SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

December 2021 Welcome to the latest edition of Benchmark magazine your digital round-up of the month’s leading news, technology launches, solution applications and articles offering advice and overviews of the latest ways to improve the performance and efficiency of security systems.

T

hese are unprecedented times for the electronic security sector, with a workforce returning to offices and buildings that have sat empty for most of the previous 18 months, coming at a time when installers and consultants have clients who are more tech-savvy than ever. Most of your customers have spent the last year familiarising themselves with networked consumer goods featuring HD touchscreens, analytics and wire-free hardware. Hence, their expectations of what their security systems should do for them is exceptionally high. During the early months of the pandemic, many of you will have seen interest in thermal monitoring systems, quickly followed by mask detection analytics and the use of people counting to promote social distancing. However, some of these ideas proved to enjoy a short period of buying activity on the market, with some manufacturers even falling foul of attempting to describe thermal cameras as Covid cameras or fever cameras early on. Many retailers, restaurants, and pubs opted for cheaper QR codes and handheld temperature devices rather than thermal cameras and analytics to do the job. The main ‘take’ from the pandemic for the industry was that a move towards hands-free access control rather than keypads etc., will probably be the driving force behind R&D and marketing for the foreseeable future in that discipline. Combine this with a return to the office and the widespread use of NFC enabled smartphones, and you get a picture of how the next few years may pan out for the access sector.

Thermal cameras are on the rise across the globe T

hermal cameras are not new technology but in the fight against the global pandemic the heat sensing technology has taken centre stage; as one of the tools used to detect high temperatures which could potentially detect COVID-19. The research team specifically focused on how each region viewed thermal cameras as a form to combat COVID-19, a way to ease us out of the pandemic and its potential impact in the future. The regions analysed for the research were North America, Africa, Asia, Europe, The Middle East and Latin America. More than 400 articles were collected around the world concerning thermal imaging technology since the start of the pandemic till what is recently available. TextBlob was used to analyse the

Construction sites to depend more on monitored tech for security The construction sector is now experiencing a boom period following the suppression of building work during the pandemic. But alongside the pipeline of busy works schedules, there is also a surge in site thefts, further exacerbated by the shortage of materials. The consequence is delayed projects, and spiralling costs as some components' prices soar.

T

he price of copper has soared by 70% in just a year, whilst lithium carbonate, used to accelerate silica-based cement and mortars, has all but doubled, rising by 97%."The construction sector has always been a target for thefts of valuable plant and equipment," comments Paul Corten, Sales Director for leading temporary security

provider, The VPS Group. "But we are increasingly seeing opportunistic thieves replaced by organised criminal gangs, as the price of plant and materials means greater rewards for the risks they take. Surprisingly, the majority of construction sites do not rely on Monitored Tech solutions, even though these systems provide the most efficient form

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Reopening city centres safely after lockdown Returning to city centre environments can be exciting for some, and essential for business, but we have learned that risks are also attached to it. City centres and towns have suffered severe consequences as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. For a city to thrive post-lockdown, people need to be reassured that it is a safe and secure place to go, whether for work or for leisure. ity centres have migrated from analogue to digital in the past several years and have become increasingly interconnected. Interconnected services can use digital technologies for information,

C

communication and surveillance. The technologies available today can enhance the quality and performance of urban services, reduce costs and resource consumption, and simplify effective engagement with citizens. "A city centre is an ecosystem that needs its balance; otherwise, it will negatively impact vertical markets such as transportation, retail, and public services,” points out Nick Smith, Business Development Manager at Genetec (pictured). “The safety of citizens and businesses in city centres has always been a top concern for law enforcement and local councils. Advances in IP physical security technology, including video surveillance, access control, license plate recognition, and intrusion, offer councils options that they might not have been able to consider before."

R

emote working, more flexible business hours and the need to keep employees healthy demand that security automation and site video management is easy to use and can be trusted. For this reason, Paxton has taken mindful steps to enhance its Paxton10 platform to cater to businesses’ growing demands. Research has shown that simplification on how a system is installed, networked and managed plays a crucial role in implementing

the correct type of security for a site. Whilst developing Paxton10, the company’s survey results showed that out of 1400 sites fitted with Paxton’s Net2 access control, 936 had video surveillance, yet only 62 of these sites integrated the two. This, according to Paxton, is due to perceived complexity. The same research also indicated a need for integration between access control and video management systems. On average, 1 in 10 sites integrates the two systems.

pened in 2020, the purpose-built NHS facility consists of 123 beds over eight wards. The £53 million development represents the Trust's ambition for a new centre delivering innovative treatments to improve recovery times for people with mental health and learning disabilities. The challenge was to provide convenience and safety to all guests, visitors and staff; Mersey Care Trust's new development required a full security solution encompassing CCTV, video intercom and access control. In addition to managing

complex access requirements spanning many different levels of authorisation, the Trust also wanted to ensure the doors' integrity was maintained in restricted areas of the building. This would not be effectively provided with a purely mechanical key system, lacking traceability and creating issues if keys were lost or misplaced. Such a scenario could also lead to key duplicates, making it harder to limit access and potentially lead to escalating costs if the entire suite of keys needed to be replaced.
