Chartwell Chatter - April 2011

April 2011

s you are aware this year marks the 50th anniversary of Chartwell Golf and Country Club. It is

A

only fitting that we pay tribute to the founder of Chartwell, Al Merritt. Mr. Merritt conceived of

the idea to have a golf course community in Severna Park but was warned by many around him that it might not be a great idea. In the late 50’s and through the 60’s Americans were still filling the suburbs but the idea of a golf course community had not caught on. It was unimaginable that a developer could peel off 200 – 300 acres of a community for a golf course and still be able to make a housing community profitable.

Nonetheless, Mr. Merritt felt the addition of a golf course would add value to the surrounding area and would also bring people in to look at Chartwell. By 1961, the first phase of Chartwell was built as well as the golf course and the clubhouse. Although Mr. Merritt was confident in the success of the community of Chartwell he must have had some reservations…The clubhouse was built as a center hall colonial just in case the country club did not make it and the clubhouse had to be sold as a home! Chartwell has gone through a lot of change over the years and has meant many things to many people. While the clubhouse and the members have changed over the years one thing has remained constant and that is to add value to the community and the lives of the people associated with Chartwell.

As Tad mentioned in the last Chatter, Chef Brian and his wife, Cindy, have decided to go back to California. Chef Brian will certainly be missed. He was able to add a missing element to the kitchen and put together some excellent menus. It is because of Chef Brian we have a solid idea of what we need in the kitchen to make the dining experience a success. Because Chartwell’s new stature as a preeminent dining destination, we have been able to attract many highly qualified and reputable chef resumes from all over the country. We hope to be able to introduce a new chef in the coming weeks.

We also have two of our assistants moving on to better opportunities. The first is Jason Sparhawk, our first golf assistant and all round good guy. He is left on March 9th for Apple Cross Country Club in Downington, Pennsylvania. Jason has a great opportunity at this Jack Nicklaus designed facility and I very much look forward to his continued success. Also,

You have heard me say many times: the success of Chartwell relies on the professionalism and experience of the staff AND the generosity of member volunteers. the Club. Taking advantage of the services and facilities of the Club is why you joined. Visiting the Club as often as possible brings added value to your membership. In addition to dining and playing at the Club, please don’t overlook opportunities to utilize the banquet and meeting areas. Second is the recommendation of the Club. Recommending the club’s banquet facilities is a great way to support your club. And, of course, promoting membership to your friends, colleagues and relatives speak volumes to the greatness of Chartwell. A private prospective member reception is scheduled Friday, April 8th. It is a great opportunity and we wish him the best of luck. Although any business hates to lose hardworking people it is also important for us to be able to create a track record of our top assistants moving on to better positions so that we can recruit the best. Tad and I have spoken many times about hiring assistants for all aspects of the club with a vision of their future. It is good to see two of our hardworking assistants be given great opportunities to move forward.

Bubble Season We are fast approaching our transition into the outdoor season and there are a few important dates that everyone should keep in mind. The last day of the bubble season is May 2. All make up times must be completed by then because weather permitting, the bubble should come down that week. Also, we hope to have our four non bubble courts resurfaced and ready to play by Mid April provided the weather is not consistently freezing or wet over that period of time. Remember, to please wear flat soled tennis shoes only on the har-tru surfacing.

This is my last year on the Board and it has been a pleasant and very interesting journey serving as the Finance Committee Chair, President and now Pool/Tennis Committee Chairman.

One of the more challenging issues in 2011 involves the Strategic Plan. President, Dave Nocar, and Strategic Planning Chair, Mark Brugnoli, have asked the committee chairs to “dust off” and update the 2007 Strategic Planning documents.

Dear Members of Chartwell, There comes a point in everyone’s career were they must move on and continue to grow to achieve ones goals. It is with a heavy heart that I must say farewell to Chartwell and all of its members to pursue a unique opportunity in Downingtown, PA. I have recently accepted a position as the First Assistant Golf Professional, which after a few months will be elevated to the Head Golf Professional, at Applecross Country Club, which is a new Jack Nicklaus design course near the Philadelphia area. What makes this position so unique is that the course opened in July of 2010, making this year the first full year of operation. The potential for this position to boost my career is enormous and I am very excited to take on this endeavor. However, with change does come some sadness. I have been fortunate to make a lot of friends at Chartwell, all of whom will be missed dearly, as well as had the chance to build a relationship with many of you. It is difficult for me to say goodbye to a place that I have called home for the past six years but the time has come for me to start a new chapter in my life.

I have so many thoughts going through my head about the things I need to do before I leave, people I need to see, and those that I wish I had the chance to see one last time. Time has shown that Chartwell is a special place…special because of a membership like you. I will never forget the time I have been fortunate enough to spend with you, nor will I forget all that I have learned. Please accept this letter as my sincere display of appreciation for the opportunities you have given me, as well as the future you have provided me. As you read this letter I have no doubt begun the premoving process and will continue to work at Chartwell until March 9th. After which I will be moving to Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. I hope I get the chance to see you one last time before I leave, but please know…I will always have a special place in my heart for Chartwell and its members. Your Friend, Jason Sparhawk, PGA

TIPS FROM MAINTENANCE Spring is the time of preparing for summer, repairing damages done in winter. As spring is around the corner, it is important to inspect your home from top to bottom and prepare a “to do” list of needed repairs. April is A/C start up time. It is important to visually inspect your outdoor unit. Make sure the coils look clean and that there is not debris blocking airflow. It is always a good idea to schedule your service technician to clean your coils and check pressures before the end of April. “April showers bring May flowers.” Make sure your gutters are clean. Inspect and replace caulk on windows, doors and other penetrations, such as dryer vents and cable wire holes. Inspect the condition of caulking where two different materials meet, for example where wood siding joins the foundation’s walls or at inside corners. Improper caulking provides an avenue for moisture to get inside your walls and cause mold. If you ever need any advice on maintenance issues you can email me at edorn@chartwellgcc.com I look forward to seeing you at the club!!
