ust short of two years ago, our Board of Governor’s subcommittee supported club management to improve the way the Club receives feedback from our membership. The objective was to get quality, usable information more quickly and at different times of the year. This model allows our committees and management teams to aggressively address any shortcomings at the Club, and to validate areas that are performing well. The new, user-friendly, online model of the Member Survey was born! It truly has been a great tool and motivator for both our committees and staff.

Since the beginning, we have challenged our staff to meet or exceed the 90-point threshold. I am proud to say that we reached our goal after the most recent second quarter survey! Some highlights of the Survey: • Nine of the 15 categories were over 90% with three others between 89% and 90%. • Kids for All Seasons lead the way with a 95.3% score followed closely by Membership Services at 94%. • The cumulative average score of “Attitude of Staff” is 94.4%. Wow! • Golf “Preparation” and “On Course” scored 92.3% and 91% respectively. • Michelle Scannel, Jayson Dean, Rodrigo Caicedo, Martin Oribhabor and Alvar David lead the way on staff recognized by members. The hard work and focus of the committees and staff are truly appreciated! While it is exciting to see these results, rest assured there are plenty of things to dig into. As we speak, we are all striving to make the Club better! Lastly, I would like to thank each of you for taking the time to take part in the survey. The feedback you provide is immensely valuable to us. If you have not received an invitation to participate in the survey over the past 15 months, please contact the membership office to update your email address. If you would like more detailed information on the Member Survey, it can be found on the Club web site under My Club.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER
C
OOL. Cool it. Cool down. Cool off. Cool reception. Cool idea. Cool look. Cool has multiple meanings. To my teenagers, it’s what I’m not. To North Texas in July and August, it’s what it’s not. To the Baylor Medical Center in Irving, it represents the generous gifts of the Four Seasons Resort and Club. Our club’s philanthropy is aptly named “Cool October,” solely focusing on cancer care at a hospital that is virtually in our own backyard. Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, so this effort is truly something in which we can all be proud.
Did you know that Baylor Irving is the only non-profit hospital in Irving? Did you know that Cool October has donated over $2M since its inception, making it the largest contributor in the hospital’s history? Our mission for the next couple of years is to fund a new technology that is fitted to the Linear Accelerator we helped purchase a few years ago—a technology so precise, it saves healthy tissue from harmful radiation treatments. Doctors compare it to using a GPS system for the body!
Cool October is once again being spearheaded by Public Relations Director, Angela Enright, who has also recently become ViceChair of the Hospital Board, ensuring your money is being spent in the most efficient manner. There are many ways to contribute: By supporting Paul Earnest, Robin Scott, and Michelle Scannell with their respective marathons in golf, tennis, and spinning… by participating in the 1 mile Fun Run, 5K and/or 10K run… by participating in the October 27th golf tournament which is open to corporate sponsorship…by volunteering for the Cool October activities… or by donating and bidding on fabulous items during the online auction… We are all so blessed to be able to enjoy a club of this stature, so let’s be sure to give back during Cool October. Under the watchful eye of Angela, I’m convinced they are doing extraordinary things at Baylor, and I believe that anything given is always returned many times over. Now, that’s COOL. Sincerely yours, Larry LeVan Chairman Board of Governors
Benefits program offers discounts on your favorite activities Did you know that by keeping up with Sportsline and the Weekly Watch that you can take advantage of monthly benefits that save you money when you enjoy the Sports Club? Launched last February, our Because We Love You program offers every member a monthly selection discounts to favorite activities and dining outlets. Half price off Sunday golf greens fees, meal specials in Racquets and discount coupons in the Pro Shop are just a few examples. Be sure and check the Weekly Watch for the latest offers which are valid for 30 days. Just mention the offer and enjoy the benefit!

COOL OCTOBER
O
n the Front Line of Fighting Cancer. Your gifts directly help patients at Baylor Irving Cancer Center.
Four Seasons Resort and Club at Las Colinas is proud to celebrate its 26th year of fighting cancer in its community by raising money for treatment and awareness of the disease among local citizens. To date, Cool October has contributed more than $2.1 million to the Irving Healthcare Foundation in support of cancer services at Baylor. Since 1992, every advancement in treatment at the cancer center has been funded in part by proceeds from Cool October. This year’s goal is $150,000 to used towards an upgrade in image guided radiation therapy.
The excitement and passion behind the events are driven by the more than 700 employees of Four Seasons Resort and Club, loyal sponsors and supportive members of The Sports Club. MAKING HISTORY
BYE BYE SUMMER...
F
O
By Paul Earnest, Director of Golf
or the first time in recent club history, we have three of our “major” golf events in a six week window this fall. The lineup begins with the Club Championships on September 24 - 26 followed by the Nelson Cup, October 7 - 10, and concludes with the Senior Club Championship on October 24 - 25.
With this sensational fall lineup, I look forward to seeing many of you playing and practicing in preparation. I offer a few things for you to consider for a competitive fall. I heard Byron tell people in our golf schools often that he really liked to focus on the pitch shots around the green. This was a “mini-swing” that allowed you to work on swing mechanics while still knowing where the club was in relation to your motion. Rhythm and timing all seem to improve. My second tip, is to make your practice more realistic by changing clubs and targets on the range often. Pick two poles in the distance to create a ‘fairway’ and hit three balls to it. Change to a long iron and simulate your approach shot. Hit from various lies....mixing it up prepares you for the unexpected that always seems to happen in these type formats.
GOOD SHOTS
By Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction
John Cunningham, Director. Golf Course Operations
ur Golf Operations Staff and our putting surfaces welcome the break in the summer heat. The high summer temperatures put quite a strain on our greens as they are comprised of cool season plants. During the summer our Golf Operations management staff monitored and applied precise amounts of water to encourage plant health. The initial probing began at 5:00 a.m. and the last round of visual checks and probing usually ended around 5:00 p.m. Needle tine aerifications, hollow tine aerifications, venting of greens, prescribed fertility applications and fungicide applications all are necessary to make it through the hot summer months. With fall temperatures that are more favorable for bentgrass growth, we will be encouraging plant health, density and improving ball roll through topdressing, venting and rolling greens. Fall is when the bentgrass plant can exhale a bit and concentrate on growing roots and shoots. We are looking forward to great weather and even better playing conditions. If you have any questions, concerns or comments please send them my way at John.Cunningham@fourseasons.com.
P
art of hitting good shots is the preparation done before you make the swing. A consistent pre-shot routine is vital to preparing yourself for any shot during the round. The pre-shot routine should consist of having a good picture of the shot at hand, making a practice swing to get a feel for how to hit the shot and then picking a good line to set your body at address. This routine should be done each and every time a shot is played. The more consistent you are at making the preshot routine the same every time, the higher the percentage is going to be for a good shot. Once the plan is set and the club is pulled, most PGA TOUR players take less than 20 seconds to hit their shot. Follow these steps and you can help improve your percentage of good shots in future rounds. Photo 1 - I’ve gotten a picture of the shot now I’m picking out my line. Photo 2 - I have the same entry into the ball every time. Set the club, then my feet and finally find the target with my eyes.

TENNIS TIP
SPORTS TALK
By John Mullman, Director of Tennis Instruction
Robin Scott, Director of Sports
L
How important is footwork on the tennis court? The answer is, it’s critical to play at your best. To help with your footwork, follow these tips:
et’s get in shape!! Being active during the months of September, October and November will pay huge dividends when the festive season hits. By getting in shape now, you will be more likely to enjoy the holiday season, and not stress out about the additional few pounds that you may gain between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. And then you will be ready to hit the new year running, knowing that you do not have far to go to get back in shape. At The Sports Club, we have everything you need at your disposal to help you:
• • • •
Experienced personal trainers who can set-up a personalized exercise and training program for you A nutritional specialist - Erin Cooper - who can give you crucial dietary guidance A Sports Therapy Specialist - Paul Wells - to work out your aches and pains A Group Exercise Program that offers a wide variety of classes geared towards all physical skill levels.
•
Move your feet continuously until just before your opponent strikes the ball. By split-stepping (or adjusting) just before your opponent hits the ball, you will be focused, balanced and ready for your next shot. This will create more opportunity for success with your shot making.
•
Continue to move to the ball at impact. By hitting the ball early you will hit the ball with greater velocity and depth.
Good luck and have fun on the court!

he kids are back in school. You finally have your life back! Why not use the little extra time you have on your hands to begin or re-start a well balanced exercise routine? After all the vacations a few extra pounds may have “appeared”, so it’s time to work them off before the next holiday season rolls around. The last thing you want to do is add extra pounds over the festive season to the pounds picked up over the summer. To ignore the accumulation of pounds can lead to obesity...which is health enemy #1 in the US. The latest statistics reveal that obesity and other obesityrelated diseases are directly or indirectly responsible for over 160,000 deaths per year in the United States alone. And don’t forget, the fastest growing segment of our population exposed to the dangers of obesity and its related problems are our children. So not only is now a great time to get yourself back into the club and exercising regularly, but if you are a parent, encourage your children to participate in regular physical activity. Make it fun for you and your family. Get everyone active and make healthy living your way of life. You will enjoy more energy and fewer trips to the doctor. In the words of Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby: “ Those who refuse to make time for exercise now will be forced to make time for illness later.” Hope to see you and your family at the club soon exercising your way to a better quality of life. Please contact any one of the Sports Club fitness professional staff for assistance or guidance with your exercise routine.
