Editorial Variety

Dear Editor, this is with reference to one of your articles where a verse was quoted about ‘God’. I’m afraid you created your own verse that God Allah has nothing to do with. I have no idea where you got it from and published it to deceive your readers, insulting their intelligence.

Hello, my name is Nikita and I am a huge fan of Bahrain Confidential. I love your magazine as it offers really nice articles and not just advertisements and pictures. There is always something informative and entertaining to read in Bahrain Confidential. Keep up the good work!

Reader

Nikita Lulla, Reader

Dear Reader, we’re sorry you feel offended but fail to understand why. We are always very careful with what we publish and have no intention what so ever to offend any community in Bahrain. The verse you’re referring to is from a Bedouin Legend and we’ve credited it with the author’s name. We hope we’ve cleared your doubts.

Dear Nikita, thank you for that pat on the back. It’s very encouraging when our readers give us positive feedback. It helps us work harder! We’re always looking out for interesting stories, so if you have one do give us a shout. Reading is not very common, especially in this part of the world. Bahrain Confidential hopes to boost reading in the Kingdom. Wish us luck!

What is Shamekh Al-Bluwi all about? Well, I am a Saudi-Jordanian hybrid! I studied architecture but my passion was always fashion illustrations, and I dream of starting my own fashion brand. I find that people express themselves through their sense of style. As in fashion could serve as an ID – a visual ID if you will. People come with different kinds of style, describing who they are or who they aspire to be. And that inspires me. It makes me want to be part of their personal journey. Fashion is not only clothes and accessories. The right outfit could motivate a person. I am a social person, I view myself as a global citizen, and through fashion, I aspire to impact those around me and hopefully inspire globally in the future. A few years ago, I started getting commissions to draw fashion illustrations for friends and the response has been amazing! That inspired me to start my project of illustrating fashion through Instagram on a daily basis.

art space

In addition to marketing myself through various social media platforms, I am collaborating with some of the biggest retailers and fashion houses around the world.

What is the best part about what you do? The creation process, the story behind the artwork. It’s full of contradictions, layers and textures and has a comic style and feel.

How did you know that this was your calling?

Art is something that captivates me, I’m a true believer that one should do what they love. My passion is my job, and that’s how my true calling was just destiny calling.

What inspires you? I am crazy about details; everything around me from music, places, fashion collections to conversations I have with my friends trigger me to start drawing. It’s funny; sometimes I leave mid-conversation to start an illustration. Ideas come and go. You need to grab the one you need!

What media do you normally use? s $IGITAL ILLUSTRATION 0HOTOSHOP VIA A 7ACOM tablet) s 7ATERCOLORS INK AND MARKERS ON PAPER s !CRYLIC ON CANVAS AND PAPER s -IXED MEDIA

You call yourself an architect, visual artist and a fashion illustrator. Have any of these ever overstepped the other? Not at all! They all match together perfectly. All three in essence are about aesthetics, proportions and design, and that’s the balance right there. After a brief career in computer animation, Henry Paker decided to give comedy a go. He started out doing stand-up in rooms above pubs, then in rooms below pubs and then eventually in the pub itself. In 2008, he won the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year and realised he might be onto something. Since then Henry’s many comic talents have seen him carve out a career as a comic writer, stand up, actor and cartoonist. Henry took his first solo hour of stand-up at the Edinburgh Festival, in 2010 and followed it up with his acclaimed show Cabin Fever, in 2011. His narrative comedy show, The Golden Lizard won him and Mike Wozniak the Best New Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival, in 2011, and went on to sell out a run at London’s Soho Theatre. @henrypaker

Nish Kumar

Laugh with Liam

Stand-up artist, actor, writer and one-third of the sketch group Sheeps, Liam Williams is one of the most talked about young comedians in the circuit. He was a Best Newcomer nominee at the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards, in 2013. Liam was also a finalist at the Amused Moose Laugh-Off and So You Think You’re Funny? competition, in 2010.

Liam Williams

Having mastered the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London alike with his critically acclaimed show, ‘Nish Kumar is a Comedian’, and the follow-up to his solo Fringe debut and sell-out show of 2012, ‘Who Is Nish Kumar?’, Nish Kumar is storming venues up and down the country. The artist has been performing stand-up solo since 2006 and has never looked back since! 2014 is already proving promising for Nish, with a BBC Radio 4 project in development, a regular writing spot on the recently re-released (and namesake) show ‘The Kumars’ (Sky One) and an imminent step over to the small screen on ‘The Alternative Comedy Experience’ (Comedy Central). @MrNishKumar

Reader’s Speak As the countdown begins for the World Cup, talks to football enthusiasts in the Kingdom.

Subin George Sajan What do you think of the World Cup?

Which team apart from your favourite, do you think will win the World Cup?

For football lovers, the World Cup is the epitome of pure ecstasy. The sheer intensity that comes with it is absolutely second to none. And, this year it reaches a whole different level when the World Cup goes to the craziest footballing nation in the world – Brazil!

As much as I hate to admit it, Brazil could win it. They have the most balanced squad in the tournament and their fans will make it really intimidating for opposition teams playing against them.

Which team do you support?

Who do you think is the highest paid player?

I’ve always been a fan of Argentina for as long as I could remember. I’m hoping they get one better on their rivals (Brazil) by winning it on their own turf. With the likes of Messi, Aguero, Higuain & Di Maria leading their attack, I don’t see why not.

Who is your favourite player?

Without a shadow of doubt, Thierry Henry.

38 | Bahrain Confidential | June 2014

That’s easy, the best player on the planet Lionel Messi.

The Story of El Moulid This Ramadan

Describe your passion for InterContinental Regency in 3 words.

To describe my passion for InterContinental Regency, three words are definitely not enough. Let’s try four words instead: “We are always different!”

Highlights for Ramadan

This year is going to be the biggest of all. Our highlight for Ramadan 2014 will be, “El Moulid”. El Moulid has a very vibrant feel to it and is celebrated with unique rituals and characteristics all over Egypt throughout the year. One of the main attractions is the performers who constantly move between different cities. At InterContinental, we intend on selling the ‘experience’ rather than the idea of only Iftar and Ghabga, food and socialising. Everyone can go to a Ramadan tent during the holy month, but not too many will get to actually experience culture during their meals.

What strategy and key differences has been incorporated for InterContinental Regency to be unique in Bahrain?

I am proud that our hotel has well established the 3 P’s: People, Product and Place. The people training programmes at the hotel and the work environment, the quality of service we provide to our guests and only providing the best services to our employees are the core elements of our success. They are the elements that are required for the success of any organisation. We are also proud to say that we have achieved 22% of Bahrainisation . We have so many young Bahraini talents working with us. We strive to train and hire more young Bahraini talents through our IHG Academy.

How is Ramadan 2014 different from 2013?

First of all, half of Ramadan is overlapping with the World Cup activities and we are having activities for this FIFA for the residents of Bahrain. Second, we believe that Ramadan is like a story; just like all the fairytales and stories we remember. Ramadan is a story that is different every year and every year, we should have a new story to tell and show Bahrain. That is why, this year, InterContinental Regency Bahrain is telling you the story of El Moulid.

42 | Bahrain Confidential | June 2014

Rafik Kamel

“If people can adopt behaviours of Ramadan and carry them into the daily life, we will be living in a better world. Ramadan is all about generosity. Today, we assume that Ramadan is all about fasting and celebrating Iftars and Ghabgas; however, we should not forget that it is a holy month that is all about giving.”

interview

New at Saks Fifth Avenue Daniela Karnuts’ first real foray into design was driven entirely by circumstance when Eyjafjallajökull erupted in Iceland, in April 2010. She found herself stranded in India for days and had a local tailor run up a few dresses to fill out her wardrobe until she could return home to London. Those few pieces turned out to be life-changers. Once home, many friends and acquaintances began asking about her dresses and she decided to try her hand at designing a capsule collection. Last month, Karnuts introduced her clothing label, Safiyaa to Bahrain’s fashion circuit with the pre and main Autumn-Winter 2014-15 collection.

Why did you choose the it describe your clothing line?

Safiyaa is my daughter’s name and means pure. My pieces are timeless; though they are relevant with the present times they are not fast fashion and will look great even five years from now. These dresses emphasise your silhouette and are streamlined in terms of design to accentuate the best parts and tuck in the others! I don’t want the dress to outshine the woman, but accentuate her.

You say that your style evolves but never changes. Give us an instance.

I started with very basic structured dresses, long and short in striking colours. I then integrated laces, metallic coated laces, luxurious evening laces and for the summer, matt laces inspired by Ottoman flooring tiles and window drawings. There is always an element that inspires the collection but I’m still creating wearable and elegant dresses.

Daniela Karnuts

and inserts; the next collection is all about inserts, beautiful couture inserts and stripy chiffon over elegant bodycon dresses; very glamorous! While these elements change, what’s consistent is colour. I always have two base fabrics, matt and shine, as people like different things. I always use 7 to 8 vibrant colours to add life. I play a lot with colours, textures and layering to keep it interesting.

What materials do you like Laces have been consistent in the last two collections though not in the first two. I’ve also started doing a lot of laser cutting

44 | Bahrain Confidential | June 2014

It’s important for me to dress the strong, confident real life woman. I want to make her feel special, attractive and a little bit sensual but in a dignified way.

Why did you choose to come to Bahrain?

The Middle East as a whole is a good market and Bahrain was missing (smiles)!

Bahrain?

I would like to start mono brand stores at some stage to grow out the couture angle that we have. We have a 500 sq m atelier with around 12 couture tailors and more coming in and out as we need. Available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bahrain City Centre

REAL OR SYNTHETIC HAIR? Do you go down the path of non-surgical procedures to erase those pesky wrinkles? Or plump your face with a cream that promises to give the same effects? Do you go to the gym and sweat it out and watch the weight slowly drop off, or suffer by having to consume nasty looking ‘so-called food’ for three meals a day with the assurance of quick weight loss and improved health?

Giving up hair

C

hoices, choices and more choices that promise us pretty much eternal youth and we face the same problem when it comes to our hair. Everyone wants thick, glossy, healthy looking hair and most women would kill to be able to add length to it too. But again, what do we do? There’s every type of potion and procedure available at our fingers tips to make our wish come true but at a price. Some of these procedures require patience or can be painful, expensive and involve maintenance which most of us don’t have the time for. So turn to the next best thing-hair extensions. The right hair extensions can give volume and length, thus changing one’s entire appearance in an instant. But the big question is, ‘Do you go for real or synthetic hair?’ There are many ethical reasons these days why not to choose real hair and many added advantages to using synthetic hair.

52 | Bahrain Confidential | June 2014

These days, there are so many options available to change and improve one’s looks. There’s really no excuse for feeling unhappy about our appearance anymore, providing we know what we’re doing!

Real or Synthetic Hair: Appearance

There used to be a time when real hair would ‘out-shine’ (pardon the pun) synthetic hair due to the poor quality. But those days are long gone due to the demand for synthetic hair in western countries. Synthetic Hair technology has advanced so much in recent years, that it’s virtually impossible to tell the difference between real and synthetic hair when it comes to the quality, colour and thickness. More importantly, synthetic hair doesn’t come with the ‘hot topic’ amongst many cultures of ‘who was wearing my hair before me?’ Do you really want to be wearing someone else’s hair who may not have willingly given it up? Or forced to have it cut to feed their families? I know I don’t. At least with synthetic hair you can confidently wear it knowing that it didn’t destroy someone’s life in the process of making it. Nor did it belong to anyone before you. Naomi Campbell bald from hair extensions

beauty

After Effortless Hair Extensions

Real or Synthetic: Longevity

The next thing you have to decide when buying your hair extensions – is value for money. Most real hair extensions can last for up to six months, depending upon how they are cared for. Synthetic hair can last much longer. Plus it doesn’t shed, tangle or frizz as easily as real hair.

Before

Real or Synthetic: Care and Styling

Synthetic hair extensions can be styled in exactly the same manner as you would your own hair, with the same products and styling tools. They are also washed in the same manner as you would real hair extensions. But they have the added advantage. Synthetic hair dries quicker or does not fall out as much. Synthetic hair extensions can also be styled and curled like natural hair using heated curling irons, hot iron or a hair dryer. Plus due to ‘memory technology’, it can hold a curl longer. The Various Application Methods Hair extensions can be applied in myriad ways. Some methods can be done at home, while some methods require a professional to do it. • Glue Probably one of the most well-known of all the extensions, strands of real or synthetic hair is literally glued as close to the root of your own hair and can look excellent provided they’re looked after it correctly. But no matter how careful you are – glue extensions can seriously damage your own hair by making it thin or worse, fall out. Plus there’s quite a bit of maintenance involved. • Clip-On Hair Extensions These are temporary but do not have any of the disadvantages that other types of extensions may have. They can often require assistance to put in and depending on the thickness of your own hair the clips

may become visible. If worn too often the clips can end up pulling on your own hair, eventually causing damage to it. • Effortless Hair Extensions (New to the market) Effortless hair Extensions take seconds to put in without any assistance and requires no clips, glue, tape or glue. Available in 2 lengths 16’ and 24 inch, made from the most advanced synthetic hair technology – FEELsoREAL. Effortless Hair Extensions comes in 21 colours, 3 European styles and 5 Asian/ Afro styles and can be styled, washed, blow dried, curled and hot ironed and causes NO DAMAGE to your own hair! Majority of us women want beautiful, thick long hair in an instant but without the damage that most other hair extensions can cause, the ethical issues that come with real hair and the dependency of having to rely on someone else to put them in. Therefore, we highly recommend Effortless Hair Extensions. These extensions are so new to the market that they’re still not available in the UK. Yet, they’ve already won a host of beauty awards and are available in Bahrain and across the region. Protect Your Strongest Asset

“Tooth enamel is the toughest part of your body, even stronger than bones. Despite that, a can of coke can wear down the most resilient building block”, says Dr.Shailesh Rojekar, Endodontist at Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital.

EDITORIAL?

There are just so many bacteria that can infect the roots of your teeth. With an infected root, there are millions of potential culprits that can destroy your teeth. “What causes infection in your mouth may be completely harmless in an another person’s mouth”, Dr. Shailesh explains. To make matters worse, the environment within the tooth can cause bacteria to change behaviour so that they don’t do what you would expect them to do elsewhere in the body. There are other differentiators in play too like smoking, drinking, and diet which can all affect and cause the root to become infected. Treatments have come a long way in just a few years. “Root canals used to be synonymous with nightmare dentist

scenarios; they were a short hand for fear and pain.” Nowadays, things are better and once identified, 99% of teeth can be treated to end pain immediately and in majority of cases can also save the teeth. The easiest way to avoid all dental procedures – whether painful or not, is to look after your teeth from the moment you get them. For adults, everything starts with decay and the only way to prevent decay from spreading is to brush after every meal and floss regularly”. Dr. Shailesh insists that flossing is the only way to clean between the teeth. Brushing cannot reach there and mouthwashes are definitely not a substitute. He also asserts that you must brush after

eating or drinking anything. The easiest way to do this, he says, short of brushing your teeth 15 times a day is, “don’t snack or indulge in sweet, fizzy drinks”- he wasn’t joking about this! When asked what other foods should be avoided, “I would not want bread left on my teeth. There are natural sugars in everything and they can all harm the teeth”. A healthy lifestyle is really important in promoting good oral health. For more information on Gulf Dental Hospital and its doctors, call +963 17 741444 to book an appointment. interview

The Best Of The Best In conversation with Dr. Mahmood Abbas, Ibn Al Nafees Hospital’s Consultant Pediatric Surgeon and Pediatric Urologist What is your specialty?

I am a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon and a Pediatric Urologist at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital, dealing with children, adolescents and youth. The areas I specialise in are: • Circumcision • Inguinal hernia • Undescended testis • Gastrointestinal Disorders • Anal problems • Urinary disorders • Surgery of cysts, Abscess, Lipoma, ingrown toenail, tongue tie

Do you find communicating with pediatric patients, children to be specific, quite challenging? If so, why? I feel one of the challenges or issues rather of being a Pediatric Surgeon is communication. Communicating with children can be difficult. It is in fact one of the areas we need to be well trained in. It’s important to encourage kids to express their feelings, that many times are evident from their appearance, face, daily activities and functions of organs. Most of the information we receive is from the parents. However, a number of pediatric problems in children have clear signs and symptoms that specialists can identify. It all depends on the environment the child is in. If you put the child in a calm and relaxed environment, they are very co-operative and hence it becomes easy to communicate with them.

What, in your opinion are the important questions patients need to ask their Urologist before surgery?

It’s always important to gather the necessary information from the doctors or surgeons in order to make an informed decision. Some of the important questions one needs to ask are:

62 | Bahrain Confidential | June 2014

Daniela Karnuts

• Find out if your doctor has enough experience regarding the concerned issue. • How long should your child fast before a surgery? • Gather information about the procedure, and complications that can occur. • Also gather information on the anesthesia used prior to surgery. • Post surgery information (recovery period, when can the child have his first meal after surgery, first bath, etc) • When can the child return to normal activities? • Care of the wound

How do you find a balance between lifestyle and your career choice in medicine?

Probably for many physicians, this might be a problem. Personally, I try to balance both my professional and personal life. I try my best to divide and allot different days for clinics and theatres. This gives me a chance to spend quality time with the family doing things the children love like cycling, swimming, picnics etc. For more information, call Ibn Al Nafees Hospital, Tel. +973 17828282

A CHAT WITH ABDULRAHMAN GHALI Anoeska Drent interviews one of Bahrain’s National Basketball team players.

Anoeska Drent

I’ve always found Ghali’s game wicked and so I wanted to know more about him. Meeting him for the first time made me feel really small; he is about 2.06 centimetres, while I am 1.50 centimetres. Known as Hamani by his friends, Ghali began very young, played in the neighbourhood and was trained by his father. Unfortunately he was not allowed to play for a club until he finished school in 2006. In his last year at school he played for Ali Club where he learned so much about the sport. Today, he enjoys playing with his team mates who he sees as his brothers; spending so much time together has helped them develop a lot of respect for each other.

How is playing for Muharraq Club different from what you did before this? At this stage, I am still the new guy so I am still adjusting and need to prove myself.

How do you stay in control during a match?

It’s all about control. Sometimes I need to ignore the referee because I can get really nervous and after 5 mistakes you need to leave the court (and I am famous for that!).

Which countries did you play against?

I played against China, Philippines, and more.

How was your experience playing against China? It was challenging to say the least! They have really young and tall players; their shortest player was taller than I, 2.1 centimetres.

How do you prepare for your game?

I train 3 times a week and sleep for at least 6 to 7 hours. I try not to think about what’s going to happen, too much but it doesn’t always work.

Abdulrahman Ghali in action

An incident related to the game you will always remember?

The one where Isa town beat Ali Club came as a surprise. Another surprise was winning the championships this year; 3 of our best players happened to get a foul out; everyone thought we were going to lose but we won!

How does your family feel about your basketball carrier?

My dad is really proud and my mum watches all my games on TV.

Have you ever trained anybody for basketball?

What is your view of a coach?

It’s a tough job where in you have to consider every player’s mood or problems they’re facing, if any. At the same time you need to make them play the best they possibly can.

Do you think young talent in Bahrain is supported?

Yes. Zain has a programme for talented young players.

What are your plans this summer? I hope to spend my days in a basketball camp where I can work on my game.

Yes, the girls team in college.

We would like to say a Huge Thank You and Goodluck to Anoeska and family who have left the island.

F

raser Suites Seef Bahrain has been honoured for the second consecutive year as Bahrain’s Leading Serviced Apartments 2014 at the 21st Annual World Travel Awards (WTA) Middle East gala ceremony, in Dubai. The award is a recognition of Fraser Suites Bahrain’s commitment to excellence, hard work and devotion to provide unique products and services. Frasers Hospitality brand maintained last year’s success by picking-up a quartet of awards - Middle East’s Leading Serviced Apartment Brand 2014, Dubai’s Leading Serviced Apartments 2014 and Qatar’s Leading Serviced Apartments 2014. WTA was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate

excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire. Frasers’ intrinsic understanding of the importance of quality service and the unique needs of business executives facilitated another award for the Frasers Hospitality brand as The Best Serviced Apartment Company 2014, by Business Traveller Middle East. The awards ceremony was attended by more than 300 travel industry managers from the region. Frasers Hospitality Pte Ltd’s portfolio currently stands at 92 properties, in 49 key gateway cities, and more than 15,500 apartments worldwide, including those in the pipeline. The Middle East will continue to be a key growth area for Frasers Hospitality Pte Ltd (Frasers), which is on target to add six more properties by 2015, consolidating its presence as a leading provider of premium serviced residences in the region. Responding to the increasing demand for premium serviced residences by expatriates and business travellers, with arrivals expected to hit 149 million in the Middle East, by 2030, the new properties in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, will more than double Frasers’ portfolio in the Middle East, which currently includes Fraser Suites Seef Bahrain, Fraser Suites Dubai and Fraser Suites Doha. Travellers to the Middle East will be able to look forward to the opening of Fraser Suites

Bravo, Bennigans! Peter Lyons, General Manager of Bahrain Family Leisure Company tells us what makes Bennigans a favourite with foodies in the Kingdom. How has 2014 been for Bennigans?

It’s been great! We are in the process of opening a second outlet at Amwaj Marina. Our restaurant in Bahrain works in line with the brand’s ethos while keeping in mind the local market. The CEO of Bennigans visited us recently and was really impressed which is an accolade for us. Also, the Vice President of Bennigans was here and he loved how our service style has changed over the last one year.

What would you attribute this success to?

We focus particularly on service standards and style. Our staff always tries to make a personal connection with the guest. It’s taken a long time to bring about this change but I believe hospitality can be taught. Like one of my colleagues aptly put it, we are rebooting our service! Ask a guest about a restaurant they went to a month later and they may not remember the food as much as they do the experience. Another element is using fresh ingredients, the right produce and resources in our food. Our guests love our food and our service.

What new ideas and promotions are in store?

We are looking to tap into the Military market this year. For instance, sometimes we invite these guests for a drink, and it’s on us! We are nice like that (laughs). We are drawing a lot of attention with our steak challenge which is really popular with our American customer base. We are planning to change the menu as well which will be launched after Ramadan. We’re tweaking our cocktail menu too. Sometimes brands try to change too much and this affects their customer base. But we’re doing a number of small things and evolving slowly. For instance we celebrated St Patrick’s Day at Bennigans which was a hit. We tried something different with our Irish coffee shots on each table and guests loved it. Attention to detail is very important.

What’s one of the best things about Bennigans?

I really think we serve one of the best breakfasts. Our portions are huge!

You’ve been around for year? Have you enjoyed your experience so far?

Bahrain’s a really nice place and from a work point of view I love it. It’s much more logical and people are quite professional and friendly. Bennigans falls under Bahrain Family Leisure Company. To make your booking call, Tel. +973 1781 3750 Peter Lyons

Promoting Diversity Wisely

Both nationals and expatriates need to understand the integration process clearly says Katarzyna Richter, Cross Cultural Psychologist.

F

acing people of different cultures is a common while living in Bahrain. Non-Bahrainis make up nearly 50 per cent of the population. Multiculturalism is a great concept, promoting diversity, openness, and learning. It helps us develop tolerance towards those from other parts of the world, enriching all our lives. But is it that simple? Over the years, multiculturalism has created problems like poverty, crime, burgeoning extremist groups, weakening social trust, and racism. This may have led to greater segregation in society as noted by several influential politicians, scholars and executives. According to a research published by the Journal of Sociology, multiculturalism has been declared a failure both in Europe and in the Anglophone West. Political leaders including Australia’s former Prime Minister, John Howard; former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy; and UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron have publicly declared that the attempt to create a multicultural society has failed. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, “The socalled ‘multikulti’ concept where people live side-by-side happily - did not work.” These problems are mostly visible in countries which pursued an ethnic diverse migration policy, such as Canada and Australia. So, what went wrong? The lack of integration of different ethnic and cultural groups with existing laws and values is the problem. For immigrants, the integration path is clear: understanding local values and languages results in better jobs and business. Not knowing local laws may mean jail. This path is established and evolves fairly easily because countries can change immigration selection or improve

regulation and law enforcement at will. But for nationals the path is less clear and thus more challenging. They must acquire the patience and tolerance for foreign cultures while new immigrants learn. Also, there inevitably will be individuals who behave badly in any culture. Filtering them out, as they disrupt society will demand an extraordinary open mind. We are fortunate that Bahrain a country led by enlightened leaders, committed to promoting the country as a diversity-friendly place, displaying warm Arabic hospitality towards people who decide to make Bahrain their home. The recently organised event “Bahrain for All & All for Bahrain” is a very thoughtful initiative to bring diverse communities together, bridging the gap between expatriates and locals. Experiencing different aspects of a range of cultures, such as music, dance and food is great. Such multi-cultural projects appeal as entertainment and are good for encouraging interest and curiosity. That said, in order to truly integrate with other cultures we also need to learn their values, and the best way to do that is to live within the said cultural values. That’s perhaps why some attention must be focused on creating exchange programs where participants actually live through all the aspects of everyday life of a certain culture. This does not necessarily mean the expense and commitment of sending people to live overseas; but rather includes easier ideas such as locally organised workshops that would involve people of various backgrounds to work together on a project, or swapping households for a few days. And always remember, developing cultural intelligence means stepping out of our comfort zone!

WOMEN LEADER’S IN BAHRAIN Sana Nooruddin, a fashion design student in London cheers for some of the most talented and successful Bahraini women.

If we all thought and acted alike, we would be living in a vanilla world. How boring? Nothing would be unique. Originality is crucial to success which comes to those who maintain a positive state of mind. This month, I’d like to share a list of Bahraini women who have achieved success in their respective fields. Wafa Obaidat is an inspiring woman and owns her PR agency in Bahrain. Catering to a high profile list of clients, she is also the creator of a well-known online magazine which she created while she was obtaining her degree. It has gained her popularity internationally. Lulwa Al Amin adds another feather to Bahrain’s fashion scene. She launched the first collection of her fashion label in 2011 and recently displayed her latest collection at the first Dubai Vogue Fashion Week. Bahrain’s most sought after designer Reem Buquais-Rivera recently styled the display of the Hackett London showroom in Bahrain City Centre and is the winner of the Top Stylist contest. Amina Al Abbasi became the first Bahraini artist to display her work at Harrods, in London and recently inaugurated her own Amina Art Gallery in Riyadat Mall. Blending traditional Bahraini art with contemporary styles, she gets her work printed on iPhone cases, pillow covers, and hand bags which are her best sellers. Letter From Bahrain

“…often we fear the judgement of others, are afraid of failure - or even scared of success.”

lthough we all have ideas to explore, a book to write, or a desire to paint, outside of a narrow circle of trusted people, many of us are uncomfortable expressing our true feelings; only a few have the confidence to pursue their dreams. As a journalist, many assume I’m extrovert, the reality is very different; after forty years the desire to write became stronger than the fear of realising my goal - writing for a living.

challenging, broadcasting for Deutsch Welle is far more relaxed. To share, stimulate dialogue, or create, we have to “go public” Darwin held back for 34 years, fearful of how others would judge his heretical theory. Anxiety is a small price to pay for the freedom to explore and say what you think - I’ve never regretted taking a leap of faith. Sharing of ideas and creativity are frequently confused, we must collaborate, discuss, and share; but creativity is often a lonely activity only social in that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.

So many fears, so many ideas to share; I was afraid of the judgement of others, of failure – and even success.

I write on my much-loved MacBook, on a table overlooking the sea; consuming copious cups of coffee to deliver me from self-doubt, and help make connections between the seemingly unrelated.

Fearful of a million disapproving listeners, my first live, prime-time, news broadcast for Radio New Zealand was “gut churning”; with a programme intended to be socially

a clear mind, I capture ideas on post-it notes and emails to myself. In the evenings and nights, inhibitions disappear, associations are clearer, and phrases easily come to mind - from the evening twilight, my best work emerges. As a member of the Bahrain Writers’ Circle, I know that each of us has an idea to explore and share; ask yourself where you stand on an issue - any topic that’s important to you - then regularly write or blog about it, soon you’ll become comfortable disclosing your feelings. You’ll still have doubts - is it good enough? Does it make sense? Will people agree? Don’t be afraid. Porsche

Boxster GTS Nick Cooksey tests the new GTS in Palma de Mallorca.

S

o here I am in Mallorca – my mission; to try out Porsche’s new Boxster GTS. Have I ever said before how much I love my job? What better way to test the top of the range version of one of the world’s most acclaimed sports convertibles than by driving it during early summer around the beautiful island of Mallorca? Porsche are launching their GTS versions of both the Boxster and Cayman which are essentially the same car; the Boxster being a convertible making the Cayman incrementally lighter so slightly more powerful. Of course there are other differences but they are relatively minor. The Boxster may be recognizable from earlier models, but this is now a completely different and far superior beast to what it once was. It’s incredibly well balanced, super responsive, comfortable, good looking, has near perfect steering, and can leave even a moderately competent driver feeling like a pro. Driving through surprisingly frequent tunnels on the testing route, the crackling note coming out of the black tailpipes was hands down fantastic. The 3.4-litre flat-six motor, designed with a free-flow exhaust, sounds exhilarating. I decided not to play the sound system (which I’m sure

is superb), so as to enjoy these adrenalinerushing sound effects, made even better thanks to Porsche’s Performance Exhaust System (standard with the GTS, an optional extra otherwise). The car can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in around 4.7seconds, and produces 330 bhp which meant that I was able to overtake slower moving traffic on busy winding roads with superb ease.

don’t come cheap - smoked headlamp lenses add nearly $1,000 to the price and seem to me both expensive and pointless. Well, GTS is a fully loaded Porsche and a bit more – it also has different bumpers, black 20” alloys (instead of 19”), an extra 15 horsepower which frankly is hardly noticeable, and of course a GTS badge which will mean more to some people than to others.

“The Boxster may be recognizable from earlier models, but this is now a completely different and far superior beast to what it once was.” So what exactly is a GTS? And what makes it different (and about $10,000 more expensive) than the standard S model? Well, Porsches like every other premium German car brand are sold as base models unlike, for example, Japanese cars which typically come fully loaded. So if you want Suspension Management (which you should – it lowers the car and improves handling), or you require smoked headlamp lenses, then you must buy them as optional extras, and as you probably already know, they

So is the GTS worth the extra money over the S? Personally, if I were considering buying for myself I would want probably two thirds of the extras and so would opt for the standard S model and save myself a bit of money. One last thing –Many people says that the Cayman/Boxster for sheer driving pleasure is currently the best value sports car on the market. I do not disagree!

Earthlings:The Real Animals

C

onnected, unknowingly, to one another; linked as unique life forces that share the only universe we are ever to know, and ever to call home: earth. Yes, we are the earthlings. We are the holders of the footsteps that have treaded along the lands. Expanding, we have even made our mark on the moon. We have relished in the society of our creation and both ruined and renewed parts of our world. But saying, of course we are the only inhabitants on the planet, would be a lie. Animals, as we call them; souls that have been nurtured inside of creatures we do not understand. The way I see it, animals have just as much right to live freely as humans do. 50, 50 – that was the deal, right?

“...eating meat isn’t the issue; it’s how you take that creature’s life away that fills me with disgust.” A deal it might have been years, decades, even centuries ago; but not today. Today, we run chains that encourage the act of taking away one’s life. A mere animal, yes but still a life stolen; killed sometimes due to the brutal torture encountered and then packed away to be put into our foods. Slaughter houses mock the truth. Nobody really knows what happens behind the metal gates? My viewpoint is this: eating meat isn’t the issue; it’s how you take that creature’s life away that fills me with disgust. Not a simple slit in the throat. A full-length blade saw, axing a poor defenseless creature to eternal death. We all die eventually, but I for one would most certainly avoid being hacked away at, like some old piece of wood. And the worst part is that it’s global, not national; daily, not annual. Gas-chambers: a steel box in which both humans and animals have suffered in. Filled with gas, the air becomes thick and impossible to breathe in, and the living creature inside dies within twenty minutes; slowly and painfully. This is mostly used when getting rid of unwanted dogs and cats that “take up too much space”. Hack-saw: used to hack baby seals to death; hammering the helpless animal deep into the snow, burying it into an early icy grave. (Note: usually this is the method of killing, so the animal dies due to many cruel stabs all across its body before completely bleeding out.)

What can you do to help? Simple. • Don’t inflict heartless pain upon an innocent animal. It is not funny or amusing. It is just plain stupid. • Become members on online websites that are 100 per cent against animal cruelty. Join as many as you possibly can and help ensure protection for the next vulnerable victim. • Report cases of animal torture or cruelty. In most countries, it is against the law to purposely hurt an animal and so the people harming the animal will either be jailed for illegal crimes committed or will have to pay a fairly pricey fine.

Taste Life! John Ridley shares a Ramadan recipe.

A

s the Holy month of Ramadan approaches, many will be planning celebrations and extended family gatherings to share in breaking the fast. In sharing good food and Arabian hospitality, it’s not uncommon, especially towards the end of the month, for hosts to take several days arranging and preparing meals. Traditionally, the fast is broken with dates, water, and yogurt - followed by a large communal meal after Maghreb prayers; but for those of us who need something slightly more substantial at sunset, Fatteh is perfect; made for sharing, it’s soft, nutritious, and easily digested. Fatteh is especially popular as a mid morning snack in the Lebanese Mediterranean city of Tripoli; market traders take turns to mind each other’s stalls whilst others retire to catch up on the news of the morning, drink coffee, and share a bowl of the freshly prepared dish with friends. Cafe owners throughout the old market compete to serve the steady stream of customers with their treasured, closely guarded recipe, handed down through the generations.

John R Ridley

The word “fatteh” means “to crumble” in Arabic; consisting of a base layer of small pieces of stale bread, toasted or fried until crisp, followed by a layer of the main ingredient, usually steamed chickpeas or minced lamb, then topped with yoghurt, hot clarified butter and pine nuts. The blend of textures is delightful, each bite, a combination of the crisp toasted bread, the soft main filling, the velvety yoghurt, and the smooth hot melted butter. It can be served as a breakfast, or as an accompaniment to a larger meal; whenever you serve it, be sure to make plenty, guests always ask for more.

Method:

Ingredients (Serves 4)

• Add the crushed garlic to the yogurt, mix well and pour over the chickpeas.

• 250 grams plain yogurt

• Soak chickpeas for 24 hours in cold water with a teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice. • Drain, rinse in clean water, then gently simmer in fresh water until soft, then drain. • Meanwhile, toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan, and set aside to cool. • Fry the bread in beef or lamb fat until crisp, drain, and sprinkle the bread and half the pine nuts over the bottom of a serving bowl. • Layer the chickpeas over the bread, and sprinkle with cumin and salt.

• 250 grams chickpeas

• Top with melted or caramelised butter and the remaining pine nuts.

• 2 crushed cloves garlic

• Garnish with a sprig of mint.

• 1 teaspoon cumin

• Serve immediately and enjoy.

• 2 large flat breads, torn into cubes. • 20 grams raw pine nuts • 20 grams butter • Beef or lamb fat, or sesame oil, for frying

BBQ Nite at The K Hotel

Review by Melissa Nazareth

The K Hotel is always coming up with exciting promotions. Having dined at its restaurants many a time before, I was sure that their BBQ Theme Night was going to be a treat. Before I speak about the food I must mention that the ambiance at all of The K Hotel’s restaurants is great. The barbecue buffet is being served at Klouds Restaurant, a dim-lit, spacious fine dining space, perfect for the family or that special someone. Another thing that stands out here is the impeccable service. As soon I entered the restaurant, the staff welcomed me with a smile and offered me a seat. The aroma of freshly barbecued delights and the sizzle of the chunks of meat and fish at the live counter are persuasive to say the least; a sip or two of water and I was all set to dig in! I started off with the salad bar, a spread of crunchy veggies whipped up together in unique styles; there’s an interesting noodle salad, a potato salad and other meze

options that really work up your appetite. I recommend you tell the chef your barbecue preference in advance so you can jump into the next course without ado. There are a variety of options to choose from at the barbecue counter including fish, king fish and hammour; chicken, drumsticks and fillet; beef tenderloin and sausage; I tried them all. The main course also includes side dishes like roasted veggies, roasted potatoes, corn with peppers and pilaf rice. I was stuffed by the end of my meal, happy nonetheless. I didn’t regret anything I took on my plate and particularly loved the hammour; my host insisted I try it and believe me it’s a practical ten on ten! You can wash down this feast with a variety of wines and other beverages. Try this one, your perfect midweek treat; you’re sure to love it! Priced at BD5++ per head.

Craig David

Nick Cooksey meets Craig David (13 UK Top 10 hits sold 14 million + albums) during his recent Bahrain visit. On what he wants to do in Bahrain (apart from his event)

I’m happy to be back in Bahrain, I was here in 2003. This time what I really want to do is attend the F1 Grand Prix. I was in KL in Malaysia but because of bad timing I missed the race. Anyway I was told it would be really humid while the Bahrain event is going to be a night race so will be cooler. I’m super excited as this will be my very first F1 Grand Prix.

On his pad in Miami:

It’s a penthouse. I grew up living in a council estate overlooking a car park so I really appreciate being able to live somewhere with an amazing view. I’ve seen some beautiful places around the world, and my home is one of the best.

On his Ferrari:

you don’t start to answer these questions you end up going round in circles.

On why his event is called TS5:

As a kid I always wanted to own a Ferrari – a red one, like I guess many kids do. When I moved to Miami I knew that this was the time to get it.

On being “spiritual”:

I believe in looking after myself so I eat healthy and I train hard. I feel like I’m very much on a spiritual journey. I keep asking what is the real purpose of life? What is it that makes you happy? What are you really doing some of the things you’re doing for and what are you hoping to achieve? For me, if

TS5 is the name of my home, my apartment number, in Miami. Most people don’t know that which is great as it adds a bit of mystery to it. It all started with my having weekly house parties which became really popular locally, then a UK radio station took up with it and it gained an international following with the result that I’ve been invited now to replicate my house parties all over the world. They are basically blending R and B with Hip Hop with me harmonizing over things. Doing private shows is fantastic, but TS5 has been like a diamond in the rough for me as it’s put me on current radio in the UK DJing and allowed me to take things at a different angle rather than just saying “so here’s my new single”

HOROSCOPES Aries

21 March-19 April

You’ll be highly charged for the entire month. Pay attention to your body’s signals and don’t overtax it. The restlessness you are experiencing is hard to endure. Take your time, but don’t fight against changes.

Taurus

20 April-20 May

The first half of June brings pleasant things and enjoyable moments; celebrate them with those close to your heart. Be flexible. Communication continues to be most important; clear your path of any misunderstandings.

Gemini

21 May-21 June

During the first third of June it’s about surrender: surrender to life, to love, to everyday routine, to truth. In the second third of the month expect innumerable interesting possibilities and challenges. Yoga, mantra chanting and meditation support you. vera wang

Cancer

Pluto and Uranus put your mind in turmoil but only want to liberate you from stifling shackles. Emotional entanglements that have kept you imprisoned long enough will be swept out of the way.

Leo

Sagittarius 23 November21 December

Jupiter moves into Gemini, and everything becomes easier; you are more open to all sorts of ideas, different views and new contacts. Although now your horizon can expand enormously, you may fall victim to your fantasies.

Virgo

Things to know Taxis

Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware! Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
