Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation A next-gen laser technology project promises to bring Australia up to speed with other developed countries. The Australian manufacturing and defence sectors are set to reap benefits of strides being made locally in highpowered laser technology advancement after a new federal government contract was announced. The University of South Australia (UniSA) has been awarded a $1.8 million funding to help build sovereign manufacturing capability with the help of next-generation laser technology. High-powered lasers are the preferred tools for the manufacturing sector as they can cut, shape and weld most industrial materials with high precision. Their ability to manipulate and transform materials makes them ideal for the automotive, computer and clothing industries as they can create extremely fine features that are near impossible to make using traditional machining equipment. UniSA Professor of Laser Engineering, David Lancaster, will lead the threeyear project, funded by the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), in collaboration with the University of Adelaide. Professor Lancaster, who heads one of the country’s leading laser and photonics manufacturing research laboratories at

UniSA, will bring Australia up to speed with other developed nations. Highpowered lasers are increasingly being used in defence and manufacturing however the tech is relatively immature in Australia compared to other countries despite a long history of development here. Australia has had to purchase this tech from other countries and that has been restrictive as most nations limit their laser exports. Over the next three years, the Professor aims to build a new type of high-powered laser that combines multiple smaller lasers, fine tuning the manufacturing process so it is cheaper and more efficient. These miniature lasers would cost hundreds of dollars each as opposed to the millions a larger one would be worth. UniSA’s Laser Physics and Photonics Devices Lab will manufacture the lasers and the University of Adelaide’s Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensors will develop the specialist laser glass. Australia’s universities and defence sector, according to Professor Lancaster, need to be more closely integrated to build sovereign independence in laser technology.

WEIGHS LESS, WAY LESS. The Vector 1550 unit from Carrier is one of the lightest trailer refrigeration units on the market (712 kg) and operates with low noise emissions (71 dB). And while Vector 1550 units weigh less, they also offer way more. Designed using the patented combination of a hermetic compressor with an economizer, it delivers a 40 percent increase in refrigeration capacity during pull down. As a result, Vector 1550 units deliver faster temperature pull down, reaching the desired set point up to 25 percent faster compared to conventional technology and with extremely precise temperature control (+/- 0.8°C). As if that’s not enough, the Vector 1550 unit’s low fuel consumption reduces its overall carbon impact by up to 19 percent compared to conventional systems, the equivalent of removing 2.8 tons of CO2 per unit per year.

with the loading bars simply pulled down from their stowed position adjacent to the ceiling. This minimises workplace health and safety issues associated with less advanced systems that require time consuming manual handling to install the loading bars. The vans are equipped with Carrier fridge units which feature the latest E Solution Telematics. JBS has full monitoring visibility and history of the load via computer and mobile phone at all times. The telematics provide live internal van temperature, current outside ambient temperature and fridge unit performance enroute. After temperatures are set, any variations outside of the allowable parameters trigger an alert that’s sent to the relevant personnel. This allows total management of food products whilst in transit from factory to receiver. Running gear including air suspension, brakes and axles are German manufactured BPW, covered by a one-million kilometre warranty. This tried and proven running gear ensures maximum longevity under Australian conditions. To further address the need for safety, each of the trailers is fitted with side underrun intrusion bars, a fire extinguisher and electronic braking system (EBS). The EBS detects what’s going on with each wheel set. It prevents brake locking and roll over by automatically applying the brakes to particular wheels. Data can be extracted from the system to

The trailers are finished with various elements of polished stainless, meaning they look as good as they perform. Capral and Rio Tinto: Integrated Australian supply chain supporting Aussie transport IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE ONGOING COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS BEEN CAUSING GLOBAL SHIPPING DELAYS AFFECTING AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES IN MORE WAYS THAN THOUGHT POSSIBLE. AT A TIME LIKE THIS THE IMPORTANCE OF AN AUSTRALIAN SUPPLY CHAIN REALLY COMES TO THE SURFACE. AUSTRALIA’S LEADING MANUFACTURER AND DISTRIBUTOR OF ALUMINIUM PRODUCTS, CAPRAL, UNDERSTANDS WHAT IT MEANS FOR LOCAL MANUFACTURING AND THE BUSINESSES THAT DEPEND ON IT. “Rio Tinto is proud of our partnership with Capral Aluminium and the role we play in supporting a wholly-domestic supply chain from production to end-product,” Rio Tinto’s Aluminium Sales & Marketing Vice President, Tolga Egrilmezer, says. “Though we operate a global aluminium portfolio, Australia is the only market internationally where the whole value chain from bauxite and alumina to aluminium billets and extrusions are truly made in Australia. Green is good LUCIDITY’S TEBS STATUS LAMP KIT TAKES THE GUESSWORK OUT OF ASCERTAINING THAT SUCH SYSTEMS IN MULTI-TRAILER COMBINATIONS ARE OPERATING CORRECTLY. ALL THE OPERATOR NEEDS TO DO IS ENSURE THAT THE LIGHT ON EACH TRAILER IS GREEN AND IF SO, FROM A TEBS PERSPECTIVE, EVERYTHING IS GOOD TO GO. If a lamp is not lit at all this signifies there is no power to the TEBS system which could be as simple as a power lead not connected or another power supply issue. A green lamp indicates the TEBS system is operational and ready to go on that trailer while a red lamp shows there is a fault on that individual trailer. The EBS status lamps display the individual trailer status and every trailer within the combination must have its own status lamp. Importantly, each lamp is wired independently to the others meaning one lamp’s function is not affected by another. Due to the copious quantity of mining activity in the state, Western Australia has an extremely large number of roadtrains doing both on and off-highway work. One of WA’s leading trailer builders, Bruce Rock Engineering (BRE), has come to rely on the durability and simplicity of Lucidity’s TEBS Status Lamp kit for its new trailer builds, many of which form triple or quad roadtrains. With Hans, it commenced with his PhD and the study of motorcycles in 1979, undertaken at the University of Melbourne, and thereafter progressed in a series of logical steps to innovative large off-highway mining trucks with gross weights approaching 500 tonnes. Meanwhile, Luan Mai was awarded a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Monash University and the J.W. Dodds Memorial Medal and Prize for Best Graduate in 1976. In 1982 Luan gained a PhD for outstanding research in the dynamics and control of load-sensitive pumps. A mine of innovation OVER A DIVERSE CAREER SPANNING MORE THAN FOUR DECADES, DR HANS PREM HAS DEVELOPED NOVEL ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS COMPLEX PROBLEMS – EVERYTHING FROM MOTORCYCLES TO 500-TONNE OFF-ROAD DUMP TRUCKS USED IN THE MINING INDUSTRY. Upon completing his Mechanical Engineering degree with first class honours at the University of Melbourne in 1979, Hans Prem undertook a PhD at the same University to study vehicle dynamics. With his choice of vehicle being the motorcycle, the focus of his research was to measure, using sophisticated equipment, and better understand the skills necessary to control a motorcycle with the ultimate aim of reducing high accident rates among low-time, inexperienced riders. Early in his career, after taking a research engineer/scientist position with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), Hans was given a thorny problem of national significance – the calibration of road roughness measuring equipment and the measurement and analysis of road surface unevenness, otherwise known as pavement rideability. This led him to develop the prototype version of ARRB’s laser-based profilometer which was the solution to the problem. Later versions of the profilometer, which became a flagship ARRB product and global service offering, are today used for surveys of road condition performed at the road-network level. On my second day they flew me to Melbourne for training. Q: What does a standard day for you look like? A: Firstly, no two days are the same, which is great. In my new role I am responsible for five other staff, three females and two males. We talk with customers everyday regarding their servicing and repair needs. Good communication is the key – often and early – especially if we’re going to need more time to complete a job. Q: What has been a highlight of your

Disrupting emerging markets with blockchain A DISTRIBUTED LEDGER TECHNOLOGY COMPANY WITH AN OPERATIONAL BASE IN NIGERIA AND SIERRA LEONE HAS DETAILED ITS RECENT PURSUITS IN AFRICA. A booming population like Africa (1.2 billion people) is in dire need of efficient systems to keep track of moving freight. Without the appropriate checks in place, what can you do if shipments disappear without a trace? At the forefront of this global concern, Domineum, headquartered in London, UK, was established to assist governments and companies with blockchain integration. In addition to conducting research and development in the US, it also saw an opportunity in the Nigerian market to modernise land and property registration. Poor official recordkeeping means the continent is rife with land-grabbers, which will only be exacerbated by shortages in food and fuel. There are reportedly more than 80 million landowners in Nigeria who lack property ownership certificates. If someone isn’t legally recognised as the owner of a patch of land, it makes sense that it cannot
