Well, we do live in exponential times and the amount of technology information doubles every two years; ever stop to think what we did BG – before Google? In this issue of the Patriot we take a look at computerized technology (aka the digital age) and the impact it has on our lives and business.

The tools we use define and shape our thinking, so it's safe to say that technology is in some ways rewiring our brains. Did you know there are 695 million Facebook users, more than 148 million LinkedIn users, and over 140 million tweets created each day? It's enough to make one dizzy, so how does one keep up? Experience is often considered the best teacher of knowledge, and since we cannot encounter everything, other people's experiences become our surrogate for knowledge. Do you feel like you are an analog person in a digital world? Never fear, you're not alone. We have tapped into the BABC OC membership to collect knowledge to share with you. In the pages of this issue you'll learn how BABC members tap into technology to connect better with clients, enhance their business and embrace all life has to offer through social media. On a lighter note, with the holidays' fast approaching, I'm sure your social life like mine is about to get really busy, so don't forget to put on your calendar our many significant events still to come (see back page), and particularly our social event of the year – the Annual Christmas Lunch, on Friday December continued on page 10...

Digitally Speaking BABC Members Rock! The Internet has existed since 1969, but it was with the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee and its implementation in 1991 that the Internet truly became a global network. Today the Internet has become the ultimate platform for accelerating the flow of information. Like it or not, we are a part of the information age, or the computer age or digital age if you prefer. The information age has changed culture, language, and it has even changed the thought process. As the industrial revolution brought many changes to traditional industry, the digital age has also wrought changes. Our economy is now very much based on the manipulation of information. Technology is showing us that the medium is the message. The membership of the BABC OC is wonderfully diverse and covers a broad range of industries and businesses. We asked some of our members how technology has changed the way they do business, or how it drives their business, Here's what they had to say.

Family, friends and businesses will tell you she's their go to resource for all things IT including how to set up Skype for personal and/or business use. Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional land line telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. As of September 2011 Skype has 929 million registered users. Skype made headlines earlier this year when Microsoft Corporation agreed to acquire Skype Communications, for US $8.5 billion. Janet believes it's only a matter of time before regular land line phones (POTS Lines) become obsolete. “Many people today are already using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and as smart phones become ever smarter, and more and more applications are created, usage will continue to grow” said Janet. GOING DIGITAL FOR THE HOLIDAYS I know we're in the middle of the summer heat so why am I bringing up the holidays? Am I talking Labor Day? Definitely not. I'm referring to the big holiday season in December. The time to start planning your holiday Craig Cooke, CEO Rhythm Interactive marketing efforts is now. That is unless your organization plans on going old school with pre-printed holiday greeting cards. Boring! If that's what you have been doing it's time to step it up with some creative interactive marketing for the holidays. Depending on your budget, there are a number of approaches to take. Direct email is an extremely cost effective approach and I strongly recommend everyone to utilize this channel at the very least. But for those with a little flexibility, add some additional tactics to the mix. Social Media is a given and hopefully by now, everyone reading this has some sort of presence on the major social networks. A solid strategy is to utilize these multiple channels to drive your audience to a microsite dedicated to your holiday campaign. This allows people to be focused on your holiday message and following through on intended courses of action. The possibilities for digital holiday campaigns are endless. Here are some examples of past campaigns from a variety of sources but I'll start it off with one from Rhythm Interactive that rocked the house.
Rhythm Dance Off An interactive campaign where Rhythm staff members competed in a dance off to contribute a monetary gift to the charity of their choice.
Elf Yourself This one epitomizes the viral effect that every marketer wants with their campaign, brought to you by Office Max. Another point of consideration is how your holiday marketing efforts perform over mobile media. Smart phones and tablets are exploding in the marketplace and offer a unique experience. Your campaign can even take advantage of mobile technologies such as gps to incorporate location-based marketing. At a minimum, your campaigns should incorporate an adaptive design to accommodate your mobile audience. Going digital with your holiday marketing this upcoming season is the right choice. Most likely, the upcoming holiday season will be challenging as an uncertain economy causes trepidation among consumers and businesses alike. The cost effectiveness and measurability of interactive marketing will deliver you the most value for your efforts. Rhythm Interactive is a full-service interactive marketing agency. They combine strategic marketing, experience design and elegant technology to create immersive brand experiences that win customers' hearts and minds so when it comes time to buy, they'll think of you and only you. http://www.rinteractive.net

Why your Business Needs Social Media Whether you like it or not, don't care or have enough time, your business is online and someone is or has talked about it. A Nielsen study from August 2010 shows people spend up to a third of their online time on social media sites, specifically Facebook, which creates an opportunity for small businesses to build a following. Not sure where to start? No worries, here are a few tips on how your business can use social networking to generate customers and boost your bottom line.
Hire the Right People to Manage Your Online Profile Make hiring and talent recruitment a top priority. This generation comes equipped with the knowledge and understanding of today's technology space. Be sure to seek out those who are passionate about your industry.
Evaluate Your Successes and Failures Your Online Presence should Reflect your Actual Business Executives and entrepreneurs should use their own social media profiles to promote their businesses, and business news. Take a critical look at your own Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages and see if they reflect your business. You want customers to be able to learn about your company no matter what page they stumble upon online.
Engage and Interact with your Customers
As the economy starts to rebound, it's important for businesses to assess last year's online campaigns to determine what worked and what didn't. Choose scalable services like Facebook Ads or Pay Per Click to track success rates.
Keep it About the Customer Use social media tools as customer support and always listen to what your customers want. At the end of the day, it's all about the customer - anyone who tells you different isn't going to have a successful business.
Offer product or service specials and promotions online to generate a buzz about your brand. Engages customers by offering live Q & A's on Facebook, giving them the opportunity to pose questions and get real-time advice and tips. Alternatively, you can post articles up with your view and ask open-ended questions to generate online dialogue.

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW: The Patriot asked the BABC OC Board of Directors “What are you reading these days & what are your favorite 'go-to' business resource sites? “ Shaun Robinson, General Manager Hilton Anaheim I queried a fellow traveler at an airport who I noticed was reading Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't by Jim Collins, and then I grabbed a copy from the bookstore to read on my flight. This book details how good companies became great companies, and how they went about doing so. It emphasizes how important it is to have the right people on the bus and discusses the level of engagement needed to achieve success. I have shared and given away about twenty copies if this book. The websites that garner most of my attention are travel and review sites like TripAdvisor, Orbitz and Yelp… these sites are a great way to track our brand reputation and respond in a timely fashion to keep our customer satisfaction factor high.
Joey Benedretti, President, Syspro There are so many good business books to read it's hard to pin down my favorite. The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox immediately springs to mind. It teaches how to get through day-to-day activities to make things work. It is particularly good for manufacturing industries who deal with productivity and quality issues. I also like Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin, it's an amazing book that gives lessons on how to make your business standout from the crowd. Five Hidden Mistakes CEOs Make: How to Unlock the Secrets that Drive Growth and Profitability by Tom Northup is another dog-eared book on my bookshelf. Crossing the chasm: marketing and selling high-tech products to mainstream customers by Geoffrey A. Moore is a really good resource book for marketing hightech industries. I do a lot of surfing on the web – I'm a news junkie and need to keep up with global news because I have a global customer base. As well as manufacturing websites, I also regularly check out my customer's websites.
