2014 BOARD of GOVERNORS Bob Shema, Chair Bill Bailey, Lowelle Childers, Chuck Hosler, Lydia Karney, Hank Kimbriel, Pat McMahon, Alex Pier, Sharon Pfaff

Chair’s Chatter BOB SHEMA,

Board of Governors CHAIRMAN ringo@designblockzero.com

Here we are at the end of 2014 already, which means I have completed my first full year as the BOG Chairman and I’m happy to announce I have been elected to serve as Chairman again to finish out a second term! Once again I am excited and honored to do so. It has been a great deal of fun to get an up close and personal view of what it takes to run such a unique facility like Four Seasons Resort and Club.

I’ve also enjoyed visiting with and getting to know more about our dedicated committee members that serve on Golf Services, Golf Greens, Tennis, Fitness, Social Food & Beverage and the Young Members Committee. These individuals put in a lot of time and effort to work so diligently to make every aspect of our club be the best it could be. Thank you! Through this process I have also been more closely exposed to various staff and management personnel employed at the property that are directly responsible for making sure that every member and guest’s experience is truly first class. As part of this acknowledgement we have been inviting one employee a month to visit with us at the beginning of our Board meetings to share their experiences and discuss their roles and responsibilities. This has been very rewarding for both the Board members and employees involved! And oh wow... what a terrific year it’s been at the Club! We started off with the announcement of the sale of the property to Blackstone Investments with the news shortly there after of their intention to create major improvements throughout the property. Members had the opportunity to preview some of the planned improvements and renderings at a presentation in October. The Club management team also announced our exciting partnership with a brand called Well & Being. Together these two will bring you a new health and wellness experience like no other in the area. If you have not had the opportunity to be at the presentation you can view pictures of the improvements on the club website and Facebook page. I encourage everyone to take a look!

W

e are so excited to take the Club and Resort to the next level and to create an experience like no other for our entire membership in spring of 2015. Plans and preparation for the Club’s $3.5 million renovations are underway! In addition to the multi-million dollar renovation project, we are also extremely excited to partner with Well & Being, to bring you a new health and wellness experience at the Club. Well & Being is the only guided, personalized and integrated spa and wellness experience offering the opportunity to explore a full array of healthy lifestyle options in an inviting fitness and spa setting. They bring together the very best coaches, therapists, instructors, nutritionists and experts in every area of preventative health and medicine, and make it easily accessible all under one roof - your Club.

In closing I would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season and I look forward to seeing all your faces around the club next year!

We are so excited to share updates and hot-off-thepress renderings and design elements as we move forward.

PS: Please join us for the New Year’s Eve Bash and ring in the New Year, Las Vegas Style, with your friends and fellow club members!

Get fit with Josh Biard JOSH BIARD, PERSONAL TRAINER & FITNESS SPECIALIST

D

uring the first three months as a personal trainer at Four Seasons, my clients have lost an average of over 15 pounds each. Every day members ask me how my clients have had so much success in such a short period of time. Most people find it hard to believe that my clients only train with me for 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week. I believe in quality over quantity. What you do in the gym is a very small percentage of what it takes to reach your health and fitness goals. I believe a fun and effective fitness program is very important. The most challenging and rewarding part of my job as a trainer, is motivating people to change their lifestyle and making a decision to commit to reach their optimum fitness level.

Don’t lose your Holiday Cheer (or Sanity) Well & Being Staff

T

he holiday season can be a wonderful time to spend with friends and family and share loving moments with those closest to us. It also can be a stressful period of time filled with shopping lines, party planning, and traveling. The following tips can help you enjoy the holidays! Stay Fitness-Minded Don’t fall off your fitness routine during the holidays. In fact, turn it up! How better to reward yourself after a highintensity workout than a savory seasonal dinner (or dessert). If you are driving to visit family, plan a hike along the way. If you are cooking, do sets of lunges during your downtime. The more you incorporate fitness into your everyday life, the more natural it becomes.

Get a Massage Nothing will take away the holiday stress quite like a relaxing massage. With all the planning and executing, it’s easy to forget about quality “you” time. Plan for an afternoon at the spa, indulge in a body treatment, and return to the holiday hustle and bustle with a new found sense of energy. Choose to Eat Smart, well most of the time Choose your favorite foods and skip your least favorite. Include vegetables and fruits to keep your plate balanced. Limit the amount of items you chose to put on your plate. You can always go back to add something new. Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. Sit down, get comfortable and enjoy!

Jump into Deep Sleep Here’s a thought, try going to bed! The best way you can attack the day is refreshed from a good night’s sleep. The holidays can be overwhelming, but getting the proper amount of sleep will allow to attack your “to do” list without completely losing it. It remains important to wind down towards the end of the night. Read, listen to calming music, or take a bath. See you in the morning. Practice Healthy Holiday Cooking Baking can be quite therapeutic. Since sharing baked goods is common, and well received during the holidays, try a new (healthy) recipe. The smells wafting from the oven will bring you to a happy place.

Winter Spa Specials Gingerbread n’ Butter Hot Stone Mani & Pedi

This holiday season, dip into a classic that leaves you warm all over. Your feet will be immersed in a rich whole milk and chicory root butter soak that softens and nourishes the skin. Next, a brown sugar and pecan-whiskey polish smooths calluses and leaves a glistening sheen to skin. Finally, you’ll be drizzled and massaged with hot stones in a velvety rich, warm butter blend of emollient shea, cocoa and mango butters that melt into skin, leaving you instantly, irresistibly soft. 50 - 80 MINUTES | $75 - $115

Winter Warm-up Wrap and Massage

Toast to a brief winter escape with this heavenly treatment that starts with a candy cane soak linen wrap that envelops your body in a cocoon of warmth, hydrating your parched winter skin. Next, enjoy a moisturizing marshmallow shea butter massage with antioxidant-rich olive fruit and grapeseed oils that will bring a glistening holiday glow to your skin and leave you with visions of sugarplums dancing in your head. Finally, enjoy a minty-fresh peppermint foot scrub that will remind your feet why it’s the most wonderful time of the year. 50 MINUTES | $150 Don’t forget your member’s discount! Spa treatments only. Winter treatments are available from December 1, 2014, to January 31, 2015. Please call the Spa at (972) 717-2555 to book your next treatment. TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 8

The Ladies of the Sports Club + The WGA=FUN

T

he WGA would like to thank the 55+ members for a successful, fun and competitive year of golf. Our fan favorite Ringer Tournament kicked off the year in fine fashion and our Halloween themed Monster Match rounded it out and proved to be a cat scratching competitive event once again. We are very proud to have renamed our Spring Member Guest the “Lady Nelson Classic” and look forward to building on that theme for years to come. We are looking to add more events in 2015 including another WGA vs MGA event and team competitions. So you Lady Golfers that have not yet joined the WGA, we need you! Let’s make 2015 the best it can be in lowering our handicaps and having some FUN.

For information on how to join, please contact Margie Hogan at champmargie@gmail.com or Susan Ware at wares@sbcglobal.net and check out our photos and tournament list on the club website under the WGA tab.

T

he winter months mean dormant Bermuda. The grass stops growing through the winter months and lays down to create tighter lies on the fairway and around the green. Tighter lies mean you must be more exact in making contact with the ball and ground at the same time. Four keys will help to insure solid contact off tight lies.

Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction tim.cusick@fourseasons.com

1. Choke down on the club. 2. Retain your wristcock longer into your downswing 3. Feel as though the shaft is leaning forward at impact. 4. Turn through the shot with your lower body. Lastly, make a practice swing to the side of the ball and make sure the club bottoms out even with or in front of the golf ball. This training motion will help to insure solid contact if replicated in the real swing. Focusing on solid contact will be a big key to lower scores off dormant Bermuda grass. 9 | TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com

Junior Golf with Grady

T

he Junior Golf program has exploded over the past few months and the Sports Club Eagles have a lot going on! As of November 4, all four phases of the Junior Program are in full swing and well attended. We have recently surpassed 55 kids in the program across all four phases which is very exciting! Everyone in the program has the opportunity to purchase an Eagles team uniform. Each phase has a different color uniform and as the kids progress, their uniform color changes, much like in Karate. The kids love them! Here is a breakdown of the phases of the program: Grady randle, head golf instructor and jr. golf coordinator

grady.randle@fourseasons.com

Phase 1- SNAG Golf (Starting New At Golf) - White Team: Target age, 5-7. We use high quality plastic clubs and hit tennis balls at velcro targets, or in some cases, a full body sticky suit! Needless to say, it is very popular and a great tool for our camps. Then the kids progress into hitting balls with real clubs and try to earn a place in the next phase. This phase practices twice a week for 50 minutes and has a 30 min monthly lesson included in the package. Phase 2- Developmental Team - Green Team: Target age, 8-11 (with some exposure to golf already). These kids compete in NTPGA Team Golf events and are able to participate in our monthly play days at the Club. They have a one hour skills practice and a two hour on-course practice per week. A 50 minute private monthly lesson is also included in the package. We focus on the fundamentals on all areas of the game and teach them how to work their way around the course by following the rules and using proper etiquette. Phase 3- Interclub Team - Blue Team: Target age, 9-14 (with a more advanced skill set). This group practices for 2 hours, Saturday through Sunday and we get more technical with critiquing their swings, rules of golf, course management, trouble shots, etc. We participate in a Junior Interclub League with three other Clubs; Vaquero, Royal Oaks, and Gleneagles. There is a spring and fall season and each course hosts two events at their facility. This team also participates in the monthly play days and has a 50 minute monthly private lesson included in the package. Phase 4- Champions Team - Red Team: Target age, 11-14. This is the newest team to the Jr. Golf Program. They have two hour practices two days during the week. We really dig into their games, expose them to different formats, and get them ready to compete in High School golf. They will compete in Champions division NTPGA Team Golf events and will be able to fill in on Interclub tournaments (based on availability). They are also able to compete in our monthly play days and a 50 minute monthly private lesson is included in the package. Be on the lookout for more team gear, a growing staff to instruct the kids and an upgrade on practice equipment. A more intense skills program will also start in the spring in addition to what is currently being offered and we will turn the tournaments up a notch next year as well! It’s been great watching the kids develop and enjoying the game. I am very excited about what 2015 has to offer. Please feel free to contact Grady for more information. The program is growing fast so now is the perfect time to get on board and grow with us! TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 10

Sports Talk with Robin Scott

T

he holidays are such a special time of year, but bring with them some serious challenges from a health and wellness perspective. Rather than taking the bah humbug outlook, embrace the holidays and all the temptations that come with them. Approach every holiday gathering with a plan to enjoy yourself, only in moderation, and choose food and drinks wisely. Do your homework in advance and know what food and drink choices have less calories, fat, or sugar. Additionally, stay active during the holidays, making sure you schedule time to exercise, and when you do, be focused and make the most of every minute. And speaking of the new year, I’m not a big fan of resolutions. Instead, focus on creating new habits that are achievable and sustainable. The majority of people who set unrealistic new year resolutions end up Robin scott, disappointed and less motivated than ever by the time February rolls around. Don’t be DIRECTOR OF SPORTS one of them! robin.scott@fourseasons.com All the very best for the holiday season and for a prosperous 2015!

rowing up, one of my favorite holiday treats was pumpkin pie. As a teenager I decided to try and grow the seeds from our Halloween pumpkin. I didn’t realize just how easy they would grow and soon had a huge pumpkin patch. I wasn’t sure what to do with all of them, so I decided to see if I could make a pie truly from scratch. I was shocked at how easy it was and how much better it tasted. I proceeded to make A LOT of pies. I think it was at least a couple of years before my family ever wanted to see a pumpkin again. Now every year I take a couple of leftover Halloween pumpkins and make a variety of holiday desserts.

Pumpkin Pie Recipe Pie Filling 1 Cup 1.5 teaspoon 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon ½ teaspoon ½ teaspoon 4 3 Cups 1.5 cans (12oz each) ½ teaspoon

sugar ground cinnamon ground cloves ground allspice ground ginger salt (optional) large eggs pumpkin puree of evaporated milk

Pumpkin Puree Cut a pumpkin in half, remove seeds and cut into 1½ - 2 inch strips, use a vegetable peeler to remove outer skin, cut into large chunks and steam for 20-30 minutes until very tender, allow pumpkin to cool slightly and puree with a blender, mixer or hand blender

vanilla extract (optional)

Mix all ingredients well using a hand blender or mixer, pour into a pie crust and fill it to about one quarter to one half inch from the top. Don’t be surprised if the mixture is very runny. It may start as a soupy liquid, but it will firm up nicely in the oven! TIP 1: Cover the edges of the crust with aluminum foil to keep it from burning. TIP 2: If you put the empty pie crust on your oven rack, with the rack slid partially out, you can fill it there and avoid making a mess while carrying the pie to the oven! TIP 3: If you have left over mix you can make mini pumpkin pie muffins or use the mixture for French toast batter, my personal favorite! Bake the pie at 425 degrees F (210 C) for the first 15 minutes, then turn the temperature down to 350 degrees F (175 C) and bake another 45 - 60 minutes, until a clean knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
