Town Dedicates East Patchogue Street in Honor of PFC Anton A. “Tony” Bugala USMC

O

n November 2, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Neil Foley, Councilman Michael Loguercio, Receiver of Taxes Lou Marcoccia, other State and County officials, veteran groups, friends, and family were on hand to dedicate a portion of North Dunton Avenue in East Patchogue in honor of the late PFC Anton A. “Tony” Bugala USMC. The ceremony, which was held at the corner of North Dunton Avenue and Irving Avenue, featured a moving, personal and historical recounting of PFC Bugala’s short, but heroic life. As a member of Echo Company, 1st Marine Raider Battalion during World War II, he gave his life at age 21 in defense of our nation on September 14, 1942, at the battle of Edson’s Ridge on the Island of Guadalcanal. PFC. Bugala enlisted while living on a farm in East Patchogue directly across from what is now the Verne W. Critz Elementary School. The dedication was made possible through the Town of Brookhaven, South Bay VFW Post 8300, Hagerman Fire Department and South Country Ambulance Company. 50+

The Adventures of Being Senior

W

e seniors are the retired ones, yes? According to the Random House Dictionary “retire” is defined as move to withdraw, to go away to a place of shelter or seclusion, or, to go to bed “Hell, No. And, get out of here,” I say. That’s not my vision of what I wanted to do when I “retired.” And I didn’t. My teaching career, spent happily introducing the natural laws to the students in my science classes, prepared me for a whole range of adventures and possibilities. The first was a venture into college teaching, designing my own courses (Yay for academic freedom) in forensic science and biotechnology at Hofstra University, acting as a science consultant for BOCES, and supervising student teachers at Adelphi University. The aha moment came while sitting in the high school library on a quiet winter day, staring at the snow falling past the windows. I was writing a case study (really a short mystery story) for my forensic class to solve. I loved the story and realized that I could make that story into a book. Thus, was born the Annie Tillery Mystery Series or, as I call them, Nancy Drew meets CSI. I wrote the first two books while taking a course in novel writing. I subsequently published them, and the real fun began, marketing the books (crassly know as selling). There exists a dizzying array of opportunities. It was all-consuming. I did the book fairs, gave interviews, made podcasts, and finally was lucky enough to find local access TV in East Hampton, LTV. There I learned to produce my own show, The Writer’s Dream, a show for readers and writers, all about books and the aspects of their genesis. Great fun for the last eight years! See it on YouTube and Cablevision 20. Alas, life is full of cycles and I’ve come full circle. I now do a lecture series on topics in Forensic Science at continuing education programs at local universities, men’s and women’s clubs, and libraries. My piece of advice, “If you’re planning on ‘retiring,’ make a plan. It could be the best adventure of your life.” Web sites: www.lindamariafrank.com, www.annietillery.com. n original cast member of one of the most successful franchises in television history, The Real Housewives of New York, Luann de Lesseps was just ranked the #1 Housewife by TV Guide, topping all 46 housewives across all franchised cities. The hit show is now entering its 12th season but Luann is just hitting her stride. The model-turnedCountess has transformed herself into an author, philanthropist, actor and bona fide cabaret star. This past year de Lesseps started packing venues with her show, #COUNTESSANDFRIENDS, to rave reviews from venerable publications such as Vanity Fair and The New York Times. #COUNTESSANDFRIENDS is filled with hilarious stories, one-of-a-kind anecdotes, and songs in her inimitable style. Alongside Grammy nominated musical director Billy Stritch, Luann has performed on an all-star bill at New York City’s Town Hall with icons Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera, to name a few. She has also performed with the legendary Natalie Cole. Her globally known dance hits “Money Can’t Buy You Class,” “Chic C’est La Vie” and “Girl Code” resulted in her own Pandora station, and her hit tracks lift audiences to their feet when she performs them live. Just ask uber fans Jennifer Lawrence and Chrissy Teigen, only two of the wellknown admirers of the Countess. There’s more! Fans can subscribe to the new Countess Luann YouTube channel, follow her on Spotify and listen to her new hit song “Feelin’ Jovani.” When not on The Real Housewives of New York, Luann can be seen on programs such as TODAY, The View, The Talk, Dr. Oz, Wendy Williams, E! Entertainment, Steve Harvey, Access Hollywood and, of course, Watch What Happens Live. She also has appeared in scripted series such as Hulu’s Difficult People and Law & Order: SVU alongside Mariska Hargitay. Luann has launched the Feelin’ Jovani bomber jacket alongside her new hit single of the same title to support Women’s Prison Association’s Women Care Program and The Young Women’s Freedom Center. Along with her children Victoria and Noel and their dog Aston, De Lesseps splits her time between her homes in New York City, Upstate New York and the Hamptons, the latter of which was featured in Architectural Digest. She continues to tour with #COUNTESSANDFRIENDS, the 12th season of The Real Housewives of New York City is currently filming as she is working on a follow-up to her successful first book, Class With the Countess. Social Security Low COLAs, Rising Costs new analysis from The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) indicates that Social Security checks in 2019 are as much as 18-percent lower due to the impact of extremely low COLAs over the past ten years. From 2000 to 2010, COLAs routinely averaged three percent annually. People who have been receiving Social Security benefits since 2009 have only seen a COLA higher than 2.8 percent one time (in 2012). The Social Security Administration announced that the 2020 COLA will be just 1.6 percent, continuing the worrisome trend in which COLAs have averaged just 1.4 percent from 2000 to 2010. “Adequate COLAs are critical to retirement security,” says Mary Johnson, a Social Security policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League (www.SeniorsLeague.org). “Social Security is one of the only types of retirement income that provides this essential protection against rising costs. When a retiree’s costs rise faster than their COLA, the buying power of Social Security benefits erodes, leaving people with a benefit that doesn’t go as far as it did when they first retired,” Johnson noted. According

A

to research by Johnson, Social Security benefits have lost 33 percent of buying power since 2000. In 2010, 2011, and 2016 there was no COLA payable at all and, in 2017, the COLA was just 0.03 percent. Likewise, in 2018, the COLA was two percent, but rising Part B premiums consumed the entire increase for roughly half of all beneficiaries. COLAs act much like interest rates on savings. Low COLAs mean Social Security benefits grow more slowly in retirement. This occurs even though many costs experienced by retirees, such out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs — may grow several times as fast. “People who have been retired for 10 years or longer have absorbed the full financial blow of low COLAs,” Johnson says. Johnson’s analysis found that, over a 10-year period, average Social Security benefits of $1,075 per month in 2009 lost a total of $15,258 in financial growth from 2010 to 2019 when compared to the previous decade when COLAs averaged three percent. By the end of that 10-year period, average benefits

were $223 per month lower than they would have been had inflation averaged the more typical three percent.

The Senior Citizens League supports legislation that would require a minimum COLA of no less than 3 percent, even in years when inflation falls below that amount. “Strengthening the COLA,” Johnson says, “would help slow the drain of drain of retirement savings and help keep older Americans out of poverty.” To learn more, visit www.SeniorsLeague.org. 50+

Schumer: ‘Dollar’ Bargain Stores — Across NYC & LI —

Are Stocking Cheap, Dangerous Drugs

S

tanding at one of the more than 150 dollartype bargain stores across our area, and amidst a new warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about over-thecounter (OTC) drugs being received by a variety of dollar-type bargain stores doing business across New York City and Long Island, U.S. Senator Schumer demanded a federal crackdown on China’s ability to send these shoddy, and potentially dangerous OTC drugs here in the first place via Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the FDA. “The feds cannot pass the buck and allow ‘dollar’ type stores across our area to receive bad or even dangerous over-the-counter drugs in the first place, and the retailers in question need to toss any bad product right now,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. For years, it has been understood that a variety of Chinese-made products, particularly drugs, are manufactured in low-quality, unregulated, even dangerous conditions. Heeding these longstanding concerns, your agency has worked hard, alongside the FDA, to inspect and detect questionable shipments from China to prevent

them from hitting store shelves. However, the recent warning issued by the FDA to Dollar Tree and other related subsidiaries heightens concerns and sheds new light on an unsolved problem with Chinese-made OTC drugs. “Therefore, to prevent an influx of questionable and potentially unsafe OTC drugs from being stocked on New York bargain store shelves, I’ve asked CBP and the FDA to begin a targeted crackdown and answer new questions about the scope of the problem and the measures in place to prevent this from happening again with Dollar Tree or any other bargain store in New York and beyond,” Schumer added. Schumer also demanded that NYC and Long Island bargain ‘dollar’ stores stocking or receiving any foreign drugs, especially from China, toss the product immediately and better inform their customers of what is going on. Schumer said there is no telling exactly which Dollar Tree or Family Dollar stores or any other subsidiaries are shelving the questionable drug products, so Schumer called out the more than 170 relevant storefronts across the city and Long Island. The number of Dollar Tree and Family Dol-

lar stores throughout the five boroughs of NYC and on Long Island is detailed in the table below. There are 170 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores in total in the five boroughs of NYC and 71 in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Schumer said many of these bargain OTC drugs have long been known by the FDA to be manufactured in unsafe conditions and that no New York retailer—not a single one—should be stocking or receiving them to begin with. Schumer demanded the feds — via the CBP and the FDA — wage a cooperative crackdown on China’s ability to ship shoddy OTC drugs, from topicals to cosmetics, to New York in the first place as he warns bargain store customers. According to CNBC, as part of their new warning, “The FDA analyzed import data and found Dollar Tree bought and received products from foreign companies that had received warning letters and had been placed on import alert for manufacturing issues. The agency also alleges that Greenbrier, operating as Dollar Tree, has used contract manufacturers and suppliers with “significant” violations for its private-label Assured Brand drugs.” 50+

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad By Randal C. Hill

R

emember those dreaded “duck and cover” school drills that (supposedly) prepared us for surviving an atomic bomb attack? If you do, you probably also recall one particular movie that reflected what so many of us worried about — Them!. The 1950s were the golden years of teen-oriented horror films, and one popular subgenre in that decade featured dangerous, oversized creatures running amok and wreaking havoc while chewing up hapless humans along the way. The first of such offbeat offerings was the now-classic 1954 giant-ant thriller, its existence being owed in large part to Ted Sherdeman. After two Japanese cities were annihilated by American atomic bombs in 1945, Sherdeman adopted a lifelong hatred of all nuclear weapons. After serving in World War II, he became a staff producer at Warner Bros. One day, a studio worker pitched Sherdeman a science-fiction story idea about gigantic, destructive, irradiated ants. “The idea appealed to me very much,” Sherdeman told the horror/fantasy/sci-fi periodical Cinefantastique years later. “Aside from man, ants are the only creatures in the world that plan to wage war.” [Since he uttered that statement, however, it has been shown that certain chimpanzee “gangs” also share this unfortunate trait with humans.] Sherdeman’s script promoted his anti-nuke philosophy by having a savvy old scientist (played by Edmund Gwenn) declare that the ants’ mutations were probably caused by lingering radiation from the first atomic bomb. He also grimly quotes the Bible: “And there shall be destruction and darkness come up in creation, and the beasts shall reign over the

Earth.” The movie’s deadly creatures appeared onscreen via a combination of puppetry and animatronics (lifelike robots or puppets used in films decades ago). For Them!, two fully operational mechanical ants were constructed, the first being a 12-foot behemoth outfitted with gears, levers, motors and pulleys. The big bug appeared mainly in long shots. For close-ups, the front three-quarters of a large-scale ant was built and mounted on a camera crane. Smaller, non-motorized models were used when a scene called for ant swarms. Them! was originally to be shot in color and 3D; however, the bean counters at Warner Bros. nixed the extra expense, so the film was released as a two-dimensional, black and white “B” movie. To Warner Bros.’ surprise, Them! raked in $2.2 million—about $20 million today. Two famous actors owed their spectacular careers to Them!. In 1954, Walt Disney was developing a series for ABC-TV based on frontier legend Davy Crockett. James Arness (who played an FBI agent in Them!) was on Disney’s short list of candidates for the starring role. However, a young Texan in Them! named Fess Parker also attracted Disney’s attention. When Parker appeared briefly on the screen as a pajama-clad pilot locked in a psych ward, Uncle Walt knew right then that he had found his leading man. The next year, Parker, as Davy Crockett, became an international television star (and helped to sell 10M coonskin caps), while Arness became gruff marshal Matt Dillon on CBS-TV’s 20-year-running Gunsmoke.50+

Enjoying the Holidays with Hearing Loss he holiday season is here and, while it is marked by joyous gatherings of friends and family, for those with hearing loss, the holidays can be overwhelming. Difficulty following and understanding conversations can be extremely frustrating and stressful for both the person with hearing loss and their family. Don’t let hearing loss stop you from enjoying the celebrations. Follow these tips to spend the holidays in good spirits: Position yourself in a good spot: Sit with your back towards a wall to block background noise. At seated meals, try to sit near the middle of the table. You’ll have a better chance of hearing the conversation. If the party is in multiple rooms, head to the quieter room. You can invite some friends to join you. Avoid background noise when possible: Keep background music to a minimum. If you are a guest in someone’s home, don’t be shy. Ask the host to lower the volume. Converse with those next to you: Don’t try to participate in conversations across large distances. If you would like to talk with someone, move closer to him, or ask that you continue the conversation in a quieter location. Have reasonable expectations: You probably won’t hear everything that everyone says, but that is OK. Enjoy talking to the people near you, then seek out others to talk with during other parts of the party. Take a break: Step away for few minutes to give your ears and brain a rest. Head to the restroom, find a quiet spot in another room or go outside for a few minutes. Don’t fake it: It’s tempting to just nod along and pretend you hear

T

what others are saying. This can be dangerous should someone ask you a question. Be honest with others if you’re having trouble hearing. It will make your interactions more memorable. Address your hearing loss before the holidays: This is the perfect time to contact your local hearing professional to schedule a hearing assessment. They will be able to recommend the best hearing solution for you, your lifestyle and your budget. Is Medicare Plan F Going Away in 2020? Erica Clout, Director of Medicare Customer Care Services, Senior Health Care Benefits Group

M

edigap Plan F is the most comprehensive Medicare supplement you can buy in 2019. Also referred to as Medicare Supplement Plan F, it covers both Medicare deductibles and all copays and coinsurance, leaving you with nothing out of pocket. Medicare supplement Plan F has also been the #1 seller with Baby Boomers for many years. According to a report from America’s Health Insurance professionals, about 57% of all Medigap policies in force were a premium Medicare Plan F policy. (In recent years, Plan G has been the second most popular Medicare supplement plan) A Medigap plan, or Medicare Supplement, pays after Medicare to help cover your deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that you would otherwise be responsible for. Medigap plans do not replace your Medicare Part B. You must be enrolled in both Part A and Part B first, then you are eligible to enroll in Medicare supplement Plan F. Every year there are changes to plans and rumors and misinformation abounds. Perhaps the biggest one is the Medigap Plan F is going away. If you are already enrolled in Medicare whether you have a Medigap Plan or not you will still be able to enroll in Plan F or any of the other Medigap plans. If you are new to Medicare in 2020 you will still be able to get a MediGap plan, but you will have to select G, N or one of the other plans When you add a Medicare Supplement Plan F or G to your Original Medicare benefits, your coverage will be quite comprehensive. By definition, Medigap Plan F is the Medicare supplement policy with the most benefits. Which is the Best Medicare Plan? Plan F and Plan G are the two most popular Medigap plans. Plan F covers all the gaps in Medicare. Plan G is only slightly different, so it is also

a popular seller. When you compare Plans F and G side by side, you’ll immediately notice that Plan G has only one difference: the Part B deductible. If you compare annual premiums for Plan G and the premiums save you more than you will pay out for the Part B deductible, then enrolling in Plan G makes sense.

Q: We have an original 1932 Ford Roadster that my father-in-law bought new in 1932, and it runs like a top. Every Christmas morning, my family and I take a ride in it, with the rumble seat and trunk rack packed with all of our presents. We hope to continue our Christmas tradition for many more years. — Mary Ann Smith

What is your most cherished holiday tradition?

My favorite Hanukkah tradition is hanging the large plastic matzoh balls from the ceiling in our house. We use the same decorations every year, unless they get hopefully deflated – if one falls down, the kids play ball with it. We started this tradition in our family. — Iris Astrof

Every year, our family attended a performance of the Nutcracker. We loved the magic of the show and the discussions we had afterward. The Nutcracker tradition continues on through our grandchildren, who actually performed in productions, with Riley playing the character of Clara twice. — Lorraine Mund

Every Christmas since I can remember I started a scavenger hunt with the kids. It starts with a present that contains a little poem that they must read out loud that leads them from gift to gift, however, each "gift" is yet another gift box containing yet another poem that brings them to the final actual gift. — Carol Giorgio

About 30 years ago, my sister-in-law started an activity after Christmas dinner for the kids. She would put white icing on cupcakes, and she provided lots of fun, colorful decorations for the kids to decorate the cupcakes with. As the children got older, the decorating became very competitive! They still look forward to it! — Jeanne Marino

Without a doubt, what I cherish most during the holidays is my adherence to the “Four F’s” – which stands for family, friends, food and, fun - in no particular order. And this year, I’m adding another “F” for festive! So now my holidays include the five “Fs!” — Susan Canin

Long Island Woman Visits with Pope Francis JFK, International Airports Send Reps to Seminar By Mary Malloy olores Hofman, 72, a resident of Island Park, travelled to the Vatican and had the “absolute thrill” of an audience with Pope Francis last summer in Rome, Italy. “When I got the call asking if I wanted to go it was ‘Color me gone!’ exclaimed Hofman. “I couldn’t believe that I was going,” she said. I Googled what to wear … I made sure my black dress fell beneath my knee, and I had my shoulders and toes covered.” Hofman said she psyched herself not to cry, and rehearsed what she was going to say, as each person had only a few seconds. “I knew how to say it in Italian, but when I shook his hand, I said, ‘I love you…you are my favorite Pope,’ in English, as I clutched my heart-shaped brooch. Sweet Potato Lasagna By Dan Zeller

I

am not the same person I was 25 years ago, neither is my diet. Last night I watched my 25-year-old son eat two boxes of Cheerios, topped with some sliced bananas, then get up the next morning and go to the gym for a two-hour work out. I’m not certain I could do that when I was a young 25-year-old, but what I am certain of, is I could not do that today. Today I am a 55-year- ld and I just cannot eat the same foods I ate when I was 25. My mind may say “Yes!” but my body says “No!” I need to rediscover the tastes I loved at age 25, using the ingredients I can handle at age 55. When I was a young, spry, 25-year old, I learned how to make lasagna. I used sweet Italian sausage to make a thick, rich tomato-based sauce, which I layered between sheets of pasta, along with creamy ricotta cheese and fresh mozzarella. I could eat lasagna for dinner, then top it with a poached egg for breakfast the next morning. Today, times are different. I am different. I cannot have the sausage, or the cheese and I need to be careful about how much pasta I eat. The hardest part of changing my diet is just accepting the fact that I need to change my diet. I cook and eat foods with the same flavors I remember, but without the ingredients I need to avoid. So, my new lasagna consists of sweet potatoes, and the sauce is a tomato sauce with fresh fennel, peppers, garlic and onions. 50+

Pope Francis agreed to have an audience with the group and gave a lovely address. “You are called to bring the message and presence of Christ,” he said, in part. “… and bring everyone, whether Christian or not, the good news of God’s tender love, hope and peace.” Dolores is in her 53rd year working at JFK as Program Manager of the Queens Air Services Development Office, a not-for-profit organization that helps local businesses get airport contracts at both JFK and LaGuardia airports (Hence her nickname as “The Airport Matchmaker.” In the 70s, she was the first female forklift operator at JFK, and was featured on the cover of 50 Plus Lifestyles August 2018 edition in the story” Airport Matchmaker Broke the Glass Ceiling.” Hofman is also involved in many community organizations. She was crowned Ms. New York Senior America’s queen in 2016. “Meeting the Pope was an absolute surreal experience,” Hofman said. “I have to ask myself if it really happened. He certainly lives up to his reputation, with his warmth, and a smile that makes you feel like he was interested in talking to just you.” 50+

Ingredients 1/2 medium yellow onion, small diced 1/2 large red bell pepper, small diced 1/2 fresh fennel bulb. Small diced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped 1/2 cup red wine 3 cups tomato sauce of your choice 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8 inch thick 1/2 cup nutritional yeast Spray a 12-inch sauce pan with spray oil and add the chopped onion. Place the pan over medium heat and cook the onion, stirring occasionally for 10 minutes. Add the pepper and the fennel and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Add the garlic and the red wine and cook until almost all the red wine is evaporated. Add the tomato sauce. Mix together and remove from the heat. The sauce should be thick and chunky. Spray the bottom of a 10-inch casserole pan with a tight-fitting lid. Add enough sauce to the pan to cover the bottom. Cover the sauce with 1/3 of the sliced sweet potatoes, spoon 1/4 of the remaining sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle generously with1/2 of the nutritional yeast. Add another 1/3 of the sliced sweet potatoes followed by another 1/4 of the tomato sauce and the remaining nutritional yeast. Add the remaining sliced sweet potato and top with the remaining sauce. Cover and bake for one hour or until the potatoes are tender when a sharp knife is inserted into the casserole. Remove the casserole from the oven and let sit for 30 to 40 minutes to set.

It’s All Uphill for the 50 Plus Ski Club Long Island Seniors Enjoy a Variety of Trips, Excursions By Mary Malloy

T

he 50 Plus Ski Club of Long Island offers local residents 50-andover a flurry of activities, including cross-country and downhill ski trips, hiking, whitewater rafting down the Delaware River, biking excursions to Jones Beach, the Hamptons, and other sites throughout Long Island, as well as trips to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Fifty has never been so much fun! Some members go on many trips, while others take only one big trip a year, or no trips at all. There are ski trips in the winter months, and other type of outdoor activities the rest of the year. The only requirement for membership is being at least 50 years of age. Most members live in either Nassau or Suffolk counties in New York, while other members live in New Jersey and New York City. The 50 Plus Ski Club was founded in 1988, and retired Levittown principal Gary Schorr, 74, became the organization’s president 15 years ago. “I always loved being active, and the club offers skiing, biking and other activities that appealed to me. It’s a very nice group of people.” There are currently about 100 members, including singles and couples. Most of them are skiers, but others enjoy bike riding and other excursions. Ski trips are planned for four months out of the year, and the active group of bicyclists ride almost every Wednesday in the spring, summer and fall. On one excursion, 16 club members and friends traveled to South America and visited Rio de Janeiro, the spectacular Iguaza Falls, and Buenos Aires. Schorr said that trip coordinator Lois Robbins does an excellent job of organizing the events.

“Setting the standard for Stairlift design and dependability”

Another club favorite is whitewater rafting on the Delaware River in the spring, and they’ve also sponsored a canoe trip down one of the rivers on Long Island, usually ending with dinner at a picturesque restaurant. Hiking trips are popular in the fall and spring. Two ski trips are planned for January 2020, the first in Stratton, Vermont, and the second in Lake Tahoe. The club has also sponsored a moonlit boat ride around the Statue of Liberty and a tour of the American Museum of Natural History. “New members are always welcomed,” said Schorr. “People can choose which activities they’d like to do. Usually they are already active and fit and in reasonably good health. There is something for everyone.” Information about upcoming meetings can be found at www.50plusski.org, or visit them on Facebook at 50+ SKI CLUB (Long Island) 50+
