April 2011

March Madness is upon us accompanied by a handful of 70 degree days, the driving range is open and our snowbirds are returning from southern/southwestern climes . . . so all is cycling back to normal at Meridian Hills Country Club. Better news yet, the Club’s finances are in good order in line with several successive months of strong performance. Retiring Club Treasurer Todd Hillman deserves some real thanks for his hard work in bringing some common sense and hard analysis to our finances. The press of business (he has a day job) has him leaving his MHCC calculator/abacus behind and turning the Treasurer’s position over to Jim Powers. Our members can expect from Jim the same kind of dedicated “volunteer” service as we received from Todd.

Mark W. Ford Club President

The Board in its last two meetings has been focusing on new member initiatives as presented by George Farra and his Membership Committee. One does not need a Ouija board to understand that new members are important to our continued success. At the same time we want to remain mindful of maintaining our Club’s environment/culture. Striking the appropriate balance is not a certain science. The Board has elected to turn to our existing members as the first step in our initiative. The Club is offering an opportunity to transition to Resident Golf, “A” membership on very favorable terms. This limited-in-time offer is intended for those who may now wish to transfer to “A” membership and Lisa Strachota can share the details. She can be reached at (317) 860-1556. Reaching out to and within our MHCC family certainly seemed like the right thing to do before looking elsewhere. The Board will also be considering a reshaped program to attract “legacy” members – those who may have some previous relationship with the traditions of our Club. A new junior membership is in the design phase as well. As always, your Board solicits your thoughts and comments.

Welcome back to another exciting spring here at MHCC for 2011. It is mid-March as I am writing this article, and already we have experienced several great days of weather well in to the 70’s. Hopefully this trend will continue. Ludo is gearing up for tennis season and work has begun preparing the pool for our Memorial Day weekend opening.

Message from the Manager

With Easter quickly approaching, things are already hopping here at the Club. We are looking forward to our Kevin O’Laughlin, CCM annual Easter Egg Hunt with our Breakfast with the Bunny Club Manager event on Saturday, April 23rd from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Face painting, balloon artist, crafts, games, in addition to hunting for eggs and a special visit from the Easter Bunny are all on the schedule for this fun filled day. The following day on Sunday, April 24th is our sumptuous Easter Brunch Buffet from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. One of our most popular events of the year, we encourage you to secure your reservation early. Our popular Mother’s Day Buffet will follow shortly after on Sunday, May 8th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Again, reservations are required and recommended early. Our goal is to provide the best programs possible to meet the needs of our entire membership, and to ensure that each of you has a consistently good experience every time you use the Club. Please assist us by taking a few moments when dining at the Club to fill out your survey card and let us know how we are doing. This information will aid us in our quest to provide you and your guest with the finest service and cuisine in town. Also please note the changes to Bogey’s & the Hearth Rooms’ age restrictions on the following page. Due to the popularity of our Vintners Club program, we are currently in the process of constructing several new lockers in the hallway directly adjacent to Bogey’s Dining Room. Although we do have a waiting list for the majority of the new lockers, we will have a few available. Vintners Club members will have access to limited allocations of fine wines at substantially discounted rates. Other benefits include complimentary wine tastings and priority seating for our quarterly wine dinners. Please contact Chef Miller or myself if you are interested in inclusion on the waiting list. Sponsored parties have been, and will continue to be, an important source of revenue for Meridian Hills. Next time you or someone you know is contemplating where to have your next Business Meeting, Company Party, Wedding Reception, Fundraiser, Anniversary, or other special event, please consider your Club. We offer superior quality in our products and services for a tremendous value compared to our competition. Sponsoring private parties is a win-win situation that provides added value to your membership and helps the Club generate much needed revenue. So, be sure to give us a call and see what we have to offer. As we continually strive to improve all aspects of our operation, feedback from the membership becomes a vital source of information. Please call or e-mail me at the Club anytime you have a suggestion. Looking forward to a great season, Kevin

Membership Update

Membership Message from your Board of Directors

Each of us should take great pride in the renovations brought about by our investment in the Hawk Project. The upgrade to our facilities positions us well for years to come. Moreover, the emphasis on maintaining our tradition as a “family club” is a real plus in today’s environment. And now, in conjunction with our Membership Committee, the Board of Directors is studying new member initiatives. The idea has been advanced to focus first on existing members before reaching out to others. The Board unanimously approved this proposal and now wishes to extend to all our Clubhouse and Tennis members an opportunity to convert to Resident Golf “A” membership. Again, this decision reflects our strong preference for looking first to our existing Meridian Hills family. For those with an interest in this limited program, please contact Lisa Strachota at (317) 860-1556.

Are you a Social, Clubhouse or Tennis member who has an interest in Golf?

The Board of Directors created a program for existing Social, Clubhouse and Tennis members to convert to Resident Golf class by June 15, 2011. Apply the initiation fee you’ve already paid as a credit toward the Resident Golf initiation fee of $30,000.00 and spread the payments over 10 years without interest. For those members who also are a descendant, including adopted children and stepchildren, of a current Resident Golf member, you may take advantage of this program at the Legacy Resident Golf rate of $25,000.00 with the payments spread equally over 10 years without interest. Resident Golf dues are $490.00 per month plus Hawk Project Dues of $100.00 per month. For more information or to take advantage of this program, please contact Director of Membership, Lisa Strachota, before June 15, 2011 at (317) 860-1556.

Membership Update

The Membership Committee and Board of Directors have had extensive discussions since December regarding the state of membership in the Club. We’ve studied demographics, historical trends and looked at our competition. The conclusion is for Meridian Hills Country Club to remain the premier Indianapolis country club, we must continue to attract and accept new Clubhouse, Tennis and Golf members. At this time, the Board of Directors have opted to rely on our membership and the “Word of Mouth” approach to attracting new members. Through the years, we’ve identified distinguished members for our Club and ask you to continue to encourage your colleagues, neighbors and family to become a member of our Club. We also ask that you contact Lisa Strachota if you know of someone who should be a member or someone who has an interest in membership. Lisa can recommend a plan of action to help you introduce someone to the Club. For instance, if you know someone who’s an avid golfer and is interested in joining a golf club, you could arrange with Lisa to bring your friend out to the Club for a complimentary George Farra guest round of golf and Lisa can make arrangements for their family to experience the Membership Committee Club. We also have the Season Opening Party coming up in June. The Membership Chairman Committee would like you to show your friends what you experience when you’re at the Club by entertaining them for a complimentary evening. If you know someone who is particularly interested in the cuisine of the Club, you can make arrangements with Lisa to highlight one of our dining venues by bringing them to lunch or dinner. The Membership Committee knows our best asset to new members is the relationships our members have with people who aren’t members of the Club and that’s why we want to make introducing friends to membership as easy as possible.

Golf Update To the Meridian Hills Membership, As I begin my eighth season as your Golf Course Superintendent, I look forward to seeing all of the members and their guests returning to the Club to enjoy another great year of golf. In the past seven years, the golf course has improved greatly and again sets the bench mark for other clubs to measure themselves. I would like to personally thank the entire membership for their continued support. I would also like to take this opportunity to share something that you can do while playing and practicing to keep your golf course in the shape you have become accustom too. Please return carts to cart path at green posts. I will be introducing cart crossing posts on all fairways to let you know when to return to the cart path. The area around the green is very much in play. No one likes to hit chip shots out of some ones tire track.

Jim Hess Golf Course Superintendent

Please always fix your ball mark on the green. My crew and I try to fix as many ball marks as we can each morning. Often though, the next day is too late to properly fix the mark before permanent damage has occurred to the grass plant leaving an unsightly brown mark. Please remember to push towards the center of the ball mark with the tool and never pry upward. Please always replace your divot. In our climate we have a good chance that the divot will heal if replaced immediately after taking it. The sand should only be used if the divot explodes or is irretrievable. The sand should only be used on fairways. There is grass seed combined with the sand that I do not want introduced to any other playing surfaces. Please leave space between your divots on the practice range. When divots are taken one on top of another it creates a large patch of missing turf. This takes ten times longer for that area to recover for use again. By simply leaving some space between your divots you can accelerate the recovery time needed for that area to be usable again. Please pick up broken tee’s on the tee box. Leaving your broken tee’s on the tee box is just bad housekeeping. It also causes me to use man hours to pick them up every day when I could be using the labor for something else. I know the membership at MHCC wants to do everything they can to help ensure quality golf course conditions. That is why it is my pleasure to serve as your Golf Course Superintendent. My staff and I would again like to thank you for your support and with you success throughout this golf season. Sincerely, Jim Hess Golf Course Superintendent
