It’s that time of the year again, when all the travellers return to the island and we welcome even more people who are moving here. Obviously, there’s loads happening and September is a hopping month indeed, as we all try to recover from the scorching heat! Our fashion pages have something for everyone, from classic casual wear to modern maternity clothes for mums to be. We have even got your toddlers covered, with some great clothes from Mamas & Papas. Our fashion pages also contain a rare look behind the scenes at the Saks Fifth Avenue fashion campaign shoot in Dubai. Our fitness guru, Roberta Trzebinski talks about the importance of breathing and how correct breathing helps us stay healthier and our lungs perform better for longer. While Kelly Armatage focuses on the importance of positive thoughts to attract abundance in life. The newly opened Animal Care Clinic in Hamala deserve a shout out, as they are doing some great work. Read through for the great services offered by their dedicated and professional staff. The island is hopping with great events this month - and we have put together a whole three pages of fun, entertainment and parties that you do not want to miss. Flip through for details on all these exciting events. And, we have put together great pictures from all the society events, make sure you look for yourself and your friends in there. You never know who you’ll spot! If you’re looking to adopt a loving pet into your home, steer clear of pet stores and adopt a rescued pet instead. Flip through to see pictures of adorable cats and dogs up for adoption at Tony the Dogfather and the BSPCA. And the popular BSPCA fashion show is back by demand, we have details on that and where you can reserve your spot! We feature a mosaic artist this month, who can bring any space to life by adding beautiful and colourful mosaic to the furniture and walls. And, as always, turn to our car pages for the latest and greatest deals on your favourite car or motorcycle.

Readers’ Letters
Dear Editor ... Many thanks to all of you who wrote in last month and apologies if your letter isn’t printed but we get so many. Keep us informed and keep us in check by sending comments to info@ArabianMagazines.com A Bad Taste Of Fashion
Those who organised the Taste of Fashion event featured in your magazine last month must have no sense of fashion at all. They made those four women look terrible!!! (I want to use other, more descriptive, words here ... ) The poor girls, they looked so much better in their ordinary clothes and makeup. I bet I could do a better job at making someone over! Fashion Police Fashion Police you call yourself, eh? Quite a name there ... for someone who has no taste for fashion! We think those women looked fab and they said they loved it too. So Ssshhhh up ... and we think you’re just jealous you didn’t get to be part of the makeover!
Braving Dust Storms
Your environment writer, Rehan, gave quite a huge lecture in his article on how to brave dust storms etc etc etc ... I have only recently moved to this region and dust storms are new to me. But, I must say, they can be quite fun and not as scary as he made them out to be!?! I have camped out in dust storms here and it’s so nice since no one else is around. All I got was a sore throat and a nose bleed ... I didn’t like die or anything. Adventurous Joe We find it quite amusing - and also, sort of disturbing - that you would discard the sound advice of an expert and just go on out there knowing it ain’t good for you. We can tell you one thing buddy, you are definitely on the fast track in life ... but maybe on the wrong side of the road!
There Are No Ugly Dogs!
In your magazine, I saw the Bizarre News section this month (I love going through it each month) and, although, it’s usually very interesting, this time I was quite upset with you guys! I am a dog lover and I can tell you with full and final authority that there are no ugly dogs in this world. All the dogs are beautiful, adorable and loving. I detest the fact that there are actual contests to judge dogs’ ‘ugliness’ - how blind these people must be! Heart Broken
Oh grow up, cry baby! There’s lots in this world that one can be upset over. At least Mugly got a thousand dollars and a year’s worth of dog biscuits no matter why. There are so many homeless dogs and cats around here in Bahrain, living in terrible conditions. Maybe you should spend less time writing letters and more time volunteering at the animal rescue centres!

Moving Forward Indeed Enjoyed reading John Ridley’s feature on reconciliation and how the country’s youth are making an effort to come together and bridge the divide. Even though I’m not Bahraini, I have enjoyed the amazing hospitality and love of the people here for many years. But we all know, things haven’t been the same since the unrest started. Let’s all hope and pray that things get better soon! Optimistic Expat

We are glad you enjoyed John’s article. This is not something we can make light of. Yes, don’t we all long for the Bahrain of old days and wish we could just turn around and be back in time when everything was perfect.
Snoozing Off ...
I’m starved, I’m snoozing off ... as I turn the pages, my brain stops functioning and the words start swimming before my eyes ... it’s a nightmare that Bahrain Confidential has started doing less of fashion and more of ‘serious stuff’. But only it’s real. What happened to my favourite magazine? Pleeeease guys, I am fashion starved and would love to see more and more fashion pages for men and women. Bring them back! And while you are at it ... more shopping news too please. Starved for Fashion We hear you ... we hear you. And we do hope you enjoy this month’s fashion pages as we have made quite an effort to put those together for our adorable readers like you! Don’t forget to write to us about it.

Russell Brand Silenced: Katy Perry Gag Order
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston Engaged
Jennifer Aniston is engaged to her boyfriend of more than a year, Justin Theroux. Theroux, 41, and Aniston, 43, have known each other for years, but started dating more than a year ago after working on the comedy “Wanderlust.” Aniston was previously married to Brad Pitt for five years until 2005. Pitt since moved on to a long-term relationship with Angelina Jolie, while Aniston has had high-profile relationships with John Mayer and Vince Vaughn. This will be actor and screenwriter Theroux’s first marriage. It’s not clear if a wedding date for the couple has been set.
Katy Perry has reportedly instructed her lawyers to gag Russell Brand from making any more comments about their time together. The outspoken funnyman made a series of jokes about his time with his ex-wife during an interview with shock-jock Howard Stern last month. Perry is said to have been furious the interview and wants to make sure there are no more intimate details released in public. Even though it’s mainly harmless and often even complimentary, she’s “sick to death of his comments being splashed all over the news and magazines.” Sources say Katy went berserk after the interview with Howard Stern before calling in lawyers to put a gagging order on Russell to prevent him from speaking to her in public again. Katy vowed never to reveal the ins and outs of their marriage break down or speak about Russell in any way. All she wants is the same in return. It’s been suggested that the pair agreed to keep a dignified silence on their time together after signing a quickie divorce in January.

John Cleese (72) may have three failed marriages behind him, but it’s not putting him off searching for the right person. Despite his last divorce from American psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger costing him more than EUR12 million, he has taken another trip down the aisle on the Caribbean island of Mustique with girlfriend Jennifer Wade, 31 years his junior. He has said that his past experiences have never put him off the notion of marriage – “I never felt there was anything wrong with the institution of marriage – the only thing wrong was my ability to choose the right person … I couldn’t imagine being with anyone other than Jenny now.” The new Mrs Cleese, who has been married before, said the age gap ‘never bothers’ the couple, adding: ‘We’re kindred spirits. When people see us together, they immediately get it.’

Elton Madonna Feud Heightens
Sir Elton John has slammed Madonna, saying she resembles a “f*****g fairground stripper.” He criticised the 53-year-old singer claiming she was “horrible” to Lady Gaga - who is godmother to Elton and his husband David Furnish’s 19-month-old son Zachary. Adding to the drama, he said that Madonna has no right to criticise other artists because her “career is over” and her recent MDNA tour has been a flop. “Why is she such a nightmare? Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger ****” he said to an Australian news and current affairs program. He even went on to provide some career advice, “If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like Ray of Light and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly.”

Six Hours Of Pride, Passion
And Performance
An Interview with BIC Chief Executive, Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa
Bahrain International Circuit is hosting a six-hour endurance race this month, as part of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship.
T
he Kingdom’s event, known as The Six Hours of Bahrain, will be the WEC’s only race held in the Middle East. Maliha Aqueel speaks to BIC Chief Executive, Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa about what the race means for Bahrain.
Why do you think Bahrain International Circuit has been chosen as the only venue in the Middle East for the WEC? We have modern, state-of-the-art facilities; a dedicated staff; and an impressive track record that anybody would be proud of. To add to that, our people are some of the most welcoming in the world, and that signature Bahraini hospitality is something that people never forget.
BIC Chief Executive, Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa
“For Bahraini motorsport, this is a great addition to the Kingdom’s portfolio of hosting world-class events.” What does this race represent to you and what does it mean for motorsports in Bahrain? To me, personally, the race means a lot. I hope that one day we can enjoy a motorsport history as rich as those in continents such as Europe or America. Hosting the WEC is a valuable step towards that, simply because of its association with one of the world’s legendary races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For Bahraini motorsport, this is a great addition to the Kingdom’s portfolio of hosting world-class events. How are you and your staff preparing for the Endurance Race in September? Over the past few months, all our departments at the circuit have been working hard to ensure that we have a very successful event. This work load is set to double as the event nears, but we’re ready for it. What can spectators expect from the Endurance Race - is it like the Formula One weekend? Yes, like the F1 weekend, spectators can expect plenty of entertainment both on and off the track as this is truly one of our mega events of the year. There’s going to be a massive grid of over 32 race cars, and teams will require more than one driver to take turns behind the wheel. The transition from one driver to another has to be fluid so as not to cost any valuable seconds. There will be lots of attractions for fans off the track. We will also have an open
paddock, which gives spectators a chance to get up close and personal with the teams and possibly even interact with the drivers. How do you think the Endurance Race in Bahrain will help the local economy? The Six Hours of Bahrain bring into the country thousands of visitors, some of whom are associated with the championship, and tourists coming in from across the region and beyond. All of them will need a place to stay, food to eat, find a means of transportation, and take up activities to keep them entertained during their free time. That means they will be spending their money here in Bahrain, and benefitting local businesses. What is your overall future vision for the BIC? Our main goal right now is for BIC to be one of the most wide-ranging tracks in the world. We hope to be able to offer every kind of motor racing experience, be it circuit racing, karting, or drag racing. We hope to make motorsport more available to the masses. An example of this is getting more children involved in karting. Also, we want to maintain our position at the front of the pack and to be the standard everyone compares to. We also want BIC to be the starting point for national and regional championships, ones that are professionally run and that we can be proud of. This can only help the sport grow in the region, and once that happens, you will be able to see BIC at the centre of it all

d n a l s I e h T n O t h g i N t s e B e h T r e v E s ’ A C P S The B n o i h s a F r a l u p o P Show Is Back! More than ‘just a Fashion Show,’ but a night full of frolics and fun, this promises to be one of the best nights out on the Island!
T
he BSPCA’s biggest and most popular fund raiser is back on 11th October. It will be designed, choreographed and produced by the multi-talented Stephen Herschel who always goes ‘head over heels’ for the BSPCA and will, no doubt, do so again this time. All outfits will be sourced from the BSPCA shop to give you a bit of inspiration. The event has never been ‘just a Fashion Show,’ but a night full of frolics and fun, and this one promises to be the same! It will feature the pupils of Victoria’s School of Dance, gifted soloist Anna Thompson-Hall, El Yown Dancers, talented musicians David and Sachi and of course, Stephen’s wonderful team of models and back stage hands, all gladly volunteering their time and talent for their ‘pet’ charity.
This year’s theme will be ‘The BSPCA Academy Awards’ and, in keeping with this glitzy “red carpet” occasion, the dress code for the event will be ‘dress to impress’ as the venue is the fabulouslyrenovated Al Fanar rooftop restaurant at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel. A lavish buffet, including beverages, will be served before “your night at the Oscars” begins. There are only 200 places available, so put the date in your diary now and secure your tickets before they sell out! There will be wonderful raffle prizes on offer, including: a night in a luxury room for two people at the Sofitel Hotel, beautiful designer watches donated by Fakhrawi Stores, an air ticket to Dubai, a four ball and 18 hole golf voucher from the Royal Golf Club at Riffa, a dragster racing experience from BIC and lots more! You will even have the chance to bid for a framed polo shirt signed by the winning Bahrain Formula One Red Bullteam Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
2012 has been a year of great celebration for the BSPCA, which is now in its 33rd year of existence. After more than 10 years of concentrated fund raising for a new animal shelter, they are finally moving to the purpose-built Animal Welfare Centre at Askar. September sees the team embarking on the nationwide humane programme to deal with the stray dog population of Bahrain. All money raised from the Fashion Show will go towards funding a second team of personnel out on the road to carry out the trapping operation to help ensure a speedy success. The Show will celebrate these achievements and, by purchasing a ticket, you will not only enjoy a wonderful evening but also help the Society to solve Bahrain’s major animal problem in a humane and caring manner. What could be better, a great night out and an even greater cause benefitting from your support of it. For every table of 12 tickets sold, the BSPCA will be able to afford to neuter 72 dogs
Tickets go on sale from 1st September and will be available from the Thrift Shop, Tel. +973 1759 3479.

Sheer Luxury
Timeless Luxury
By Cartier
Crafted in the great jewellery tradition of the Maison, each of these pieces required up to two years of work, calling on Cartier’s full range of expertise, including the artistic crafts of engraving and stone carving. It’s an unprecedented demonstration of inventive high jewellery displaying great technical prowess and pushing back the frontiers of style through its mastery of a three-dimensional menagerie in which a panther playfully graces a ring or through its expression of an Arctic spring evoked by a briolette-cut aquamarine frosted with icy diamonds.

Faiza Saeed
Piecing It All Together
Faiza Saeed is the first Mosaic artist in Bahrain. She is mostly inspired by her brother the Bahraini artist, Abdulhameed Saeed. As a child she was exposed to his surreal paintings that went on to influence her work. Faiza’s love for Mosaics started from the moment she laid 34 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2012
eyes on them when visiting museums in Britain, Italy, and Spain. She then went on to meet legendary British Mosaic
artist Emma Biggs, and took lessons on designing and experimenting with the medium from her London studio. Faiza also conducts Mosaic workshops in Bahrain. Read on for Faiza’s chat with Bahrain Confidential about her work.
Art Space
Why Mosaics? Mosaic, for me, is an art that you can learn even if you’re not gifted! It allows me to show all my creativity without any restrictions. Mosaic has a contemporary touch to it, that’s why you can put it anywhere you want, whether it’s in an office or at home, it will always look beautiful. When did you start making Mosaic art? I started in 2008, four years ago … Do you still have your first ever piece? Yes it is very ugly and messy with lots of flaws, but I am proud of it because it was my first piece! Now, I share this piece with my students at my workshop to give them hope and encourage them. Remember you can always improve yourself with practice! When was the first time you fell in love with Mosaic art and what inspired you? When I first visited the modern art museum in the UK, the TATE Modern Museum off Southbank and checking out the underground station, Tottenham was also amazing. Where and when did you learn to do this professionally? I have attended several workshops in London, Turkey and Italy. My first workshop was with artist Emma Biggs from the UK in 2009. In 2012, I went to a professional workshop at the Ravenna Mosaic School in Italy with the Mosaic artist Luchiana Notturni. What kind of Mosaic work do you do furniture, wall installation, art pieces? I do everything, I believe that we can use Mosaic art everywhere whether it’s on the floors or as furniture or even as illustrations. I design tables, chairs, coffee tables, do wall pieces, and also work with existing furniture from home owners and create Mosaic on them.
Faiza instructing a student during her Mosaic workshop
“Mosaic has a contemporary touch to it, that’s why you can put it anywhere you want, whether it’s in an office or at home, it will always look beautiful.” What have been some of the best moments in your career as an artist? My first favourite moment was buying my first DIY Mosaic book, creating and designing my first piece and having it not fall apart. Conducting my first workshop in London, and being with women who also appreciated this craft was also a great moment, and selling four of my tables at my first solo exhibition was also a confidence boost.

What have been some of the most humbling moments in your career? The most humbling moment in my career was when I got my students’ testimonials from the Al Riwaq workshop that I conducted earlier in the year which you can now see on the my website. They are so humbling

What kind of Mosaic work do you like doing most? Mixing materials like Mosaic with wood! Especially when I do tables and some other furniture. I work with ceramic, found objects and collect Mosaic from my trips. I ask my children to source Mosaic pieces for me when they are travelling as well. The first exhibition at Al an Artspace is to feature three Saudi Arabian female artists - including new commissions by emerging mixed-media artists Sarah Abu Abdallah and Sarah Mohanna Al-Abdali and a special loan by one of Saudi Arabia’s leading artists Manal Al Dowayan. While varied in their style and methodologies, the works employ a nuanced and at times humorous approach towards exploring the position of women within contemporary society, forgoing militant tactics for those of solidarity, ambiguity and irony. Swimming Pool Safety Swimming is a lot of fun, but drowning is a real danger. Even kids who know how to swim can drown, so it’s very important to have adequate safety around the pool. Pool Safety Middle East has just the right solutions to help make your pool safer.
T
he facts and figures are heart wrenching. Each year, hundreds of children under five drown in residential swimming pools, usually a pool owned by their family. In addition, many children in that age group are treated in hospital emergency rooms for submersion injures. At the time of the incidents, most victims are being supervised by one or both parents. Pool submersions involving children happen quickly. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone. Toddlers, in particular, often do something unexpected because their capabilities change daily.
54 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2012
Safety Precautions You Can Take
Parents who own pools can take their own precautions to reduce the chances of their youngsters accessing the family pool without adult supervision. Pool Safety Middle East has some of the most highly recommended and effective solutions available.
Safety Fences
Pool safety fences are the most widespread method for the prevention of drowning accidents to children in the 1-6 years ‘high risk’ age group. A pool safety fence provides a safe, secure barrier all the time. A fence is also the most affordable type of safety barrier.
Safety Covers
A pool safety cover is a safe barrier to help prevent young children and pets from falling into the swimming pool. At the same time it serves as a protective cover for the pool preventing debris from collecting at the bottom. With a safety cover, Pool Safety ME pays special attention to closing off the gaps around any stainless steel ladders which go into the pool.
Safety Nets
A pool safety net consists of an especially manufactured net, and the final shape is customized on-site to match the outlines of the swimming pool. The mesh squares are uniquely sized so that they are too small for a child’s head to squeeze through, and too large for a child to walk on or play on Contact Pool Safety Middle East to find out which solution works out best for you. L
ast month, I was invited to join the Saks Fifth Avenue’s fashion team in Dubai to go behind the scenes and watch the making of their Autumn/Winter fashion campaign ‘Progression’. Even though at Arabian Magazines we have our own photography studio and have done numerous fashion shoots, working with many fabulous photographers, I found it fascinating to watch an advertising campaign being created for such a well known brand. The show was directed by a team of internationally acclaimed fashion professionals from New York, and featured model Jayne Moore from UK modeling agency IMG.

The shoot went really smoothly, a testament to the high level organisation and team spirit. Completed in under six hours, there were no tears or tantrums - from either the model or creative director! Being so involved in the process, I was really able to get a feel for the inspiration behind the campaign. I began to appreciate the team’s vision and exactly why were using the specific outfits and props throughout the shoot.

The campaign focuses on the thought process behind making a purchase. It encourages the idea that whatever you buy needs to make an impression and fulfill a purpose – whether that be looking professional for a work function, or making an ex realise exactly what he missed by letting you go!

Taking inspiration from the interconnectedness apparent in works of art such as the Atomium Monument in Brussels and with a focus on spherical interpretations like those exhibited by Damien Hirst, the Sak’s Autumn campaign is called Shop Saks and as deep and thought provoking as it is beautiful. Have another look at the Saks Fifth Avenue advert in the front of the magazine. I know that I have certainly been looking at advertising campaigns differently recently! Health Updates Physically Fit Boys And Girls Score Higher On Reading And Math
Having a healthy heart and lungs may be one of the most important factors for middle school students to make good grades in math and reading, according to findings presented at the American Psychological Association’s 120th Annual Convention. The researchers gathered data at five Texas middle schools from 1,211 students, of whom 54 per cent were female with an average age of about twelve. Overall, the group was 57 per cent white. While previous studies have found links between being physically fit and improved academic performance, this study also examined several other potential influences, including self-esteem and social support. It also took into account the students’ socioeconomic status and their self-reported academic ability. In addition to cardio respiratory fitness, social support was related to better reading scores among boys, according to the study. It defined social support as reliable help from family and friends to solve problems or deal with emotions. For girls, having a larger body mass index was the only factor other than cardio respiratory fitness that predicted better reading scores. For boys and girls, cardio respiratory fitness was the only factor related to their performance on the math tests.

Egg Allergy In Kids Overcome With Egg Therapy New research from the United States finds that egg therapy, eating small but gradually increasing daily doses of egg white powder, may help affected children overcome their allergy to eggs. However, the researchers urge people not try it at home because the conditions have to be carefully controlled by a trained doctor. In the small trial, 75 per cent of 40 children who received a daily, gradually increasing dose of egg white powder, were symptom-free after nearly two years while they were on the treatment, and 27 per cent of them remained symptom-free after another year with no treatment during which they ate as much egg and products containing egg as they wanted to.
Health Raisins As Good As Sports Chews For Workout Boost Eating raisins could provide the same workout boost as sports chews, according to an article in the Journal of The International Society of Sports Nutrition. Researchers from California-Davis University discovered that raisins are a cheap, natural source that provide an alternative to energy bars. In order to evaluate the impact of natural supplements compared with carbohydrate supplements on endurance running performance, the researchers performed three randomized trials on runners, with a seven-day break between trials. The participants were assigned to consume raisins, chews or water as a supplement. The results revealed that those who consumed raisins or sports chews were on average one minute faster in the five kilometre run compared with those who drank just water. Researchers also found that raisins and sports chews promoted higher carbohydrate oxidation than water.
Social Connection More Important To Adult Well-Being Than Academic Ability Positive social relationships in childhood and adolescence are key to adult well-being, according to Associate Professor Craig Olsson from Deakin University and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia, and his colleagues. In contrast, academic achievement appears to have little effect on adult well-being. Olsson and team analysed data for 804 people followed up for 32 years, who participated in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study (DMHDS) in New Zealand. They explored the relative importance of early academic and social pathways to adult well-being. The researchers found, on the one hand, a strong pathway from child and adolescent social connectedness to adult wellbeing. This illustrates the enduring significance of positive social relationships over the lifespan to adulthood. On the other hand, the pathway from early language development, through adolescent academic achievement, to adult well-being was weak, which is in line with existing research showing a lack of association between socioeconomic prosperity and happiness.
Jet Device Injects Drugs Without Needles The prospect of less painful medicine shots without needles has come a step closer, as US researchers revealed how they have developed a device that delivers a controlled, tiny, high-pressure jet into the skin without using a hypodermic needle. While there are already several jet-devices on the market, they tend to be of an “all or nothing” design that delivers the same amount of drug to the same depth each time. However the new jet-injection device that researchers at MIT have engineered can be programmed to deliver medicine into the skin in a range of doses to variable depths in a controlled manner.
Increased Asthma Risk For Infants Exposed To Specific Moulds Cincinnati-based researchers now report new evidence that exposure to three types of mould during infancy may have a direct link to asthma development during childhood. These forms of mould - Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus unguis and Penicillium variabile - are typically found growing in water-damaged homes, putting a spotlight on the importance of mould remediation for public health. All infants enrolled in the study were born to at least one parent with allergies. They found that 25 per cent of children whose parents had allergies were asthmatic by age seven. Among the multiple indoor contaminants assessed, only mould exposure during infancy emerged as a risk factor for asthma at age seven.
Caffeine Intake Tied To Lower Risk Of Skin Cancer A new US study of over 110,000 people found that the more caffeine there was in their diets, the lower their risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer. The researchers wrote about their findings in the journal ‘Cancer Research’. The finding adds Basal Cell Carcinoma to a growing list of diseases that increasing coffee intake appears to lower the risk of, such as type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Basal Cell Carcinoma starts in the top layer of the skin, the epidermis and usually results from regular exposure to sunlight or other ultraviolet radiation. Even though it is a slow-growing cancer and is not life-threatening like melanoma, it causes considerable morbidity. Of the participants, just over 22,700 developed Basal Cell Carcinoma over 20 years of follow up. When ranked according to caffeine consumption, the study found for women, the top 20 per cent of caffeine consumers had an 18 per cent lower risk of BCC than the bottom 20 per cent. For men, the risk was lower by 13 per cent.

H
ow many promises have you made yourself in recent years to get fit? Whether it’s yet another New Year’s resolution, the shock of your jeans not fitting or you’ve been left feeling like a beached whale recently as a good looking chap with a six pack struts past and actually looks good in a pair of Speedo’s – something your wife thinks too, if her drooling has anything to go by!
psychological well-being, reduces the risk of developing breast cancer and colon cancer, relieves insomnia, helps prevent diabetes, reduces high cholesterol or the risk of developing it. And these are just some of the pay-offs you’d expect from getting fitter.

Yet you just can’t find the motivation, time or right type of training program to suit you. Rubbish! If we lost weight for every excuse we came up with – we’d be the skinniest nation in the world as opposed to one of the fattest and unhealthiest. Next time you’re about to make up another excuse on why you can’t exercise just read below to give you some motivation … Medical experts agree that achieving and keeping any level of physical fitness fends off heart disease and related illnesses. In layman’s terms it helps you achieve slimmer thighs, firmer muscles, more energy, relieves tension and stress, as well as depression and anxiety, boosts selfimage and improves
Extreme Fitness, known as Exfit, and located in Barbar welcomes any person – male or female whatever their shape, weight, fitness level or ability is. The only requirement they ask from you – you have to want to change! Ahmad, head instructor and Osama, second trainer knows this system works because according to them they were a massive family up until five years ago
Health & Fitness when Ahmad had had enough. Looking at them now it’s very difficult to believe that any of them ever had a weight problem. The system was developed in USA and focuses on core strength and conditioning and is used at gyms throughout the world. The program incorporates cardio, stamina, flexibility, power, speed and coordination. It’s tough, you are pushed to your maximum but the results are so worth it. Not one session is ever repeated therefore it is impossible to get bored. Think boot camp at its meanest. There have been times when I have wanted to strangle Ahmad with my skipping rope as he shouts for the fifth time that I’m being too lazy. But he knows just how far to push you and every time I’ve skipped out feeling amazing and looking forward to the next session. There is nothing fancy about the gym as you are there to work. But there the added benefits of sauna, steam and pool once you’ve picked yourself up from the floor after a session and crawled to it. But what really makes this gym the ultimate work out as far as I’m concerned – not only are you pushed to your maximum which has actually given me a more positive approach to everyday problems, it’s the camaraderie which comes with your fellow trainers. Everyone supports you, no one is there to judge you and it’s a mish mash of ages and shapes.
“It has given me a more positive approach to everyday problems.” We all just want to train, get fit and enjoy it in the process. But be prepared to sweat! To try out a free session Tel. +973 3953 3130. or email: exfit@live.com

PRP Hair Treatment is the newest hair loss treatment, pioneered by Dr Pierre R Clero. He is Asia’s first and most experienced cosmetic PRP provider and a world renowned pioneer in autologous cellular regeneration medicine. “We have a greater than 80 per cent success rate based on patient satisfaction and clinical outcome.”

PRP Hair Treatment

A
fter a small amount of blood is taken from the patient to produce the hair follicle stimulating platelet rich plasma (PRP), the scalp is prepared with thorough cleansing. Calcium-activated Stem-Cell - PRP is then injected via syringe. The treatment is done without anesthesia, therefore there is the potential for some discomfort during the procedure. This is minimised with the use of freezing shots (nerve blocks) and most patients report minor to no discomfort. There is no down time associated with the treatment and normal activity can be resumed immediately. After treatment, the scalp should be protected from the sun and excessive irritation. Can anyone have this procedure? PRP Hair Treatment is a safe choice for patients with hair loss. However, patients with active infection on the scalp, history of shingles on the scalp, diabetes, coagulation disease, or those taking blood thinning and/or immunosuppressive medications are not right candidates. If hair follicles are entirely lost, the treatment will not work. Patients who have lost their hair follicles require hair transplant surgery.
Dr Pierre R Clero
How many treatments do I need? Initially, one to two treatments three to six months apart are recommended for rapid re-growth. For some patients, maintenance treatment may become necessary every year or so. What is the success rate? Although results vary between patients, we have a greater than 80 per cent success rate based on patient satisfaction and clinical outcome Dr Pierre R Clero is based at Bahrain Specialist Hospital. Breath:
Our First Healer Our Fitness Guru, Roberta Trzebinski, talks about the importance of better breathing techniques and how it helps our lungs stay healthier for longer.
A
re your lungs dying? I bet your doctor never told you this but as we age, the cells in our lungs start to die off faster than we replace them – causing our lungs to shrink. If we don’t do anything about it, by the age of 70, 45 per cent of our lungs’ capacity would have gone. That’s bad news for our strength, stamina and disease-fighting
whole area of your lungs, visualize it rippling down and filling up the bottom of the ribs like a balloon, concentrating not only in the anterior parts but also the sides and the posterior aspects. Feel the ribs expanding in three dimensions as your breath becomes fuller, but try to avoid lifting the shoulders and tensing your neck. Was it easy? What did you experience? Some of you may have found it challenging and even got light headed in the process perhaps? This may indicate that you are not breathing to your full lung
“Breathing correctly can help us fight fatigue, stress and muscular tension. It helps our circulatory system, our cardio vascular system and even our central nervous system.”
power. That’s why, there is no better medicine for us than fresh oxygen. Spare a few moments as you read this article. Just pause and reflect on how you are breathing - try to identify if it is a smooth, full, relaxed breathing pattern or an irregular, shallow and agitated pattern. Try, in your mind’s eye, to channel the breath into the
80 | Bahrain Confidential | September 2012
capacity and it is perfectly normal to feel new sensations as you begin to breathe deeper, into the underused parts of the lower alveoli of the lungs. In these regions, stagnant air and toxins await and multiply and if we do not breathe correctly they fester in our bodies. Breathing polluted air and smoking does not help, but
Roberta Trzebinski
becoming aware of oxygenating our bodies through deeper breathing is a beginning in this purification process. Imagine a river and a pond. Which one would you associate your breathing pattern with? A pond’s water is shallow, full of aquatic plants and marsh. It lacks wave action which is symbolic of stillness and lack of vitality. In a river, the water is clear, forever moving, changing and symbolizing energy. Feeling lethargic and lacking vitality signifies poor oxygenation in our body and mind. On average we breathe more than 20,000 times a day, every day – but we pay no attention to it. Breathing correctly can help us fight fatigue, stress and muscular tension. It helps our circulatory system, our cardio vascular system and even our central nervous system, as with better breathing we relax and concentrate better. When our lung volume drops, our oxygen reduces, our mind becomes foggy, and our energy dries up. Simple tasks like going up the stairs can leave us breathless. If you only exercise within your current aerobic limits your aerobic capacity is never going to improve. Long, slow cardio training is not going to give us a reserve capacity of oxygen which we need at times of stress or higher exertion. Working out for shorter periods at a higher intensity with periods of rest will help us restore and increase our reserve capacity for the health of our lungs, heart and blood vessels
Roberta Trzebinski is a certified Stott Pilates Instructor Trainer and runs Breathing Workshops as well as High Intensity Interval Training Classes. For more information, Tel. +973 3944 5816 or visit www.pilatesbahrain.webeden.co.uk

Attracting Abundance
Kelly Armatage, our resident Counsellor, Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist talks about positive and abundant thoughts and their impact on our lives.
H
ow would it feel to have abundance in all areas of your life? Abundance in the form of unlimited amounts of love, success, wealth, health and self expression. Yet, many are lacking in some of these areas, due to a lack in their thoughts or beliefs towards these
“I do not deserve a loving and fulfilling relationship” “Great success tends to happen to others and not me” “I am unlikely to be promoted and get a higher salary” “If there is a virus going around, I’ll be sure to catch it” Having these types of thoughts in our conscious or subconscious mind ensures
“By increasing the energy, vibration and positivity within our thoughts, our realities change around us.”
Kelly Armatage
increasing the energy, vibration and positivity within our thoughts, our realities change around us. Let’s take for example Steven Spielberg’s rise to fame. Despite suffering from dyslexia and starting out his career at Universal Studios as an unpaid, seven day a week intern; this determined man went on to become one of the most successful movie directors, producers and screen writers of our time. Did he achieve this through thinking “my dyslexia will hold me back”, did he achieve this through thinking “I am unlikely to make it”. No, he achieved this through having the highest, most abundant thoughts possible and hence creating his reality of success. Abundance in life is not just for the chosen few; it is for absolutely everybody. The universe has more than enough love, wealth and success to go around. The key is to raise those thoughts to a higher pulsation, the key is to think the most plentiful and successful thoughts available and keep in harmony with that vibration until you see the materialisation in your outer reality. If there is inner inharmony be sure there will be inharmony on the external to coincide with that. Attracting the very best in your life is yours for the taking, but will you take a cup from the ocean of abundance, or bucket after bucket? subjects. The man that is rich in money has a belief that money is something not to be worried about, he knows firmly that money comes in large quantities and goes out in large quantities. He is happy to give and receive in this area, with no negative thoughts involved. When we concentrate on abundant thoughts i.e. thoughts of no lack; then this perception becomes our reality. Thoughts that are not abundant in any area attract a shortage into our lives. Some examples of thoughts that are opposite in abundance or focused on scarcity are as follows:
we create the actions towards gaining these exact results. Or as specified here; an unrewarding relationship, mediocre success, an average salary and frequent illness. As children, we are influenced by our direct environment, so the teenager that holds a self-limiting belief towards money will have gained this from a parent who too, thought money was something to fear. If there is a lack in an area of your life, analyse the thoughts towards that certain subject. Is the thought positive or negative? Could a better, more empowering thought be nurtured and become a reality for you? By

The Emergency Care Specialist and Veterinarian, Dr Ahmed Azeim says, “I enjoy working with animals because they cannot easily communicate their problems so being able to help them is very satisfying”. They are trying to educate pet owners in Bahrain to understand the diseases their pets can have. The lack of awareness in Bahrain
can sometimes lead to serious complications for the pets. They truly care for animals, and their entire team is by far the most dedicated we have seen in all of Bahrain. “The most rewarding time is when people say ‘thank you’ for what we have done,” says Dr Ahmed. And Dr Eman adds, “It’s a great day when we are able to fix a long standing problem with a pet that the pet owner thought just wasn’t curable. It’s a great feeling to be able to help”. At the Animal Care Clinic in Hamala, you are guaranteed to get veterinarians who take pains to get the correct diagnosis for your pet, before prescribing any medicines. They explain the treatments in detail so you’re completely aware of your pets’ needs - and all of this comes at a very family friendly price. Animal Care Clinic will have their grand opening on 29th September, from 12pm to 3pm, with tours of the clinic and give-aways.

Packaging Waste Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale and use - but later turns into waste material. This month, Rehan Ahmed, gives tips on what we can do to reduce packaging waste.
P
ackaging provides a physical barrier between a product and the external environment thereby ensuring hygiene and reducing the risk of product wastage due to contamination. Packaging also protects from mechanical shock, vibration, compression, temperature while acting as a barrier protection from oxygen, water vapor, and dust. Packaging helps extend the shelf life of food items while also providing information on how to use, transport, recycle, or dispose of the package or product. The packaging sector accounts for about two percent of the GNP in developed countries. About half of this market is related to food packaging. Packaging is considered to be a major contributor to waste and when compressed in landfill, packaging from all sources is less than 5 per cent by weight and volume of total waste. Packaging accounts for roughly 30 per cent of municipal waste in developed countries. In spite of continued improvements in packaging, huge quantities of waste are generated due to packaging alone which have to be collected, stored, and transported ending up at landfill sites. Few materials degrade in modern landfills. Even naturally biodegradable products may not degrade in today’s landfills because of the lack of air and moisture that
bacteria need to thrive. Consequently, many packaging materials would be recognizable if dug up from a landfill 20 years in the future. For change to happen, it’s not just the packaging that requires alterations but also our lifestyles and habits of consumption. The best way is to practice and integrate the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) into our packaging practices. We have to work together to reduce the packaging and its allied waste. We need to
be cautious and look around in our home, office, school or shopping area and see how better we can help. The best means of managing packaging waste is to practice and integrate the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) into our packaging practices. Reduce: Eliminate non-essential components of packaging, minimize the number of materials used, reduce weight and volume of materials used, employ bulk delivery systems, use repairable pallets and multi-layered, multi-material packaging. Replace single use packaging with multi-use. Purchase durable and long life material.
Eng. Rehan Ahmed
Reuse: Packaging should be designed to be reusable, refillable, returnable and durable to the greatest extent possible. Reuse used packaging materials, return containers to suppliers for reuse, encourage suppliers to send products in reusable packaging material. Use reusable pallets instead of single use pallets. Recycle: Packaging should be designed to be recyclable and/or made with recycled content. Recycling saves money, and reduces on hauling costs. Encourage suppliers to use materials which are made of recycled material. Consider ways in which the packaging could be redesigned to make it more recyclable. Also check if components of the package can be replaced by recyclable material. Determine if materials are suitable for recycling, determine the impact of additives, inks, labels, and tear tape, which may hinder the recycling process. While shopping, choose products with minimal packaging or products with packaging that is reusable, recyclable or made from recycled materials. Take reusable bags for shopping. Look for durable multi-use products instead of single use disposable products. At School, pack lunches and drinks using a reusable lunch box and thermos flask. Do not use disposable utensils like cups, knives, forks and spoons. At Home, reuse grocery bags as garbage bin liners. Reuse jars or sturdy boxes for storage purposes in the garage, workshop or kitchen. Reuse envelopes. Turn empty containers into something useful around the home. Reuse gift-wrapping

The absence of any provisioning requirement reflected prudent and conservative provisioning actions taken in prior years. Consolidated total assets at the half year end were seven per cent higher than the 2011 year end level.

Project Catch, Neuter, Return!
S
ights like these are an everyday occurrence in Bahrain these days and many complaints have been written to the press in recent years about the increasing number of stray dogs on the Island. Sadly, as yet, there is no municipal stray animal control in Bahrain and therefore the strays are shot as an eradication solution. This is not only inhumane, but has proven totally ineffective in controlling the population long term. Until now the BSPCA has been unable to assist due to lack of staff, suitable premises to successfully carry out a nationwide CNR programme, or the funds to deal with the burgeoning number of strays that roam residential areas. Recent discussions with the municipalities, ministries and the Animal Wealth Directorate have resulted in the Society obtaining approval to run a nationwide Catch, Neuter & Return project. We hope that this will commence after the move to the new Animal Welfare Centre is completed in August; but first we need your help to complete a 7 day survey of the feral dog population in the first week of July and again in the first week of August. We need the public to assist us in supplying data so that we can form an accurate picture of where and how many packs there are in the country. We hope this is not too much to ask of you to help us to stop the shooting. The Society is happy to announce that the Dogs Trust International has agreed to provide guidance and support while we develop the nationwide scheme. The BSPCA needs the public’s help to gather information. All it takes is a quick phone call or an email to give us the following data:
• The number of dogs • Are they puppies / juvenile / adult You will be able to find all the information you require (including a survey form to download) to help the BSPCA in this task on www.bspca.org. Watch for updates on our Facebook page, BSPCA Official Page and through the press. The BSPCA team will also be on the streets throughout July and August carrying out the survey and once we have the facts we can collate the information, and select the areas that are most affected by the problem of dog packs. Dr Hansel and his team will begin the fieldwork operations in September, once funding is available. The purpose of the project is of course population control. We need to neuter as many of the Islands strays as possible to stop them from breeding, returning the docile and healthy dogs to their own area and dealing humanely with those that are too feral, sick or injured to be returned. Once all the major packs on the
island have been dealt with it will become easier to deal with the ones that evade the traps and eventually the problem of strays will virtually disappear. The shooting will stop and the sad sight of starving mums and pups will diminish, as well as the aggressive attacks we have seen of late and we can all sleep happy in our beds knowing we have dealt with the situation in a humane way. The best result for both canines and humans. If you feel you would like to be of more help on this nationwide project beyond phoning in to us when you see the strays, please contact the BSPCA shelter on +973 1759 1231 or email: bspca@batelco.com.bh. The BSPCA is a charity and this programme will be funded mainly by donations, so if you or your company would like to make a donation specifically to the CNR project, there is a separate account for the humane population control project, so you can rest assured your money will be used for this project alone.

Amy Warman
Let Bahrain Confidential take you into the Blogosphere in Bahrain. Amy Warman, who runs the blog ‘Appetite for Discovery’ chats with Maliha Aqueel about her passions and her blog.
A
my Warman is originally from Australia but has lived in Bahrain for most of her life. Her interest in travel began at a young age, sparked by her travel experiences with her father, who is a pilot. She started her career in insurance but felt it wasn’t quite right for her and left that industry last year, creating an opportunity for her to pursue her true passions; food, travel and photography. Amy describes her blog as “an ideal place for those looking for recipe or travel inspiration or those who want to take a minute or two out of their hectic lives to enjoy a bit of ‘me’ time and maybe even get their own creative juices flowing”.

What do you hope to achieve from your blog - on a personal and professional level? On a personal level, I hope to encourage others to try new things, maybe inspire them to host a dinner party for the first time or go off the beaten track on their next holiday. I get a huge thrill every time someone tells me they loved one of my recipes or enjoyed looking at my photos. On a professional level I hope that the blog will serve as a platform for me to showcase my work to potential clients who could benefit from my writing or photography services. Can you describe the different sections of your blog? At the moment food is the most dominant section of the blog. There I share recipes and

How did you first think of the concept for your blog? It was actually my husband who encouraged me to start the blog as a way of bringing together my love of food, travel and photography. I chose the name Appetite for Discovery because it reflects my thirst for new experiences and also my hope that the blog becomes a place where my readers can make new discoveries too.
write about other ‘foodie’ experiences like cooking classes or market visits. The travel section features personal accounts of trips I’ve taken and includes recommendations of things to see and do – of course there’s a bit of a food slant there too! Do you plan to have an app for mobile devices? To be honest, it isn’t something I’ve considered as yet, mostly due to the costs involved. I’m very active on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest though so I regularly chat and interact with mobile users on those networks. The layout of the blog does adjust for mobile users too, which is great for those on the move. From the topics you cover on your blog what do you like writing about the most? I only ever write about things that I am passionate about so I guess I would say I enjoy writing about all topics equally. The amount of food related content might suggest otherwise though! How did you decide to do photography as well as writing? Many people do just one. I think it was actually the other way around for me. My interest in photography developed first and then I started writing to accompany the images on the blog to tell the story behind them. When starting the blog I didn’t really consider the option of doing one or the other, in my mind they work hand in hand so I was determined to be good at both Visit Amy’s blog at: www.appetitefordiscovery.com, Facebook: www.facebook.com/appetitefordiscovery, Twitter: www.twitter.com/appfordiscovery and Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/amywarman

Recipes Roasted Vegetable Pasta Salad with Feta & Rocket (Serves 8-10 as a side dish) This healthy salad is great for summer entertaining and can be enjoyed warm or cold. The vegetables and pasta can be made in advance. A great accompaniment to meat or served alone for lunch or a snack. Ingredients 250g cherry tomatoes 3 peppers (mix of red, green, yellow or orange), cut into 2cm cubes 400g courgettes, cut into 2cm cubes 6-8 baby eggplants, cut into 2cm cubes 400g butternut squash or pumpkin, cut into 2cm cubes 2 large red onions, cut into 2cm cubes 3 cloves garlic, crushed or finely chopped 1 handful chopped fresh parsley 1 ½ tbsp dried oregano 1 tbsp dried basil Olive Oil Sea salt & black pepper to taste 250g pasta (conchiglie, fusilli or anything else bite-sized) 200g light feta cheese 2 or 3 handfuls of wild rocket
For the Dressing 3 tbsp pomegranate molasses 3 tbsp lemon juice 80 ml extra virgin olive oil Method 1. Before preparing the vegetables, preheat the oven to 200ËšC/400ËšF. 2. Place all the vegetables in a large nonstick baking tray. Add the garlic, herbs and salt and pepper. Drizzle generously with olive oil and mix well so all the vegetables are well coated. Place in the oven uncovered. 3. After 45 minutes, take out the tray, stir the vegetables well and return them to the oven for another 30-45 minutes or until they are soft and starting to brown. In the meantime,
boil the pasta in a pan of salted water for around 10 minutes or until it is al dente. Drain and set aside. Cut the feta cheese into 1-2cm cubes (not necessary if you are using crumbled feta) and set aside. 4. For the dressing, whisk together the pomegranate molasses, lemon juice and oil in a jug and set aside. 5. Once the vegetables are done, pull them out and allow them to cool for about 15 minutes. Once cooled, place them in a large bowl and carefully mix in the pasta, half of the rocket, the feta cheese and the dressing. Season with salt and pepper. Place the remaining rocket in a neat pile on top of the salad and serve. For a more substantial meal, top with a sliced, grilled chicken breast.

Things to know Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.
Avoiding Offence
Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.

News Bites Run for The Stairs
Rescue crews in Siberia say the cow they found on the fifth floor of an apartment building was apparently ditching an amorous bull in its pasture. The desperate cow apparently bolted from a field in the village of Lesogorsk recently after the love-struck bull repeatedly interrupted its peaceful grazing. The cow took off with the bull in pursuit and ran into the nearby apartment house. The cow clambered up to the fifth floor while the bull loitered around the front door. Emergency personnel said the cow seemed to have no desire to leave the premises. It had to be lassoed and virtually dragged to the lobby while mooing in protest.
Wheely Bad Luck Too Many Babies on Your Facebook Feed? Unbaby Me!
Documenting a baby’s every move is a hallowed tradition on Facebook. But some people might rather look at photos of kittens or puppies or bacon. And now they can (without unfriending their more offspringoriented pals!) thanks to a browser extension called Unbaby.me. Using Chrome, it is quick to install and on your facebook feed, baby photos will be replaced by ‘more suitable images’ like kittens, puppies, turtles, ice cream or whatever you enjoy! The default replacement images are all of cats, but you can plug in a photo feed of your choice …

News
Six year old Isaak Lasson can finally breathe easy after three years of sinus problems. The cause? A single wheel-shaped Lego piece that he got stuck up his nose back when he was 3. Numerous doctors looked at Isaak’s nose and prescribed antibiotics, but only when a new doctor examined him recently did they suspect a foreign object and found a ball of fungus encasing a Lego wheel. “We think he bent it in half - it’s pretty flexible - and that it opened up once it got into his sinuses,” Isaak’s father told reporters. Although Craig Lasson momentarily worried he was a bad parent for needing three years to figure out the Lego problem plaguing his son’s sinuses, he said he is happy that Isaak is eating and sleeping better than he has in years.

Out-of-the-ordinary news bits gathered by our Bahrain Confidential Team from around the world. Great Escape
At the Welsh Mountain Zoo near Colwyn Bay, visitors were shocked when a chimpanzee appears to instruct them on how to open its enclosure so it can escape. The chimpanzee uses sign language to ask the zoo visitors to turn the bolt on the glass to help him escape.
Big Foot
A man who ordered a special slipper to fit his oversized foot was sent a size 1,450 - after manufacturers failed to spot a decimal point in his order. Tom Boddingham, 27, has a size 13 right foot while his left is slightly bigger and measures a size 14-anda-half. But when he ordered his custom-fit slipper manufacturers in China misread size 14.5 and accidently made a whopping 7ft long size 1,450.

Horoscopes “A friend to all is a friend to none”- Aristotle Virgo 22 August -
21 September Virgos are in their summer perfection this September when your efforts on behalf of your local community reach global proportions. Retrograding Uranus may place a tack or two on your domestic superhighway but it is just the cosmic way of encouraging you to take stock and appreciate who you have. Spread the good cheer and count your many blessings.
Libra 22 September
- 22 October If you have been paying your professional dues, Saturn provides you with a nice payoff beginning this September. However, if you have been slacking off, screwing around and just getting by, this humourless planetary taskmaster will place you on the rack and turn the screws. Thankfully dear Libras can always find a bit of respite among friends. Ah but will they hire you...?
Scorpio 23 October
- 22 November You are at the pinnacle of your performance thanks to lucky Jupiter. Don’t stop the motion as September gets fully underway, Scorpio. Saturn and the Uranus and Neptune retrogrades fail to tempt you to relax and kick back. Good thing too; the secret is to set your course and set sail while the opportunity presents itself. Sit back and relax in the fall.
Sagittarius 23 November -
21 December Sometimes a bolt out of the blue is just what is needed to knock down barriers. Expect such a bolt this September when Saturn and retro Pluto conspire to upend your landscape and clear away debris. But are you prepared to haul it away uncomplainingly, Archer? Retrograde Neptune has your tongue in a twist. Use it wisely and don’t say a negative word.
Capricorn 22 December
- 19 January Your eyes may be too big for your stomach this September as Jupiter increases your sexual appetite while Saturn suggests a diet. Deal with relationship issues before they deal with you. Capricorns may be tempted to quaff their thirst at the office water cooler but sip your tall cool one at home even if the taste is a bit lukewarm. Next month the well may be dry.
Aquarius 20 January
- 18 February Aquarians are apt to make an even more unusual first impression than usual this September. Could it be retrograding Neptune or that faux leopard jumpsuit? Perhaps it is a bit of both. But don’t let uptight, humourless naysayers rain on your parade. When you got it, flaunt it. And you’ve got it! Just don’t spend it all in one place.
Pisces 19 February
- 20 March Pisces start September off with a Uranian bang and the month becomes almost uncontrollable from there. As much as you may try to rein events in, the planets prove to be surprising, devious and a bit mischievous. Why ask why, friend? Swim through the Neptunian funk and fog and apply all that mystique into creative enterprises. Body painting anyone?
Aries 21 March - 19 April
Rams are in for a psychic blast this September as Uranus broadcasts your secrets and exposes your inhibitions, ready or not. This blast of fresh air may place your relatives and family at odds with what you really want to do, especially when sour Saturn crosses the threshold into your home and family sector. Too bad for them, friend. You will learn to deal with it and with them.
Taurus 20 April - 20 May
Are your ears burning? Pluto retrogrades and everyone is talking about you this September. Will you behave or let excitable Uranus and ditzy Neptune encourage you to run amok? You may become a bull in a china shop before the month is over. But all’s well that ends well if you can think of the right thing to say. Can you think of the right thing to say, dear Bull?
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
It may be difficult to decide which path to take once September gets fully underway. Venus and the Sun highlight your finer points while retro Uranus may make your finer career moves a bit, shall we say, blunt and bold? No sooner do you think you are ready for the corner office when you suddenly view life from the cubicle. Need more paperclips, Gemini?
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
Crabs might be struck at the power they are able to command especially among acquaintances as wise old Saturn inches into their sign this September. But don’t let it go to your head, friend. In love relationships, retro Uranus and Neptune are ripe for mayhem and chastisement. Those who “kiss and tell” wind up with a toad instead of royalty. The warts are a giveaway...
Leo 23 July - 21 August
Bold and beautiful Lions are the leaders of the pack this September thanks to Jupiter in their own sign. People gravitate to your orbit and revolve around your gravity. Show the unkempt masses how it is done with style, but maintain a good sense of humour at the same time. Saturn and retro Uranus will find a way to cut you down to size if your ego becomes too big for your body.

Royal Reflections
deusvolt@hotmail.com
This month, Mohammad Al Rasheed, recounts an emotional journey inspired by a recent trip to his old haunts in France.
I
met the queen. And I want to tell you about it. Of all the royalty in the history of mankind no one has fascinated me more than Eleanor of Aquitaine, ‘by the grace of God, Queen of England.’ That’s her title, but she was really a French woman of superior and exceptional qualities. She inherited Aquitaine, a region of France rich and fat. She married the French king and divorced him. Then she married that rogue king called Henry II and her progeny included Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland (the former of Crusade fame the other of Robin Hood misery). This year I decided to revisit my old haunts in France. The Loire Valley is a prime destination. So I decided to pay her a visit. She is buried next to her husband miles away, but the chateaux de la Loire are full of her fragrance, including Chinon where her husband, for having roused his children against him to take his throne away, imprisoned her. That’s what I call a woman of substance. Now if Mrs Thatcher thought the lady was not for the turning, she should have met this lady who redefined royalty. She was everything you would want in a human being: she plotted murder, she coveted thrones,
she roused her children against their father, she fought wars – she even went on a Crusade and declared that the world must be coming to an end when ‘carpenters hang on crosses.’ So she said, or was reported to have said. For all that, Henry could not control her even within the walls of a prison. And, surprise, surprise, when Henry died, she was actually ‘sad.’ I went to the chateaux where she lived and could re-live something of history. For all her faults, she was a
lady (of a certain age) who stood next to me at Eleanor’s tomb and lingered more than other tourists did. “Do you know her?” she asked. “We have not met, but I think I do,” I said. She turned around and sat on the cold stone bench. “I spent my life studying her,” she said. “It is hard to find anyone who really remembers her”. I could not tell her the obvious, namely that the queen has been dead for a thousand years or thereabouts. It did not seem to matter. There were two mad people who seemed to remember and that seemed enough for the moment. When I got back home I simply could not tell where I had spent my holidays. How on earth do you tell people that you followed in the footsteps of a queen who died ten centuries ago? Granted that I have a reputation of being ‘odd’, this somehow seemed overboard. I decided to tell them that I went to Cannes and paid fishermen to fish for me so I can take pictures with the fish they caught. That seemed right. They all do it. Then again, true to my ‘oddness’ I write an article about it all and give myself away. Don’t hold your breath, all the people I know never read. They watch television and I am never on that screen. So I am safe

woman who knew what she wanted and never flinched. The Loire valley is something to behold. It should be visited for its own sake. And for all the kings and queens who occupied its sumptuous palaces, none comes close to Eleanor. I know I am overloading the dice when it comes to Eleanor. But there is truth in the passion I feel for her. She somehow represents all that is “bad” in human history, yet she did it with charm and murderous elegance. This is not my verdict; it is the verdict of History. This is also the verdict of a certain
