l Niño finally arrived in late February, but the strong winds and rain sure didn’t dampen the spirits of The SFYC membership. The Club has been buzzing with activities, and SFYC members have been posting strong racing results and earning cruising kudos on the bay and around the country.
E
Several members took first place in their divisions in the Corinthian Mid-Winters including Hank Easom (Yucca), Nick Gibbens (Shenanigans), Richard & Mark Pearce (Bolero) and Glenn Isaacson (Q). Earning 2nd place in their divisions were Tim Russell (Pain Killer), Laurence Pulgram (Magic), Cameron McCloskey (Big Shot) and Ron Roberts (Sea Ghost). And Richard VonEhrenkrook (Can O’Whoopass) took 3rd place in his division. Yucca, Q & Shenanigans also won the three-boat-yacht-club-challenge trophy, the Aotea Cup, which now belongs to The SFYC. Hank Easom (Yucca) also took top honors and the series win at The Golden Gate Yacht Club’s Manual Fagundes Seaweed Soup Regatta. It was great to be onboard Yucca for the final race. Over on the East Coast, SFYC Member Liam Kilroy took top honors at the 2015/16 Melges 20 Miami Winter Series, and received the award for Best Helm Under 21. Reigning World Champion John Kilroy, finished second overall and was also awarded the Top Master (Over 60). In international waters, Ashley Perrin scored the bullet in the Miami to Havana Race (as well as an engagement ring while delivering the boat). And then there’s this: The Cruising Club of America (CCA) selected SFYC Member John E. Sanford to receive its 2015 Richard S. Nye Award. Established in 1978, the award recognizes a CCA member “who has brought distinction to the Club by meritorious service, outstanding seamanship, outstanding performance in long-distance cruising or racing, statesmanship in the affairs of international racing, or any combination of the above.” Sanford was cited for his meritorious service to the Cruising Club of America and the San Francisco Station over a 34-year period. Congratulations John (see page 13 for photos)! Off the water, several events have kept The Club a lively place to be, including two great crab feasts, a Mardi Gras Party, the Father Daughter Dance, and St. Patrick’s Day and Easter festivities. Special thanks to the Auxiliary and Entertainment Committees for their hard work putting these together. Hopefully, you were able to catch the first SFYC Expressions Member Art & Talent event, hosted by member Peter Engler. In addition, our Club Speaker Series have been very well attended with great speakers covering a range of topics, from Dave Olson’s speech on restoring the yacht Acania, to Dave Perry’s sage insights into racing tactics, to Admiral James Ellis’ discussion on the navel build up in the South China Sea. Together, these events really highlight the incredible talent pool of our membership, as well as the need for a new Regatta Center so more members can attend. Speaking of the Regatta Center, the plans are currently with the City of Belvedere and will be heading to the Planning Commission soon. We’ll hold a special membership meeting in late April or early May to discuss the status of the project in more detail, including costs, design and the current proposed timeline. This has been a long process, but one well worth pursuing to completion. Stay tuned! I also want to take this opportunity to welcome our new members. As our General Manager Steve DePetro says, “We are a private club, but one of the most welcoming private clubs (he has) ever worked with.” I could not agree more. The Club recently launched a new program to welcome new members by placing a green flag at their table for the first year of membership. If you see a green flag at a table stop and introduce yourself to your new best friend. With Spring here and Opening Day just around the corner, I look forward to seeing you all at The Club. Smooth Sailing! Ed Lynch, Commodore The San Francisco Yacht Club

he SFYC Auxiliary’s Easter Bunny did not disappoint this year! The bunny, egg hunt, petting zoo and magician were a winning combination with kids and their families. Many thanks for the tireless hours everyone put into making this Club tradition a success. The magical Alice in Wonderland theme created by Co-Chairs Paige Brooks, Stephanie Portillo and Andrina Welter will be remembered with great fondness. Next up – Opening Day on the Bay on April 24. In addition to boat parades and pageantry, Opening Day kicks off the Auxiliary’s season of fundraising – a crescendo leading up to our annual fundraiser in September (quick teaser: this year’s theme is California Dreamin’). Participation in the event and raffle ticket sales are a major source of funding for Club events and extras we all enjoy, and they also provide extra financial support to Youth Sailing. boats at the guest dock a total of ten (10) calendar days per month without charge.
he Harbor Committee is “test driving” a temporary guest dock rule to make it easier for members with boats on dry dock to participate in multi-day races or regattas The Club is sponsoring. Under this temporary rule, members with boats on the dry dock would be able to tie their boats up at the guest dock for a total of 10 days each month, without charge. For example, members with boats on the dry dock might launch their boats for a multi-day regatta on a Thursday or Friday and be able to keep their boat at the guest dock until Monday – as long as they hadn’t exceeded 10 days on the guest dock during a calendar month. In addition to the benefits to these members, this temporary rule will help prolong the life span of our hoists.
T
New Harbor Rules are now available on the Website and will be in the new Membership Directory.
e. No Member shall tie his/her boat up at the Guest Dock for any single use period lasting more than five (5) consecutive days. After expiration of the fifth (5th) consecutive day of any usage period, such Member will be charged the greater of (A) $0.50 per boat foot per day, or (B) $15.00 per day, for the privilege of tying up at the guest dock. f. No Member shall tie up his/her boat at the guest dock for longer than ten (10) calendar days per month. After expiration of the tenth (10th) calendar day of any one (1) month, the Member must remove his/her boat from the guest dock. Boats left at the guest dock more than ten (10) total calendar days per month will be assessed a daily fee equal to 200% of the daily fee specified in Section “e” of this Rule until the boat is moved.
Here are the details of the temporary rule:
b. This Rule is for those Members with boats stored on the Dry Dock only. All other Club Members must adhere to the Guest Dock Rule, as currently written in the Harbor Rules and Regulations.
h. The usage of the Guest Dock for all other members will remain unchanged from the current Harbor Rules and Regulations.
c. Members using this temporary Rule are required to sign in their boat at the register located in The SFYC front office, or at the bar during times when the front office is closed.
This temporary Rule was initiated by Commodore Ed Lynch and was unanimously agreed to by the Harbor Committee. After December 31, 2016, the Harbor Committee will reevaluate this Rule.

iam Kilroy, the 2015 Melges 20 PCCs champion and third-place finisher at the Worlds at The SFYC, has put together an impressive series win at the Melges 20 Miami Winter Series. The series of three regattas is attended by top teams from across the country, along with some international boats. Liam, a 12-year-old 6th grader at San Domenico Middle School, and his Wildman team dominated them all. With a series score of 1-1-2, he never even let his dad, John, beat him. John’s Samba Pa Ti is the 2015 World Champion, but he has noted that there’s nothing better than getting beaten by his son. In Miami’s variable conditions, the constant performance by Wildman only allowed Samba Pa Ti second place overall in the series. Congratulations to both Kilroys for more outstanding sailing in the Melges 20 class. Both boats are featured in the photos behind The Club bar for 2016.

The safety courses fill up fast each spring and fall, because they are now required for sailors wishing to race off shore. The most recent addition is a Celestial Navigation course. While we have become accustomed to using GPS for pretty much all of our current navigation needs, this course fully trains participants in the use of sextants and other important tools and skills. ISAF Youth Worlds By Romain Screve
n January, Romain and his crew from Southern California traveled to Malaysia to compete in the ISAF Youth Worlds regatta as the U.S. representative in the 29er class. The following is an excerpt from his report. Congratulations to Romain for showing the world they were the best in the stuff they trained so hard for, and for a great overall result. The SFYC is proud to support competition at this level. “Youth Worlds was both disappointing but reassuring at the same time. Beforehand, Quinn and I set a goal for Gold. A professional forecaster conducted a study on Langkawi, Malaysia and came with results of 8-12 kts wind, 85 percent of the time – and in previous championships it had been labeled a “light air” venue. So, to win Gold, we trained ourselves to be
I
undefeatable in the light stuff. We focused on medium- to light-wind technique, and kept our weight light at 245 pounds. Upon arriving to Malaysia, the forecast appeared a bit stronger than usual. The first day of racing was medium breeze with 1015 kts, but we hung on and came out tied for first place. The second, third, and fourth days, the wind built and blew steady 20 kts, day and night. Like us, many teams were caught off guard and struggled to compete with the larger teams. We dropped to ninth place before the last day, rendering us mentality and physically depleted. The last day was light, but we only had one race, which we won. Winning the first and last days reassured us that our training would have paid off in lighter breeze, and that it was not all for nothing.”
he SFYC has been selected to host this year’s Optimist U.S. National Team Trials, April 19-22. The regatta – open only to sailors who’ve pre-qualified – is the most important Optimist regatta of the year. There’s a lot at stake, because the results from these team trials are used to select Team USA for the World Championship, North American Championship, European Championship, British Nationals, and other major Optimist championships this summer. We hope you’ll join us in congratulating The SFYC sailors who qualified for the regatta, including: Connor Bennett Henry Boeger Simon Boeger Will Foox Ben Foox Chloe Holder Sydney Holder Johnny Perkins David Spector Sarah Young Justin Lim SFYC Head Coach: Nico Winograd
be one of the biggest and best in the country. We currently have 75 Optimists on our dock and 45 kids on our racing team. We can expect a lot of action here for the team trials in April, with ~200 Optimists, ~50 coach boats, plus sailors’ parents and siblings. This event will require many volunteers both shore-side and on the water so please let the race office or youth office know if you can volunteer in any way! The race days are April 19-22, but many teams will be arriving well beforehand to practice and get ready for this major championship. As a result, the south half of The Club parking lot will be full of Optis and charter trailers from April 8-22. While we hope you’ll come down to share in the excitement and buzz, please be aware that parking will be tight for that period of time. These are some of the best sailors in the country, regardless of their young age. They are here to race hard on the Berkeley Circle. If you can get out on the water on regatta days, head down the straits and towards the east bay to find the gigantic swarm of little white sails and support boats. SFYC Youth Sailing is excited to be the heart of Opti racing on the west coast. Good luck, Team SFYC!

Remembering Lee Otterson By Joan Linn Bekins
ee, an active SFYC member since 1973, passed away December 22, 2015. He is well remembered as a patron of four competitive racing sailboats that flew the SFYC burgee over fourteen years. Many of The Club’s best sailors contributed to the success of the boats, mainly skippered by Ray Pingree. A Cal 33, Sea Sprite, brought Lee and Ray Pingree together in 1973, when Lee purchased the boat from John Beery for the La Paz race. They became fast friends and finished second in this race. Ray wrote: “After showing Lee the plans for a new Serendipity 43 design, he asked me if I thought we could win with her and I said ‘yes.’ He then wrote me a check for the total boat price and said ‘make her go.’ We named her Sioc in honor of the chief of the Colusa tribe of Native American Indians who lived near the rice fields and home where Lee lived for many years. Sioc was successful in many local and offshore races from 1980 to 1982, including two first-place finishes in the Danforth series. “The next boat was a Nelson-Marek designed Serendipity 41, named Clockwork because of Lee’s indispensable use of the
L
clock on every race, keeping meticulous track of handicaps and position of the boat at all times, while I was at the helm. Lee always did an amazing job. “One time we were coming home under the Golden Gate Bridge from the Farallons, with all our sails up. A severe gust of wind hit and we broached, taking out the rig and sending me overboard. A large hand reached down and plucked me out of the water. It was Lee telling me that I had best stay on board!” Three days after the new rig was in place, Clockwork won the Big Boat Series, and again, two years later, in 1984. The boat was a part of many offshore and local Bay races, where it posted strong results. It won Long Beach Race Week, and took first place in the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy race in 1984, and second place in 1985. Now three years old, the orange boat was still “the boat to beat.” Later, Lee took delivery of a 40’ one tonner, Skedaddle, designed by Reichel/Pugh. Team Otterson-Pingree and their crew performed well in 1987, finishing in the top of the fleet in the One Ton World Cup in SF Bay. The boat then placed second in their class in the St. Francis Big

Boat Series and first in the Danforth IOR. Skedaddle was recruited in 1987 to represent The SFYC in the annual San Francisco Cup Race against the St. Francis Yacht Club. Don Jesberg skippered the boat with a crew of Ray Pingree, Steve Taft, Jeff Madrigali, Duncan Kelso, Bill Barton, S/C Tad Lacey, Jock MacLean, and Steven Jesberg. Bravura from “the other club” won, in spite of our superb crew’s noble efforts. Lee kept an eye on his boats from his Corinthian Island home overlooking Belvedere Cove and The SFYC. His 6’5“ frame was a familiar one at The Club. He was a close friend and mentor to Laurence Bekins and became a partner in the Cal 28-2, Moxie. Lee’s grandchildren sailed on the boat on many SFYC-hosted regattas. A talented, generous, extraordinary man of integrity, endurance, and honed skills, Lee flew his PBY amphibian seaplane around the world in nineteen months, but that’s another story…
With my thanks to Staff Commodore Ken Frost and Jane Frost, whose wellorganized SFYC archives contributed to this story.
