Prof essio n a l I n s t ru ct i o n Shady Canyon Golf Club offers the best possible instruction. A full staff of highly regarded PGA and LPGA professionals and apprentices provides personal and group lessons, allowing every Member to benefit from teachers thoroughly versed in the game.

Prac tic e Fac i l i t i e s A full-service practice range featuring practice bunkers and a large chipping green presents the ideal setting to fine-tune your golf game. There is also a quiet, secluded area specifically created to practice chipping, pitching and short yardage golf shots. Two large putting greens, situated near the Clubhouse, provide almost every conceivable putt encountered on the golf course. Hole after hole, the course deepens in intrigue and challenge. The front nine dips in and out of rocky ravines; there are some areas of the course that feel completely isolated. The back nine roughly follows Shady Creek deep into the canyon and incorporates stands of graceful sycamores.

Several holes are nestled against the nature

preserve and include an abundance of trees and rock outcroppings. The course ascends natural hillsides before heading back toward the Clubhouse. From one day to the next, Shady Canyon never feels or plays the same - high praise for any course. As Fazio said, “Because of the vastness of size and scale, the amount of acres, the natural environment, rock outcroppings, vegetation and open space views, the potential for golf at Shady Canyon is just sensational.

Wine Festival By Raphael Tuch, Clubhouse Manager

On June 24, Shady Canyon Golf Club will celebrate its 8th Annual Wine & Art Festival.

This perennial sell-out event is considered one of the best events of the year by many of our Members.

The festival is situated under an airy canopy on our Great Event Lawn with sweeping views of the Golf Course and the rugged hillside. Pick up your wine glass and a map of the wineries and be transported to the wine country. Over 50 wineries from all over the world will be ready to pour you a taste of their wonderful wines. Maybe start the evening with a glass of Champagne from Taittinger or a Blanc de Blancs from Schramsberg. Of course, there are all the well-known wineries like Chateau Montelena, Darioush, Dominus, Far Niente, Flowers, Grgich Hills, Pahlmeyer, Patz & Hall, Paul Hobbs, Rombauer, Silver Oak, Stag’s Leap and many more.

19 |

SHADYCANYONGOLFCLUB.COM

Last year, four of our Member-owned wineries were also present: Fazeli Cellars, Landy Family Vineyards, Layer Cake and Moment of Truth. Now, it is time to explore some up-and-coming wineries. Have you heard of Alpha Omega, Orin Swift, Redmon, Salvestrin or Tres Sabores; why not try some new wine regions – Croatia anyone? If you are running low on wine glasses or decanters, you will have the opportunity to purchase the latest from Austrian glassmaker, Riedel. As the day turns into night and an amber glow takes over the mood, mingle with your friends to the sounds of live entertainment. Stop by the exquisite food stations, created by Chef Dominique and his culinary team. Get a taste of sea bass and shrimp mousse en-croute, mini abalone with ginger butter, curried scallops with nectarine salsa, duck confit and foie gras tamales, carved Napa Valley leg of lamb, grilled beef tenderloin, international and domestic cheeses, freshly prepared sushi and delectable desserts. On the north side of the event area, you will find our artists’ wall. In the past years several artists like wine painter Thomas Arvid, plein air artists Val Carson and Lynn Wiederman, photographer John Connell, sculptor and painter Andrew Myers, sculptor Daniel Oropeza, official Grammy artist Todd White and others displayed their works.

SHADYCANYONGOLFCLUB.COM

Shady Canyon Golf Club is nestled in a unique area in Orange County, and although the Club is not easily seen by the public at large, our Members are deeply imbedded in the community.

Creating a Shady Canyon Golf Club Charitable Foundation

was unanimously supported by the Club Board of Directors.

“Our Members are very active in the community, and with

our own Charitable Foundation our Members have the

privilege of supporting local charities through their very own 501(c)(3),” says Steve Buck, General Manager.

One of the advantages of having a foundation within the

Club is that we are able to carefully select and assess the charities we wish to support. The Charitable Foundation Board of Directors has determined it will concentrate on families in crisis, children in need, the elderly and terminally ill, the homeless and promoting literacy and education.

Having a direct relationship with selected organizations makes the joy of giving that much more personal and rewarding.

Knowing that your community is benefitting

from your Club’s involvement provides a sense of pride and camaraderie amongst Members.

The flexibility to create and organize fundraising within

the Club allows the process to be not only fun, but done

in a fashion that is comfortable for our Members. One

charitable golf tournament and gala will be held each year, while, smaller more intimate events may be held throughout the year.

If you would like to learn more about the Charitable

Foundation or how you can get involved, please contact General Manager, Steve Buck.

W

edding fashion has evolved over the years. Today’s bride likes to think “out of the box.”

The thought of mixing up what would be a typical

wedding standard is paramount. Square, wooden dance floors might now be diamond-shaped white

creative bride chooses table groupings of square and rectangle tables.

One of the most interesting trends is the addition of

late night cocktail parties. At Shady Canyon, we call it the “after party.” The cake has been cut and some of your guests have left for home. Why not move the

remaining guests to another space, which is decorated with hip lounge furniture and rotating LED lights, for

continued dancing with your most intimate friends?

Another trend is to create a lounge around your dance floor with the dining tables on the outskirts of the site. Once your guests have finished their meals and are

dancing the night away, they can bring their drinks over to the fun furniture and enjoy the rest of the evening in a more casual, communal setting.

Lighting is an important element that is often the last detail a bride considers. It is what creates the ambiance for the evening. From soft candles to create romantic

warmth to Gobos swirling around the dance floor in bright colors and inventive shapes, make your color unexpected. One recent bride changed the lighting

color in the room with each dinner course, which added excitement throughout the meal.

It is the small details that are often the most fun to create.

Fl ag flown in Afghanistan

re tu r ns to Shady Canyon Golf Club

This special American Flag will be raised and flown for distinguished events and holidays to honor our men and women in the armed services.

Shady Canyon Golf Club is honored to have had one of its own American flags flown in Afghanistan. The American flag left Shady Canyon on January 25, 2011, and was flown over the 1st Marine Division (Forward) Headquarters, Camp Leatherneck, in the Helmand province of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom on February 8. The base of where the flag was flown is a memorial to the Marines that have been killed in action in the area. The accompanying flag was dedicated and flown courtesy of Lt. Col. David C. Weir, USMC and Lt. Col. Grant Williams, USMC Reserves, in honor of Shady Canyon Golf Club.
