Unmasking the malaise The Modern Manufacturing Strategy, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, will see an investment of $1.5 billion to make Australian manufacturers more competitive, resilient and able to scale-up to take on the new world. This follows an announcement last month that framed the Strategy as being at the heart of the JobMaker plan. Morrison says it starts with creating a stable, competitive business environment to grow all parts of the country’s manufacturing sector and will also play to Australia’s strengths, improve collaboration and commercialisation and create a sector that is modern, dynamic and highly skilled. It is the Prime Minister’s intention that government, industry and the research and education sectors work in one direction to build scale in manufacturing, emphasising that manufacturing is critical to Australia’s economic future and to the prosperity of the regions and to the capabilities that underpin the success of other industries. The other part of the Strategy is a $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative that will complement this scale-up approach. The areas for priority here include resources technology and critical minerals processing, food and

4

beverage, medical products, recycling and clean energy, defence and space. Ai Group CEO, Innes Willox, said it was gratifying to see Government committed to creating the right conditions for industry growth through policy areas such as taxation, skills and training development, energy, innovation and deregulation. Manufacturing and media networking specialist, Peter Roberts, told Michael West Media that Morrison’s $1.5 billion plan changes nothing as the scale of the industry’s malaise is far greater than the Federal Government’s response. He argues that the sum of $1.5 billion is too small for the size of the problem for what is a $2 trillion economy. Peter’s assessment of the situation is that manufacturing is a low priority for the Government, especially when you consider the 10-year $1.9 billion scheme to invest in methods to lower emissions via tax cuts. Manufacturing is reported to employ around 860,000 Australians and prepandemic generated more than $100 billion in value annually and more than $50 billion in exports.

Road markings to support future vehicles: Report The design and maintenance of road markings can impact the performance of advanced driver assistance systems and future automated vehicles, a report has found. Autonomous vehicles, according to Austroads Future Vehicles and Technology Program Manager, John Wall, said there is a growing range of vehicles with automatedsteering functions that rely on road markings to position the vehicle on the road. They both progressed through the ranks and by the early 1980s were running the workshop. While they enjoyed the work, the pair believed they could do a better job and provide a higher level of service on their own. They decided, in 1984, to give it a crack. “We were young and bullet-proof and decided we would like to do this sort of

steering axles is recovered inside 12 months.” He does, however, add that there’s a caveat for achieving this phenomenal rubber longevity – timely tyre rotations including turning of the steering axle tyres on the rims. “It’s necessary to move the tyres from the steering axles to the forward fixed axles because the steering action tends to wear the inside shoulders after a while,” Matty says. “We turn the tyres on the rims initially and then we move them to the forward axles to ensure we get the maximum life from them. “We don’t do big kilometres, we average around 120,000km per year, a lot of which is around town in tight subdivisions, and a lot of forestry work where narrow tracks make access for Full Wideners more difficult.

Matty Winterfield said the Hybrid combines the stability of a Full Widener with the manoeuvrability of a Deck Widener.

INDUSTRY LEADERS

Infrastructure Australia to advise on Covid-19 recovery GOVERNMENT AGENCY, INFRASTRUCTURE AUSTRALIA, HAS RECEIVED ADDITIONAL FUNDING IN THE 2020–21 FEDERAL BUDGET TO PROVIDE REFORM AND INVESTMENT ADVICE IN SUPPORT OF THE INFRASTRUCTURELED COVID RECOVERY. Infrastructure Australia CEO, Romilly Madew.

This funding will ensure Infrastructure Australia is resourced to expand the 2021 Australian Infrastructure Plan to respond to Covid-19, lead new research on the capacity of the infrastructure sector to deliver the investment pipeline and conduct an 18-month comprehensive reset of the Infrastructure Australia Assessment Framework, the basis for inclusion on the Infrastructure Priority List. “We are pleased to receive additional resources to advise Australia’s governments on the investments and reforms needed to accelerate recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Infrastructure Australia CEO, Romilly Madew. “This year’s Budget has provided further investment in a sector already undertaking record levels of activity. This additional funding will support improved planning and decision-making to avoid constraints and overheating in the sector, reflective of the impacts of Covid-19.
