Pioneering risks Does being first to market mean you are first to succeed? ou will all remember a range of technologies and the early adopters who proudly showed off their digital watch, calculator, Walkman (CD or tape), laser disc, Minidisc etc. And while the proud owner usually received some materialistic pride, what they often ended up with was a product that fell by the wayside. Go back to early digital watches, for example. The first ones were all-black discs that you pressed a button to illuminate the time, which was ok but it meant you needed both hands free to see what the time was. Also pressing the button for too long drained the battery. The next wave of digital watches were better, with LCD display always showing the time, but you couldn’t see them in the dark. So a light was needed, which also drained the battery. Today I don’t know anyone who has a digital watch apart from people in ‘R&D’. The point is, the first wave of technology is quite often launched ahead of time as the manufacturers wanted to be the first to market. Some systems have evolved such as vinyl to CD to downloads while other technologies that came out at the same time as others simply lost the battle; Minidiscs lost to mp3 players, laser discs lost out to DVDs, HD discs lost to Blu-Ray and so on. Despite all of these lessons we still love a new piece of kit, just look at all of the fuss surrounding smartwatches recently. Who will be the first to market seems to be the overriding question rather than which one is actually going to be any good. No point being the first one on the shelves if your battery needs charging every day or if there is a software security problem, but some people really want one anyway. We have seen early adopters in our own sector suffer from similar problems. Anyone who tried the first wireless systems or biometrics will have been put off the technology for some time. It took subsequent developments to make these systems what they are today. At the moment there is some attention being given to 4K surveillance cameras with all of the big players announcing new launches boasting super definitions. There is a feeling that this may be a tad early for the still analogue–friendly UK market. 4K will definitely happen in a big way one day, but probably not yet. Why you ask? Two reasons. Before anyone starts boasting about supplying their customers with 4K CCTV remember that it’s not just a case of changing the cameras, you need to upgrade the infrastructure of the system too. They will need more storage, better screens and a network that can handle all of the data. That means a step up to 4K will be a bigger investment than the cost of a camera. The other major driver will be the domestic television market. 4K is now the pinnacle of home cinema (according to the TV salesmen who confuse 4K with UHD) but in reality it does not exist – no broadcaster transmits anything in 4K. Once they do of course, expect interest in 4K surveillance to increase just as it did with HD at home. The confusion between 4K and UHD does not help either. Market drivers combined with the tribulations of early adopters are what gives us second generation systems (often with lower prices) and ultimately then is the time we buy. This is why the customer often defines the successful technology trends, not the manufacturers who are first to market.

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M
The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Joel Mulloy, Group Director at Abel Alarm Company. Abel operates nationally with 13 branches across the whole of the UK.
Ready to show us your installer skills? Are you good enough to compete against your peers for the chance to win cash prizes, industry recognition, and potential credits towards your level 2 or 3 NVQ portfolio? Engineers of Tomorrow, the UK Apprentice and Young Engineers Competition 2015 will celebrate its 17th year at IFSEC International 2015 in June. At the heart of the installation apprentice and young engineer industry, the competition will provide participants with a global stage to compete against their peers and represent their company. Competitors will undertake a 90-minute assessment, reviewing a previously installed intruder alarm system, identifying the faults, re-commissioning the system and finishing with any additional security and safety measures. Each entrant is marked by a panel of judges from the security inspectorates, training and commercial organisations, and points are allocated based on performance in the various disciplines. Engineers of Tomorrow 2015 is supported by CSL Dualcom, Skills for Security, NSI and SSAIB. For more details visit www.ifsec.co.uk
Redvision moves to larger premises Redvision CCTV has relocated to larger premises in Blacknest, Nr Farnham in Surrey to accommodate growth. The new facility provides improved capacity for the new X-Series range of rugged IP HD PTZ cameras and Redcop mobile CCTV Towers. Glenn Waterfall, sales director comments: “The new offices and manufacturing facility will help us underpin the still very strong analogue market whilst provide us with a solid platform to further develop and sell our IP offering in the UK and overseas markets. Redcop rapid deployment CCTV towers are now starting to gain traction in the rental market and being able to accommodate both operations under one roof is extremely beneficial.”
Abel is one of the most established NSI approved installation companies in the UK, how does this benefit customers? Trust is everything in the Security Industry. Customers have to feel assured that their lives and property are in safe hands. With a legacy spanning six decades, Abel Group has the experience and expertise to deal with everything from a simple alarm installation to a full commercial integrated system. Our NSI approval status complements and endorses our credentials to our customers. Their Gold standard and quality management system provides our business with a trusted framework. What are the greatest challenges for a national alarm company in today’s market? Managing change. We’re at a point where technology is evolving very quickly. The Security Industry needs to be sure to fight its corner otherwise we may find IT and Electrical companies taking market share. The Security Sector is risk adverse and highly regulated with a huge list of complex standards. Other business sectors may find it easier to bolt-on security services to their offerings. I think it is important we work alongside other partners, such as members within the ECA, to ensure the customer has a correctly installed and designed security system which adheres to ever-evolving standards. What are your views on diversification for the Abel Group? Abel has always been successful in market verticals and is always keen to embrace new technology. We have been offering system integration services for the past few years. We installed our first biometric door entry system five years ago and we are now in our 4th year of installing IPCCTV systems. We have invested significantly in our ICT knowledge and developed a very successful apprentice and graduate recruitment scheme. Working with the supply chain to bring in new products not only helps move our business into other profitable sectors of the installation and service market but enhances our customers’ experience as well. What are the next steps for Abel as you approach your 50th year of trading? It’s a huge milestone for Abel. We are the only national alarm company in the UK that is family-run. This legacy will be the foundation for a period of intensive growth as we step into the next 50 years. We know there will be significant challenges to overcome and the UK economy is still vulnerable to outside influences both in Europe and further afield. This can impact growth and confidence within the construction sector and wider business community. With the combination of our experience and enthusiastic new recruits, we look forward to the next 50 years with excitement.

Elephant proof. Our cameras are much tougher than they look. That’s because we don’t just give them a few strikes during testing, as you might expect. Instead, we subject them to about 30 heavy strikes – directly on their weakest spots. Don’t worry though, we keep them away from elephants. It’s just one of the tough tests Axis cameras face, so you can be sure you’ll always get the best image quality and high performance – no matter what’s thrown at them.

Revising the Standard SI has fully revised the standard which ensures that the integrity and effectiveness of an installed CCTV system is not compromised. BS 8418 Installation and remote monitoring of detector-activated CCTV systems – Code of practice supersedes the 2010 standard, which provided a quality platform for detector operated CCTV system that is expected to be recognized by Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) as part of their security systems policy for police response. The revised standard ensures that the installed CCTV system provides the image output at the monitoring centre that is stated in the Operational Requirement (OR), to ensure the needs of the customer are met. Detector-activated CCTV systems are seen as an effective tool in the prevention and detection of crime, which provide visually confirmed images of incidents as they progress. They can provide value added features such as their use being part of a safety management process when not performing the security function. When a detector senses activity the system transmits the images to a Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC) where they can be evaluated by an operator. These images can be viewed and a request can be made to an emergency response if there is visual evidence showing unauthorised access to the secure area and/or actual criminal activity. Therefore it is essential that the resilience and quality of the CCTV system is high and they are maintained at all times. BS 8418 has been revised to work in accordance with the principles of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner role which was created under the Protections Freedoms Act 2012. It also works with the 2013 Surveillance Camera Code of Practice which gives twelve guiding principles to create a framework reassuring the public that CCTV systems will be used to protect and support communities rather than spy on them.
B
The standard for police response from a CCTV sourced alarm, BS 8418, has been revised. Here we look at the changes
Changes
BS 8418 has been revised to work in accordance with the principles of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner role which was created under the Protections Freedoms Act 2012 12
According to the new BS 8418 Standard the principle changes included in the new document are listed as: • The need to carry out a threat assessment and risk analysis and produce an Operational Requirement document to reflect the requirements of BS IEC 62676-4 has been included. This risk assessment should be prior to CCTV system design and to assist in understanding the purpose of the system. • Clarified the use of portable/mobile systems within the standard in that they should also follow the guides for fixed systems.
• Relaxed some of the tamper recommendations and provided a tamper protection/indication table to add clarity to the requirements. • Included a fault recognition/indication table to provide clarity to the recommendations. • Decreased the number of event memory recommendations. • The need for an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is now determined by threat analysis and risk assessment. • Signalled the need for a minimum of one data transmission path. Further paths determined by threat analysis and risk assessment. For the installer there are plenty of guidelines in the document covering various stages of the process. For example, there are guides on the fitting of cabling for power and signalling purposes to basically ensure they are suitable for the application, labelled correctly and fixed/protected as required. Detectors should be fitted as per the manufacturer’s instructions and in the suitable position and configuration for the application. Other aspects of a CCTV installation covered in the document include lighting, field of view, analytics, PIRs and infra-red. The exchange of information between the installer and the RVR is also discussed along with the commissioning and activation processes and the responsibilities of all parties. It is worth noting that the code of practice should not be quoted as if it were a specification and particular care should be taken to ensure that claims of compliance are not misleading. As a guide and list of recommendations it is invaluable. Anne Hayes Head of Market Development for Governance & Risk at BSI said: “The benefits of using BS 8418 are clear. It bridges the gap between CCTV installation standards and monitoring standards, and therefore ensures that the installed detector activated CCTV systems fulfil the user’s operational requirements in the images produced at the monitoring centre. This means that CCTV systems installed and monitored in accordance with this standard are capable of obtaining a response to a confirmed incident from the police (or other responding authority). In a time where strong vigilance and governance are key, BS 8418 adds the reassurance society needs.”

INTERVIEW
A focus on the future This month we talk to Mark Pritchard, Director of Marketing for EMEA at Pelco by Schneider Electric, about the industry today and how a camera manufacturer goes about expanding its product portfolio ark Pritchard joined Pelco by Schneider Electric in March 2014, with many years’ experience behind him having held technical and sales roles in North America, Australia, South Africa and mainland Europe. Prior to joining Pelco, Mark was Divisional Director for Vista at Norbain running their ownbrand product division.
M
How have the last twelve months been for you? I have been with the company for a coming on a year now and during that time we have seen good growth not only here in the UK but also across the majority of our EMEA markets. We have experienced a positive start to 2015 with some major orders coming to fruition, and have a great pipeline in place. What is Pelco’s relationship with (parent company) Schneider Electric and its divisions? Two years ago the decision was taken to set Pelco apart within the Schneider organisation, so that we can operate as a separate entity and act autonomously, ensuring that, as Pelco, we remain focused on our core competency of video security. Following the latest reorganisation in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Poland in January 2015, the whole of Pelco is now operating in this manner. All said, we are part of the SE Building Business and as such we work closely with all of the divisions of Schneider Electric with a great relationship between all of the dedicated business development aspects of each section and our recent appointment of Simon Nash as Vertical Market Business Development Manager for EMEA, will help further drive opportunities from this synergy. In real terms this means that when one of the divisions of Schneider Electric is working on a project we can advise on the best video solution
“Two years ago the decision was taken to set Pelco apart within the Schneider organisation, so that we can operate as a separate entity” 14
for the job. For example Schneider Electric is very strong in solar farm design and development and Pelco will work with their team on the security aspect of a project to make sure the best surveillance system is proposed and installed. How does a camera manufacturer go about developing new systems in such a busy market? We do a number of things to find out what it is that people want and what the requirements of the future might be - talking to customers and technology providers and also looking at developments in the market and how they are performing. By combining all of this information we can see where the implementation and adoption of video surveillance is going and what types of products we need to develop. This information will help define our MRD – a manufacturer’s requirement document – which will give us the product specifications which we swiftly turn into product for today’s and tomorrow’s needs. To remain lean and efficient at the same time as staying on top of the trends and releasing new technology, we also go through the process of looking at what systems we do not need to be promoting, we have a continuous phase in / out cycle to manage new and old inventory lines. What about 4K? Some of your contempories are working on these cameras, are you? I think that 4K is definitely one to keep an eye on, but I don’t think the technology is really ready yet, despite the fact that there are a few cameras already on the market. The cameras that I have seen so far do not appear to work well in low light environments and their wide dynamic range is fairly limited so while they can give a very detailed image in bright day light conditions they are seen to struggle in high brightness / contrast scenes and performance is not so good in the dark. This is not ideal for security applications, so we are waiting for the next generation of 4K sensors and DSP’s to come online before we begin to look at the technology in earnest. H.265 will also play a big part in the development and success of 4K because the bandwidth and storage needed for the higher resolution video is a lot larger than 1080p systems, which we see is becoming the

SMOKE DETECTION
standard resolution for industry. We all need to keep in mind that when an a 4K camera is used then the infrastructure of the project needs to change with upgrades to recording, displays and networks – going 4K involves much more than buying the camera. What kinds of requirements do installers tell you they want from cameras? Invariably installers want systems that are easy to install and program/commission with improved interoperability, better performance in challenging lighting conditions, improved intelligence such as video analytics and less lag on networks. These have become the standard requirements that we have addressed over recent years. We host a lot of ‘voice of the customer’ seminars through the Product Management Team based out in Clovis in California who also listen to feedback from our sales teams for new directions and product ideas. A manufacturer should never try to force technology upon its customers; instead find out what is needed and meet that demand. The history of technology is littered with failures that did not meet the demand but were pushed
hard by manufacturers. The CCTV sector has seen a number of big buyouts recently. Were any of these a shock? I think of all of them, the Axis purchase by Canon was the biggest surprise. Canon has made a bold move and it is a big statement to buy a VMS company such as Milestone as well as one of the leading IP camera companies (Axis) within a twelve month period. I do feel that there are still more acquisitions to come as the competition gets tighter and as the purchases of Samsung Techwin and Security Products from Siemens indicate, anyone can be bought. What are your predictions for the future of the security market? As we discussed, the popularity of 4K will grow in the future especially once the technology evolves. The adoption of IP is going from strength to strength and I think we will see more cloud storage come into play. We will also see higher performance optics and some remarkable advances in multi-sensor camera technology are just around the bend.

TEST
PRODUCT TEST or this test the boxed camera and a boxed PoE injector kit were supplied together with a pair of RJ45 patch leads and three documents; these were a Mobotix Product Guide (Access Control and CCTV), a specification sheet for the PoE injector and a Q25M camera manual. While the i25 could be thought of as a cut-down version of the Q25 this was not explained and indeed it was found that the Mobotix website only provides the Q25 manual under the “Hemispheric i25” support tab. This 156-page manual is very comprehensive but makes no reference to the i25 camera and its differences. This camera model is an internal wall mounted 180° viewing version that follows on from their successful Q25M internal / external camera that provides a ceiling mounted 360° view. The camera case is off-white with small flecks that give a slightly dusty appearance but this may help the camera to blend into its surroundings. The camera forms part of the Mobotix “Decentralized Video System” concept and therefore is ideally suited to a Mobotix based system or as a stand-alone device; it can supply M-JPEG streams to third party recording systems but does not support ONVIF or PSIA protocols. Streams are intended to be provided using MJPEG or the Mobotix proprietary MxPEG image compression protocol. The camera and its packaging lacked any form of serial number, so this may be an issue for traceability, particularly on large installations. Apart from a manufacturer’s bar code that is not given a text reference, the only identifier given where you would expect a serial number to be placed is a factory IP address, no MAC address that could be used as an end-user or installer unique identifier is printed. The supplied memory stick had around 2.5GB of files but no simple start Menu or Install file. Six executable files were in the root folder including an MxCC.exe Control Centre program that encouragingly could be run directly from the memory stick without installation onto the PC.

The Mobotix MX-i25-D12-PW hemispheric camera angle panoramic view from its fisheye lens. This can then be displayed in various screen options. The wall-to-wall view can cover a whole room with the image corrected to remove any lens trapezoid distortion. The 5MP sensor gives good image resolution and allows a virtual PTZ operation to be performed on the live or recorded image. The image had good horizontal linearity when mounted vertically and was measured at just over 180° horizontal field of view. Oddly the camera is available as a colour-only or monochrome-only version with the mono version being quoted as a much higher sensitivity. It is unlikely that many UK based installations would request a monochrome view for such a camera.
Getting started Once connected via the PoE injector the camera went through a start-up routine with two front mounted LEDs giving a status indication. The left hand LED was permanently green while powered and the right hand LED was red for approximately 45 seconds before being extinguished. There was no information on getting images from the camera in the operation guide but simply connecting a browser to the factory default IP address given on the back of the camera quickly connects to the camera giving an image in a Mobotix browser window with a range of on-screen menu command tabs. The Q25 manual has “First Images and the Most Important Settings” on page 115. The user and password for the Admin and Setup menus are provided in the margin on the same page of the manual. Once entered the Admin menu gives access to an Installation Wizard and basic settings and accessibility. The Setup menu gives a wide range of image control and quality settings along with a variety of Event control features and Analytics settings. Events can be triggered by video content, audio level from its internal microphone or by network based triggers. The camera can be used in a Master and Slave mode to trigger multiple cameras once one is activated. Recordings can be stored locally on the internal Micro SD card (Up to 64GB capacity) or to

a USB connected external drive. In addition to the output stream an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) destination can also be configured to save JPEG images by schedule or on event.
Performance This colour version gave good results in an office environment down to just under 5 lux although at this level AGC noise was very evident. Either through a conventional internet browser or with the free Mx Control Centre software the camera has a range of viewing modes that can be used to display the whole panoramic image or selected views from the scene. Each of these views can provide a virtual PTZ control around the total image or simply a selection of preferred scenes such as room entry points. Changing the Micro SD card involves removing the single-PCB based camera from its casing but this is straightforward if the instructions are carefully followed. If the whole image area is recorded then the maximum recording rate is 10ips however this would generally involve recording space where no activity could take place such as ceilings so with a correctly aligned image, rates of 15ips at QXGA and 30 ips for their MEGA and HD (720p) modes are possible Sound can be recorded via its in-built microphone and there is an option to fit a small
loudspeaker into the camera body or to use the audio output to drive an external amplifier or to interface to an entry-phone device.
Conclusion This camera fits well into the Mobotix range and their concept of distributed activated recording. The UK still has an apparent preference for recording centrally and continuously so that there is a complete record of all activity and inactivity so this camera will more likely appeal to prior users of the Mobotix approach or those looking for a cost effective flexible IP recording solution that has no additional licensing costs and due to the local recording can be accessed by basic PC or smartphone technology. The image quality is very good and the flexibility of its analytic capabilities and event recording features may appeal to users who are prepared to spend time carefully configuring this unit to suit specialist applications. The lack of any ONVIF compatibility will potentially limit sales to customers with Mobotix based systems, stand-alone applications or those with third-party controls that have incorporated Mobotix protocols.

TOOL TEST
There are a number of essential tools you will carry around with you, none more vital than a screwdriver. These days many of you will use screw bits for your power drills/drivers, however for tight spots where a larger cordless unit just won’t fit there are two options a traditional screwdriver or a small motorized unit
he company Ryobi may not be familiar to you but it is owned by the Hong Kong giant TechTronic Industries (TTI) that has brands such as Hoover, AEG, Vax and Dirt Devil under its banner. In the UK the tools are available from stores Screwfix, B&Q and online. The CSD4130GN 4V lithium-ion screwdriver is a small right-angle shaped unit as opposed to the full length designs of the original powered screwdrivers. As such the unit will fit into a gap of 19cm (with bit) to be able to tighten or loosen screws in tight spots. This is a real benefit over the earlier drivers such as the Black & Decker 9019 (29cm with bit). The driver has twelve torque settings up to a max of 5Nm which isn’t huge when compared to the 40Nm+ of power drills, but looks good against the abilities of other handheld battery drivers in its class. The recommended torque applications are: 1-2 for small screws 3-4 for driving into soft material 5-7 for driving into soft and hard material 8-9 for hard wood applications 10-11 for large screws 12 for full power jobs. For simplicity we left the unit on full torque when testing it, however this is not ideal for softer woods and gentler jobs. The unit features an LED light for working in dimly lit areas although when close up, the light does shine underneath the screwhead. This is

Ryobi CSD4130GN 4V Screwdriver activated every time the driver switch trigger is depressed. With the GripZone overmould technology for improved comfort with a positive grip the unit does sit nicely in the hand and will not slip in use. This is a bonus over some competitor products that feature simply moulded plastic grips. The direction of chuck rotation can be changed with one hand while in use by depressing a selector above the switch trigger. The direction selector has three settings, forward and reverse plus a centre lock. With the switch in this position the spindle is locked and the unit can be used as a traditional screwdriver for hand tightening or loosening jobs. One of the Ryobi tool features is the QuickChange chuck with automatic spindle lock for one-handed bit changing. This is very useful as anyone who has ever tried to change a chuck with one hand can testify. The unit comes supplied with six 6.35mm (1/4inch) hex bits, three phillips and three slotted. The driver itself is powered by a 4V lithium-ion battery that takes around 10-12 hours for a full charge, however the unit out-of-the-box does carry some charge so can be used straight away. To charge the unit simply plug in using the supplied charger and leave it on until the red LED light at the bottom of the grip goes out. Running time obviously depends on the amount of work the unit is doing. The pack also includes a bright lime green storage pouch for the charger, driver and bits. You may not use this for the driver itself but if you store the charger in it, at least you will easily be able to find it when you come to power the battery. If you have a number of charging plugs and cables it helps to be able to recognise the correct one straight away and the matching lime green pouch certainly helps! In use the unit did exactly what was required and we found the small size particularly beneficial for tight area applications. When compared to manual screwdrivers the unit comes out on top as the smaller the head on a screwdriver generally gets, so does the width of the handle which can prove tricky for grip/leverage. When we did encounter screws that the unit could not undo, locking the spindle and using the tool manually gave us easy leverage until the power could be brought into play. It will obviously never replace an 18V/24V power drill, but for the jobs it is intended for, the Ryobi CSD4130GN is a worthy addition to your toolbelt.

Partnership to offer intrusion detection Stanley Security and Digital Barriers have joined forces to offer SafeZoneedge, developed for Axis network cameras and encoders, video analytics application for intrusion detection. It analyses scenes whilst automatically mitigating any environmental effects that can often cause nuisance alarms. This reliability is recognised with a UK Government i-LIDS certification. The partnership with Stanley Security will see SafeZone-edge rolled out across European customer sites. SafeZone-edge takes advantage of the Axis open Camera Application Platform, launched in 2009 to facilitate third party integrations of this nature, with installation directly onto Axis network cameras and encoders. As such, the application delivers a true alternative to the conventional server-based intelligent video analysis (IVA) and simpler edge-based video motion detection (VMD). Stanley Security is now using the software in conjunction with its I-View Now video platform on Axis devices in all its major installations and projects. Footage from each device can be monitored automatically for perimeter protection and loitering or intrusion detection, with alarms sent directly to one of the company’s operations centres. www.digitalbarriers.com
Improved PIR detector for easier programming Luminite Electronics has introduced the new and Genesis 2 PIR detector which comes in both wireless and hard wired versions. A number of improvements have been made to the unit, foremost of which is the new LED display which will make it quick and easy to programme. This replaces the old DIP switches, so functions such as transmission range and sensitivity can now be much more easily adjusted. The new version also boasts improved detection with a 90° rotation arm allowing the unit to look sideways along a perimeter fence or wall. The hard-wired version has a provision to fit a temporary transmitter module which will allow it to be accurately walk tested. Last but not least, the new version can be set to operate from Alkaline or Lithium batteries, a distinct advantage for export markets where, for example Lithium batteries are more suitable in colder climates. www.luminite.co.uk

EDITOR’S CHOICE
EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
IP cameras offer alternative option
Protecting up to 60 distinct zones Senstar has revealed enhancements to FlexZone, its fence-mounted sensor that enables zoning through software. Tripling zone support, extending power around the perimeter, the system now features: 60-Zone Support: Each FlexZone processor supports up to 600 m of sensor cable and can now be configured in software to support up to 60 distinct, individually-sized detection zones (it previously supported 20). FlexZone’s finegrained zoning enables accurate camera pointing which reduces operator response time and allows zones for gates and entranceways to be defined without auxiliary equipment. Power Supply Sharing: The system now supports up to five processors per power supply (it previously supported three). This allows FlexZone to be installed at large sites while requiring access to only one or two power points, making installation easier and reducing material and labour costs. EDAPT: Environmentally Derived Adaptive Processing Technology (EDAPT) mitigates the effects of wind and heavy rain. Using its precision ranging capability, FlexZone accounts for the background environmental noise level in the vicinity of a disturbance before declaring an alarm. Other enhancements include audio input of fence response and internal alarm queuing in case of network interruption. www.senstar.com

ViDiCore has announced a camera line called RIVAflex. The new IP cameras do not include the 3D video analytics system, which is integrated in all RIVA cameras as a standard feature, which, according to the company, makes RIVAflex a more costefficient alternative for projects, in which the video analytics is not required. The box, bullet, dome, speed dome and PTZ dome cameras for indoor and outdoor applications are describes as easy to install and can be integrated in existing camera systems via their ONVIF compatibility. The surveillance cameras are equipped with different features for example H.264, MJPEG, WDR, PoE, IP66, IK10 vandal resistance, integrated IR LEDs for an optimal usage in low light environments, micro SD card support for local storage and triple video stream. Furthermore, complementing accessories (adapters, brackets and junction boxes) complete the new RIVAflex product line. www.rivatech.de

EDIT wireless april15_000_PSI_mar15 26/03/2015 18:12 Page 2
WIRELESS
The wonders of wireless Electronic technology is increasingly going wireless and the same can be said for security systems. How has the intruder alarm market evolved with the rise of wireless? s we all know wireless systems are (generally) easier to fit than those applications that require cabling fitted. Of course in scenarios where cabling is already in place and in good condition, the upgrade of a wired system can be swift, but not normally as quickly as a wire free set up. Although the essential components of an intruder alarm have remained the same over the years; a panel and triggers such as PIRs or magnetic/vibration sensors, the improvements that manufacturers have made to the technology over the years have resulted in fewer false alarms than ever before. Furthermore the accuracy of systems that are no longer affected by triggers such as the family pet have all contributed to lower false positives. Perhaps this is why the main changes we have seen in intruder technology have not been in the design of the panels (many companies’ flagship products are more than a few years old) but in the performance of the peripherals and the reliability of wireless functionality. Throw these developments in with an increasingly device-led domestic customer base and you get a clear picture that there is a rapidly growing market for wireless alarm systems with remote access via smartphones/tablets. Factor in the integration of security into home automation and you can see great opportunities for the manufacturers to reposition their products in the market with apps and ranges of panels with wireless connectivity and stylish looks. At one end of the domestic spectrum you can have little white boxes such as Honeywell’s Le Sucre that very much suit the ‘simplistic’ look and feel that tech fans love (it’s a white box with a SIM in it) and then you have something like the Texecom Premier Elite range which not only looks the part but is also suitable for use in commercial applications such as banks, retails outlets etc. The development of flexible, efficient wireless systems has had an effect on the whole security sector, including alarms, CCTV and fire. Wireless is now an established technology and one that is taking the installer into new places and in new directions and depending on the budget there are panels of all shapes and sizes that offer easy install and maintenance along with designs and

remote access features that attract the domestic customer.
Why not wiring? The UK security market is traditionally wired, meaning that in many places the wiring infrastructure is already in place. This is something that early IP CCTV sales came up against (and probably still does) especially as it pitched as one of its benefits “you’ll save money on wiring” – well not if that wiring is already in place and is in good working order. And today we still have an awful lot of analogue CCTV running in the UK. For alarms, the advantages of wireless security are more than simply the lack of fiddly wiring and it remains a common sense installation regardless of whether or not wiring is already in place, however it is not always nailed on that a wireless system will be the best option. As long as the use of existing wiring doesn’t lead to a compromise in system design (there’s no point in using the existing cabling if it does not allow you to fit
You can see great opportunities for manufacturers to reposition their products in the market with apps and ranges of panels with wireless connectivity and stylish looks 23

WIRELESS
peripherals where they are needed) then that is fine. The most cost-effective option that does the required job is usually the one that wins the order which is why many intruder alarm companies offer wireless and wired panels. But there is another benefit in specifying wireless technology on top of the ones already mentioned; modularity, or as the non-marketing types would say, adding on more bits after the first system goes in. Installing the original panel, PIRs, sounders etc is enough of a job whether it be wired or wireless but when the system needs a few extra detectors or peripherals adding at a later date then wireless wins hands down in terms of speed of install and simplicity. This is why many of the DIY alarm systems at the bottom end of the market are wireless because they are so easy to fit. But the benefit of simplicity should not lead anyone to the conclusion that security is being compromised as a result of ditching the wires. We all remember when to be a technology early adopter was to risk taking your life in your hands against the glory of being the first person to use something. Today being the early adopter is actually what everyone craves (see Editorial p5) but those people who put their security in the hands of early wireless systems soon found out that any thick walls and floors and certain conditions led to an unsecure area. However we now know different as the wireless evolution has brought us to a position where wireless is as secure as wired. And anyway, wires can’t be cut to disable a wireless system and you can also add in GPRS/3G for back-up. Any fault within the
The benefit of simplicity should not lead anyone to the conclusion that security is being compromised as a result of ditching the wires 24
wireless system can be picked up very quickly whereas problems with wired installations can take a while to pin down the exact point of failure. Wireless systems can also help secure areas where wiring would not be an option such as a listed building or a building with eccentric design elements. Wireless technology (be it intruder, fire or CCTV) are often the only option for these applications. Furthermore in some cases wireless technology is used to extend the scope of wired systems into areas where cabling cannot be installed but the existing wired area is still viable.
Got an app for that The security market today has seen widespread adoption of software applications (Apps) that can be downloaded onto a mobile device to give remote access to video footage, alarm status or home automation system including lighting, heating etc. The intruder alarm manufacturers have recognised the desire for such a service and have developed their own software for giving the customer remote monitoring and control of certain functions of their security. While this, in itself, is not a fundamental part of wireless technology, it is a wire-free portal and is very much a growth area for the next few years. So while we say that the basics of the intruder alarm system have not changed all that much, in essence they haven’t, but the method of signal delivery along with reliability, performance, design etc certainly has. While not every application is required to go wireless, those that do, even those that combine the two formats, gain additional benefits - and so do the installers that fit them.

INSIDE STORY
The electronic super guard! tralis has released the ADPRO XOa 3 SecurityPlus Remotely Programmable Operating System for FastTrace 2 Series Remotely Managed Multiservice Gateways (RMG). XOa 3 turns a FastTrace RMG into an “electronic super guard,” with intrusion detection, presence awareness (loitering), automatic visual verification of fire/smoke, and multi-level response capabilities ranging from 2-way audio talk-down to control of lighting, access, and ventilation or any other building subsystem, all from a remote monitoring station. XOa 3 also provides business intelligence capabilities, using security infrastructure to monitor customer behaviour to improve sales and customer service. The system also expands the number of channels supported to 32 x 5Mbps IP video cameras, with up to 32 of Xtralis’ analytic applications (32x32) per FastTrace system. Samir Samhouri CEO at Xtralis explains more about the technology:
X
Xtralis has introduced ADPRO XOa 3, a convergence software platform with security, safety, business intelligence, and building management services
How can XOa 3 replace or improve guard performance? In addition to security, guards do many other tasks in a facility, from fire response to basic building management functions and some customer service engagement. Xtralis video content analytics, including IntrusionTrace, LoiterTrace, and SmokeTrace are always alert, and immune to false alarms or missed threats, regardless of conditions on the scene. The strength of early and accurate detection combined with high-resolution video streams (32 channels @ 5Mbps), delivers the ability to secure and control premises from a remote monitoring station 24/7. This is equivalent to having 32 sets of eyes, ears, voice, and hands at a single facility, all managed through a single FastTrace enabled by XOa 3.
How does the system help first responders?
www.xtralis.com
26
The Central Monitoring Station can partner with on-site personnel and first responders more efficiently and provide event notification, alarm images, and real-time video on mobile devices for situational awareness, with multi-level response capabilities including command and control of a site from anywhere. The ADPRO iTrace mobile application provides live video images from the scene, building management commands to turn the lights on/off, open/close a gate or door, and turn on/off HVAC with one click to assist with first responder intervention as well as speak to people onsite to provide direction or
instruction for evacuation. ADPRO iRespond is a mobile application that delivers alarm images and live video streams to first responders to provide intelligent situational awareness to enable them to plan a more effective intervention. This can be done en route to the site, saving time on arrival for planning an entry/intervention.
What services does XOa 3 enable? LoiterTrace provides unwanted or prolonged presence awareness for both inside and outside environments which can be used in many applications, including car parks, school grounds, and multi-tenant buildings. Two more services are now available from Xtralis, the new SmokeTrace analytic which works with existing smoke detectors to provide automatic visual verification of smoke and to reduce unnecessary intervention significantly. The new ClientTrace analytic uses existing security infrastructure to monitor customer behaviour to improve sales and customer service. Up to 32 of these security, safety, and business intelligence capabilities are available on a single platform simultaneously. These analytics can be deployed by CMS and installers at end customer sites on an as needed basis to significantly enhance the service offerings per site. In addition, XOa 3 can sense 168 inputs and controls 144 outputs to deliver additional building management and security services, including energy savings through remote control of HVAC and lighting.
How does it enable service on a pay as you go basis? The Xtralis Xchange web portal, allows for remote downloading of software and licenses, so that new services can be enabled on XOa 3 devices as-needed. Analytics licenses can be purchased and immediately deployed, with the option to redeploy the analytic at another site to protect the customer’s investment. The ‘pay-asyou-go’ approach is the ideal recurring revenuegenerating approach for CMS and installers, who gain the flexibility to deliver safety, security, and business intelligence to customers where and when they need it. Licenses are available in term and lifetime options.
Who can use XOa 3? All existing owners of a FastTrace 2 series system can immediately benefit from all of the above capabilities by downloading the software. By doing so, the existing system is automatically activated to accept all the capabilities that XOa 3 offers. Any customer needing to enhance and or cost-reduce guarding services can do so with a XOa 3 enabled FastTrace. All new FastTrace 2 series systems will be shipped with XOa 3.

This enables users to easily identify which detector is missing even from considerable distance.
Klaxon - Sonos Pulse Sonos Pulse fire beacons ensure that all personnel are notified of a fire emergency. With Pulse Alert Technology, buildings are evacuated quicker, evacuation requirements are unambiguous and everyone is made to feel safe and secure. Relying on audible fire alarm notifications alone disadvantages people with hearing impairments or those working, or living, in sound reducing conditions. Sonos Pulse beacons produce a light output that can protect most rooms with a single device. Sonos Pulse beacons are unmissable and unmistakable, attracting attention from those not looking at the device and otherwise preoccupied with other tasks.

The course Of all the golf courses in the world, very few are free from intrusion. Designed by Donald Steel, the Championship Golf Course at Stapleford Park is a rare exception. Located in the heart of England, surrounded by stunning Leicestershire countryside, the golf course is set within the delightfully pure Capability Brown landscape of the estate. With ever-changing views of the House, its lakes and five hundred acre park, this is classic English countryside at its very best. The course wraps around the heart of the estate in two extended loops, never being more than two holes wide, making golf here reminiscent of the great links courses. The Championship golf course is not only challenging but it is also amongst the finest
luxury golf courses in the Midlands. It was selected by the PGA European Seniors Tour to host their newest golf tournament in May 2010. The greens and tees are immaculately maintained to the highest Championship standards. For the PSI Golf Day, players will be treated to a breakfast on arrival before a round of Texas Scramble. MEET THE INSTALLER
This month we talk to Dave Mundy of Delta Security in London about modern life and his ultimate security system Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? We use distributors because we find it gives us a better service, keener prices and it means we don’t have to store large quantities of stock. I decided some time ago to let wholesalers be wholesalers, and for us to concentrate on installation because that is our core expertise. Our focus is on providing our customers with the systems and solutions that best suit their requirements, rather than being restricted in the products we can use. Is third party accreditation beneficial to you? Yes, third party accreditations are important because they protect our employees and customers, giving reassurance that the work carried out will be done safely and to the highest standards. What would be a typical project for you? The two main sectors we work in are social housing and education – specifically schools and colleges. A ‘typical’ project will include access control, and increasingly we specify cloud-based fob systems because of the levels of flexibility they deliver to housing managers in terms of controlling access to their buildings. All of our engineers are DBS (Disclosure Bureau Service) checked, which means we are able to work with children and vulnerable adults, and as a company our knowledge of the procurement processes and service requirements that are specific to these public sector institutions means we win these projects time and time again. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? ‘Talent’ is an issue that impacts all businesses, regardless of sector. Because we are Londonbased, the talent pool is perhaps larger than in some of the regions and we attract the best by offering a competitive salary and creating a rewarding and dynamic environment in which to work. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Managing expectation has always been part of the challenge, and there have been occasions where the expectation is simply unrealistic, perhaps because people have watched too many episodes of CSI! Nowadays though, with the prevalence of cloud-based technology, we have found the options available for tailoring a system to a customer’s specific needs are almost limitless and that the solutions available really are space age!
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Meet the installer What is the security industry’s biggest myth? The biggest myth is that ‘visible’ security attracts crime by advertising that there is something worth stealing. This is total rubbish and simply not born out by the facts. Good security deters crime, and it is irresponsible to think otherwise. Why? Because the sort of people who break into houses and schools are opportunists who want to be in and out quickly. They are rarely, if ever, criminal masterminds capable of overcoming high-tech security systems. Those willing to make this sort of effort will be looking for larger rewards, more likely found in banks or jewellers. What would make your job easier? My job would be easier if every engineer was an expert in every security product. Since this is not practical, I have made my job easier by streamlining the products we use to four or five manufacturers. I know we have the product range to suit our clients’ needs, and crucially I can make sure our engineers understand the products’ full capabilities.
Name: Dave Mundy Job title: Operations Manager Time in security/fire: 26 years at Delta Security Company name: Delta Security Location: Hackney, East London Areas of expertise: Security doors, CCTV, access control systems, cloud-based fob systems Accreditations: Safe Contractor, Construction Line, EXOR, SSAIB and MLA.
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security product? Similar to what I already have in my car, my ultimate fantasy product would be a locking device in my front door that recognises my wife and I so that we don’t need to scramble around in our pockets to find the key! Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Yes, and I really hope in my lifetime. If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? I would take my team out on a well-earned, funpacked ski trip. And I would take my PR advisor with me!
“Managing expectation has always been part of the challenge, and there have been occasions where the expectation is simply unrealistic, perhaps because people have watched too many episodes of CSI!” 41

Joel Babb – Farsight Security Services Working for a UK RVRC, I see the daily struggle of operators and installers trying to commission and monitor sites over broadband that is simply not up to the job of streaming live video. Streaming live video from a remote site to an RVRC utilises the up stream of the site’s broadband – in many cases this is with extremely low bandwidth. Admittedly, bandwidth is only part of the story but the rest of that story is outside the scope of this comment. Ultimately, hardware used for remote monitoring is advancing faster than the roll out of super-fast broadband. Hence, as more sites install HD analogue or IP cameras with multiple megapixels, the problem is getting worse – not better. Most of the hardware is developed in the Far East, where the world's top Internet speeds are found in South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. They develop for their local market and the solutions work well. Introduce the same solution to the UK and it struggles because of the broadband quality. I'll use Farsight as a quick case study: If it wasn't for the fact we invest tens of thousands a year in leased line Internet we too would be subject to terrible UK broadband. Farsight is situated on a busy commercial and industrial estate minutes from Peterborough city centre, yet the only broadband service available for all other local businesses is ADSL - with an estimated speed of 4Mbps download and 500kps upload. There are no low-cost fibre circuits available on our street. Should other sites on the street require monitoring, they will be subject to low frame rates, slow connection, and latency.
Sounding off! they need. As widely used as this terminology is within our industry a typical home or business owner simply isn’t familiar with it. We need to start speaking the same language as our customers by promoting how security solutions can enhance their lifestyle. Benefits such as smartphone apps, wireless panels, home safety devices, the ability to protect vulnerable friends and family, heating and lighting control and visual and video verification are all ways an installer could demonstrate the value of a ‘smart security solution’ to a customer. With wearable technology hitting the headlines recently the demand for smart devices is increasing like we haven’t seen before. As industry we seem nervous rather than happy about it. This needs to change. Wireless and hybrid alarms are available with advanced smartphone apps today, both can be enhanced with visual and video verification and home automation will follow very quickly. It won’t be long before major brands such as Google, Apple and Samsung will enter the ‘smart home’ market and start eating into our revenue in the same way as major supermarkets have taken over the high street. As an industry we need to take action and protect ourselves right now. We need to start talking to our customers in their language, listen to what’s happening outside of the industry and offer solutions that the world is starting to demand. We need to learn from the mistakes made by independent retailers and work together to make ‘smart technology’ work for us. If we don’t act now we’re in danger of missing the opportunity and letting the major brands come out on top.
It’s soapbox time as we ask the PSI Panel to tell us what annoys them about today’s security and fire industries
Steve Riley – RISCO One of the things I feel could be improved in our industry is the way we interact with home and business owners. The majority of us are still guilty of ‘feature bashing’. We talk to home and business owners about intruder alarms when they refer to them as home or burglar alarms. We ignore their blank faces when we explain that a typical ‘kit’ has two PIR’s, a fob and a door contact and ask them how many ‘zones’

At times, service providers are their own worst enemies – something that was exemplified by the fiasco surrounding G4S and the London 2012 Olympic Games

A persistent bugbear of mine is the negative way in which the manned guarding sector is perceived. The stereotype of a manned guard remains one of a muscle-bound male, dragging his knuckles on the floor and uttering words of only one syllable. This image is perpetuated by the TV and film industries, which do all they can to present this role in the most unflattering – and inaccurate – ways possible. This outdated view simply serves to undermine and undervalue this important industry and deters young people from considering it as a career. This is a great shame, as when the Security Industry Authority (SIA) was established and licensing came into force over ten years ago, it represented an opportunity for the sector to drive up standards and improve its image. However, at times, service providers are their own worst enemies – something that was exemplified by the fiasco surrounding G4S and the London 2012 Olympic Games. What’s just as irritating is that the sector – and that includes its trade bodies and associations – has continually failed to rise to the challenge of rebutting these pre-conceived ideas and promote it as a vibrant, interesting and positive area of work. Another contributing factor to this image problem is the low wages that manned guards are paid. It has been a cause of concern for many years but employers are hamstrung by the fact
that remuneration is driven by what the customer is willing to pay – sometimes only the National Minimum Wage (NMW). Furthermore, to comply with TUPE you have to maintain the wage levels currently paid, even if it is at NMW level. I’m a great supporter of the Living Wage and I’m convinced that better pay would make the industry more attractive as a career and attract higher calibre people into our ranks. Yet, some service providers and their customers are seemingly reluctant to even consider it. Until we address these issues, the image of the industry and those working in it will not change and we will simply go round in ever decreasing circles.
John Davies – TDSi Whilst security has had positive attention from UKTI through the Defence and Security Organisation (DSO) there is a feeling in the commercial security sector more could and should be done to support exports. This sits in contrast with the Government's focus on exports as a whole. Whilst the UK commercial security sector has flourished, UKTI focus still seems to centre around police and homeland security sales. Naturally the commercial security sector feels somewhat neglected! Of course the commercial security sector has been active in promoting what we do and the valuable contribution we make to the economy. The BSIA has tirelessly lobbied the UKTI for more support and interaction, recognising that commercial security providers have not traditionally embraced export opportunities as much as they could have – particularly SME businesses, which are an important part of the UK security sector. The bottom line is that not enough UK security companies export their products and services as much as they should. As a sector, we need to look at why this is and to help businesses to really grasp the opportunities available in the global market – government and business working closely together. In 2013 the UK security industry's exports were worth £3.2 billion (double that of 2007) and a whopping 37% went to Asian markets. The EU and USA combined represented a 49% share and the Middle East, whilst presenting a relatively low 4%, has lots of very promising opportunity for growth. With growth of exports at 13.3% in 2013 and predicted to be hitting 17% in 2017, the UK security industry is already punching well above it weight – so it would be terrible shame for the

UK Government not to really help us drive forward such an important commercial boost for the national economy!
Stephen D Green – Security Institute
I was recently asked by retired friends to provide advice on a security system they were being pressured into buying. They had previously been coldcalled by an intruder alarm company, using techniques reminiscent of the most rabid of double-glazing firms. The representative described in glowing terms the “advanced” system that they would provide on a 10-year lease, the way in which it would be monitored centrally, and the response they could expect from the local Police. This was necessary, according to the “expert”, because our friends house was “just the type that gets targeted by thieves”, and because they “are in the right agebracket to be victims”. Unsubstantiated, generic statistics were provided to support these claims, followed by the obligatory offer of additional discount if the deal was signed immediately. Our friends live in a sleepy village in rural Scotland, away from major roads, up a narrow cul-de-sac, overlooked by many neighbouring houses. To get to the property, an assailant would need to pass far juicier targets, and risk being trapped if detected. In terms of security, therefore, they inhabit a remarkably benign position. But such a realistic assessment of security risk does not seem to factor in the “design” of the “one size fits all” solution offered. Instead the high-pressure marketing process appears to rely on creating a climate of fear where none existed previously and of misleading the client into believing they need an expensive electronic solution when a few good locks would suffice. So my question is simply this: why do sections of our industry find it acceptable to cross the line between informing people and scaring them unnecessarily? Bogus amplification of the fear of crime does nothing for social cohesion, reflects badly on a supposedly professional industry and is morally reprehensible. We are better than this.
Richard Hobson – OPTEX Europe
Keeping intruders at bay and protecting valuable stock and equipment from theft or damage has long been the objective of any site owner, and a remotely monitored CCTV system undoubtedly presents the greatest opportunity for achieving
www.psimagazine.co.uk
that. The quality of monitoring depends on the reliability of the security system put in place; but on average 95% of the alarms generated are false or nuisance alarms. This can be avoided; and the solution usually resides in the system design. The key ingredients for success are accurate and reliable detection; the right lighting in the right places; the camera view matching the detection and the lighting fields that can provide not only visual verification, but also retrospectively help identify the culprits; and finally a video management system that can manage and configure all of the security elements together. To counter false alarms, installers must take the site configuration into account – whether the perimeter is open or closed; the environment, detectors may be impacted by vegetation, animals or light; and system requirements, including area connectivity. Once an intruder has been detected, and assuming the camera’s field of vision has been properly aligned with the detector and lighting, the operator within the remote monitoring centre can quickly verify visually the situation and take appropriate action. With the right system design and a professional installation, it is conceivable to reduce false alarms to virtually zero, and this is what the industry should aim for. By just replacing one sensor by another one more appropriate to the site configuration or environment, or by adding a different detection technology, such as “double knock” false alarms can be reduced by 80%. So we know it can be done.

OPINION
A clear picture for 4K? using fewer HD quality cameras covering a larger space. These kinds of savings could become more common with the use of 4K network cameras. Over the next year, we will likely see security decision-makers closely examining the full advantages of 4K whilst balancing these with the costs involved. With that in mind, it seems the industry still has some way to go before 4K adoption matches expectation.
Why not now?
4K market demand remains low, but adoption likely to increase from 2016 says Julian Rutland of Canon Europe
Security installers must take into account the effect multiple 4K cameras will have on the customer’s enterprise network 46
mage quality, particularly in low light conditions, continues to be the driving force behind network video surveillance purchasing decisions. As video surveillance technology advances at a faster rate than ever before, 4K is the latest innovation set to change the face of the security industry, offering higher image quality compared to current full HD products in the market. 2014 saw an explosion in 4K interest, not only in the security sector, but also from content creators developing 4K programming, manufacturers pushing 4K devices and an increasing focus on 4K in the film industry. Despite the hype, the technology remains in its nascent period. Therefore, the question for the security industry remains – is 4K really the much vaunted security game-changer it is billed as and how widespread will 4K video surveillance be over the next year? Whilst current demand for 4K from the video surveillance market remains low, the benefits for the security industry are evident. With a resolution of 3840 x 2160, 4K network cameras will deliver approximately 8 megapixel resolution images. This upgrade in image quality and resolution will mean clearer images on a live stream, better clarity of zoom images and a wider field of vision, which can drastically improve identification of a an individual or car number plates, for example. In addition, 4K used in a 360º panoramic dome camera can be vital in reducing the number of CCTV cameras an organisation requires, significantly impacting overall security costs. For example, the British Library was able to save over 330,000 in camera costs and associated installation charges as a result of
I
The benefits of 4K for the security industry are undoubted; however, a number of barriers to adoption remain, limiting the demand for 4K network camera capabilities in the security industry at present. The primary concern most often mentioned being the cost of the additional components required for a business to take full advantage of a 4K security camera system. To have a fully-effective 4K surveillance solution in place, network bandwidth and video storage must be factored into the buying decision. Security installers must take into account the effect multiple 4K cameras will have on the customer’s enterprise network. Bandwidth and storage remain significant barriers to adoption as installers and their customers consider how enterprise network will be affected by the addition of bandwidth intensive 4K network cameras. If not handled correctly, this could adversely affect the corporate network, slowing business critical applications. For example, some manufacturers recommend that organisations view the live stream in HD, and take advantage of 4K for more granular analysis in order to avoid bandwidth issues.
Looking ahead 4K adoption in the security industry will be based on market demand, which will increase the number of 4K products available and inevitably, lower associated costs. As the costs for 4K equipment – from monitors and cameras to storage – are reduced, security professionals and installers will see a spike in demand for the technology from end-users. 4K will undoubtedly set a new standard in video surveillance but, for now, the buying decision will continue to centre on cost, image quality and frame rate. Whilst 2015 may not be the ‘year of 4K’, the security industry is certainly on the path to adopting 4K as the industry standard for video surveillance in 2016 and beyond.

Filming in zero light conditions Canon Europe has added nine network security cameras to its range. All nine feature Canon Ultra-low Dispersion lens technology, with wide angle of views, antireflective infrared coating and a new CMOS sensor to attain new levels of low light performance. The cameras are available in various formats, including devices for outdoor and indoor use, Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ), fixed domes and fixed box cameras. The addition of Area-specific Data Size Reduction (ADSR) technology offers users greater bandwidth control by allowing users to select up to eight distinct areas in the field of view for HD recording, whilst the remaining areas are recorded in standard definition. This helps to reduce overall infrastructure and storage costs. Looking more closely at the fixed box cameras, the VB-M741LE / VB-M740E feature a 2.4x zoom lens and an ultra-wide 113.4° angle of view for imaging day or night, making these cameras ideal for use in extremely cold and hazardous outdoor areas. The full specification model also comes equipped with a built-in IR LED that enables filming in zero light conditions. cpn.canon-europe.com
Plug and play domes for any weather The IDIS DC-D2233 Series dome cameras are available in five variations with all models offering vari-focal motorized focus and zoom (MFZ) lenses. Features also include true day and night capability, built-in heaters and IP66 and IK10 housing. The new range also makes plug-and-play set up even easier, says the company. Zoom and focus are controlled directly from DirectIP network video recorders (NVR), or even remotely, to make fine tuning issues a thing of the past. The result is less implementation and commissioning time as well as the streamlining of routine maintenance. www.idisglobal.com
Connections Hello again, Some say…. the future profitability in the alarm sector will be driven by the addition of value added services which are not security based. Well with IP connectivity, Apps and remote monitoring there could be some truth in that statement. Ugly word isn’t it? Profitability I mean. How our industry ever makes a profit is a mystery to me as we continuously cut corners, fit cheap and beat up suppliers so we can reduce our margins, just for that ego trip of another bell box on the wall. However, it’s a cheap way of advertising the for next cut price installation isn’t it? I know that sounds very cynical, but the reality is that many businesses with healthy order books race around as busy fools on extremely low margins whilst trying to recruit additional (expensive) overhead to install the systems and then wonder why at the end of the financial year that they have not made much of a profit! So for many Installers the concept of today’s profitability is a major issue and one that must be addressed before even being able to consider the future. So before we go looking at what the future holds in store we need to go back to basics. Those businesses who make 10-15% net profit obviously understand the objectives, but it still can be awfully tempting to sit on ones laurels and not take into consideration the changes and opportunities that a developing marketplace may bring. We have seen a significant development in the reduction in cost of IP transmission and both communication and panel suppliers are manufacturing product that incorporates IP signalling. Why? Well, it enables detectors or any other device to have an IP address, it enables CCTV, audio and sequential information to be transmitted simultaneously. It provides a platform for the panel to become a comms hub for the premises, enabling home automation or assisted living via the internet. Connectivity to 3G smart devices for video & audio transmission to and from the alarm is also possible and in the unset mode alarm detector become event sensors lending themselves to become an assisted living system. Who understands IP technology platforms? A lot of installers, but not the majority, IT solutions companies do, an IP address is a device and it doesn’t matter what the device does. So IT businesses are coming to terms with detection and our British & European Standards and we have to come to terms with network addresses, routers, firewalls, LANs & WANs! What we can do with IP communication will drive the additional value added services which are not security based, until then there is still mileage in the traditional security system. But please, be proud to make a profit! At SMS and NMS we use this technology for voice over IP, cloud based CCTV monitoring and our own network infrastructure and resilience as well for auto dispatch on low priority alarm activity. MASmobile, MASweb and MASweb Lite providing testing, data amendment and alarm activity reporting is supplied via our secure IP platform as is our auto notification and reporting facilities. These are just some of the value adds we bring to a monitoring service, what are yours? We believe there is a need for step change in system design to encompass new technology, but not before the engineers have been fully trained! Bye for now

3D system for day or night motion detection Controp Precision Technologies has introduced 3D-Guard – a 3-dimensional video motion detection system. Designed for the protection of borders, strategic facilities and perimeters, 3DGuard is a day/night system for 24/7 automatic detection and alert of moving targets/intruders. The new system uses algorithms to automatically calculate the data that is collected from the dedicated area and from the target itself – and provides directives for the operator’s use. Providing precise indication of target location, size and course of movement, the 3DGuard system acts as “virtual fence” and can be installed on poles or towers, can operate as a fast deployment system or as a stand-alone solution. It can be controlled from a central command and control System and due to the automatic detection features of the system, a single operator can control a number of systems over a wide geographic area from a single station. Comprised of two stationary cameras with fixed fields-of-view, the 3D-Guard has a detection range of up to 1000 metres. www.controp.com

INTRODUCTION
Get connected! Welcome to the latest edition of PSiX magazine, taking a closer look at connecting security and technology for modern life verything seems to be connected these days, whether it is your smartphone, CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, fire alarm, television, games console; and the list goes on. This connectivity is not only widespread, it is also expected – just look at all of the hotels, coffee bars and public areas offering free wifi. Even while travelling we can go online thanks to train and bus operators laying on wireless network access. Due to this expectancy of connectivity and the fact that we also increasingly want all of our technologies to speak to each other to produce an integrated solution, the installer familiar with analogue systems or those with fairly new IP experience can get a little confused. Therefore we have again compiled a few articles to offer you some advice on working with networks and also highlighted a selection of new product launches that might help solve a problem. Hopefully we can help you to get networking! Andy Clutton – Editor PSi, PSiX

4G enabled home monitoring camera Panasonic Cameramanager has introduced Nubo, a 4G-enabled monitoring camera, to allow consumers to monitor property and belongings without needing Wi-Fi connectivity. In the past, consumers had to choose between a fixed Wi-Fi home monitoring product, a fixed professional surveillance or a mobile video recording product, ultimately sacrificing mobility, connectivity or security. To solve this problem, Panasonic Cameramanager is launching Nubo, a standalone camera that allows users to have all the benefits of a mobile security camera, with
the advantage of 4G connectivity. Designed for both indoor and outdoor usage, Nubo is weather resistant and offers sensor connectivity through an integrated wireless radio. Additional sensor controls enable the detection of human figures, enabling more tailored alerts and alarms for the user. Nubo also offers two-way communication, allowing the user to communicate through the camera when an alert is triggered. Vodafone will be the first partner to provide Nubo with 4G Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network connectivity in Europe. The integration of camera, app, storage and data plan ensures a turnkey solution for users. www.nubocam.com

The connectivity box accommodates the most common audio-video outputs including VGA, DVI, HDMI, and Mini DisplayPort, and features both a USB charge port and an RJ45 Ethernet pass-through port to keep presenters’ mobile devices or laptops charged and network-connected while sharing content with an audience. For streamlined integration into a boardroom or classroom setting, the connectivity box resides beneath the surface of a meeting room or classroom table, concealed by a retractable cover when not in use. When presenters are ready to use the display, they simply open the cover to expose the connection ports, and instantly connect their laptop or tablet to the display. uk.startech.com
Managed industrial Ethernet switches for reliability Available in both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit versions, the IE200 Series from Allied Telesis is ideal for applications in challenging environmental conditions such as elevator engine rooms and external or harsh environments. The IE200 Series meets the high reliability requirements demanded by industrial applications such as IP video surveillance, intelligent transport systems, and building management integration for both indoor and outdoor use. As organisations strive to improve the availability of services and utilisation of resources, there are an ever-increasing number of devices and sensors that are being used to gather information to enable smarter decisions to be made. This includes real-time information about environmental conditions and resource usage within a building or information about transportation and pedestrian movement in the surrounding area. Regardless of what the information is, many of these devices and sensors are located in environments that are not the

typical office environment. And due to the volume of data being generated, wireless connectivity is simply not an option. The Allied Telesis IE200 Series has been developed to support a range of critical infrastructure applications and environments where a reliable solution is required. The IE200 Series is available in 6- or 12-port models, with or without Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) support, and includes a range of features and functionality. Both models are DIN Rail mounted, resulting in reduced space, mounting complexity, and cost when compared to a standard rack. As many new applications today are IPv6 ready, and with the number of connected devices expected to boom, the IE200 Series will feature native IPv6 support, in a future release of firmware, to ensure support for the largest number of devices across a range of applications. alliedtelesis.com

The Internet of Things Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs at Panda Security looks at the dangers of linking technology to the Internet
Every system that is connected to a network is susceptible to attacks from any user connected to the same network
Wiki Definition: The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. According to Gartner, the Internet of Things installed base will grow to 26 billion units in
About Luis Corrons Luis Corrons has been working for Panda Security since 1999. He started in the technical support department, helping home and corporative users with virus incidents. A year later, he joined the international technical support team assisting Panda's technical support belonging to their partners distributed over 50 countries around the world. In 2002, he became PandaLabs' director as well as malware alerts coordinator in worldwide infection situations, dealing with major outbreaks and coordinating with external parties
2020. However, other studies suggest even higher figures, up to 50 billion. The fact is that today there are more than two Internet-connected devices for every person in the world. Until a few years ago, only computers had Internet access. Since the birth of the smartphone, however, the number of connected devices has been growing at an exponential rate and now includes tablets, printers, TVs, IP cameras, etc. But this is just the beginning. In a few years, the number and variety of Internetconnected devices will be huge, from light bulbs and door locks, to cars, wearable devices, etc. Even today it is possible to purchase Internetconnected refrigerators that allow you to do your shopping online from the comfort of your home. In this scenario, what does security have to do with the Internet of Things? Everything. Every system that is connected to a network is susceptible to attacks from any user connected to the same network. And if that network is the Internet, then almost anyone could try to hack any connected device. In the computer world, where attacks have been occurring for decades, there are two main techniques to compromise targeted systems: Social Engineering Vulnerabilities The first one involves tricking the victim into breaking normal security procedures without their knowledge. The second one consists of exploiting software flaws that could allow attackers to access (and often control) systems. On many occasions attackers use mixed methods, where an attack uses social engineering techniques in order to exploit a vulnerability. If there is something that differentiates the Internet of Things from the old concept of Internet-connected computers and smartphones is the fact that most IoT devices are hardly ever manipulated by end users directly. Let’s take IP cameras, wireless printers or routers for example… These devices are hardly ‘touched’ once they are installed. As long as they work, they are mostly ignored by users. On one hand this is positive, as it prevents social engineers from succeeding, but on the other it means that the software installed on these devices will rarely if ever be updated. And if it is not updated, then any vulnerability will never be fixed, despite the security patches released by manufacturers. A real nightmare. Under these circumstances the best solution is for manufacturers to implement auto-update systems that patch devices without requiring user interaction.

NETWORKING
Testing the network Chris Atkin, managing director of Total Comms Training & Total Electrical Training looks at why the network is only as good as the testing hanks to the huge popularity of cloud computing, the ever increasing demand for bandwidth, coupled with the requirement for seamless and ultra-reliable data centre technology continues unabated. However, in order to guarantee network performance, data centres need to run smoothly, placing a heavy burden on the shoulders of every data centre technician. It's a simple truth that the network is only as good as the testing. Issues with connector contamination can be the biggest cause of network failure, which is why inspection and testing should be the technician's most important task - it's key to making sure that the data centre operates efficiently. The default solution for the ever-increasing demand for cabling density is the Multi-fibre Push-On (MPO), a connection containing 12

optical fibres. This hardworking cable increases density and enables the company to shift much more data. But the answer is not without its own set of problems. Firstly, because each piece of active equipment has different demands, there are three different wiring methods for connecting the fibre trunks. Consequently, it's not uncommon for technicians to order an incorrect wiring scheme. Think of it like wiring a three pin plug, if you don't wire it the right way then it just won't work - the same rule applies for MPOs. Even if the technician has correctly wired the connection, the process can still be problematic. MPOs are mass manufactured which can result in performance uncertainties, so failures are expected to become commonplace. The cable is prone to damage and a broken fibre can result in multiple circuits being out of service. The fact that data centres have many thousands of these circuits, means that any downtime due to connection failures has the potential for a significant effect on revenue. While the majority of data centres expect their technicians to carry out routine inspection and testing on comms cabling, this is not always the case. Which is surprising when you consider the benefits. For instance, knowledgeable and skilled data centre technicians can carry out a special characterisation test to make sure that the trunk is wired correctly. Maintaining a clean end face can be challenging; it calls for absolute attention to detail when cleaning the connector, making sure it's free of contamination or defects such as dirt, oil or scratches. My advice is, always inspect before you connect! Obviously the responsibility doesn't solely lie with the technician. The data centre needs to provide adequate time for testing and verification. Furthermore, the company needs to understand the vital importance of regular testing and encourage its technicians to follow a proactive approach.

OPEN PLATFORM
The BBC News magazine recently published an article online under the heading, 'The end of the CCTV era?'. The piece reported that some local authorities are questioning if further investment in video surveillance can be justified. So, is this the end of a long period of sustained growth for the video surveillance industry? Peter Ainsworth, Head of Product and Marketing for the Security Solution division of Samsung Techwin, confidently predicts that nothing could be further from the truth hilst over recent years Town Centre monitoring schemes have represented a major source of revenue for all involved in the video surveillance supply chain, as a spokesperson for the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) states in the BBC News magazine article, public sector cameras are outnumbered by private sector cameras on a scale of 70 to 1. The private sector is continuing to invest in and rely on video surveillance to help deter and detect criminal activity, with the latest generation of high definition IP network cameras proving to be very popular among users who require evidence grade images.
W
Open Platform ushers in a new era The massive processing power of the DSP chipsets incorporated into latest generation of high definition cameras means that there are now some great opportunities to provide users with significant added value from their video surveillance systems. It’s a win-win situation for all parties, including manufacturers of cameras and recording devices who understand the value of working in partnership with specialist software development companies and it is certainly an opportunity for systems integrators and installers of video surveillance, whether they operate in the IT arena or are part of the traditional electronic industry. Endless Possibilities - Open Platform is a phrase that we will hear increasingly used. It relates to the opportunity to take advantage of the spare processing power of a camera’s DSP chipset to download and run edge based Applications in a similar way to adding Apps to a Smartphone, with the added bonus of reducing the need for dedicated video analytics servers by

up to 90%. Most Open Platform cameras which are currently available can only run one Application, but the processing power of some units, such as Samsung Techwin’s WiseNetIII DSP chipset provides customers with the option to run multiple Applications at the same time. Bespoke video surveillance solutions - Having the ability to utilise on board Applications creates opportunities for cameras to be used for multi-tasking, with various departments within a business or organisation able to simultaneously collect and analyse valuable management information via different specialist video analytics Applications. It offers operation managers the potential to improve efficiency in areas such as process control, health & safety, marketing and human resource management, as well as enhancing the ability of security personnel to react quickly and effectively to any security threat. Retailers, for example, can use cameras with an Open Platform capability to integrate with other in-store systems, software and technologies, such as EAS, EPOS, access control, ANPR, facial recognition, people counting, heat maps and human resource data, to analyse customer traffic patterns, manage queues or understand the implications of customer behaviour in relation to signage, store layout and promotions.
Having the ability to utilise on board Applications creates opportunities for cameras to be used for multi-tasking
Securing the future Design engineers are playing a key role in securing the future for the video surveillance industry by providing installers and systems integrators with the opportunity to offer bespoke solutions that meet the requirements of a range of market sectors. These include banking, education, healthcare, retail, transportation, etc, and indeed local authorities that want to achieve a higher ROI from their investment in town centre monitoring schemes.

Fire protection for fire service centre ssex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS) has opened a new Command and Control Centre, which is protected by Wagner UK’s OxyReduct fire prevention system. The development, which is an extension to the existing Fire Service HQ based at Kelvedon Park, Witham, provides a new 999 call centre, together with training and admin facilities for over 200 staff. The new server facility runs all of the software for the integrated command and control of the Service as well as a wide-area network for the region. The project was also developed in partnership with Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, which uses the same server facilities to power its own refurbished control centre. OxyReduct creates an environment where fires cannot start; by continuously reducing the ratio of oxygen in a closed room through addition of nitrogen to the air. The nitrogen volume is increased to a level in which combustibles do not inflame and an open fire cannot develop. However, the protected area remains accessible for staff at any time. With traditional forms of fire protection a fire has to start before they are activated, so damage is inevitable, both from the original fire and smoke but also from the effects of any extinguishant. With OxyReduct no fire damage can
E
occur and business continuity is assured. The new server room was designed to be airtight to ensure efficient nitrogen generation and reduce running costs. The 152 m2 facility has an N50 value of 1.2 and uses an OxyReduct Compact unit to maintain the O2 level at 15%. Wagner UK’s Titanus air sampling smoke detection system has also been installed to provide a secondary back-up for the system.

Laser security system replaces guards recently refurbished business park in Manchester that required a more flexible security solution than its existing manned guarding operation, has upgraded to an electronic system that features Optex Redscan laser sensors. Landlords Barwood Investments purchased Greencourt Business Park, now known as Manchester Green, at the end of 2013 and undertook a significant refurbishment programme to improve the buildings, the landscaping and the security of the whole site. Property Letting Agents, Savills turned to
A
Clarion to design a system delivering security and capable of replacing the manned guarding solution that had been used historically. The site is constantly in use so the system needed to be flexible in its configuration and always ‘on’. For Clarion the best way to protect the entire site was to secure the perimeter by deploying an integrated solution comprising an access control system working in conjunction with intrusion detection and an IP CCTV system. At the heart of this solution was the deployment of nine Optex Redscan laser sensors, scanning the activity on the perimeter line but also inside the perimeter. The laser sensors detect vehicles and people within a 30m radius and aren’t affected by light or weather conditions. They were integrated by Clarion with the vehicle barrier and the IP based intercom system so that they don’t trigger when an authorised vehicle or person enters the site. The units integrate directly with the video management system, Avigilon’s Control Center platform, triggering dome cameras to go to pre-set positions to track any detected intruder and send an alarm to Farsight, the monitoring station looking after the site.

Wireless technology hits the heights The Leadenhall Building in London has become the tallest construction project so far to utilise Ramtech Electronics’ wireless fire alarm system. Laing O’Rourke used the company’s wireless emergency system (WES) to protect workers and physical assets during construction of the 224 metre, 45 floor central London development. Around 85 per cent of the Leadenhall Building was assembled off-site for speed and efficiency. Being a wireless system meant that the WES units could be easily repositioned, which was key to keeping up with the level of construction progress for a high rise structure. The technology also saved time by allowing mandatory weekly fire alarm tests to be carried out using the silent function, avoiding disruption to workers. Paul Henson, Sales and Marketing Director at Ramtech Electronics said of the technology: “Once the work on site is completed the units can simply be moved to the next construction project.”
University improves everyday security efficiency Northumbria University has rolled out the distributed command and control solution, SafeZone from CriticalArc. The University selected the system to enhance staff and student safety while reducing costs through increasing the efficiency of everyday security operations across its six campuses. Through situational awareness, SafeZone enables the University’s security team to coordinate its response to incidents quickly and efficiently. The app makes it easy for Northumbria’s 30,000 students and staff to summon security or safety assistance via a simple tap on their phone, so allowing security personnel to pinpoint their exact location. Security officers are dispatched to emergency and first aid requests, while the general help button connects directly to the Campus Services Helpdesk. Students and staff can also “check in”, to make the University’s security team aware of their location while working alone or after hours. The cloud-based SafeZone system shares situational awareness across the whole security team, giving officers access to operational intelligence on the move, enabling more agile decision-making. As events unfold, all team members have complete visibility of the incident and the locations of their colleagues on smart devices. John Anderson, Head of Security said: “We needed to consider what resources we had available to us to support initiatives like 24/7 access. We hope nobody has to use it but I feel 100% confident that the resources we have in place, both technological and human, show our commitment to staff and student safety.” 64
Video surveillance installation for Russian Post Russian Post, the national postal operator for the Russian Federation, has invested in a Samsung Techwin video surveillance solution for its logistics centre at Vnukovo International Airport, Moscow. The 65,000 metres logistics centre is one of a number of investments which Russian Post has recently made in its infrastructure as part of an efficiency drive and all mail arriving at any of Moscow’s international airports is now processed at the Logistic Centre which has the capacity to handle up to 400,000 items per day. Moscow-based BCC Company were awarded the contract to design, supply and install a video surveillance system that would provide a valuable tool which managers could use to monitor 24/7 operational efficiency, as well as ensure a safe and secure working environment for all who work within the Logistic Centre. “Whilst there is not an unlimited budget, the specification for the project was for cameras to be deployed that were able to capture identification grade images,” said Sergei Pushkin, Chief Project Engineer, BCC Company. “Ease of use was also an important factor as was the ability to record high quality images of any suspicious activity so that they could be used, if necessary, as evidence.” BCC Company decided to single source all the components of the video surveillance system from Samsung Techwin. Phase one of the project has seen a total of 60 cameras installed, 45 of which are SCD2080P varifocal true Day/Night dome cameras with IR cut filters, and six are SCD-2080Rs, which share the same feature set, but are also are equipped with built-in IR LEDs. Nine ‘all-inone’ SCO-2080RH bullet cameras have also been installed. These have been designed to withstand temperatures as low as -50°C or as high as +50°C, making them suitable for locations which may suffer from extreme weather conditions. The images captured by the cameras are transmitted to a central control room where they can be viewed live on one of eight Samsung Techwin SMT-2231 monitors and simultaneously recorded on one of four SRD1673D DVRs, each of which have a storage capacity of 1TB. The SRD-1673D utilises 960H technology which allows it to record 650TV lines in real-time across all of its channels. Phase 2 of the project will involve the installation of 28 additional cameras to ensure there are no blind spots within the Logistics Centre or surrounding areas.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Not wheelie good proof Every month we seem to come across footage taken that claims to show spooky activity. In what must be the poorest attempt yet to show a ghost in action, this video creatively entitled “Possessed wheely bin a ghost steals my rubbish ghost caught on cctv” is a pitiful attempt at ghost hunting. Quite clearly taken on a very windy day, the camera has caught a full wheelie bin being blown across a driveway and the top layer of refuse ejected from the container. Proof of ghosts? No. More like proof of desperation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=E26ksp0bwGQ
Camera catches vortex event Dashboard video cameras are becoming ever increasingly popular to help with insurance claims and apportioning blame and like other CCTV cameras they also catch unusual events. In January the UK experienced rather wintry weather resulting in motorist Bob Hill capturing this footage as he drove through the Midlands on the M62. The motorway lights in the central reservation appeared out of control as gusts blew down the high-speed carriageway. The Highways Agency said the video shows 'vortex shedding' - when the natural frequency of a lamp column matches the speed of the wind. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV87l9lUoAE
CCTV spots wrong direction driver
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Don’t try this at home When you were younger you were told “Don’t do that or you’ll poke someone’s eye out” or “Don’t do that or if the wind changes you’ll stay like it.” All sound advice. Unfortunately for this young lad there was no-one around to say “Don’t put that firework down there or you’ll blow yourself up” which of course is what resulted. The CCTV footage from China shows exactly what happens if you put a banger through a gap in a manhole cover. www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2pWNZs_uHc
Dude, where’s my car? Sometimes lorries are just a bit too big to fit down city street and can cause damage if the driver isn’t careful. In this camera video from Brazil, the lorry driver is being careful but by moving out to give him space to turn a corner the manoeuvre results in his rear bar snagging on a nearby parked car. This in turn allows him to drag the car with him as he carries on his journey. Brings another meaning to hitching a ride…. www.youtube.com/watch?v=38yHrPcahb0
This CCTV camera footage shows a motorist driving the wrong way for nine miles down major roads including the M25 last year. Appearing in court in February 2015, Mitchell Locke was banned from driving for three years and sentenced to 14 months in a young offender institution after his black BMW was seen travelling in an anti-clockwise direction on the clockwise section of the M25 in Kent. According to a report in the Guardian, after leaving the motorway, the 20-year-old continued driving into oncoming traffic trying to join the A2, a major dual carriageway, before finally colliding with two other vehicles on a slip road. www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5wnUoQvETY
