FROM THE RED TEES BY KRISTINE MORRIS Club House construction and development of our temporary greens has begun! Along with this, the WGA has a very busy schedule until the middle of April to get most of our tournaments completed. The first two rounds of our President’s Cup have been played, with the final round to be completed by April 20th. The Winter Eclectic and Club Championship are just around the corner and Team play begins in March. My golf skills always need improvement so I’ll see you on the practice tee!!

EVENTS

UPCOMING EVENTS:

February Meeting Day will be on Tuesday, February 13th. This will be the last day of the WGA Winter Eclectic. There will be an 8:30 shotgun start for golf, followed by lunch and our meeting. Anyone not playing in the tournament may play behind the field, so sign up in the Ladies Lounge, on ForeTees or in the Pro Shop. Please note that the rain date for our Winter Eclectic is Friday, February 16th. The WGA Club Championship will be held on March 6th, 8th and 9th. There will be three days of play for the Championship Flight while the other flight will only play on the 6th and 9th. Please note that our rain date will be on March 13th. Kim Izzi is our defending Champion!

Congratulations go to Lisa Applebee for being December’s Most Improved Golfer of the Month. Her index went from 40.1 to 38.5, a 4% improvement. Well done!

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: Artemio Silva Artemio has been busy preparing the maintenance facility for demolition. Art has done an incredible job relocating several decades worth of accumulated equipment, tools and other miscellaneous items into our temporary facilities. Great job Art!

HEIDI WRIGHTTENNYSON, PGA HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL Hello MVCC! It is with excitement and deep gratitude to write my ‘First Shot’ to you, the Members of Mesa Verde Country Club. I am truly humbled and honored to be selected to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Tom Sargent, an incredible PGA professional and icon in the industry. Collaborating with the Golf Staff and the MVCC management team, I am committed to continuing the professional operation he has established the last 22+ years and providing exceptional member experiences in the years to come. I love GOLF! I fell in love with the game at the age of 10 and have a passion for playing, promoting, and teaching the game to others. After four years of competitive golf as a scholarship athlete at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, I played two winters in Orlando competing on the Central Florida Challenge, a women’s professional golf tour. I have a deep respect for competitive golf and those who pursue playing the game at the highest level. As a teacher and a coach, it is just as thrilling to watch a student perform at the highest level as it is to watch a player of any level shoot their personal best. Similar to Mr. Sargent’s tenure at MVCC, I have spent the last 23+ years as the Director of Golf at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, SC, a George & Tom Fazio 36-hole private, equity community. My tenure was an incredible journey of personal and professional growth. It is a wonderful facility. I am very proud of the golf operations, tournaments, and instruction programs we developed over the last two decades, as well as the wonderful relationships created with the Members. You must be wondering, “why MVCC and why move across the country?”, certainly a fair question! Before moving to Hilton Head Island, I spent five seasons at Inverness Club in Toledo, OH. There I had the good fortune of working under the tutelage of PGA Master Professional, Don Perné. Mr. Perné instilled in me the importance of cherishing a club’s history while staying relevant for current and future Members. Inverness molded my desire to be the lead professional at a premiere 18-hole private, equity country club with great players and a terrific family golf environment. When I received the job notification from PGA CareerLinks for the Head Professional position at MVCC I was very intrigued. After researching the facility, talking with PGA Career Consultant, Ken Ferrell, talking with professional friends familiar with the area, and especially after drilling Mr. Sargent with an hour + of questions (thank you, Sarge!), I knew this was the Club for me! When not at the Club, you will find me on a golf course with my husband, Roger, working out at the gym, refueling myself in a yoga class, taking a hike, traveling, or volunteering my time to the PGA and local organizations. February will be a fast and furious month of getting to know all of you, the staff, becoming familiar with the day to day operations, and reviewing the event schedule. 2018 will be a year of transition with Mr. Sargent retiring and organizing events around the exciting course, clubhouse, and maintenance facility renovations. I look forward to seeing you on the tee, the course, in the Golf Shop, and at the Club. Most importantly I look forward to getting to KNOW you and become a part of the MVCC family! Yours in golf & service, Heidi Wright-Tennyson, PGA “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went” -Will Rogers

FROM THE CHEF:

TENNIS

MEN’S USTA LEAGUE TEAM!

RANDY MYERS HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL

Captain Bob Rourke and Captain Dean Howard have taken on the duties of supervising our USTA Men’s 3.5 level league team! We have 16 guys signed up to play on our team. They will rotate each week throughout the 10 week season! Matches will be at home and away Saturday afternoons starting at 2pm. Our team will field 3 doubles teams and 2 singles competing each week. In other club news our brand new LED tennis lights are getting rave reviews from our members! One member was quoted as saying, “I can finally see the ball clearly.” These lights are state of the art and make a huge difference in night play enjoyment! Finally, our Pac Sun women’s teams have started competing in the 2nd half of their season. Our C3 team is 6 points ahead in first place in their division. Our two D1 teams are in the top third of their divisions and our D3 is right in the middle of the pack. Andy Stewart and I are bringing along quite a few upand-coming juniors, and we hope to launch our Mesa Verde junior team this spring! Randy

Hey Mesa Verde! Have you ever made homemade Marinara? It is easier than you think. Here is the recipe that I have been using for years now and it never lets me down. ¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Cup Diced Carrots 1 Cup Diced Celery 1 Cup Diced Onions 1 Cup Diced Tomatoes 10 Cloves Garlic 10 Sprigs Thyme 1 Bunch Fresh Basil 5 Sprigs Fresh Oregano 3 1# Cans Peeled San Marzano Tomatoes (They are the best, don’t settle) 1 TBSP each Salt and Pepper You want to sauté on low heat the Carrots, Celery, Onions, Tomatoes, and Garlic with the Olive Oil until completely cooked through. This should take about 30 minutes. Remove the Thyme and Oregano Leaves and add to cooked vegetables also adding whole Fresh Basil. Add San Marzano Tomatoes and continue cooking on low for another 20 minutes. Remove from heat and blend all ingredients in a blender. The finishing touch will be the salt and pepper. Remember to taste the sauce and season more if needed. It’s that easy. Enjoy!
