SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS
February 2023
Hello, and welcome to February’s issue of Benchmark magazine.
What are your new year’s resolutions for 2023? Have you got an actionable plan in place, or are all good intentions falling off the wagon a month on?
Training, online and in-person education and manufacturers’ loyalty programs for installers are firmly in place and continue growing. It’s worth checking out your favourite security manufacturers to see what they have to offer. Many companies are committed to rewarding loyal customers with rewards apps and free training. Have a look into this and reap the benefits.
As we get into 2023, some continuing trends are apparent: AI-powered security cameras, Cloud storage and interconnectivity - check out our interview with HID on Smart Buildings. However, the way these technologies will evolve and for which applications will depend on use cases, the changes in the financial markets and other world events.
Providing a security infrastructure that is flexible, compatible with other devices, easy to configure and easy to install is the best way to stay prepared for the coming year and beyond. If you are an end user or a specifier, choosing scalable technology is the most crucial consideration, so your or your client’s business can grow with it.
We see continued demand for new applications of artificial intelligence, deep learning technology, and A/V analytics to deliver actionable business insights.
Low-carbon initiatives and green manufacturing trends are very inspiring in the security industry. Many security manufacturers are introducing products with longer lifespans, recyclable materials, and renewable energy sources, reducing waste and emissions. Solar-powered solutions, such as those offered by Webeye, continue to increase, and the effectiveness is clear to see.
Finally, it is important to note that from January 2023, the Fire Safety Regulations 2022 for England, which makes it a requirement for responsible persons of high-rise residential buildings to provide information on their building/s to their local fire and rescue service, has come into force. The Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report recommended implementing this regulation as a critical step to prevent future tragedies. Article 24 of the Fire Safety Order imposes the Regulations on England only. You can find the Regulations on the UK Government’s website

Hanwha Techwin’s Top 5 Video Surveillance Trends for 2023
Hanwha Techwin
previews the Top 5 Video Surveillance Trends for 2023, focusing on cuttingedge technologies, including AI, computing at the edge, and the convergence of the IoT. It also explains why cybersecurity and the responsible use of technology will become increasingly important.
To date, traditional video applications have called on AI to reduce false alarms and allow the forensic search of video based on object attributes.
However, AI centred on metadata has become commonplace. End users are now looking for reprocessed information such as vehicle type statistics in a given time period or customers’ gender and age by different hours – rather than metadata that merely aggregate vehicle, gender or age data.
This is because users can gain greater insight and make better business decisions by accessing and managing their information directly. In other words, information becomes most valuable when the user can use this data in the most efficient and relevant way to them.

DSAR is on the rise.
Are you ready?
Video analytics and compliance software business Facit has reportedly seen a 200% increase in companies looking to implement a system that would optimise their Data Subject Access Request (DSAR) compliance.
We are all familiar with GDPR by now. Article 15 of the GDPR, entitled the ‘Right of access by the data Subject’, states, “Any person whose image is recorded on a Video Surveillance System has a right to seek and be supplied with a copy of their own personal data from the footage.”
Video footage is personal data, so anyone captured in a video has the right to request a copy of the footage. The request is called a DSAR and must be responded to by the organisation that holds the footage within 30 days.
In line with GDPR, the identities of any other individuals visible in the footage must be obscured or redacted. A vehicle number plate
Getting Hands-on with Paxton’s Free Installer Training
What is it like on a Paxton installer training course, and is it worth attending? Benchmark was invited along to join in with a group of installers at a recent session.
Given the constantly developing nature of technology, product training is an essential component of the security installer’s career development path. Many see
training as a perk of the job, and while it may mean a day or two off the tools, it represents a long-term benefit. For the employer, training is also worthwhile in the form of a competitive edge when it comes to contract tenders. There are a number of options for those looking to empower their engineers with the latest knowledge and system skills; however, if there is a specific technology that requires training, then often the company that developed and brought the product to market is the ideal source. This kind of training helps in both ways; the engineer talks to the people that are the closest to the equipment, and the manufacturer gets to speak to the installers who will be regularly working with the kit. It’s

HID is expanding its Smart Buildings presence
We spoke to Jaroslav Barton, HID’s product marketing director for physical access control, to take his views on the future of Smart Buildings.
Last year, for the first time, HID attended the Smart Buildings Show, showing its interest in expanding into areas beyond just the security sector.
“In recent years, we have seen an evolution in the Smart building environment,” noted Barton, “Installers today look to security solutions not as a stand-alone but as an integral part of a more holistic approach to the smart building concept.
“Buildings used for business purposes must include attractive features to enhance the user experience and add value to those renting the
Smart buildings are not a completely new concept. However, these days the quality of services and functionalities that businesses expect from their office or business space has increased. Of course, keeping things as sustainable as possible, energy-efficient, and safe is a must, and according to HID, there is scope for thinking smarter and bigger.

Ujazdowski Castle, the Centre for Contemporary Art chooses Hanwha
The Centre for Contemporary Art based in Ujazdowski Castle, is a space that uses art to help visitors reflect on the world. It aims to invite discussion about some of the pieces where different art disciplines blend together in creative experiments.
To achieve this, the space – which is located at the heart of Warsaw, Poland – hosts events, exhibitions, a cinema, a bookshop, a library, and an art residency programme.
State-of-the-art
The Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, needed a system that was flexible to the different needs of the many spaces in the museum, and that worked with the castle’s 13th-century aesthetic. The team decided to invest in advanced IP cameras to deliver state-of-the-art video and audio analytics to protect people, assets, and artwork with great accuracy.

Waddesdon Manor adopts digital key solution from Abloy UK
Waddesdon Manor was built between 1874 and 1885 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild and is home to the Rothschild Collection of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.
Opened to the public in 1959, Waddesdon Manor is managed by the Rothschild Foundation, a family charitable trust, on behalf of the National Trust, which took over ownership in 1957.
The Manor House needed an access control system that could secure storerooms and valuable artwork and assets and keep members of the public away from restricted areas.
Keys in the existing locking system were badly worn, and the security and facilities management wanted to upgrade to a proven state-of-the-art solution that provided control of key management and more information, such as audit trails.
Mid-Beds Locksmiths Ltd – who have been responsible for the heritage and modern locks and ironmongery at the site for over 20 years –and the security team at Waddesdon conducted a survey of the site to identify the locks that most urgently needed replacing in stage one of
