Letter Why is it that each time someone mentions Indonesia, most of us instantly assume Bali or Jakarta? I definitely want to visit both, some day but last month I discovered another province – a paradise if I may, untouched and rooted in tradition, at least most of it. It was a welcome break from the heat with the temperatures just above 20 degrees. I’ve been to many a beach destination but nothing prepared me

Last week, when my smartphone went dark and my PC fell prey to a virus, I was left with no choice but to endure the unbearable consequence – a life without gadgets. Fortunately, the phase lasted for only a few days. That’s when I realised what James Prabakar (Pg82, September 2014, VIVA article) meant by us being ‘Glued to Our Smartphones’. A very thought provoking article, I must say! Karan Dwij, 30 years, Techie in Bahrain

Anup J Kattukaran
art space Bahrain Confidential October 2014
With a knack of capturing every memorable moment on your special day, Anup J Kattukaran, better known as Anup J Kat, sure seems to have a glistening passion under his belt. But, why, how, Bahrain Confidential's Jenny Thomas had to know more. Meet our favourite Indian wedding photographer.
Profession Meet Passion- I am the Chief Optimist of a design agency. My encounter with photography was purely by chance. Not only do I enjoy shooting great picture, but also I like the fact that it creates a long lasting memory. My sense of humour seems to be working to my benefit. That’s how I get to know the couple I am shooting, that’s primarily what helps create the moment. The joy I have when I hand over 1000 images after the ‘post production’ to the couple and just grasping their response to my work- it’s an that feeling that makes me want to do it all over again. I love the atmosphere at weddings and what I enjoy the most is shooting candid moments. Along with being a wedding photographer, I have recently been exploring underwater photography. There’s always something new worth learning. The Moment I Realised This Was My Passion- As I mentioned, I stumbled into the world of photography. The AD agency I was working for required a few images for a campaign and I stepped in to take those images. I started with a point and shoot camera and slowly it worked its way into becoming my one of my biggest passions. Also my tryst with wedding photography was an accident. I shot a friend’s wedding and the images were, how do I put it, well appreciated, and things just progressed from there. Why Weddings? “WHY NOT?” Weddings are fun and who doesn’t love the food at weddings, when you have the best fare to sample? You get to meet so many people and hear their perspective about life and to me that is very interesting. But apart from that, weddings are also quite challenging. A wedding day is unique to the couple and it is their most special day, that just means as a photographer I need to do my best to ensure that their best day is captured well. Convincing Couples To Play Along With Your Idea- I got lucky as most of couples who I shot for were crazy enough to play along with my whacky ideas. Great ideas make shooting weddings fun. It does not feel like a job anymore!

I Have Asked Him To- “Drop your pants” A couple wanted me to shoot them in the bedroom. And as I entered, I asked the groom to drop his pants. Which he did! The Best Compliment I Received- “I like your eggs” This was the morning I made breakfast for my wife. Yes, That is what she said! My Inspiration- The people I shoot. Everybody has a story. How I Would Like To Be Remembered- I would like to be remembered first as a good human being, an awesome dad and an artist who made people smile. Under The Photographer Suit, Who Am I? Under the photographer suit, I’m Superman to my 4-month-old son, best husband to my wife and second best son to my mom (what can I do, she likes my younger brother more)!

THE LEGEND LIVES ON The Descendant of the Zenith Military Chronographs Zenith draws inspiration from the rugged, high-performance timepiece that they had built in 1997 for the French Air Force and proudly presents an eminently sporty version called, “El Primero Stratos Flyback Rainbow”.
While the El Primero Stratos Flyback Rainbow naturally beats at the frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour enabling 1/10th second precision, it is also equipped with a date display, a telemetric scale, and above all with the famous fly back function. The 45.5 mm steel case is topped by a rotating bezel bearing an aluminum ring. The rounded sapphire crystal is shaped like an astrodome that enables astronavigation. The equally transparent engraved sapphire case-back reveals the fascinating mechanism of the world’s most accurate series-produced calibre.
Let’s talk about the dial, shall we!
The minutes counter at 3 o’clock appears in colours enabling nighttime readings in infrared-lit cockpits, while the hours are displayed at 6 o’clock and the small seconds at 9 o’clock. The white superluminal hour-markers make a striking contrast with the black of the dial and case, while the chronograph sweep seconds hand stands out in red. The inner bezel ring bearing a telemetric scale creates an overall depth effect. *Prices available on request Fore more information, Call Asia Jewellers on Tel. +973 1753 5344

Through LCF, she aims to educate fashion design aspirants about the industry. “If you have an education and the know-how in your area of expertise you can be in control. For instance, you can tell tailors at a factory how exactly you want them to work on the fabric instead of them dictating to you.” LCF offers a comprehensive package to its clients – everything from fashion design seminars

to PR – and currently has 11 clients including fashion designers, interior designers, film directors and educational institutions. “I focus on building long term relations with my clients,” says Hamra. Eleganza is a classic example of how LCF’s PR arm is successfully taking Middle Eastern brands to the next level. Impressed with LCF’s professionalism and work, Khalid Faqeeh approached Hamra for LCF’s PR services for his brand. Eleganza also showcased its collections at the LCF organised fashion show in Bahrain, in June, this year. Hamra says, “When I saw the collection at our show, I knew it had the potential for an international market because unlike traditional Thaubs which are white, Eleganza uses colour themes like brown, grey and green; accessories like zips and different fabrics which consumers in international markets like. We are currently marketing Eleganza in the region – Qatar and Kuwait – and in December will showcase the brand at the popular Clothes Live Show 2014.” Since 1960, Eleganza has been passed through generations. “We’re expanding the traditional Thaub
Even kids love wearing Thaubs by Eleganza!
to international markets and a younger audience, with more contemporary designs as recommended by LCF,” says Khalid. “So far our collections have focused on men and kids but after we collaborated with LCF we’re looking to enter the women’s segment with the fashion show in the UK.” “London is a melting pot of cultures, so don’t be surprised if you see an English woman wearing a men’s Thaub!” exclaims Hamra. She goes on to add, “We’ve positioned Eleganza in a way that the brand maintains its exclusivity without the prices burning a hole in your pocket.” “Hamra and her team of 7 at LCF are extremely talented, hardworking and professional,” says Khalid, with a smile and is happy to recommend LCF to his fellow designers. H
enna has been a staple foe every Eid celebration. Centuries ago, it was made at home by grinding henna leaves with water and oil to create its paste; women would apply this to their hands and feet with no consideration of design like today. Today, henna is considered one of the most unique accessories – and it comes straight from our region! During the holidays, us girls love to gather together and get our hands and feet covered with intricate designs to finish off our Eid look. This Eid, Wojooh celebrates this tradition in a fantastic way. Pass by any Wojooh store during October 1st – 10th to try some nice design by Wojooh’s favourite henna artists!

You can't see the wire when you put it on
omen in the Middle East are no different from those in the rest of the world when it comes to meddling. At some point in time most women have either cut their hair too short, over processed it or both. To get it back to its original glory can often be a laborious and emotional journey. Worse still it seems that no matter how well we look after, once the damage is done, we may never quite get back what we used to have. So do we just give up? Of course not – one of the bestselling products in the Middle East are hair extensions. So let me remind you about my second question – is it really her hair? You would be shocked at just how many women of all ages and nationality now have a little help by using hair extensions. But the last you want to do if you’ve damaged your hair or suffer from fine or thinning hair, is use something which is going to cause further damage which most extensions are known to do. Effortless Hair Extensions are new to the market and require no glue, clips or tape etc. which can damage your own hair. It’s a weft of hair which offers more thickness than the standard clip-ins and is held together by a fine piece of wire. It slips onto your head like a hairband. Then you simple blend some of your own hair over it. It’s suitable for most hair styles that are shoulder length or longer. They’re not permanent and are designed to be used daily and for special occasions. But as its namesake – they really are effortless and so quick and easy to use. Now, a bad hair is a thing of the past! Effortless hair Extensions take seconds to put on and require no maintenance. Available in 2 lengths, 16 inch and 24 inch and made from the most advanced synthetic hair technology – FEELsoREAL. 21 colours, 3 European styles and 5 Asian/Afro styles are offered and can be styled, washed, blow dried, curled and hot ironed. These extensions cause NO DAMAGE to your own hair!

The Intimate Talk
Bahrain Confidential discusses womens’ need for Obstetrics & Gynecological care, and the concerns of plastic surgery with Dr. Mangala Sundari, Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Cosmetic Gynesurgeon at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital. When do you see women visit their ObGyn?
Most women first visit their ObGyn when it is close to their wedding. Nonetheless, some girls and women visit earlier, due to complaints that require Obstetrics and Gynecology doctor’s attention. The complaints may include irregular menstrual cycle, abdominal pain, suspected infertility, unexpected weight gain and vaginal discharge.
Does this mean that without complaints, women only need to visit their ObGyn during pregnancy?
No, some women experience complaints that are non-pregnancy related, such as vaginal discharge, warts, irregular menstrual cycle, pain during menses and hormone imbalance related symptoms like abnormal hair growth, weight gain or loss, as well as sexual discharge. Therefore, it is important to know what is normal for your body at an early age, as mothers should teach their daughters to keep track of their menstrual cycle, weight loss/gain, and to look out for abnormal symptoms. Non-complaint related reasons for visiting an ObGyn are usually for cosmetic surgery in the vaginal area.
Vaginal cosmetic surgery is a very quietly discussed topic. Surely, many myths are bound to surface. Explain them and the procedure.
People believe that it is just one procedure, a surgery where the area is cut to make it tighter or smaller. This is not true. There are in fact many procedures for different reasons. Amongst the non-invasive procedures we are currently doing, we have whitening, warts removal, and using Botox or Collagen for tightening or reshaping. These procedures are fairly simple and safe. As for surgical procedures, we do reshaping (Labiaplasty), vaginal tightening, and also removal of unwanted abnormalities (such as deeper warts). This is a day
66
Dr. Mangala Sundari
procedure and usually doesn’t require more than one day stay (as walking can be difficult post-procedure). So far, tehre have not been any major complications related to cosmetic surgery. I’m also hopeful that with the fast development in medical technology, soon we’ll be able to do more laser procedures that are safe and effective, and ultimately replacing invasive surgeries for most cases.
What are the benefits then of vaginal cosmetic surgery?
The biggest benefit is a woman’s self-esteem. It is a sensitive issue, but many women have a low self-esteem if they don’t feel beautiful there. I’ve seen how simple procedures boost a woman’s self-confidence and selfesteem, which helps contribute to strengthening their marriage with more intimacy fulfillment and better attitudes. That is what makes this job special; knowing that what is considered a small procedure can make a woman become more confident and happier in her marriage. The Little Teeth
The truth is that looking after children’s oral health is crucial. It betters their chances of having strong and healthy teeth and gums. Not only does it teach them healthy oral habits early, but it also helps prevent serious oral health diseases and problems later. Gifting children with preventive measures to assist their healthy future is extremely important. Few parents know that children should visit the dentist as soon as the first tooth erupts! While, there may not be much for the Pedodontist to do, he or she will certainly give parents a tip or two to help them care for those little teeth. Preventive measures for children are many. Treatments like fissure sealants and fluoride varnish can really help protect those pearly whites. Similarly Orthodontic problems, if detected early can be treated with functional appliances (less costly and easier). We can save our children a lot of effort and pain by taking them to see the dentist early and regularly. ‘Education and prevention is what we believe at Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital’, explains Dr Amina Mustafa who attained a Masters in Dental Public Health from the University of London. In her position as Head of Dental Health at the Ministry of Health in
Bahrain, Dr Amina has run many oral health education programmes in schools. ‘Raising awareness and teaching our nation’s younger generations how to look after their oral health should be a priority, similarly, parents need to be encouraged to actively look after their child’s oral health and visit the dentist regularly.’ To encourage parents to maintain a good health programme for their children, Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital has produced a short educational film, advising parents on how to look after their children’s teeth. The film can be found on, www.gdshospital.com under the tab-‘Resources’. The Hospital is also in the process of finalizing a a 1-year ‘Little Teeth’ Programme. This package in the making aims to give parents an affordable way to meet all their child’s dental needs. It will hopefully encourage parents to do all the necessary checks too.
Follow the hospital’s Facebook page to find out when the ‘Little Teeth Package’ is launched or call the Hospital for further information on +973 1774 1444 or visit our website, www.gdshospital.com

What’s So Good About Açaí? Açaí Berry, some people call it Nature’s Energy Fruit, while others call it the Superfruit. Some people have probably not even heard of this fruit. It may seem odd that we are creating this hype for this fruit, but trust us; it’s definitely worth it! This tiny berry is said to be one of the most powerful and nutrition packed fruits in the world! Grown on a special Amazon palm tree, this high Açaí energy berry is packed with antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Being harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, this berry has a vibrant blend of berries and chocolates. Mostly available at gourmet and organic stores, let’s read in detail how this fruit benefits our health:

• It helps in the well being of our heart. Being high in anthocyanins, they have the ability to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood stream. It prevents blood clots, improves blood circulation and relaxes blood vessels. • This berry might also be the prayer to your weight issues. • It helps in detox. Taking acai regularly keeps the digestive system clean and in optimum condition. This fruit is a natural source of dietary fibre. • It is your morning energy booster. Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa …celebrates its First Anniversary!
As the first five star hotel of Ramee Group completes one year, Wolfgang Brandl, Director of Food & Beverage tells us what sets the restaurants at Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa apart from the rest.
It is your second work stint in Bahrain. How is the island treating you?
Bahrain has a lovely community, people here have open hearts. I’ve lived in Dubai as well and it is a fantastic place for someone like me who likes to be in the hotel industry. That said, when it comes to private life, meeting people, there is a big difference between here and Dubai. Bahrain is the perfect balance between social and private life.
“We host our guests. We try What sets your restaurants apart? to be there for them and I went out the other day to a Sushi restaurant. The was very good and I love Japanese. I even that is what hospitality is food complimented the chef. But then the service was just about giving the bill. There was no hospitality or about.” personal touch. That is something we try to do in our
restaurants. We host our guests. We try to be there for them and that is what hospitality is about.
What do you love about food?
A piece of advice you’ve followed in your career?
Which is your favourite cuisine?
What is special in October?
Well, I’ve been interested in everything to do with food and hotels, right from school days. It gives me a chance to meet new people. I love to eat! My personality is more the hospitality type and that is something you need in this industry.
There have been a few but for F&B in particular, the best I’ve received is ‘if you don’t try you will never know’. I follow that with my team. We are allowed to try new promotions and ideas. Some may not work out but then if you don’t try you will never know.
I love all kinds of food except fast food; I don’t think that is food at all. Food can be simple and nice. For instance, I grew up in Austria – some nice bread with cheese is just great. In fact I love everything from Japanese and Indian to Italian and of course Austrian cuisine.
Any dish you’d recommend to guests?
We have a lot of diversity in our restaurants and that’s one of the main reasons I took up this job. For example people who like Japanese food can visit Ruka and try out the fantastic food. The restaurant also has a stunning view and an amazing interior. There is a lounge too where guests can enjoy good music. In addition we also have our family brunch, it’s very sumptuous. Our Indian restaurant, Rasoi serves delicious Indian food in a fusion sort of way. For those who love a good pizza, Rialto serves some nice options.

We are celebrating our first anniversary! In celebration of the 1st anniversary, we’ve prepared a special offer to show our appreciation to all our patrons. Interaction Increase With TAWASUL
TAWASUL experiences a higher public awareness towards the benefits of using technology. The National Suggestions and Complaints System (TAWASUL) is amongst the successful models of cooperation between national entities, aiming to create a better environment for interaction between government and public in a transparent manner. Inaugurated by the Ministry of Health in July 2013, TAWASUL has gained global interest, making Bahrain a role model in areas of government support for creative national initiatives along with the commitment of eGovernment Authority to provide the best services through various channels thus expanding participation and public interaction in a way that improves governance of government services. CHOMP IT THE SRILANKAN WAY By Jenny Thomas
In conversation with one of the partners of the now most talked about Srilankan restaurants in town, Rampé Restaurant. Nirmalan Thangiah tells us all!
Having a Dream. My business partner, Raj and I, were friends since we were little children. You could call us the athletic-loving and always hungry boys back in the day. It was not common to go out and eat, so when we did, it was like a huge treat! Being teenagers, we started talking about how one day we could start our own restaurant and be one of the biggest restaurants in town. Well time flew by and we both branched out into two very different fields. Being in Bahrain and being a Srilankan, I love my spicy food. You do not come across any proper fine dining Srilankan restaurants on the island. There are takeaway joints but nothing so consistent. This got us thinking last year; why not introduce a Srilankan fine-dining restaurant here. You know what they say, “Necessity is the mother of all inventions”. Dream Turns Into Reality. So, we started looking around for a suitable location. The location of Rampé, how do I put it, is ‘tailor-made’ for us. It gives us the space to display our culture, artifacts, gives us the opportunity have an open kitchen. We brought an architect from Srilanka, who designed the entire space for us. Everything you see in the restaurant is custom made, brought from Srilanka, from our designs, interiors, art, to the people involved (chef, waiters, etc) Bahrain’s culinary scenes have always been what attracted people to Bahrain. In this island, there are two things you know for sure people do on the weekend- shop and eat out. As a foodie, my basic rules of dining are: Hygiene- the area I dine in must be hygienic. Etiquette of the server- the servers and people involved must treat every guest specially. That’s what makes dining more fun, likeable and wanted. Rampé Cuisine and Dishes. Our cuisine is Authentic Srilankan food. Our food might seem slightly similar to the Indians, but on the contrary, we are quite complex. Our signature dishes are Kothu Roti, Lamprais. Rampé- Authentic, Truly Srilakan, Vibrant, Ethnic, better put, ‘It is the Home of Srilankan Food’ For more information and bookings, call +973 1772 3700 Nirmalan Thangiah

A tea house at the Manama souk
“L
et me introduce you to my salon de thé,” I say to my visitors as I take them around the ethnic Manama souk. They look sceptical at first, a salon de thé - in the true European sense - here in the heart of Arabia? I don’t think so. Indeed, nothing can be further from the truth. The place I have in mind is not a dainty and quaint tea house where you get served fresh croissants and a selection of teas in fine porcelain cups. Nor is it a place where waitresses hurry about in elegant French uniforms and little white aprons and where the ‘Madame de la maison’ herself comes to your table to enquire if everything is to your satisfaction. No, the tea house I am talking about is slightly more rustic. It’s where the Bahraini ‘regulars’ meet on a daily basis to discuss and ponder about the issues in this world as they sip their tea and watch passers-by. The setting is basic: wooden benches and tables set in an open corridor between two buildings with a roof comprising of blue plastic sheets to provide ample cover from sun, dust, leaky ACs etc… And the menu: an all-day brew of black tea - with lots of sugar - and if you are hungry you can snack on a bowl of chick peas, thoroughly cooked, which you can enjoy with a

For a few hundred fils you can spend an enjoyable half hour while giving your legs a rest before continuing on your journey to discover the hidden treasures of the souk. There are a number of such native haunts hidden in the souk. Do you know the vegetarian restaurant that serves delicious curries and dal with chapatti – all for BD1 – and where you can get as many refills as your appetite can take? And what about the restaurant – also located along the building's corridor - which serves wonderful biryani and freshly baked bread – the smell of which will tantalise your taste buds and make you ask for more. It’s when you wander around the souk and discovers its local eateries, its small shops, take in the sounds and smells that you can better understand the culture and history of this city and thus connect to its people. It is your chance to understand
how the residents live and see first-hand a slice of life from their perspective. I believe that’s what makes living in a foreign country so much more interesting. The shopping malls, the hotels, the restaurants are pretty much the same everywhere in the world. It’s great to have them; they are available for our comfort and give us a feeling of security, of familiarity but it is when you go off the beaten track and discover small little areas that give you a glimpse into the culture of the country, into the life of the locals that you can truly start to call the place you live in ‘home’. Rudyard Kipling summed it up: “The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.” Maria Sorger is a marketing professional and MBA graduate. The Undiscovered Paradise By Rebecca Smith
When I mentioned to people that I was going to Indonesia, everyone instantly assumed it was Bali or Jakarta. I had never been to either before and they were both definitely on my bucket list. But it seems Bali can wait! I was on my way to discover another province in Indonesia, which has been pretty much undiscovered by the rest of the world. Or so I was told.
I
had been invited along with five other journalists and travel agents by the Indonesian Embassy. We had a stopover in Abu Dhabi and then a nine-hour flight to Jakarta. On landing it was a pleasure to step outside and find that the weather was far more welcoming than the searing heat of Bahrain. Although according to our tour operator – it was still considered hot by most Europeans standards. This had everyone in fits of laughter as the temperature was only in the 20 degrees Celsius range. I will stick my hand up and admit despite what I keep hearing about Jakarta, it’s cosmopolitan and boasts some of the best shopping and nightlife in Asia. But for me, it’s not a place that I would rush back to. ‘Chaotic, crowded, terrible traffic and too much pollution’ are words that immediately come to mind when I think of it. Granted, it was the weekend but it did seem that way the whole time we were there. I was stuck in traffic, which was unfortunate but whenever we finally arrived to our destination – it was worth it.
78
We stayed at the Swiss Belhotel – which was a standard four-star business hotel, but offered a great spa and I was super excited when I learnt that a ninety-minute reflexology session cost a couple of dinars. I had to keep asking to make sure I had heard it correctly. It was excellent and overall, the service and staff were good. After checking in, we trotted back to the mini bus – to sit in traffic. But on arrival to our destination, I was very pleasantly surprised. Set in a 200-yearold building on the northwestern corner of Fatahillah Square, Batavia Cafe is the second oldest building in Central Jakarta after the Fatahillah Museum and was to be where we had our evening meal. The Café bar is stunning and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. It feels like you’ve stepped back in time and the ambience was very relaxing. It felt very tropical with the over-head fans spinning, big sofas and lots of old pictures and plants. It’s also a great place to sit and people-watch.
Afterwards, we split and strolled around some of the lanes in Kota, the capital’s old quarter. Although many of the buildings are somewhat dilapidated due to years of neglect, a walk across Fatahillah Square offers an idea of what life was like during the 300 years of Dutch occupation. It was chaotic and I have to admit despite being a big traveller, I have never seen more, to the point we dodged so many motor bikes. But it was good to stretch our legs after a long flight and browse the local stalls. The following morning, we headed off to visit the Miniature Park and the Nusantara Expo & Forum 2014. This is a cultural recreation park in east Jakarta. Its pavilions displayed clothing, architecture, traditions and dances, as seen in the 26 provinces of Indonesia. It also has a tropical bird park, cable cars, lake and museums to keep you busy and plenty of food stands. It’s a fabulous opportunity to view the stunning architecture which is set in lush greenery and very

little traffic. It was lively and entertaining and despite the name. The buildings are not scaled down but true to life. A tour of the Miniature Park is a great way to get a glimpse into Indonesia’s history and culture and something the kids would enjoy. Another major tourist attraction is the Museum Indonesia. Explore this three-storey Balinese palace and you will see an impressive collection of antique jewellery, puppets, boats, traditional houses, textiles and wedding costumes. In the evening, I headed off for a welldeserved foot massage. Overall, Jakarta is a huge megalopolis spread out over 290 square miles. While it's modernised quite quickly in the past few years, some places are still rooted in tradition. Dutch colonial rule and today's bustling democratic tide have all contributed to make it a crazy, buzzing and growing economy. The following morning we caught an early flight to Tanjung Pandan, Belitung. In my opinion this is when the trip really became something fun, interesting and breathtakingly beautiful. If you’re familiar with Goa, then Belitung is what it was like twenty years back. Lush tropical fields, simple houses and hardly a car in sight and completely undiscovered by westerns, as I quickly found out because everywhere I went the locals would ask to take photographs of me; sadly, not because they thought I was Cameron Diaz or Kylie Minogue but because of my blonde hair. After enjoying a tasty Chinese lunch and checking into our hotel, the Ashton, we headed off to Tanjung Tinggi, a beach placed Watch out for the amazing sun sets!

among two peninsulas. This is your picture postcard white sandy beach made even more special because of the hundreds of granite boulders in the water and on the shore. Some of the granite stones are bigger than a house. We were like little kids scrambling over them giggling and forever screaming ‘take a picture’. We finally calmed down to sit back and enjoy a stunning sunset. In the evening, we dined at a lovely hill top open restaurant. Now it felt like we were on a holiday! The people of Belitung are really very charming. Crime is minimal and for a woman, it is very safe to wander around without fear of being attacked. It’s small, so everyone knows each other. In terms of shops – there really isn’t any other than the local department store and souvenir shop which both are pretty basic. This is a place to completely switch off, relax and swim.

Belitung History
With excellence of comparability and supported by regional ecosystem of archipelago, coastal area and the island with the other, Bangka Belitung present marine tourism (diving, scuba, snorkeling, fishing and sailing). After tin was found here in 1710, Bangka (derived from the local word wangka meaning tin) got his wealth and fame from this metal. These days, tin is still mined but not as much as before.
It may not be a cruise ship but it was ours!
We went island hopping, which was so much fun. To try and say why each island stands out from the other is difficult. They all offer stunning white sands and beautiful lush scenery and crystal, clear, blue waters. • Tanjung Kelayang Island is famous for the large stones that stand up in various shapes around the shoreline. • Kepala Garuda Island and Batu Berlayar Island have picture postcard white sands and crystal clear waters. • Lengkuas Island has an ancient 70-meter tall lighthouse, which was built in 1882 during the Dutch colonial era. I climbed to the top. The view was glorious and allowed me to find some secret little coves to swim in. We swam and snorkelled throughout the day. Lunch was at a beachside bar on Kepayang Island and our skipper cooked freshly caught seafood. It was lush. We then headed of through the jungle to a small turtle reserve. It was truly a fantastic day. In the evening we headed off to the Bukit Berahu Restaurant which is a quirky family run place and one that is regularly visited by Asian celebrities. Everyone I spoke to said the same ‘Have you been to Bali? Belitung is more beautiful.’
80
People
The Chinese make up at least 20% of the population and are direct descendants of the coolies who worked the tin mines.
Cuisine
Due to its proximity to sea, seafood has become a favourite. Chinese influence also can be seen in the dishes that mainly use Chinese spices. While you're here try gebung, the local dialect for chicken fish. Its firm and tasty flesh will delight your senses. We stayed at The Ashton, a great new hotel in Tj Pandan, West Belitung. Clean basic rooms with sea views. The breakfast selection was very good and better than Jakarta in my opinion. Although limited there are some spa facilities and you can book a massage in your room, which is great as you can just roll over and fall as sleep.
A Tip:
Unless you are very good with numbers, a calculator is a must! The currency is in the treble 0’s. But hey, it was fun being an instant millionaire. It was just a shame it wasn’t in sterling.

The All-new Nissan X-Trail
The All-new Nissan X-Trail
Muscular, modern and packed with technology, the new Nissan X-Trail re defines the compact SUV segment. Building upon Nissan’s respected 4x4 heritage, the 2015 X-Trail is projected to sell over 500,000 units per year. Fully connected, the SUV is equipped with the latest generation NissanConnect in-car navigation, information and entertainment systems. Drivers will also benefit from a comprehensive suite of assistance features that make up the X-Trail’s Nissan Safety Shield system. In its latest form, NissanConnect has evolved to offer Smartphone connectivity and access to a projected range of apps covering music, social networking and a 7-inch colour touch screen including Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots. There is also a 5-inch TFT colour display incorporating several graphic displays accessible on rotation, offering advice and warnings: average and actual speeds, navigation turn-by-turn instructions, audio content, eco driving advice and torque distribution settings in 4WD mode. The X-Trail’s design blends the sleek and stylish lines of a modern crossover with the robust appeal
of a typical SUV, In place of the rugged, squared off lines of the previous generation. The spacious interior is classy as well, fitted with premium fittings and elements. Chassis: The new X-Trail adopts Nissan’s advanced electronic four-wheel drive system, ALL MODE 4x4i. Controlled via a rotary switch on the center console, it offers a choice between two-wheel drive, Auto mode or Lock offering permanent fourwheel drive. In the ‘default’ Auto mode, the system constantly monitors throttle opening, engine speed and torque to anticipate wheel spin and to distribute torque between front and rear axles as needed, at speeds of up to 80 km/h. Above that speed, the system reacts to wheel spin, again shifting drive rearwards to restore traction as required. For tricky conditions and at low speeds, ‘Lock’ gives new X-Trail permanent four-wheel drive, while drivers also have the option of a two-wheel drive only version. The two world firsts are Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake. Active Ride Control monitors the road surface to detect undulations. Active
Engine Brake, meanwhile, harnesses the power and controllability of the Xtronic transmission to add a degree of engine braking while cornering or when decelerating to a standstill. The benefits are greater braking control and enhanced feel with less pedal effort. The third system, pioneered in the premium segment, is Active Trace Control. By using onboard sensors to monitor speed, steering angle, throttle opening and braking effort; Active Trace Control brakes wheels individually, as required, to reduce understeer and help the driver steer a safer path through bends: it is particularly effective on slippery, wet roads. Finally new X-Trail benefits from Uphill Start Support and Advance Hill Descent Control. The two and four-wheel drive options are priced from BD7,995 onwards For a test drive visit the Nissan showroom in Sitra or call, Tel. +973 1773 2732

The Porsche Cayman GTS
The New Porsche Cayman GTS Has Arrived!
But first, let me take a selfie! Rebecca is all smiles
P
ut me in a shoe shop and you will see a very happy girl. Test drive a car ummmahhh – to be honest it doesn’t seem to always have the same appeal. That was until I was introduced to the Porsche Cayman GTS. When I drove to the Porsche Centre to collect it, I had so much work on that I figured I would get a feel for the car by driving it back to the office and had planned to return it within the hour. I was also a little uncomfortable about driving something which obviously wasn’t going to come cheap. That was up until the point I turned the ignition and heard that little red (of course) babe roar. I was absolutely transfixed. I knew within seconds that I wasn’t going back to the office nor was I returning it within the hour. WOW the handling on this sexy little thing is just amazing. It feels as if it sticks to the road like glue. Despite how fast this gem of a car can go, I felt so secure and unlike many other sports cars, it felt sturdy
108
and strong. This car can handle itself. It was so utterly fun to drive that I couldn’t ever imagine wanting to drive something else. I was hooked! The Porsche Cayman GTS is a new range-topping model. It offers more power and has a few styling updates, particularly a new sports chassis that’s 20mm lower than the standard set-up. The short-throw gearbox is so accurate that it just seems to fall into gear as soon as you push the clutch. But for me it was the steering. It’s so nicely weighted and responsive that I instantly felt in control. The new models also feature the exceptional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system as standard. The flat six-cylinder boxers are based on the 3.4-litre engines of the Cayman S. Thanks to fine-tuning they deliver 15hp more power which means the Cayman GTS delivers 340hp. The GTS is equipped with Sport Chrono package as standard. The results: in conjunction with the optional Porsche
Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and active Sport Plus button, it is one-tenth of a second faster. Now I’m starting to understand why people are speed enthusiasts! The interior of the Cayman GTS matches the sporty exterior design in terms of further high-end finishing and dynamic looks. The car comes with standard sports seats and a leather interior enhanced with Alcantara elements. Trim strips are available on request, for the first time in black anodised aluminium. A Sport Design steering wheel is fitted as standard and unlike most steering wheels – it feels like soft leather which doesn’t burn the hands when you first touch it after leaving it in the sun. If I could have a new sports car today, it would defiantly be the all-new Porsche Cayman GTS and that is one thing I never thought I would be asking for. Available at the at Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers, in Sitra. Priced at BD26,800

What’s New & Exciting at BFLC? General Manager, Peter Lyons discusses the highlights at Bahrain Family Leisure Company (BFLC), for 2014.
Go Italian at Cucina Italiana!
How have guests responded to the new menu additions at Bennigans?
The menu is still very new but so far we have received great feedback from guests new and old. Of particular focus are the new Ultimate Buffalo Chicken Salad and our tower of onion rings which are sights to behold. Our new beverage menu is what is really getting people’s attention – signature drinks you won’t find anywhere else on the Island.

interview Bahrain Confidential October 2014
Your plans for Cucina Italiana?
Also with a new menu, Cucina Italiana has many new dishes including fresh homemade pastas and features the winning dish from last year’s Master Chef competition which was immensely popular in 2013. We now have an amazing beverage menu which has some of the best drinks in Bahrain – all tailored for Cucina Italiana and our guests just love it. Our cooking classes are back in full swing with weekly sessions – this year we have reduced the participants for each session in order to get them cooking. Rather than a demonstration, each student now cooks the dishes and then everyone sits down to eat their own creations. The classes are very popular and great for a social event or corporate gathering. That and the great price of BD12 means we book out very fast!
Quirky interior at Bayti
Peter Lyons
What are the October dining specials?
The Ultimate Buffalo Chicken Salad at Bennigans, one of the many new items on the menu
Any surprises from Bayti?
Bayti will surprise any guest who ventures to the restaurant – we created a non-traditional element and broke the mold with Bayti – the venue is fresh, funky and modern with some retro style twists and the same can be said of the food. Our vision was to take Arabic cuisine to the next level and evolve many dishes from traditional recipes. Our success stories in terms of food, so far have to be the Gourmet Shawarma, the regional specialties which feature some great modern Bahraini dishes and of course our Chocolate Shawarma which everyone just loves.
What have the highlights been at BFLC, this year?
Our restaurants, Bennigans and Cucina Italiana won awards this year and we hope to continue that trend for next year. Cucina Italiana’s Master Chef competition caught us by surprise when it became an instant hit and grew from a small idea to a televised event. I personally loved hosting the competition and seemed to develop something of a reputation as the Simon Cowell of the judge panel. I will no doubt be back to my sarcastic best when the Master Chef Competition returns for Season 2, this November.
Well, Cucina Italiana features an exciting Salt Crusted Sea Bass which has to be tasted to believe. Bennigans has some exciting things to serve for our half way to St Paddy’s day event on 17th October and Bayti’s entire menu is special which locals, expats and tourists alike should go and try- you won’t be disappointed!
How is the festive season preppingup coming along?
What? The year is nearly over? Where did it go? (chuckles!) – Well Cucina Italiana and Bennigans will feature festive menus as well as offers on beverages during the period. Currently we are in the final stages of developing the Master Chef competition so that it is bigger and better than last year – we have some great sponsors requesting participation and interested candidates already trying to register so it’s all hands-on deck to ensure we pull off another great season. Appetizers anyone?
Say cheese! The lavish spread of creamy, nutty goodness
BBQ Feast
Sugar rush!
ould you believe me if I tell you that I’ve never brunched before this? I am an early riser – you know, relatively early – and so I never enjoy the privilege of combining the lavishness of a breakfast with the flavours of a lunch. Recently, InterContinental Regency invited me over for their Friday Brunch at Elements Pool & Lounge. The weather is much more pleasant now than during the peak summers and so what better time than this to enjoy a pool side brunch! I meet up with Vivian Yoon and Karen Colaco of InterContinental Regency Bahrain, at the restaurant for some serious girl time fun! A spacious interior divided
112
into a dining area, lounge and buffet counter area, Elements Pool & Lounge offers the perfect ambience to unwind as you sip on your drink. We select the grape pairing to go with our cheeses. I love cheese and this brunch spoils you silly with its soft/firm, nutty, flavourful varieties; there are a variety of breads to go with the cheese. I choose from some interesting appetizers including a range of salami cuts, salmon, exotic salads and the regular crunchy greens with tangy dressings. There is a live BBQ counter serving chorizos, sausages, kofta, quail, fish, prawn, chicken and lamb chops. I select my options and the chef hands me a chit with a number on it; in 10 to 15 minutes I’m digging into the BBQ.
We decide to skip the main course – a delicious spread of soup, rice, meat, veggies and breads – and proceed to desserts. I don’t really have a sweet tooth but I particularly love the macarons and panna cotta. The chef pleasantly surprises us with homemade vanilla ice cream, dipped in a thick dark chocolate crust, all in a crunchy cone – the perfect ending to a perfect brunch! The Friday brunch is priced at BD25 net inclusive of unlimited beverages and pool access. Enjoy your lazy weekend with this one, may be even take a dip in the pool afterwards? Now, that’s ideal! The Express Lunch at Elite Resort & Spa The Express Lunch offers a variety of dishes
A
s a journalist, on most days I hardly get the time for an elaborate lunch. Sometimes I have to grab a grub on my way to an interview or photoshoot. So, I’m always hunting for quick, interesting lunch options, not to forget pocket friendly too; recently, I discovered this one! La Brasserie café at Elite Resort & Spa serves their Express Lunch buffet on weekdays from 12.30 to 3pm. Ideally located on Sh Hamad Causeway, the hotel is convenient to visit during your lunch break. If you’re hard pressed for time you can just dive into the spread which is not the case with à la carte. That said, those who want to enjoy an elaborate, laid back
114
afternoon can do so too. Basically, the guest sets the pace for the lunch which is great. I reached the hotel at around 1.30pm and was welcomed by a staff member who guided me to my seat (the service at Elite’s restaurants is always impeccable!). I was then briefed about the buffet I was going to review. The Express Lunch has a variety of salads and mezze to start off with. There is a soup too which I tried before I went for the main course. For your drinks you can choose from the many fresh fruit juice options and soft drinks. A live pasta counter is also part of the buffet - I created my own dish using my choice of ingredients and sauces. After that sumptuous lunch over a
stimulating conversation with the hotel’s General Manager and Social Media Executive, I moved on to dessert. If you’ve got a sweet tooth you’re in for a treat with the fruit salad, custards, pies, a newly created apple-cinnamon cake topped with caramel sauce... and more. The Express Lunch is basically this lavish multi cuisine buffet with a large choice of salads, a healthy variety of fresh cooked main course and a delicious ending to the meal with a wide choice of desserts. All this for only BD6.5 net per person…bon appétit, I say! For bookings call, Tel. +973 1755 8200

SCORPIO ARIES
21 March 19 April
You want to start considering how you can remove distractions from your work life. Family life can be very distracting. You might feel a little restless since you aren’t used to the calm. Try deep breathing!
TAURUS 20 April 20 May
You have so much to do, but you’re not sure that you want to be doing it. In your love life, you will find that you’re in a period of change. You might begin to realise that you need to change an important relationship if you want it to last.
GEMINI
21 May - 21 June
Horoscopes Kate Winslet
Known to be one of the best English speaking actors in Hollywood, Kate Winslet was bullied as a child for being overweight and having big feet! Hard to imagine that about the gorgeous diva we saw descending the stairs of the Titanic in the movie by the same name! Kate celebrates her birthday this month. LIBRA
22 September 22 October
For some reason, your skin might have some troubles that are related to your stress levels. Take some time to focus on relaxation and letting go of stress. Yoga is a good choice for you to help your body release stress.

VIRGO
22 August 21 September
Focus on listening to what others say, instead of manipulating others to do what you want them to do. The good news is that you’ve learned something from all of the struggles you’ve faced, and now you have a plan to make things easier in the future.
Try to think about what’s actually bothering you. The money woes that you’ve been facing will not necessarily be completely resolved right now. Try not to be hard on yourself and use past mistakes as lessons for future financial decisions.
23 October 22 November
You will find out that you have some issues to work out, but once they’re brought to light, they’re not as difficult as they seem at first. The work that is successful for you is also going to yield financial success.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November 21 December
You should focus on whether what you have to say is as important as you believe it to be. It’s a good idea to listen. Suddenly, you find that the work you have done on your career is leading to more money with less effort.
CAPRICORN
22 December 19 January
You might even hear others talk behind your back, and the things they say make you smile. Just when you thought you would have to change the way you spend, the money comes in to allow you to do more of the things you want to do.
AQUARIUS CANCER
22 June - 22 July
Keep hopeful this month that your money situation is improving. The lower energy you feel might tempt you to have more caffeine than you normally would, try instead to fuel your body with healthy foods. Get enough rest and me time.
LEO
23 July 21 August
While you’ve been feeling a little stuck at work life, something new comes into your office this month, helping you reenergize. You will find that you are able to communicate more effectively and that smaller problems are finally getting resolved.
20 January 18 February
No matter what you’ve done or experienced up to this point, this is a great moment to start accepting newness in your life. In the past, you’ve been willing to wait until the ‘right time,’ instead; you need to focus on doing something that different – taking a chance.
PISCES
19 February 20 March
Your work life is leading to a more stable financial life. Don’t be tempted to spend. Your health is going to be strong, but you need to make sure you’re protecting your immune system. Get some sleep when you can.

If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
