PSI recently took part in the NSI Installer Summit event in Birmingham and met a lot of readers and had some good feedback ike any trade show the NSI Summit brought together a lot of people from the same industry who might not ordinarily meet up during the regular working week. There were over 40 exhibitors at the event plus a ‘Learning Zone’ and a conference. The delegates were those installers that had attained NSI Gold standard so the security/fire knowledge in the venue was high. For us it was good to catch up with the delegates as most of them are readers of PSI magazine and have some forthright opinions on what we cover, what we should cover and how we should do it. Some people felt the editorial content was just what they wanted, however it was clear that there were some concerns as to the input of manufacturers and our relationship with them. From my point of view I have never given anyone an easy ride just because they advertise with us. In fact for the most of it I don’t know who is advertising in the magazine until it comes out. As a few delegates pointed out, any magazine that does blur the lines between advertising and editorial (or has one person doing both duties) is not going to be worth reading - so we’re certainly not guilty of that. Another area that readers felt could be blurred by favouritism is the product review feature, although given that our tests are carried out by a third-party (so not me) we have no control over how they score the technology and their opinion of the equipment. Rest assured these are independent reviews. But I’ve never been one too proud to ignore concerns (compliments are always welcome though) so I have decided to enlist the help of a group of real experts who will give us honest comment and say it ‘how it is’ without any fear of recrimination. Get ready for a new force in opinionated editorial coming soon….

Encouraging stats One of the most memorable statistics aired at the NSI Summit conference came from Ken Meanwell of ACPO who revealed the changes in alarm callout numbers over recent years. According to the data there were 1,052,538 false calls in 1996 and only 152,700 false call-outs in 2013 which is an indication of the strides taken in not only intruder alarm technology but also installer efficiency and quality. Hopefully with the continued developments that the manufacturers have in the pipeline along with the improvements in installer training and knowledge this number will be falling for the foreseeable future. Another stat of interest from Ken was that there were 96,130 genuine call-outs in 1996 compared to 10,368 genuine calls in 2013. There are a number of reasons why this might be, but one strong possibility is that criminals are now aware, more than ever, of the risks involved with targeting an alarmed site rather than one without security in place. There’s a stat you can throw at a customer who is undecided as to the deterrent qualities of an intruder alarm. Andy Clutton EDITOR

ONVIF releases Profile C for access control

ONVIF, the standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, has announced the final release of Profile C, which brings the functionality of the ONVIF global interface specification into the physical access control arena. Through Profile C, systems integrators, specifiers and consultants are able to achieve interoperability between clients and devices of physical access control systems (PACS) and network-based video systems. With this final release, including the availability of the Profile C Test Tool, manufacturers are now able to introduce Profile C conformant products to the market. With Profile C, compatibility between access control edge devices and clients is reportedly improved, installation simplified and training time diminished because of the reduced need for multiple proprietary monitoring systems to handle different PACS devices. Profile C conformant devices within the access control system provide door and access point

information and functionality related to basic door control activities such as locking and unlocking doors, when a door has been accessed and other door monitoring tasks. “Extending the ONVIF interface into other areas of physical security emphasises ONVIF’s recognition that systems designers need a consistent interface to enable seamless integration within their security systems,” said Per Björkdahl, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee. “With the release of Profile C for access control, integrators and specifiers can be confident that products bearing the Profile C mark will work together, ultimately enabling a better physical access control solution or integrated access and video system for their clients.” Profile C can also be combined with ONVIF Profile S for video and audio streaming so users can group related access and video devices, sharing the same device management features such as network configuration and system settings.

Cabling quality and sales increase A new report from IHS reveals that over 2 million kilometres of new cabling was used in video surveillance solutions in 2013 which laid end-to-end is enough cable to wrap around the world 50 times over. A total of $540 million was spent on video surveillance cabling and infrastructure in 2013 and video surveillance applications account for 4% of the total Ethernet switch and structured cabling markets combined. The study looking at the world market for cabling, Ethernet switches and infrastructure used in video surveillance, forecasts that market growth will exceed the rate for the wider market for video surveillance equipment, as surrounding infrastructure becomes more important. When specifying systems, cabling and infrastructure has historically been seen as a low priority when compared to cameras and recorders in the video surveillance industry despite causing the majority of problems. However, this balance is beginning to change. Aaron Dale, market analyst in the security group at IHS comments, “In response to the

growing scale and complexity of video surveillance networks, users are increasingly looking to future proof their cabling and infrastructure. “Longevity of the system even beyond the camera’s lifetime is increasingly featuring in end-users cost-benefit analysis; this has the effect of increasing demand in the high end market. Indeed by 2018, Category 6a (or higher) Ethernet cable is expected to equal revenues for Category 6 (or lower) cable.” Some vendors have been quick to capitalise on growth in this market. For example, a number of Ethernet switch manufacturers have started producing a line of products tailored for use in video surveillance applications. Furthermore, there has been a host of new partnerships between video surveillance equipment manufacturers and networking equipment manufacturers. Such partnerships are likely to lead to video surveillance being increasingly incorporated on wider networks with more than one purpose. “As video surveillance users demand evermore functionality and reliability from their solution, performance of supporting cabling and infrastructure will undoubtedly be more crucial than ever,” concludes Dale.

The interview that gets the facts from the top Steve Kimber is the Managing Director of Southern/Northern Monitoring Services. Over the last 30 years SMS/NMS has grown into one of the largest independent ARCs in the UK.

Gold Awards for MBSS Marsh Barton Security Services (MBSS) has accredited by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) with a National Approvals Council for Security Systems (NACOSS) Gold Award. To achieve the Gold standard, MBSS had to show business excellence through ISO 9001 Quality Management, as well as displaying technical expertise by meeting the appropriate British and European Standards. MBSS was bought in May 2012 by Ex Royal Marine Marcus DiVincenzo who lives locally and already owns and runs a security company that offers personal security services for high profile, high net-worth personalities and event security. MBSS Director Marcus said: “It’s a great testament to the team at MBSS that we have been awarded the NACOSS Gold for our security systems. Marsh Barton Security Services has been based in Exeter for 30 years and already had the foundations of a great business. What I have done is to build on those foundations and push it forward to the top of the security services industry.”

Y3K agrees Anviz UK distribution Y3K is to introduce a new range of biometric access control products from Anviz to the UK in agreement to make Y3K the distributor for all products within the range. Anviz has created and developed a self-intelligent, multi-biometric verification algorithm named BioNANO. Incorporating fingerprint, facial and iris in one core application, the algorithm is the core technology found in FacePass Pro, a standalone facial recognition platform. With a terminal identification speed of one second, this new product will be one of the key products available through Y3K in 2014. Commenting on the new launch, Paul Singh, Y3K’s Group CEO, said, “We predict that sales of biometric security equipment will increase significantly in 2014 as the products have now become more reliable and identification speeds much faster.” Other Anviz products to feature in Y3K’s new access control line-up will be a range of fingerprint, time attendance, RFID access control products and accessories and modules.

What has been the most significant change in the industry since you started SMS/NMS? One of the most noticeable changes to the industry is the sheer quantity of signals an ARC receives on a daily basis. Another is the increased level of micro-management of the industry through standards and statutory regulation. The security industry has successfully regulated itself through UKAS accredited inspection bodies for over 40 years. We now find that nonpractitioners on committees have determined that under EN’s the ARC will receive signalled conditions. Additionally, we are in the frustrating position of being put under pressure to take out business licensing that we do not meet the application criteria for. How do your customers benefit from your multiple receiving centres compared with a single centre ARC/RVRC? The national telephony infrastructure is such that even if you are not monitoring IP or GPRS signalling systems, an ARC or RVRC’s connectivity to the network is hugely exposed due the concentration of routing deployed by the national service providers. Because of this, it is essential to have a second centre that enables you to route traffic seamlessly without the risk of interruption to service. With SMS/NMS you get that guarantee of high integrity certification and two centres for the price of one. Signalling technology has evolved dramatically over the years to reduce false alarms along with ARC filtering, can more be done? It is important to present confirmed communication failures intelligently. Consumers cannot resolve or act upon an IP or GPRS network outage and only want to know when connectivity from their system to the ARC/RVRC has failed. The recent storms have highlighted weaknesses in many standby batteries during power fails, so it is vital that installers replace poor performing standby batteries as a matter of course. We provide an automated health check report to identify these systems, along with other poorly performing systems to proactively reduce false alarms. Have you seen any noticeable trends in the signalling choices that customers are making? We have seen a significant move to dual path signalling, especially where there is a family of products that allow a system to be up or downgraded. More recently we are seeing an increase in IP signalling trending with corporates leveraging the existing CCTV on-site to provide visual confirmation. This may be at odds with the same IP signalling providers offering more ‘traditional’ PSTN/GPRS combinations. DigiAir® has quickly become a favourite with our installers as it saves labour on site whilst offering the consumer a more robust solution. What areas of security do you expect to see grow in the coming years? Due to the rise of GPRS and IP signalling, the PIR is being increasingly replaced with a motion sensing webcam. This gives the consumer visual confirmation and allows interaction with the security system via a smart device. Regrettably, I believe we will see a growth in systems that result in 999 ‘confirmation’ calls after receiving images to smart phones. If stakeholders such as ACPO accept this as a valid alarm event, it has the potential to seriously undermine the credibility and function of a fully approved ARC and the URN procedure.

Joint letter sent to CEN and CENELEC Euralarm has signed a joint letter of the European industry to CEN and CENELEC. The signing parties call CEN and CENELEC to consider having an in-depth discussion about their corporate and technical governance model with recognised stakeholders, especially industry. The background of the letter is the change in internal regulations at CEN and CENELEC without consulting any of their ‘recognised stakeholders’ from the industry. The signing parties consider the industry to be the European standardisation’s key stakeholder and main user of standards. The parties feel the industry’s contribution would be most effective if it were considered adequately at a political and technical level in the European Standardisation Organisations. The parties believe that it therefore would be highly desirable to make the whole standardisation process and structure more effective and relevant to the respective markets and society at large. An in-depth discussion between CEN, CENELEC and all stakeholders, especially industry, is in the opinion of the signing partners the start to come to a more effective standardisation process and structure. Unattended CCTV system for London Borough The London Borough of Redbridge is reportedly using the first unattended CCTV enforcement system for moving traffic offences in the UK. The pilot system has been supplied by Videalert and has been operational at four locations to monitor a range of moving traffic offences since November 2013. They include one restricted access, one yellow box junction and two banned turns. According to David Richmond, CEO of Videalert: “This new system combines video analytics and ANPR detection to capture more offences than can be achieved by traditional legacy solutions and will deliver a higher return on investment and compliance whilst increasing road safety wherever it is deployed.” The system, which was contracted through OpenView, London Borough of Redbridge’s incumbent CCTV contractor, has been installed

BAFE elects new Chairman The Council of BAFE has elected Douglas Barnett, Head of Customer Risk Management, AXA Insurance (UK) plc as their new Chairman, following the retirement of Phil Toase CBE, QFSM, DL. Phil served as Director and Chairman for nine years and had overseen the major developments and growth at BAFE, which now has over 1100 registered companies across a range of schemes and in every part of the UK. Phil said: “I have enjoyed my time at BAFE, it has been great to help shape the future of the organisation and be involved in the general acceptance of BAFE as a safeguarding organisation for the fire industry”. Douglas has over 25 years’ experience in risk management with an extensive global background. He represents the Association of British Insurers and other commercial groups in consultations with Government bodies and technical groups. In accepting the role of BAFE Chairman, Douglas paid tribute to the growth in both numbers and standing that had been achieved under Phil’s tenure. “I am honoured to take over the role of BAFE Chairman from Phil Toase”, commented Douglas, “I aim to work with the staff team to gain greater credibility for the use of third party certificated companies by end users and specifiers, with the consistent aim of improving fire safety throughout the built environment.” using a capital expenditure neutral model, whereby all costs are recovered through the issuance of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs). The system is working well and we have captured a number of vehicles committing serious traffic contraventions which is promising. I am confident this will lead to a more efficient means of enforcement, reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.”

He spent 16 years in various roles with BT Redcare, with involvement in patents on alarm signalling. How have the last twelve months been for you? We have seen interesting changes in the last twelve months, particularly with regard to the UK security market reacting to the economy coming out of recession. We have done well during the recession as the savings for end users by doing away with the phone line for security signalling has been a major cost saving. It now seems that the roll out of VoIP phone systems means that end users are questioning why they need a phone line for alarm signalling as standard. Are you seeing any trends in the demands of installers and their customers? Yes there is a definite trend for “value-added services”. What I mean by this is that customers no longer just want the alarm system for alarms only, they are also looking for adding overlay services such as energy monitoring and control, footfall measurement and communications continuity for the business. As we provide IP signalling we can address all of the aforementioned overlays and provide real costs saving and additional benefits for the installer and end user. Are there any connectivity solutions proving particularly popular at the moment and are there any connectivity measures being replaced/upgraded? Emizon dual path IP/GPRS at Grade 3 (ATS4+) is definitely the most popular, even though we

provide coverage from Grade 2 to Grade 4 over a variety of signalling paths (IP, GPRS, PSTN). The reason for this is the performance and pricing of IP/GPRS Grade 3 gives the ARC, installer and end user maximum peace of mind. We see a major shift away from analogue signalling as the pressure to go fully IP in businesses increases. Is the integration of IT with security and the influx of IT installers fitting security changing the market for you? Yes, and in a positive way. We work closely with the IT sector and IT guys “get” what we are doing straight away. The design of Emizon being “firewall friendly” and the fact we are IP based is of course a major bonus for us! Do you think that connectivity is fully understood in the marketplace? In short, no. There has been a lot of, shall I say “smudging” and frightening people about IP by the traditional signalling providers who have a vested interest in keeping the status quo. Unfortunately the IT industry will not let our industry just sit around collecting revenues which they think they have also have a right to. A warning here: move into the 21st century and embrace IP or die. In your experience, do insurers help or hinder security installations? I think insurers have been very helpful lately.

customers and those in the UK? We operate across UK, Europe and Australasia and I took the decision to independently test for all the three territories. You could of course argue that EN Series covering Europe covers the UK as well. Insurers in the UK require some local change to cover there requirements in the UK which is where LPS1277 comes in useful as this LPS standards covers what some insurers require. Broadly all three territories want reporting times, encryption and measure of reliability. All three standards (EN50131, AS22011.5 and

LPS1277v3) to varying degrees concentrate on the above. Any predictions for the future of security connectivity? The future is IP whether fixed or wireless that’s for sure. On fixed in the UK we are seeing the progressive roll out of fibre to the kerb or premises and businesses are now running on IP as standard. Communications is the hub of almost any business, so talk of IP being unreliable and new is quite frankly scaremongering and out of date. There are some challenges coming up on wireless. The move to 2G to 3G to 4G is being watched closely and installers should ask the question, is the device I am fitting today future-proofed as networks migrate to new technologies? If I am replacing a Digi with a 2G wireless device will I have to revisit in the future to upgrade to 3G or 4G? My final prediction is that as an industry we need to add “smarts” to our products and services as customer expectation increases year on year.

ANPR cameras for real-time management Knighthood International has launched its integrated Bearbox system incorporating ANPR direct from the camera. It combines all the camera and real-time processing functions into the unit so that access can be granted in realtime. he IQD52WV–B7 is from the IQinVision Alliance Mini Series of network cameras, which are available with 1.3, 2.0 or 3.0 Megapixel, ”CMOS sensors. Our test model was the mid-range unit offering a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and fitted with a 3-6mm varifocal lens. The compact camera unit is supplied with two cast aluminium trim rings in black and beige. Space inside the camera cover is at a premium but the manufacturer has squeezed in an SDHC memory card slot for edge recording and a connection for audio line out plus external microphone. Power for the camera is via PoE, there is no DC option. The Alliance Mini range of cameras, are ONVIF and PSIA compliant. Out of the box, the IQD52WV-B7 is supplied with the necessary fixings for direct mounting to wall or ceiling but various accessories are available for other mounting options (wall bracket, pendant etc.). Despite the small form factor, there is a reasonable space for the network connection to be made although this would most likely need to be removed in order to access the SDHC memory card slot. Cable entry is via the rear of the unit, there is no facility (knockout or conduit entry) on the cast aluminium cover trim for surface wiring options. The camera is supplied both with a hard copy of the installation manual and a CD with the necessary software tools. Having powered the camera via a PoE network switch, the network may be scanned using the IQfinder utility provided on the CD. This may of course be installed on a network PC but the utility will also run directly from the CD itself. The utility appeared to work even with completely different address ranges for the camera and PC. The camera comes set to DCHP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) as default but once identified via IQfinder, it’s possible to assign a new IP address, subnet and gateway from within the utility. The camera web page may also be accessed from the utility or directly from your native internet browser using the cameras IP address. The web page offers two choices, ‘live view ‘ and ‘setup’. As there is no analogue test output on the camera, lens adjustment can only be

completed once the camera is being viewed via the web page live view. All other settings are changed via the setup tab which is of course, password protected. From the live screen there are options to take a snapshot, video footage (.avi format) or to use the digital zoom facility, depending on the video stream being viewed ( H.264 or JPEG). The setup tab offers all the configuration functions you would expect and was clearly laid out with a help menu accessible section by section; providing descriptions for each setting. Three selectable image streams are offered using H.264 or JPEG, various frames rates, resolutions and bit rates. Despite its compact dimensions, the unit is a true day/night camera with moveable infrared cut filter and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range). Day/night switching may be automatic or may be manually set to colour or monochrome depending on the application. Image quality appeared to be good

The IQD52WV-B7 is certainly not ‘feature rich’ compared to some products but is easy to install despite its small form factor and appears to provide a good balance of image and build quality together with a pleasantly straightforward configuration setup. The lack of privacy masking is a potential drawback but overall we liked the unit.

UPGRADING AND UPDATING CCTV 2014 is thought to be a turning point for IP-based cameras as they are becoming so simple to install. Those that don’t embrace the latest technologies might find themselves left behind et’s get one thing clear from the off, a new CCTV install does not have to be IP. Increasingly we hear of new build shopping centres, hospitals, schools etc all having the latest IP surveillance equipment installed, but this is a different perspective to those jobs that are upgrades to existing technologies. Upgrading a system is quite different to fitting the latest, often bespoke, equipment from the off. There are a number of alternatives for those installers and customers who want to improve the performance of an underperforming surveillance system. As we have reported many times before the options for higher definition, analytics, remote access etc can include HD-SDI, IP and the use of encoders which take the analogue signal and digitise it for networking. Furthermore the latest analogue cameras aren’t exactly without their features, but in life upgrades usually mean changes. In general the market tends to forget all of the various options and discusses IP vs analogue as if these are the only choices. However there is the underlying fact that an old analogue closed circuit surveillance system will probably not be giving your clients the best results in today’s environment as there are so many other functions and features they are missing out on. Not that everybody definitely, without question needs to upgrade their CCTV. It’s horses for courses – if the client is happy with what they have in place and it serves the purpose they had it installed to do, then it can be left alone. But when they come to add new offices or change their security requirements the existing technology may well not even be available any longer, so a move to one of the newer alternatives will likely be the choice. In the past the newer option of IP cameras has met with a certain amount of head-scratching from the analogue minded installers and coupling that with the higher prices of the early systems, the anticipated rapid decline of analogue cameras did not happen (and has in many sectors still not happened). But nowadays the price of IP cameras has dropped with some manufacturers selling units for less than £100 and these are not reboxed webcams, they are good quality cameras.

Remember back to last year’s IFSEC and you’ll recall the glut of manufacturers launching almost identical looking ‘entry level’ cameras and many hoping that these lines would give IP the impetus it needed to finally kill off its predecessors and competition. Another aspect of the IP camera that has changed (as we have reported previously) is that the installation of these systems is not as complicated as it used to be; the technology genuinely is plug-and-play now. Many times press conferences have stalled while the presenter tries to locate and name ports to indicate the ‘ease’ of setting up the system. That is now all unnecessary thanks to the real plug-and-play systems from manufacturers who have recognised the need for simplification of the set-up. Some say that this technology is all well and good, but if you want an ‘all singing and dancing’ surveillance system you would need to fit something more involving, which in some applications may be true, but it is certainly not the case for all of the installations you will encounter. So ‘migration’ to IP (marketing speak alert) may not be the only option available to installers and their clients, but if an upgrade to a system with better quality images, analytic functionality and remote access via smartphones is required then some action will be needed to update an aged analogue install. system to do is the foremost consideration before specifying exactly which format of camera, DVR/NVR to go for. Of course there is also the recent explosion of interest in integrating CCTV into a system that also includes access control, fire, point-of-sale etc. For surveillance to fit into such a project it needs to have some networkability to it, so unsurprisingly IP cameras have tended to be the ones specified for the job. This may well be down to the fact that many IT integrators are now moving into the security sector and their knowledge of the CCTV is almost 100% IP based. It’s a different picture for the lower end domestic market. The cameras aimed at this sector tend to be anything from webcams to social media-linked cameras and a lot of them are distributed and manufactured by companies largely unknown on these shores. Try popping “plug and play IP cameras” into your search engine and see how many of the suppliers and manufacturers you’ve ever heard of before. And how many of these systems are over £50? Hardly any of them. This poses a bit of a problem to the installer because these basic systems are now so simple that anyone can fit them and with the development of Cloud storage, who needs a DVR either? Just buy a camera and pay a monthly subscription for some Cloud space and away you go. For a modern generation that includes a 13year old boy who built a nuclear fusion reactor, plugging an IP camera into the back of a router and navigating the video management software will not be a strenuous task. In general the image quality of these systems is not as good as that of the cameras that the readers of PSI would be fitting but if the customer isn’t too fussy about that and they just want a visual deterrent and a method of recording some basic footage, they’ll be fairly happy especially given the financial outlay; so this could be a revenue stream area that is in decline for the installer in the future. So let’s presume that your client has asked you to come in and look at their CCTV technology and have requested that you upgrade their analogue equipment to that new-fangled IP system. How do you proceed? We asked Sonia Blizzard of Beaming to suggest the consideration for an upgrade and why IP might be the popular choice:

Limitations of analogue Although it may appear easier and cheaper to stick to longstanding analogue products, it could prove to be costlier in the long run. Yes analogue is much more appealing from an installation perspective, as virtually any analogue CCTV camera can be plugged into any DVR – so literally CCTV is as simple as plugging and playing.

However, there are many limitations where analogue CCTV is concerned, namely the scalability and flexibility. Analogue CCTV is designed to be closed; therefore it’s hard wired and more difficult to scale and IP surveillance allows much more flexibility in this field.

Benefits of IP surveillance IP surveillance can also tackle much larger areas such as university campuses, multi-level buildings and multi-site retail stores. Resolution can also be much better.

Have your cake and eat it In an ideal world, we would like to see a simplified installation of devices and networks associated with IP surveillance so that we can have the best of what analogue and digital has to offer, and where switching over to digital from analogue can be a gradual, measured process. The best way to do this is through a private network which sits in between the Alarm Receiving Centre and the installer. Such solutions offer expertise and advice as well as a hand to hold for even the smallest installers to ensure that equipment is configured correctly each time every time and that end-to-end connectivity is signed off between the customer, installer and ARC or RVRC. It simplifies the installation of network security devices such as DVR and CCTV cameras as there is no complicated network or firewall configuration required, so it truly is plug and play. Installers, who have traditionally supplied analogue products, can start provisioning products using IP connectivity, confident that they are in the hands of experts.

The difference is clear So, when it comes to the IP vs analogue angle, it is tempting to stick to what you know and avoid unnecessary disruption. However, when the benefits clearly outweigh the disadvantages, plus add the fact that technology is constantly evolving towards IP surveillance, the appeal of converting has to be a pull. Especially when you consider that there are products out there which can help even the most reluctant installers to commit to IP.

Conclusion Regardless of a camera’s image quality claims, the video signal is only as good as the connectivity, and this is more than likely to impact on the clarity of the image that is transmitted by the camera. Consider this: A 1.3 megapixel IP camera is nearly four times the resolution of full D1 analogue. A 3 megapixel camera is over nine times the resolution of analogue. This provides so much more additional detail and becomes a much more attractive alternative to more traditional, analogue CCTV cameras for this reason Technology keeps moving on so the disparity between IP and analogue is increasing. The increased upload bandwidth from Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) broadband, where it is available, allows true high definition image quality at high 30

DON’T MYTH THE POINT! Steve Baker – Genie CCTV Myth: IP CCTV is somehow less reliable Those determined to show IP CCTV systems in a negative light normally hone in on reliability – something which is never a problem if the network is designed correctly. The doubters seem to believe that connecting devices together using IP poses inherent risks, but if such systems were that unreliable they wouldn’t be the core communication solution for every single global enterprise. The foundation stones for an IP network – whatever the application – must be redundancy and resilience. Good network design includes both. Information technology customers expect, as an absolute minimum, that their data is held securely in more than one location; and those implementing a security system should think likewise. Moreover, network design planning must consider the business needs of the customer and shouldn’t include too many unnecessary bells and whistles. Never overcomplicate the physical and logical design, as it can make it difficult to maintain. Modern technology products provide numerous options for creating resilient networks. Intelligent switches, RAID arrays, redundant power supplies and dual links are just some of the components to consider when setting out your design; and don’t make the mistake of forgetting about the network gateway as it also requires redundancy. A practical and well thought out design – with built-in expansion - will pay dividends in the future. IP delivers enormous benefits for the customer in scalability, storage costs and security management which far outweigh any perceived negatives – least of all the unfounded reliability myth.

Tony Whiting – Raytec Myth: My camera doesn’t need any light Throughout my 23 year career of designing, manufacturing and marketing professional lighting solutions to the global CCTV/surveillance market, there has always been the all too familiar claim from camera 32

manufacturers that their cameras do not require any additional lighting to work at night. Whilst many low light cameras are sensitive to light and can deliver acceptable images results in low light conditions, the fact remains that during the hours of darkness all cameras need light to see. There are many image enhancement techniques to amplify the brightness of a camera image. However, these can also amplify the noise, leading to poor image detail and increased demands on bandwidth and storage. There are some immutable laws of both physics and business that should always be considered when evaluating the night-time performance of any CCTV/surveillance system: 1. All cameras need light to provide a picture at night (excluding thermal cameras) 2. The better the quality of the lighting, the better the quality of the picture 3. Megapixel/HD cameras demand high quality lighting to work to their full potential 4. Lighting offers increased revenue opportunities for our industry whilst delivering better solutions to end users In addition, correctly designed lighting has the capability to help reduce bandwidth and storage requirements of an IP system, thereby saving costs. Visible lighting can also be used as a deterrent to actively reduce crime. In simple terms, all cameras deserve good lighting to ensure best performance.

Julie Kenny – Pyronix Myth: The security industry is not a place for a woman As the first woman director of the British Security Industry Association and having just completed 21 years as a Director, it is a myth that the security industry is not a place for a woman. I have worked in the security industry for 28 years and it has been pleasing to note a gradual change from what was a totally male dominated market, to one where women are playing an increasingly influential role; in 1998 I introduced the code of practice into the BSIA. During my time I have seen many influential women in senior positions on our boards, in our small and larger businesses, on the boards of our customers and, indeed, helping to shape the future of our industry. This change has been evidenced with the encouraging reading that more women were now included in the 40 top most influential people in the security and fire

industries which was compiled by IFSEC last year. I am a firm believer that the “Best (wo)Man” should get the job and with the appropriate ability; if you give 100 per cent; whatever gender or race you are; you should be rewarded. Research into the banking crisis highlighted that had more women been on the boards of those institutions, the banking crisis might not have been so profound because it is said that when women take places on boards they are more inclined to ask a question which may appear stupid, but in reality many would not know the answer. Women do not normally take their egos into the board room and, in many instances, would be difficult to persuade to support risky investments, in addition to their many other talents. I believe that these traits alone should see more women on the boards of our larger security companies. Additionally, any thriving industry needs to understand the views of its customer, so it stands to reason that where senior representation better reflects the diversity of the customer demographic, with no dilution in ability, can only be a good thing for our future success.

Stephen Green – The Security Institute Myth: Technology or humans can deliver security alone The biggest myth in security is revealed all too often in the sincerely-held convictions of my esteemed colleagues. From equipment suppliers, integrators and installers I hear that “Technology is a panacea”. From security managers I hear that “A good guard has an irreplaceable sixth sense for trouble”. These two views reflect the same tired myth. My background is somewhat unusual in the security Industry; I am not ex-forces or expolice. I am an engineer by trade and a security practitioner by design. My first degree was in electronic engineering, but my Masters was in Security Management. I spent the first half of an all too long career designing and implementing technical solutions to security problems I only loosely grasped. I have spent the second half persuading Security Managers that technology can work for, not against, them. I believe passionately that security works best as a true sociotechnical system; when technology is used sensitively in support of human and organisational processes. Welldesigned technology can enhance the innate skills of security practitioners, providing tools which make their life easier, which reduce stress and aid effective decision-making. Badly

designed and implemented technology is at best inefficient, most often ignored, and at worse downright misleading. So I would appeal to my fellow practitioners – please give each other a fighting chance. Engineers, please try to understand what the guys on the ground really need to do their job and stop force-feeding us the latest gadgets. Security managers, please try to understand that evolution happens, and that the geeks with the wiggly amps can often help you achieve your aims. Security is definitely one example of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.

Steve Kimber – Southern Monitoring & FSA

Myth: The start-up requirements to become a security installer are a ‘basic toolkit and a ladder’ The truth is that the security industry is one of the most highly regulated outside of nuclear power, and you need far more than simple kit. For a start you need certification; however, you can’t achieve this – or any formal recognition – unless you have been trading for two years. So, for the first two years, you can only install audible-only systems that are not an insurance requirement, are very low cost and carry slim margins. Once you have done your two years, obtaining your certification by SSAIB or NSI is costly, as are ongoing surveillance fees. To get ISO 9000 Quality Assurance is even more expensive. But at least now you will be recognised by police forces and insurers, so you can install remote signalling systems with police response for an insurance need. But it doesn’t stop there; you have to provide an out of hours breakdown service for attendance within four hours 24/7 and have sufficient resources to maintain your systems once or twice a year. All of your staff have to be CRB checked and there’s a plethora of employment and health and safety legislation and insurance to comply with. Then there’s the tendering process and the need to complete Pre-Qualification Questionnaires (PQQs) and the requirement to join CHAS and the like, along with the need for ECS cards to prove health and safety competence on site. Did I mention you’ll need an office area, vehicles, several trade accounts and an understanding bank manager when the cash flow tightens due to large contracts paying beyond their credit terms? In the meantime, margins are constantly being eroded and winning work gets harder and harder. Then on top of all of that, along comes

Adam Stroud Paxton Myth: The adoption of cutting edge technology necessarily leads to more complicated products. We would only consider the adoption of a new technology in order to make a product better or simpler for the customer. We always have the benefit in mind sometimes that is just making installation easier. Often, a new technology is adopted by manufacturers as a badge of honour, but doesn’t provide significant benefit. IPv6 is an example of a highly beneficial technology. It drastically reduces the amount of configuration that an installation company has to go through. No setting DNS servers, no static IP address or subnet mask, just plug it in and it works. The development process to deliver this solution may be more complicated, but you end up with a better, more mature product.

Over the years I’ve been working in the security industry I’ve heard and read about a good deal of myths, ranging from technical issues and equipment claims through to compliance matters and certification topics. On the technical side, for example, in the early days of microwave movement detectors there was a proliferation of assertions that ‘this detector is so sensitive it will detect a fly in the room’. They certainly did, along with lots of other types of insects, water in downpipes and even passing buses! Then there was the misguided myth of applying mains voltage to tube and wire frames or lace wiring detection circuits in order to repair or identify the location of an intermittent fault. I’m not sure if would have been effective, but it would certainly have been extremely dangerous. Next up were some pet immune detectors that were discovered not to be as immune to certain pets (large ones or others that could get near the detectors) as their manufacturers had previously claimed. Nevertheless, these types of detectors can be successfully used in the right circumstances. Finally, and more recently, we had the myth about CCTV cameras that could produce acceptable images, without additional lighting, on a dark and foggy night… But leaving these product/performance points aside, I believe the biggest myth relates to the subject of standards in the security industry. It’s a myth that standards are designed to be a bureaucratic and costly hurdle for installers to try and avoid wherever possible. Standards do need to be practical and focused and there is a strong argument in favour of pan-European testing regimes to correct the longwinded approval process that hinders manufacturers by comparison with the US market. This is a tangible problem that CertAlarm is trying hard to address. But in my view it’s a myth that security standards are bad per se. There’s more work to do in this area, but standards are the key to unlocking product innovation and serving customers who ultimately fund the industry through their purchasing decisions. the Security Industry Authority to see if they can sweep you up in statutory regulation, with the associated licensing fees. After all that, you decide to expand into fire systems… the legislation never stops!

Dave Mundy – Delta Security Myth: Properties with excellent security installed advertise to criminals that they contain items worth stealing By far the biggest myth in the security industry is that by installing a top-quality security system, you are advertising that you have something worth stealing and are therefore attracting thieves. In fact, people with excellent security systems are 90 percent less likely to be victims of theft. The reason for this is simple; it is easy to deter the type of criminal who chooses to break into homes, offices and public buildings, instead of choosing the more meticulously-planned route of targeting jewellers, banks and other high-asset properties. This type of criminal is looking for an easy win, rather than seeking out

the biggest rewards. Good-quality physical and electronic security is proven to act as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour and theft, put simply, because it makes the job of breaking in harder and of getting caught more likely. As well as CCTV, robust doors and windows, secure access control systems, electric gates and barriers and intruder alarms are all good ways of ensuring thieves look elsewhere for their next opportunity. Police advertisements emphasising the importance of locking doors and windows are common-place, and obviously this is an important first step, but these adverts should go further and advise that good quality, robust security systems are a no brainer; they are an investment that will make you 90 percent more able to protect your property and the occupants within it.

Brian Song – IDIS Myth 1: IP and HD surveillance is too expensive While this might be true of early systems, IP surveillance should not be expensive and, more importantly, it should quite clearly offer return-on-investment through tangible benefits and operational efficiencies. For instance, saving time retrieving footage or the ability to remotely manage or monitor security from hand held devices, or remote maintenance versus a man in a van. The benefits of HD should be a quick win, especially for businesses that face an increasing level of theft and where legacy analogue is simply not detecting suspicious behaviour. IP surveillance also provides the flexibility to integrate with third-party systems and grow with a user’s business. Installers should look to their manufacturers to help them build this type of strong business case rather than just looking at a price tag. Myth 2: IP is complicated and not secure IP surveillance is really as complicated as the system an end user or installer selects. Some vendors insist on lengthy training and require engineers to have IT and network experience as a prerequisite, so the perception, and often the reality, is complexity. There is a preconception that all footage stored in an IT environment is vulnerable and that IP cameras can be accessed and controlled by anyone with an internet connection. With real-life examples of people using IP addresses to live view cameras half way around the world, it’s no wonder there is some concern.

In a world in which wireless communications is becoming the norm rather than the exception, the security sector is no different… he intruder alarm market has evolved quite a lot since the technology was first installed, although in essence much of the thought behind the systems remains the same; a panel and triggers such as PIRs or magnetic/vibration sensors. The improvements that manufacturers have made to the technology over the years have resulted in fewer false alarms than ever before (see Encouraging Stats on p5) but the trends of the consumer market and the development of flexible, efficient wireless systems have had their effect on the whole security sector, including alarms, CCTV and fire. Wireless is now an established technology and one that is taking the installer into new places and in new directions. According to Daniel Wan of Honeywell there are three key features that have developed and are driving the popularity of wireless security systems: remote monitoring, customisable installation/features and integration with existing home automation tools. “Remote monitoring enables homeowners to control all aspects of their home security system from the comfort of their smartphone or tablet, an easy and practical option that provides peace of mind at all times,” says Daniel. “Easy to install wireless sensors offer a great deal of opportunity for customisation as systems can be upgraded and adapted without the need for re-wiring. Finally the integration with existing systems, such as lighting, garage doors and heating provide a complete home solution.” These three key features, along with the other benefits offered by the new generation of security solutions, are leading people to consider a wireless solution for their homes.

GOING WIRELESS?

Wiring Wired intruder alarms are well established in the UK so why would you suggest an alternative to your customer? Essentially, the advantages of wireless security are more than simply the lack of fiddly wiring and it remains a common sense installation regardless of whether or not wiring is already in place. “The installer should typically be looking to fit the most cost-effective system for the job in hand and it may be that a wired alarm system is the best solution as long as the use of existing wiring doesn’t lead to a compromise in system design,” explains Gary Frith of Videofied. “A wireless solution would provide more flexibility as a building changes over time, e.g. adding on a detector for a new conservatory, moving detectors as part of an office conversion, etc. Another advantage of wireless security is of course that wires can’t be cut to disable the system and some wireless systems are now completely wire-free and don’t even need a

phone line or Ethernet connection (or can have GPRS or 3G communication as a back-up).” The level of protection offered by wireless systems complements that of their wired counterparts. This is partly due to the fact that wireless solutions can secure a wider geographical area as they can be more flexibly installed and placed in any location of a property. Wired security devices on the other hand are dependent upon cabling opportunities which can be thwarted by the architecture and design of a property, possibly leaving certain areas unprotected. Implementing a wireless solution can therefore be used to reinforce an existing wired one to expand the coverage area for maximum security. “Not only is security enhanced due to the flexibility of wireless systems but also due to their inherent reliability,” says Daniel. “Firstly, it is worth noting that as devices independent of electricity, they are not affected by power disruptions caused by power cuts or building work for example. Secondly, the advanced radio technology means that suspected faults within the system are picked up extremely quickly and the user alerted to them, leaving no property unprotected for long periods of time.” Wireless systems can therefore be used to bolster the security offered by a wired system already in place.

Due to the ease of installation of wireless alarms, you can now pick up domestic wireless security systems at high street retailers (such as Tesco, Maplin) and online (Amazon, Play) selling at lowcosts. Might this lead wireless technology to be seen as lower quality than wired especially as these tend to cost more due to the inclusion of the wiring in the box? “For the domestic environment I would look at

this the other way round,” says Gary. “Consumers are now so used to wireless technology in the home that they could view wired home alarms systems as yesterday’s technology.” Which is true because wireless systems in 2014 are much more user/installer friendly than those of twenty years ago so why indeed would a homeowner be taking on the challenge of fixing wiring when the modern wireless system is equally as reliable? Especially as much of their domestic connectivity is wireless. In addition, that wireless systems are available at a low-cost from certain outlets should really have no bearing on the overall perception of quality as Daniel Wan explains: “These low-cost wireless solutions differ from traditional systems in that they have removed the need for a third party to install them, inevitably lessening the overall cost dramatically. While this might be more cost effective, the DIY approach leaves a larger margin for human error when installing the system which could lead to its poor performance. Customers should also be aware that while these security systems provide a costeffective solution they will not offer the same features and quality of a custom security system installed by a trained professional.”

Standards

The proliferation of wireless technology and our readiness to adopt it across our everyday lives suggests a wireless future for most technologies 38

The intruder alarm market is beset with industry standards while the CCTV market is fairly free of regulation. Are there any standards that installers should look for when specifying wireless security? There is no straightforward answer to this though there certainly should be. “In Europe there are multiple levels of approval that manufacturers must go through before their product can reach the consumer,” explains Daniel Wan. “One such level in the approval process is the requirement that wireless products meet the standards produced by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) which number in the thousands. “While the multiple layers in the approval process may appear a rigorous means to effectively ensure quality, it can conversely exert the opposite effect. The long approval process leads to long delays in products reaching the market, which can stifle the pace at which new and improved products can reach users. “A uniform Pan European set of industry standards is required which will ensure the availability of high quality products on the market without the time lag,” he continues. “Until this has been introduced, installers must ensure that the wireless security system they employ meets the many standards that now exist, ranging from those produced by ETSI to those issued by Trading Standards and the

British Security Industry Association.”

Smartphones and security IFSEC this year will probably be dominated by companies offering remote security solutions. The ability to check and set alarms using a phone/tablet is the overriding trend that manufacturers are pushing forward at the moment. Offering such a service can bring the installer repeat revenue (with a monthly fee for access) but there does exists some scepticism among installers (as reported to me during the NSI Installer Summit) as to whether this remote access feature is something that their customers will actually use once they have it. “I think the jury is still out on remote security via smartphones,” reveals Gary Frith. “For commercial applications we certainly see professional monitoring as the way to go. We do, however, see an opportunity for self-monitoring in the current “bells only” residential market. From our point of view we would clearly see added-value in the homeowner receiving a video clip of an intrusion rather than just a text or email to inform them that their alarm system has activated.” The use of the smartphone/tablet has become so widespread that remote access could be a product that customers will expect due to advances in mobile and app technology. It is now presumed that industries will take advantage of the personal mobility and flexibility offered by mobile technology and the security industry option is remote security. “Remote security allows homeowners to manage and monitor their system remotely using a familiar and convenient interface, their smartphones,” says Daniel. “Users of services such as Honeywell’s Total Connect Remote Services can remotely arm, disarm and check on their security system via their mobile device, wherever they are. This remote access is so extensive it even enables users to view live video of their property, an extremely useful feature for the homeowner with unattended pets or children at home for example. Real-time alerts also keep the user informed on any important events such as a child arriving home through e-mails, video, or text messaging.” The proliferation of wireless technology and our readiness to adopt it across our everyday lives suggests a wireless future for most technologies. This is driven by the many benefits wireless presents users. In the realm of security solutions itself, the advantages of the wireless approach are numerous, including its flexibility, reliability and cost-effectiveness. Despite this, wired security systems still have their place in the current ecosystem. “The traditional system continues to present homeowners with many benefits that cannot be overlooked,” concludes Daniel Wan. “It is not quite time to pull the plug on wired devices but instead offer them a powerful ally in wireless.”

Why is the choice of DVR hard drive of importance to security systems installers? Not all HDDs are the same, choosing the right drive for the right application is very important

and will lead to a better user experience and lower cost of ownership. HDD reliability should be carefully considered by security system installers. If a drive fails then the customer may not be able to retrieve and review the video footage, which is critical in surveillance systems. Upgrading access control et2 v5 is a redesign of the Net2 software, which the company says, offers a fresh look and feel and includes important new features directly requested by UK security installers. The new landlord tenant feature offers interdepartmental privacy, with the ability to enable partitioning of the Net2 system, giving operators access to specific departments only. This is ideal for sites that want the option for individual departments to only view their own staff information and access levels in the software. Installers can show their customers how to create a one-off time period in Net2 software for special events and occasions, with the custom days feature. This will make security at events like parents’ evenings stress-free, as users can now modify access permissions in Net2 in advance of the event. Temporary access permissions can be set in the software, making it easy for sites that employ shift workers or contractors to allow short-term access to a door for a specific period of time. Net2 v5 also offers improved integration with Net2 Entry, Paxton’s IP door entry system. Customers can streamline their door entry and access control system by turning on a lobby light or air conditioning when a user or visitor is granted access. For extra convenience, customers can now also set their intruder alarm via the Net2 Entry panel as they enter or leave a building. In addition to these features, Net2 v5 software offers triggers and actions options, improved door control and turnstile mode, a feature with a single door controller operating a two way turnstile. As with all Net2 access control installations, upgrades to the software are free of charge with no additional licence fees for adding the system to multiple workstations.

Asking installers what they want must throw up a lot of variables. How did you arrive at choosing the enhancements you did? When we get feedback from the field, the first thing we can do is consolidate it to make sure we are looking at a refined list, secondly, quite often the feedback comes in as a proposed solution to a problem. It’s important for us to work backwards from a solution, understand what the root issue is, and then work out the best way of using technology to solve that problem. It may be the original feature request or it could be something slightly different. Net2 is a highly refined product with a broad feature set, there were gaps however, and in version 5 we are happy that we have addressed those.

Why did you decide to offer the upgrades for free? It’s part of our philosophy as a company. We look to reward a customer’s investment in a Paxton system with continued development providing additional features and benefits. In addition, simplicity and clarity mean a lot to us and we would not want to introduce cumbersome procedures associated with charging for upgrades.

Adding flexibility usually means making things more complicated, how have you overcome this? It’s something that we spend a lot of time over. We have a rule which is, if by adding a ‘niche’ feature, it makes life more complicated for the majority of our customers, then we just won’t do it. We would rather not do it than compromise one of our core assets, which is simplicity and usability of our system. Usually we can implement a feature in such a way that it doesn’t disturb those users who aren’t using it.

Are you now working on v6? We have significant engineering capability and are always working on several projects concurrently. The next twelve months will be an exciting time for Paxton. Standard life Here Adrian Mealing, Chairman BSIA Equipment Manufacturers Section, reveals why you should care about standards tandards are present in every part of our life, and come in many different forms. Standards are developed for different reasons, whether it be to protect the consumer, or to make life simple for both the consumer and manufacturer. Take the audio & visual industry as a classic example of how standardisation has helped manufacturers, installers and end users. As technology has developed, the AV industry has kept up by agreeing standard formats for all cable connections. If you buy a Panasonic TV you don't have to buy a Panasonic DVD player to work with it. The cables required are of a standard format, used the world over and understood by everybody. Electrical safety standards protect lives and give consumers confidence in the products they are purchasing. Fire standards ensure that when required a product will function as expected, and are mandatory. Now I don't expect the security industry to adopt the thinking of the AV industry anytime soon; After all manufacturers want to sell a complete suite of products. But what if manufacturers did agree on a common communication protocol? The installer and end user would potentially have a much wider choice of product selection. Manufacturers would be able to compete on features and functionality rather than leading a race to the bottom on price, for a product and service that actually has significant value. The BSIA developed such a protocol called CP249, which would allow manufacturers to develop a bus-based system that would allow interoperability between many types of device. Take up has been slow, probably for the reasons mentioned. There are many standards that govern the security industry, some would argue too many; However without them our industry would certainly be in a worse state. How would the industry have helped cut the significant false alarm problem that existed some years ago without a standardised method of work that was understood by all. How could an installer choose the correct type of equipment pertinent to the risk, without standards? Standardisation has had a positive effect on our industry, and whilst I welcome all that has been achieved to date, one thing is missing. Independent testing and certification should be mandatory for products used in professionally installed systems. It is too easy for manufacturers to simply claim compliance. The whole industry could raise its game in the eye of the end user by promoting compliance and differentiating us from the products available in the DIY arena. After all without this how can the end user make an informed choice? It is far too easy for the end user to compare apples with oranges, when the industry has the ability to make a difference. Alarm systems may only protect property and not life, and some may argue that testing and certification is a step too far, however anybody who has suffered a burglary or property damage will know how devastating this can be. Without testing and certification, we are only realising a small portion of the benefits standards bring. Next month: Remote maintenance - enhanced service or a cost cutting exercise?

Flat screen range for 24/7 surveillance Grundig’s new, Full HD, flat-screen monitor range has been designed for professional, 24/7 surveillance applications. The monitors include two HDMI ports. Self-Managed Switch with Gbps Uplink ComNet Europe has introduced a six-port Self-Managed Ethernet switch, the CNGE2FE4SMS. The switch has four copper TX ports and two Gigabit SFP Ethernet ports. This allows the Ethernet data from the four TX ports be combined and uplinked through the Gbps SFP port and multiple CNGE2FE4SMS units to be daisy-chained together through the gigabit backbone. It can support a large number of IP cameras depending on the selected camera’s bit rate. The Gigabit uplink capability can handle a larger number of cameras as compared to the company’s other SMS products. The self-management feature requires no user intervention and is preprogrammed to avoid flooding the network. The CNGE2FE4SMS offers management without the cost or user knowledge required for a managed switch. This port-configured Ethernet switch allows the user to create a virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) that manages the Ethernet data being transported, thereby preventing network flooding. The CNGE2FE4SMS is preprogrammed and meets the IEEE 802.1x VLAN management standard. The two optical ports are designed to forward the data from the four electrical ports to the next switch, to a PC, or another Ethernet connection. EN54-3 and EN54-23 approved AV range KAC Alarm Company has developed ENscape, a range of EN54-3 and EN54-23 approved conventional AV warning devices for use in fire detection systems. With electronics and optics providing high light output at low current draw, ENscape beacons and sounder beacons minimise the overall number of devices required. The sounder-only devices are approved to EN54-3 with a global tone set of 32 tones, and flexible alarm settings allow for phased evacuation. ENscape beacons provide building occupants, particularly the hearing impaired, improved warning of fire alarm or evacuation conditions, whilst increasing safety in areas where high ambient noise levels render sounders ineffective. Locks allows temporary access Codelocks has enhanced its KitLock 1000 cabinet locks to enable cabinet owners to grant temporary access to their cabinets by using time-sensitive access codes. NetCode is a new web-based application that gives managers the ability to grant temporary access codes to a remote location, so an authorised engineer or customer can access their equipment unaccompanied. The application is particularly useful where access is required for routine servicing or one-off maintenance purposes, for example, where service engineers might visit many different locations in one day. Using the application, a field service manager (FSM) can generate time-sensitive codes for the engineer to gain access to the locked cabinets. The code can be sent via an SMS text message or by email to the engineer’s mobile on the day the access is required. Using time-sensitive access codes is a more secure way to grant access, as the code will not work outside a designated timeslot. Connections Hello again, In the words of Max Bygraves “let me tell you a story”... 42 years ago the electronic security industry thought it would be good for consumers if there was an independent inspection regime, 40 years on there are now two UKAS accredited bodies NSI and SSAIB who inspect installers, ARC’s and RVRC’s to British and European technical Standards as well as ISO 9000 Quality Assurance Standards. 20 years ago along came the first ACPO policy which required CRB checks of employees and the required the electronic security industry to be inspected by a UKAS accredited body to get police response to an alarm system. So for 40 years we have ensured the highest standards prevail in our sector and then some 8 years ago a quango called the Security Industry Authority (SIA) was born on the back of the Private Security Industry Act, an Act that was designed primarily to regulate a sector of the industry that until then had been unregulated and had been subject to some pretty bad press, namely the guarding sector, wheel clampers and door supervisors. So you imagine the surprise of ARC’s and RVRC’s when they were told they had to comply with the new regulation and license their staff to irrelevant training modules and this has been a bone of contention ever since. After all, we were already inspected to a higher standard than SIA regulation requires, in our case by NSI. Next the SIA decide that those businesses that employ licensed staff now have to be licensed themselves, you can imagine the disgust that ensued as our industry is subjected to more micromanagement, the costs of which all get passed to the consumer and they get no additional benefits at all, as the electronic security industry has never been found wanting in serving the consumer. Not surprisingly the application forms for business licensing only referenced standards that were relevant to the guarding sector and none of the standards ARCs and RVRC’s are inspected to. Now it could be said that the SIA couldn’t organise a p**s up in a brewery as they were late in originally launching regulation, they’ve also delayed registration for business licensing and now, wait for it... after 40 years they’ve decided the electronic security industry are actually guards so we meet the business licensing criteria! This assertion is based on their opinion that an aspect of an ARC or RVRC’s operator function is tantamount to performing a guarding activity. So now a guarding license is required which is even less relevant than the public space surveillance license that has been adopted in the ARC / RVRC community.

Vandal-resistant HD IP camera The DDF4820HDV-DN from Dallmeier is a HD network camera built into a vandal-resistant (IK10) dome enclosure. Samsung Techwin has launched a 960H camera series with a list of features including Simple Focus, which can help reduce installation costs by minimising the time it takes to commission the cameras. The two domes (SCD-3083/SCV-3083) and box camera (SCB-3003) in the 960H series are equipped with Samsung Techwin’s Wide Dynamic Range feature which reportedly compensates for backlight 128 times more effectively than standard WDR. This together with Samsung Super Dynamic Range (SSDR), which automatically adjusts dark areas of an image and Samsung Super Noise Reduction (SSNRIII), ensures images can be obtained in challenging environments including when the light may be as low as 0.1 lux. The new models also utilise Progressive Scan to optimise the high quality video capture of moving objects, making it possible, for example, to read car number plates without a motion blur effect. A single push of a button located at the back of the camera automatically focuses the camera via the Simple Focus feature which can also be remotely accessed via a coaxial control enabled DVR. A pub with spirits Quite a number of the videos we have highlighted on this page over the years have been claiming to show the proof of the existence of ghosts. CCTV does its job This shocking footage shows how valuable CCTV can really be as it catches an attempted murder in southern China as a man stuffs his girlfriend down a manhole in an attempt to escape a gambling debt, according to an AP report. The footage shows the unidentified man removing a manhole cover and replacing it with a piece of cardboard. He’s next shown running through the rain with his girlfriend toward the trap he had laid for her. Fortunately she survived the attack and the assailant was caught and charged.

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Where wolf? This CCTV footage is purported to show a werewolf roaming a garden in Brazil. The 44-second clip emerged after a spate of sightings in the town of São Gonçalo de Campos, near Feira de Santana. The mysterious lupine was first spotted by a local man known only as Pingo. At first people apparently made fun of him but others have since had similar encounters with the beast. The dangers of sat-nav Early on the morning of 25th February 2014 Surrey Police were alerted to a man on the M25 motorway cycling on the hard shoulder of the clockwise carriageway between junctions 10 and 11 going towards junction 12 for the M3. Responding officer Sergeant Phil Dix said: “The cyclist was apparently taking a short cut home and was following a satellite navigation system on his mobile phone. Keith Newton SilverNet has announced an expansion of its sales team with the appointment of Keith Newton as Business Development Manager. Keith will be working with consultants, installers, system integrators and distributors to identify new opportunities for SilverNet’s range of wireless networking solutions. Keith, who immediately prior to joining SilverNet was Sales Engagement Manager for Ericsson, was previously a sales engineer for six years for BelAir Networks. Managing Director Chris Ballard said: “Keith’s extensive knowledge of transmission issues will be of immense value to us as we look to provide project support to installers who are competing for new business, as well as providing their existing clients with a cost-effective alternative to the traditional cabling methods or the use of leased lines.”

Richard Moore Essentra Security has appointed Richard Moore as its UK Director of Sales. The Security Institute has announced that David Thorp has been appointed to the newly-created role of Managing Director. David holds a BA in Law and an MSc in Training and Performance Management and most recently he was Director of Research & Professional Development at The Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Member of the British Institute of Learning and Development. Commenting on his new role, David said: “I feel both delighted and privileged to have been appointed Managing Director of the Security Institute. Howard Mann Securahomes has appointed Howard Mann as the company’s new Operations Manager. Based in Eccleshill, Howard will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and developing the company’s sales, marketing and customer services initiatives. Howard will also be responsible for the firm’s internal research and development programme, as well as helping to launch the company’s latest products introductions, which include its new wireless telecare range and its two-way voice monitoring burglar alarms. John Downie Visual Management Systems has announced the appointment of John Downie as its new Sales Director, a move that follows on from company growth in recent years and strategic plans for the future in the UK and overseas.
