Junior Golf
Providing Junior Members access to the game of golf through a program that builds character values, offers a fun and safe experience and instills confidence through personal achievement. Children and grandchildren of Members, ages 6-12 are eligible to participate. Students are grouped using a colored hat system. Each hat level has a specific curriculum designed to teach students the basic elements of the full swing, short game, putting, rules and etiquette. There are three, five-week sessions offered. Class meets once per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Red Hats Class time: 4:00-5:00pm Proprietary: $175 per session YP & Social: $225 per session Blue/Black Hats Class time: 4:00-6:00pm Proprietary: $250 per session YP & Social: $300 per session Session

CLASS LEVELS Red Hats (Ages 6-8) • Entry level class with basic elements of golf. • Includes, but not limited to, grip, posture, balance, basic golf terminology, rules, etiquette and safety. • No testing required to participate. Red & White Hats (Ages 6-8) • Second level of instruction for the beginning golfer. • Students must pass the Red Hat test or be evaluated and approved by Golf Shop staff to be eligible. Blue Hats (Ages 6-10) • Reinforces the instructional content of the Red Hat group. • Delves into additional basic/intermediate concepts and aspects of golf. • Students are required to pass the Red & White Hat test to advance to the Blue Hat level or be evaluated and approved by Golf Shop Staff Blue & White Hats (Ages 8-12) • Designed for intermediate junior golfers with a functional knowledge of basic golf swing concepts, rules & etiquette. • Focus is getting students “golf course ready”. • Students will begin to use the knowledge learned previously to successfully play golf with less supervision. • Intermediate concepts are introduced such as the rules of golf, pace of play, cause and effect and golf course etiquette. • Students are required to pass the Blue Hat test as well as submit three signed 9-hole scorecards from any Blue PGA/ U.S. Kids Family Tees from any golf course to participate in the Blue/White Hat class or be evaluated and approved by Golf Shop staff. Black Hats (Ages 8-12) • For intermediate/advanced junior golfers. • Ideally, students at this level are playing, following and practicing golf regularly on their own. • Building on the foundation of previous classes, instruction delves deeper into intermediate/advanced golf concepts. Course management and strategy introduced enabling students to obtain lower scores. • More individualized and specific to each student’s needs. Selfreliance and independence is strongly emphasized. • Black Hat students should have the ability to play golf under adult supervision within the pace of play guidelines. • Students wishing to enroll are required to pass the Blue & White Hat test, establish USGA GHIN number as well as submit three signed 9-hole scorecards with a score lower than 45 from any Blue PGA/ U.S. Kids Family Tees from any golf course or be evaluated and approved by Golf Shop staff. Black & White Hats (Ages 10-12) • Designed for advanced/ competitive junior golfers who have made golf a priority and seeking to continually improve and advance. • Main focus is lowering scores and preparing for competitive golf. • Ideally, this golfer has the desire to successfully compete in junior golf association tournaments as well as our own Junior Club Team (travel team). • Little supervision should be required and students should have a better than average concept of all aspects related to the game. • Students wishing to enroll are required to pass the Black Hat test, have a USGA index of 30.0 or lower and submit 9 scorecards from any USGA rate tees from any golf course or be evaluated and approved by Golf Shop staff. 3 | Family Guide 2018
SUMMER GOLF CAMPS For students who may be on vacation for much of the summer or cannot commit to a 5-week Junior Golf session, we are offering four one-week summer camps. All the instruction that is normally spread out over five weeks will be condensed into three, two-hour classes on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 3-5pm. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to play a few holes on the course on Friday afternoon at the end of the camp. Golf Camp 1: Tuesday, July 17 to Friday, July 20 Golf Camp 2: Tuesday, July 24 to Friday, July 27 Golf Camp 3: Tuesday, July 31 to Friday, August 3 Golf Camp 4: Tuesday, August 7 to Friday, August 10 Summer Golf Camps are only available for the Blue Hats or higher due to the length of the camps and the intensity of the instruction schedule. Depending on instructor availability, the capacity for each week will be 12 students. Placement in the Summer Golf Camps will be a lottery system. Parents will prioritize which weeks they prefer when registering for the Junior Golf Program in March; each student will be guaranteed admission into at least one week of camp. Parent Child Tournament & Dinner Sunday, September 16 The Parent Child Tournament is a fun way for juniors and parents to compete in a tournament together in an alternate shot format. Students in the Red and Red & White Hat levels play 3 holes. Students in the Blue and Blue & White levels play 6 holes. The competition takes place on the Front 9 from the Gold Junior Tees starting at 4:00pm. Dinner is provided for all participants following play and prizes and awards are distributed as well. 5 | Family Guide 2018
COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS Bay Cities Junior Golf Team Palo Alto Hills is part of the Bay Cities League of Junior Golfers, the premier junior golf league in the nation. The league has offered a competitive atmosphere for Bay Area junior golfers since 1967. Our Club plays against teams from Los Altos, Saratoga, La Rinconada, Silver Creek Valley, Almaden and Pasatiempo golf clubs. The team is open to all junior golfers from all membership types that meet the following criteria: • • • • • • • •
Must have the ability to walk 18 holes Must be able to play from the Men’s or Women’s Tees Must have “better than average” knowledge of the rules of golf Enjoy playing in a competitive atmosphere Must have the ability to shoot less than 100 for 18 holes Can handle themselves properly on the golf course with little supervision Must be available to play every Saturday during June and July Will not reach the age of 21 before January 1, 2018
The roster to participate in the matches is determined by qualifying scores and is updated regularly throughout the season. Qualifying for the ladder begins in April and matches start at the beginning of June. The Top 8 available players on the ladder will be in the starting lineup and we can bring up to 4 additional players to each match. The cost to participate is $100 and includes a team uniform and lunch for each match. Please contact Joe Dolby (jdolby@pahgcc.net) for any additional information. PGA Junior League Team A new program for Junior Golfers at the Blue & White Hat level or higher who are able to play 9 holes independently. The program includes classes and matches against other Bay Area clubs and teams. Classes are weekly, 60 minutes in length and consist of learning one specific skill and then testing it in a fun competition with the other students. The official season runs April through July. Junior Tennis
The Palo Alto Hills Junior Tennis program offers two tennis professionals, Bob Jaeger & Eric Barry. Their efforts focus on technique development when introducing or improving this lifelong sport to children of all levels. The junior program is categorized by age and level of play. Please use the chart to find the appropriate class. If you have any questions, please contact the Acqua Spa & Fitness desk at 650-917-5141. After School Tennis: Spring & Fall Spring: April 3 - May 24 Fall: Sep 11  - Nov 1 Eric Barry is on the court in this after school program. CLASS LEVELS Little Aces (Ages 4-5) Red Ball, 36’ Service Line Court An energetic and fun 30 minute class that introduces children to the game of tennis. This class is for the very young to start developing hand eye coordination using tennis related drills and games. Bronze (Ages 6-8) Orange Ball, 36’ Service Line Court Focus on the fundamentals using basic drills and games. Major emphasis will be on forehand and backhand ground strokes along with the service motion. Scoring will be introduced. Softer balls and smaller court sizes will be used. Eight year olds may pick Bronze or Silver level depending on their physical size, prior tennis experience and level of coordination. Silver (Ages 9-10) Green Dot Ball, 60’ Blue Line Court For beginning and intermediate level players to continue the fundamentals with drills and basic match play. Forehand and backhand ground strokes, serve, some spinning of the ball and net play are regular components of this class. Fun games and match play will close out each lesson. Gold (Ages 11 & Up) Yellow Ball, 78’ Full Court For beginning and intermediate level players. Class will cover all areas of the game including first & second serves, topspin ground strokes and net play. Point situation drills will be used in addition to lots of minutes pounding balls off the ball machine to groove strokes. Fun games and match play will close out each lesson.

Sharks Swim Team
Children and grandchildren of Members are eligible for year-round Junior Swim Program. Participants learn a life-long skill while making unforgettable memories and long-lasting friendships! SUMMER SEASON High season for Sharks includes regular practices, weekly meets, team-bonding events and more. During practices, swimmers devote time to technique of all four swim strokes and work on speed and endurance. Pasta Feeds after Friday practices are a great way for swimmers to socialize and get psyched for the swim meets. After each meet, we have a tradition of BBQing at our home pool where families can bring their own food to grill or order poolside! YEAR ROUND PRACTICE Sharks swim year-round! Spring and fall practices offer an opportunity to stay in shape and work on different skills in a smaller group setting. Winter Stroke Clinics January 23 & 25 Brave the cold to work on stroke technique and improve swimming efficiency. All ages welcome! Clinic held Tuesday and/or Thursday, 4:00 - 5:00pm. JUNIOR ADULTS SWIM LESSONS Swim lessons are available year round for children and adults of all ages and abilities. Whether it is your child’s first time swimming on their own, you want to master the butterfly or you are training for a triathlon, our qualified instructors can help reach goals while having fun! Recurring Programs KIDZ NIGHT OUT You get a date night, your kids have a blast. Deal? Sometimes parents just need an evening to themselves! For a stress-free date and a fun time for the kids, take your brood to a Kidz Night Out. They’ll be highly entertained, fed and worn right out while you sneak off for dinner, a workout or a massage at the Club. First Friday of most months! BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION Sunday, February 4 9:00am - 4:00pm Saturday, September 22, 9:00am - 4:00pm For Tween and Teens, ages 11-15, to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for infants and children. This 6.5 hour Red Cross training course will help participants to develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business and keep themselves and others safe. Participants will also learn about basic child care and basic first aid. BIRTHDAY CLUB We love birthdays at Palo Alto Hills and we’d be honored to be part of your child or grandchild’s celebration! Enroll up to five children ages 1-12, and we’ll make sure you have an evening to remember. • Sign up for the Birthday Club by emailing Melanie: mcarlsen@pahgcc.net • You will receive a birthday certificate, good for 1 complimentary entrée from the Kid’s Menu on any dinner service evening during the birthday month. • Please make a reservation for dinner as the kitchen will prepare a special dessert for all to enjoy!

Players are divided into teams and equipped with at least one light. Then prepare to explore PAH on a treasure hunt with clues to be done in the dark!

APRIL Family Easter Brunch Sunday, April 1 Spring has sprung at PAH which means it’s time for our annual Easter Brunch complete with an outstanding buffet, petting zoo and egg hunts that the whole family can enjoy. Paint Night Friday, April 27 PAH will provide a talented and charismatic artist to lead the painting portion of the event. Through stepby-step instruction, each guest will create their very own painting to take home with them along with memories from a fabulous event!

JULY End of Season Awards Dinner Sunday, July 15 Join us to help celebrate another great summer for the Sharks. We’ll finish the season with an awesome pool deck party after our last meet of the season. Dinner, dancing and awards are all included in this celebration of our beloved Sharks. Junior Golf Camps Four one-week summer camps for Blue Hats or higher. All the instruction that is normally spread out over five weeks will be condensed into three, twohour classes on Tuesday-Thursday from 3-5pm plus play a few holes on the course on Friday afternoons.

SEPTEMBER Parent Child Tournament & Dinner Sunday, September 16 Juniors and parents compete together in an alternate shot format. Students in the Red and Red & White Hat levels play 3 holes. Students in the Blue and Blue & White levels play 6 holes. The competition takes place on the Front 9 from the Gold Junior Tees. Dinner is provided for all participants following play with prizes and awards. Babysitting Certification Saturday, September 22, 9am - 4pm For Tween and Teens, ages 11-15, to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for infants and children. This 6.5 hour Red Cross training course will help participants to develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business and keep themselves and others safe. Participants will also learn about basic child care and basic first aid.

OCTOBER Costume Laser Tag & Video Game Truck Friday, October 26 We’re combining 2 popular events into 1! The underground garage transforms into a laser tag haven of obstacles with the Game Truck parked nearby. Wear your Halloween Costumes, bring friends and join us for the fun! Halloween Family Fair Sunday, October 28 Nonstop food and fun at the PAH fairgrounds! The Clubhouse and pool deck gets a spooky makeover and everyone can enjoy the carnival games, food stations, haunted house, enchantments, pumpkin carving & smashing, jumpy house and more.
