Wine Trail through the Grisons Wine Region

You’ll begin your journey in Maienfeld: at 13.00h you’ll be picked up at the railway station. Drop your luggage at the tour bus and, together with your personal local guide, you’ll visit the historical town centre. Afterwards, your guide will take you on a wine trail through the "Bündner Herrschaft" wine region. Stroll through the vines and enjoy sampling between five and seven different wines in a magnificent cellar, paired with cheese and cold meat specialities from the surrounding mountains and valleys. You continue with a train ride to Schiers. Here you will visit the Kindschi distillery - the region’s largest – and on a short tour you will hear about (amongst other things) the history of the first trading routes of Veltliner wine – the Via Valtellina - where only pack mules and their drivers were able to pass. In addition, you’ll receive a small bottle of Grisons "Röteli" – the perfect pick-me-up for the hiking tour that lies before you! Afterwards it’s onwards with the Rhaetian Railway as far as Klosters where you will spend the night at the 4-star Hotel Vereina.

On the Veltliner Wine Trading Route

The next day, you will hike through the Grisons mountain region along the Via Valtellina: before the time when cars and trains existed, this was the shortest link between the area of Lake Constance and northern Italy. On this former trade route, Veltliner wine, salt, sugar and cattle would be bartered. Your hiking route takes you over the Wolfgang pass and connects the former Walser settlements with the now world-famous tourist destinations of Klosters and Davos.

Scaletta pass: From Davos to the Engadin

After a hearty breakfast at the Grischa – DAS Hotel Davos, you’ll take the Post Bus to Dürrboden in the Dischma valley – the starting point of the second stage of your hiking tour. Before you start your hike over the Scaletta pass, you’ll be given an introduction to the history of the Via Valtellina at the Dürrboden mountain guest house. The ancient water turbine in the cellar of the guest house bears witness to these historic times and you are welcome to see it if you would like to. Now it’s time to get going – you’ve got a long
