The Writing Bug By Sharon Pape
I
must have been born with the writing bug. I wrote my first story “Wild Horse Valley,” at the age of six. I drew a cover for it and showed it to my teacher, who showed it to the school librarian, who put it on display. Talk about positive reinforcement! Ever since then, writing has played a part in my life, whether it was my first attempt at a novel in seventh grade, or the little plays I wrote for my friends to perform for our families and neighbors, or the poetry I wrote in high school and college. As an adult, my writing had two distinct stages. Back in the dark ages before computers, I had three paranormal books published. The first of them was condensed by Redbook Magazine, the first paperback original they had ever condensed. It was then, at the age of 45, that life brought me the unexpected and terrifying challenge of breast cancer. After treatment I wanted to help others who had received the same diagnosis. I volunteered for the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program and went on to become the

program's coordinator for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. Several years later, along with my surgical oncologist and two other survivors, I started a not-forprofit organization to provide information and peer support to those newly diagnosed with the disease. Once the organization didn't require as much of my time, the writing bug lured me back to my first love. During this second stage of my career, I’ve been drawn to writing cozy mysteries with a light paranormal twist and a splash of humor. Sharon Pape and My first series, A Porher book Magickal trait of Crime, reMystery Lore volves around a police sketch artist who solves murder cases with the ghost of a federal marshal from the old Arizona Territories. In the second series, the Abracadabra Mysteries, a sorceress descended from Merlin has a knack for solving murder cases. When magickal spells go awry, an elderly Merlin is transported through time and space to her magick shop, where he causes more than a little havoc in her life. I can’t imagine my life without this writing bug and that’s a good thing, because I think it’s here to stay. 50+

Q: Of course, I want my family and I to be happy and healthy. And I’d also like to be cast as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” on Broadway, get a one-hour comedy special on Comedy Central, perform a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, and write $2 million in shipping business! — Les Degen, Salesman/Singer/ Comedian
I have some personal issues to address, and I think this will be the year that I’ll find my truth. I’ll find new ways to move forward in my life, professionally and personally. I’d love to finish the children’s book I’ve been working on. 2020 will be the year I’ll finally see clearly! — Linda Bakal, Medical Receptionist
Readers Spotlight By Mary Malloy
“What do you hope to accomplish in 2020?” As I look ahead to 2020, I see great things happening and I wish success and good health to my family and friends, and I’m committed to making that happen for them through my loyalty, laughter and music! — Tony Garofalo, owner, Strawberry Fields Band and 89 North Music Venue
Health, prosperity and happiness are the foundations for what I hope to accomplish in 2020. I also hope to have continued success and growth with my photography. Landscapes and seascapes are my passion, but I’m excited to branch out into different sectors in the photography world. — Scott Ferrone, Photographer/Sales and Marketing
As the new president of the Ms. New York Senior America’s Cameo Club, I hope to take it to new levels, and to inspire as many women who have reached the “age of elegance” as I can. As president of Animal Lifeline, I hope to save as many of our four-legged friends as I can. — Dolores Hofman, Program Manager, ASDO JFK Airport
I hope to stay on top of my health, and get serious about getting rid of the accumulated junk at home – and in my mind! I’d like to keep photographing birds and other wildlife, and travel to either Egypt, Volcano National Park in Hawaii, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park in Montana, Ireland or Sicily/Calabria. — John O’Connell, Editor/Freelance Photographer/Writer

Suffolk County Community College Named a 2020 Best for Vets College Military Times has named Suffolk County Community College (SCCC)a “Best for Vets” college in its 2020 rankings. In their tenth year, the rankings are based on the results of Military Times’ annual survey — the most comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement — as well as a detailed review of public data collected by federal agencies. Military Times’ annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey asks colleges and universities to disclose academic outcome and input data, describe many aspects of veteran culture on campus and meticulously document a wide array of services, special policies, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties. Military Times also factors in data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments, as well as Education Department sources. Suffolk County Community College provides a Veterans Resource Center on each of its three campuses staffed by experts that are knowledgeable about a variety of military and veteran education benefits. The college also provides courses on base at the 106th Air Rescue Wing in Westhampton Beach that allows active duty military members to earn their Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree. The full rankings are available at: rebootcamp.militarytimes.com/.
