SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

February 2022 An underlaying word for 2022 seems to be Hybridisation. Whether it is for risk mitigation or for prevention, we see companies adopting a hybrid approach as the transition from purely physical security to a more virtual solution takes place.

T

he power of analytics has been boosted by the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and the interconnection through the IoT. More comprehensive and accurate data is now available in security ecosystems. As Uri Guterman from Hanwha points out, AI brings new levels of situational awareness. When it comes to access control systems, the trend is to go fully hands free. Biometrics are now much more reliable, in particular facial recognition. A positive legacy from the pandemic has been the wide adoption of contactless systems. Also SaaS-delivered identities, are now becoming the norm. The influence of the cloud as a video storage and sharing solution across different sectors, is undeniable. This month we report on Videoloft’s cloud adapter for a simple remote camera monitoring on any mobile device. The need to flex the plastic in our wallets is being replaced by digital wallets. However, if you think that this will give the security industry green credentials, you’ll have to think again. Efforts towards making the industry more sustainable have been made, but we are not there yet. At Benchmark we keep close eye onto the developments of the security industry and its innovators. Some changes are only gradual but if we are to capitalise on the opportunities that customers needs brings us, we need to stay on top of the wave.

Midwich acquires DVS Midwich has acquired a majority stake in Cooper Projects Limited, the parent company of DVS Limited (DVS), a UK based distributor of video security products. Based in Cardiff, DVS was founded in 2003 as a specialist distributor of CCTV and associated video recording technologies, in which it has developed a strong market reputation working primarily with leading global brand Hikvision. In recent years, DVS has begun to diversify its portfolio to include complementary technologies, such as access control, intercom, and intruder detection. DVS provides solutions for trade customers throughout the UK, across key verticals including the corporate, retail and residential markets amongst many others. An extensive range of value-add services are provided to customers by DVS including project design, ongoing technical support, training and the innovative proprietary installer programme which connects end-users with DVS customers in their geographic and technology area. Stephen Fenby, Midwich Group Managing Director, commented, “The acquisition of DVS gives Midwich access to a significant segment of the Security market in which we currently have little presence, and which is expected to grow at around 8% per annum for the next five years. The knowledge and support of the experienced DVS team should help realise new opportunities for our customers in an increasingly converging technology market. Similarly, we believe that much of DVS’s extensive customer base uses or could use our core AV products in their projects. We are very excited at the prospect of supporting Tim, Gavin, David and the rest of the DVS team in

Faster hybrid cloud adoption to be a trend in 2022 Genetec shares its predictions for key trends for 2022 for the physical security industry, including largescale deployment of video analytics, faster hybrid cloud adoption, and a sharper focus on supply chain risks. Monitoring occupancy and space utilisation will remain a top priority Within months of the pandemic, businesses were deploying different solutions to track occupancy in their buildings and control social distancing. Almost two years later, this trend is still growing because they’re seeing value from the data collected.

Beyond safety objectives, organisations will embrace the use of spatial analytics data to reduce wait times, optimise staff scheduling, and enhance business operations. As businesses give employees the flexibility to split up their work time between the office and home, organisations will be looking for ways to best optimise their workplaces. By using space utilisation intelligence, they will be able to analyse employee office attendance, monitor meeting room demands, and make informed floorplan changes such as adding more desk-sharing options. Video analytics will become more viable for large-scale deployments In recent years, demand for video analytics solutions has been strong. As AI techniques such as machine learning and deep learning continue to bolster the power of analytics, more organisations are eager to invest. However, because complex video analytics still require very powerful servers for

Insightful situational awareness with AI Uri Guterman, Head of Product and Marketing, Hanwha Techwin Europe says that video cameras, in particular with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), are bringing new levels of situational awareness and understanding to security teams and other business functions.

C

ompared to some other technologies, video cameras haven’t been around for that long. First used in 1942 to observe a rocket launch, cameras didn’t become used

publicly until the 1960s. This makes the technology’s numerous advances since then all the more impressive – improving image quality and capture, footage storage and integrations with wider security and business systems. Becoming what we recognise today as a core part of every security function – and beyond. Video cameras are set to advance again, thanks to AI maturing and becoming mainstream. A trend that was accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic with 52% of companies increasing their AI adoption because of Covid-19 and 86% stating that AI is now mainstream in their organisation. In video cameras, AI plays a two-fold role in making image analysis possible but also improving the quality and reliability of captured footage. As the complexity of cameras and data have increased, so too has the need for intelligent and quick ways to process it.
