Honeywell Security

HONEYWELL’S GALAXY FLEX AND FLEX+ - Advancing home and business security Honeywell’s Galaxy Flex and Flex+ security control solutions are ideal starting points for installers when designing an advanced security system

E

nd users want more from their security systems. The rise of connected home technology, a market that is expected to reach $19,411 million by 2021 in Europe, has raised consumers’ expectations for what their technology can achieve at home and in their workplace. But although consumers want these new services, they do not realise the additional safety benefits security systems can provide. The support of a knowledgeable installer is still essential to ensuring they understand and have the right system for their needs. Honeywell’s Galaxy Flex and Flex+ security control solutions are ideal starting points for installers when designing an advanced security system. The Galaxy Flex and Flex+ supports an advanced security system, and will introduce push notifications via the GX Remote Control app in early 2017. With these installed, the user is automatically notified on their mobile device if an alarm is triggered, providing peace of mind whenever they are away from their home or business. Unlike SMS notifications, these do not rely on a GSM phone as the information is sent through an IP connection to the user’s device. All users benefit from knowing the status of their systems, wherever they are in the world. Smart security systems like Galaxy Flex also provide some additional home automation functions. Homeowners have basic control over multiple elements, including gates, garage, blinds, and heating, all through one interface whether the homeowner is at home or not. When at work, for example, they are notified through the GX Remote Control App when the system has been unset – indicating that their child is home from school for example, and that the heating has turned on automatically. A smart security system like this also provides additional environmental protection. For example,

4

the Galaxy Flex system can be linked to a smart valve so that if a water leak is detected the water supply is cut off, preventing flooding while the property owners are away. The same principle can be applied to gas detectors, cutting off the gas supply when triggered. The system also keeps families safe while they’re at home, by connecting smoke and carbon monoxide sensors. Families are notified via push notification directly to their phones if the carbon monoxide level is rising, and can take appropriate action.. By offering these additional safety measures, installers provide homeowners with a complete smart security system that protects their lives, as well as their assets. Many of the benefits these systems provide are useful for small to medium sized businesses too. Business owners can look to automate their roller shutters in a similar way to home automation - when approaching the shop in the morning, the manager can unset the alarm and have the shutters rise automatically and vice versa at the end of the day. This level of automation provides an additional layer of security and means staff have more time to spend on tasks such as stock-taking, where their contribution is more valuable to the business. With Galaxy Flex+, remote business owners also receive push notifications when alarms are set or unset to monitor employee activity, so they can ensure the business is opening and closing at the right times when they’re away. Galaxy Flex+ also supports access control security, allowing business owners to control which employees have access to valuable stock rooms, for example. These features can all be controlled via one interface connected to the site’s Galaxy Flex+ panel, for additional convenience. As ever, the role of the professional installer is essential in educating their customers that their security systems can do more for them than just securing assets when they are away. Possessions can be replaced but lives cannot. Security systems deployed to their full capacity can monitor and alert families and business owners to life safety and environmental risks and provide early warnings to avoid damage and even loss of life. For businesses too, these notifications give the business owner more flexibility and control over their premises, even when they’re away, for complete peace of mind. What works for one family or business may not be ideal for another, but using the expertise of a professional installer to identify home and business owners specific needs, end users can be reassured that they get the right system, at the right budget for their needs.

PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

Bosch Security

AUTODOME IP STARLIGHT 7000 HD

T

he AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD is a highspeed PTZ dome camera that delivers unmatched picture quality and network performance day and night. The camera has superb high-definition (HD) 1080p25/30 video and 30x optical zoom. Easy to install, the camera is available in either a field-proven, indoor/outdoor pendant housing or an indoor, in-ceiling housing. The camera provides complete network-based control of all dome functionality including pan/tilt/zoom operation, pre-sets, tours and alarms as well as web based configuration of all dome settings. It also provides direct network video streaming using H.264 compression / bandwidth throttling to efficiently manage bandwidth and storage requirements while delivering outstanding image quality.

Exceptional low-light performance The latest sensor technology combined with the sophisticated noise suppression results in an exceptional sensitivity in colour. The low-light performance is so good that the camera continues to provide excellent colour performance even with a minimum of ambient light.

• Excellent low-light performance • High Dynamic Range (120 dB) for challenging bright and dark scenes • Built-in Intelligent Video Analytics to trigger relevant alerts and quickly retrieve data • Enhanced camera reliability with optional dual, redundant power ensures continuous 24x7 operation • Dedicated AES 256bit crypto engine for secure recorded video

Image Stabilization As PTZ cameras continue to increase their optical zoom capabilities, image stabilization becomes critical to eliminate movement caused by unstable camera mounts. Minor movement of the camera mount can shift the field of view by a large distance when the camera is zoomed to a high value. This can render images unusable. The camera incorporates an Image Stabilization algorithm that allows the camera to detect continuous vibration. If it detects vibration, the camera dynamically corrects the shaky video in both the vertical and horizontal axis, resulting in exceptional image clarity and a stable field of view on the monitor.

Intelligence With built-in video content analysis (VCA), the camera reinforces the Intelligence-at-the-Edge concept where edge devices become increasingly intelligent. The camera comes with the state-ofthe-art VCA method by Bosch, Intelligent Video Analytics, that reliably detects, and analyses moving objects while suppressing unwanted alarms from spurious sources in the image. With this method, the camera is able to detect idle and removed objects as well as loitering, multiple line crossing, and trajectories. This method also supports BEV (Bird’s Eye View) People counting. Intelligent Tracking The camera utilizes the built-in Intelligent Video Analytics to follow an individual or an object continuously. When Intelligent Video Analytics detects objects while the camera is in a stationary position, the camera activates the Intelligent Tracking feature. This feature controls the pan/tilt/zoom actions of the camera to track the objects and keep them in view in the scene. The new Intelligent Tracking is based on robust flow detection algorithms which can reliably track moving objects even under challenging scenes.

Data security Special measures have been put in place to ensure the highest level of security for device

6

access and data transport. The three-level password protection with security recommendations allows users to customize device access. Web browser access can be protected using HTTPS and firmware updates can also be protected with authenticated secure uploads. The on-board Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) support, guarantee superior protection from malicious attacks. The 802.1x network authentication with EAP/TLS, supports TLS 1.2 with updated cipher suites including AES 256 encryption.

Content Based Imaging Technology Content Based Imaging Technology (CBIT) is used to radically improve image quality in all lighting conditions and to identify areas for enhanced processing. The camera examines the scene using intelligent video analytics and provides feedback to retune the image processing. This provides better detail in the areas that matter and better all-round performance.

Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction – reduce bandwidth and storage requirements The camera uses Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction which actively analyzes the contents of a scene and reduces noise artefacts accordingly. The low-noise image and the efficient H.264 compression technology provide clear images while reducing bandwidth and storage by up to 50% compared to other H.264 cameras. This results in reduced-bandwidth streams that still retain a high image quality and smooth motion. The camera provides the most usable image possible by cleverly optimizing the detail-tobandwidth ratio. uk.boschsecurity.com www.psimagazine.co.uk

Seagate

SMART. SAFE. SECURE. Seagate Surveillance-Optimised Storage An industry first, Seagate celebrates its 10th year of shipping surveillance drives with its latest 10TB SkyHawk offering for surveillance systems relying on large storage solutions for network video recording (NVR)

S

kyHawk drives use rotational vibration sensors to help minimise read/write errors, and can support the razor sharp vision of 64 cameras, more than any other drive on the market. Ideal for modern, hi-resolution systems running 24/7, SkyHawk drives also come with a data recovery services option for additional peace of mind.

Who needs it? What problems does it solve?

Surveillance system integrators and installers bidding on surveillance projects are often challenged with increased data retention needs. Growth and retention of high-definition content requires scalable, high-capacity systems to archive content. Clients need to move to high capacities to support 10K+ hours of HD, or even 4K content. They also require increased drive performance to support multiple cameras over analogue or IP systems. To make sure performance level is sustained the storage solution must have high levels of vibration tolerance for recording and archiving content. At the same time low power consumption helps to reduce heat emission and save costs over months or years of 24/7 system use.

Avoid returns and reduce postdeployment maintenance costs

To deliver reliable performance in multi-drive systems surveillance hard drives must offer RAID support. This will help to keep the drives in the

In summary

SkyHawk celebrates ten years of surveillance drives optimised for heavy write loads and built for video surveillance systems with multiple drives and high camera counts. The key benefits include: • Up to 10 TB supports 10K+ hours of HD content and 64 cameras per drive. • Surveillance-optimised with ImagePerfect firmware. • Rotational vibration sensors for reliable performance in multi-drive, RAIDenabled systems. • Workload ratings of 180 TB/year, 3x that of a desktop drive and competition. • Quick time-to-record for motion sensing cameras. • 24 7 operation with 1M hours of mean time between failures (MTBF).

field longer. There are still many myths around the difference between CCTV-class hard drives and cheap, personal computer storage. It is true that desktop HDDs are affordable so why purchase a surveillance drive? Dedicated surveillance drives like the newest SkyHawk deliver optimised performance with top reliability for surveillance systems. SkyHawk drives are equipped with ImagePerfect firmware tailored to meet surveillance performance and reliability demands. They are able to handle high camera count and meet more stringent reliability specs. But what’s even more important, they have three times the workload rating of desktop drives, driving down the cost of ownership. With ten years of experience in shipping surveillance drives, only Seagate offers features to improve performance in large drive count systems, RAID systems and quick time-to-record. Some competitors charge a premium to purchase surveillance storage with this feature set.

Key trends you need to know for 2017

For the first time, network video recorders (NVR) are expected to out-ship digital video recorders (DVR) (IHS, 2015). 2,500 petabytes are expected to record daily by 2019 (IHS, 2015). The number of cameras shipped will grow 23% (IHS, 2015). These macro trends will have implications on your clients’ storage needs: new generation systems need flexibility to scale to meet system and capacity requirements. The more data stored, the more valuable it becomes for analytics. You can protect your customers’ data with Seagate +Rescue Data Recovery Service. It gives you a brand new opportunity to add even more value to your solutions, helping you to build stronger relationships with your customers and increase the margin! Help your clients to mitigate risk, and be prepared for the unthinkable with a three-year Seagate +Rescue Data Recovery Service plan. Under the protective wing of SkyHawk, vandalism, viruses and accidents are no longer the end of the world. Seagate offers fast and easy recovery process — data can often be restored in 15 days or less with industry-leading 90% success rate.

PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

Pyronix

Pyronix HomeControl+ Supreme commercial & residential security now has an app to go with it Commercial and residential have met their app

Stylish with swift and convenient installation, HomeControl+ provides a total security, monitoring and lifestyle solution

Protect, access, control and monitor a property from anywhere in the world with the Pyronix HomeControl+ App. Supreme security just got even easier thanks to the application that turns any smart device into a portable keypad for the Enforcer HomeControl+ and EURO 46 APP panels. Available on iOS or Android, the application allows the setting and unsetting of areas, the ability to check on each individual sensor, the ability to check event history and even view live streaming HD video of the property. With Pyronix, the security system already boasts absolute security, with both multi-awardwinning two-way wireless and hybrid capability, but now the systems also provide on-the-go control and usability from anywhere. This includes customisable push notifications that can alert the user when there is a fault or alarm, or they can be personalised to send an alert when, for example, their children have arrived home safely from school. The benefits continue, as this is the first ever panel and application combination compliant to IA1501:2015 industry standards, meaning that the security system can provide complete peace of mind and utmost ease-of-use for any residential or commercial installation.

The PyronixCloud offers so much more than just security

The PyronixCloud is the communication gateway between the panel and the HomeControl+ App; it provides an overview of all the connected systems, allows the ability to set up users and notifications and provides many more fantastic advantages. Utilising the highest level of encryption, the PyronixCloud controls the access between panels and the application, so that app users can be activated and deactivated on the system, as well as authenticating the HomeControl+ App access each time users attempt to connect. This, combined with the fact that no personal data is stored ensures maximum security is maintained. Because the PyronixCloud connects via a cloud server, there is no on-site setup of static IP addresses or

12

configuration of network connection. Instead, an account is simply set up on PyronixCloud.com, which saves time, increases the number of installations that can be completed and as a result, increases profitability. Furthermore, the PyronixCloud infrastructure allows for remote programming and diagnosis of systems using Pyronix’ InSite UDL software. This keeps call out costs to a minimum and allows recurring revenue streams to be established by offering management services or passing access to users. This increases customer retention and makes the HomeControl+ a more profitable solution.

Maximum flexibility, maximum peace of mind

A multitude of upsell advantages are available through the expandability and flexibility of the Enforcer HomeControl+ and EURO 46 APP systems. Both panels offer the same superior range of reliable and established security peripherals, including the stylish KX range of indoor detectors or the robust range of external XD detectors. This allows for each security system to be tailored to meet and surpass the installation needs of any property. The peripherals available can also protect the occupants of the property too, with smoke, water leak and carbon monoxide detectors all available. What is more, with Pyronix’ multiaward-winning range of Enforcer two-way wireless devices, installation is swift and simple with features like one-push-to-learn and Signal Strength Indicators (SSI). So, should an extension, garage or outbuilding be added, more detectors, life protection sensors, shock sensors and much more can be added quickly and easily without having to refit an entirely new system. There is even an extensive range of communication modems to choose from too, so that the panel can perform optimally and to budget. There is also the range of Surface or Flush Mount Keypads with interchangeable casings. So, should a building require redecorating, the security system can be amended to perfectly suit the updated décor.

Bespoke Add company logos and branding by simply uploading them to the PyronixCloud. Once uploaded, the image is displayed on all HomeControl+ Apps that are connected and managed through the cloud account. This, combined with the ability to order logos and branding on Deltabells and Invincibells guarantees brand consistency throughout the installation.

IDIS

TWENTY YEARS OF INNOVATION IDIS was founded in 1997 by experts in computer science and artificial intelligence – Y.D. Kim and Albert Ryu, who still head up the company today. Next year will see IDIS celebrate its twentieth anniversary and twenty years of innovation

F

or the last two decades, IDIS has been primarily responsible for the innovation of digital recording technologies, which has seen the company become the largest video surveillance manufacturer in South Korea. With headquarters and manufacturing facilities just outside of Seoul, IDIS now operates across 40+ countries and 100+ strategic partners with more than 1.9 million recorders installed worldwide and over 15 million cameras utilising IDIS technology. As part of those celebrations IDIS is proud that its flagship offering launched in 2013, DirectIP™, remains the cornerstone of the IDIS Total Solution offering. Unique to the industry, DirectIP is the easiest and the most complete HD surveillance solution platform available to the security market. The primary goal of DirectIP is to provide customers with an HD surveillance solution platform which is easy to use, simple to install, and quick to configure through plug-and-play capability.

The IDIS DirectIP difference

Unprecedented scalability for any surveillance need DirectIP systems are incredibly easy to scale up as required. The free IDIS Center VMS supports up to 1,024 DirectIP NVRs, which allow for the management of 64,000+ IP cameras, while IDIS Solution Suite supports an unlimited number of IP cameras. Multiple NVRs can be united as one system to create a mini matrix.

Managing Complexity Through Innovation DirectIP is a one stop shop and affordable solution, delivering true plug-and-play simplicity to a range of cameras, monitors, and network video recorders (NVRs), with a full-featured, completely cost-free video management software (VMS). Remarkably simple to install and maintain, DirectIP goes beyond mere “plug-and-play” capability, delivering an auto-configured, preengineered solution that is affordable and high performing.

Reduced maintenance requirements mean lowered costs

A pre-engineered solution that removes guesswork without restricting choice

All IDIS equipment is both forward and backward compatible, putting an end to rip and replace methodologies. IDIS Solution Suite, IDIS’s next generation and modular VMS, allows users to manage integrated security from both an NVRbased network security and existing DVR-based systems and all with free software and firmware upgrades. In addition, DirectIP provides a user friendly interface for integration with existing sensors, audio, cash machines, point of sale (POS) systems, storage devices, video sources and recorders and well as supporting third party cameras and ONVIF®.

With IDIS DirectIP, say goodbye to the calculations and guess work previously required to determine the necessary specs for a PC serverbased solution. Questions such as “What CPU do I need?” “What VGA will be required?” “How much RAM will the system need?” or “Is there enough network bandwidth?” no longer need to be asked. The only thing users have to determine is how much storage will be required and the DirectIP solution handles the rest.

Hikvision

THE DARKFIGHTER CAMERA RANGE - Ultra-low-light surveillance The Darkfighter ultra-low-light PTZ camera range from Hikvision won the reader vote in the PSI Premier Awards in 2016 and has proven invaluable for many customers

H

ikvision, the world’s leading supplier of innovative video surveillance products and solutions, was proud to be the winner of the CCTV Product of the Year 2016 category in the PSI Premier Awards for its range of Darkfighter range of PTZ cameras. The industryleading ultra-low-light cameras provide crystal-clear colour images down to as low as 0.002 lux, in black and white to 0.0002 lux and to 0 lux with IR – conditions that would defeat conventional low-light models.

Best of the industry PSI bestows its Premier Awards annually, with a reader vote honouring the products and distributors deemed the best the industry has to offer. Over 1000

nominations were received across the Awards’ eight categories in 2016. Features, benefits, ease of installation and service were all factors taken into consideration in the nomination process. Hikvision International Marketing Director, Keen Yao, said the company was delighted to win the PSI Premier Award. “We were thrilled to receive this award from the readers of such a wellrespected publication,” he says. “We believe our Darkfighter PTZ cameras offer outstanding performance, features and value, and we’re honoured to see that the readers of PSI magazine agree.”

Superior performance The Darkfighter PTZ range features up to 36x optical zoom large 1/1.9’’ progressive scan CMOS chip with 2MP full HD resolution. The cameras integrate up to 200m IR for true darkness vision with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation), 120dB WDR, 3D DNR, and IP66 environmental protection. The range also boasts a host of Smart detection technologies and Smart Tracking function to further improve image quality and operational convenience, and streams full HD 1920 x 1080 video at full frame rate.

Darkfighter real world results - Eccles Town Centre

“We were astonished at the clarity produced by the new ‘Darkfighter’ cameras. They really do turn night into day and give us pin sharp images which help immensely”

16

The Darkfighter PTZ is producing a raft of positive results for the City of Salford, in north-west England. The Council’s CCTV operatives had struggled when using previous cameras to provide an effective 24hour monitoring service because they were unable to obtain high-quality, low-light images in the late evening. That changed when they installed Hikvision Darkfighter PTZs in Eccles Town Centre, and were immediately able to view and record high resolution colour images even after 11pm at night – when the majority of incidents occur. Salford Deputy City Mayor Councilor David Lancaster said: “We were astonished at the clarity produced by the new ‘Darkfighter’ cameras. They really do turn night into day and give us pin sharp images which help immensely.”

MAKING THE CASE FOR THE VESDA-E VEP – Targeted detection

The VESDA-E series of smoke detectors brings the latest and most advanced detection technology to provide very early warning and the best nuisance alarm rejection to a wide range of applications. Built on the Flair detection technology and years of application experience, VESDA-E VEP detectors achieve consistent performance over their lifetime via absolute calibration. In addition, the VEP delivers a range of revolutionary features that provide user value.

T With most fire detection systems this forces a trade-off between very early warning and increased risk of costly nuisance alarms with VESDA-E this is not the case www.xtralis.com 18

he entire VESDA- E range has the ability to discriminate between different smoke and particle types which is a major benefit for environments such as Datacom facilities, especially those located in major urban locations. These dense urban environments are characterised by background levels of ambient pollution, including motor vehicles, manufacturing smoke, dust and soot. These ambient levels inevitably enter even the most sterile facility – via air-conditioning systems, loading bays and the movement of staff and clients. Just one malfunctioning capacitor somewhere in the facility can bring disaster. Even a contained smoke of fire event can be extremely costly. Estimates of the cost of downtime in a Datacom facility suggest the average cost is in excess of $500,000, and that’s without factoring in the cost of equipment contaminations, data migration, or consequent damage to brand and reputation. All VESDA-E detectors, featuring VESDA Smoke+, offer dramatically increased sensitivity if required, up to 15 times greater than previous

models. VESADA-E ‘s range of intelligent Flair™ detection technology and VESDA Analytics means targeted detection of threats is possible without nuisance alarms. VESDA WireTrace™ allows specific targeting of burning wire events at levels close to the ambient environmental smoke level. This, along with VESDA DustTrace™ allows monitoring of the environment for dust and can warn of contaminants in free air cooling, or if HVAC filtrations should fail. Monitoring and reporting is made simple through integration with the VESDA Connects suite of integration solutions. With most fire detection systems this forces a trade-off between very early warning and increased risk of costly nuisance alarms with VESDA-E this is not the case. Xtralis has strived for many years to promote very early warning performance based detection philosophy through CPD courses and regular VESDA Accredited training courses. The aspirating smoke detection industry has leapt forward in recent years. Xtralis has been the pioneer and market leader for many years, with the widest portfolio and global experience. The latest VESDA technology innovations allow us to not only identify smoke but also work towards identifying what type of particles are being produced. This is enabled by the patented Flair Technology in the VESDA E series range of detection. This technology not only opens a world of future possibilities for the way we look at smoke detection but also drastically further reduces the risk of false alarms whilst still providing the highest possible level of detection. Xtralis are working with all the global leaders in the Data Centre industry to ensure that the legislated design principles are adhered to and the best equipment is specified in order to create efficient, reliable and cost effective solutions. That collaboration has helped in the latest developments. Whilst there are several ‘me-too’ products that purport to do the same job, VESDAE far exceeds the market expectations. Xtralis has worked hard to ensure backwards compatibility too to provide simple upgrade solutions from not just its own legendary Laser series of detectors but also other manufacturers’ products. Whether considering a new facility or upgrading, VESDA-E is the detection technology of choice and fit for today and tomorrow.

PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

THE IMPORTANCE OF REDUCING THE MISUSE OF ACCESS CONTROL CALL POINTS

T

oo often there is confusion when it comes to mistaking the emergency access control call points as a means of exiting through an emergency exit door, when the ‘push to exit’ button should be used instead. As a standard practice the call point and push button are installed side by side, which can lead to mistakenly activating the wrong device. Inappropriate use of access control call points can also result in unauthorised exits or entries through emergency exit doors, it could encourage unwanted attention and offer a means of people walking in and potentially stealing equipment from your building. There is an ideal solution when it comes to protecting and monitoring the use of access control call points and push buttons against accidental or malicious use. The STI Euro

Stopper® is a clear tough polycarbonate cover specially designed to easily retrofit over an existing device, providing protection within minutes. If malicious activation is likely to be a problem, covers with an optional, localised deterrent alarm can be installed. When a level of weather protection from IP24 to IP56 is required, within the range are covers and enclosures which are ideal for use in extreme conditions, indoor or outdoor. The STI Euro Stopper® is now available with a new feature. The frame of the product is embedded with a unique substance that glows in the dark. The Glow Guide pigment will release light for up to 8 hours in darkness or dimly lit areas and charges up after only 30 minutes exposure to natural or artificial light. It is essential for guiding you to safety in emergency situations. The Glow Guide is not the only new feature to the Euro Stopper® – the polycarbonate cover is now supplied in a kit form, allowing the user to assemble the product in the way which best suits their application, with the choice of green or red housing shell, language, mounting option, sounder and breakseal facility.

PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

Videcon launches VXHAHDM DVR range Trade-only security distributor, Videcon Ltd, has launched the Concept Pro VXHAHDM DVR; an exciting addition to the AHD recording range designed to deliver the most popular Concept Pro features into any residential or commercial application

A

vailable in four, eight and sixteen channel options, the VXHAHDM offers real time recording and playback of 1080p video over coax from high definition analogue cameras. Compatible with all traditional analogue cameras, a Concept Pro AHD system is the perfect solution to upgrade legacy CCTV systems to HD by utilising the same coax infrastructure - reducing install times and allowing installers to offer incremental HD updates for each camera on site. Built on the established Concept Pro platform, the VXHAHDM offers the same setup experience, functionality and benefits as the rest of the current AHD and IP recording line-up. Without a selection of the more specialist features only needed in the most high-end of applications, the VXHAHDM allows installers to be as competitive as possible when quoting for business of all sizes. No matter if you are installing an IP or AHD system; on-screen operation of Concept Pro professional recorders, including the VXHAHDM, stays exactly the same by using the brilliantly simple Concept Pro GUI. This means, for installers who start to install the VXHAHDM, no additional knowledge is required to install and support any other Concept Pro recording device found on the market. Like the rest of the Concept Pro line-up, the unit is compatible with the powerful, license-free video management software, iPims. With the ability to connect to all Concept Pro professional IP, AHD and Analogue CCTV recorders, iPims allows users to record footage and operate up to 256 recorders from a single location. The software can also be used by installers as a proactive site management tool allowing them to identify camera issues remotely and gain access to recorder settings without needing physical access to the device. Compatible with the Concept Pro AHD4 camera range, users can benefit from an extensive range of the fixed, varifocal lens, motorised lens and high speed dome options, all with the ability to deliver crystal clear 1080p image quality. The VXHAHDM is remote monitoring enabled and can connect to any monitoring station using Immix or Sentinel software platforms. Providing a 24/7 monitored service allows installers to increase their year-on-year revenue through

annual service subscriptions and maintenance contracts. Additionally, eight and sixteen channel versions of the unit can be easily configured for remote viewing on iOS and Android devices via the Concept Pro Viewer app and the simple scan of an onscreen QR code. Using a secure, European-based P2P server, the online ID information of the recorder is kept completely protected, ensuring confidential data cannot be accessed by third parties. About the launch, Steve Newsome, Sales Director of Videcon Ltd said: “The addition of the VXHAHDM to Concept Pro range allows installers to deliver a high definition analogue solution into any installation. Professional security installers can request a full product demonstration on the VXHAHDM with their dedicated field sales representative by calling 01924 528 000 or by visiting: www.videcon.co.uk/book-a-demonstration

AXIS’ ZIPSTREAM TECHNOLOGY – More Video Less Storage Axis’ Zipstream technology is a radically more efficient H.264 implementation, lowering bandwidth and storage requirements by an average 50% or more for many common 24/7 surveillance use cases. Zipstream technology allowing customers to benefit from reduced bandwidth and storage requirements without having to invest in new cameras or software. Zipstream technology is fully compatible with the widely adopted H.264 compression standard. The technology has been developed specifically for video surveillance applications and lowers bandwidth and storage requirements by around half.

A

Zipstream has been specifically developed for surveillance applications and enables users to drastically reduce bandwidth and storage needs without compromising on important image details

26

xis’ Zipstream technology analyses and optimises the network camera’s video stream in real time. Scenes containing interesting details are recorded in full image quality and resolution while other areas are filtered out, to optimally use available bandwidth and storage. Important forensic details like faces, tattoos or number plates are isolated and preserved, while irrelevant areas such as white walls, lawns and vegetation are sacrificed by smoothing in order to achieve the better storage savings. The user will get more video but use less storage and still keep the resolution, the frame rate and the forensic details of the video. Zipstream technology can be used alongside other Axis technologies such as Wide Dynamic Range - Forensic Capture and Lightfinder. It is fully compatible with the H.264 compression standard and can be used with the latest Axis cameras, AXIS Camera Companion and third-party video management software without additional investment. Unlike previous compression technologies,

Zipstream has been specifically developed for surveillance applications and enables users to drastically reduce bandwidth and storage needs without compromising on important image details. For example, more than twice the video footage can now be stored on SD cards or NAS’s in small systems built on AXIS Camera Companion as well as other edge recording applications. By adding a new module inside the network camera’s video compression engine, Zipstream uniquely ensures that important details in the image get enough attention in the video stream while unnecessary data can be squeezed. The two reduction methods (Dynamic ROI and Dynamic GOP) are configured separately and are independent of each other, although bit rate savings will be maximised when combining the two. Furthermore, the Zipstream methods are applied in such a way that most of the camera’s other features will work as usual, even when these compression methods are applied. Zipstream is currently available for H.264-based products but theoretically the technology could be migrated to H.265 encoders when that is technically possible. PSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

OnGarde

ONGARDE RAPID DEPLOYMENT CCTV – Secure your customers’ sites and your future business One such partner has at any one time between 30 to 40 active CCTV towers across a small geographical area generating significant income and giving them a key competitive advantage over other local rivals.

So why OnGarde CCTV?

Technology has revolutionised the way we work across many industries, security is no different. One technology that is having a great impact on how companies protect their sites and assets is the use of Rapid Deployment CCTV Towers

T

here is now a wide range of towers or systems available from a range of manufacturers and suppliers. Many suppliers of these types of products have set themselves up in direct competition with the more traditional forms of security services, however, the same cannot be said of Dorset-based OnGarde CCTV. OnGarde has chosen to actively work with the suppliers of other security services, Mike Fleck OnGarde Director says: “We know we have a great product, our customers regularly tell us this but we also recognise that our products are part of a much wider solution. To provide the end user with an outstanding level of security coverage we know other services such as man guarding or rapid response might be needed by our customers. We also know that to provide an outstanding level of customer service you need local knowledge” OnGarde work with selected regional partners to ensure that customers can benefit from a turn key security solution and local providers can increase their own revenue by providing an additional service without fear of competition, Mike Fleck continued “We work closely with our regional partners to ensure they are fully trained and as selfsufficient as possible. Once a partner has been established within a region we route all our business through them.

28

OnGarde’s strength lies in two key areas, firstly is the support that it gives it customers in terms of training this is vital if the partnership is to work successfully. Full training is supplied by OnGarde on the sale, deployment and maintenance of the CCTV towers, there is also no need to worry monitoring as OnGarde provides a full monitoring service. The second strength is of course the OnGarde tower itself which by design complements other security services. Standing at an impressive 6-metre-tall when fully extended, with a highly visible enclosure of 3 metres the tower is first and foremost a formidable deterrent. The tower also boasts some impressive technical specifications. The recently released OnGarde Duo offers dual lighting options with a choice of both LED and Infrared lights available. The tower also uses intelligent video content analytics software (VCA) that allows specific alarm areas to be created, the use of VCA also means that all alarms are verified by OnGarde’s monitoring centre. The use of verified alarms means that when one of OnGarde’s local partners gets a call to respond they can be sure that they are not waiting time and manpower in responding. That is of course unless the live audio warning provided hasn’t already scared off the would be criminal. All this from a product that can be delivered to site easily and in most cases installed and set up in an hour and if a partner does not want to set up a tower themselves then OnGarde will provide this service remotely. Breaking News: OnGarde is not the type of company to rest on its laurels and as a result they have recently introduced the OnGarde Solar tower which has meant another market opportunity can be exploited. The OnGarde Solar can work for up to 5 months without any external power making it suitable for very remote sites where installing more permanent installations or even sending man guards on a regular basis may be difficult. So if you are looking at ways to provide your customers with a better service and increase your turnover with new CCTV technology, don’t think compete, think complement.

JD’s D-TECT IP solutions provide both volumetric and long-range narrow field of view sensing, making the range extremely well suited for intruder monitoring, CCTV surveillance and other alarm warning requirements. Mark Tibbenham, GJD’s Managing Director commented: “For customers that require IP based detection, the D-TECT IP includes all of the versatile benefits of traditional analogue D-TECT motion detectors, combined with IP connectivity, providing highly reliable IP based security detection.” Utilising a combination of quad element PIR and microwave detection technologies, the DTECT IP effectively pinpoints intruders and provides true resistance to false alarms. It also works in conjunction with CCTV cameras to provide visual confirmation of the activation. This not only reduces the costs associated with false alarms, it also generates immediate and relevant action in an effort to keep people, properties and possessions secure. The D-TECT IP range provides real time remote monitoring access via a secure web-based interface; this offers a whole host of benefits including the ability to monitor from any location and at any time. There are no requirements for additional installation or software, as the user simply logs in through a web address. In addition to remote access, the user can change all of the detector settings remotely via the interface. Some of the adjustable settings include the ability to alter the LUX level trigger, sensitivity and detection range as well as setting activation for specific times. Mark continued to comment: “The D-TECT IP range is reliable and accurate with many built in user-friendly features, which is ideal for monitoring small and large outdoor detection areas for a wide range of sectors including residential, commercial, industrial and heritage sites”. Detailed alarm information triggered by the DTECT IP can be used to monitor the precise movement of an intruder using two methods. One being direct IP, as all alarm signals can travel peer-to-peer to directly communicate and control cameras, LED Illuminators, alert guards,

automatically send SMS messages or emails. Alternatively signals can be sent directly via IP to video management software (VMS). VMS solutions are often required for large installations being the most effective way to monitor all cameras. Equipped with a pan and tilt dual Infra-Red scanner, the D-TECT IP boasts a programmable beam range of up to 50 metres, which avoids boundary overspill and offers truly exceptional resistance to unwanted alarms. GJD’s digital detectors are designed to trigger genuine alerts and so ensure efficient perimeter surveillance. The range is also backed up by GJD’s knowledgeable technical support and extensive warranty package. Further features include the ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, low maintenance, eye pleasing aesthetics and a robust IP65 zinc metal weather-proof housing.

Key features of the GJD D-TECT IP range: • POE and IP communication • Web browser interface • Advanced signal processing, quad pyro and optical systems • Robust IP65 zinc metal housing • Ability to monitor large detection areas • Exceptional resistance to unwanted alarms • Variable Mounting Heights:1.5m - 6m • Pet immunity at 1.5m • Integral masking curtains to reduce field of view angle • Covert sensor module so the detector orientation is not obvious • BS8418 compliant

PRODUCT TEST “The chalk will mark a drilling hole on any surface including tile, breeze-block, granite, plaster, cement etc and the chalk is florescent and can easily been seen from a distance”

S

o what’s your preferred method of marking drill points on a wall? With a variety of potential surfaces to mark ,the humble pencil may have been superseded in recent times by a Sharpie, but there is a new kid on the block and it is creating quite a storm in the market. The Marxman pen has steadily picked up a few awards in the five years it has been around but it was the combination of its award for Best DIY Product 2015 at the Totally Tools Show coupled with a 2016 appearance on Dragons’ Den (in which every single ‘Dragon’ offered to back the product) that brought it to mainstream attention. Marxman was set up by Martin Chard, a selfemployed building maintenance man, who invented the pen after trying to fit a sink. He found that he could not mark the drilling position on the wall and also see the marks, so after a few time-wasting attempts, he reached for a can of black spray paint in desperation and marked it with that. After far too many frustrating incidents like this during the fitting of kitchens, bathrooms and putting up shelving, with lots of wasted trips up and down ladders with broken pencils and felt tips that just do not do the job, he started the process of developing a new solution. By pushing the Marxman pen into fixing holes it delivers a burst of bright chalk through the hole onto the mounting surface clearly showing where you need to drill your hole. The ‘Standard’ pen will mark drilling positions through fixing holes up to 45mm deep from 3 to 13 mm diameter onto

Marxman Standard most surfaces. For holes where you would need to mark reference points over 45mm, the Marxman Deep Hole pen is also available. It is reported that the chalk will mark a drilling hole on any surface including tile, breeze-block, granite, plaster, cement etc and the chalk is florescent and can easily been seen from a distance (particularly useful if fixing at height). The chalk is non-permanent and can be brushed off and each pen is estimated to give 200 markings.

Operation Smaller than the average pencil the Marxman Standard fits into a toolbelt, box or pocket easily enough or if space is really tight the plastic nozzle comes off with a quick pull. Firstly we tried the unit to mark the drill points of a PIR triggered security light being fitted to an exterior brick wall. The distance that the chalk needed to travel was no more than 5mm and the pen worked well, leaving a circle marking the place to drill with a bright green circle of around 2mm radius. We then tried out the ‘up to 45mm’ claim using a 6.5mm drill bit and wooden blocks of 30mm and 50mm. In both cases the ‘Standard’ Marxman made a chalk mark on the brickwork, although in the case of the 50mm it was not quite as defined as the 30mm so the claim of up to 45mm seems a valid one.

Conclusion During tests the Marxman Standard clearly did what it was designed to do and is a very simple piece of kit and, given that we’ve been using chalk to mark guidelines for years, it’s a surprise that no one invented the pen sooner. One drawback with the system which may well be soon addressed is the price of £7.99 per unit (Wickes August 2016). This is an issue that the successful investor Deborah Meaden pointed out in the Dragons’ Den episode, suggesting that a more realistic price tag of nearer £5 would lend itself to higher sales figures and impulse purchases. Also for the professional tradesman the estimation of 200 marks per pen might prove a little low and unless you are keeping count you have no way of knowing how many blasts of the pen you have left. However, purely in terms of innovation, practical use and convenience this product is a winner.

PRODUCT REVIEW 2017

PRODUCT TEST

What’s in the box? Pointsource Wireless unit Battery pack Plug-in power supply charger with multi-national connectors Carrying strap Quick-start guide (5-page)

T

he Veracity Pointsource Wireless is the latest version of this item of test equipment for engineering use when installing PoE powered IP cameras. It is promoted for such applications as: • Fast On-site configuration of IP cameras and wireless Aps (Access Points) • Site surveys and pre-installation trials • Customer demonstrations • Mobile and temporary installations

Features

Connection of a wireless device is simply a matter of finding the Veracity SSID on your device’s list and entering the default password to gain a connection 34

The unit is very well designed with a large carrying handle forming the upper part of the casing. Metal bars at either end allow the supplied shoulder strap to be easily fitted and removed. The front panel is clearly laid out with from top left to right: • Battery status indicator – 4 levels of LED indication (25% per segment) • USB socket for 5v 2A output to power or charge USB devices • RJ45 PoE camera feed connection • RJ45 Uplink network connection Beneath these sockets are an On/Off rocker switch and an adjacent Wireless LAN indicator.

Operation Prior to first use it is necessary to fully charge the battery pack; this will help maximise the life of the battery which is stated to be about three years or 200 to 300 charging cycles. The plug-in charger can accommodate one of four supplied

Veracity Pointsource Wireless

adaptor plates to suit UK, US, EU and AU socket types. Charging time is stated in the Quick Start Guide as being from four to eight hours typically with a red LED status light on the charger changing to green when the battery pack is fully charged. In practice it took around eight hours for the power supply to indicate that a full charge had been reached. It was then noted that the charger stated six to twelve hours as a likely charging time so this is probably a more realistic range. With the battery pack inserted into the device, the unit was turned on. As expected the blue WLAN indicator started flashing after 15 seconds and became constant after just under 90 seconds. Connecting a PoE enabled camera to the camera RJ45 port illuminates the PoE LED to show that a connection has been successful. 49.9v dc was measured between the orange and green pairs showing that this made a Mode A (Endspan) connection to the powered device. Connection of a wireless device is simply a matter of finding the Veracity SSID on your device’s list and entering the default password to gain a connection. Specific applications are available via the usual online sources for download to mobile phones and tablet devices however, you may need to ensure that any mobile device has suitable stream decoder drivers installed in order to view the installed cameras. A laptop PC may prove more flexible in this regard. Once running the App will search for any connected cameras and display these as a list view or as a series of thumbnail images depending on configuration setting. In the case of a single PoE camera connection then just this

camera will be available. Clicking on an available camera brings up a menu of settings and options for the camera. From here the user name and password for the camera can be entered and there is an option for these details to be “remembered”. Once such settings are entered, “View Video” and “Visit Webpage” are the key options to view the live image from the camera and to access its configuration menu respectively. With the device connected to a network a wireless-connected tablet displayed the message “ensure the network contains no more than ten devices” so this appears to be the limit of the number of addresses that the internal Access Point interface can handle. The Pointsource unit has a fixed static IP address of 10.252.252.1 for the wireless access point, the network interface can be set to DHCP mode through the “Wired Network” configuration option in which case it will take an IP address from the host network’s DHCP server or a static address can be entered. For added security it is advisable to ensure that the device password is changed to prevent any unauthorised access to any part of a customer installation if a connection to the network is made.

Menu Options The Pointsource menus which can be accessed via a wireless device or wired laptop connection are well laid out and for the web browser view provide: Cameras – shows the connected camera or a list of network connected cameras. Device – shows device details such as Name, Software version, MAC ID and battery level. WiFi Interface – device wireless address, SSID, Password, Mode (frequency) and Channel. Wired Network – External or On-board DHCP selection and wired IP address assignment. Files – File upload option. Maintenance – Firmware upgrade file selection and loading. The phone or tablet app has a slight variant on this structure with a Settings page giving access to the General, Wi-Fi Network, Wired Network and Upgrade pages.

This is a very useful device to aid PoE IP camera installation and set-up. The fact that it can link to laptop PCs, smartphones or tablets means that the images can be verified prior to the control room equipment being operational The Files Upload option on the PC browser view, handles the download of the file prior to its installation into the device. It was found that with a wireless tablet linked and the Pointsource connected to an internet capable network the upgrade file could be directly downloaded and installed onto the device through the Upgrade page. The whole upgrade process took approximately eight minutes allowing for the unit to re-boot and the need to re-connect the tablet to the Pointsource Wi-Fi. The WLAN light takes on a slow flash while the file is downloaded to the device and then a double flash during re-booting. Once the light becomes constant normal operation is restored. As with many new products there are features that would benefit from an operational manual in addition to the Quick-Start Guide.

Conclusion This is a very useful device to aid PoE IP camera installation and set-up. The fact that it can link to Laptop PCs, smartphones or tablets means that the images can be verified prior to the control room equipment being operational. The battery should hold enough power for a day of camera set-up, about six hours’ continuous operation is stated. The 30W available power should be sufficient for the majority of current devices.

Start / Stop Auto-Switch – begin or stop a camera sequence. Menu – display the main menu. Menu access at first login requires the “admin” password and this requests that the password be changed for a “strong” password of at least eight characters however there is no information on recovery if a customer should lose their password. The unit only allows four incorrect attempts but it is not stated whether this invokes a time-out or a full lock-out. After a short period of use these toolbar and menu options provide a very simple means for operators to navigate through the NVR’s features. The recorder is capable of automatically detecting and connecting own-brand cameras

connected through the PoE ports by way of a start-up wizard, alternatively a very simple to operate search function accessed through the main menu looks for any compatible or ONVIF compliant cameras in the same subnet of the connected network. Once found any of these cameras can be selected and allocated to one of the four channels that this model supports.

Menu Options The main menu options are; 1. Backup – from here all saved video clips and snapshots can be archived to external media. 2. Manual – manual recording control if required. 3. System – configuration of display formats, user rights, time and network settings. 4. Storage – recording schedules and drive information. 5. Alarm – input and output actions; some are camera type dependant i.e. motion detection and tampering. System or drive errors can generate email alerts. 6. Camera – encoding settings, OSD, Privacy masks and PTZ control set-up. 7. Maintain – a very good range of diagnostic data and system upgrade screens. 8. Shutdown – Logout, Restart and Shutdown options.

Image Playback The easy access to the last five minutes of recording is particularly useful for monitored systems, allowing the operator to quickly scan through the recent footage using a slider bar to find any activity that has just taken place. The playback window has camera and calendar date selection and once actioned gives a recording timeline beneath the image display window. A blue line is displayed for continuous recordings and an orange line signifies event activations. This timeline is initially set to a 24 hour period but can be reduced to 12, 6 and then 1 hour duration using up and down arrows to the right of the display. Dragging the pointer takes you to a specific time on the line. The replay will continue on from the end of the displayed timeline by refreshing to the next relevant time period without interuption.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

The transport controls at the bottom of the screen provide Pause/Play, Stop, Rewind 30s, Forward 30s, Speed Down, Speed Up, and Frame Advance. While the Rewind & Forward 30s buttons provide a quick method to review a section of video, the speed controls on the reviewed unit were not too user friendly. The Speed Up button cycled through 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 0.25x, 0.5x then back to 1x while the Speed Down button cycled through -1, -2, -4, -8, -16 then back to -1. It would perhaps be better described as a reverse play function; this made selection of an individual video frame more time consuming as the only way to get from 8x play to 1x was to either sequence through or use the speed down to select -1 then speed up to return to 1x. However if these functions are used through an internet browser connection then they work much more logically so this may have been a bug in the reviewed unit. Clipping controls allow a section of recording to be easily saved and backed-up to an external storage device. These are saved by default as *.mp4 files. A remote control handset is supplied with the unit (2x AAA batteries not included) but the mouse control provides much faster access to features.

Good board layout and use of heat-sinks mean that no fan is required making the unit very quiet in operation

Internal construction A single PCB of approximately 230 x 95 mm contains all of the components and in this case had connections for a single SATA hard drive, though with drive capacity up to 6TB this should be sufficient for a four channel unit. Good board layout and use of heat-sinks mean that no fan is required making the unit very quiet in operation. A single ribbon cable links the front panel controls to the main board.

Conclusion This is a very capable 4 channel recorder that should be easy to set up with just a rudimentary knowledge of IP principles and for engineers provides some very good diagnostic features.

The qulu client software appears at first impression to be unusual in its approach but is worth investing time to familiarise with its very flexible features. A 227-page qulu user manual is available for download and is essential reading to get the most from this system. Software versions for Windows, Linux and MAC are available. For the test the software was loaded on a Windows 10 PC and all features operated as expected and appeared well thought out and fully developed. his is a small-footprint video server for use with the Vista product range and their “qulu” video management software. The model on test was fitted with a 2TB drive and had four camera licences pre-loaded. The front panel has three LEDs to show status of Power Hard Drive and System operation respectively, then dual USB sockets, an RJ45 LAN connector and an HDMI socket. The rear panel just has a power connector for the 5v input. This is not a captive connector but has a positive holding force.

Start-up When connected to a network and powered-up the unit takes approximately two minutes to bootup and begin operation. The HDMI output shows the Linux loading data during this time and ends at a conventional Debian log-in prompt. There appears to be no other use for this video output as it is only mentioned for factory-use in the specification document.

This application allows the time and date and other basic parameters to be set. In practice the server information cleared from the

The qulu client presents a resource tree down the left hand edge of the window that can be unpinned to auto-hide. This tree includes all devices on the local subnet and while there is an option to delete any unwanted devices from the tree it was found that there was a tendency for these to be immediately rediscovered. This auto-discovery can be disabled in System Administration once the final system is established. A top level drop-down list provides access to System Administration, User Management and Local Settings amongst others. Right mouseclicking on any selected item in the resource tree gives access to the relevant menus for any compatible devices. The System Administration options include General, Licences, Email, Updates, Routing Management and Time Synchronisation. Recordings are all based on individual server time with the client software showing local time so use with servers in different time zones is supported. For the server, a resource monitor is available and can be dragged into the display area to show server uptime along with percentage usage of CPU load, RAM usage, Disk partition and network connection. Disk usage and bit-rate per camera is shown in Server Settings with a storage time forecast for current and additional storage being included. heatsinks. Temperature management is very good with the case temperature only reaching 31.5° C after over two hours’ operation. This coupled with the lack of any large electrolytic capacitors within the unit suggests that its life expectancy should be very good. The lack of a fan should reduce dust ingress and ensures quiet operation which will be of benefit for covert installations. The drive fitted was a Samsung Spinpoint 2.5” 2TB SATA model that is screwed directly to the chassis with no anti-shock mounts. All of the available drive space is dedicated to recordings. The operating system is held on an 8 GB SD card that is not externally accessible.

Features The qulu viewer has very flexible placing of cameras and display screen configurations in what are termed Layouts. These can contain multiple cameras, videos and images to suit. Multiple layouts can be opened (dependant on graphics capability) to suit the requirement. At the lower part of the screen a timeline is shown representing each camera’s recordings. This can be expanded and contracted to suit the time of interest with a very smooth expansion rather than in discrete blocks. To the right of the timeline are four option buttons these are; LIVE – to return from replay to live image display. SYNC – to synchronise the replay time of all images displayed. THMB – displays thumbnail images above the timeline to assist with time selection. CLND – calls a calendar display for date selection. These buttons allow images to quickly be returned to live viewing mode; replays can be synchronised or individual, allowing multiple views of the same camera to be replayed at different times for analysis purposes. The thumbnails assist with finding significant scene changes such as large items appearing or being removed. When a day is selected on the calendar display, an additional form appears with 24 hour selectable blocks. If selected the time-line shrinks to show just chosen hour or hours. Replay navigation is controlled at the left of the timeline with five conventional transport controls with a Play / Pause button in the middle. Either side of the Play button are Speed Up and Speed Down, these provide Next Frame and Previous Frame when in Pause mode. Replay speed ranges from 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16x in each direction. The outer two button are labelled as Next Chunk and Previous Chunk; these are used to skip through sections where motion activation or camera scheduled recording or Smart Search is used. Above these replay buttons a slider control acts like a jog-shuttle function allowing variations in replay speed from -16x to +16x in Play mode or 4x to +4x plus a 0.25 and 0.5 speed in each direction from Pause. This makes selection of

individual frames for evidential purposes very easy to locate. A Smart Search function allows any sections of the image to be selected from a 44 x 32 grid with any motion events being shown in the Timeline, it is then a simple matter to flick through these events using the Next and Previous Chunk buttons. Recordings of interest can be exported in AVI, Matroska, or Executable formats following selection of the start and end periods on the timeline. A warning is given if the file is likely to exceed 1GB. The Executable version includes a qulu player to allow replay of the native recording on any PC without the need to load software. Native files are watermarked and can be confirmed as valid in the player. An extremely flexible recording scheduler is provided allowing each camera to select by each hour of the day to Record, Motion Only, Motion with Low Resolution or Do not record. The motion recording has selectable pre and post activity time settings. The Motion with Low Resolution setting records at low resolution until motion is detected at which time it switches to High resolution until motion ceases. Once established for the first camera the schedule can be copied to others in the resource tree. The Number of days the archive will be held can be set to a defined number of days or automatic to be held until overwritten. A range of notifications and alert rules are possible and can be used to trigger devices or send mail notifications. These can be scheduled if required. A Screen Recording function produces an avi file of everything displayed while the function is active. This can be changed in Local Settings to record just the Application or the whole desktop if multiple windows are open. Individual screenshots can be saved as either png or jpg files. The system readily locates ONVIF compliant cameras for inclusion and configuration. The Web client view includes a “For Developers” tab that gives access to API documentation and following acceptance of their licence agreement the Video Source Integration and Storage SDKs can be downloaded from the server. The system allows for external storage and failover operation for multi-server systems.

A small but very capable network video server with good supporting client software that can be used as a basis for small systems but with potential to grow

Conclusion A small but very capable network video server with good supporting client software that can be used as a basis for small systems but with potential to grow by adding additional licences or further servers. Ideal size for covert installations or where there is a need to keep the recorder secure. The immediate availability of the API and SDK information should simplify any integration projects and further encourage its take-up.

The Makita DHP453RFW 18V 3.0Ah Li-Ion LXT Cordless Drill

The Makita DHP453RFW is a three function combi drill with hammer action, percussion drill and screwdriver functions. It is part of the LXT Lithium-ion range of tools that utilises the same battery unit for each item in the portfolio from radios and drills to a coffee maker and even a powered bicycle.

ast year Makita celebrated 100 years since it was founded as a privately managed company offering sales and repair of motors under the name "Makita Denki Seisakusho." After years of testing and improving its technology, Makita began exporting electric motors in 1935. In 1938 the company was incorporated under the name "Makita Electric Works, Ltd. Makita UK is located in Milton Keynes with a manufacturing plant in Telford. As part of the Makita global network of ten manufacturing and assembly plants, Telford is described as the only full-production facility for power tools in the UK and has been running construction on many of the company’s cordless power tools since 1991. In 2016 power tools are quite different from their predecessors and today the trend among the manufacturers is to utilise the flexibility of a range of tools that benefit from the same interchangeable battery pack. The LXT Lithium-ion range from Specification Makita follows this trend with a few notable features that will suit the Battery Power 3.0 Ah professional tradesperson. One of Battery Type Li-ion these is the extremely fast battery Brand Makita charge times. The DHP453RFW we reviewed Capacity Steel 13 mm came with a 3.0Ah battery pack Capacity Wood 36 mm (supplied as standard for this unit) Carrying Facility Moulded case along with a fast charger unit. The Charge Time 22 minute battery took its full charge in just Chuck Capacity 13mm over 20 minutes which is considerably quicker than some Chuck Type Keyless other units we have tried in the Colour Black/White past. And if you want more battery Manufacturer Guarantee 1 years life the company boasts that the Model No DHP453RFW 5.0Ah battery will charge in just 45 minutes. The combi drill itself has 16 torque settings and two speeds plus trigger sensitive speed control for finer work. It also has the usual three settings for hammer action, percussion drill and screwdriver and is keyless for easy bit change. The drill comes in a blow-moulded case with space for two additional batteries (plus the already included charger and screw bit) available from 1.5Ah to 5.0Ah. In tests we used the unit for a number of tasks and it fared extremely well. Brickwork was no problem at all, but for woodworking we would have liked a slightly quicker speed but that is just being picky. The screwdriver function was effortless. People always want to know the negatives rather than the positives from reviews yet apart from the drill speed for woodwork it’s not easy to find one with the DHP453RFW. There’s no light on the drill and it’s not available in the recognisable Makita teal, but that’s as negative as we can be. The unit we tested is on sale for £119.99 at Screwfix and while you can certainly pay more (the Makita DHP459RFE from the LXT range is listed at £389.99) you can be confident that the DHP453RFW will more than meet your requirements from a lightweight unit.
