he more things change, the more they stay the same. This time last year, we were counting ourselves lucky that 2020 wasn’t a No-Dig Down Under year, with the thought being that Australia would be on top of the COVID-19 pandemic by the time the event rolled around in 2021. But alas, this year we find ourselves in the all-too-familiar territory of lockdowns and heavy restrictions. The situation in New South Wales is of particular concern, with new cases rising to more than 1,000 per day at the time of writing. As a result, the No-Dig team has had no choice but to postpone the event and it will now take place from 8-11 March 2022. Although we’ve all learned the hard way that nothing is guaranteed in a COVID world, hopefully by the time the new dates roll around Australia’s vaccination program will allow in-person events to go ahead without disruption and we can all attend safely. Despite the lockdowns and delays, I’m happy to say that Herrenknecht has now come on board as a Gold Sponsor of No-Dig in 2022. The company is a true expert in its field and has played a major part in an abundance of vital trenchless projects across Australia and New Zealand. As part of its support of the event, Herrenknecht will sponsor the official exhibition opening event at No-Dig on Tuesday 8 March 2022. Although this edition of Trenchless Australasia no longer contains the No-Dig show guide, there is still an abundance of interesting and timely trenchless content relevant to a wide section of the industry.
This issue features a cover story on page 24 about GN Solids’ safe and efficient slurry management solution, which has become a favoured choice for project operators in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US. A project article on page 30 details HDI Lucas’ work in the Northern Territory on one of 2021’s more interesting projects. The team at Trenchless Australasia has also put together a packed vacuum and hydro excavation feature starting on page 46, while you can find great content about horizontal directional drilling, tunnelling and microtunnelling, and relining throughout the magazine. It’s pleasing to see so much great trenchless work is still able to continue along Australia’s east coast, despite the widespread lockdowns. The industry has been able to pull together under challenging circumstances and complete work that is vital to the sustained operation of the infrastructure we rely on each day. I hope everyone can stay safe and healthy and I look forward to finally seeing everyone in person again at No-Dig next year. David Convery Managing Editor david.convery@primecreative.com.au
