NOVELTY BYE? You just never know which technologies are going to make it and which ones will just fizzle out… e have talked in the past about how technology sometimes comes to prominence without there being a sizeable demand for it or even much of a potential market in light of what has gone before. On occasion there can be another technology around at the same time (blu-ray vs HD discs or VHS vs Betamax) and sometimes there is an alreadyestablished leader that surely cannot be toppled by a new launch (Sony Walkman vs Apple iPod). What cannot be denied however is that the market is the one that essentially makes or breaks a new technology in terms of success.

This is why it must have come as a surprise to all of the manufacturers (and owners) of 3D televisions that the BBC has announced that it is to suspend 3D programming for an indefinite period due to a "lack of public appetite" for the technology. This news followed the announcement by ESPN that they have now stopped broadcasting in 3D in the US leaving Sky currently as the only broadcaster still with a toe in the 3D pool.

Kim Shillinglaw, the BBC's head of 3D, said the technology had "not taken off" with audiences who find it "quite hassly" even though half of the estimated 1.5 million households in the UK with a 3D-enabled television watched last summer's Olympics opening ceremony in 3D. The BBC said 3D viewing figures for the Queen's Speech and the children's drama, Mr Stink were "even more disappointing", with only 5% of potential viewers tuning in over the Christmas period.

Earlier this month retailer John Lewis suggested there was "not much interest left in 3D TV" as John Kempner, vision buyer at John Lewis, said there was “Still an interest, but it's not the primary purchase decision anymore”.

While many of the new TVs being released will still support 3D, it is reported that it will be no longer promoted as a big feature as smart TVs and Ultra High Definition are now seen as more appealing.

This news may well mean that the chances of 3D CCTV are pretty much dead in the water. If the concerted might of all of the manufacturers of 3D enabled televisions (many of whom also make surveillance cameras and monitors) cannot make the public embrace the technology on a long-term basis, then perhaps there wasn’t really a demand for it after all – just a ‘novelty’ interest.

Research and development in the security field will surely tail-off if 3D gains a negative vibe with consumers.

Future development will all depend on whether or not there are any advantages to be had from using 3D technology in surveillance. If the analytics functions can help build better identification mugshots for the police, or provide courts with higher quality evidence with extra perspective then there might be a demand for the continued R&D in some format. For now though, the picture for 3D is strictly one dimensional – it’s on the back burner while other developments such as remote monitoring are increasingly offering new opportunities across all areas of the security sector and certainly appear to be no ’novelty’ technology looking for a market to move into.

NSI wall of shame gains industry approval FIA announces three new videos In an effort to make technical fire information and advice more easily accessible to both the fire trade and members of the public, the Fire Industry Association (FIA) has released of a series of videos on YouTube. With a variety of audiences in mind, the FIA produced three videos which vary in content from an introduction to the FIA; the importance fire risk assessments; and a presentation on Construction Products Regulation.

Six-point plan for responsible CCTV launched Avigilon has launched its first manifesto, championing the use of responsible surveillance in the CCTV industry. The paper examines the issues facing the sector, with guidance on deploying surveillance systems that are fit for purpose and support a remit of privacy for the wider public when it comes to image capture, storage and use.

According to recent research by Avigilon and YouGov, 72 percent of the public would feel more secure if standard CCTV systems on Britain’s streets were replaced with HD CCTV with 41 percent attributing the feeling of safety to the fact security forces can use the footage if anything were to happen.

Robin Hughes of Avigilon says: “There are still lots of misconceptions and concerns within the industry to overcome. When such confusion is around, we believe the industry should champion a drive for ‘Responsible Surveillance’ which is underpinned by common key principles. This is why we have created a Six Point Plan for Responsible Surveillance. It’s is an ethos that we believe should guide the use of video surveillance in the UK.”

In June of this year, NSI launched the ‘Wall of Shame’, a dedicated page on the NSI website to publicise the names of organisations who falsely claim to be NSI approved. Through direct contact with those making misrepresentations and with the assistance of Trading Standards and the Advertising Standards Authority, most misuse of logo issues are addressed and rectified quickly and co-operatively. The ‘Wall of Shame’ seeks to address those more persistent offenders.

Organisations providing services in the security and fire sectors falsely claiming to be NSI approved is clearly not acceptable as it is misleading for end users and is unfair on those genuine organisations that invest the time and resource in maintaining their NSI approval by submitting themselves to regular NSI audits.

The NSI ‘Wall of Shame’ initiative has been welcomed by the industry in general. To date, this initiative has prompted more responses across NSI social media pages and groups than any other topic. It has also been positively referenced in a number of public forums.

Chris Pinder, External Affairs Director for NSI explained: “We wanted to demonstrate to our approved companies, and the endusers, that we take abuse of the NSI logo extremely seriously. Those who hold NSI approval have worked hard to achieve it and are justly proud of the badge. We wanted to demonstrate to them that we will do all in our power to prevent any dilution in the value of the NSI badge.”

Chris continued, “It will be a measure of our success if the numbers of companies listed on the Wall of Shame are kept to a minimum.”

THE BOTTOM LINE Apprenticeship grant aids security installer A North Shields firm has expanded with the recruitment of an apprentice, thanks to support from a government grant.

Custodian Total Security Services which specialises in intruder alarms, CCTV and access control systems, has appointed Kallum Whitelaw with help from £1,500 of funding.

The firm was struggling to recruit technicians and had in the past had success with apprentices they had trained inhouse so they got in touch with Access Training and also enrolled an existing apprentice, Marcus Nef, on the same course.

Access Training, in partnership with Cablecom, is mentoring Kallum and Marcus through the Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in Installing Security Systems.

Director, John Reay, said: “We had been looking for experienced staff to fulfil an upsurge in demand for our services for quite a while. We were finding that some engineers tended to move from company to company on a regular basis and we also found that some applicants lacked the knowledge that is required when working for an approved company. So we decided that training apprentices from scratch again would be a good option. We know from experience that apprentices tend to stay with you for a long time which is a big advantage for us. Through on-the-job training and support from Access’ training programme, Kallum and Marcus are proving to be great employees; they are learning fast and delivering great results for us.”

The government has a pot of money available to support small to medium sized enterprises that wish to take on a 1624 year old apprentice. To be eligible for the grant an organisation must have less than 1,000 employees and must not have employed an apprentice within the last year.

Kallum, whose role involves assisting with installing alarms and CCTV systems, said: “I spent a year doing an electrical NVQ qualification after I left school and I wanted to get an apprenticeship where I could use the skills that had given me. I’m really enjoying my work, I hope to make a long term career out of this.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Simon Stokes, Managing Director and founder of Assured Fire & Security.

Simon established his company in 1998, having previously worked as an electrician specialising in fire systems.

Many companies are looking at new business streams, how important have fire installations been for you?

Fire safety is one of our main services and involves much more than just installing fire alarms. To deliver the best service to customers, you need to fully understand the fire safety arena. This includes initial fire risk assessment, fire strategy, evacuation procedures, client attitude and the management of fire risks. Assured provide a full package for all fire safety requirements, offering increased value for our customers.

There's a common view that the installation of fire systems are less regulated than security, would you agree?

Definitely and it’s a crazy situation! Fire causes far more damage than crime, yet it seems almost anybody can set up a fire company without certification. The insurance sector has helped by specifying certain category fire systems and insisting that they’re installed by third party accredited companies, but many installations are not regulated by insurance – this is where the “cowboys” come in.

Many fire systems are installed by unregulated companies and electrical contractors, is the security sector missing out?

Security companies are better placed to enter the fire safety market as their practices are closely linked. Having said that, fire safety can literally mean the difference between life and death, therefore companies should only offer this service if they have the necessary resources. We’ve found that most customers won’t take risks if they understand the experience required to deliver a reliable fire service.

Only 5% of fire systems are monitored compared to 25% of security systems, why is this?

This is predominantly a result of insurance requirements. Very rarely do we see insurers specifying monitoring unless the business is considered high risk or has a history of fire claims. In addition, many companies that install fire systems don’t offer monitoring as they don’t have the 24 hour service to support monitoring. We recommend monitoring with all fire systems, as business premises are usually empty more than occupied.

With more than 67% of fires occurring outside of business hours, this should be a perfect driver for monitoring?

Absolutely but if you don’t offer it, the client rarely requests it. We offer monitoring with all systems, including manual systems as a surprising number of people forget to call the fire brigade.

ADAPTING FOR THE FUTURE This month we talk to Roman Cooper of Allcooper Security about life in the industry and the benefits of training staff and upgrading IT support oman Cooper took over the mantle of CEO at Allcooper in 2004, having started as an apprentice three months after the company was established in 1987. He spent over ten years installing security systems across the UK and into Europe, culminating in a two year project in the South of France. In 1997 he came ‘off the tools’ and has since been involved in training, installation management, servicing and maintenance at the firm.

Roman is also an alumni of the University of Gloucestershire as one of the initial cohort on the world’s first MBA for Families in Business. He is also a board member of GFirst, the place promotion agency for Gloucestershire and a driver for the county’s local enterprise partnership.

How have the last twelve months been for you?

It’s been an exciting year for us because in April 2012 we went live with a new business system covering sales, admin, handling, after-care and just about everything we do. We switched off all of our original IT-based solutions to go onto the new system and so implementing it has kept us very busy, but we are now very much seeing the benefits of the investment. All in all, last year was about getting the system bedded-in and familiarising staff with how it works. The new system takes us to another level in terms of our ability to grow the company and invest for the future.

In terms of the market, our turnover remained steady, despite all of the turmoil of installing the new IT system in what has probably been a year of consolidation and recovery.

Are you seeing any trends in the installer market?

Our industry is being squeezed at the moment with facilities management companies coming into the market and taking some major contracts and also, thanks to the introduction of IP, we have IT companies coming into the sector.

In the face of this extra competition our business has had to evolve to maintain its position. For example, customers aren’t driving us down the road of any particular technologies, we introduce the systems/designs to them, but we have to make sure that we have the right strategy in order to operate successfully today.

Also the IT companies in the security market don’t have the application knowledge when it comes to installing surveillance or intruder equipment and may not be able to meet the response times that security system orders require. People that operate their security provision as just a “box-shifting” exercise will find this market tough.

I firmly believe that if you want your security system to fulfil a specific function then you will only achieve that if you use a security company. If all that the customer wants is to have some cameras dotted around a site with no concern for image quality etc then they can get this from just putting the cameras up themselves or going to a non-expert. If surveillance is mission-critical then it needs to be taken care of properly.

I also think that security companies offer peace of mind when it comes to installations. Will a company with expertise in IT systems have the efficacy insurances behind them if anything goes wrong? There is a design responsibility that has to be met for the customer to be safe in the knowledge that their equipment will do what they want it to, when they want it to.

You used to be an installer yourself, stopping in 1997 – what changes have you seen since then?

We started out mainly as an intruder installation company and still have a big intruder base today and there have certainly been a lot of changes over the years in this field involving EU regulations and grading. Over recent years we have seen major changes with the development of IP technology and a move away from an analogue world into digital. I tend to think of intruder and fire systems as analogue-type products because they are constrained by

industry standards and insurers while in every other facet of security, IP has had a big impact.

Integration of systems into unified platforms using IP is the biggest new trend I have seen since I stopped installing.

Who/what is driving the industry forward?

Cost is obviously a big factor in where the industry goes and how systems are chosen. It is very difficult to sell a quality product with a decent margin when there were a lot of manufacturers just selling on price to gain market share, who have now decided that they want to sell based on features and performance.

Customers are still expecting a low price as well as quality.

We have found that there are more costeffective products on the market today that, when it comes to performance and reliability, match the features of more expensive technologies. The quality standard of the systems on the market is much higher than ever before, yet prices keep dropping because there are a lot of common components and technologies being used across the board.

There are certain high-end clients that know what type of equipment they want fitted and they will request specific systems for their needs, however we always need to check this just in case there could be problems with compatibility or open/closed protocol issues in the future.

Another trend that security companies have to try and compete with involves the supply chain and the fact that people are so used to buying equipment, specifically software, online.

Previously we will have agreed the price on a product and the installation time, whereas today you sell the product, installation time, commissioning, configuration and other valueadded services, all of which means that online price comparisons are not like-for-like. If customers try and work out which company to give a contract to by just doing Internet searches and trying to compare equipment and services then they will come unstuck.

I do feel that the home security market is seeing a change that could drive the industry down a slightly different path as cameras would now appear to be more popular than alarms. This doesn’t really make sense to me for that particular sector, but the appeal of watching footage on a smartphone or tablet is certainly a driving factor in that area.

How do you feel about IFSEC moving to London? There is talk from some people that installers won’t travel into the capital?

On a personal level, while we could get to the NEC in an hour, the extra distance in 2014 won’t put us off attending – we will just use the train

instead of driving. I can see all of the reasons why the show is being moved, such as catering for an increasingly international audience and if the move brings manufacturers and visitors who did not attend the show at the NEC then it can only be a good thing.

You are heavily involved with the development of the Security Systems Apprenticeship course at Gloucestershire College, how did this come about?

I was an apprentice when we started the company and went on a block release course because we felt that it was important that I knew what I was doing. At the time, I did an electrical course (City & Guilds 236) which was a fabulous time for me and I learned a lot in those early days. My experience back then has led us to take on apprentices ever since.

In the past we found that the standard of training on offer was quite unpredictable, leading us to use a number of different providers over the years. I approached the Gloucestershire College and said that we wanted to get something up and running and could provide at least half of the initial cohort for the course straight away. We gave the College a list of local companies, some of whom where our competitors, that we felt would also benefit from such training for their staff and that made up the numbers straight away.

The feedback that we have had so far has been fantastic and Skills for Security have got people lined up for the second cohort starting in September. I think that a combination of experience and qualifications is essential in business, in any field, and so hopefully the new course will help to bring through some good people in our industry.

I can’t see why any employer in this sector wouldn’t want to train their staff to a good level in whatever discipline they are working in. For example, at the moment in our Gloucester office we have two accounts apprentices and two IT apprentices. The Government will even give you funding to take on an apprentice, so in time you can build up a team of qualified people that will give you peace of mind. It’s certainly much better for individuals to make their mistakes at college rather than in the workplace!

Any predictions for the future of the industry?

New technology will continue to be developed, but I do feel that the market will experience a big growth in the take up of Software-as-a-Service as customers want protection but cannot necessarily afford the expenditure. Offering a slightly different model, such as access control at a site for £30 a week, makes a lot of sense in today’s financial climate. Traditional hire purchase and

leasing options have their place, but do companies really want to own the hardware involved at the end of the term? We think this SaaS trend will continue to develop, which is another reason why we installed the new IT system so that we are not tied to just the traditional routes to market.

Clearly IP and integration are the future; people will not tolerate disparate systems anymore and expect to be able to use smartphones and tablet computers to set alarms and view footage from any location. This is a real customer demand that installers need to get onboard with as soon as possible.

There is an issue that needs addressing in the market concerning staff keyholding and response. In my experience this service represents a risk that most businesses have not considered when carrying out their risk assessments. As it is something that is not part of the day-to-day business, and out-of-hours, the safety of the person who is called in at night is overlooked. There has to be a move towards third-party keyholding and alarm response because there is an inherent danger for employers if they do not use specialist services.

In terms of the new installers coming into the market, I don’t think that are many barriers to entry as there do seem to be quite a few new

companies starting up – although they do appear to be avoiding the more controlled areas such as intruder and fire, concentrating on IP CCTV. I do wonder if these businesses have the right resilience, back-up or assurances to be working in the security industry, so there may be a few casualties as contract demands cannot be met in the duration.

2-zone fire alarm system in a box ESP is expanding its Fireline range of fire protection products with the introduction of a new 2-zone conventional fire alarm kit, which brings together all the elements required for a professional system installation in a handy, boxed unit.

The kit comprises a 2-zone fire panel, two resettable call points, six optical smoke detectors, two banshee sounders and a 12v 7.0ah SLA battery and the new kit complies with the latest EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR), which came into force on 1st July 2013. Power source for remote CCTV OnGarde has addressed the need for a portable stand-alone power source for surveillance systems on construction sites or plant storage areas in remote areas. In these locations, where standard mains power is not readily available, running standard diesel generators full time can be expensive, creates unnecessary noise and exhaust pollution and be impractical. However, by using the Hybrid Power Station (HPS), it is possible for a full diesel tank, combined with the other available power sources, to power a single CCTV tower for up to three months between refuelling and servicing.

The HPS power management system runs autonomously, with no action required by site staff.

Over a 24-hour period the power requirements on a site can change so the Power Station has a hybrid power design that uses rechargeable batteries and a silent running generator to meet the challenges of higher loads over short periods or low loads over longer autonomous run times.

Photovoltaic cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which is stored in the battery system and is the primary power supply. Upgraded wireless system control Aico has announced that its RadioLINK Professional wireless interconnection technology has been upgraded to feature remote house code entry and the ability to add control to mixed (or ‘hybrid’) hard-wired and RF systems.

RadioLINK works by allowing multi-sensor, smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to be wirelessly interconnected by radio frequency (RF) signals, rather than cabling. The system has now been enhanced to allow for remote house code entry, which can save time and get over access issues when installing smoke alarms into HMOs and flats. In addition, the upgrade to the base now enables installers to add control to mixed (or ‘hybrid’) hard-wired and RF systems. All that is required to achieve this is replacing a single base on the hard-wired system with a new base. Once completed, a RadioLINK Control Switch can then be fitted to provide control of the hybrid system. Mobile security checkpoint launched Operating under the EasyCabin brand, AJC Trailers has developed a mobile security unit designed to provide secure access control for events and assist public order management. Entitled the ARC Mobile Security Checkpoint, the unit features equipment supplied by Onwatch and Todd Research and is manufactured from composite panels with seamless glass reinforced polyester (GRP) and high density foam insulation. It is equipped with a composite door, fitted with deadlocks, and two electric roller shutter doors. There are four windows included in the monitoring room.

The complete set up includes; 24/7 CCTV monitoring, walk-through and x-ray baggage scanners, biometric data collection and a roof observation platform. There is a secure WiFi cell mesh connection and a long-throw sound/PA system with a LED

Cylinders offer patented security Ingersoll Rand has introduced CISA Astral Tekno Cylinders. The new range, patented until 2026, comprises euro profile cylinders in single, standard and offset double format, as well as a standard and offset double, with thumbturn format in a wide selection of lengths. The system is designed to handle Masterkey systems and is capable of producing up to 63,000 cylinders on a single system. CISA Astral Tekno utilises a ten pin, two row key biting cylinder system which has over 1.6 million different key combinations as well as security enhancements to protect against all forms of forced entry.

The cylinder comes with pick resistant profiled brass pins and drivers and a BKP bump resistant device as standard as well as hardened steel pins and drivers to protect from drilling. SURVEYING UK SURVEILLANCE Despite various statistics being bandied around as though they were fact, no-one really knows how many CCTV cameras there in the UK. Until now… hether you take on board the figure of 4.2 million (as has often been claimed in recent years) or 1.85 million (as suggested by research carried out by the Deputy Chief Constable of Cheshire) the total number of CCTV cameras is unknown. The problem with the aforementioned figures was the way in which they compiled, which the disparity of almost 2.5 million between the two predictions would suggest were not really all that accurate.

However the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has stepped up to the plate and since 2011 begun compiling data from extensive research to determine a figure more useful for those looking to invest, develop and legislate CCTV in the UK. The figures that the Association came up with are for the number of cameras in the UK – not systems which should, if in a public area, be registered. Unfortunately legislation does not relate to individual cameras; it would have been so much easier to find out how many cameras there were in the UK if every single one of them had to be licensed, but we’re a bit too far down the road for that scheme now. So up until this point you would not be far off saying that the number of cameras we have is somewhere around 4.2 million plus or minus 2.5 million.

For the report entitled “The picture is not clear”, the BSIA took the decision to use a method of calculation that would give them a range of totals; low range, mid-range and high range so that the mid-range number would be a more reliable figure to use as a starting block for future research and development. This mid-range figure for the total number of cameras installed for security purposes including Police and Local Authority cameras is 4,895325. This number does not include cameras used for non-security purposes such as traffic flow or dummy cameras.

The number of cameras installed in private dwellings is also not included in the total as Paul Phillips, Technical Officer at BSIA pointed out; this is just too difficult a number to estimate.

At the announcement of the report Simon Adcock, Chairman of the BSIA’s CCTV Section said: “This study, undertaken by the British Security Industry Association, represents the most comprehensive and up to date study

undertaken into the number of CCTV cameras in use in the UK. Because there is no single reliable source of data no number can ever be held as truly accurate however the middle of our range suggests that there are around 5 million cameras.”

Civil liberties A key finding of the research would appear to slam the myth that the state is watching you, as the proportion of cameras controlled by local government is around 1 in 70. Civil liberties groups will likely choose to ignore this figure and concentrate more on the 5 million number for their agendas as shown by the reaction of Nick Pickles, director of the privacy campaign Big Brother Watch, who said at the news of the research: “This report is another stark reminder of how out of control our surveillance culture has become. With potentially more than five million CCTV cameras across country, including more than 300,000 cameras in schools, we are being monitored in a way that few people would recognise as a part of a healthy democratic society.”

Unfortunately for Nick the 70-1 ratio would mean that for every government-owned camera there are 1000 people in the UK – not exactly “out of control” as he puts it.

Pauline Norstrom, Vice Chair of the BSIA’s CCTV section said: “There is a popular misconception that the camera population in the UK is owned by the Government. The BSIA statistics set the record straight once and for all.

day, these cameras are not available to the government and law enforcement agencies; they are busy working to protect their owner’s premises.

“It is only when a major crime occurs, that the Police ask business owners if they have captured any footage of criminals passing through the private cameras field of view. Without the help of businesses investing into their privately owned systems, the Police would only have access to the one publically owned camera per 1000 head of population - far too few to be useful and certainly not the surveillance society, which could be portrayed.”

Private companies are funding the majority of the nation’s CCTV on the basis that it delivers a clear return on investment and this is where the majority of footage used by Police is sourced. Effective CCTV schemes are an invaluable source of crime detection and evidence for the Police. For example in 2009, 95% of Scotland Yard Murder cases used CCTV footage as evidence. Many of the nation’s most recent high profile crimes have been solved or criminals identified thanks to the use of images taken from cameras installed by private businesses including the Jamie Bulger case.

The vast number of arrests that were made possible using CCTV images after the London riots only served to show how the public turn to CCTV when the need arises. People soon forget the civil liberties angle when they feel outraged by crime as headlines across the media in 2011 called for the naming and shaming of rioters via the stills from cameras.

have so far. In the future this figure may rise or fall as the numbers can be honed by the BSIA. As yet there are no firm plans to repeat the exercise on an annual basis, but it is more than likely that the Association will be tasked with the job under the weight of demand for this kind of information especially from the government as legislation is difficult to work on without any data.

What is likely is that the information regarding the number of cameras in various sectors will be looked into in more depth. At this stage there are average figures for a wide range of disciplines such as pubs (4.4 cameras per site), sports/leisure centres (15.8 per site), local authority schools (12.4 per site) and car parks (9.6 per site). Also included in the report are shops, warehouses, restaurants, nurseries, garages and many more. This is the type of information that can be of use to PSI readers who are designing and installing systems, to show the typical approach taken for each application. It will also give an insight into how much money might be required to add surveillance to a building such as a school for budget purposes and aid policy development.

The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 states that the Secretary of State should publish a code of practice in terms of the development and use of CCTV in the UK. One of the aims of the research is that it will aid government with its decisions on camera regulation and also help the Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Andrew Rennison, in his work on civil liberties etc.

As more data is compiled the accuracy of the final total will improve however Alex Carmichael, Director of Technical and Export Services at the BSIA can see the numbers changing for a number of reasons including the fact that cameras are being fitted and upgraded all of the time saying: “As new technologies hit the market and cameras are able to view wider areas, use analytics and see further, then the number of cameras for

certain installations could reduce. Although what we really need to do is move away from camera numbers and look at the quality of the systems because the camera is only part of the system.

This is really only the start of building the CCTV picture, the debate will get wider and wider because at the end of the day, the cameras should all be providing the kind of images that we need should we require to take them into court. All camera systems should be based on quality, not quantity,” says Alex. “By having a working document that can be added to, changed and improved, then we can move away from camera numbers to the most important factor – whether the systems are suitable for operational requirements. Questions such as “is there a need for the camera?” or “does the system meet the requirements of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)?” and most importantly “is the camera and the system fit for purpose?

“We hope that the statistics that we have supplied will also be used for further debate in the industry, especially for further regulation,” continues Alex. “The Surveillance Camera Commissioner has a starting point of looking at publically-owned CCTV but best practice should be pushed out to the whole of the CCTV industry.”

As a large number of cameras are operated for the purpose of securing business premises, and the BSIA represents the private security industry sector, the BSIA has worked extensively to introduce CCTV standards and guidelines, further work is needed to ensure that CCTV is fit for purpose, properly installed and efficiently maintained.

“With so many new entrants to the CCTV market attempting to capitalize on the ever growing demand from businesses to protect their properties, there is a need for regulation of the minimum standard of system design, installation and image quality recorded by these systems,” says Pauline Norstrom. “This will also ensure that the private security industry continues to be able to provide high quality CCTV evidence to the Police for the greater good of the public.”

The real danger to the reputation of CCTV technology comes from non-specialist installers who are largely unaware aware of current best practice or standards. The BSIA is fully supportive of appropriate regulation to ensure that schemes are designed to be effective and that CCTV is indeed only used for appropriate purposes. With the publishing of the report, the industry is now one step closer to achieving this goal.

With a rich and varied history, the scent of scandal can be found in the fabric of the building back to its roots in the 13th Century right up to the present day. Brocket Hall, as it is known today, was built by renowned architect James Paine for the owner Sir Mathew Lamb in 1760. However, the Hall stands on the site of two predecessors, the original of which was built in 1239.

AVIATOR INVESTS IN TOP FLIGHT SECURITY A £50,000 security upgrade has enabled Multiflight in Yorkshire to meet recent and demanding changes in Department of Transport regulations. The upgrade was developed by Keybury Fire and Security.

Multiflight operates a 5-acre site adjoining Leeds Bradford International Airport. It has 270 approved users of the facility, including 70 of its own staff, Yorkshire Air Ambulance personnel and deals with 3,000 flights a year.

Central to the upgrade brief was the desire to maximise the use of existing equipment while at the same time investing in new technology, taking into account the array of buildings and services on the site including: executive passenger and aircraft handling, aircraft management, fuelling, hangarage, aircraft charter, maintenance and flight training.

Keybury developed a hybrid system that enabled this to happen, with analogue CCTV equipment installed just five years ago now integrated with high definition digital camera technology.

Keybury chose to install the Paxton Net2 access control system which covers 13 doors and

Stadium gets HD upgrade Amsterdam ArenA upgrades security command centre with a solution to improve visitor safety and stadium video security.

The Amsterdam ArenA, with a capacity of 52,960, is the home of AFC Ajax and has more than two million visitors every year for football matches, concerts and dance festivals. Four years ago it was recognised that while the old, analogue CCTV system at the venue was still entirely functional, it lacked High Definition (HD), efficient image storage and face recognition technology. The legacy security system also lacked user friendliness and efficiency for the changing needs of the ArenA – as a result the decision was made to source and deploy an improved system.

Replacing the CCTV system was just one part of the command centre’s renovation challenge - the entire control room needed to be expanded to provide space for additional CCTV operators.

Further space was also required to facilitate a number of larger monitors and also room for safety and security employees to receive directions ahead of large-scale events.

The system incorporates CCTV where ten new 180-degree high definition panoramic cameras have been installed, improving and replacing fixed cameras. These cameras provide general overview observation as well as close ups at ‘pinch points’ – entrances and exits.

Camera sites have been carefully chosen and infra-red technology is in place where necessary.

All footage being captured is in real time and provides number plate as well as facial recognition. And whatever is caught on camera can be viewed by those authorised through their PCs, smartphones and tablets – wherever they may be.

Keybury was able to use existing underground analogue CCTV cables as part of the new IP system network, minimising disruption during the project and furthermore, costs.

The new system is providing enhanced security for both Multiflight staff and its customers, says managing director, Steve Borrowdale, “The very nature of our operation means we need optimum security, not only so that we are compliant with industry regulations, but because it is a vital aspect of our service to customers and our responsibility to staff.”

Switching between multiple cameras was another challenge for the ArenA as this process was complicated via the old system.

CCTV operators had to memorise all camera numbers and their positions in the stadium to switch between them quickly when an alert came in from a steward. During large-scale events, numerous alerts would come in simultaneously making it difficult for security staff to quickly and efficiently monitor for potential problem areas.

Amsterdam ArenA required a new system that would improve safety without causing any disturbance for visitors. The stadium discourages police presence in the stadium as a matter of policy and as a result a first-rate digital safety system was required to spot any disturbances as quickly as possible. ArenA stewards and stadium security guards are then called upon to handle the situation in an attempt to avoid the need for further assistance from the police.

The system takes photos and the images can be sent directly to stewards or security guards via email to assist them in identifying groups or individuals that may be causing a disturbance. Over the last two years Sony has implemented a completely new video management system in the ArenA control room. The system uses 120 Sony HD cameras placed in and around the whole stadium. The project was completed with the introduction of a 3D user interface.

The new 3D interface has reportedly improved usability, as CCTV operators can quickly determine exactly where cameras are situated and, with a couple of clicks, images will appear on-screen.

Operators can now scan the stadium and surrounding areas via a much simpler process, boosting operators’ ability to spot irregularities and potential trouble spots from the command centre.

Entire HD-SDI range launched COP Security has launched a new HDSDI range comprising of Express HD cameras; IR Lab HD cameras with wide dynamic range (WDR); COP Security HD DVRs with up to 4Tb of on-board storage; and a complete range of media converters.

aunching an entire HD-SDI range at once, Gareth Rhodes, marketing manager at COP Security said: “HD-SDI technology enables Full HD, 1920x1080 pixel resolution digital images to be transmitted over coaxial cable. It is installed in the same way as analogue CCTV, but has the resolution benefits of IP, with none of the bandwidth issues. HD-SDI also allows installers to re-use analogue coaxial cables on site, potentially reducing installation costs.”

The camera range includes fixed internal and external domes, integrated IR cameras and vandal-resistant IR domes – for day and nighttime use. All cameras use Sony, 2.1 megapixel sensors and provide 1080p, real-time video or 1080p video at 50 fps in some cases. Lens options include 2.8 to 12mm, 3.3 to 12mm varifocal and 4mm fixed. An on-screen menu for easy set-up and commissioning comes as standard.

The COP Security HD DVR has four channels and a choice of 1, 2 or 4Tb of on-board storage, using Western Digital Silk Stream AV HDDs. H.264 compression technology enables real-time, 25 fps recording on all channels simultaneously, at 1080p or 720p resolution. Video outputs include HDMI, BNC and VGA, with audio recording supported on all channels. Remote access for viewing by PC, smartphone or tablet is also enabled and COP Security will help installers set up remote network access to the DVRs as part of the Advantage Plus support package.

Media converters include HD-SDI to HDMI for monitors; HD-SDI to analogue; HD-SDI repeater; HD-SDI repeater with RS485; HD-SDI splitter and a range of mounts and connector boxes to complete the range. COP Security is also introducing two new LG LED HDMI monitors to coincide with its HD-SDI product launch. They are available in both 22” & 24” sizes and deliver crystal-clear images through a LED back-lit screen with full HD resolution.

As you are launching a complete range of HDSDI products, are you seeing a lot of interest in this technology as well as for IP and analogue?

ideadvances, the demand for higher quality CCTV becomes apparent. We always knew that when the price structure met the demand of our customers a tipping point would be reached.

Since the launch of our HD-SDI range many customers have shown not only high interest in the products, but also in the technological side of how these new systems will work. Analogue sales still greatly outstrip that of HD-SDI, but this market continues to grow day by day.

What are the attractions of going down the HDSDI route for installers?

I believe that when our customers looks at the benefits of HD-SDI they see two main advantages – a system delivering up to 4x the resolution of a top specification analogue camera and a familiarity with the installation process they have used for most of their working career. A massive selling advantage for our customers is the comparisons between HD-SDI technology and HD television/HD channels. It gives the end user a connection with a security product they would usually know very little about, much in the same way smartphone access has massively helped DVR sales and upgrades. We have found that the end user is very much familiar with the likes of HD televisions and HD TV channels, and this very much helps them to understand the differences between the two technologies.

What types of applications would the range suit?

HD-SDI can be used on almost any application you would use a standard analogue camera, It’s all down to whether the end user is willing to pay the difference between HD and analogue technologies. Although the price of HD-SDI is becoming very competitive against analogue, we have found it is being used more on higher end installs and upgrades.

Is the idea behind the launch of the range to make the total system specification as simple as possible?

The installation process of HD-SDI is almost identical to that of analogue, although customers must understand the limitations of the equipment. Issues such as the length of cable runs and the lack of ancillary equipment can still cause installers problems if they haven’t been properly informed. Manufacturers will develop more and more HD-SDI equipment as time moves on to help resolve most of the current issue. THE POWER TO PROTECT Electricity is key for the security industry so any disruption, dip or surge must be avoided in order to maintain protection. Here we look at the supply and the demand… verything about a business – the lights, the computers, the fax machine, even the office microwave – runs on power. And a sudden power failure can have catastrophic consequences, draining vital man hours, missing potential customers and losing precious data.

For security systems the power supply is essential – not only does an outage prevent CCTV images from being recorded for example, but it also puts premises, staff and stock at risk. While intruder alarms are backed up with a rechargeable battery supply (usually built into the panel) other security measures, depending on the installation and location, aren’t always guaranteed power.

The amount of energy used by UK businesses has mushroomed in recent years. Every office is wired up to the internet, and each new development contains high-tech, energy-draining accessories. As a result, the UK is running the risk of a serious power shortage. It was reported in June this year that “Britain could face a return to Seventies-style power rationing to prevent blackouts” (Daily Mail) and “The risk of power blackouts in Britain within 18 months” (Guardian).

The news came amid warnings that the country may not be producing enough energy to keep the lights on by 2015. The reports even claimed that offices and factories could be ‘bribed’ to close for up to four hours a day during the winter to prevent households losing power.

Energy regulator Ofgem said the country faced an ‘unprecedented challenge’ as coal-fired plants are closed by European Union diktats on the environment. The regulator warned of ‘faster than anticipated tightening of electricity margins towards the middle of this decade’. It forecast that if there was no major action to head off the crisis, the risk of blackouts would increase from the current chance of one in 47 years to as little as one in four.

To prevent such a crisis, Ofgem has announced new powers for National Grid, which could come into effect before the end of this year. Businesses that sign up to the deal will be told to shut down between 4pm and 8pm on cold evenings. National Grid will compensate firms for the energy they do not use at well-above the market rate of about £50 per Megawatt hour (MWh). Rewards would

range from £500 to £15,000 per MWh. Officials claim the closures would not unduly inconvenience factories and firms, as they could open on Saturday mornings to catch up on lost work. However they do not go any way to state whether or not switching off security systems sits outside the boundaries of the deal.

The majority of British companies have done nothing to insulate themselves against a power cut. Securing the supply of power for security equipment is not simply a question of hiring a back-up generator; each company’s requirements vary according to the size of their facilities, the measures they have in place and the state of their installed equipment.

Back-up requirements can vary considerably according to a company’s facilities. A facility which frequently suffers mains power outages represents a major threat and experts believe that firms operating in such conditions should make a back-up power solution a priority. Businesses should also consider their back-up power solution when they are planning to expand, because larger premises will often require more back-up power is required to maintain operations.

It is also important to consider the age of a back-up solution. Equipment which lies unused over several years could prove incapable of handling a major power emergency. For this reason companies should regularly test equipment with a view to replacing generators between five and ten years old, depending on the

complete loss of power is known as a blackout, brownout conditions also exist. Brownouts are identical to sags but of much longer duration, and are generally more serious. They occur when the mains supply capacity is insufficient for its present load. Depending on the supply company response, brownouts could last for several hours in extreme circumstances.

Power damage

The good news for security and fire solutions providers is that they should be well placed when it comes to finding a solution that is ideally suited to their specific requirements 44

However, power outages are not the only mains-borne events that can damage sensitive equipment; power quality issues can also cause equipment damage. Spikes, for example, are short duration rapid voltage transitions that can be induced by thermostats or other equipment switching heavy electrical currents, or by power supply companies performing load switching. Nearby lightning strikes are also particularly serious sources.

Spikes inflict both positive and negative voltage excursions which can damage or destroy electrical and electronic components. Additionally, they can corrupt software, causing a problem that becomes compounded if corrupted files are subjected to further processing before detection.

Voltage excursions can appear as surges or sags as well as spikes. Surges are sustained voltage increases above normal lasting for more than one cycle, typically appearing after a large load is switched off or a substation performs load switching. With a relatively long duration, they can degrade switch-mode power supply components and lead to premature hardware failures. Sags are drops in the mains supply that can last for several cycles. Similar in character to negative spikes, although of much greater duration, sags are common events usually caused by switching on large loads such as air conditioning or rotating machinery. Sags can reduce mains voltage levels enough to trigger computer re-booting.

Electrical noise can be caused by lightning strikes as well as load switching, cable faults, nearby radio-frequency equipment and other sources.

Problems can also arise from harmonics typically generated by non-linear loads, which can draw current from the mains supply in large peaks. Harmonics cause a disproportionate rise in current, elevate temperatures and possibly lead to component failures and general equipment overheating.

Furthermore, whereas a

Switching supply Today, there is little doubt when it comes to security and fire solutions that we are in the midst of a power revolution with growing interest in switch mode power supply units (PSUs), over more traditional linear options, for intruder, access control, CCTV and fire systems. This is being fuelled by a compelling commercial and practical argument for more energy efficient systems whose electricity costs can in some cases be nearly half that of the conventional alternatives, whatever the size of the installation.

With the number and type of switch mode PSUs being brought to market greater than ever before, the good news for security and fire solutions providers is that they should be well placed when it comes to finding a solution that is ideally suited to their specific requirements.

According to Ian Moore of Elmdene International: “When it comes to power technology, in particular, switch mode PSUs are, undoubtedly, going to remain a key focus of our own product development efforts. The clear advantages of switch mode technology in operation are starkly illustrated when the typical efficiency of linear power supplies at 50-55 per cent is contrasted with that of the

latest switch mode models which can reach anywhere between 80-87 per cent. This is a dramatic difference.”

Looking in more detail at the operational cost savings, Elmdene’s calculations suggest, under typical operating conditions, when upgrading from a 1A linear PSU, with a power of 23.4 Watts, to a 1A switch mode model and 12.6 Watts, an annual saving of £12.24 could, potentially, be realised. This is based on the operating cost over twelve months for linear at £26.59 compared to £14.35 when a switch mode option is employed, a 46 per cent reduction. For an upgrade involving a 5A PSU the comparable figure for an annual saving would be £30.29 or 30 per cent. For these calculations electricity costs are assumed to be 13p/KWh. The value of any saving will obviously soon add-up when multiple PSUs, across large and multiple sites, are factored in leading to a much more favourable return on investment.

“Another key benefit from the greener approach being offered through switch mode PSUs, is that these efficient solutions tend to offer enhanced reliability and longer life in the field – as they build-up less heat – and, consequently mitigate the risk of unexpected and potentially costly system failures - a key consideration,” says Ian. “More power-efficient options are also less likely to generate interference with other devices and so widen installation options on site and minimise any conflict with non-security or fire operations.”

Growing green systems The requirement for switch mode power solutions has been brought into much sharper focus against the backdrop of organisations being encouraged by the Government, and the wider community, to actively seek out ‘green’ solutions to minimise their carbon footprints.

Looking ahead the economic argument, on the back of rocketing energy costs, and the heightened awareness of all things ‘green’, means that now, more than ever, organisations are scrutinising all aspects of their operations against this backdrop, particularly, where something if left unchanged is likely to have a detrimental impact on their bottom line.

Therefore, the imperative to come up with more efficient, sustainable, systems from an energy standpoint has certainly fuelled demand for new technologies such as switch mode power supplies. As awareness grows of the operational and cost of ownership benefits that the transition from linear to switch mode options delivers, and how this move can link in with environmental commitments, the take-up of ‘green’ power technology is likely to accelerate still further for security-related systems.

The UPS choice According to government reports, in the last five years, premises in England and Wales have experienced approximately 4.9 million planned and 96 million unplanned power interruptions.

There are several types of power interruption and each affects electrical equipment differently. For example, a ‘sag’ is a reduction in power voltage that can lead to equipment locking up, while a ‘surge’ is an increase in power voltage that can permanently damage some systems, while complete power failure can cause businesses to cease operating altogether.

Most standby power systems will involve the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to bridge between the mains supply and the backup supply.

There are two main types of UPS: offline and online. Offline UPS are attractive because they have lower capital costs. However, when an offline system operates, there is a momentary break in the supply as it switches from mains to UPS. This may be acceptable for non-critical business applications such as heating and lighting, but it is unlikely to offer acceptable protection for any IT-related equipment.

An online UPS is generally more expensive to buy but can monitor the power supply and automatically switch over to standby power with no break in the supply if a fault is detected. It can also protect against power surges, and is more suited for mission-critical applications such as security systems.

By operating two or more UPS in parallel you can increase the overall system efficiency because each UPS is more likely to be running at, or near, its ideal operating point. Another benefit of having parallel units is that they are physically separate and you can locate them in different rooms. This minimises the risk of an accident taking out the entire UPS installation at once.

Modular topology comprises several smaller UPS units that are housed in a single cabinet. This option allows you to add to standby power in smaller units so that you do not have to buy and run an oversized UPS to account for future expansion. You can also more easily remove units if you need less standby power in the future.

You need an independent back-up power source as well as a UPS to provide standby power. Traditionally, businesses use batteries, a diesel generator, or a combination of the two. However there is now an alternative available and in commercial use in the UK - fuel cells, which offer both standby and continuous power for stationary and portable applications.

PRODUCT TEST Panasonic WV-SP509E Network Camera

he Panasonic WV-SP509E is a 1080p Day / Night network camera. The unit is fitted with 3.1 Megapixel MOS Sensor and offers a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The camera has a memory card slot that supports SDXC/SDHC/SD cards for manual recording and upon network failure. There are three terminal alarm inputs, one output, a BNC output for adjustment of the CCTV image while commissioning, a microphone and audio input.

The unit can be powered using PoE or 12v dc.

The camera is ONVIF compliant.

Out of the box the Panasonic WV-SP509E camera is supplied with an installation manual and CD. The autorun CD gives the installer the option to run or install to the local machine the Panasonic EasyIpSetup Utility. The utility is used to scan the local network for any cameras and allow their IP addresses to be set, this was performed easily with the tool. Once on the network the camera’s webpage was accessed and the firmware checked against their website.

The firmware was a version out, so an update was performed; the latest firmware had just been released. When upgrading, the camera warns the user the upgrade will take 9 minutes, this is worth noting if you are deploying a large number of cameras on site and an upgrade is required. On site time can be saved by performing all the firmware upgrades in the office before shipping to site if possible.

focusing of the camera, this process takes less than a minute. An extra optical zoom facility is also available that allows the setting of the final image. Once positioned the installer can digitally zoom in and then move the image in any direction to fine-tune to meet the requirements of the view.

The WV-SP509E has two privacy zones that are simple boxes and does not allow for any dragging of the box edges, although it is not a very popular option be aware if the view you are going to record does need more than two individual privacy areas.

VIQS or Variable Image Quality allows for two user definable areas to be created and in those areas a higher image quality can be set, leaving the excluded area at a lower image quality and therefore create a lower image size/bit rate, ideal to help with network bandwidth.

Face detection is included in the camera and when activated easily identified a face in the image with no difficulty or the installer having to configure any part of the software. The face was highlighted by a box when testing and when activated, the alarm, like all the other alarms, was sent via the on board XML Notifications to two separate receivers that can be programmed into the unit.

The camera offers four Video Motion Detection areas. Each of these areas is able to be set to their own sensitivity and the alarms then sent out via the XML notifications to the control

The WV-SP509E has an email alarm facility where the camera can be configured to send alarms via SMTP or POP or alternatively send alarm pre- and post-image to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server.

The on-board SD card recording allows the installer to set the camera to record locally either JPG or H264 images. The recording can be triggered manually or via the on-board input while pre- and post-frames per second covering x number of images can be set, e.g. 0.5fps for 3000 pictures.

For the viewing of live images the camera offers a nice function called Multi-Screen. The Multi-Screen facility allows the installer to configure four groups of up to four cameras to appear in the live webpage and therefore make a viewing area that does not just include the one camera, which is ideal for receptions etc. The live viewing page offers the user the ability to capture a still image of the view should an operator witness an event they wish to save.

The image can then be printed or saved to the local computer.

Language selection is available from the viewing page where the user can simply select their chosen language and the software updates itself instantly.

In summary the Panasonic WV-SP509E offers the installer a simple to setup network camera that offers all of the features you would expect from a modern camera. The alarm functions as well as the Multi-Screen viewing offer a user a versatile, all-round camera.

Alarm receiving centre’s (ARC’s) more than often answer their installer’s phone lines outside of normal working hours and co-ordinate their engineers for out of hours breakdown calls.

Although there are escalation processes for the engineer not responding and accepting the request for the breakdown callout, little thought is given to the well being of the engineer when they are actually out and about in the early hours.

The engineer is in fact a lone worker and as such businesses are generally unaware of the threat of a potential prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter & Corporate Homicide Act 2007.

he Sony SNC-VB630 is a 1080/60p Day / Night network camera. The unit is fitted with 2.14 Megapixel Exmor CMOS Sensor which improves image acquisition with its low noise characteristics and offers a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The camera has an SD memory

card slot for manual recording and upon network failure two terminal alarm inputs, two outputs, BNC output for adjustment while commissioning, microphone and audio input. The unit can be powered using PoE, 12v dc or 24v ac. The camera is ONVIF profile S compliant.

Out of the box the camera is supplied with an installation manual and CD. The manual guides the installer on the physical elements of the camera and how to start the CD to configure the unit. The CD starts by opening a screen where the user can

select the SNC easy IP setup tool that is used to configure the IP address of the camera. The installer itself is downloaded to the local machine to run and is not installed, and therefore prevents possible site issues where PCs may be locked down by the IT department. When the tool ran, it quickly located the camera on the network and its IP address was easily changed.

As a first step after logging into the cameras webpage the firmware version was checked against the Sony website and found to be a version behind. The new firmware had only just been released so an upgrade was performed easily through the Sony SNC Toolbox software which was downloaded from their site, the toolbox however was not available on the CD. After installing the camera for an external view the on-board easyfocus option was used and the camera automatically set itself up to give a crystal clear image.

The installer is given many options within the configuration of the camera to fine tune for site use. A Superimpose function allows the installer to set three locations on the image where they can overlay the date and time, user defined text e.g.

‘Front Door Camera’, the codec being used e.g.

H.264 High 8000kbps/CBR/25fps or a box that will display when an event has occurred on the camera e.g. Video Motion Detection. The superimpose function also allows for a PNG logo to be uploaded and shown on the image.

The camera offers privacy masking with 20 definable areas where the installer can even set the colour that is used to block that area of the view. A Quality of Service (a way to prioritise information on the IP network) option is also available.

The on-board motion detection allows for the configuration of four zones within the cameras field of view. Each zone’s corner can be dragged across the camera image to create the desired zone. The zones themselves have the standard sensitivity settings as you would expect.

VMF is a function that allows for detection of intrusion into a designated zone, passing over a line that is defined in the view, looking for a left object and the removal of an object. Three filters are given that allow for any of the analytic detections to be set within them. The passing of the line object lets the installer choose how the alarm is triggered either crossing over one side or both sides of the line. Testing of the analytics proved accurate where objects left or removed

The camera also boasts event conditions where the user can configure a series of events that need to occur before an alarm is raised, an example of this is input 1 on the rear of the camera must activate followed by motion detection being activate within 10 seconds followed by Face Detection within a further 10 seconds. Face detection rounds up the impressive list of on-board analytics where once again zones are created on the image, sensitivity and detection size are set.

Camera Tampering was the last function tested.

Once enabled, if the camera is moved from its original view an alarm is generated therefore helping to prevent those situations where cameras are knocked or intentionally moved to not view and incident taking place.

For the mobile user the camera was tested on an iPad through Safari and Chrome. To view the image the user simply enters the camera IP address and the image is visible in the browser and automatically scaled to fill the screen.

The Sony SNC-VB630 offers the installer an easy to setup modern IP camera with many features that enable the camera to fulfil most demanding site applications with the on-board analytics and features taking the camera to the next level.

Nobody likes to fall out with their family members, but when a father/son disagreement came to a head in China recently the end results were caught on CCTV. The pair were involved in a prolonged car chase amid busy traffic in June, which ended in a crash that left both vehicles, a Mercedes limo and a BMW wrecked. Catch a falling toddler!

This dramatic footage shows a two-and-a-halfyear-old girl falling from a fifth floor window, only to be caught by passing delivery men.

CCTV footage shows the men waiting below as the toddler dangled from the window in Ninghai, China. As she plummeted, they dashed to the correct spot to catch the girl, who had been left home alone while sleeping, but then had climbed on to the window sill after she awoke.

APPOINTMENTS Geoffrey Pye

Jim Hansford Securi-Guard has appointed experienced security professional Jim Hansford as Business Development Manager in the company’s fire and security division. Jim brings a wealth of experience in both the sales and installation of fire and security systems after spending 24 years in the security business. Prior to his new role, Jim spent almost ten years as a Fire Systems Consultant with ADT Fire and Security, covering Devon and Cornwall.

In his new role at Securi-Guard, Jim will primarily develop new business among electrical contractors, architects and consultants – identified as key target areas for development.

Phil Burns Revader Security has appointed Phil Burns as General Manager. Phil has over 30 years’ experience within the electronics industry and has previously held senior board level positions at large manufacturing organisations both in the UK and Asia. Phil will be responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations, whilst overseeing the imminent introduction of a new range of rapid redeployable PTZ and 360-degree camera models.

“Phil’s extensive knowledge of operational issues and the manufacturing process makes him the ideal candidate to provide leadership to Revader’s engineering, sales and technical support teams,” said Chairman Stuart Caldecourt. “I am confident that Phil will be able to make a major contribution towards our ongoing success and in particular the launch of our new products which I believe will create exciting new business opportunities for our fast growing worldwide network of business partners, installers and system integrators.”

ISM has announced the appointment of Geoffrey Pye as General Manager. Geoff, who is the former MD of Optex, will head up the ISM team, reporting to the Board with a remit to achieve what Stephen Smith Sales and Marketing Director describes as: “Bold but attainable growth targets in the next five years.”

Dean Terry Elmdene International has announced the appointment of Dean Terry as a Regional Sales Manager. Mark Hirst Mark Hirst has joined the professional security division of Samsung Techwin as a Business Development Manager. Mark has spent the last five years working for Evolution Electronic Security as an Area Sales Manager and has also performed sales roles during his 15 year career in the electronic security industry at Secom and ADT Fire and Security.

Reporting to Simon Shawley, General Manager, UK and Ireland for Samsung Techwin Europe, Mark will be responsible for developing relationships with key market influencers, including consultants, specifiers, installers and system integrators, in order to identify new sales opportunities for Samsung Techwin’s comprehensive range of IP network based video surveillance solutions.
