Summer 2013
2013 BRITISH AMERICAN
Summertime.... What do those words conjure in your imagination? Perhaps the words of George Gershwin's famed song slip into your mind “Summertime, And the livin' is easy...” or for those baby boomers among us, I'm betting, Mungo Jerry's classic pop single “In the Summertime” pops into your mind... ha, bet you're humming it right now, and the chorus is now rolling around in your brain..Tch, tch,tch... but I digress. The summer season is a perfect opportunity to pair some business networking with some of our spectacular summer events – such as the glorious Garden Party at the Montage, the artistically themed Business After Hours at the Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach, and the popular summer business mixer hosted by a multitude of International Business Chambers at the prestigious Newport Beach Country Club. Orange County will also be celebrating the summer with a British accent – the Grand Opening of the Titanic Exhibition at the site of the former Buena Park Wax Museum will open soon, and Bloomingdales at Fashion Island is preparing for a British Invasion incorporating fashion and classic British car elements. Which reminds me, are you visiting www.babcoc.org on a regular basis? We're posting details of our fun events and introducing our new members, and I'm sure you wouldn't want to miss a thing. These events wrap business networking in a fun, collegial and social atmosphere. It's the perfect opportunity to bring along a spouse or significant other, colleague or a guest to see how business networking done BABC style has a unique British/American flair that you won't find anywhere else. Now if you excuse me, I need to YouTube Mungo Jerry and get my summer vibe on! Shaun Robinson, 2013-2015 BABC OC President & General Manager, Hilton Anaheim 714 740-4440- shaun.robinson@hilton.com

Unemployment Stats Truth or Fiction? The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the June jobless rates rose in 28 states but also noted that California stands out as the most improved state with its jobless rate falling 2.1 percentage points in a year to 8.5%. But does that tell the complete story?
Are the statistics true? Are they realistic? What assumptions and expectations can be made from these figures? Do they lead to misguided or even harmful public policies and programs? Join us in the fall for a spirited and informative business debate on the subject of 'Unemployment'. A panel of well-informed and probably very opinionated debaters is being assembled for your edification and entertainment. Details will be posted soon at www.babcoc.org You won't want to miss this one!

Trip of a Lifetime for Two OC Girls! BABC 2013 Scholarship winners Lisbeth Gonzalez and Daisy Monjaras are back from their cultural studies trip to England and as you might imagine the trip made a big impression on the two girls. They loved meeting the other ACS students from all across the United States and were very impressed with historical sites, citing Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament amongst their faves. Initially they had a hard time adjusting to the different food, but the two girls gamely tried most things including a roasted pig at a special luncheon on the second day out – said Lisbeth, “I wasn't really sure about the pig, but
I must admit, when it was served between bread as a sandwich it was pretty good!” There were a lot of firsts on this trip for the girls; including first extended time away from family, and for Daisy it was her first time on a plane. They both agreed that two weeks wasn't long enough to see everything, and Daisy would have liked to stay longer. Has it opened their eyes to new possibilities? Yes, says Lisbeth who shared that she'd like to come back and see more of Europe and perhaps even study abroad… London calling – or perhaps that's Spain, France or Germany they hear!

Avoiding Litigation Through Arbitration An international business dispute could land your company in court in another country subject to its laws, procedures and customs and represented by local counsel. This can be avoided through arbitration. Under both U.S. and U.K. law an agreement in writing to arbitrate disputes between the parties arising out of the transaction precludes them from suing each other in court. Arbitration clauses in international business agreements are widely used and many countries have arbitral organizations and centers that administer arbitrations, such as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London, the American Arbitration Association International Centre for Dispute Resolution in New York and the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris.
3. The arbitration is governed by less technical rules of procedure.
4. Limited pre-hearing discovery is allowed. 5. An arbitration usually takes less time than a trial. 6. The parties can specify what law will govern the arbitration and they can designate the place where it will be conducted.
7. Appeals are more limited than in litigation. 8. Under an international arbitration treaty known as the New York Convention, an international arbitration award is enforceable in a country other than where the arbitration was held.
9. While an international arbitration may not necessarily be Arbitration has significant advantages over court litigation:
1. An arbitration hearing is confidential and avoids media publicity.
2. Parties can choose the arbitrators and specify their qualifications. Or, they can agree that an arbitral organization, such as those mentioned, can conduct the arbitration. Usually, arbitration panels consist of three arbitrators. Parties choose arbitrators from names submitted by the arbitral organization. Or, the agreement can provide that each party chooses one arbitrator and the two arbitrators select the chairperson. In some cases, parties agree on a single arbitrator.

Do You Have Fun At Work? Did you know that studies have shown that workers who have a bit of fun on the job are more productive, less stressed out, less likely to call in sick and show greater creativity. Companies such as Google and Zappos are known for their creative and fun workplace environments which have contributed positively to both companies bottom lines. Yes, having 'fun' at work can help a company's performance as well. So it's not that surprising to learn that The Great Place to Work® Institute who produces FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For® list has Google listed in the number one spot for 2013. Do you know what matters most to your employees? Google made the decision to provide an health care, an on-site laundry, and haircuts – things that mattered most to the college graduates they were attempting to recruit. About 81% of the employees from 100 Best Companies to Work For® companies noted that their companies are fun places to work. In fact, the Great Place to Work Institute notes that it would be entirely unlikely for a 100 Best Company to score low as a fun place to work.
So what stops you from building camaraderie, encouraging creativity and in the process of striving for a better workplace enjoy bigger profits? If you have 'fun' built into your company culture, let The Patriot know so we can share ideas in a future issue. (email the editor debshrider@yahoo.com). If you need some ideas on how to lighten up at work – check out the book The Levity Effect: Why It Pays to Lighten Up” by Adrian Gostick and Scott Christopher. The book promises to deliver humorous anecdotes and to educate the reader with research, evidence, real-life examples, and practical applications and that's no joke!

Have Logo Will Travel The Summer season is definitely here and like many others, I bet you and your clients cannot wait to get out of the office cubical and go on vacation. But are you worried that your business will grind to a halt if you're not there? Did you know that good times or bad, rain or shine, working day or holiday - promotional products are busy at work, even when you're not around? Promotional products also known as advertising specialties are powerful branding solutions that last much longer than any other advertising medium, and they are everywhere. For example, when you and your clients travel on business or on vacation, your luggage can be branded with a logo. Just imagine how many eyeballs will see your logo as everyone is waiting to pick up their luggage from the carousel at the airport! Your message could also be working for you while you or your clients, lie on your company's logoed mat on the beach
wearing your logoed sunglasses, or as a walking billboard wearing a company t-shirt, to leaving your logo behind in the sand from your branded flip flops while sipping and spraying from your logo branded water bottle. The possibilities to promote your brand with your company logo are almost as endless as the number of grains of sand on the beach! It's summertime and there's no such thing as too much exposure! Here’s a 'cool' idea that’s a hot seller this season ask me about other cool ideas to get you noticed. Add a splash of something special to your drinks with light up non melting washable and reusable ice cubes. Tap on Tap Off - an eye catching way to promote your business at any event or party.
Hot Promotional Tip: Christmas in July…. Savvy marketers know that July is the time to start thinking about holiday promotions. Did you know that you can save money by ordering in July to take advantage of early bird discounts? (especially on calendars and day planners etc.)
