained and impressive in its design. “The building is over 200 years old, and was within the curtilage of the Manor House,” says Glenn. “The hay barn and byre – which is an Old English term for a cowshed – were part of the same building and were located adjacent to the stables. Upon the sale of the Manor House about 30 years ago, the family moved into some of the barns and others on the estate were offered for sale.”

Glenn and Richard purchased the house in 2018 and began renovating it. Glenn is a former model who worked with the Louise Morton model agency. Louise founded the agency as a charm school and later launched the careers of hundreds of models from 1955 right into the 21st century and many of them – including Glenn – found themselves on the runways for the biggest names in couture fashion. Glenn later worked in the fashion industry and made a segue into visual merchandising then window dressing and finally into interior design for commercial clients like hotels and for domestic clients too. And so, his vision for The Byre was clear; to create a comfortable and practical home whilst preserving the industrial heritage of the building in the process.

During the course of the property’s renovation, the roof, wiring, plumbing and boiler were all replaced, meaning all of the essential services are in great condition despite the building being 200 years old. The kitchen was redesigned too. Glenn worked with Chris Strange of Scunthorpe, and describes the company’s Andy Gough as ‘brilliant.’ The Silestone work surfaces and Cosentine cabinetry is paired with appliances from premium brands like Samsung and Fisher & Paykel, the latter brand contributing the two whopping great fridges, and wine cooler. There’s a boiling water tap too, an induction hob and separate utility. The kitchen leads into a dining room with natural light on three aspects, and there’s a summer sitting room and a winter sitting room with, respectively, doors leading onto the terrace, hot tub, and wood burner. >> 71

Lincs Pride JULY 240.qxp 31/05/2022 14:45 Page 72

PROPERTY

>> As an interior designer, Glenn has worked with Lees Furnishers of Grimsby and has sourced a number of bespoke or design-led furnishings from the retailer, and from names like lighting studio Design Orchard. Elsewhere there are Farrow & Ball colours and more generally, very well-considered use of light, scale and space, especially in the four bedrooms, each of which has its own en suite. The thoughtful design continues outdoors too. Originally the property’s grounds were laid to lawn, but Glenn introduced organic shapes in place of straight lines, and has used indigenous planting, as well as the odd statement plant like bamboo. There’s also a large and impressive palm tree to the front of the property, and terraces around the house, each of which enjoys total privacy thanks to the house’s perimeter walls and gates, which also provide security for children and pets. However, despite how successful the results of their labours, Glenn and Richard remain serial renovators. And so, no sooner is the paint dry on the wall, then the desire to be surrounded by bare brick and chaos kicks in again. The two are already considering their next project, and have put the property onto the market with Market Rasen’s Mundys. Its next owners will inherit an impressive, well-designed and very practical property indeed. n 72

LAVISH BATHROOMS OF LOUTH

A New Home for

LAVISH BATHROOMS Five years on from creating Louth’s most design-led bathroom studio, Lavish Bathrooms is expanding into brand new premises to provide new inspiration, new ranges and an even better customer experience... Words: Rob Davis.

80

Lincs Pride JULY 240.qxp 31/05/2022 14:46 Page 81

DESIGN is art with a purpose, and the most successful examples fuse practicality and functionality with a great look and feel. Take your bathroom fittings, for example...

The new premises will officially open with a VIP event on 17th and 18th June, and so during our visit, the team were getting the new 4,000sq ft showroom ready.

You only get one chance to plan and install your new bathroom correctly, so making sure it’s done right first time is imperative to ensure you’re happy with your investment and you end up with a room that looks good for years.

“Only an independent, family-run, local company can give you the time and attention you deserve when you’re planning to replace your bathroom,” says Nicola.

Happily, since 2017, both Simon and Nicola Dixey-Chambers have worked hard to establish Louth’s Lavish Bathrooms as the county’s leading supplier and installer of design-led bathrooms, en suites and cloakrooms. Having traded for five years, the team is now moving to much larger premises on the town’s Fairfield Industrial Estate to provide much more space to show off a large range of products, and to provide new products and ranges from brands like Utopia and Laufen.

“There’s nowhere to hide when you’re installing a bathroom. Any cheap, or poorquality fittings or a rushed installation will soon ruin any hopes you had of creating a great looking room. Instead, by investing in customer care and making sure we do the job right, first time, we’ve been able to grow the company organically and ensure hundreds of satisfied customers over the years.” “This approach also means a much better experience for the customer as they enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing the whole installation and the coordinating of every tradesperson from installers to

plumbers to electricians and flooring & tiling experts is managed for them.” “That means our customers are free to concentrate on the enjoyable bit; choosing their new suite and accessories from our range of design-led brands like Lauren, Dansani, Utopia Heritage, Burlington and Roman.” “Because we concentrate on supplying and installing bathrooms specifically, we’ve become really good at what we do, and our new showroom will allow us to give each customer the time and attention they deserve to improve the experience even more.” “As part of our design service we use Oculus 4D technology to provide a ‘virtual reality’ tour around your new bathroom. It’s an example of how we strive to provide the best service, the best products and the most design-led products to ensure you end up with a bathroom, en suite or cloakroom that functions brilliant, but also looks absolutely fantastic, year after year!” n

n For a free, no obligation discussion about your project with no pressure-selling guaranteed, visit Lavish Bathrooms, established since 2017 on Fairfield Industrial Estate, Louth, LN11 0GP. Appointments are preferred to give you the time and attention you deserve. Open 9.30am-4.30pm, call 01507 201161 or 07812 632628, or see lavishbathrooms.co.uk for more design inspiration. 81

IF YOU WERE TO ASK a newly-engaged bride-to-be to plan her wedding in its entirety or if you sat down in a restaurant and were presented with every one of the dishes of a chef ’s eight course taster menu, all at once, you’d probably feel a little overwhelmed.

the job, right down to the tiniest but most stylish detail. And that’s with just a single, accountable point of contact for the whole job, with experience in project management, budgeting, problem solving, with all tradespeople employed in-house.

Likewise, if we asked you to redesign your home in one go, you probably wouldn’t know where to start. A big task is always easier if you break it down into smaller pieces, and as anyone who has renovated or built their own home is acutely aware, it’s a huge job to project manage to say the least.

“It’s extraordinary to think, but when I established the business in 1994, if you wanted a kitchen or bathroom, as a client you had to liase with builders’ yards and your tradespeople. Any problems that arose along the way were yours to solve and of course, you had the whole burden of creating decisions, budgeting, and planning to address, all on your own,” says Richard Sutton.

Happily, help is on hand in the form of Richard Sutton Interiors, a 17-strong team of experts who can provide all the help you need to complete building work, plumbing and wiring, create new kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, tiling, decorating and styling your property... from the biggest, scariest part of

“I thought there was a better way. I set up the business on the basis of giving people good advice at every stage, breaking down a big job into step-by-step decisions and giving clients a good experience, not tonnes of stress.” >>

Above: One of Richard Sutton’s most recent projects is this house for a client near Louth. In just a little over three months the property was reconfigured and a new kitchen installed, as well as six bathrooms, and a full redesign of each reception rooms. A single point of contact at the company, made things much easier for the client!

RICHARD SUTTON INTERIORS

“Richard Sutton Interiors can help with a single room, or a whole house, with cabinet makers, installers and designers all in house...” >> “A good example is the property we’ve pictured here. It’s based in Lincolnshire and the property was first constructed in the 1980s, so not an especially old building, but one which the owners wanted to update and reconfigure to better suit their needs.” “I guess a typical year sees us complete a really major project every couple of months, about six a year, but in between those we also have many more smaller projects like individual rooms. We’ve also become favoured for much larger projects – typically whole houses, either renovations of old properties or designing the interiors of brand new ones – as we can manage the whole job from start to finish and because our budgeting is always accurate to within a very narrow margin.” “We began our working life specialising in bathrooms and then gained commissions on the back of those for kitchens, studies and for built-in furniture in bedrooms and reception rooms. Bathrooms are arguably quite tricky rooms to create, so specialising in them right from the start probably stood us in good stead!” “Along the way we styled our studio to looks as much like a home as possible, not like a showroom. We soon gained a really great reputation for the look and the feel of our studio and we were quite lucky, as we had about 5,000sq ft of space to utilise.” “Eventually our clients wanted to achieve the same look for their own rooms and so we soon started to provide furniture, lighting, accessories and finishing touches to turn a client’s house into a home.” “It took us just a little over three months to finish this property, including building work to reconfigure rooms, new kitchens, six new bathrooms and new reception rooms.” “Because we employ our own tradespeople from cabinet makers to installers to tilers and decorators, we’ve all the skills in house, and we’re better able to coordinate everyone to ensure each part of the job is completed in the right order with absolutely nothing overlooked.”

Above/Right: As part of the property’s refurbishment Richard Sutton’s cabinet makers created this new bespoke kitchen using solid timber.

88

“For the client, that means they’re invested in the project and can make their own decisions, they’re in control, but steered through the process to make it less daunting and less stressful. Being able to make choices gradually means not being rushed into making hasty decisions, and of course, we’ve all of the contacts, experience and knowledge of the best brands to ensure we can make suggestions and recommendations.” “So with the skills, the enthusiasm and the desire to make our clients really proud of their homes, the people we work with say it’s created a better way to work, one that makes life much easier for them.” n

THE PLANT LOVER’S GARDEN

This month we’re enjoying an NGS garden near Bourne which is open by appointment only, and which illustrates beautifully why the charity deserves ongoing support from the area’s keen gardeners...

The Plant Lover’s

GARDEN

YOUR GARDEN can fulfil many purposes, from serving as a place to enjoy growing, or a way of attracting birdlife and nature, to providing a space to grow your own food, or becoming an essential haven to escape noise and hassle, trading it in for sunshine and tranquility.

For this month’s garden owner, though, this plot near Bourne serves as a place to enjoy fresh air and find respite, especially when she’s unable to venture too far from home. The garden also serves to prove why raising money for the NGS is a win-win scenario, allowing gardeners to show off their pride and joy, allowing others to take inspiration and to exchange plants and ideas, providing a great day out for visitors, but also allowing charities to benefit in the process. One such charity is Parkinsons UK, which has been supporting the NGS for 10 years. And 10 years ago, our homeowner received her own Parkinsons diagnosis, at first unfamiliar with the condition but now acutely aware of how important it is to support the organisation, and by extension, the NGS.

At the time the couple lived in a period town house and enjoyed curating their plot, but the steps down to the basement garden and the stairs both up to the front door and over the three storeys soon proved inconvenient. And so, the couple moved to their current garden in 2014, a new home near Bourne with a plot completely laid to lawn. It was a chance to create a garden that was a reflection of their own style and their own ideas but also to ensure that it was suitably safe and accessible to accommodate as much time and energy as our homeowner has to devote to it, whilst being able to rest when necessary. >>

THE PLANT LOVER’S GARDEN

>> It’s also worth remembering that the condition Parkinsons can result in tiredness and can impair balance, which can limit the amount of time somebody with the condition can go out, and so a nicely curated garden can create a safe environment in which to enjoy some fresh air. And so it was with a practical approach that the couple considered the creation of their garden. It’s a square plot, flat and southfacing, but with quite a bit of aggregate buried not too far below the top soil. “We’re really not into making life difficult,” says the couple. “We’ve tried to work with the geography of the garden and with the soil we have, and factors like an area being in full sun or shade.” “There’s no point whatsoever fighting against conditions, so if a border is more shaded, we make sure we plant whatever will work in that area.” “Likewise, we’ve chosen quite tight planting schemes to prevent having to spent much time weeding... there’s practically none of that, just a bit of dead-heading in late spring.” “When landscaping the area we’ve tried to make paths all around to ensure that the surface is as level as possible, and we’ve installed raised beds everywhere, elevating the entire level of the garden, which is nicer aesthetically, but also makes it easier to work on for someone with limited mobility.” “Much of our planting is in pots too, which makes it easier to move them around to reconfigure the garden and accommodate more plants. It ensures you can move them to plant them up, clean around them and in the case of some plants which are especially fastgrowing, it keeps them contained and stops them taking over a border.”

“Much of our planting is in pots, which makes it easier to move them around to reconfigure the garden and accommodate more plants...” 96

There are a number of places to sit and enjoy the garden too, each strategically placed to take in a particular view, but also to provide somewhere to sit and rest whilst working in the garden. The main terrace area has a wind-down canopy providing shade from some pretty potent mid-afternoon sun during our visit, and there’s a dining terrace too, as well as a seat built into the raised beds under a rose arch, not to mention the semi-circular bench

IN THE GARDEN IN JULY...

Jobs to complete and a guide to planting in the summer months n Keep in the water: Water borders and lawns throughout the summer. It’s best to water at dusk to prevent evaporation and scorching as water droplets will act as a magnifying glass for the sun’s rays. Good quality mulch will help to retain moisture too. n Taking cuttings: Start taking cuttings of tender perennials such as salvias, pelargoniums and penstemons. Plant the last of the half-hardy annuals in their place – cosmos, nicotianas, zinnias and cleomes – for flowers into the middle of autumn. n The flower garden: In your floral borders, deadhead roses, sweet peas and bedding plants. Cut back perennial plants, geraniums, delphiniums etc., and prune wisteria and lupins. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and treat early. n Planting and sowing: Sow biennials, such as foxgloves, honesty, forget-me-nots and wallflowers, for blooms next year. Sow autumn-flowering bulbs like gladiolus, nerines, cyclamen and begonias. Also at this time sowings of biennials such as foxglove, sweet william, canterbury bells and forget-me-nots can be made for planting out in autumn. n The kitchen garden: Water fruit trees, bushes and tomatoes, sow the last crop of peas and beans for an autumn crop. n The lawn: Look after the lawn with fertiliser, cut regularly and often. Keep grass well watered and if your lawn is looking ‘stressed’ raise the mower to avoid dragging the blades. Investing in a new set of blades or having your existing ones sharpened will help. n Other jobs: Cut lavender for drying. Damp down the greenhouse floor each morning on hot days to increase humidity. Take large-leaved houseplants into the garden and hose them down to clean off dust. Top up bird baths, ponds and water features during hot weather.

THE PLANT LOVER’S GARDEN

Changing Lives:

The NGS around the couple’s mature tree and extending from the house with trellis and clematis. “We opened the garden to the NGS last year, and it was our first time doing so, not to mention it was when lockdown rules were in place, so we really weren’t sure what to expect,” the couple says. “Both of us prefer to open the garden by arrangement only so we can avoid too many people being here at once and spend more meaningful time with visitors.” “We’ve been visited by some really nice groups, gardening clubs and U3A groups. All of our visitors have been lovely and we’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how many people are willing to share knowledge, exchange plants and ideas... just generally be a community. When we opened though, the NGS needed a name for the garden.” “That was a tricky one for us really, and we weren’t really sure what to say. In the end we decided to call ourselves the Plant Lover’s Garden, as we really will only plant what we enjoy looking at and what we’re sure will work well in the garden.”

The NGS raised £3m for good causes in 2021, including £525,000 for Marie Curie, £500,000 for Macmillan and £212,000 for Parkinsons UK.

“The raised bed was first, and though we expected it to take about three tonnes of soil, it actually ended up swallowing no fewer than 22 tonnes. Normally we like to plant in odd numbers and there was a slight disagreement as to whether our Silver Birch Snow Queens should number five (too few!) or seven (too many!) so in the end we deviated from our own rule and planted six. Alongside these are Hydrangea Annabelle and Agapanthus.” “There are a lot of Hostas too and we’re even trialling a new variety of slug-proof and snail-proof which so far has proved quite successful!” “We’re also quite thrifty gardeners and so the obelisks and the pergola with its trellis are all home-made, using very cheap roofing batons. Growing up these are Clematis Margaret Hunt, Innocent Blush, Niobe and Beautiful Bride as well as Wisteria. By the house are pots of Sweet Colossus strawberries which are absolutely enormous, and very sweet during the summer. I’m always diligent about naming the varieties I

plant. I use black tags which are less visible, and white marker for the writing, tied with gardener’ twine. We’ve plenty of pots all around and again, I print my own labels for them so I can always identify each one. I like to have lots of flowers to pick and take into the house; Gladioli, Dahlia, Lilies.” “We’ve tried to make life as easy as possible, and really the hardest jobs are mowing the lawns – which all have edging stones to make achieving neat edges much easier – and a twice-yearly cutting of the hedges. “Otherwise we think we do a good job of making the garden as enjoyable and as attractive as possible, minimising cost and waste and ensuring something of interest all year round.” The Plant Lover’s Garden is one of the nicest spaces we’ve enjoyed sitting in for a long while. In the distance, school children can be heard enjoying the sunshine, but when the bell rings and they return to lessons, it’s a tranquil space that proves just how lifeenhancing a really good garden can be. n

MAKING TILES AND POTTERY AT THE OLD TILE WORKS

Keeping Heritage Alive at the

OLD TILE WORKS For 182 years the William Blyth tile works at Far Ings has produced handmade roof tiles and is now home to the recently opened Humber Bridge Garden Centre, the well-established Old Tile Works Restaurant, and an Artisan village... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

THE OLD TILE WORKS

>> POOR OLD MISSY! The yard cat arrived at William Blyth, The Old Tile Works in Barton upon Humber, about four years ago. During our visit she was enjoying a snooze adjacent to the 100-year old coal-fired kiln which gently bakes the works’ hand-made clay tiles over the course of a few weeks. That’s until the team arrives, and proceeds to ‘break the wicket…’ at which point her sleep is disturbed and she has to find a new place to doze for a few days in between her work, keeping the site rodent-free. It’s something that happens about 45 times a year, but we still felt bad for her. There’s a convenient quid-pro-quo in the team appreciating a lack of massive scary Humberside rats as they work, and Missy (who in her previous life was a stray) enjoying a good square meal a couple of times a day, plus her space by the nice warm kiln. Since 1840, William Blyth has been extracting local Alluvial clay from the land adjacent to the banks of the Humber estuary. The business uses the clay, which is extracted then stockpiled and processed at its sister site to hand make traditional clay roof tiles and fittings. Between the two sites, the company produces 1,500,000 tiles each year; mostly their Traditional Lincolnshire Pantile which is popular not just in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire but also throughout East Anglia and Southeast England. Between two and six weeks later, depending on the time of year and moisture in the air, the pug is pulled away and they team literally breaks into the kiln – the doorway to which, when plastered up, is referred to as the wicket – to retrieve the now beautifully baked heritage tiles. Adjacent to the site, too, Gabriel Nichols works in The Old Tile Works’ pottery to create one-off tiles – bespoke in size and shape for heritage purposes or for ridge tiles, verge tiles and so on – as well as terracotta pots for the garden, hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel. It’s to his studio that Missy relocates. Her temporary sleeping area is in a cardboard box next to Gabriel’s wood burner, where she’ll remain (in-between mousing duties) until the next lot of tiles are stacked in the kiln, the fires are lit, and the space 102

adjacent to the wicket is once again nice and cosy. William Blyth’s two granddaughters owned the site until 2005 when it was purchased by Harry Harrison and his family. Harry and his father had provenance in the area as arable farmers-turned specialists in earth-moving, so they understood the industry well. The Old Tile Works vacated the adjacent clay pits which is now Far Ings Nature Reserve, and now has two sites; Far Ings (on the western side of the Bridge) is the 19-acre works where Gabriel’s studio is. It’s also the site of a brand new garden centre, too (see over). About 400 yards away, on the eastern side of the Humber Bridge, is Hoe Hill which covers about 21-acres and that’s where the clay is dug up and processed for production on both sites. >>

THE OLD TILE WORKS

>> At Hoe Hill, the team brings to the surface each year about 6,000 tonnes of beautiful alluvial Barton clay, which is placed into the ‘pie’ (a huge pile), where it’s blended with a bulldozer – akin to kneading bread dough – before being formed into square dowels about a cubic foot in size. There are four colour variations from natural terracotta to black smut, with a further six additional profile of tiles and 20 different associated fittings. Heritage specialists and planners in conservation areas, quite often insist properties are re-roofed using William Blyth tiles due to their unique weathering properties. A bespoke service is also offered to commission unique tiles to match a particular specification, or with original tiles that are no longer made by previous manufacturers. The clay then awaits the mill. It is processed into manageable size dowels around a cubic foot in size ready for the makers. The clay dowels are extruded to shape where they are then hand cut to size, trimmed, nailholed and carefully placed on drying racks where they are then left to naturally dry from anywhere from two to six weeks.

Back in the early 1900s, William Blyth was It is important to carefully regulate the heat to prevent cracking – the kiln reaches temperatures of between 100°c to 1,000°c at their hottest. Once the heat reaches 1,000°c the tiles are held (soaked) at this top temperature to make sure they adhere to strict performance and durability standards. Once the kiln has been allowed to cool naturally, the pug is pulled away and the wicket is carefully broken – a traditional term used for the entrance – to hand remove the beautiful handmade tiles. Today it is the only surviving traditional handmade pantile manufacturer in the UK that is also firing its kilns solely by coal. As Harry points out, the amount of coal the site uses is negligible in terms of its output, as the kilns retain a great deal of heat. When the reserves of clay are exhausted at a particular site, restoration invariably takes place to convert the area and encourage wildlife to populate as a nature reserve – Far

Ings Nature Reserve (an SSSI) is a protected conservation area and was once a former clay pit created by one of the many Barton tile and brick works. Meanwhile Gabriel spends half of his time creating specialist tiles by hand, and half of his time on traditional terracotta garden pots, sold in the adjacent Humber Bridge Garden Centre. A small pot takes about 30 seconds, one of the larger 32” pots is shaped in about six minutes. A new garden centre on the site means there’s now an exclusive retail outlet for Gabriel’s work, as well as an artisan village to explore. There’s lots to enjoy on site for humans – and la dolce vita for felines, too – but one of the nicest aspects about the site is that for many years to come, The Old Tile Works will be keeping a traditional craft alive and ensuring the site at Barton remains the UK’s only remaining site hand-making traditional clay pantiles. n

A WALK WITH

PRIDE

A RAMBLE AROUND GEDNEY DROVE END A fine, level walk with distant views over The Wash and across the River Nene with Norfolk not far away. Plenty of bird life, also the RAF at play, so take binoculars and pick a day with good weather and visibility! Words: Lincolnshire Ramblers, www.ramblers.org.uk/lincolnshire.

Distance: 8 miles / 13 km. Route: See map overleaf. How to Get There: PE12 9PN (approx); OS grid reference TF460294. More Information: www.lincolnshireramblers.org.uk.

From Gedney Drove End’s Village Hall car park, turn left along the road and in a few yards take the signed path left, alongside a bungalow.

!

The path leads you to the Old Sea Bank and once on it, turn left, continuing to a junction where you go right, heading out towards the coast, eventually passing a barrier and crossing a road before climbing the (new) sea bank (A). Out ahead is The Wash and RAF Holbeach Air Weapons Range, with observation posts left and right (the marsh was once one of the busiest aircraft bombing ranges in the country). Our route is right, and while walking, look a little to the left, to see a man-made island, with the coastline of Norfolk stretching away on the horizon.

The town of Hunstanton can be seen away to the left on a good day. This circular artificial island is called the Outer Trial Bank. It is one of two islands constructed during the 1970s for a governmental water resources scheme (the other, smaller one lies further east and closer to the Norfolk coast). The plan was to see whether freshwater from the Rivers Witham, Welland, Nene and Great Ouse could be captured using a tidal barrier, then stored in offshore reservoirs. However, building these test lakes on a tidal estuary meant the fresh water soon became saline and with the trial costing over £3m, the plans were soon shelved and the trial banks abandoned in 1976.

plaintiff cry of the curlew and the more urgent warning whistling of the redshank. Inland, look for tinkling flocks of goldfinch and linnet. Eventually, the sea bank turns right as the River Nene is reached. Continue, with twin ‘lighthouses’ ahead on either bank. Pass a footpath right, then notice the small wood beyond (C) planted to provide cover for birds. Cross a waterway – Lutton Leam – one of many that drain the fens, and continue, passing another path turning, to approach the greatly extended lighthouse. Go through a kissing gate and follow the narrow path to reach a road.

They have now gained a new importance as a breeding bird colony, with around three thousand pairs of sea birds now nesting on the outer bank.

The River Nene rises in Northamptonshire and was widened and straightened near its mouth in 1827 to facilitate shipping to the ports of Sutton Bridge and Wisbech. The lighthouses, designed by John Rennie the architect of Waterloo Bridge, were built in 1831 to commemorate the opening of the Nene outfall cut.

Continue on, passing a footpath right that leads directly back to the village. Ignore two further paths right, to reach a third path joining from the right (B). The silence of the walk is often punctuated by the

They never functioned as lighthouses, but were merely markers to guide ships into the cut. In the 1930s, the East Lighthouse was inhabited by the naturalist and artist Sir Peter Scott. >> 109

WALK WITH PRIDE

>> The one on the west bank that you have just passed was restored in 1986 and is Grade II listed. Turn right and walk with care along the tarmac. On the corner of the first righthand bend a chapel stood for around 70 years (D). Called St Philip’s Mission Church, it was built in 1869 as a Chapel of Ease for the labourers working on the construction of the New Cut of the river Nene. The building was demolished sometime around 1940 having been derelict for many years. The road walking continues for just under a mile, to a point where the road bends sharp left. Here, go ahead on a track, which narrows to a path before widening again to reach a road (E). Turn right and walk to a T-junction where you take the footpath ahead, walking on this old sea bank for about a mile, before reaching a lane (F). Turn left, walk to the road junction and turn right. Heading back to your transport now, you pass the ‘Rising Sun,’ formerly the ‘Black Bull’. If ignoring the hostelry, walk ahead to the car park on your right. The name Gedney Drove End clearly illustrates the purpose of the road you drove along to reach the village.

A century later, a thriving community was established at the end of the drove road, boasting four pubs, a chapel, corn mill, blacksmith and a coastguard station. n Self-guided walks from the Lincolnshire Ramblers can be found at www.lincolnshireramblers.org.uk.

MOTORS

The Retro 911 This summer Porsche is returning to the 1970s with the second of four limited edition 911 Sport Classic models which will reinterpret the 911 from different decades of the 20th century

THIS SUMMER Porsche is going back to the future. The sports car manufacturer is in the process of releasing four special editions of its 911, designed to evoke memories of the same model through different decades, from 1964, when it was first launched, to the present day. Already the firm has released a 2009 model with a Targa roof and styling inspired by the 1960s. And this month, it has revealed its second edition out of the four retro vehicles, inspired by 1972’s Carerra RS 2.7. So... a standard 911 with a retro paint job? Right? Well not quite. The ‘ducktail’ spoiler is inspired by the classic model, as are the 1970s-style Fuchs wheels. And yes, there is the matter of the Sport Grey Metallic paint specific to the Sport Classic, a brand new 112

paint colour, as well as the twin-stripes on the bonnet and ‘60’ livery to the sides. However, the Sport Classic is mechanically unique in the sense that its 3.7-litre flat six engine with its twin-turbos is usually mated to an automatic gearbox in the conventional 911 Turbo. Here, though, it’s channeled via a seven-speed manual gearbox, making this car the most powerful ever manual 911. An ‘auto-blip’ feature on the gearbox allows for smoother shifts with a brief burst of revs

when shifting down, and the sports exhaust has been fettled to create a more ‘emotive’ soundtrack to your driving. Elsewhere, there’s Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), with ride height lowered by 10mm, and rear wheel drive. Inside, the Sport Classic has a very 1970s looking Pepita ‘houndstooth’ cloth with leather elsewhere in the cabin in black and cognac. Sadly, the only thing that doesn’t recall the 1970s is the Sport Classic’s eye-watering £209,540 price tag. With a conventional 911 starting at less than £88,000 and even a Turbo or Convertible version between £100,000 and £150,000, that’s one hell of a premium. But with only 1,250 examples set to be made, the Sport Classic will at least hold its value, or appreciate in price. n

Fundraising in Spalding for the area’s

Children & Young People A F UNDRAISING EVENING in Spalding for the Children & Young Persons’ Assessment Unit was held recently, organised by Hayley Warner, Kim Howlett, Laura Hill and Sandy Crook. “The event was held to raise money for parent sleeper beds at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston,” says Hayley. “These are sofa armchairs that can be pulled out into beds so a parent or career unfortunate enough to have an overnight stay with us has somewhere comfortable and close to their child to sleep.” Over 400 people attended the event at Springfields, with raffle prizes and sponsorship from local businesses and entertainment from Spalding School of Dance, live music from The Walk and support from SN Events, organisers are awaiting confirmation of the final figure raised. n Words & Images: Rob Davis.

DENTAL HEALTH CENTRE

Why the Dental Health team is

SMILING It’s normally The Dental Health Centre’s clients who are left smiling... but on this occasion, it’s the team themselves who are grinning from ear to ear. That’s because Practice Manager Paul Parkes and her team have been nominated for two prestigious industry awards... “Paula has grown the practice financially, managed and retained the clinicians and staff in a wonderful manner, developed innovative strategies to grow the practice, and always has patient care as her top priority.”

NOTHING CAN EXPRESS confidence like a smile, and there’s no better reason to smile than when celebrating success. This summer, Grantham’s Dental Health Centre is awaiting the results of not just one but two awards for which they’ve been nominated.

“Paula continues to provide focus and dedication in delivering an outstanding patient journey. She truly embodies all of the Dentex values we believe in.”

This accolade is not at all surprising considering the practice’s well-established history – almost 30 years in the making – not to mention consistently glowing reviews from loyal clients over the years.

Satisfied Clients

Patient Care Award

There are currently over 3,000 partner clinics – including Grantham’s Dental Health Centre – working with Chrysalis Finance, the financial partner which helps to provide competitive finance for clients of the practice (and others like it across the UK) who want to spread the cost of their treatment with bespoke payment solutions. Each year, Chrysalis seeks to recognise those practices which prioritise and embody its core values. These include quality of care, trust, expertise and professionalism. Just 14 out of the company’s 3,000 allied practices were recognised in this year’s Patient Care Award, of which The Dental Health Centre was one. Practice Manager of the Year

In addition, the centre’s Practice Manager and Treatment Coordinator, Paula Parkes, had been recognised in her part in ensuring

all patients receive a full consultation prior to commencing treatment. This key safeguarding measure ensures all clients are wellinformed and importantly well looked after throughout the process. The Practice Manager of the Year Award is held by Dentex, a dental partner for independent practices and has over 70 specialists providing support and expertise, to ensure companies like The Dental Health Centre can operate independently, caring for their patients whilst simultaneously accessing to the latest training, advice, and support. “Paula demonstrates great ethical work principals and lives the Dentex values in her professional relationships with her team and patients,” a spokesperson for Dentex said.

“It’s really great to be recognised within the industry and to have the whole ethos of the Dental Health Centre acknowledged,” says Paula. “But we’re also really proud to receive lots of really good feedback from our lovely clients too.” “Dentistry has changed a huge amount over the nearly 30 years since Colin Sutton established the practice, and to hear about the difference we make to our patients’ lives is really rewarding.” “We always try to go the extra mile to ensure our patients receive first class care and the latest treatments in a relaxed environment.” “Knowing that a smile is about confidence just as much as appearance, we’re able to provide a range of treatments like implants, single-visit crowns, veneers, tooth-whitening, and general dentistry because we believe that a happy, confident smile should be available to everyone... it’s a right, not a privilege!” n
