Can you believe that we’re nearly at the end of the year – OMG where has it gone? Well, we’re quite confident when we say anyone who is familiar to Bahrain will all agree in unison – that this has been an unusual year and one that most of us didn’t expect but it’s not over yet and in our opinion if we all work together – it can only get better. This is why we’re running an ongoing feature to remind our readers and those new to Bahrain just how unique this island is. It may be considered small but there’s plenty on offer and we’re here to remind you of that. So let’s stop going on about what we haven’t got and focus on what we have because we know for most people they would certainly miss and regret taking this country for granted if they had to leave. Apart from the above, this issue once again is jam packed with lots of interesting and entertaining interviews. Dr Ravi Pillai is almost like his last name as he has become a pillar in society and although he is a serial entrepreneur he is also an incredible philanthropist. Society could certainly benefit with more people like him. Our resident Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist discusses the importance of setting boundaries - which is something we can all gain from. Our makeover star Louise Edwards looks as if it’s the last thing she needs - thanks to our team of merry helpers and her great attitude. Finally have you ever thought about going to Bosnia for a holiday? No, thought not, because neither had we. Now it’s on our list of must-go places so hope to bump into you there too. As usual, this issue is packed with enough to keep everyone entertained and informed. So there really is no reason to stay at home … unless it’s to read us of course. Eid Mubarak!

Many thanks to all of you who wrote in last month and apologies if your letter isn’t printed but we get so many. Remember our reply is meant to be humorous so if we offend you - grow up cry baby. Send your comments to info@ArabianMagazines.com Oooooh Bahrain Confidential, your Sheer Lux section left me drooling last month. I don’t think I have ever seen such sparkle and glitz on one page before! If I was only able to afford one beautiful ring from that page I would be a very happy girl! Now, how do I go about getting my hands on some? Maybe they can lend some beautiful diamonds to me for an event, you know, like they do for celebrities on the red carpet? Ok fine, I will start saving now .... Haha we are so glad you liked it. Hmm, unless you are an A-Lister such as Victoria Beckham, we very much doubt they would be willing to lend their gems to any Joe Bloggs. I guess there is no harm in trying!! Look out for even more bling this month.

8 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

I have never been a huge fan of Damien Hirst and often find his art distasteful (who buys a dead animal preserved in formaldehyde for millions of dinars?!). Anyway, I turned to the Myths, Monsters and Legends page and loved it! Yes it was quite mo rbid with so many skulls but so beautiful at the same time with his bold use of colour. The picture of Hirst with three heads also made me laugh .... he is so wild and unique with his art but that’s why he has so many fans, including me now! We were very pleased to be approached a) with the exclusive but b) before Europe even published them. Although it was a little bit of a nightmare as we were supposed to run with the interview too but Rankin the photographer couldn’t be located as he was on location. So hopefully you’ll enjoy the interview and new images this month too? Your interview last month with the breast cancer survivor was so inspiring. It is a reminder that you can’t keep thinking ‘It won’t happen to me’. It is so important to get regular checks. My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer and won the fight but I know so many other women that haven’t. As Heidi said, the support group you have around you is vital and her story really moved me. Yes this is one topic that we don’t even want to try and make light of. This disease doesn’t

discriminate between race, religion, rich or poor. We all have to be very aware of it and do our own bit by trying to live a healthier lifestyle. But it’s mainly thanks to people like Heidi who are prepared to speak out and dedicated campaigners such as Jules and her Think Pink team who have turned this issue into such a major cause in Bahrain. Girl power alert!! Your Harley-Davidson biker women interview was brilliant! I wish I had a cool hobby like that. The most exciting thing I do in my spare time is go to the cinema or read a book! The article has inspired me to do something far more thrilling in my spare time. I think people would have huge respect for me if I told them I was the owner of a Harley, what do you think?? Why don’t you tell our Harley babes? Because they’ll tell you that you’re lying and your pants on fire. Nah we recommend that you get a hobby such as rat trapping – pop into many of the clubs over here and you’re likely to bump into quite a few. Wow Pole Dancing in Bahrain – are you for real? This is going to open up a whole new and interesting way to get fit. I would love to have a go but I’m too embarrassed because of what I may be asked to do … Calm down, calm down woman! You certainly have an interesting imagination. What were you thinking? Say no more as it’s only a fun way to get fit and nothing more. It’s hugely popular in Europe and trust us – it’s not easy but well worth the effort. A few lessons in this and you’ll have abs to die for. You’ve improved your gadget section and I like it very much. Before it was just like you did a cut and paste job and had no interest in the topic but now I find it really informative. Thanks. Us – no interest in gadgets? How dare you! We can switch on computers and use a phone – what else do you need to know? Actually you want to thank our blogger Faisal who’s the one who does all the hard work while we just cut and paste – WHOOPS!

This is a tragic loss at such a young age. My heart goes out to Dan Wheldon’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time. Dan was a racer I’d followed throughout my career and he was an extremely talented driver.”

Lindsay Lohan could be facing a year-and-a half in jail after violating her probation. Lohan faces many questions from Judge Stephanie Sautner about allegedly skipping her court-ordered therapy sessions. The actress has been accused of failing to show up nine times to the Downtown Woman’s Centre in Los Angeles for her community service, and questions are being asked about why she didn’t spend the ordered four hours at a time there. Lohan has previously served 35 days under house arrest for stealing a USD2,500 necklace from a boutique in January. The 24-year-old actress claims to have carried out her therapy sessions over the phone.

Chris Martin: “Marrying Gwyneth was Like Winning the Lottery”

Despite being a notoriously private couple, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has opened up about his relationship with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow in a recent interview. Chris gave out intimate details during a chat with American news channel. When asked if it was true that he had only been in one serious relationship he replied, “That’s right. I’m in it.” The interviewer then joked that Chris had made quite a leap after meeting the American actress to which he replied “It’s a big leap? What, from being a loser, to going out with an Oscar winner? It’s a giant leap. Let’s face it, it’s like winning the lottery.”

Justin Bieber’s 18-year-old girlfriend Selena Gomez has received a death threat so serious, the LAPD’s Threat Management Unit are involved and Selena has obtained a restraining order. 46year-old Thomas Brodnicki has a criminal history of stalking and allegedly told his shrink that he was going to kill Selena. Brodnicki said he traveled from Chicago to LA to meet her, visited her workplace at least three times and has told people he had conversations with God about killing her. Selena says she is in “extreme fear,” believing he will carry out his death threat against her if he isn’t stopped. Selena Gomez

People Celebrating one of its latest store openings in Bahrain, we sit down with the CEO of De Beers Diamond Jewellers to talk about the brand and their unique mark in the world of diamonds.

“... We are selling precious products and obviously I want to ensure that the execution is as precious as the product we are selling.”

Francois Delage:

‘A Diamond Is Forever’ You’ve been CEO of the brand for over two years, how do you feel about the challenges of putting your unique experience in place to take De Beers Diamond Jewellers into its next phase of development? I feel very good about the challenges for two reasons: One, because I think the crisis has somehow helped the diamond jewellery business. I think people realised that with the (financial) crisis, they needed to be a bit more selective and a bit more discerning and so for that, diamonds are doing better than other products. But within that, I think that De Beers is a wonderful and magical name, and certainly at the heart of the aspiration of clients. So it’s actually a wonderful role - to be presiding the destiny of such a wonderful brand. Secondly, we are quite active in developing our brand - those of our existing clientele but also new markets, hence our decision to enter Bahrain. We had the pleasure to be able to welcome a lot of Bahraini clients in our existing network and we

24 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

thought it was time to come here. Our brand is about aspirations and emotions; so it’s all a question of how you stimulate the mindset of a client. I’m talking about inspiring dreams, and from that point of view we have been successful over the last few years, by bringing inspiring designs which combine the beauty of our diamonds and De Beers’ impeccable craftsmanship. I constantly say to the team that we are selling precious products and obviously I want to ensure that the execution is as precious as the product we are selling. How do you choose your local partners in this case, AJM Kooheji Group? We have a very strong and thorough assessment. What is important for us when we select a partner is to make sure that beyond the experience and the skills, there is the right attitude and mindset. It’s all about sharing vision and values. That’s why we decided to do business with the Kooheji family and the AJM Kooheji Group of Companies. It’s a partnership that is very

loyal and hopefully will last forever. Many enjoy the pleasure of customdesigning a one-of-a-kind piece, how does this work at De Beers? What we do in Bahrain like we do in other stores, is we sell loose diamonds. The reason is because I think it’s important to put the diamond back into the ‘decision of choice.’ We offer bespoke services wherein we’ll let you choose a diamond, ask you how you want to set it, then we’ll talk with you to understand how you’d want to wear your jewellery: for what sort of occasion it’s for, what your lifestyle is, what your preferred jewellery design is, etc., then we provide you with a few sketches and make a prototype, so you can see how your ring would look like in 3-D. If it matches your expectations and dreams, we then set it for you, using that particular design De Beers Diamond Jewellers is now open at Moda Mall.

The

Man Behind The Lens

26 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

Art Space John Rankin Waddell is synonymous with dynamic and intimate portraiture. The photographer Rankin has shot everyone from royalty to refugees. His powerful images are part of contemporary iconography, and mix a cross section of his own personal interests with commercial campaigns, from Nike to Women’s Aid. His work is regularly exhibited in galleries around the world from Sao Paolo to Moscow, London to LA. Bahrain Confidential was approached last month to feature Rankin’s recent collaboration with Damian Hirst. Not one to let an opportunity pass us by we wanted to know more about the man behind the lens.

How did get you started? I first started taking pictures when I was 21. I was actually studying to be an accountant, but I was living with all these really creative people. I realised that they were having more fun, and going to the best parties. Quite honestly, I thought that it was a great way to meet girls! But the minute I began to take photographs, I knew that it was something that I could do - and something that I enjoyed. What was your big break? I wouldn’t say essentially that I had a big break. I started the magazine Dazed & Confused with my business partner Jefferson Hack whilst we were both still at college. We were in the right place at the right time in terms of the advent of desktop publishing. It made making magazines more affordable and accessible. Plus Britain was going through a recession and there was very little work going around. So we decided to do it ourselves. We were very influenced by Andy Warhol’s ‘Interview’ and Malcolm McLaren’s DIY approach to creating art. This platform allowed me to show my work and get it out there. I really do feel like a

‘big break’ is a bit of a cop-out term. It’s like saying it was my destiny, which it never was. I worked hard, consistently and knocked on doors until they all seemed to open at once. It was a lot of hard graft before people started taking me seriously and giving me jobs. How is it like photographing celebrities? Any tricky customers? Sure, I like photographing celebrities. But I like photographing non-celebrities too - all types of people present their own challenges, and their own positives and negatives. I have had so many fun and crazy experiences from photographing celebrities - I get to jump between very bizarre worlds all the time, from Buckingham Palace one day to hanging out with rock stars another. I get an insight into people’s lives that other people don’t. There have been some tricky customers, but I won’t name names! Mostly, they are just very normal people, and refreshingly down-toearth. Don’t underestimate the media hype that is spun around them ... I’m mainly very presently surprised. I’ve learnt over the years, never to enter a shoot with prejudice. I wait and see what someone is really like before judging them.

Art Space Working with Damien was great as we both believe in artistic collaboration. I love Damien’s work, and I always have. It works on two levels - on a cerebral level, but also on a gut level. It’s emotive; it provokes that gut reaction. I have always aimed for the same in my work. The appeal is more in his approach, than in a particular aesthetic although obviously I admire his work on that level too.

the subject wants to give you something of themselves. It’s always a collaboration. The subject needs to feel that they have some input into their own image, they need to trust the photographer. How do you go about directing a difficult subject? When I have a particularly difficult or anxious subject, I try and take the attention off them. I make jokes, I make fun of myself, I mess around. When it’s not all about them, it diffuses any ego or anxiety. Before they know it, they have forgotten themselves and are having fun. You have to realise that most people, even celebrities, feel uncomfortable in front of a portrait camera, it can be very revealing. I never forget this.

Who would you most like to work with? I haven’t really shot many American movie stars. I’d love to shoot Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp. I think to watch them act is fascinating and to photograph them would be as well. I don’t mean that in a fawning way. I don’t go for the photographs that make celebrities look glamorous or cool or intelligent - I’m looking for the images that have a sense of humor and show that they’ve got real lives. It would be interesting to break down the hype around these kinds of people and show them in a totally different way. I’d love to shoot Nelson Mandela too. What do you think is the most important aspect in getting a great photo? For me good lighting is key. But also, it’s absolutely essential to make a connection with my subject - building up a rapport, getting that synergy. All photography involves a power balance between photographer and subject. It’s a two-way street, and an image won’t reveal anything of interest unless

Is there any particular project you’ve done which has left a lasting mark on you more than the others? Why and in what way has it affected you? There are some photographs which hold something particularly special for me such as Elle Macpherson’s Intimate shots, because that is when I first met Tuuli, my wife - but I could never choose just one. They all hold a special emotional place once they have been shot - because each shoot experience is individual and exciting in its own way, and yields new work. Even a bad shoot experience, where the shots were a struggle to get, is still a lesson learned ... and I never stop shooting until I am happy with the results. In terms of projects, the work that I do with Oxfam has definitely left a lasting mark on me. Going to Kenya, to the Congo ... you can’t help but come back and see the world in a different light.

What’s next? So much! Too much! No ... honestly, I have a huge amount on, and that’s the way I like it. I am just on deadline for publishing my new biannual magazine, The Hunger. It’s over 500 pages, and I have shot almost all of it myself. Next year, I have an exhibition in China, one in Japan, and a huge one at NRW Dusseldorf. I am also currently in the middle of publishing three books - two with amazing make-up artists, and a third art directed by my wife, Tuuli. What do you think about the use of Photoshop? Post production is an important tool in modern photography. Retouching gets bad press, but only because it has gone too far in some images. There is definitely scope to be enormously creative using retouching - it’s not all about making people thinner, although you would never guess this from how it is presented in the press. Personally, in general I try to keep things as real as possible, and I capture as much as I can in camera, and only use retouching to work on blemishes, or to achieve a special effect. I shot a whole project on Polaroid which could not be manipulated. Finally, what tips would you give to fellow photographers hoping to follow in your footsteps? Keep an open mind in all respects. Embrace new technology. Watch as many films as possible, go to exhibitions, eat in new places. Don’t prejudge your subjects. Basically, keep culturally aware and open to new people and new experiences

Tell us about your recent collaboration with Damian Hirst for ‘Myths, Monsters and Legends’. How was it like working on that project? I’ve known Damien since the early days of Dazed. We’ve always stayed in touch because we have a lot of things in common including being massive fans of Tommy Cooper. I’ve always had a fascination with the myths and narrative of the ancient world. When I realised it was a shared interest with Damien and something he was already thinking about, we thought it would be interesting to explore it in a modern context. The exhibition is the result of something that evolved organically from that starting point. John Rankin Waddell

People

Ravi Pillai:

Serial Entrepreneur Bahrain Confidential talks exclusively to the man who is intensely proud of his homeland of Kerala and whose company is the largest employer of Indians in the entire Gulf. You were one of the few Gulf-based Indians to be given the Padma Shri award, one of India’s most prestigious civil honours. What else do you wish to achieve during your career? Achievements and receiving honours were never an ambition. I am thankful to the Government of India for bestowing the prestigious award. The desire to provide good service to humanity is what I strive for at all times. You set up the Upasana Hospital and Research Centre in Kerala. How important is it to provide free health care for the poor and do you plan to open any more hospitals or centres to help? I personally feel that each and every person, rich or poor, should have access to the health care he or she needs. Unfortunately the ever growing costs for health care severely restricts access to the poor, the aged, and those with catastrophic health problems. At Upasana, we strive to provide patients with the safest, highest quality and most accessible care while doing our part to make sure our services are affordable. We are committed in providing the best health care services for the citizens of the world. As a serial entrepreneur with thousands of employees working for you, you are considered an influential and important person. What advice would you give to people wishing to follow your path of success? Hard work is very important, along with sincerity and 100 per cent dedication and commitment. People must also have positive attitudes and be disciplined with themselves. I feel these factors combined together are the pillars for success. You own The Raviz, a five-star hotel property with seven-star facilities which was recently inaugurated. Do you have any other projects in the pipeline and what made you want to become involved in the hospitality industry?

30 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

I was always fascinated by the way a hotel could make a person feel that ‘home away from home’ feeling. I always knew hospitality would be the perfect fit for me and I am very happy with the decisions that I have made to venture into this particular industry. There a few projects that we are presently considering but it is too early to comment on these projects at the moment. What is the most demanding project you have ever worked on? Each and every project has its own demands and challenges so it is hard to pinpoint a particular one. You have a great passion for your homeland and are involved with a lot of charity work including donating land to 200 orphanages in Kerala. How important is it to give back and do you feel satisfied to be the single largest employer of Indians in the Gulf? In a way yes, I feel satisfied to be in the position to provide employment opportunities to so many Indians abroad. It is rewarding to be able to help them provide for themselves and for their families and to live a better and more enriched life. How are you working towards a brighter future for the younger generation, both in Kerala and Bahrain? Younger generations are the future of the world. It is the responsibility of each and every person to guide the younger generation to ensure that the world is a happy and peaceful place to live. Our foundations are conducting many activities like imparting education and training to the younger generation which helps them to be self-reliant and able to contribute to the growth of society. What has been the proudest moment of your career and what message do you wish to convey to aspiring entrepreneurs? The proudest moments of my career was when we were able to achieve timely

Bahrain Is Back! So there is no excuse for being a Billy No Mates with no life!

e certainly don’t need to remind anybody that this year has been pretty turbulent for Bahrain and its residents. But rather than focus on the negatives – we want to focus on the positives. With misfortune comes fortune and if we stay positive and focused and believe in those who are driving the country forward opportunities will present themselves to all of us.

But more importantly let’s look at what Bahrain already offers to the majority of us living here - a fabulous lifestyle - and why is this? It offers a good standard of living within a liberal environment, a truly multi cultural society and fabulous facilities. But too many people are forgetting this. For the next few issues and in celebration of the 40th anniversary of National Day next month, Bahrain Confidential wants to remind our readers why we should all be proud to live in Bahrain and to encourage everyone to get back out there and start enjoying everything that is on offer.

The weather is becoming more perfect by the day. The parties are back but if that’s not your scene - why sit at home when you could be mingling with likeminded individuals sipping cocktails at one of the many five-star hotel pools? Basically there is everything on offer in Bahrain to make you look and feel good but more importantly to have fun. So there is no excuse for being a Billy No Mates with no life! So come on guys let’s get out there and start making the most of what we have because we’re quite confident that you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Working Towards Socially Responsible Business

Embedding ethics into core strategy makes good business sense. We talk to Al Safir’s Quality Control Manager, Tapan S. Ghimire, on why it’s important for companies - big or small - to be socially responsible. It is only individuals who can act responsibly,” says Ghimire, a quality management systems veteran who is Al Safir’s Lead Auditor for Quality, Occupational Health and Safety as well as Food Safety management. “A company is as ethical as its people – every single one of them,” he added. So what is responsible business, we ask. Ghimire explains that it is now “an integral

part of corporate business philosophy and as Al Safir is continuously flourishing in the regional market and in the international arena,” he emphasises that “it is time to take the ownership of our activities towards environment, community and society and other aspects of business ethics.” According to Ghimire, a key challenge for companies is how to manage the ethical operation of their business. Ethical issues arise in four main areas: the supply chain, the local community the workplace, and customers. Responsible Business is a very broad subject, however, Ghimire says that on a daily basis, the hotel ensures that they carry out best practices that include: energy saving activities, taking responsibility for the health and safety of their employees and customers; demonstrating responsibility for social and ethical issues in the company, as

well as in the local and global communities; and reducing their negative impact on the environment. Among specific initiatives, Al Safir Hotel launched their business ethics awareness programme last month, which provides employees with tools to identify potential ethical and compliance issues and raise them with the appropriate leaders within the organisation. They recently conducted a blood donation drive as part of their responsibility towards the local community. From a practical standpoint, Ghimire says that Responsible Business “is a way of doing business where one incorporates economic, social and environmental issues into all decision making processes.” Some specific considerations include: Resource consumption and its impacts what goes into the hotel (energy, water, raw materials etc.); Emission and waste what comes out of the hotel (CO2 emissions, grey and sewage water, solid and hazardous waste); Encouraging Bahrainisation; Human rights (nondiscrimination, fair pay, non-child labour) and Resource Conservation (water and electricity consumption) just to name a few. It is this last point Ghimire also wants to emphasise since Al Safir is already certified in ISOIMS comprising quality, food safety and occupational health and safety management system; and it would be another

achievement for the company if it implements environmental management system or the Go Green culture which is globally in demand these days and most corporate clients around the world are interested to be in business partnership with companies who have Go Green Practices in place. Paving The Way For Bahrain’s Health Tourism

Dr Hanann A. Wahed Marafie is considered to be one of the leading dermatologist and Cosmetic dermatologists in the region. With over 16 years of experience within the industry she is well known for introducing many of the latest and most advanced technologies and treatments to Bahrain. Bahrain Confidential caught up with Dr Marafie and was not at all surprised with what she had to say: “I’m moving to larger premises to accommodate the new machines that I’m bringing to Bahrain. There is so much advancement in rejuvenation treatments and I don’t want to be restricted to what I can offer to my clients. Surgery should only be considered as a last resort or for very severe cases these days. Also I’m a strong believer in health tourism whereas most companies who facilitate this focus on encouraging people to leave Bahrain to have treatments. I believe Bahrain’s location is superb for encouraging people from around the region and beyond to come here. So although my current practice will still be operating, I have found a superb location close to the airport which offers very comfortable surroundings, a great

atmosphere but more importantly, privacy. A car will collect and return the patient to the airport. If they wish to stay overnight we can arrange that too.” When asked what has encouraged Dr Marafie to expand when a lot of people in Bahrain are talking about downsizing, her response was: “That’s exactly why I’m doing this.

“I’m not at all concerned about investing over here as in my opinion Bahrain will just become stronger.” Since February too many people have been talking the market down. I’ve had so many calls from friends and family enquiring if I am leaving Bahrain. Why should I do that? This is paradise and by May I had decided that it was about time that I showed everybody that I meant what I was saying because as far as I’m concerned my clients from abroad are still very happy to travel here. So

Dr Hanann Marafie

currently offers: • Treatment for a range of skin problems including acne • Advanced laser technology for all skin colour and types • Ultrasonic crystal peels for treating pigmentation, wrinkles and acne scars • Chemical Peels • Anti ageing procedures including Botox and fillers • Mesotherapy for hair loss, cellulite and wrinkles • Non-surgical body treatments • Face and body lifting with the most advanced equipment

I’m not at all concerned about investing over here as in my opinion Bahrain will just become stronger.” Although Dr Marafie’s investing more in her equipment therefore giving clients more choice, she is adamant that this investment will not be reflected in the prices. “I get my satisfaction from seeing the results and everyone has more choice than ever to go elsewhere, so my priority is to make sure the patient is comfortable with the procedure that they’re having but more importantly I establish a good relationship with them.” The new machines are expected towards the end of this month so in the December issue of Bahrain Confidential we will highlight the new treatments that Dr Marafie has on offer – just in time for the National Day celebrations and the festive holidays

The reputable doctor and cosmetic surgeon Dr Pierre Clero, moved to the Philippines in 2001 to reinvent his career and after ten years researching, he wrote his bestseller ‘Stop The Clock’. With clinics around the world, he currently resides in Bahrain where he has opened a clinic and lives with his family.

Cosmetic Excellence 48 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

Bahrain is Back! Medical Where did you train and how long for? Had you always wanted to be a cosmetic surgeon? Yes, I have always wanted to be a cosmetic surgeon. I graduated from the Medical University of Paris in 1976 and practiced neurosurgery, specialising in brain traumatology which was very stressful, so my friend told me to consider doing something else and the artistic aspects of cosmetic surgery persuaded me to explore the field. I trained in Brazil and have taught students around the world including France, Germany and Peru. The whole training process takes around 15 years and most of it is hands-on work which helps speed up the learning process. You have been a cosmetic surgeon for 30 years and have over 18 years experience in LA. Tell us about your experience there and whether there was more demand? Can you tell us about any of your Hollywood A-list clients? Unfortunately I have signed many confidentiality forms so I cannot give you any of the A-listers’ names but they are people that you would imagine, many actors and actresses, people in the public eye. Our clinic is situated in the heart of Los Angeles in Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive so our clients are often wealthy and coming from showbusiness they can afford a number of treatments. The prices there are often around five times more expensive than in other parts of the world. You have many clinics around the world, are your clients normally older or in places like LA where appearance is everything, are you often found dealing with people in their 20’s and 30’s? In LA especially where appearance is incredibly important for livelihood, we see lots of young people coming in, mainly for cosmetic procedures rather than lifts or facial surgery. It is rare to see people as young as their twenties, it is mainly over thirties. I like to say we provide them with their desired treatments from head to toe and we see on average three patients per day for cosmetic procedures. Your laboratory “Clero MD” is the first and only laboratory in the world to use genetic science using the ‘human genome project’. How is this process carried out? We have a very unique process where a compound is designed specifically for a person, customised and tailor-made opposed to ‘stuff off the rack’. A swab of saliva is taken to create the skincare

cream just for you, which normally tskes around one month. The finished product is a cream which the customer can use as part of a daily routine, working perfectly as it is the rfght combination for the patient’s genetic profile. We also customise for regenerative medicine compounded cream designed according to your hormonal levels. Our customers receive new cream every month from special laboratories. What brought you to Bahrain and what sort of clients do you see here? Do they differ a lot from other countries? I set up the clinic with my Bahraini friend Dr Hassan Al Arrayed and Dr John Saba who already resides here and I have been here since May. We see many clients from Saudi Arabia and it is extremely important to respect the people and their religion. Obviously things here are stricter than places such as LA so you have to respect each client and how they want certain things done. Opinion

Setting Boundaries

Our resident Counsellor, Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist talks about this essential skill, which we all need in order for us to have healthy and loving relationships.

I

f we have a lack of boundaries within our relationships, they can become dysfunctional, toxic and unhappy. By setting clear boundaries, we define our needs, rights and feelings to others. Many of us, who have been raised within dysfunctional families, have had little experience of how to set healthy boundaries and some are unaware of what a healthy boundary is. However, in order to take care of ourselves in our relationships, we must overcome our meekness and low self-esteem and assert our rights.

preventing people from getting physically or emotionally close to them. Those whose boundaries that are too slack can confuse a physical relationship as a loving relationship, may be promiscuous, attention seeking and can get intimate with others too fast. They take on the feelings of others as their own, become overwhelmed emotionally, give too much and need constant reassurance. Those with slack boundaries lead melodramatic and insecure lives. However, not slack or too rigid are those

The following are examples of somebody who would need to learn how to set boundaries: • Inability to say ‘no’ to requests that are stressful • Feeling overly responsible for other people’s needs and feelings • Compulsive people-pleasing behaviour • Becoming upset and drained, when others are upset • Mimicking the opinions of others around them Our boundaries define how we interact with others and how we allow others to interact with us. Without boundaries, we give permission for others to treat us how they choose to; we would blame ourselves for everyone else’s negative behaviour and we would take on everyone else’s problems as our own. Our lives would be out of control and familiar feelings would be: shame, resentment and guilt. Some people can be too polarised with their boundaries, (too rigid or too slack). Those that are rigid with their boundaries appear aloof, distant and emotionally devoid. Self sufficiency is usual for them and they remain guarded without expressing their needs and feelings or asking for help. A barrier is often erected

will get you there. Setting boundaries takes determination, practise and a clear vision that it is perfectly acceptable to have others treating you how you wish them to. When you feel yourself nagging, whining and complaining, this is an alarm bell ringing that a boundary needs to be set. Listen to yourself, figure out what it is you need to say, and then communicate it calmly. A boundary could be - ‘I feel upset when you shout at me, I will not accept you shouting at me. If you continue to shout at me I will leave the room’ - clearly confident and with a deep dignity of yourself and how you wish others to behave towards you. At the beginning stages of setting boundaries, others (especially those that are used to manipulating or abusing you) may become upset and enhance their negative behaviour. This is when your strength, resolve, calmness and determination needs to increase. Most people will eventually respect your boundaries (if you continue to repeat them and put them in place). What then occurs are happier and mutually respectful relationships, whereby an equal power exists with both people’s needs being met. Setting boundaries ensure you personally grow, it ensures your inner yearnings are nurtured. It guarantees that your relationships become loving, mutually giving and respectful. Relationships can be flowing, harmonious and happy, as well as a journey in understanding ourselves. What relationships can you work on today, thus ensuring you receive the love, respect and happiness you deserve?

“Without boundaries, we give permission for others to treat us how they choose to ....” with healthy boundaries (the secure, firm, yet flexible person). This person knows how to give support, love and respect and knows how to accept support, love and respect. They are responsible for their own happiness and allow others to do the same. They are never aggressive, angry and negative, but assertively express themselves in a calm, loving and respectful manner. Setting boundaries is never about being responsible for the other person’s feelings and reactions, it is about clearly communicating your needs, feelings, and rights. You may feel selfish and guilty when you first set a boundary, however, conviction, calmness and clarity about what you need to convey

s a l o c i NBudzynski Nicolas Budzynski General Manager of Bushido

Where did you last shop?

I am not much of a crazy shopper and tend to rely on my mood to decide when and where to go. Recently, I went to Montblanc to get a birthday present for a close friend of mine. A simple, pure and elegant brand. 54 | Bahrain Confidential | November 2011

What holidays do you have planned? A short trip to Dubai might take place this month to develop projects for Bushido with the regional Buddha Bar office, but this is not yet confirmed. All will depend on the business demand here in Bahrain, we are all hoping for business to keep coming back.

What is your current favourite dining spot? This is a difficult one as I believe Bushido is one of the best. I really enjoy the outside terrace of Monsoon for the atmosphere, and I think most people will agree the best pizza can be found at La Chocolat. I also enjoy escaping to the Aroma café for a shisha and its nice selection of food. The best potential restaurant is, in my opinion, Block 338.

What is your favourite brand?

It depends, but I have more of a simple and elegant style, with sometimes a hint of ‘out of the ordinary’. I would opt for brands like Reiss, Lacoste or Paul Smith.

What have you been gossiping about? I am not much of a gossiper,

Where is your favourite destination?

but lately my talk topics have been around work to be honest. We have done a great job by introducing New York City! First of all because it is a busy and trendy the classy and glamourous city, and second, because my big brother lives there. Fashion TV In the restaurant, lounge and club industry, New events to Bahrain and are now busy York is a dream destination preparing great projects for the with a wide variety of concepts and offers. I guess if end of the year and one can succeed in New York, one can 2012 … but shhhhhh … we will keep it secret succeed anywhere. for later!

The

Makeover

Last month, we promised we’d show you Louise Edwards’ amazing transformation. We can tell you the lady was busy! She had a series of cosmetic and dental treatments, image consultation and personal shopping advice, fabulous make-up and hair style change - she got only the best from our experts.

Louise before the makeover

Dental Consultation and Treatment

Dental Consultation and Treatment Dr Rajeshwari A V

Dr Rajeshwari A V, a specialist (Endodontist and Conservative Dentist) at the Dental department at Royal Bahrain Hospital saw Louise for an initial consultation after which she devised a treatment plan for her based on her observations. Being a chronic smoker, Dr Rajeshwari saw that Louise has some severe staining on her teeth that’s due to nicotine, and she also suffers from periodontitis which has affected her gums. Her treatment plan included cleaning to control the gum infection; after which she will have some filling to correct the alignment on her front teeth and finally, Louise will get her teeth bleached. Dr Rajeshwari says that Louise needs a few more treatments to get the desired results. Meanwhile, she advised her that she should cut down on smoking if she wanted to maintain her dental health. For consultations and enquiries, contact Dr Rajeshwari on Tel. +973 1724 6814.

Cosmetic Treatment with Dr Dean Cunha Gomes

Last month, Dr Dean gave Louise some Botox injection on the area between the eyebrows as well as a conservative Botox treatment on her forehead just to relax the area a bit, but not too much that her eyelids would look a bit droopy. She also had some fillers on the tear trough and the chin to make her profile look better. After her initial Botox and fillers session, Dr Dean gave her a topup treatment and he also plans to do a Fraxel laser to address the pigmentation on her cheeks. Contact Dr Dean Cunha Gomes, at the Royal Bahrain Hospital, Tel. +973 1724 6857 or +973 1724 6939.

Beauty Image Consultation and Personal Shopping

Louise and I had fun shopping for clothes at Reiss. The looks were brave, bold and beautiful. Reiss’ autumn collections have strong shapes and vivid colours that gives an image of instant smart styling, it stands out in the crowd in a very classy way. Then we headed to Valencia and Kurt Geiger for shoes, serving as the inspiration for the other outfits. I advised Louise to avoid dark clothes, and we were lucky to have Reiss’ wide range of colour palettes that was not only invigorating but sensual as well. The clothes fitted her like a glove and the shoes and accessories complemented them, giving her that ‘oomph’ that was needed in her styling. The pictures evidently project my objective in this makeover for Louise: simple classic lines interpreted in a modern fashion; confident, active, exuding style without being severe or loud in nature. I chose tailored outfits, trousers, short dresses and formal dresses that I think will inspire other women to follow the changes in her wardrobe. For image consultation, fashion and personal shopping advice, contact Juni Capulong on email: junicaps@gmail.com

Louise tells us a few words about her experience: “The whole makeover experience was fantastic and I have loved every minute of it. I’ve been very lucky to have had so many professionals giving me their full attention and time and I want to thank them all for everything they did for me and for making me feel so special. Special thanks go to Juni Capulong for pulling all the looks together. I can’t stop looking in the mirror because I love the new me! There are so many highlights that I couldn’t mention them all. I just wish it didn’t have to end.” Shopping at Reiss

Ask Dr Dean

Dr Dean Cunha Gomes of the Royal Bahrain Hospital talks skin care, anti-ageing and gives advice on cosmetic procedures. I suffer with stretch marks from my teenage years where my weight fluctuated and I have tried nearly every product on the market to reduce their appearance. How do I get rid of them once and for all or at least reduce them? Stretch marks indicate areas where the elastic fibres in the skin have broken down due to excessive stretch of the skin. Unfortunately mature stretch marks are difficult to erase. Treatments including the use of Fraxel laser help to reduce the cosmetic blemish. I have yet to see creams giving a good result. My skin is very oily, especially around the T-zone and chin. I use an oil free moisturiser however, it doesn’t seem to do the job of

controlling my skin’s oil production very well. What else would you recommend? Oily skin can be reduced by the use of an astringent or toner or a clay mask. Medicated products can be prescribed by your doctor which help significantly, but are sometimes fraught with adverse effects.

your skin to rejuvenate? Sleeping on your back is best from a wrinkle standpoint as there are no unwanted forces pushing on your face. Sleeping in other positions could lead to permanent creases on the face, neck and chest also called sleep lines. Skin rejuvenation is achieved by getting adequate sleep and rest.

Just how bad are the effects of smoking on your skin and does it really cause more wrinkles and make you look older? How long can it take to recover from the effects of smoking after you give up? Smoking can cause the skin to wrinkle earlier with uneven colouring and broken blood vessels. Lines around the eyes and mouth develop early which have been attributed to various factors from smoking. These include heat from the cigarette, narrowing of blood vessels and activation of enzymes which break down the skin’s collagen.

What is Botox composed of? What are its side effects? Botox is botulinium toxin type A, produced by a bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, considered the most powerful ever discovered. Botox causes a temporary paralysis of a muscle and the effect lasts between four to six months, after which it undergoes complete neutralisation. Side effects are generally minor but may be the paralysis of the wrong muscle group or an allergic reaction. This can result in inappropriate facial expressions which normally wear off in around eight weeks.

“Sleeping on your back is best from a wrinkle standpoint as there are no unwanted forces pushing on your face.”

Is it true that some antioxidants and vitamins really help to improve the skin’s health and quality and if so, which ones would you recommend? The three ways to ensure youthful skin are to protect your skin from the sun, don’t smoke and eat a healthy balanced diet. Vitamin and antioxidant creams can also help to improve the skin.

I have saggy eyelids which causes my eye make-up to smudge, is there any non-cosmetic procedure to address this problem? The non-surgical procedure includes using radiofrequency energy in the form of ‘Thermage’ eye treatments. The effect of the collagen causes tightening and thereby an eyelid lift. The effect of Thermage shows after two months, which progressively increases till six months

Is it true there are some sleeping positions that speed up the ageing process and that lying on your back is the best position for

Updates Picky Eating

’Picky eating’ is common in children and usually starts during pre-school years. Some children may grow out of it as they grow up but for others it may develop into a more serious problem in the form of a fussiness which may remain for years. Despite the negative effects of ‘picky eating’, studies have shown that long term effects are not so serious as children will develop tendencies for certain foods as they grow older and be able to decide for themselves what they would like to eat. However, despite an appetite building up according to calorie needs as time goes by, doctors recommend having a few rules when it comes to meal times and proper eating. Doctors also warn against meal times becoming a battle revolving around the choice of food and encourage making meal times a social or family occasion as opposed to just meal times. Punishments and rewards are usually counterproductive and unnecessary in the long run, so it would be advisable not to waste time or worry too much about your child being a ‘picky eater’.

Health New Breast Cancer Drug Can Add Five Months

A new treatment for women with HER2-positive breast cancer has been seen to slow down the progression of tumours by 40 per cent as compared to conventional drugs. Tests have shown that the new injection, combining the common treatment Herceptin with an antibody drug, appeared to temporarily stop the disease in its tracks. Patients who were given the new treatment lived for 14 months without their cancer getting worse, compared with nine months for those on normal chemotherapy. The drug consists of a protein which seeks out tumours and a toxin which is only released once inside cancer cells, reducing the damage to healthy tissue. Doctors have confirmed that it also resulted in fewer dangerous side effects than those suffered with standard treatments. More trials need to be conducted however before the drug can be considered as viable treatment.

Coffee Reduces Depression Risks

Recent research has indicated that coffee may actually be good for an individual suffering from depression. Coffee drinkers who drink up to two or three cups of coffee a day are likely to have a 15 per cent lower incidence of depression than those who rarely ever drink coffee. In fact, individuals who drink the most amount of coffee a day are least susceptible to depression. The relationship between coffee and depression has nothing to do with caffeine as researchers have concluded that it is the dose that actually makes a difference. Further studies are being conducted to determine the actual effectiveness of coffee drinking when it comes to depression, a concept that still requires further proof.

Surveys conducted recently have indicated that married couples exercise a lot less than individuals who are single or divorced. Of the adults questioned, only 27 per cent met the exercise guidelines, with 10 per cent of the women questioned being more likely to keep fit than men while of the remaining individuals questioned who did not meet the exercise guidelines, 76 per cent of the men and 63 per cent of the women were married. So why do married couples exercise a lot less? Doctors are certain that responsibilities that come with marriage and having children make it difficult to include exercise into a busy schedule. Furthermore, married people are usually older than singletons and ‘let themselves go’ as they enjoy more comfortable lifestyles, spending a lot of time in front of the television and less time making love to their spouses.

Studies have shown that the age at which men are screened for bowel cancer needs to be reduced by a decade to ensure that lives are saved. The disease now known to be more common in middle aged men than women, occurs as tumours called polyps which are more dangerously cancerous and benign in middle aged men as colonoscopies have revealed. Polyps are generally harmless but can develop into a cancerous growth after passing through a stage called advanced adenoma. The rate of the adenoma stage in men aged 45 to 49 is at 3.8 per cent and not much different for women who are a decade older. The awareness of this fact has put doctors on edge and men are advised to get screened for bowel cancer earlier than was necessary in the past.

BosniaA Brand New

Holiday Destination by Nick Cooksey

Kravice falls

Once known for tragedy, Bosnia and Herzegovina now seek to build a tourist industry, and it has a lot to offer Gulf visitors.

U

pon arrival we made our way to the Neretva River in the city of Konjic, offering breathtaking views of Herzegovina where we were given a presentation on rafting, said to be an unforgettable experience through the 23-kilometre long Neretva canyon. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to try the rafting myself – maybe another time!

Getting there:

I flew Turkish Air via Istanbul and am delighted to report that it was a very comfortable flight and service on board was excellent just as I have and many other passengers have now come to expect with this superb airline. I also experienced the brand new Turkish Air Business Class Lounge in Istanbul which must be the finest airline lounge I have ever visited. It not only included a snooker room, library and cooking stations with traditional Turkish delicacies on offer, but a sophisticated piano bar with a fantastic atmosphere all round. It was so nice I almost didn’t want to leave to board my connecting flight.

The largest city in Herzegovina, Mostar, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country which is where we headed later that afternoon. The ‘cafe society’ feeling of the place was thoroughly enjoyable. People sit outdoors for most of the day, relax and really take time out to enjoy their surroundings, something that should be done more often. Being surrounded in such a relaxed, I would even say idyllic, environment it was hard to believe that such a horrendous war took place sixteen years previously, lasting

Travel almost four years. The vicious Bosnian war was the worst in history since WW2, killing over 100,000 people and displacing two million. Many of the ravaged buildings still remain which adds to the sense of the place, carrying war-scars around certain areas where almost ninety per cent of the city was damaged. One of the most famous and oldest sights in Mostar is the arch stone bridge ‘Stari Most’, built in the sixteenth century which has been rebuilt since its damage in the war by Croat forces, re-opening in 2004. It has also become something of a tradition to watch the ‘jumpers’ perform daring stunts from the top of the 25-metre high bridge. The city is littered with the architectural beauty of mosques and churches which are often found next to each other and there are numerous peaceful galleries and historic museums to take in. One of the things the country prides itself

Old Bridge Bosnia

“Being surrounded in such a relaxed ‘cafe society’ environment it was hard to believe as a tourist, that such a horrendous war took place sixteen years previously.” on is the safe drinking water directly from the tap. In fact, the water was so pure that we were encouraged to drink it directly from the turquoise-green lakes. I did, it tasted clean, and I’m glad to report no after effects whatsoever. Proclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its old town, Mostar is a truly remarkable place and we enjoyed a tranquil dinner at an outdoor restaurant complete with the perfect musical ambience of a guitar player. The next morning I headed to Kravice on the River Trebiat where you can find majestic waterfalls and untouched nature, followed by a visit to Pocitelj, a small historic town and art colony representing an inspiration for artists all around Europe. Next stop was the popular tourist spot of Blagaj found in the source of the River Buna. A visit to the famous Tekkikja (lodge) and one of Europe’s largest springs, Buna are still the most popular tourist destinations where clear water flows from the depths of the caves, an unforgettable sight. I spent a few days in the capital city of Sarajevo. Sophisticated, stuffed with history and inexpensive by European standards, the old town is filled with hundreds of small shops, places of worship and charming open-air cafes in the picturesque streets. I stayed at the brand new Bristol Hotel, which is alcohol free due to its Saudi ownership. I got the feeling that no expense has been spared in its construction and fittings. It is certainly up to the same standard of luxury as any hotel in the world, though should not be confused with its sister, the Bristol Hotel in Mostar, which though comfortable, is old and basic. Sarajevo is a fascinating and quite

beautiful city, despite the constant reminders of the recent war in its many pot-marked and scarred buildings. The city is also famous for its vibrant nightlife and I found the people extremely friendly, and many of the women unusually beautiful. I visited the suburb of Sarajevo called Llidza. This is settled on a Roman colony and today, numerous traces of Roman civilisation can be found including jewellery, coins and even structural remains, with one of the main attractions being the ancient Roman spas. The historic town that was once voted one of the most beautiful places in the world by a UK newspaper. I also ventured off to the Olympic mountain of Bjelasnica (site of the 1984 Winter Olympics), covered in snow for the most of the year offering first class conditions for many snow sports and currently promoting winter tourism for the country. After exploring the peaceful mountain villages

Blagaj

Ski resort Bosnia

and fascinating panorama, we sat down to enjoy traditional Bosnian cuisine in a mountain lodge. Bosnia is still desperately seeking tourists and there is every reason for this to happen as the predominantly Muslim country’s rich culture makes it a perfect and extremely safe travel destination for Gulf visitors. The country is in its very early days of tourism and its service sector needs to be developed more, but the people seem delighted to see tourists. I had a fantastic time and recommend it as a destination for anyone with an adventurous spirit. If you wish to know anything further, or require specific recommendations feel free to email me at nick@ArabianMagazines.com and I will do my best to honestly answer your questions For reservations and other information contact Turkish Airways on Tel. +973 1751 6100 visit www.thy.com or go to their office at the lobby of the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel.

Opinion

Towards

Zero Waste

Eng. Rehan Ahmed

The literally mounting problem of waste - its disposal and management - is proving to be a challenge for virtually every country on the planet. Our resident environmentalist Engr Rehan Ahmed tackles the issue.

W

aste management is one of the major environmental challenges being faced equally by all developed and developing countries and by urban and rural communities. It includes municipal, industrial, agricultural and healthcare waste which is generated due to various human activities. Waste that is generated is required to be stored, separated, transported, treated and disposed, all of which have economic, social and environmental burdens to be taken by the respective municipalities and government organisations. From 3Rs, i.e., Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, we are now moving towards Zero Waste, which is a new concept spreading around the world as a final solution to waste. ZERO WASTE is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused and utilised and any remaining waste sent for treatment and disposal (to landfills and incinerators) is minimal. Zero Waste is a powerful concept that challenges old ways of thinking and inspires new attitudes and behaviour. It is a multifaceted approach to conserve the Earth’s limited resources. Zero Waste promotes the implementation of legislations including levies and taxes that lead to producers and consumers paying the true cost of resource consumption. It helps communities achieve a local economy that operates efficiently, sustains good jobs and promotes self-reliance, employment creation, reducing spending on resources and waste management. The Zero Waste

concept looks at why so much waste is being generated in the first place and addresses it at the source. Zero waste maximises recycling, minimises waste, reduces consumption and ensures that products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into nature or the marketplace. Implementing Zero Waste will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health. For example soft drink glass bottles are made utilising resources and are cleaned and filled with products. After initial use, the bottles are often discarded in waste streams where it ends up at landfills or

It is important to distinguish recycling from Zero Waste. Biodegradable plastic is a prominent example. One side argues that biodegradation of plastic is wasteful because plastic is expensive and environmentally damaging to be produced either from starch or petroleum. The manufacturing process requires the same materials and energy costs. Factories are built, raw materials are procured, investments are made, machinery is imported and used, human labour input is utilised all of which bear significant costs. Even if the plastic is biodegraded after a single use, all of those costs are lost. Thus, it is important to design plastic parts for multiple reuse or perpetual lives rather than single use. The other side argues that keeping plastic out of a dump or the sea is the sole benefit of interest. In Kamikatsu, eastern Japan, they follow the ‘Zero Waste’ policy. Residents compost all their food waste and sort other rubbish into 34 different categories, prompting them to cut down on waste generally and food waste in particular. Non-food waste is processed either in local shops which accept goods for recycling in Zero Waste Centre. Some incentives are provided to the residents like food coupons and gifts are given to participants. If all communities and companies adopt cradle-to-cradle responsibility of materials, zero waste would be achievable. Zero Waste is about living better, simpler and smarter n

“The Zero Waste concept looks at why so much waste is being generated in the first place and addresses it at the source.”

segregated for recycling. But with a zero waste concept, the bottle is re-used and returned to the point of sale since it is tied up with a deposit, which is returned to the bearer upon redemption. The bottle is then washed, refilled, and resold again. The only material waste is the wash water whereby energy loss has been minimised. The concept of Zero Waste first originated in the US and a dedicated Zero Waste Institute (ZWI) now exists. ZWI calls for the redesign of all of the products of industry and commerce, and the processes that produce, sell and make use of them, so that discard never takes place and waste generation is avoided. In the past decade, the zero waste movement has gained publicity and has moved from ‘theory into action’ by focusing on how a ‘zero waste community’ is structured and behaves.

An Irresistible Design

BMW 6 Series Coup interior

The All New BMW 6 Series Coupé, inspired by a passion for aesthetics and dynamics has arrived in Bahrain.

F

ollowing the launch of the BMW 6 Series Convertible earlier this year, the new 6 Series Coupé has been launched at the Euro Motors showroom and is set to amaze car enthusiasts with irresistible design and driving dynamics. The new model’s extra length and width over its predecessor model is combined with a lower height to produce a strikingly lowset and powerful design. The new interpretation of the traditional BMW Coupé‘s proportions features more curves which is complemented by classy and eye-catching design. The exterior paintwork can be ordered in a choice of eight metallic and two nonmetallic shades for customers. The driver-oriented cockpit layout and a dynamic forward-surging movement define the interior design. The centre section of the instrument panel including the central air vent and climate control is angled slightly towards the driver and the transition between the centre console and instrument panel can be accentuated with optional stitching for the leather surfaces.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupé is emphasised with numerous BMW ‘Connected Drive’ optional driver assistance technology features for enhanced comfort and safety. These include a high-tech rear-view camera, surround view, night vision with pedestrian recognition and a park assistant. In addition, this is the only car in its segment,

The eight-cylinder, 650i, 4.4-litre engine produces a maximum output of 407 hp. The engine is unique with the turbochargers positioned in a V-shaped area between the cylinder banks, as well as its TwinPower turbo, producing an instantaneous wave of power. The BMW 640i Coupé is powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine in which the TwinPower turbo technology brings both direct injection and valvetronic fully variable valve control to the table. This combination optimises both the responsiveness and efficiency of the 3.0-litre, generating a maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp at 5,800 rpm and puts its peak torque of 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) on tap between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm

A Recipe

For Unbridled Driving Fun

As the sportiest model yet, the new Mini Coupé sees the brand breathe new life into its successful racing history.

T

he first-ever Mini Coupé has been launched in Bahrain, expanding its product family with the launch of a model geared squarely to maximising driving fun. It indulges the driver with a level of agility unmatched in the small car segment, along with a unique body and interior concept and is the first twoseater in its line-up. The brand’s innovative design comes into play through its flat silhouette and innovative ‘helmet roof’. This unique design gives the coupé a sporty and individual appeal and in addition to the integral roof spoiler, an active rear spoiler optimises airflow at higher speeds. The tailgate opens extremely high and boasts a large luggage area, displaying outstanding versatility in day-to-day

driving and has a range of eight exterior paint finishes to choose from with the roof painted as standard in a contrasting colour. The Mini Coupé is the brand’s first model to adopt a three-box body structure with a strikingly stepped rear end. The car’s distinctive lines are expressed in the customary design language and are combined with unmistakable styling

Coupé are all focused on delivering optimum performance for the driver. As a result, the new car radiates the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling with a whole new depth of intensity and achieves the best performance statistics ever recorded by a volume-produced Mini. The mini delivers impressive acceleration and races from rest to the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark in just 9.0 seconds. Its top speed stands at 204 km/h (127 mph). This performance contrasts with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 5.4 litres per 100 km (52.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 127 grams per kilometre making it high in energy but low in carbon dioxide emissions. The new design can be ordered with the most powerful petrol engines, with outputs ranging from the 122 hp of the Mini Cooper Coupé, to Mini Cooper S Coupé (184 hp) and all the way up to the Mini John Cooper Works Coupé, producing 211 hp

“It indulges the driver with a level of agility unmatched in the small car segment ...” features giving it an aesthetic edge. The precise Electric Power Steering, the standard-fitted DSC stability control system, powerful brakes and measures designed specifically to optimise rigidity ensure the driver can enjoy the ultimate in the go-kart feeling. Bahrain is Back! Dining Out

Italian Flair, Panzanella Salad

South African Vibe Experience exquisite Italian cuisine at The InterContinental Regency Bahrain’s Medzo restaurant. Cap the night off and head to Downtown and get lost in the rhythm of the music performed by its South African band, U Turn.

Pollo al Marsala

Crostata di Marmellata

A visit to Medzo is complete with everything that you’d expect from an Italian restaurant - simply good food. This month Medzo takes you to a journey of the many flavours and cooking styles of Tuscany - the very heart of Italian cooking. Known for simplicity in its dishes, Tuscan cuisine usually consists of fresh breads, cheeses, vegetables, locally raised meats and sunripened fruits - all reflecting the region’s flavours. Start your experience with the appetiser, Panzanella, a salad made of freshly picked tomatoes, bread, onions and basil marinated in olive oil. To get your appetite going, try the Ribollita Toscana, a soup which in Italian means ‘reboiled’, and is originally made by reheating minestrone soup from the previous day.

On to the main course, where the real deal starts. Medzo presents Pollo al Marsala, a classic Italian dish made by shallow frying a chicken escalope with Marsala, shallots, dill and cream. Marsala is a Scilian dessert wine that is popular throughout Italy. Its flavours complements the chicken once reduced in the sauce, with the shallots, dill and cream. Winding down, try one of Tuscany’s most famed desserts, the Crostata di Marmellata - a baked, round shaped tart filled with locally produced preserves. The ‘Flavours of Tuscany’ is only BD15++ and is on every Wednesday night with a threecourse dinner menu and free flow of the best Italian wine.

For reservations and inquiries contact The Intercontinental Regency Bahrain on Tel. +973 1720 8308.

The Fun Begins at Downtown Bar!

Leila, Authentic Lebanese Cuisine

T

Cake

he story of Leila begins with the legend of a young lady growing up in the tranquil mountains of Lebanon. Raised by her grandmother she was taught many culinary secrets and after moving to the city, Leila opened her own restaurant where guests could enjoy traditional cuisine and this restaurant still exists today. Staying true to the story, the restaurant in Bahrain is full of traditional interior and finishing touches will soon be added including a shisha bar and pictures of Leila so guests can learn about the rich history of the restaurant here, and in Lebanon. The atmosphere is homely and relaxed with plenty of light and the feeling of vast space with the double-height windows stretching up to the ceiling. It is obvious that customer service is one of the restaurant’s main concerns as the Manager Mario Ephrem who has been in the food industry since the age of 18 said, “You cannot afford to make a wrong move, information gets around fast in such a small country.” So we began with a number of hot and cold mezze dishes, only some of the great choice they have on offer. Most of these dishes are extremely healthy and guilt-free but delicious at the same time, what more could you want? The stuffed vine leaves and eggplant topped with yoghurt left

Leila restaurant really is a gem in the heart of Seef, serving up delicious authentic Lebanese cuisine.

our tastebuds tingling and the tabbouleh tasted like no other. Many of Leila’s dishes contain top secret ingredients and one of the most surprising hot appetisers was the Basterma, rolls filled with meat and cheese which really melt in your mouth, with neither flavour overpowering the other, a very tasty treat before the mains. The selection of the restaurant’s main dishes and specialities is also impressive, all of which were presented beautifully and looked thoroughly appetising. We were most surprised with the chicken liver dish. Don’t get us wrong, it looked fantastic but when most people hear the word ‘liver’ they tend to screw up their noses. We needn’t have been apprehensive; the liver was cooked in a pomegranate sauce and was surprisingly one of our favourites. Another delicious option was rice and meat which had been cooked to perfection inside bread, washed down

with a refreshing home-made mint and lemon drink. To finish off we were treated to dessert, a traditional noodle-covered cake, Osmanlieh and candy-floss filled with ice-cream, Ghazal Beirut, topped with shaved pistachios, heaven! Leila restaurant is open from 9am to 11.30pm daily and located at Al A’ali Mall. For reservations, Tel +973 1756 6556 or visit www.leilarestaurant.com

The Secret to Speaking Arabic... in only 10 Days Used by the CIA, because results come so fast! Pimsleur is unlike any language program on the market today. You will amaze business associates, friends and family as you begin conversing in Arabic within days using this new method. The Pimsleur language program contains the exclusive Graduated Interval Recall TM process which allows for effortless absorption and activation of a foreign language. That’s why this powerful program is used by the CIA and NSA because results come so fast! Studies reveal that native-speakers use only about 2,500 distinct words and phrases on a daily basis. With Pimsleur, it’s not how many words you know, but rather, which words you can use. By aiming each lesson at teaching you to use those 2,500 words, Pimsleur teaches you to speak the most in the least amount of time. The best opportunity you will ever have to learn Arabic Pimsleur teachs you to speak Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the form of Arabic

used uniformly throughout the Arab World. It is the language of Arab news media, intellectual life, literature, and universally taught in schools throughout the Middle East. When different Arab nationalities converse they typically use MSA for the sake of clear communication. Speakers of MSA are able to effectively converse in any Arabic country, and find it easy to adopt to the numerous local dialects spoken in particular regions of the Arab world. The 16 CD course consists of 30 half hour lessons. Simply repeat each lesson until you have absorbed about eighty percent of it, which usually takes 2-6 days, then move on to the next lesson. After completing the course you will be able to speak conversational Arabic! SPECIAL OFFER Lowest price guaranteed This is the full 16 CD Pimsleur Gold course of 30 lessons that sells on Amazon. com for $251. Yet we are making it available for a total price of BD39 which includes home delivery within Bahrain.

Pimsleur is what language learning should be: quick, fun, and easy!

We accept Master Card, Visa and Amex, or you can pay cash on delivery if you prefer An objective opinion by renowned language expert DEREK BICKERTON Phd. Explain the concept behind Pimsleur. Pimsleur courses expose the learner to real-life dialogue in real-life situations. So, it’s going to keep the learner interested and teach the learner a language that can be used immediately. There’s an immediate payoff! Why do you think Pimsleur works? What makes Pimsleur most effective is that it engages the learner from the very first stage and presents him with situations that hold his interest and attention-and it’s been carefully prepared to do so. Let’s face it, a lot of foreign languages learning can be terribly boring. To find a language program that holds the learner’s interest is really something quite rare. And I think Pimsleur certainly does that.

About DEREK BICKERTON, Phd.

Derek Bickerton entered academic life, after a year’s postgraduate work in linguistics at the University of Leeds. For twenty-four years he was a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Hawaii, having meanwhile received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Cambridge. He is the author of many books, including Language and Species, published by MIT Press.

User reports confirm success: (Full copies + other letters available on request) People ask me where I studied Arabic and are amazed that I had learned my Arabic from CD’s. Amy L. I have tried to learn Arabic and tried different courses, but I must say that this one is by far the best. The way the course is built up really makes you remember the words. Ingunn Cecilie Bugge The greatest way to learn a language that I’ve ever come across. L.A.L. The program worked flawlessly. The friends I met on my first (Middle East) trip were shocked to hear I could speak their language. John Schilling “THE PIMSLEUR APPROACH IS the best program available on the market today. I know because I have audited a dozen of them.” D. M. Rothschild, Ph.D.

What the International press say: “ Pimsleur is extremely thorough and easy to use!” “This is the easiest and simplest language method... outstanding!”

“Unique system will have you carrying on simple conversations at the end of just four hours.” “I would have bet that I’d collect the money-back guarantee, until I played Lesson One... I was hooked!”

Taxis

Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.

News Bites Message in a Bottle

Canadian Harold Hackett has taken social networking to a whole new or perhaps old level. Hackett who lives in Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, used discarded juice containers to hold dated letters for which he asked a response and surprisingly enough, received more than 3,100 replies. His strange hobby began in 1996 and he has received replies from all over the world since then depending on where the tides carried his letters. The BBC has called this, “the oldest form of social networking”.

Cops Get High!

Three Houston, Texas police officers are under investigation after getting high on pot brownies they confiscated from a 19-year-old. Nicholas Hill who has previously been arrested on charges of drug possession is the one who made the accusations against the police officers but no one seems to trust him any less despite his prior convictions. The case against the officers is pretty strong and they will be facing felony charges for the destruction of evidence and patrolling the city under the influence.

Bright Blue Eyes

Imagine hiding behind a mask so you cannot be recognised only to be recognised for your bright blue eyes! That was what happened with 19year-old, Conor McClelland of Bellevue, Pennsylvania who was recently charged with attempted robbery after a store clerk acknowledged him to be a regular customer because of his eyes which happen to be a very distinctive blue. McClelland was easily recognised despite the hoodie and bandana he was wearing over his face and ended up hiding from the police after having stolen … nothing.

Bizarre

News Some interesting stuff the Confidential team gathered from around the world.

‘Toe Suck Fairy’ Arrested

Micheal Wyatt Robert was arrested recently after being identified in a line-up by two women who claimed he stopped them to comment on their feet before asking them if he could suck their toes. The two women were not the first to make such accusations. In fact, Robert came to be known as the ‘Toe Suck Fairy’ in Arkansas, US earlier in the 1990s after being charged with a series of assaults, one of which included him posing as a podiatrist in order to fondle a woman’s toes. He has also been seen to have really messed up toes. That explains a lot!

Look How Long My Nails Are!

Chris Walton or ‘The Dutchess’ from Las Vegas has been growing her nails for 18 years and is now far from shy about showing them off. Walton’s nails measure up to ten feet and two inches on her left hand and nine feet and seven inches on her right hand, making her the woman with the longest fingernails according to the Guinness World Records. Surprisingly enough, Walton is having no trouble going about her day to day life and tries not to complain too much about her chores and doing her make-up.

Lifestyle

Horoscopes “If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree.” - Jim Rohn Scorpio

23 October - 22 November

Your willpower will be tested this month when tension and frustration come into play. You might find yourself falling into the wrong relationships with the wrong people. The right thing to do at this point is look beyond your own boundaries and through the perspective of those around you. In terms of your career and finances, things are looking up and only you can make sure that all the right decisions are made in that field.

Sagittarius 23 November 21 December

Your level of self confidence and your desires are likely to fall into balance, giving you less to worry about. You know what you want at this point in life and you can go after it. Take the time to make new plans, initiate new projects and take up new ambitions. Both your personal and professional life are in dire need of change and something new. Perhaps a new job will provide you with a more satisfactory career and financial situation.

Capricorn

22 December – 19 January

Change should be expected and although it might cause some uneasiness and discomfort, it just might be the right option for you. Business is looking positive but be careful in terms of your relationships because enmity might be looking to taunt you. Don’t waste your time worrying about it too much though because positive forces are working to make your transitions easier.

Aquarius

20 January - 18 February

You have been trying really hard to get past all your troubles and worries and at the end of this month, all your work will pay off. Your planets are now in a position to cause some difficulty in concentration but hopefully with a little extra work, that will be easy to overcome. Keep your chin up despite all your troubles because favours are coming your way and people are more than willing to be helpful.

Pisces

19 February - 20 March

This is a good month for finances and businesses and the remainder of the year is also likely to be positive. Your understanding of your own self and others is improving as is your reputation with your colleagues and superiors. Because your professional life is in good shape, you will be able to enjoy your personal life a lot better this month and this will give you the time and opportunity to work on your relationships as well. Don’t let wonderful opportunities go to waste.

Aries

21 March - 19 April

This is a favourable time of year to achieve your goals and make your dreams a reality. Disputes that you may have been having for a while will take an unexpected turn and things might just work out in your favour, so don’t give up just yet. In terms of finances, you have been running into some trouble but this situation is likely to get better if you play your cards right.

Taurus

20 April - 20 May

You might be seeing mixed results in both your career and your finances this month but don’t let that dishearten you because mixed does not necessarily mean bad. You can work on what is right for you and what will eventually take you where you want to go. You might have a few issues to deal with your co-workers and partners but if you do what needs to be done, everyone can come through satisfied. Difficulties with your significant other might just disappear with a little time and patience.

Gemini

21 May - 21 June

Your long standing issues related to your profession just might come to an end soon. Your financial and personal troubles will also be disappearing but don’t be too hasty to see the better side of everything. All things take time. Harmony and peace will find their way to you and before you know it, everything that was once rough will have become smooth.

Cancer

22 June - 22 July

This year seems to be one of transitions and that is how it’s going to be for you too. Transition is never a bad thing and most times is a good thing. If your transitions don’t make your life easier, at least be thankful that they don’t make your life worse. Some of what you do with your talent might go unnoticed but don’t let that make you question your self worth. You might be getting suspicious of some people around you and this may be wise. Be careful however, not to jump to conclusions about others.

Leo

23 July - 21 August

As a Leo, you are drawn to confusion so whatever comes your way this month, you might already be used to. You can be assured that that fact works in your favour. There will be many times when you will wonder whether to go right or left, perhaps even whether you should just go straight instead but you will be forced to decide eventually and only time will tell if your decision is the right one. A good piece of advice to follow would be, ’Listen to your heart’.

Virgo

22 August – 21 September

Things have been looking bad lately but don’t beat yourself up over it. That will only make the situation worse. You need to trust yourself and your emotions to keep yourself going. Your strength comes from you. A little bit of wisdom will do you some good and help can always be accepted but true wisdom like strength, you can find only within yourself. Learn from your experiences and remember your lessons.

Libra

22 September – 22 October

The oceans may not be very smooth for sailing this time of year but you can keep your sails up. You might find yourself in moody situations and you may feel a bit blue every now and then but a blue sky is never a bad thing, so toughen up and pull through. You might be experiencing negative emotions from your friends and loyalties might come into question but so what? Nothing lasts forever.

wonder at times why we tend to lament more than celebrate. Generally speaking, humanity has enough on its hands to warrant such behaviour. If we don’t kill each other, we can trust ‘fate’, ‘nature’, or even cosmic events to give us reason enough to lament. Wherever you turn, there is bad news. There is nothing new in all of this. Humanity’s history is replete with pain and sorrow. I suppose that had one lived in ancient times, say in Athens or Antioch, one would not learn of a typhoon in the Indian subcontinent that killed thousands. Less pain due to ignorance. Hence ignorance is bliss. Today, however, there is no hiding. Even while watching a football match on any given day, the scrolling newsreel at the bottom of the screen keeps you updated on misery and catastrophe. There is enough coming from politicians, business people and bankers, and last but not least, religious leaders who distribute enough misery to cover the planet and make the multitude of humanity suffer more when they are supposed to make their lives better and happier. The ‘American Dream’ is now a nightmare of economic madness to many people in the USA itself. It threatens to spread wide and far. Europe is contributing its share of misery through its failing banks and member states. Our corner in the world is hardly a hallmark of stability. When you see sectarian violence in Egypt, you know that there is something fundamentally wrong. Egypt, for all its history, has been a haven for all

No, it’s not about Halloween or some scary movie. Mohammad Al Rasheed ponders on humanity’s ‘daily horrors’. He shares his personal experience and finds it is hard to look away from the haunting images. religions and all ethnic groups. You are not surprised to hear of such violence in Lebanon, for example, but you never expect it in Egypt. That is the country’s history, clear and simple. The long arm of madness and terror follows you wherever you go. There is no hiding from it. The terror is almost universal these days. The days of simply worrying about a mad motorist hitting you when you step out of the house are gone forever. These days you wonder who is going to blow you up. Who is going to slit your throat simply because you belong to another creed or ethnic minority? You

places in Kenya. The British couple suggested this resort - I suppose rock stars staying there was recommendation enough. Well, little did I know. The huts have no doors, and are made from local material - bamboo and the like. No stone, no masonry, nothing. There was a comfortable bed, and a functional bathroom. That is all. Everything else was open to all and sundry. At 8pm the electricity goes out and you are left listening to the ocean and wondering what sort of animal is going to creep into bed with you. Needless to say, I was rather uncomfortable. Had I wanted this setup, I could have gone to the desert of Arabia and camped. It is at least safer. It was clear to me that the setup of the resort was designed for calmer and safer times. I did not last more than two nights there. I left my friends because I was not comfortable. What is a vacation, after all, if not comfort? They stayed behind and a couple of days after they left, the incident happened and was followed by a second one. Misery has invaded even our paid vacations. What more can you ask for? The images of the dead man and his abducted wife in that hut that I stayed in haunt me. Not only was my vacation ruined, but now somehow I feel connected to those unfortunate people who are, were, and will, forever be, bystanders caught in the mayhem of our collective misery

wonder if your children at school will come back safe and sound. You count your pennies at the checkout counter of the supermarket and find out that the raise you got has already evaporated before it was deposited in your account. We all share in this generalised view of our modern sorrow and lamentation. I want to tell you about a personal experience that made me wonder how fragile our existence is and hence the contrast between celebration and lamentation. Just two weeks before the killing of a British tourist and the abduction of his wife from a five-star resort on the coast of Kenya, I was occupying the same exact ‘hut’ where the incident happened. With a British couple and an American friend, I had planned my summer break to spend in several
