What You Need To Know Before Buying A Stairlift By Evelyn Ziegler, “Aging In Home” Consultant ong Island seniors who feel like “there is no place like home” are remodeling their home to make it easier to accommodate their current lifestyle and are adding items like stairlifts, wheelchair lifts and ramps to help deal with disabilities and prevent dangerous accidents. Many older adults or persons with disabilities continue to enjoy good health, and want to remain in their home, but find navigating stairs and coming or leaving home to be a challenge. A stairlift or ramp is often the perfect solution. It’s more affordable and comfortable to install a convenience like a stairlift or wheelchair lift or ramp than to move into an assisted living complex, a nursing home or other elder care facility. Recently, I visited the office of Tom Knoblauch, owner of StairGlideNY, one of Long Island’s premier distributors and installers of state-of-the art stairlifts, wheelchair ramps and lifts. They are conveniently located in West Babylon on Sunrise Highway. In his showroom Tom demonstrated how easy it was to operate a stairlift. He explained how his stairlifts do not require structural changes to the home and do not damage the stairs or change the décor. The stairlifts are designed to be quiet, efficient with smooth start and stop functionality. There designed for safety and comforts with features like swivel seats so there is no twisting, safety sensors should there be an obstruction on the stair and much more. While I waited, I watched Tom explain to a couple who were visiting his showroom how to decide on what stairlift would be right for their home. He shared a wealth of information and made it easy for them to choose the right stairlift for their home. Before I left Tom provide this additional information about stairlift selection. Stairlift style: Stairlifts are available straight, curved and even outdoor stairways for front & patios steps. Safety features: All StairGlide of New

L

York stairlifts include multiple safety features: The chair and foot rest fold up when not in use to allow passage on the stairs, safety belts, and lockable seats, a remote control feature to allow others to operate and you stairlift will continue to function (1.5-2.5 hrs) even if power goes out. Support: Pre-purchase and after purchase support from trained factory technicians who can recommend the proper configuration and address any issues that may come up is critical. Stairlifts can be tested at the company’s showroom and a technician can visit your home for consultations. Stairlifts can be removed and reinstalled should you move and feature the best warranty available: lifetime warranty on the motor and gearbox, lifetime warranty on the rail system, and one year warranty on all other components. Stairlifts are also available on a rental program. StairGilde of New York is A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and led by Tom Knoblauch, President. The Joy of Midweek Skiing s a retiree, I often reflect back on my earlier skiing days when I worked a 40-plus hour, 8-5 schedule, Monday through Friday. My skiing was generally limited to weekends or holiday periods which usually meant long lift lines, crowded lodges, high ticket prices, and long walks from the parking lot. At times, I was just lucky enough to get in two runs down the mountain in an hour. Finding a place to sit, eat, and relax in a crowded lodge was typically challenging. Enter midweek skiing: gone are the long lift lines and crowds. Whether you are retired, or have reached a point in your employment when you can take an occasional personal or vacation day, you will find midweek skiing to be a peaceful and stimulating experience. (We don’t advocate using sick days unless skiing is prescribed by your doctor!) Casually skiing down a mountain without dodging ski traffic, or looking out for Shaun White and Lindsay Vonn wannabes, allows you to focus on your stance, style and overall control. Cocoa and meal breaks are relaxed and unrushed, allowing casual conversations with your ski mates. The walk back to your car at the end of the day is much shorter.

Midweek lift ticket prices at the major Catskill resorts (Windham, Hunter, and Belleayre) are generally 10-15 percent below the weekend rates, with further discounts often available to seniors and military personnel, and for tickets purchased online. Additionally, Belleayre offers "Why Not Wednesdays” when one-day lift tickets are just $36 plus one unopened Dasani bottled water. (Not valid February 19, 2020.) See the resorts’ individual websites for other promotions offered. Whichever price paid, you are sure to get your money’s worth from the added downhill runs you can do. Many Catskill resorts recently improved their facilities by adding high-speed chair lifts, gondolas, and upgraded lodges. If you have been off your skis for a while, try the midweek ski experience. The relaxed atmosphere will certainly be more enjoyable and you will see an improvement in your skiing ability. Consider accompanying the 50+ Ski Club for midweek ski outings. Skiers of all abilities are welcome to join us. The Coparazzi By Vincent Casale or as long as I could remember I was in love with the arts. Movies, television and reading were integral parts of my life. When I wasn’t immersed, I was daydreaming and wanting to be, as I felt I could, a method actor in the shadow of Brando, Pacino and McQueen. My highest grades in school were in English and writing. One high school teacher, Ms. Horn, wanted me to join the school theatre troupe but I declined, opting instead to hang with my friends. When I briefly joined an acting school after graduation I quit without any great attempts and the instructor, who thought it was about money, urged me to stay, he would let me ride for free. I declined. Like many city kids, I, unfortunately, lacked true ambition. With no manual skills and no college, I joined the New York City Police Department in 1984. Being NYC Police Officer was second best to my flights of artistic fancy. Not only was the NYPD a truly admirable job but I was privy a front row seat to situations sometimes unimaginable. A bank of stories forever collected in my mind. In many ways, a police officer is the protagonist in a story, out there in the forefront of real life. In 1989, I managed to get assigned to the New York Police Department, Movie and TV Unit where our job was to insure permits, maintain safety and control traffic conditions, as the motion picture industry filmed on the streets and along the landscape of NY. The marriage of the unit and motion pictures was the greatest show on earth. Since writing was a hobby, I not only collected many celebrity photos, but would write about the encounters for memory, on cups, in my memo book, and on scraps of paper. Subsequently, when I retired I transformed all my notes into my first book, The Coparazzi. I continued, writing two more books, The Casualties of Divorce, and a collection of poetry, Forty Octobers. I realize that writing cannot be approached as prestigious. I have met many, especially on Long Island, talented and struggling artists who love the life. As part of the Veterans Program Incentive Office Award, the Massapequa Career Center was praised for their ability to help a higher percentage of veterans than non-veterans find employment, and was praised for having a lower percentage of unemployed veterans. “The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to supporting the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces upon their return home,” said Supervisor Saladino. ”I commend the employees in our career center for this important recognition from New York State for their service to our veterans.” The Town’s Workforce Partnership program has been a huge success since its inception. Recent data released by the New York State Department of Labor indicates a 3.3 percent unemployment rate in the Town of Oyster Bay - significantly lower than the County unemployment rate, the State unemployment rate, and the National unemployment rate. Legislator Donnelly Honors Veterans on 75th Anniversary of The Battle of The Bulge Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently attended a commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook where he joined in honoring five veterans for their courageous participation in the historic event. Frank De Pergola, Philip Di Marco, James Lynam, Thomas Struminski and, posthumously, Charles J. Tsunis, each received accolades and awards during the solemn ceremony on December 16, 2019. Several told their still-vivid memories about what is considered the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in World War II. Keynote Speaker John C. Tsunis, the son of Charles, sharing his own father’s stories of the battle, said that being at the Long Island State Veterans home made him feel like he was with his dad again. Legislator Donnelly presented each honored veteran with a County Proclamation and later remarked that the program was particularly moving and personal for him. Flushing House, an Independent Living Community, partnered with City Harvest who exists to end hunger in communities throughout New York City. City Harvest does this through food rescue and distribution, education, and other practical, innovative solutions. This cause hits so close to home for so many residents of Flushing House because we are all New Yorkers, many of us have been our whole life. Rallying together for a worthy cause, with assistance from Activities Leaders Wilfredy moya Arenas and Nazima Pasha, the residents of Flushing House worked together to collect over 276 pounds of non-perishable food items to donate to their fellow New Yorkers. Residents were made aware of the community donation efforts through the monthly newsletter and community television channel where they were encouraged to contribute whatever they could. The response was overwhelming and additional bins were needed to hold the boxes and bags of donations. The residents of Flushing House are always looking for ways they can contribute to their community. Recently, a volunteer luncheon was held to honor those who have contributed their time and effort to greater causes. Over 30 Flushing House residents were treated with a luncheon, commemorative t-shirt and special gift for their hard work this past year. Not ‘Just a Singer in a Rock & Roll Band’ John Lodge of The Moody Blues Coming to Long Island By Mary Malloy • Photo Courtesy John Lodge fter a successful North American tour this summer as part of “Yes,” John Lodge, bass guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 inductees The Moody Blues, is gearing up for another tour in the US – including Long Island’s Suffolk Theater in Riverhead on March 7, 2020. “I always remember my first time in New York,” Lodge reminisced. “It was 1968, and we were doing a show around Thanksgiving time, but we didn’t have a concert that particular night, so a nice family invited us to their home for dinner. Three years ago, at the Chicago airport, a lady came up to me and said, “I bet you don’t remember, but I was eight years old when you came to our house for Thanksgiving!” Of course, I did remember. New Yorkers are always in that New York state of mind!” Raised in Surrey, south of London, England, Lodge is a songwriter of such mega Moody Blues hits as “Ride My See Saw,” “I’m Just A Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band),” “Isn’t Life Strange?” and many more. He’s been performing and recording with The Moody Blues for more than five

A

decades, selling in excess of 70 million albums. He’s been voted one of the “Ten most influential bass players on the planet,” and has been the recipient of many awards, including an ASCAP (American Society of Composers and Publishers), Ivor Novello Award. Lodge will kick off his U.S. tour with a Rock and Romance Cruise in February, sailing out of Miami, Florida. “It’s really so enjoyable,” he said before starting his second tour. “I have a great time with a wonderful band of musicians [who are] so dedicated to the music, keeping The Moody Blues music alive … it’s been part of my life to continue that heritage. The other music we do is from my solo album B YOND – THE VERY BEST OF, which has just been released in the US” The new album features musicians of the 10,000 Light Years Band and includes the best of his career with the Moody Blues, as well as his solo work. B YOND – THE VERY BEST OF features three new recordings, two new remixes, and other Moody Blues tracks chosen by Lodge (it’s co-produced by John and Alan Hewitt, and features Lodge on his original Fender Precision Bass.) The

CD version as well as streaming and digital versions are available now. “Long Island has always been great,” Lodge recalls. “We’ve performed at Jones Beach, that’s always a great venue. [Suffolk Theater] is a new venue for us, and we love getting into the theaters again, as opposed to large arenas, so we can be one-on-one with the audience, like I did in my early days in London.” For tickets, visit www.suffolktheater.com and hit “Shows.” Performance, 8 p.m., doors, bar and restaurant open at 6:30 p.m. The Suffolk Theater is located at 118 E. C

BD is all the buzz. You’ve heard about it on the news, and seen it in stores and magazines. Yet most have ver y lit tle clarit y on what it is, what it is not, what it does and why choosing your CBD wisely is of utmost importance. What is CBD? Cannabidiol, or CBD as it is more commonly known, is a natural botanical concentrate found in a class of diverse compounds called cannabinoids. These compounds are derived from the stalk and seeds of cannabis plants (hemp and marijuana). The main f unct ional dif ference bet ween hemp and marijuana is the measurable level of THC. Marijuana is grown specifically to contain significant levels of THC, (Tetrahydrocannabinol), while hemp has only trace amounts of THC. CBD found nat urally in hemp is legal in the United States – while CBD f rom marijuana is federally illegal in the U.S., though state-by-state legalizat ion is occurring rapidly. Hemp CBD is non-psychoact ive, which means it has the potent ial to deliver various mental and physical benefits without any of the unwanted side ef fects. It’s healthy without the high. CBD has an ant i-inf lammatory effect 20x that of aspirin and 2x that of hydrocort isone. CBD has become a popular commodit y in the nat ural health industry. This is partly because CBD, like other cannabinoids, interacts with the body’s naturally occurring Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is responsible for promot ing balance and reg ulat ing f unct ions like appet ite, sleep, immune response and so much more!

Is all CBD cre ated equal? As CBD cont inues to move into the mainstream, polic ymakers are also beginning to take not ice and create meaningf ul reform, as evident with the recent passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which of ficially legalized the (reg ulated) product ion of hemp. St udies have shown that 90% of CBD products have labels that do not match their lab analysis and many products have been shown to contain no CBD oil at all. When choosing your CBD, it’s important to know if it has the US Hemp Authorit y Seal. This will eliminate the large majorit y of your choices. Next, is it Triple L ab Tested by an outside part y? CBD is a bio-accumulator which means it cleans the soil by pulling the tox ins directly into the plant. If your hemp is grown on soil that has previously been treated with pest icides, you will reap that in your end product. With no reg ulat ion on CBD products, labels can lie. Know your oil. It’s Just a Game! (Or Is It?) By Randall C. Hill n November 25, 2019, three months before Super Bowl LIV was to be played on February 2, 2020, Fox TV announced that the game at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium was sold out of available advertising spots. Companies that hadn’t already ponied up $5.5 million dollars per 30-second message were out of luck. The Super Bowl has become a spectacular yearly advertising and entertainment event…and there’s even a football game thrown in for good measure! Tickets for those who want to witness the event for themselves now cost an average of $2,500 to $3,500 per seat. Over the years, numerous music icons have brought a true “wow” factor to the halftime performances and included Motown superstars (Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson), several iconic hitmakers (Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Prince, Katy Perry, Beyonce’) and some legendary UK entertainers (Phil Collins, U2, the Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney). Today’s Super Bowl draws a viewing audience of about 100 million. It’s America’s biggest annual sporting competition (although the World Cup soccer games draw more viewers worldwide). But, for many Americans, it’s more a boisterous afternoon of fun and friendship than a sports contest. More food — and presumably more drink — is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year except Thanksgiving. It wasn’t always this way. The first such game wasn’t even called the Super Bowl. Played on January 15, 1967, it was officially termed the AFL – NFL World Championship Game. But NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle wanted something a bit punchier, something easy to remember. The Pro Bowl, perhaps, or maybe even The Big One.

O

The name by which it later became known originated with Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs. He had seen his young daughter play with a bouncing toy called a Super Ball, and Hunt was inspired to propose the name Super Bowl for the contest. Rozelle declared the term too informal, but it didn’t take long for Hunt’s recommendation to take hold with the public. That first game was far from being a sellout. By kickoff time, about 1/3 of the seats at the 94,000-seat Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum remained unsold, as many people grumbled that the $12 ticket price (about $92 in today’s money) was excessive and refused to cough up the required funds. And just how impressive was that first halftime show compared to the budget-busting, jaw-dropping extravaganzas we have come to expect now? Judge for yourself. Two men, who each wore hydrogen-peroxide-propelled jetpacks (technically termed “rocket belts”) flew around the field — barely off the ground — to show what future travel could look like someday. Two college marching bands paraded. Trumpeter Al Hirt performed. Ten thousand balloons went airborne. So did 300 pigeons, one of which left a deposit on the typewriter of young sportscaster Brent Musburger. In that initial contest, by the way, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers walloped the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs 35-10, and Green Bay quarterback legend Bart Starr was named MVP. 50+

Burn Awareness Week Tips urn injuries continue to be one of the leading causes of unintentional death and injury in the United States, according to the American Burn Association. Burn Awareness Week (February 2-8, 2020) is the ideal time to share these tips from First Alert (www.firstalert.com) to help you keep children, and yourselves, safe from devastating burn injuries.

B

In the Kitchen: Cook on back burners when young children are present, and keep all pot handles turned back, away from the stove edge. During mealtime, place hot items in the center of the table, at least 10 inches from the edge. If toddlers are present, use non-slip placemats instead of tablecloths. Be aware of all items near the stove. Common objects like dish towels, oven mitts and electrical cords can easily catch fire if near a hot burner or flame. Keep fire extinguishers close at hand, and know how to use them. If you aren’t confident using conventional home fire extinguishers, consider the First Alert EZ Fire Spray, which offers an easy-touse (just point and spray) and easy-to-store alternative. All Rooms: Test smoke alarms at least once every month, and replace the batteries every six months. moke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. To eliminate battery replacements, install smoke alarms equipped with 10-year sealed batteries, which feature a lithium battery that lasts the life of the alarm. All alarm models should still be tested monthly. Keep all appliance cords – especially for items such as irons – coiled and away from counter edges. Establish a “kid zone” away from high traffic areas near the stove, cords and appliances where children can safely play and still be supervised. 50+

Q: I had been widowed for 18 years, and Moe was divorced for 12 years when we each took a chance at speed dating. He was the last man out of 13 to sit at my table. He told me he liked to play golf, and I was super pleased to hear this! A man with friends, a passion, and he wasn’t broke! Moe impressed me as a fine gentleman with a kind heart and a level head. We are in sync. We wed this past year after two years of dating. We are both so thankful to have found one another, and we will hold hands and hearts together into our twilight years. — Olga and Moe Scherman

How and when did you meet your valentine? My friend Marleen Schuss, who knew Jim Mango for many years, suggested he join us for dinner, along with her boyfriend, Bob Geltman. As Jim exited his front door, he was wearing sunglasses and using a cane. He approached the car and said “Hi! I’m your blind date!” I love that sense of humor. We learned we had a lot in common, and we were married in May 2002. He’s proud to say he gained a wonderful family and a huge group of wonderful friends. We’ve traveled to many places together, and we love each other very much and look forward to many happy healthy years together. Our motto is “Live, Love, Laugh!” — Marie and Jim Mango

We met on a cruise ship fairly recently, and we got along right away. He was the dance host on the cruise, and our relationship was like the movie “Dirty Dancing.” I was sitting in the corner, like “Baby” and he asked me to dance. I said, “you’re a great dancer, haven’t women thrown themselves at you all these years?” And he said no, and I replied, “Well, let me be the first!’ We weren’t allowed to show affection during the cruise, but we continued our relationship on dry land. We’re going to a Broadway show for my birthday, and a ballroom dance event in the spring. The dance will continue! — Phyllis Bogart and Marty Mulligan

new law expanding nursing home reporting requirements, quality oversight, and financial transparency was signed by Governor Cuomo on December 16, 2019. The new law: • Requires nursing home employees and contractors to report all types of abuse of residents to the Health Department. The current law is limited to just physical abuse. The bill also adds reporting requirements in the event of theft from residents; • Authorizes appointment of independent quality monitors to ensure that facilities comply with written corrective plans; • Requires disclosure to DOH of any co-ownership or familial ties between the nursing home operator and anyone providing services to the nursing home; • Requires facilities to provide prospective residents with residency agreement terms, including posting residency agreements on their websites; • Requires 90-day notice to the Department in the event of sale of nursing home properties and authorizes State recoupment of some Medicaid payments if a facility is sold to be used for purposes other than providing health care. 50+

assau County Executive Laura Curran announced a year-long series of programs, observances, and tributes in coordination with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, Nassau County Department of Veterans Affairs, the Cradle of Aviation, Museum of American Armor, and the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center. Surrounded by armor, aircraft and artifacts from what Curran described as “a conflict that continues to define our nation and the world around us,” she introduced Nassau County’s year-long observance to include interactive events, retrospectives, tributes, and increasingly-relevant educational programs related to World War II, the Holocaust, Veterans affairs, and Long Island’s role during that era. A photographic essay of Long Island during World War II will be installed inside the County Center in Mineola. To mark the end of the war in Europe (VE Day) a public reception will be held at the Cradle in May that features music from a period Big Band, swing dancing and an armor parade with tanks from the Museum of American Armor. The Armor Museum will be hosting World War II Encampment weekend June 13 and 14 on the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center of Nassau County will present retrospectives focusing on remaining Holocaust survivors from Long Island. 50+

Queen 2020 Nancy Witter

Queening 2020 It’s a new year, and a new decade, so welcome and happy 2020! I have no idea what is in store for me as Queen this year, but I know I’m going to do my best to shine a spotlight on Ms. New York Senior America, our great organization. The first thing I did in 2020 was to appear on ABC's Rachael Ray Show on January 7 along with Ms. Senior America 2019, Queen Esmerelda Hetrick, and first runner-up Sherri McGhie. The person who made this happen is the administrator for Pennsylvania Senior America, Denise Russo-Caiazzo. After the pageant, she sent out a press release to several morning shows and media outlets and the one who answered the bell was Rachael Ray. Rachael loved the idea of Senior America and wanted to feature us on her show. Kudos to Denise! For the segment, the three of us were asked to share our “Senior Tips” with the audience. The show sent a film crew to each of our homes for our intro video. They asked me if I could be interactive with Rachael. So … my tips involved improving balance and control and fall prevention. I chose to demonstrate how to get up off the floor in case of a fall. Of course, I had to go to the lost and found to see if I could find my dignity afterwards! It was so much fun playing with Rachael and being able to give a useful tip in a fun way. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can see the entire segment on Hulu or on Rachael’s website. My portion is on my YouTube Channel “Nancy Witter in It’s Good To Be The Queen.” While you’re there it would be great if you would subscribe to my channel. All my new videos regarding Queening will be uploaded there.

the power of wisdom and friendship, are essential to our happiness as we grow older. My motto is “Just Say YES!” Of course, the most important part of New York Senior America is giving back to the community by entertaining seniors and veterans. TThe more people know about this, the more quality contestants and new members we will attract! So, my goal is to fill up my schedule with local appearances. Finally, I am looking forward to making more funny, informative videos regarding senior health tips, financial tips, travel tips, etc. They will all be uploaded to my YouTube channel. I will always share them to Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. I will also be starting a blog on my website www.HotFlashLaughs.com. I couldn’t be prouder to be in a sorority of sisters who do so much, have such fun, are so generous of spirit, and who embrace the kind of camaraderie that gives new meaning to the word friendship. 50+ Happy 2020 Everyone! My very best to all, Queen Nancy COUPON

Marlene Schuss has informed me that after the Rachael Ray episode aired we've had inquiries from a few potential contestants. They probably think if you become a Queen you get to go on Rachael Ray… and they might be right! This may become an annual segment. I myself met two potential contestants even before Rachael Ray just by wearing the crown. Next on my radar is to try to secure a spot in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade for me and fellow Ms. Senior America members. I think it’s time that senior women are represented in this great event. I have a few political contacts who I have reached out to and if it doesn’t work out this year we’ll keep trying. No matter what, we’ll hopefully be in smaller parades and make a splash on social media. In addition, I will do my best in the next remaining months to use the power of the sash to engage with women over 60. It is so important to reach out to our senior community and encourage them to get out of their comfort zones. Making new relationships, becoming and remaining social, and knowing
