Winter 2010 – 2011

irst of all, congratulations to Dave Nocar. He will be a great President for Chartwell, especially in

F

our 50th year. I look forward to working with him. As always, here are my candid comments and

observations. 1.

We have accomplished a lot, but so have all the other former presidents and boards so I need not highlight the specifics.

2.

Thanks to Jace Stirling, Bob Farrow and Richard Ingram—it has been fun working with them. This outgoing class of 2010 has the distinction of working on the dam from beginning to end. Thank you for all of your hard work.

3.

Thanks to Billy Chalmers and his dam committee for all the hard work. It is hard to articulate the number of hours and work involved in completing this project. Thanks again.

4.

Thanks to all the Board Committee Chairs and members that participated in our committee structure. We need as many members as possible supporting the committee efforts. A special thanks to Hayes and Molly Merkert for accepting the role of committee co-chairs for the 50th Anniversary Events.

2011 President David Nocar, Jr.

A few parting thoughts: 1.

I continue to support the 3 year Board term and 1 year president term. This structure allows for many members to participate in the governance of Chartwell. As a member owned club, the more participation and understanding of the club’s business, the better club we have.

2.

The short term nature of the Board term, by definition, requires Tad and his management team to supervise and manage the club.

Chartwell. Like other social clubs, Chartwell relies on the dedication of its members.

Treasurer Finance Chairman Jeff Armiger

The Club continues to thrive because of the consistent participation of its members in the dining room, at social events and in sports groups, tournaments and play. The Club also has a very strong committee structure that ensures continuity, focus and creativity. Thank you to all that provide their time, skill and commitment to the success and future of Chartwell.

Secretary Strategic Planning Chairman Mark Brugnoli

There were four specific 2010 Objectives as determined by the Board. 1. Balance Budget We entered 2010 with a lot of trepidation. 2009 was extremely challenging and

Additionally, the Club reduced its debt by $265,000, bringing the Club’s overall debt down to $7.7 million.

The milestone for the year was certainly the completion of the dam. 2.

Complete the Dam As we all recall, the Mother’s Day weekend storm of 2008 led to catastrophe at the lower pond and a political battled ensued with Anne Arundel County. The

the Club has regained its picturesque signature hole and its critical irrigation source. Over the winter, additional landscaping will be completed. The project was long, tedious and challenging. The Dam committee is to be commended for their many hours of planning, site visits and political negotiations. We would like to particularly appreciate the chairman, past President Bill Chalmers. On November 3, Anne Arundel County filed suit against the Club for reimbursement of their exorbitant $2.5 million expenditure to repair and convert St. Andrews Road from a dam to a cross-over and culvert system. All departments participate in this communication, limiting the number of emails being sent to members. Since its inception in August, “Weekly Message” generates an average 48% open rate and average 21% click through rate. The Club website continues to undergo improvements. The front page is updated at least weekly and other information as needed, but definitely more timely than in the past. A fresh new look is being debuted this month that includes a nonmember area to promote membership and banquets, more member friendly access to the website and a more contemporary look. The importance of communication is obvious. The Club remains committed to this endeavor. As

1 stick butter, melted

1½ lbs sweet sausage

1 lb. shelled cooked chestnut

3 carrots 2 white onions 4 celery stalks

If you can not locate shelled chestnuts or are feeling adventurous, 2 to 2.5 pounds of fresh whole chestnuts will yield about a pound of nut meat. To prepare, heat oven the 400º and cut an X in the top of the nut with a sharp paring knife. Be careful! Place on a sheet pan, into the oven and roast until the skin splits, about 15 – 20 minutes. Allow to cool to touch and peel.

I do not recommend cooking the stuffing in a bird. In order for the stuffing to reach the proper temperature (165º), the meat will over cook and you end with a dry bird. Better to cook them separate.

salt and pepper

10 cloves garlic

Cut bread slices into small cubes and reserve in a large bowl.

In a heavy bottom pan, cook off the sausage and remove from pan when done, leaving the drippings. Once cool, chop the sausage meat coarsely and reserve.

While sausage is cooking, peel the vegetables and cut into large pieces. Using a food processor, chop the veggies until no piece is bigger then a pea.

Add the chopped veggies to the pan and cook slowly, covered until al dente. Add the herbs and cook another 2 – 3 minutes.

Add the sausage, veggies, chestnuts, butter and eggs to the bread, season with a little salt and pepper. Starting with 2 cups of stock, mix well. Add enough stock so the stuffing is moist but not wet. Cook off a little patty to check seasoning and adjust if necessary.

First Annual MSGA Charity Golf Tournament — A Big Success A MSGA charity golf tournament, the first of what is planned as an annual event, was deemed a competitive and financial success at the conclusion of the one-day event at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, October 21. It took a match of cards to determine the winning team, with the nod going to the Chartwell Country Club's Bill Westervelt, David Nocar, Tad Peel, and Jamie Peterson. They combined to shoot a 15-under-par 65-62--127, edging out a group that listed past MSGA presidents Robert Lerner, Robert Sherwood, Jr., and Richard Weitzman, plus course rater Bill Matton, who finished with 64-63--127. Each member of the winning foursome in the net-best-two-ballsof-four format contributed, as Nocar, with the lowest handicap of plus-1, provided a steady influence, while Westervelt, a 21 handicap, helped on 13 holes. Peel, a 33 and getting two strokes on most holes, helped on five, and Peterson, a 12, three holes. Included in the collection were three natural birdies by Nocar and one by Westervelt. The latter birdied the par-3 17th with a stroke for a 1 and Peterson parred it with a stroke for a 2 for a total of three under par on the hole. At the par-5 second, Westervelt and Peel each got two shots and produced a natural par and a bogey, respectively, for a 3-4 and another 3-under total for a hole. For the runnerup entry, the round was highlighted by two birdies from Weitzman, a 4 handicap, and one each from Lerner (11), Sherwood (8), and Matton (6). Third place in the 10-team field went to the team of Tim Dec, Bob Hegel (three birdies), Thomas Whelan, and Terry Coakley, 67-63--130. The event benefited various MSGA scholarship programs, including one which funds agronomy students at the University of Maryland. This year the MSGA will award scholarships totaling $30,000, and since 1969 has contributed nearly $300,000 toward scholarship aid. Reported by John Stewart from Argyle CC

Senior Golf News The final MISGA mixer saw a great turn-out on October 5th. There were three Chartwell golfers, Don Hilliard, Charlie Whitelaw and Steve Schoen that finished in the money. Thanks guys for a great representation. The senior wrap-up tournament on October 12th, the one that all seniors look forward to, saw Mort Creech, Neal Kerley, Dick Mulholland and Gene Merkert share the winners circle. It was a good season, with great weather, although hotter than usual at times. We visited some of the finest clubs in the area and hosted great competitive rounds here at Chartwell showing off our beautifully maintained golf course. The seniors thank the golf and dining staffs for their hard work throughout the season--a job well done! Looking forward to a well attended MISGA event season next year. For those seniors looking for some golf in Florida this winter, check out the MISGA web page at MISGA.Org for information on the Crystal River “Winter Fling” from Feb 20 – 26. As MISGA members, all are invited. It is a well organized week of golf and includes lodging and meals. Spouses are welcome and can be golfers or nongolfers. During its fall grant cycle the Foundation awarded $6,000 each to The Severna Park Assistance Network, Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Providence Center and Partners in Care. A grant of $2,500 was made to the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross for use in assisting Anne Arundel County residents in emergency situations and $350 toward the Hero’s Path at the Anne Arundel County 9/11 Memorial. Several Deli sponsors asked that their gifts be used to support specific organizations and their wishes were all honored.

Chartwell Foundation Awards Grants Following Deli Tournament The Chartwell Foundation has awarded $30,200 in grants to various non-profit organizations in the area. Of that amount $28,850 was provided through the sponsors who generously supported the 2010 Deli Tournament. The remainder came from additional foundation gifts.

GREEN

THUMB

inter will be soon approaching, but that does not mean that there aren’t many things to be done this time of year to wrap up the current growing season and get ready for next year.

W

BULB PLANTING Hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils offer early spring color before most of the summer annuals are available in the nurseries. This is the time of year to purchase and plant the bulbs. Just dig the holes to the recommended depth and drop the bulbs in. The bulb knows the correct way to grow so they don’t even have to be planted right-side up.

BED CLEANUP After a few hard freezes, beds are ready to be cleaned up. After the freezes, most perennial will turn brown and it will be time to cut them back. Some wait until spring to do this, however the debris that remains over the winter is a good place for insects to overwinter. Rake up all debris and cut back the perennials to within 1” of the ground. If the perennial foliage had diseases during the growing season, it is best to throw it out rather than compost it. Composting the diseased foliage will keep the diseases around next year when you add the mulch to the garden beds. Mulching now is an option, although most people want to wait until the spring

for that fresh look as the spring flowers come up. There is nothing wrong with mulching both times, just make sure the mulch layer is about 2-3” total. Continue to weed the beds through the fall since many of the winter weeds are growing and thriving. If they are not removed now, they will be ready to go first thing next spring. TREE PRUNING Winter is a great time to prune your deciduous trees. Without the leaves, the tree structure is clearly visible. The first thing to do is remove the dead wood in the trees. Second, prune branches that cross and rub each other. Third, remove branches that form a tight angle with another branch that could cause splitting as the tree grows. Finally, thin, weak branches should be removed to open up the canopy and allow greater light penetration. Light heading back is an option; however, hard pruning back of the tree canopy will actually cause the canopy to grow thicker. Broadleaf evergreens (i.e.-hollies) can be lightly pruned and brought in for decorations. Major evergreen pruning should be done in the early spring.

LAWN MAINTENANCE First, you can start to think about blowing out your irrigation system. Waiting too long could cause water in the lines to freeze and crack your pipes creating more expense next season. Second, as the leaves fall from the trees, it is important to remove leaves so you don’t smother the grass. The grass will become yellow or even die because of a lack of sunlight and air circulation as the leaves become wet and matted, so removal is crucial. Third, if you need to do any last minute seeding or sodding, this can be done before the ground freezes. Finally, as grass moves into winter dormancy, it is time for a dormant feeding. Apply a slow-release, organic fertilizer which will promote strong roots and early spring green up..
