Summer again
There lies the dried landscape Glittering in the sun Like powder of gold Reflecting back the caressing arms Embracing with abundance more and more from above
Marilyn Monroe
Thanks, Jim! We couldn’t agree more with you. We will surely convey your appreciation to Tony.
As a recently married bride She is surrendering and is eager To suffocate in the tightening holds Shy and submissive Awaiting and laden bare The posture remains still Devouring with lust Never ending thirst remains Annoyed if there is a wind If disrupting their pleasure Profound in enduring delight She is overwhelmed There she remains unmoving Receiving the burning cuddles Hurting but she bothers Only to be enchanting so as to satiate his hunger
Attracted towards this submissive splendor He remains glowing with love Enduring happiness remains From the very dawn, until get drained off the late night Embracing each other, retaining the warmth of long lasting passion Shemily P John, a regular reader of Bahrain Confidential is a Lecturer living in Bahrain

I really appreciate what Tony, ‘The Dogfather’ does for animals in the kingdom. I love animals; that said I know that taking responsibility for strays is a different ball game altogether! It demands an investment of time and funds which is not easy. Despite all these odds, Tony is so dedicated to this cause. I salute him! I hope you would convey my message to him. Jim

Bahrain Confidential’s Makeover
I read that the makeover is back! I loved the previous makeover feature that your magazine had conducted. It’s amazing to see candidates undergo such dramatic change and not just basic restyling procedures. Just wondering when the next feature will be out. All the best! Reem, Mahooz
Oh yes! We already have our makeover winner and hope to come out with the feature soon; but dra matic makeovers take sometime (sigh!). Nevertheless, it’s worth the wait. We didn’t see your entry though; please do participate next time!
Interpretations
Hello, I love reading the poems by David Hollywood but find it difficult to interpret the meaning. I do get a vague idea from the introductions that you run but it would be great if the author shares a brief interpretation as well. I appreciate that different readers would perceive different meanings. Nevertheless, some guidance would be ideal. Sumaiya
Thank you for your suggestion, Su maiy a. In fact we have incorporated it in this issue; do let us know if it helped you understand the poem better!
K udos!
I really like your Not to be Missed section; it is like a one-stop-shop for what’s on and not in Bahrain. It’s great that you list interesting events in a concise manner. Keep up the good work guys! Mahala, Juffair
Thanks, Mahala! Hope you enjoy all the events for this month!

Kanye Spending Big Money to See Pregnant Kim Kardashian
Cheryl Cole
Cheryl Cole Looks Forward to Turning 30 Cheryl Cole says she feels 30 will be a “very empowering” age for her, after recently marking ten years in the music industry. I’m turning 30 in June,” she said. “I’ve had an incredible decade in this industry, with the highs and lows; “I feel the best I’ve ever felt.” Cheryl revealed that she has no plans to start work on new music anytime soon, claiming she is looking forward to having some time off after a hectic 2012 that saw the release her solo album, the greatest hits compilation and the tour with Girls Aloud.
Kanye West is doing everything he can to support Kim Kardashian during her pregnancy, even though he’s in Paris working and it’s costing six figures to do it. Kanye has been travelling abroad for the past few months for events, performances and to record a new album but is still hitting up Kim’s doctor’s appointments. We’re told Kanye has made at least three trips via private jet from Paris to LA (costing about USD100k total) so that he can be in attendance for Kim on her checkups. Kanye even reaches out to the doctors beforehand to discuss the appointments and to make certain his schedule allows him to be there. Kanye has also flown Kim out to Paris on a private jet so they could spend extra time together before Kim is set to give birth in July. Kanye and Kim Kardashian

merging from the context of architecture, the drawing has evolved from a set of basic constructive instructions to a complex notational geometric system - and an independent tool for the expression of utopias. When liberated from convention, fictional architecture becomes an idea which can explore new formal languages, develop idealised structures, form spatial concepts, tells stories and generate atmospheres. Drawing and visualising fictional architecture is a testing ground for ideas and concepts in their purest and most concentrated form. By not aiming to influence the built environment, the drawing unfolds its potential to communicate what has so far merely been imagined. The exhibition explores the selfsufficiency of architectural notation, which is on the verge of becoming an art form in its own right. As universities become the think tanks of the architectural profession, several schools have been invited to share their visions and strategies of imagination. The work displayed in this exhibition offers a key-hole view of the world of ideas and allows a glimpse of the shape that the architecture of the future may take Yumi Saito - Capacitor, Lea Valley, London 2004

David Hollywood
David Hollywood’s poem asks us to reflect on whether tensions are sometimes a consequence of simply not knowing enough about those we are in conflict with. Based upon such ignorance do we occasionally demonstrate a suspicion and mistrust of strangers, and if so are we justified in determining this as an adequate ground for discord. Are we thinking because they are born way over there and are unfamiliar, that this is a fault in them? What does this do to our desires and right to roam and discover the world?

Letter From Bahrain
John Ridley shares the importance of prayers and believing in oneself.
The Power Of Faith John Ridley shares diet tips for mommas-to-be!
T
homas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, was one of history’s greatest achievers; whilst he is famous for his invention, he is equally famous for his earlier lack of success, saying “I have not failed; I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Persistence in the face of repeated failure and hardship is no easy task, but history shows us that achievement is the result of faith and belief - even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Is there a time when giving up and moving on is the right thing to do? Is it possible that failure of one activity can lead to success in another? Anyone who has strived to achieve will have faced these questions, often repeatedly, the answer is never easy. “There are times when we struggle to know what we should do, or to see a way forward; all too often if we see light at the end of the tunnel, it seems like a long way off, with many hurdles in between.” As someone who believes in God, I’m used to questioning my faith and asking for a bit of help; why can life be so full of tribulation for some
“No matter the nature of our aspirations, be they spiritual, family, business or creative, if honourable, and sought with the right intent, we should do all we can to achieve them.” but not for others, and why are solutions to even everyday obstacles so difficult to find?” “Whether you believe in God or not, take action by yourself when faced with adversity; problems can be solved, hurdles can be overcome - you are the agent of your own change.” No matter the nature of our aspirations, be it spiritual, family, business or creative; if honourable, and sought with the right intent, we should do all we can to achieve them. There will be days when the journey seems too difficult to complete, yet with faith (in one’s self and God) obstacles are cast aside, the actions that finally lead to success will seem trivial; the most fertile ground has often been cleared by fire. Give time and energy to seek the views of others, their respect will help you believe in yourself. There are critics aplenty, listen to them, but never give up on your dreams, goals or aspirations, for you never know how right they truly are until you work to achieve them. God promised us that, “With every hardship, there is ease,” with patience, insha-Allah, He will reveal the way to success John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster, he can be contacted at john@johnridley.nu or visit his website, www.ghostwriting.me

Exclusive Interview
H&M Summer Swimwear Campaign 2013
E
ach year, H&M creates a collection which raises funds for the brand, for water projects – a scheme with WaterAid* to help some of the world’s poorest communities to access a safe supply of water. This season’s H&M for Water collection is centred around the perfect summer tie-dye bikini, which comes either in a bandeau style with a halter-neck strap, or tiefronted. Popular American artist Beyoncé Knowles endorsed this collection. She shares her experience of the campaignshoot in an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Bahrain Confidential.
BD7.9
54 | Bahrain Confidential | May 2013
How was it shooting for the new H&M campaign? I loved shooting the campaign in the Bahamas. We shot on a beach outside of Nassau and the weather was perfect. The shoot was filled with vibrant colours and was inspired by the glamour of the late 70’s. Tell us what it was like to work with director, Jonas Åkerlund? It was incredible to work with Jonas, again. We had a great time shooting the television commercial for the Mrs Carter Show World Tour and so I was looking forward to working with him on the H&M campaign. He has such a great imagination and I love seeing his visions come to life. Where does your own fierce and fabulous style come from? Well, thanks for the compliment! I think my style comes from watching my mother since the time I was a little girl; she was so stylish. She was the first person I saw mix high end pieces with more accessible styles and make it all work. I’m also inspired by my sister and love her bold approach.
Fashion What kind of clothes and accessories do you like to wear? I like sexy yet classic pieces. I also fancy prints and patterns, mixing textures as well as solid colours. How do you decide on what to wear? It depends on how I’m feeling on a particular day and luckily I have great, honest people around me to help. My stylists Ty Hunter and Raquel Smith are an influential part of the process.
BD7.9
How do you dress during the summer? I love summers; I’m always in shorts, dresses, light and flowing fabrics, and sandals.
“I love summers; I’m always in shorts, dresses, light and flowing fabrics, and sandals.”
BD4.9 (Full Set)
25 per cent of all sales from this project, by H&M will go to WaterAid. What are your thoughts on social service and are you actively involved in any projects? Absolutely! My parents taught my sister and me the importance of giving back and making a difference in another person’s life. I work closely with a number of charities from food pantries to drug rehabilitation to natural disaster relief to preventing sexual exploitation of young girls. It is one of the most rewarding things that I do. *An international NGO dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people. ched To be laun ay on 15th M
Every bride wishes to look her absolute best on her wedding day, and most of them are willing to take extreme measures that usually have limited effects. Here are the top five beauty tips that should be on your checklist two months before your wedding.
5
Aqua Black: BD10 Aqua Brow: BD19.5 Single False Lashes #9: BD8.5 False lashes #157: BD8.50 Step 1: Shape Eyebrows with Aqua Brow
Aqua Brow is the perfect waterproof eyebrow convertor with a creamy gel texture that guarantees extremely long lasting flawless eyebrows.

Step 3: Adorn Your Eyes with Aqua Black

4
Drink a lot of water regularly Stay hydrated. Make sure you finish up at least 1.5 litres daily. Nothing flushes the skin with a fresh healthy glow like water does.
Stick to a proper skincare routine Use a proper makeup remover and cleanser on a daily basis to remove dirt, excess oil and loose dead cells. Use a daily exfoliator that goes with your skin type and helps work with enzymes that break down the glue-like substance which holds the dead skin cells together.
3
Use a proper toner What many might not know is that toners are very important for your skincare routine. The dead skin cells that make it to the surface of the skin are very acidic. The toners bring the skin’s PH level back to its optimum and helps close pores to prevent them from collecting more dirt.
2
Use a moisturiser that suits your skin type Moisturisers work by reducing water evaporation from your skin, thus retaining moisture in the skin and keeping it hydrated for longer. If you have dry/dehydrated skin, use oil based moisturisers. If you have oily skin, look for water based light weight moisturiser instead.
BD4.7 Let Your Eyes Talk!
Revlon Photoready 3D Volume Mascara is a revolutionary mascara that is designed to express the eyes. With smooth and flexible polymer technology, this brush will reach every last lash delivering high volume.
BD28.7 (200ml)
The Contouring Action
Clarins created their first contouring product- Body Lift Cellulite Control. Their complementary actions like firmer and comfortable skin, stimulation of microcirculation and the immediate lifting effect leave the skin extremely beautiful. It helps reduce existing cellulite and slows down the formation of new cellulite while reinforcing the skin’s firmness. So, say bye to stubborn cellulite!
1

Shape-up This Summer!

would be best to make the session a little lighter. We discuss what fabrics work best for the summer. Though there is no exposure to the sun while working out indoors, perspiration is a concern. “Comfort must be your number one priority,” says Chris, “I generally wear a Nike dry-fit or Adidas clima-cool because these are good at locking in sweat; Even vests are good if that’s what you’re comfortable in.” He highlights that Oxygen Gym has a gagged temperature control which ensures that it doesn’t get too hot or too cold. There are quite a few programmes and packages being offered this season. There is a special Couples’ Membership which again brings out the family-oriented nature of Oxygen Gym. Zumba, Body Balance, Pilates, Taekwando, Military Fitness, Kombatt, Psycho Circuit, Calories Crusher, Yoga and more; Oxygen Gym has just the right workout for you! “It is beach season,” says Chris, with a smile, “so go in for weights with high reps and do some cardio, that will help you shed those kilos.” Small or medium weights work best with a high number of repetitions. Is there a way to strike a balance between cardio and weights? “There are different combinations of the two,” says Chris. “The most preferred way is to do weights first followed by high intensity cardio at the end of the session.” He also talks about circuit programmes which are a mix of weights and cardio throughout the session. For those who want to bulk up, he suggests doing weights first and steady-state cardio at the end to avoid burning too many calories. Working out during the summer means we need to be more conscious of keeping ourselves hydrated. Chris says that the best way is to ensure intake of water while exercising and also throughout the day. “2 litres a day is a must,” he says, and adds that this doesn’t include the water you drink during your workout! It’s a common myth that menstruating women must avoid strenuous physical activity. Chris rubbishes this but adds that women may feel a little fatigued and so it

Know Your Food John Ridley in this article talks about Genetically Modified food which is flooding our markets.
T
he ingredients within our food, as I discussed in the last month’s article, have become an increasingly emotive issue; over the coming months I will be providing some background information to help you reach an educated decision in what you choose to buy; this month I’m looking at genetically modified foods. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals created in laboratories where DNA from different species are combined - creating combinations of plant or animal genes that cannot occur naturally. GMOs have little in common with organic foods, which are produced using farming methods that do not use chemical pesticides or fertilisers, and are free of chemical additives in processing. According to the biotech industry, GMOs produce higher yields and require less water, fertilisers and pesticides. These claims have allowed the industry to flood the market with corn, soy, and cotton seeds. Grown extensively in North and South America, and India, GMOs have always been controversial many choose not to consume GM food. Opponents and proponents of GM foods have produced data to support their stance, but sufficient empirical data to accurately
assess the possible environmental damage, and effects upon human health, which will take decades to collect. GMOs are engineered to withstand higher usage of certain herbicides; as weeds and insects have rapidly become resistant to the herbicides - that the plants were modified to withstand - more and more toxic chemicals are needed to maintain yield. Data from the Indian and US

methods under drought conditions and excessive rainfall. In the EU, any food containing genetically modified organisms, or contains ingredients produced from GMOs, must be indicated on the label. Products such as flour and oils have to be labelled as GM if they are from a GM source, cheese produced using GM enzymes, and meat, milk and eggs from animals fed on GM animal feed do not need to be labelled. Last year in California, the GM industry tried to prevent the labelling of products as “free from GM”; the proponents of labelling insisted that consumers have a right to know the ingredients in the food they eat, they won the case, now the battle is being fought across the US. If what you eat is important to you, buy from shops where the staff knows the source of their products and the agricultural standards used. governments suggest that, whilst some crops do show a yield gain in the early years, over all there is a decline, this trend in yield is explained by weeds and insects becoming immune to the ever increasing volumes of pesticides and herbicides used on GM crops. The renowned scientific journal “Nature” published a report last year showing that soils managed with organic methods are better able to absorb rainfall and retain moisture, and have produced higher yields than “conventional and GM” farming

The Fast Diet
E
Get Thin Quick with the 5:2 Diet.
veryone is talking about the 5:2 Diet all the way from TV/ radio presenters through to doctors. It is such a big talk mostly due to the simplicity of the diet and the fact that not only can you lose the weight you desire but the added health benefits associated with it is proven to be beneficial. So, unlike most diets where you starve yourself for a period of time, binge and then put the weight back on; this diet has a bit more. This is considered more of a lifestyle change that anyone can or should be doing according to many health experts to improve your overall well being. The 5:2 diet also known as The Fast Diet is based on something called intermittent fasting. This involves eating normally for five days a week and “fasting” for two. On those two fasting days, you eat about a quarter of your typical calorie intake - 500 calories for women and 600 calories for men. The rest of the time you can eat whatever you want within moderation. The book recently released in the US, was written by Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer. They claim this diet will make you lose weight faster than other standard diets - Mosley says he lost 20 pounds within a few weeks of starting the diet. This is how it works! First, let’s understand what happens to your body when you fast. When you don’t
eat, your body must turn somewhere else besides food for energy and begins to feed on the glucose in your blood. Once all of the glucose in your blood is eaten up, your body turns to the stored glucose - which is kept in complex carbohydrate molecules called glycogen. Finally, when all of that stored glucose is used up, your body taps into fat stores for energy and glucose. In fact, your body might go into starvation mode, where your metabolism actually slows down in response to a decrease in calorie intake. According to research, intermittent fasting improves learning and memory by stimulating new brain cells in the region of the brain responsible for memory, although no experiments have been performed on humans to test this theory. It all goes back to our hunter-gatherer days, when people would go for long periods of time without food. The theory is that our brains would have needed to be even sharper in order to find food during these periods of fasting. Studies have shown that intermittent fasting boosts the effectiveness of insulin to store glucose and breaks down fat, something called insulin sensitivity. “Increased insulin sensitivity will reduce your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline” writes Mosley. There are downsides to fasting, too. “Despite its increasing popularity, there is a great deal of uncertainty with significant gaps in the evidence” Britain’s health

agency, the National Health Service, wrote on its website after the book was published in January (“The FastDiet” hit US bookshelves in mid-March). I understand the above so how do I get started? We do not recommend starting this diet without the supervision of a doctor and before taking the necessary tests. Understand how to weigh yourself properly and then decide what days you are going to fast. Everyone on the diet will eat moderately and healthy for five days out of the week and limit calories for two of those days. Mosley decided to split his 600 calories between breakfast and dinner. Spencer chose to eat two meals with a few snacks in between. Decide what foods you’re going to eat. Choose foods that will keep you full, longer. Your aim is to have food that makes you feel satisfied but stays firmly within the 500-600 calorie allowance - the best option to achieve this are foods that are high in protein and low glycemic index. This includes foods like oatmeal, granola, nuts, seeds, beans, and eggs. Here is an example of a 500-calorie meal: Breakfast includes cottage cheese, a sliced pear, and a fresh fig. Dinner is salmon and tuna sashimi with soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger, and a tangerine. Breakfast is boiled eggs, asparagus spears, whole grain toast, and two plums. Dinner is Thai steak salad.

If only animals could talk, you’d be hearing their sad, pitiful stories. But since they can’t, we are giving these adorable creatures a voice. One way or another, they have been hurt and abused in ways you would not imagine a human doing to another creature, and yet the fact remains that these animals end up abandoned and left for dead all over the Kingdom. NO ONE KNOWS YOUR DRIVING PASSION LIKE ALLIED
Cars
The All-New Porsche Cayman Nick Cooksey test-drives the latest Cayman and Cayman S.
I
went to Dubai last month to test-drive Porsche’s third generation Cayman range. The Cayman was already a very good-looking car, and the latest model gets even better and is longer, wider, lighter, more efficient, and much more powerful. I hit the road and went all the way up to Fujeirah. The Cayman S is definitely more powerful than its smaller sibling with its 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-six cylinder engine offering an output of 325bhp which pushes the car from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 283 km/h. The Cayman features a 2.7-litre flat-six cylinder engine that pumps 275bhp, accelerating the car from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds reaching a top speed of 266 km/h. I also hit the tracks at The Dubai Autodrome. Driving on the race track gave me a chance to push this beautiful machine as hard as I could;
something I couldn’t do on the roads with the speed-cams monitoring me! I’m pleased to say the cay handled it perfectly in every way. I loved it! A feather touch on the accelerator and the car just zooms. The smooth turns at the curves with the windows rolled down, it gives
“A feather touch on the accelerator and the car just zooms.” you a high! The standard 18 and 19-inch Cayman wheels gives it not only a sportier appeal but also better balance and control – lateral stability and handling properties. Coming back to the car’s design, it’s marked by precise lines and sharp sculpted edges which emphasise it’s low, sleek, sexy, extended silhouette. The door mirrors are newly positioned near the top shoulder. Not to
forget the round front lights with four-point daytime running lights or position lights, an unmistakable identifying feature of the new Cayman. At the upper end of the rear window, a unique and distinctive LED brake light spans the entire window width warning the driver in the traffic behind that they are behind a Porsche Cayman! An optional Adaptive Cruise Control is also available. It is a system that controls the distance to the car ahead in traffic and vehicle speed. There’s a Burmester sound system that comes fitted and it sounds nearly as perfect as the engine. It must have been a tough job for the engineers at Porsche to be able to come up with such a major improvement to an already fantastic car, but somehow they managed it. The Cayman and Cayman S are priced at BD20,800 and BD23,500 respectively

Dodge Durango 2013
7-Seat Luxury, 7-Star Style
D
odge Durango is not your typical mid-sized SUV. This well rounded hunk of American muscle has every safety advantage possible. The most intriguing value is the wide range of options available. I ask Godwin D’cruz, Manager Sales & Marketing about his take on the Durango. He says, “Designed with an eye for detail and perfection, the Dodge Durango was built to break free from the crowd.” The SUV has met the challenges of evolution with grace and is beautifully thought out and well packaged. Let’s start with the engine. Both V6 and V8 engines are available. Personally, I would go for the V8 5.8 liter option. With this sturdy car, you can feel the difference instantly! Besides providing better acceleration, the V8 allows for better torque. With 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, backed by a mandatory five-speed automatic gear, this car is fully equipped. Offering good efficiency, the SUV sails smoothly on the highways and if you don’t know how to use the gears, you may have a little bit of a snag trying to merge onto a busy highway. Besides the engine this machine has intelligence including smooth 6-speed shifting, trip tronic gears,
responsive steering and reverse assistance through strategically placed cameras in the rear. It has won numerous awards and come out victorious with its safety features boasting wins with associations such as the American Automobile Association (AAA) and MotorWeek. The Durango’s optimal balance and four-wheel independent suspension adds to its overall value. The interior is a typical American car; great comfort, convenience and value for money. Whilst cruising, one can take in some fresh air through a fully automatic sunroof and lounge in the comfort of plush soft-touch material seats. If you prefer airconditioning, this car has the perfect system for you. If you love music as I do, you can enjoy a good sound quality. You can also view DVDs (but only while parked!). The Durango features more than 30 storage areas, and a rear cargo area that matches almost 85 cubic feet. In the Durango you won’t just like the comfort but you will also be

driving in top form as the new sleek design is no longer the look of the old Durango but a fresh, handsome and lustrous vehicle. The makers of the Dodge Durango made few compromises as it has been uniquely manufactured with all of the consumer’s needs in mind. The essential selling points are that it is physically powerful, very safe, clearly comfortable and decidedly original. You will no doubt enjoy stepping out in style in the new Dodge Durango 2013!

The Iconic Land Rover General Manager, Mr Anthony Raymond shares his goals for the brand in the kingdom.
H
ave you ever observed how a car enthusiast looks at cars or how he talks about them perhaps; it’s riveting isn’t it! Well, we know Anthony Raymond is passionate about all things cars from the way he speaks to us about his favourite Land Rover. “My favourite Land Rover would probably be the One Ten Defender,” he says, “one engine, forward-drive, simple technology, bullet-proof; classless! It’s been around since 1948 and is an obvious icon; every one from a school child to an old man would identify this car from far away!” He goes on to appreciate how the Land Rover has always had a policy to try and become better than what it already is instead of trying to become something else. “The features that I like about the newer Land Rovers is that they are designed for lesser CO2 emissions and that they offer a lot of new technology.” We ask him about his view on the kingdom’s automobile industry and he says that Bahrain like many other parts of the
world has suffered economic problems and consequently every single car manufacturer is ensuring that it can provide as many cars to the Middle East as possible, as other more established markets go down. “We intend to produce a brand-new standalone dealership in about 12 months,” says Anthony as he shares his goals as General Manager for Land Rover. The brand is currently under the umbrella of Euro Motors
he says that Land Rover will offer customers a more diversified range. “Hopefully we will provide not just more cars but more cars to a wider range of customers.” Anthony discusses the challenges that he and his team face. “Building a new project anywhere in the world is tough,” he says. “Introducing best business practices and integrating with local culture, generally speaking, is a challenge too. For instance, it’s a misconception that Middle Eastern customers expect poor service because that is what’s available in the Gulf. I believe that customers in this part of the world are demanding (which is a good thing!). Land Rover has a certain standard of service world-wide and we want the same for Bahrain.” This is Anthony’s second stint in the kingdom and he believes in approaching customer concerns like they are his own. “At least once a day I pretend like I don’t work for the firm and try and see things from a customer’s perspective; it’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned in my career.”
“Hopefully we will provide not just more cars but more cars to a wider range of customers.” but they will now have separate GMs, Financial Controllers and Offices. “We’re working towards setting-up 36 work bays, a 2-storey showroom and facility and an improved range of customer-care services. A lot of people don’t speak well of car-care service in the kingdom, especially after the warranty period. We want to be one of the nicest places you’ve ever serviced your car at!” Sharing his plans for the next five years

Strawberry - Lemon Popsicle

Summer Coolers Strawberry Lemon Popsicle
S
ummers in Bahrain have been playing peek-aboo this year but I don’t suppose anybody is complaining. The light, summery gale with cloudy skies on certain days and gleeful sun shining down on certain others keep me chirpy. To me, summers mean plenty of salads with mint-yogurt dressing, lots of fresh juices and refreshing frozen yogurt. Lately, plenty of popsicle and rejuvenating cooler recipe ideas have been doing rounds on the blogosphere and I can’t help but get inspired. Striking combinations of fresh citrus fruits and berries are the colours that I usually go for. Not only do they look stunning in their pinks, purples and oranges, it is an instant hit with family and friends. I also insist this is the best way to ensure that children have their fill of fruit that they refuse to eat otherwise. Sugar can be easily substituted with honey or agave nectar to make it healthier and more satisfying. For this issue I have two special and easy recipes to share that include a Strawberry – Lemon Popsicle and a Watermelon-mint-rose cooler.
Makes 8 popsicles
Ingredients Fresh strawberries 250 - 300 gms, chopped Lemon juice/Lime juice - 4 tbsp Sugar - 1/2 to 1/4 th cup or honey/agave nectar as per taste Water - 1/4th cup Preparation Wash and chop the fresh strawberries and keep aside. In a blender put all the ingredients - Strawberries, sugar, water and lemon juice/lime juice. Blend well. Pour them in Popsicle moulds and freeze overnight or atleast for 4 hours to set. Enjoy!
Watermelon-Mint -Rose Cooler Makes 2 glasses
Anita
Preparation Blend watermelon with mint leaves and keep aside. Alternately, blend only the watermelon and add chopped mint leaves to it. Pour rose syrup into glasses, some lemon juice and the watermelon - mint juice. Top it with watermelon balls and crushed ice. Garnish it with a sprig of mint and a slice of watermelon. Simply refreshing! These juices and popsicles would help cool you down and enjoy summer for all the colourful bounty it has to offer. Anita is a food blogger who loves to experiment by trying out new cuisines, recipes and ingredients or simply recreating the old recipes by giving her special touch. She is also a co-contributor to the island’s only memoir of its kind – My Beautiful Bahrain. In the memoir, Anita talks about the variety of food options in Bahrain, which according to her is a “culinary oasis’’. She writes regularly on restaurants in Bahrain and is a regular contributor to many publication in GCC. Anita blogs at www.sliceofmylyfe.wordpress.com
Ingredients Watermelon - 2 cups, chopped Mint leaves - few sprigs (use sparingly) Rose syrup - 2-3 tbsp or as per taste Lemon juice - 2 tbsp

Things to know Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!
Al Dana Nursery Tel. 1725 3541 Dana Pre-school, Riffa Tel. 1777 0180 Lilliput, Budaiya Tel. 1769 4947
Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.
Avoiding Offence
Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.

Quote Unquote Not all are destined for greatness; some are destined but only to inspire the great. Practicality isn’t always the wisest choice... sometimes stupidity is the best option we have! Commitment is respecting one’s own decisions not because there never was a moment of doubt but because there was that moment of surety. Word of the Month Haberdashery Pronounciation: HAB-er-dash-uh-ree Word Type: Noun Meaning: 1. A retail shop dealing in men’s furnishings, as shirts, ties, gloves, socks, and hats 2. The goods sold there This word comes to English possibly from the Anglo-Norman ‘hapertas’ meaning “small ware,” though the origin is unknown. Haberdashery first entered English in the early 1400s, though the term for the proprietor of this kind of shop or these kinds of goods, a haberdasher predates haberdashery by 100 years.

Blog Feature hing painful and et m so to on g in ld ho u Are yo to finally let go! s y a w w fe a re a stressful? Here
Practice Happiness Give up the need to always be right
There are many people who cannot stand the idea of being wrong. The urge of always wanting to be right even if it means risking relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain for us and for others. It’s not worth it. Whenever you feel the need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this: “Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind? What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big?” - Dr Wayne Dyer
Give up your need for control
Let go of the need to always be in control. It is always best to let everything and everyone be. Once you practice that, you will start to notice that you feel much better without the world on your shoulder.
Give up on blame and negativity
We live in a culture of blame. But that is not how it is supposed to be. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Also, being negative will only hurt you. You are better than that. Your mind is an admirable instrument if used rightly. Stop blaming and being negative and start taking responsibility for your life.
128 | Bahrain Confidential | May 2013
Give up your limiting beliefs.
“Belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind”- Elly Roselle Nothing is impossible. Make a decision; you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs hold you back. Spread your wings and fly!
“Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind? What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big?” - Dr Wayne Dyer Give up the need to impress others
Trying hard to be something you are not just to make others like you, is not the ideal way to live a life. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something you are not, the moment you take of your masks and embrace the real you, you will notice people being drawn to you, effortlessly.
Give up your resistance to change
Change is good. Change helps you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change, and don’t resist it.
Give up the past
Some people say the past is what defines you. Especially when the past looks so much better than the present and the future looks so frightening. But, you have to take into consideration the fact that the present moment is all you will ever have. Stop deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all, life is a journey not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future, prepare yourself, but always be present in the “NOW”.
Give up on attachment
This concept for most of us is hard to grasp, but it’s not impossible. You get better at it with time and practice. The moment you detach yourself from all things that are irrelevant, you become peaceful, tolerant, kind, and serene. You will find a place where you will be able to understand all things without even trying
