Adding Business Benefits with a Smart VMS

any manufacturers offering advanced video technologies will argue that their systems are intelligent, and to a degree they’d be right. Today’s video processing capabilities have expanded the potential from such solutions, making automated decision-making a reality based on data gathered from the captured footage. In the past, video data was usually processed manually, which was both unreliable and inefficient. If an incident occurred, an operator would need to scrub through hours of video (usually video in which nothing of interest happened) to find snippets of footage which showed how the incident occurred and who was involved. The process was labour-intensive, and often the time constraints meant some events were inevitably missed. For the business or organisation which had invested in the solution, this gave the feeling their
The modern VMS is so much more than video management software, and when an appropriate solution is specified, business and organisations can realise significant benefits across a wide range of operational activities. These benefits not only add value and increase the return on investment, but can also create intelligent solutions which ensure maximum efficiency when dealing with events. money had been wasted. In recent years, the use of new technologies and powerful video processing has resulted in video data being significantly more accessible. As a result, not only can securityrelated incidents be found, quickly and with ease, but the captured video data can also be

The Role of AI in Compliance Monitoring
I
n today’s increasingly regulated world, compliance is a significant issue for many businesses and organisations. While the exists a necessity to ensure legislation, codes of practice and regulations are adhered to, company policies and procedures are correctly applied and standards are met, the actual monitoring, recording and management of compliance issues can represent a drain on time and resources. As necessary as it is, compliance costs money, and with a growing emphasis on cost efficiencies across the commercial and industrial sectors, anything that can reduce the amount of time and/or resources dealing with compliance issues should be welcomed by the vast majority of end users. For most businesses and organisations, there are two sides to compliance. The first is a case of ensuring the processes and
For modern businesses and organisations, compliance is a critical element of day-to-day operations. Whether user have to be compliant with health and safety directives, industry codes of practice, standards or simply internal operational policies, the issue of ensuring compliance takes up time and resources. For integrators and end users, the ability to implement enhanced compliance monitoring and management can be a significant benefit and adds to the return on investment. procedures laid down for any given business – whether enshrined in legislation or regulations, or implemented by the company itself – ar adhered to. ybersecurity is an evolving and complex threat that those delivering any type of connected solution must take seriously. Where smart systems are deployed to protect a site and its personnel, ensure a business operates to its maximum potential, deliver efficiencies in terms of business and site management and add value to a customer’s investment, it is critical that the system in question does not inadvertently bring the business to its knees. It is a fact that lax levels of security have, in the past, made some smart systems – including security and safety systems – relatively attractive to those implementing on-line attacks. It also must be accepted that hacking a system via a security devices is seen as ironic and a bit of a scalp for cyber criminals. With the increased use of IoT, intelligent buildings and smart cities, the threat becomes more significant.
Cybersecurity is set to become one of the most prominent issues for businesses and organisations looking to implement smart solutions in 2020. End users are demanding secure systems, and evidence shows they will often delay investment in such solutions unless it can be demonstrated that appropriate steps have been taken to secure the network and associated data. It is also vital that those designing and implementing smart systems are aware of – and able to implement – the latest cybersecurity principles and practices. For integrators of smart systems, device manufacturers, service providers and software vendors, the time for talking about

Eagle Eye completes Mexico City project
Eagle Eye Networks has completed a large scale, fully integrated city-wide surveillance program, installing 13,720 cameras in 4 months. The project has been a large success for Mexico City C5, contributing to the City’s CitizenSafety mobile application. This mobile application facilitates content sharing for more effective neighbourhood watch and a panic SOS button.
J
aime Abad Valdenebro, CEO of Omnicloud.mx, stated, ‘Effective citywide surveillance is more than installing cameras in a few key locations; it’s about creating a platform that meets the unique needs of each municipality. In partnership with Eagle Eye Networks we leveraged the Eagle Eye Video API and SDK to customise a unique web application that is designed to integrate fixed, mobile body worn and vehicle cameras into one interface, providing an unprecedented
level of insight and awareness into our cities operations.’ 4G connectivity with Eagle Eye Networks’ bandwidth optimisation was utilised in order to facilitate this quick deployment, installing approximately 250 cameras per day at its peak. The cameras are all operational, remotely monitored and providing safety and security to citizens today. This fast-paced installation occurred amidst the global supply chain challenges caused by COVID-19. However, Eagle Eye Networks’ strong partnership with both Omnicloud.mx and suppliers provided alternatives and solutions to keep the project on schedule. The solution was chosen because the Eagle Eye Cloud Video API Platform provides an open solution that allows integration of new technologies (AI, advanced analytics, search, number plate recognition) and new devices from third party suppliers at any time. Futureproof technology and cybersecurity were crucial elements in the decision-making process.

A Smarter Approach to Intruder Detection
While intruder detection offers a high level of security for businesses and organisations, nuisance activations still remain an issue. End users are increasingly looking to enhance the performance of their solutions, and with alarms this includes visual verification. This can be achieved with any professional alarm system by adding the OPTEX Intelligent Visual Monitoring solution.
V
ideo is a great enabling technology, and its pivotal role in a diverse range of applications has grown significantly in recent years. As digitisation has spread throughout the video industry, so the options available have grown, often allowing added value to be introduced to legacy systems. There have also been a number of cases where traditional shortcomings of certain technologies have been eliminated with the addition of video.
OPTEX is a well-established market leader in the field of accurate and reliable detection devices, and as a result understands the benefits and the weaknesses of intruder detection systems. Whilst accurate and reliable detection is achievable, there will still be nuisance activations created by innocuous events. Many of these will be attributable to user error, such as someone entering a protected area without unsetting the system. While such events are not a failing of the technology, they can lead to a system losing its URN and, as a result, police first response. Operators at an ARC have no way of knowing the cause of an alarm, and if they receive a confirmed activation, it will be passed to the police. While the concept of visual verification is not new, it hasn’t been as widely embraced by many users because of reasons of cost. Even if a site has a video surveillance system, linking this with a professional graded alarm system isn’t always straightforward. Additionally, where this is done, ARCs often have alarm monitoring and video workstations in different parts of the control room. As a result, many sites miss out on the ability to reduce nuisance activations, along with other benefits which integration with video makes available.
Intelligent visual monitoring OPTEX has designed its Intelligent Visual Monitoring solution to enable easy integration between video devices and graded alarm systems, enabling ARC operators to carry out visual verification at their alarm workstation. This allows fast confirmation of the cause of an alarm event. The Intelligent Visual Monitoring solution allows intrusion sensors and panic buttons to be linked with local IP cameras. When a detection occurs, images from the linked camera are captured and sent, with the alarm signal, to the ARC, enabling operators to view the cause of an alarm and make a decision as to whether or not the

Operating safely in the COVID-19 era
In recent weeks, an increasing number of businesses and organisations have been allowed to return to some degree of operational status, albeit with a need to manage certain aspects of the way in which they work. While many people refer to the ‘new normal’ as a significant challenge, there are ways in which current technology can assist.
