The hospitality business as a whole can be tough at times. It does not matter if it is a club, restaurant, hotel or contract food service- they all have difficulties as does any successful business. However, that is what makes what we do every day a challenge and one that I enjoy with a passion.

There is a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. Over the past two years, we have been blessed with an abundant harvest. The seeds were planted long ago. I joined the Club in 2006. The course had scenic views, but conditions were sub-par. Members approved the conversion of the fairways to rye grass, closing down 9 holes at a time. Hiroshi Menjo and I aced the 9th hole, a par 4 that played as a par 3 during one renovation. Only now, when our course is in such fabulous shape, do I appreciate our earlier sacrifice.

Of all the things that I get to do here, what I enjoy the most is being around my team, getting to know the Members, watching their children grow over time, hearing about kids graduating high school and going to college or completing college and moving onto their careers. Watching children go from being 4 feet tall to well over 6 foot, Mr. Kelmon and Mr. Chase… I wonder what their parents feed them!

In 2006, the Fitness Center didn’t exist. Today, we have a magnificent gym and a state-of-the-art pool where the party lasts until darkness on warm summer evenings. The Clubhouse renovations have given us a patio with spectacular, unrivalled views of San Francisco and the East Bay; and a bar that draws record crowds. Our new Chef ’s menus ensure that members enjoy fine dining in their home away from home. And the service is the best.

I have had the honor of getting to know some fantastic people in my 6 years at PAH and of all those people, Mr. Lou Southern was in a class by himself. Mr. Southern was a founding member of PAH who joined the club at the inception in 1958. He enjoyed everything about PAH and touched the lives of many. He played golf weekly with his group of friends and it did not matter how he played because playing kept him young. He referred to most as “young man” or “young lady” and was a true gentleman who always had a smile on his face. To you, Mr. Southern, I raise my glass. May you always find the fairway and have the sun shining on your smile.

The Board has started planting for the next harvest. Our greens and bunkers are close to the ends of their lives. We evaluate new designs which will improve the playability of the course for players with high and low handicaps. Many members have asked for a third tennis court. And we consider ways to expand the capacity of our Clubhouse, while better reflecting our history. For now, we only analyze the implications of these plans for the Club’s finances and Member experience. The groundwork will be laid for future Boards to propose new projects to the membership.

“There being no place like this place, near this place, then this place must be the place!” See you at the Club Dirk Zander, CCM

As always, if you have friends who should belong to the improved, and still rapidly improving, PAH please refer them to our Membership Director, Janice Graves.

It’s been a wonderful season of Team Play with Stanford joining us, and at present, we seem to be in 2nd place overall. Sue Larson is our hero. Exchanges with Los Altos and Peninsula were well attended and thanks to Alice Davis, well managed. Our Guest Days, arranged by Karen Ruccolo, have been such fun. Julie Fukuhara and her guests were big winners. Our Invitational arranged by June Nicole Gur and Anne Kramer was a blast from the past with a visit from Elvis and his Cadillac and great fun on the course. The creativity generated excitement and a great day of golf with friends. Thanks to both of these very busy women for planning such a terrific event.

After the 3rd round of the 2014 Women’s Club Championship, Eldona Hamel and Toshimi Ishii were tied and went to a playoff; the tie was broken on #18 after the 3rd time completing this hole and resulted in Eldona Hamel winning. Congratulations to Yuko Taira for capturing the Senior Club Championship. A big Thank You to all ladies who participated in this year’s exciting and fun Championship rounds of golf! We finished our Handicap Tournament in mid-June and as you read this, we are getting ready for our 2014 Summer Classic Invitational which takes place July 16 to 18. Partner Eclectic, organized by Elaine Nolet, runs July 1 through November 30. Sign up for our Summer Guest Day on August 21. Buddy-Buddy tournament, September 11 & 14, is just around the corner. Round up your partner for this fun two day event.

July 15 will be our final TOC competition and on August 19 we will be hosting Los Altos for an exchange at Palo Alto Hills. See you out on the course!

Congratulations Lauren Kim

Congratulations to Linda Stroud who had overall low net score of 68 and overall low gross score of 86 for April Trophy Day. Marilyn Wiley had a low net score of 69 and Kathy Craft won low putts, finishing the round with 28 putts. Toshimi Ishii won overall low net on May Trophy Day with a score of 63. Eldona Hamel won low gross with a score of 91 and Marjorie Howe won low putts, scoring 31 putts. Thank you to Joan Barram and Carolyn Armstrong for organizing our Spring Fling and to Kirsten Michelsen for your work on our May Guest Day.

Lauren placed third in the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at Tulsa Country Club. Playing for Stanford University, she finished an impressive 3 under par after four rounds of competition. Page 4

actively seek out bunkers that we feel need to be taken out…look for deletions soon. 4. Most importantly we have found water. I especially want to thank Andrew Morgan and his staff for executing all these tasks in a short amount of time and with great skill.

I know you have all played the holes with new tees by now…I wondered what you think of the new 4 Tree Tee on #13. The Golf Committee has made great strides in listening to our membership and went on a mission to make the course “more playable”. The committee thinks we succeeded with #13 being an easier hole to par now. Also, they think the tee shot sets up better for all players on #15 after moving the tee 5 yards to the right, making the trees on the left out of play. To review, here is a list of what else they have done the last 6 months: 1. Removed numerous trees (re-planted some) that were blocking the average player’s flight line…for instance, on #1, 3, 6, 7, 11, 13, 15, and 17. We also improved the view on several holes because of this- #15 and #6 specifically. 2. We shaved our green surrounds on every hole to allow players different options on how to play shots around the green. We took away the hard shot around the greens that require more skill to execute. 3. We formed a committee to

July is a busy month. The Ladies Invitational is Wednesday afternoon, July 16 through Friday, July 18. Remember, the course AND range are closed on these days and all our staff’s attention will be focused on running a great event for the ladies. We also have our Men’s Buddy-Buddy tournament on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. Course will be open at certain times….call the golf shop for times you can play. August is the month for club championships: Senior, Junior and Men’s championships finishing up this month. Golf Tip of the Month: How to play golf in hot weather. Number one is stay hydrated… drink water every couple of holes… have a water container that you fill and re-fill as needed. Number 2 is wear sunscreen that blocks the sun’s heat rays…it can wear you out. Number 3 is to conserve energy… carry a lighter golf bag (take out all those golf balls!), ride a cart to allow the breezes to keep you cool, wear a hat to block the sun from your head. If you start to feel like you are losing energy…just quit and come back when it is cooler…. try evening golf.

On a par three the priest asked what club are you going to use. The young man replied, an eight iron, how about you. The priest said ‘I will use a seven iron and pray.’ The young man put his ball on the green. The priest dribbled the ball out a few yards. The young man commented, ‘At our church, when we pray we keep our head down.’

With July and August in full swing we are already working on new items for the Bar and Dining Room. A few new items will be popping up as summer comes and goes plus a big menu change planned for autumn. As we all know, water is in short supply. This is constantly challenging us with produce availability and prices that seem to go up each day. We adjust menus regularly to follow these fluctuations. With constantly evolving dining and banquet menus, please be sure to inform us if you or anyone in your party has any food allergies. It is imperative that we have this information before we begin creating your meal. Your Chef, David M. Root

Through The Green

Holiday Hours

By: Andrew Morgan Our biggest complaint on the course is our bunkers. This year and moving forward, the maintenance staff has added another process in attempting to achieve the goal of having all greenside bunkers play with the same consistency.

Labor Day, Monday, September 1 The Club will be OPEN on Labor Day! Due to the holiday, the Clubhouse and Golf Course will be CLOSED on Tuesday, September, 2 instead. Acqua Fitness will be OPEN on September 3 from 6 am to 6 pm.

The bunkers at PAH have not had any major work done to them since 1999. The USGA recommends replacing bunker sand every eight years. Our bunker sand is contaminated and does not drain well at all. After regular nightly irrigation, the sand eventually compacts because all the pore space is contaminated with native soil and does not drain properly. To combat this problem we have purchased 4 mini roto-tillers that are enabling us to get in the bunkers and “bust up” the sand to relieve some of that compaction. The process involves going through each greenside bunker and running the roto-tiller to loosen all of the sand. At this point, if we find that there is not enough sand in the bunker, we will add the correct amount of new sand to be consistent with the others. Once the tilling is complete, we then come in behind with wood rakes and smooth out the sand. This process takes our staff roughly 3 days to complete and we are going to try and do this process twice a month to enhance our bunker performance. Our long term goal is to have the bunkers rebuilt with a new bunker liner and new sand that will drain properly. This rebuild will prevent compaction, contamination and inconsistent playing conditions. I am very hopeful that in the future we will have this project completed. For now, we are doing everything possible to provide the most consistent bunker sand possible. Don’t forget to check out our blog at http://paloaltogreens.blogspot.com/

Dragon Boat 2014
