ONWARDS AND DOWN SOUTH With IFSEC 2013 behind us we can now all start looking forward to an alternative venue for our early summer citybreak as the event moves down south in 2014 to London. t was the talk of the show, so don’t let anyone in marketing fool you - the chat in the aisles of IFSEC 2013 was not IP, HD or PSIM it was the change in venue for the UK’s biggest security event and what this might mean for the industry. In the main, the news was discussedpositively and the re-booking figures released by UBM Live back this up as they report that 87% of the exhibitors to the final Birmingham event have signed up for next year. Apparently this number is higher at this stage of the year than would have been expected so the organisers certainly seem to have hit upon something. As to why the move has struck a chord could rest upon a number of factors. Firstly, a change in the location could freshen up the event. There are many people who feel that a move away from Birmingham will liven up the show and the lure of the unknown will excite the industry. Another of the big attractions for holding the event in London is the potential capture of a more international audience. We spoke to a number of exhibitors who told us that the foreign visitors to their stands flew in to London, travelled to Birmingham and then flew back to London for a few days before returning home. By taking the extra travelling out of the equation, perhaps a London-based show will not only attract more international visitors but also mean that they visit the event on more than one occasion during the week. And one of the big reasons why the move to London in 2014 could be an inspirational decision is the fact that the security market is changing. The show is no longer simply a chance for security installers to simply walk around an event to do a little ‘tyre kicking’ on the new products. The type of people installing security equipment is changing as are the types of systems that they are fitting. By holding IFSEC in the heart of the IT capital of the UK and in the midst of a concentration of end-users, the organisers are broadening the appeal of visiting and exhibiting at the show for event newcomers. Of course some have raised doubts about the move citing that north-based installers won’t travel to London, and as a result another organiser has stepped into the gap left at the NEC to launch a new event to be held one month before IFSEC 2014. This second event, organised by Clarion, is placing a lot on the issues surrounding car parking and travel, with statistics showing that the NEC is within a 3-hour drive time for 86% of all BSIA members. Unfortunately, according to the RAC, the NEC is only just over 2 hours away from the centre of London. Travel is a factor however that UBM Live has taken on board and in this edition we speak exclusively to organisers Simon Parker and Charlie Cracknell about the reasoning behind the move and their goals for the future. For the sake of a successful industry, we need a successful show, so we hope that the stats from London 2014 will prove that the decision to move south was a good one.

Finance sector set for surveillance investment 70% of city and finance businesses who took part in a recent survey said that they intend to invest in IP surveillance technology over the next year. According to a focus group session held as part of the inaugural Security Technology Experience (STE) event organised by Quadrant Security Group, adapting to changing security threats is the biggest driver behind the investment. And while investing in high definition, integrated IP CCTV technology is a key priority for the sector, largely to enhance forensic security measures, interest in

Monitoring world market growth drivers revealed Commercial and retail end users will drive the growth of remote monitoring services in intelligent buildings, accounting for more than 80 percent of the $400 million world market in 2016, according to a new study by IMS Research, part of IHS. Remote monitoring in intelligent buildings is a service offered by thirdparty companies that audit and report on the operational performance of a building. The services have two key selling points. First, auditors can make recommendations to save energy costs by determining, for instance, a more efficient schedule for the building automation system. Second, the building owner can reduce internal staffing costs for the facility by using a third-party service provider. “Remote monitoring services are gaining increased traction as building owners find significant savings to be made, in terms of both decreasing energy bills and reducing staffing costs,” said Sam Grinter, market analyst for

predictive technologies is also high. 55% of focus group participants said investment in intelligent video analytics is likely in the next twelve months. Enhancing capabilities such as motion detection, object tracking, object classification and behaviour recognition appealed in terms of addressing changing security threats and also in relation to optimising existing internal data systems. Improving customer experience through video surveillance biometrics also emerged as a predicted trend. According to the focus group session 45% are thinking of investing in this type of technology – particularly facial recognition – with 27% citing enhanced customer experience, from recognising VIP clients to improving staff clearance protocols, as a key driver. Finally it emerged that 20% are likely to invest in advanced audio analytics, designed to support video surveillance solutions by integrating sound type and pattern recognition capable of, for example, alerting security teams to escalating noise levels that may indicate a potential threat.

In brief Secom has acquired fire company Receptor to enable the company to offer a suite of both fire and security systems. The business entity management and operations of Receptor will remain unchanged at present. Smart R Distribution has been appointed as European distributor for Vanderbilt Industries access control and video management systems. Luminite has appointed Security Buying Group as the distributor of its Genesis wireless PIR detection systems.

building technologies at IHS. “The drive to reduce overheads has been reinforced over the last five years by tough economic conditions. Commercial and retail end users have been the fastest to take advantage of remote monitoring services in intelligent buildings, because the slashing of operational expenses has been a higher priority for them than for government or institutional end users”. Remote monitoring service providers have found success with commercial and retail end users by demonstrating the effectiveness of the systems in trial deployments. Then, once the return on investment is demonstrated, services are rolled out throughout the wider building portfolio. The services in intelligent buildings are looked upon as a competitive advantage, which explains why adoption has spread relatively quickly.

Security installation tax claims Following the 2012 Finance Bill, a specialist in the field of capital allowances, is urging fire and security system contractors to tell their customers that both current and previous installations can be claimed against tax, using capital allowances, but that they should be done before April 2014. The 2012 Finance Bill introduced a transitional period which runs until April 2014. If a commercial property is sold within this period then it can be treated in the same way it would have been previously. Before April 2012 you could choose when, and whether, you made a capital allowances claim on your commercial property. The owner does not have to make a claim for capital allowances before he/she concludes the transaction, but they will have to agree to the fixed value requirement within two years. The next time the property is sold, even if it is the very next day, then the new rules apply and capital allowances must be considered as if it were post April 2014. According to Portal Tax if the current owner acts now they can claim the full capital allowances back for themselves. If they do nothing, the future owner of the property may benefit instead. Data compiled by Portal Tax has revealed the top ten items by volume on which tax has been claimed back. Fire, communication and security systems (such as alarms, cameras and other equipment) is listed at number eight in the chart.

IR booth shows value of lighting Raytec did something a little different this year at IFSEC by hosting an Infra-Red photo booth. The company asked all unsuspecting event visitors “Have you ever wondered what you look like under Infra-Red?” then invited them into the IR photo booth to find out and have a little fun in the dark - with props provided! In addition, there was the chance to win a Kindle Fire for the best photo each day of the show. Captured using VARIO Infra-Red LED lighting, subjects found out how they looked under IR and in complete and utter darkness. Buzz Coates, Raytec’s Global Business Development Manager says: “It made a real change for visitors to the show to be able to have a little fun in the IR photo booth – dressing up in the dark and pulling some funny faces. But I guess there is a serious message too, that to deliver good quality pictures in low light, even with the very best cameras, requires good quality lighting.” The winners of the best photos each day were Stefan Bange of Avigilon, Kate Tompsett, Jon Forbes and Chris Owen from Secure Engineering UK, Colin Beech and Keith Harwood of Wembley Crime Prevention and Terry Alan from Security Solutions

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Mark Page, Sales Director of Stanley Security Solutions - part of the Stanley Black & Decker Group. People often associate the Stanley brand with tools, how difficult is it to transition the brand to security? The association works in our favour as the Stanley brand is so well known and respected. Stanley has been producing security ironmongery since the 1800’s so the progression into electronic security is not as surprising as it might at first seem. We benefit from our tools business branding, e.g. campaigns such as ‘does your security measure up’ where a Stanley tape measure provides a positive link between the sectors. We have changed the logo in order to make the brand more global while still keeping the recognised values that we hold so dear. Stanley is one of the world’s largest security brands. What plans do you have in the UK? We have aggressive growth plans designed to become leaders in the UK security sector for volume and quality. We are already number one in Sweden and France and number two in many other European countries. Our prominence in Europe helps to support our UK growth as many businesses expect ‘borderless’ products and services. What is the most important aspect when entering a new market? Choosing the right combination of sales and marketing activities to make the most impact is important. Knowing where to maximise strengths and get some good traction with early wins will build confidence with customers and within our own teams. It’s been vital to select the correct partners to support our development and eliminate any barriers. We frequently review where the wins are coming from and set achievable sales targets to motivate our sales team. You have your own purpose-built ARC in the UK. What are your plans to populate it with profitable income? Our NSI Gold state-of-the-art monitoring centre is a main differentiator for us as we continue to develop our best-in-class service. All new product ranges are being reviewed for opportunities to utilise the monitoring centre and provide additional value to our customers. How important are retailers within your customer portfolio? Retailers are obvious targets for crime, making them very security aware with the highest standards. They tend to be advanced in security system integration as they see the value it can bring to their bottom line. The nature of the high street means that retailers adopt new technology at a rapid pace and expect their partners to do the same. We always need to be at the top of our game and offer solutions that generate more revenue or savings. As a solutions provider we are able to offer the best products for the customer in terms of functionality, future-proofing and budget. For example, we have the ability to offer both RF and AM electronic article surveillance systems as we are not tied to a particular technology. Have you considered opening your ARC for 3rd party monitoring? The ARC offers us many opportunities both now and in the future, including 3rd party monitoring. Our focus on fulfilling customer requirements will direct our tactics going forward. In particular we want to work with those businesses that do not have these fantastic resources in order to offer a total package.

INTERVIEW

LOOKING FORWARD TO LONDON With IFSEC 2013 now behind us, thoughts turn to the London ExCeL in 2014 and beyond. We meet the organisers of the event…

Charlie Cracknell, UBM Live

“We conduct extensive research every year, however increasingly over a four year period our attention was drawn to the rise in demand of moving to London” 12

s we know, 2013 was the last time that the security event would be held in Birmingham with the show relocating back to its London roots in 2014. This was one of the main topics of conversation during this year’s event so PSI caught up with Simon Parker, Managing Director and Charlie Cracknell, Event Director of organisers UBM Live to discuss the thinking behind the move and to look at the steps being taken to make the new home a happy one for everyone in the security industry.

Simon Parker, UBM Live

A

How was IFSEC 2013 for you? SP: I have been associated with the brand for around 16 years and this was, without question, one of the most exciting years for us because of the changes for 2014 that we announced ahead of the event. In simple terms we had a great series of events across the Protection and Management Week, with the visitors moving from one show to another and gained positive results from the two points of feedback that we have; attendance figures and exhibitor re-bookings. As it stands (early June) the re-booking number for 2014 is at 87%, higher than it ordinarily would be at this stage, so this is a strong indicator that people had a good show. The reason behind the growth of the show has largely been down to the additional content that we have organised along with the exhibition itself. Historically trade shows have been about large stands packed full of equipment, but today that is not enough of a draw for visitors so we have set up the IFSEC Academy which is a stand-alone series of seminars, conferences and workshops that make the show much more than halls of stands. CC: In terms of the Academy, in order for it to work, it was important from the start that we didn’t just host what we thought the market wanted. Over the course of the last 18 months we have invested in a customer insight programme “a day in the life of a customer” research along with partners such as NSI, BSIA, SSAIB, SyI and ASIS to focus in on their markets and ascertain what their members want from the scheme. Delivering content that is not manufacturer brand led is vitally important as visitors have to be able to take something tangible from their time at the event. Obviously if people want a vendor specific presentation they can get that from the exhibition, but we wanted to make sure that the Academy was a real educational platform for them.

With that success in mind, why are you leaving the NEC and moving the event to London for 2014? SP: We conduct extensive research every year, however increasingly over a four year period our attention was drawn to the rise in demand of moving to London. We then undertook 18 months of focused research into all areas of the event to ensure that the move catered for the whole market. As with any brand, in order to grow, changes need to be made and the product needs to be refreshed. As a result of the significant support we received from across the whole buying chain around relocating to London, we’ve listened to the market and felt that this was the right time to make the move. IFSEC International will continue to unite all parts of the buying chain in a truly integrated event, attracting more integrators, end-users and international visitors than ever before. What was the initial reaction to the news and how has this changed with time? SP: You get a mix of reactions whenever you change something. This event actually started in London but moved to the NEC where we have had 16 fantastic years, however people have become used to staying in the same hotels and going to the same places each year in Birmingham so they might be wary. Change can be daunting but London has many exciting opportunities on offer and will be another new experience that visitors can enjoy. After the initial reactions, people are excited about the possibilities that London will present and the rebookings confirm the appeal of a fresh venue. Are you confident that installers will travel south? SP: In terms of making the show appealing to installers we have to make sure that we keep hosting an event that they want to attend wherever they are from. Essentially they want to come to IFSEC to do business, to gain knowledge and to network. We plan to make it easy for them in terms of their travelling and accommodation needs as we can help arrange all of that for them. Also there is the brand loyalty

INTERVIEW

(continued from page 12)

that exists because people know that when they come to IFSEC they are going to see products, seminars and co-located shows that are not available from any other event. It is our job to make it essential for people to come to IFSEC and that is the attraction of making the journey south. CC: If you look at ISC West, ASIS, Essen or any other major events they see huge international traffic because the brand is so strong. We feel this is the same in the UK, visitors just want to go to IFSEC. And the time for this is right too, with the development of the IT market, the increased influence of government on security and the emergence of new foreign markets, London is now the place to be. We went out into the regions and asked if people would support the show if it moved to London and 92% said they would, the move simply wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t got such a positive reaction. We don’t want to move a Birmingham-based event to London; we want to move IFSEC to London to grow it and to develop it. This is essentially why we’ve had so much success taking the IFSEC brand globally because it is recognised as a brand that delivers for the security market. We have to keep adapting all of the time to ensure we maintain that reputation.

“After the initial reactions, people are excited about the possibilities that London will present and the rebookings confirm the appeal of a fresh venue” 14

Will the move change the ratio of installers and endusers visiting the event? CC: I think there will be an increase in overall attendance, with a rise in end-users rather than a decrease in any other sector. We are going to be placed in the middle of one of the biggest concentrations of end-users in the country, so by nature we can expect these numbers to rise. We are opening up some avenues to business that previously have not been at IFSEC, increasing the potential footprint of the event and developing ways for people to do business rather than just source products. Our 2013 Global Meetings Programme (a series of pre-arranged face-to-face meetings) saw over 280 meetings booked, putting matched people together to do business. These types of benefits are not found at shows that just take the form of an exhibition.

How will you judge if the move to London has been successful? SP: We need to concentrate on the first show then we can look at the visitor numbers and the rebooking figures to see how the event has been successful for exhibitors. Ultimately, we are going to be enhancing the quality of the content even more and we have projected this will result in an increase in the numbers of visitors as they recognise IFSEC as the go to event. Will there be anything different about the show you host in London? CC: The biggest change is that the show is moving to three days and will be held from 17-19 June. In response to market demand, we decided to make the show more concise by packing everything in to a shorter time frame. We won’t try and deliver an event where we expect people just to turn up; it’s all about additional content specifically education and training. In order to maximise the number of visitors to exhibitors’ stands we need to put on seminars and workshops that will attract their potential customers. When you put the whole package together it has to be something that offers the maximum ROI for both the exhibitors and the visitors. Therefore in London we will offer more training and more education in line with what our trade organisation partners tell us is relevant and necessary to the market. At IFSEC you have all of the component parts of the security market under one roof so if we do all we can to bring those facets together then it will be a successful three days for everyone involved. SP: Another critical point is that of the co-located shows, part of the Protection and Management Series. We have a range of shows that make sense being together – it’s not just a random selection of exhibitions occurring on the same days; FIREX International, Safety and Health Expo, Facilities Show and Energy and Environment Expo are shows that encompass other areas that security installers and end-users buy, specify and install.

that in times of austerity they use their limited marketing budgets well.

“It is important for people to keep in mind when looking at a prospective floor plan for an unestablished event, that in times of austerity they use their limited marketing budgets well” 16

For the London show to give ROI would you advise exhibitors (as well as the visitors) not to just turn up and see what happens, but to plan ahead and get involved? CC: IFSEC 2014 is so much more than the three days in June next year – for us it has already started and for maximum lead generation during the event exhibitors need to make sure that they work on getting their message right and to promote it throughout the year. To ensure exhibitors get the most out of their time, we have invested in exhibitor training schemes to help with the lead generation and data management during the show. This helps educate exhibitors to understand that the aim of the exhibitor is not just to collect business cards, but to engage with their potential customers. The show has essentially gone from what was very much a product-led environment in the past to a solutions-based environment today. There is less kit at the show and the messages from exhibitors are tighter with deeper discussion via partnerships that is the successful means to business. In order to ensure visitors get the most out of attending, we help plan their day by providing as much information as possible ahead of the show. Visitors can then identify specific companies they want to engage with and make note of the seminars they don’t want to miss. As you know, there is currently another security event booked in for a month before IFSEC in 2014. Can the UK security market support two exhibitions? SP: I think it is important to concentrate on what we do rather than look at anyone else; we want to continue to provide the market with an event that caters for a broad range of needs. We don’t want the market to become fragmented which could lead to disruption in how the buying chain interacts. It is important for people to keep in mind when looking at a prospective floor plan for an un-established event,

With the global reach of the Internet and the availability of web access, how much longer do you think that exhibitions have left? SP: This is something that keeps us awake at night because you should always be mindful of how what you do could be overtaken by a different approach. I remember that around ten years ago people began saying that we would be doing all of our business online in the future, but what we have found is that the digital side of business works really well alongside the face-to-face angle. The online process gives you the immediacy of the information that you need, whereas the face-to-face gives you the possibilities to build lasting relationships. If you look back in time, business has always been done in a mixture of ways but relationships build business especially when you have a subject such as security and the bigger the deal the more interaction is needed to ensure both parties are able to work together. I think exhibitions have a very rosy future, but we have to make sure that they keep developing in terms of content, technology, social media etc to keep them relevant for the next generation. CC: When we did our research and asked the different generations of visitors of how they wanted to receive information and what content they needed, the youngest generation in the market (2530 year-olds) put equal value on exhibitions and the web. Information is required straight away, but if they need to discuss something then face-to-face is the best option. They still view live, human interaction as a core component of what they do. If you compare this to how the music industry has changed, many people now download their music for instant content but still go to concerts for the live, interaction with the performers and other fans. If, with IFSEC, we can continue to offer the face-to-face experience of an exhibition and also provide the additional content of the Academy and other features then we can continue to bring a much-needed business service to the security market for many years to come. As the community continues to congregate online throughout the year, this is simply complementary to the live event and would never replace it in our view.

THE PIR TODAY

SENSING SENSIBILITY The PIR (passive infra-red) unit is the most common form of motion detection in the security industry, particularly for home intruder alarm systems. While other technologies such as CCTV can be used to provide motion detection functionality in certain applications, the PIR still reigns supreme as the best sensor for general intruder purposes. ne of the attractions of PIRs is their costeffectiveness as early detection tools for intruder alarm and event-driven CCTV systems. Using infra-red body heat emissions to detect movement and raise an alarm, the IR detection technology and the radio-technology, used for wireless network communication within PIRs, both have low power consumptions. This means a wireless, PIR detector’s battery life can be well over two years. No wiring is required when installing the PIRs, thus reducing installation time. Even wired units aren’t exactly the most expensive part of the intruder system, however this does not mean that developments have not been made in the introduction of new PIRs. According to Julie Kenny of Pyronix: “The most significant change with PIRs in recent years has been the transformation from analogue to digital. This has significantly changed the reliability of the detectors due to the intelligence that comes from the digital signal processing within the detector electronics,” she says. “The intelligence that is within the modern digital detectors, along with the addition of white light filters and sealed optics makes them very stable to work in many of today’s hostile environments.” Indeed, the humble PIR has come a long way from the more basic models offered in the past, and is still the cornerstone detection method of most security alarm systems. PIRs are straightforward to use, provide a clearly understood level of intruder detection and offer a price/performance ratio that few other detection technologies can match. “Probably the most significant performance enhancement in PIRs has been the inclusion of microcontrollers to process and analyse PIR detection signals,” says Clym Brown of Texecom. “As the component cost of microcontrollers has continued to fall, mass-market applications such as PIRs have benefited from the advantages of digital signal processing.” Now even some entry-level PIR detectors offer

O

www.psimagazine.co.uk

the following ‘digital’ benefits: Improved Catch Performance - Digital signal processing can intelligently analyse PIR sensor signals to determine genuine intrusion situations. In particular, this can significantly improve pickup of slow moving or distant intruders. Enhanced False Alarm Immunity Digital PIR detectors can actively reject electrical noise and other potential false alarm sources without compromising catch performance. Digital Temperature Compensation PIRs operate by detecting the difference between the background temperature and any moving targets. Digital temperature compensation adjusts the PIR detection sensitivity to ensure the optimum detection performance even in hot or cold ambient temperature environments. Active White Light Rejection - Some digital PIRs can measure the light levels in a room and actively reject any sources of white light that otherwise could have caused a false alarm condition (e.g. car headlights, direct sunlight, etc.). Anti-Jarring - Certain digital PIRs can discriminate and reject electrical signals caused by sudden shocks to the detector (or the surface the detector is mounted on). Automatic Sensitivity Adjustment- Digital PIR detectors filter out background disturbances by automatically adjusting the alarm sensitivity according to the installation environment. In addition to the technical advantages associated with the switch to digital, the harmonisation and adoption of pan-European standards for intruder detectors offers installers and end-users a guarantee of detection performance. EN50131-2-2 for PIRs and EN501312-4 for dual technology detectors have clearly defined detection performance requirements that can be certified by third party test houses and accreditors. “Installers and specifiers are also becoming increasingly savvy to the appropriate use of different PIR configurations, particularly in commercial grade applications,” says Clym. “Often twin-dual element PIRs are used in environments whereby detector stability is the overriding concern, whereas digital quad PIRs often offer superior catch performance without compromising false alarm immunity. Grade 3 models also include anti-masking capabilities, which allow PIRs to be used in higher risk applications.” The proliferation of wireless security systems

“As the component cost of microcontrollers has continued to fall, massmarket applications such as PIRs have benefited from the advantages of digital signal processing”

THE PIR TODAY

(continued from previous page)

has created a whole new range of PIR detectors that include wireless signalling capabilities. In the past, some wireless PIR models compromised detection performance in order to conserve power for battery powered wireless communications. Nowadays, advancements in wireless signalling technologies, combined with the availability of low current consumption electronic components, have enabled quality manufacturers to offer wireless PIRs with the same performance characteristics as their hard-wired counterparts. Of course some manufacturers have taken PIRs on yet another step and introduced PIR-driven video monitoring devices, with and without lighting. These can then use motion detection to activate a camera function and also, in some cases, alert the owner, monitoring station or other designated person as to the alarm and provide instant video verification of the nature of the incident and the authenticity of the alarm.

False alarms Unfortunately some PIRs can be inaccurate and incorrectly detect harmless objects, leading to false alarms. Classic false triggers include animals, lighting changes, sunlight reflections, foliage, litter, insects and birds as Graham Creek of Luminite explains: “Any movement within the field of view will potentially cause an alarm,” says Graham. “Foliage swaying in the breeze and loose flapping materials such as plastic sheeting should be removed. Overhanging trees and foliage should be cut back and the ground cleared of tall weeds and plants. If these are detected moving on a sunny day they will have the potential to cause a false alarm. Good housekeeping and careful positioning of the detector is essential to minimise the risk. Reflective surfaces will enable a PIR detector to see movement adjacent to the field of view. In addition these surfaces will reflect sunlight into the face of the detector and cause false alarms especially when there is cloud movement. Examples of reflective surfaces are: Windows, glass walls, ponds, puddles and vehicles.” To guard against false alarms try to ensure that the detector cannot see movement beyond the

“The current environment that modern PIRs need to operate in has become increasingly hostile, especially with respect to interference from other technologies” 22

desired detection range. Remember that the detection range is where the PIR will reliably detect to but of course it will look further and can detect beyond this distance. “Most PIRs have a choice of lens detection patterns,” explains Graham. “Installers can select short range or long range detection zones. Similarly, vertical and horizontal “curtains” can be activated if an intruder crosses a specific line. Selecting the correct PIR lens pattern for each application is vital. Using settings for object size and careful positioning of the PIRs can also help to rule out some false activations caused by overspill and animals.” When selecting a suitable location and positioning for a PIR sensor, it is always favourable to avoid any heat sources or other environmental disturbances that could mimic a genuine PIR signal such as direct sunlight on the PIR detector, heat sources within the PIR detector field of view, strong draughts onto the PIR detector or mounting on unstable surfaces or an surfaces likely to oscillate or vibrate. Similar to the majority of technologies, newer products will generally be more reliable, more robust and be of a higher quality, with PIRs being no different; therefore updating PIRs should be beneficial to dealing with the problems mentioned that cause false activation. “The current environment that modern PIRs need to operate in has become increasingly hostile, especially with respect to interference from other technologies,” agrees Julie. “This is probably most acute with the numerous forms of potential wireless interference (RF) and/or more types of convectional heating/ air conditioning that produce strong air turbulence. Therefore changing/renewing detectors within existing installations to digital PIRs would be advantageous as they can deal with these hostile environmental influences a lot better than analogue PIRs.” As with many security installations the positioning of the component parts can play a huge part in the effectiveness of the total system and with intruder alarms and PIRs this is no different. The advances in PIR units have gone a long way to improving the performance of the system however to achieve the best results (accuracy and fewer false alarms) then where the PIRs are fitted will ultimately be vital in the process. Due to the continued improvement in quality and calibre of PIRs, the humble unit should continue to be prevalent in security systems for the years to come.

APPS & SECURITY

WELL-CONNECTED SECURITY According to latest figures, the number of smartphones shipped globally will top 1bn this year. With their portability and web access capabilities it’s no surprise that the security market is utilising the technology for a range of applications he number of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs shipped globally reached more than 300 million units for the first quarter of 2013, according to figures from research firm Canalys, with Apple’s iPad and iPhone representing a smaller share of this due to competition from Android devices. And while Apple is certainly losing ground to Samsung in the total unit sales figures, the market is still growing both in terms of sales and the number of players in the sector. For example, Samsung and Apple alongside the other main smartphone manufacturers including HTC and Nokia will shortly be joined by Lenovo who has seen a stalling in PC sales and is looking for new markets. In the tablet PC market, Apple accounts for 46.4 percent of sales in a market that has more than doubled, according to Canalys. Shipments of these grew by 106.1 percent year-on-year to 41.9 million units during Q1 2013. Smartphone sales also grew by 47.9 percent to 216.3 million units this quarter, although Android dominates here and accounts for 75.6 percent. Samsung alone accounts for a 32 percent share of all smartphones, according to the Canalys figures. Meanwhile laptop sales were down by 13.1% in the same period. The portability, functionality and userfriendliness of tablets and smartphones have very much resulted in a crossing of the divide from solely being consumer devices for private use and into the business workplace. Therefore it was only a matter of time before the security equipment developers and manufacturers started to embrace the trend and launch systems that also took into consideration the capabilities of the next generation of mobile systems. With the increase in the widespread availability of free wi-fi services in public areas and the advances in data service delivery, the ability to use the portable device for online applications is now established. As an installer it’s likely that you will already have taken on board the benefits of smartphones, perhaps using the QR codes in PSI magazine or accessed vendor product catalogues remotely online. Smartphone and tablet web engines allow

you to check the distribution and availability of products and to order them on the move. But for the security installer today there is so much more that a smartphone or tablet can do to enhance the working day and practices for yourselves and your customers. Smartphones allow the user far more functionality than simply making a phone call, going online or sending a text. By using apps (application software) the user can instantly check specific areas of interest such as news or perform tasks by opening up dedicated programs for remote alarm monitoring, maintenance and much more. Depending on the smartphone or tablet you have, and therefore the operating system you are using, there are a number of sources for apps including iTunes, Google Play and Amazon. If you’ve not yet explored this avenue or still think that the whole idea is a big fuss to be made about a mobile telephone, consider that it was announced in mid-May this year that Apple had seen its 50 billionth app downloaded. The new Fiksu report on Apple’s App Store reported that in April 2013 alone it racked up 5.61 million app downloads of the top-200 free downloads compared to 6.1 million in January. More than 732,000 apps are currently available in the Google Play store, according to statistics from AppBrain, while Apple says it has more than 850,000 for download. That represents a lot of business to be missing out on and given that in January 2011 Apple reported its 10 billionth app download and yet only two years later is reporting its 50 billionth, the growth of the market is astronomical.

More than 732,000 apps are currently available in the Google Play store, while Apple says it has more than 850,000 25

APPS & SECURITY

(continued from previous page)

So with all this in mind it is only expected that our acceptance of apps for music, lifestyle, networking, sports etc would lead to the development of functions for security based processes far beyond those of the ones that simply lead to an online catalogue. Anyone who attended IFSEC this year will know that many manufacturers now have their own app. Initially many of these were simply links, or bookmarks, to an online database, to enable equipment selection and purchasing. However today the apps are more specialised and allow remote access to CCTV footage, alarm monitoring or installation information, product registration and other functions. It is the user interface of the next-gen systems that makes using them ideal for remote monitoring, much more practical than with previous technologies such as the PC. Of course looking at a premise’s CCTV footage from the desktop is fine if that is the only place you will ever need to access it from, but with the tablet or smartphone and utilising Cloud technology you can be anywhere in the world and view the images. Furthermore using the functionality of the operating system and the graphical user interfaces (GUI) that have been developed by vendors, you can not only review the footage but you can make constructive changes to the set-up and communicate with the equipment. Some of the latest systems provide the ability to allow a manager to guide an on-scene team by using a mobile device or alert specific individuals in the event of a verified alarm. The new devices allow people to view all of the available data before making any decisions. It is also possible to pre-empt scenarios rather than just react to them. Other systems allow the user to check CCTV footage or alarm status and also interact with the building management system and turn on/off lights and heating etc. Many of the security sector apps are free to download and are supplied from the manufacturer along with the specific piece of kit it relates to, or are available via the app store relevant to your device. It is certainly worth a little investigation as there is a real end-user desire for portable monitoring services via smart technology. For those customers with multi-site, multilocation customers who have either many satellite offices or outlets, such as a retailer, where they would want some kind of central monitoring of cameras from each location the benefits of remote access using a smartphone or tablet is ideal. And what’s more even if you are not wholly familiar

Tablet computers and smartphones give us connectivity wherever we are and this ability to access information from any point has opened up new avenues for the security sector 26

with the capabilities of apps, your clients most certainly will be. Couple this with the ease of setting up a plug and play IP camera such as those offered by many vendors and you can offer the most basic remote monitoring solution for very little outlay and effort. It all depends on the requirements of each installation, but with IP becoming simpler to fit and more mobile devices being used everyday, there are opportunities for those that embrace the technology. Tablet computers and smartphones give us connectivity wherever we are and this ability to access information from any point has opened up new avenues for the security sector. Whether you offer CCTV, intruder, fire, building management, access control or any other safety and security provision there will be an app that you can recommend to your customers. And you can present these as bonuses to any installation. The utilisation of the mobile surveillance app for example has a two-fold effect; as an installer you could sell a service on a monthly basis so that you offset the initial outlay for the customer and spread it over the period of a contract. And secondly, you are now able to add to the menu of services that you can offer in addition to the fitting of the system – these could include email alerts, or regular report logging etc. What this does is improve the relationship that the installer has with the customer and means that there is frequent contact between the two parties. By being able to offer such added-value services might also help clinch a contract in the first place. So why not visit an app store or speak to your preferred manufacturer/vendor about the availability of apps to go with the systems you are specifying? It could give you an edge on your competition.

RAISING THE STANDARD Lance Ruetimann – Euralarm Euralarm’s recently published agenda 2013-2015 “A Vision for a Competitive European Security Industry and Secure Society” outlines the problem and the need for a legally binding pan-European certification scheme for electronic fire and security products and services. Beyond the creation and adoption of the standards themselves, the difficulties perpetuating the internal market fragmentation are threefold:uneven memberstate level conformity assessment and certification; absence of mutual recognition of certification by EU member states; failure of member state authorities to enforce the replacement of national or de facto local standards with duly adopted European Standards (ENs). The costs for this situation are in the double-digit millions of Euros and must inevitably be built into the prices of the products, systems and services sold. With the exception of services the certification of products and systems today are all based on the same European documents. The consequences of the fragmentation are ambiguous costs for the European consumer as well as a reduced competitiveness in the global market. Euralarm hence endorses the Commission’s view of the need for a legislative instrument introducing an EUwide conformity assessment scheme for alarm systems, and believes it should go further. An eventual EU instrument should reinforce the obligation of member states to implement ENs in the fire and security sector as national standards without any modification and to withdraw any unjustified national standards and/or technical regulations. It should likewise obligate Member States to ensure the rigorous application by their national standardization bodies of the CEN and CENELEC agreed procedures for cases where the scope of an EN does not fully cover the scope of existing national standards. Without such discipline the benefits of EN standards will not be fully realised. The question of realisation cannot be “if”, but rather “when” and “how”. The negative impact imposed today on the fire and security sector and is clearer for policy makers and the market. To not act on this knowledge would ultimately lead to a further drop in the European share of the global market!

Julie Kenny – Pyronix Currently across Europe, despite the development of EN standards for alarm and security component products and systems, there is considerable market fragmentation. Member states do not

www.psimagazine.co.uk Main pics: Dreamstime

adopt standards uniformly, employing different certification requirements and different levels of assessment. In addition, as well as retaining countrywide variations there is a general failure to enforce the current EN standards in many countries across Europe. A legally binding pan-European certification scheme, if implemented rigorously and robustly, would certainly make significant strides to alleviate these issues. The benefits this would bring should be significant, especially with European manufacturers and SME’s like ourselves. The complexities and extensive costs required for compliance in EU member state countries restricts product development, innovation and production capacity and serve to reduce the competitiveness of our own companies. This is most acute within the SME community which remain restricted to concentrating on very few, specific markets, increasing product development costs. Adoption of a legally binding certification scheme would increase our competitiveness and serve as a catalyst for growth and access to wider market for many EU based, SME companies. However, this notion has been debated for many years, but progress within the EU framework is tortuously slow, so, whilst it is desirable, I would be very sceptical if we see this enforced in my working life!

Do we need a legally binding pan-European certification scheme for electronic fire and security products and services instead of the nationalised situation we have at the moment? Furthermore, will this ever come to fruition?

Daniel Wan – Honeywell Yes, we agree with Euralarm that, at least for electronic security products, a legally binding pan-European certification scheme is long overdue. In fact, we are encouraged by the efforts so far, specifically CertAlarm. This scheme, if fully realised, will be more simple and cost effective to implement compared to the current set up that often demands testing to be repeated, and the purchase of multiple certificates. A single pan-European certification scheme would also reduce our time-to-market on our new and innovative products. We appreciate there are many hurdles to overcome but with the backing of the industry, the European Commission and of course, the customers, we believe this will become a reality.

Dave Hewitt – CSL DualCom The UK has taken a structured approach to the migration away from BS4737 to the EN50131 suite of standards, whilst at the same time incorporating various DDs and PDs to allow for UK

specific requirements. The revised EN standards have benefitted from this development and adopted many of the UK features. This proactive approach allows the pan-European standards to evolve to the betterment of all stakeholders across the EU region. Where EU countries have simply taken the raw standards and tried to adapt to them, little development has been made and in some cases the ENs are merely paid lip service. Strong unilateral certification schemes cause resistance to ENs, deterring free trade into these countries. More significantly incountry services begin to cease to meet the requirements of neighbouring countries. For manufacturers, this increases the demand for expensive certification on a country-by-country basis which hinders competition and seriously impairs development in certain regions. Certification bodies are commercial businesses. Some believe there’s a resistance from them for pan-European certification as it’s clearly more for profitable to gather income by specific country. Others feel that this puts the enhancement of standards behind commercial gains. In conjunction with the BSIA and observing the considered views of other security manufacturing companies selling across Europe, CSL DualCom shares the opinion that there should be no such barriers to trade across EU countries. Since we launched our services into Ireland and more recently Scandinavia, we have had to perform the balancing act that conflicts with the demand for standards. We must compete with other service providers based on features and benefits with a suite of EN standards as well as having to comply with local costly certification before we can begin to enter new markets.

Ray Puttock – EMS Group A pan European scheme would be a big benefit to all manufacturers as multiple schemes cost money and take time. This would remove the regional variations where countries accept only one scheme effectively barring entry into that market unless you invest accordingly. These regional variations can stifle both commercial and technological advancement especially in current austere times. The big win however would be the more global market as a consolidated approach from Europe would also strengthen our worldwide aspirations which is what the European community is all about.

Chris Carter Brennan – WebWayOne Fire alarm systems are already covered so this is all about Intruder. The strategy comes direct from the European Community, which is not

initiated but supported by Euralarm after a lengthy but detailed research study by ECORYS. This has now moved on to a public consultation phase and the choices vary from no change to rigid adherence of the EN standards, including surveillance of product design and manufacture. If the process is agreed and implemented we would hope to see resolution and implementation of the following points. 1. We must ensure that the standards provide clear and concise requirements, meeting the needs of all stakeholders 2. We must implement a fast process to ensure standards are updated quickly and efficiently to meet the needs of the Industry. 3. We require a fast CENELEC process on interpretation. Neither Test houses nor Inspectorates wish to spend time interpreting standards, and we do not want this either. 4. We need to accept there is a place for National requirements, which could be permitted under certain conditions. a) If they are included within an official annex of the associated standard. b) Annexed requirements are self-tested and certificated by the manufacturer. 5. We must ensure that test houses are prohibited from creating bespoke standards. 6. All test houses should participate with CENELEC to create well-documented test procedures and implement them with no deviations. 7. Certification listings should have clarity and certainty for all stakeholders 8. A pragmatic stance to product changes by test houses is essential Will it happen? – Probably

Brian Song – IDIS Europe We welcome an EU standard that could potentially act as a differentiator and guide for both installers and endusers. With the flooding of the market in recent years of low quality and low price security kits, an EU standard may well act as an indicator for quality and reliability delivering longer-term benefits, return on investment and lower lifecycle costs for customers. We design, manufacture and comply with standards including CE, WEEE, RoHS, REACH and Six Sigma among others. These existing standards are often of a broader scope, such as the supply of safe electronic products to the EU that also address eco-design and environmental impact. Therefore, we welcome EU-standardisation yet believe it prudent to avoid overlap and any duplication of existing compliance while embracing the possibility of expanding the blueprint to a global allencompassing standard for safe, environmentally friendly, high quality and reliable security products and solutions.

SMOKE DETECTION

The current economic climate could make the introduction of a new EU-standard potentially ill-timed for businesses to find the resources in order to embark upon a new certification program even if in the longer term the compliance burden reduces. An EU directive would likely encompass the home EU country from which a business operates as well cross border countries. The report points out that many security companies use their home revenues to drive growth overseas and while this is the case for some, others rely solely on domestic markets. This is particularly the case for installers generating 100% of revenue from a national, regional and even local level with no burning desire to expand geographically. However, the standard also calls for EU-wide certification to cover services as well as products. While installers may be able to absorb the overhead of existing national certification and also remain up-to-date on current standards to which products must comply, now may not be the right time to demand familiarisation, training, new processes and all the other activities and costs associated with a new standard of compliance. There is already a huge pressure on installation margins and a further compliance burden could increase the squeeze. The blueprint needs to consider more widely how these new standards would likely affect all stakeholders operating in national as well as international markets. In the UK in particular, EU control and standardisation is currently not a popular concept compounded by a national press regularly reporting the increased EU compliance burden facing small business along with voter’s calls for an urgent EU referendum. In terms of principle and thinking, we welcome Euralarm’s push for increased safety and security through such EUstandards and believe this can only result in a positive improvement for the quality and reliability of security products that benefit the industry as a whole as well as manufacturers. Yet the time to introduce a new set of standards and practices is potentially in the short to medium term less certain.

Geoff Tate – SSAIB I would argue that the need for a common European certification scheme is self-evident. If a product or service is certificated in one country then that certification should be recognised throughout Europe. But whether such certification should be legally binding is another matter. Currently, the certification of the supplier of a security product or service is a voluntary matter, i.e. there are no legislative requirements. I am not convinced of the need for legislation in this area. It would almost certainly drive up costs and I am not persuaded that legislation would result in sufficient benefits to offset those resulting costs. As to whether pan-European schemes for certification for electronic fire and security products and services will ever be realised, I tend to the view that substantive

www.psimagazine.co.uk

progress is being made – albeit slowly. We now have a wide range of European Standards for both fire and security equipment and services. As such, a foundation exists for the certification of equipment and services. However, whilst mutual recognition agreements do already exist between some European product certification bodies, there remains notable reluctance among some bodies to accept the certification granted by another body in a different country. This appears to be due to concerns related to the equivalence of inspection and tests conducted by these bodies. There may also, of course, be commercial considerations influencing this whole situation.

Thomas Brookes – Fire and Security Association Euralarm’s dream of having a legally binding European certification scheme is interesting, but unlikely to be realised given the current recession and prevailing Euroskepticism. This aside, the UK’s reluctance to enforce the installation of fire systems to British Standards, let alone European ones, is a major barrier. We understand from Sir Ken Knight, former Government Chief Fire and Rescue Advisor, that while Government whole-heartedly endorses third-party accreditation for the fire protection industry, the fact remains that current policy is to cut red tape. Therefore, it’s unlikely that we’ll see any change in regulation before the next election. This has become more apparent from our experience of technical committee meetings that were held to rewrite BS 5839-1. The FSA was involved in these and suggested the standard should include an annex recognising the competency of fire alarm engineers. However, we appear to be a lone voice. This seems particularly unusual given that the review of BS 5839-1 was brought about as a result of the Rosepark fire enquiry, which suggested that a poorly installed fire system without a zone plan contributed to the loss of life. The closest the review of BS 5839-1 came to recognising competency in the standard was an amendment to the definition of a competent person to include the term “relevant current training and experience”. However, we note that this change has not been well-publicised. Therefore, given the authorities seem to have difficulty including a set standard for competency in the UK, a successful pan-European attempt to do this seems a long way off indeed.

“Euralarm’s dream of having a legally binding European certification scheme is interesting, but unlikely to be realised”

Kim Loy – Xtralis Remote Monitoring A legally binding pan-European certification scheme is definitely the right approach, provided that the given standards reflects true customer needs, takes country specific requirements – generally established over years - into consideration and is not specified according to proprietary manufacturer standards. This requires well selected working group team members who are independent, skilled, free from constraints and specific co-operate standards. A difficult approach but it might happen over time!

aving previously reported that the Siemens CCAW1417-LPOIR analogue Day/Night Camera had too many features to cover in our time with the product, a revisit was called for to look at some of the features we couldn’t fit into the first write-up. As stated last time, this camera has been designed for outdoor use under variable lighting conditions. The unit offers high resolution (560TVL Colour/600TVL B/W) from a ¼ inch Sony 760H Exview HAD CCD of 795 x 596 pixels. With optical/digital zoom, inbuilt IR and white light LEDs for low light applications the unit is clearly aimed at the professional installer market. On initial power up, camera functions such as backlight compensation, wide dynamic range, motion/face detection, digital zoom and night lighting are disabled, so it is necessary to enter the on screen menu to configure the unit for anything other than basic operation. Menu access is provided for, either with the supplied remote unit (requiring a two wire connection) to the camera, or via an RS232/RS485 connection. We checked the RS485 connectivity using one of the supported 3rd party protocols and were indeed able to access the configuration menu, zoom in/out, and switch to pre-sets etc. from a joystick controller. Backlight Compensation and Wide Dynamic Range are configured within the same section of the menu and enabling one, disables the other. BLC has an auto and manual setting (with low, medium

Whilst the IR is reasonably effective, the white light array consisting of six LEDs can only really be used for its deterrent value in terms of notifying a potential target that they have been detected. As stated in our previous evaluation, no information is provided with the product as to effective range of the lighting. There is a dedicated menu section for alarm/motion/facial detection. Motion and facial detection cannot be used together but either may be used to trigger an output which will go high (3.3V) in the active state. There are ten configurable motion detection areas available whilst the sensitivity setting is global. Facial detection appeared to be quite effective but care needs to be taken when setting this up as we experienced significant random activations at high sensitivity levels. We also note that the sensitivity adjustment for motion and facial detection are of different ranges and work in opposite directions which could cause an element of confusion whilst configuring these functions. One of the ten available zoom pre-sets may be allocated for a motion or facial detection event and a further one as a home position. It should be noted that manual zooming or pre-set switching via a joystick controller is disabled whilst there is an alarm event in progress and should be considered when selecting an activation period (dwell time) for the alarm.

Having now spent longer with the product, we’ve become comfortable with its configuration and performance and it’s true to say the Siemens CCAW1417-LPOIR has a significant array of features and options available on it. Our overall assessment remains that this is a product with good quality build and performance, marred by a lack of clarity within some areas of its operating instructions.

THE COST OF FIRE T

Why specifying a quality fire detection system pays dividends for all parties in the security contract

36

he Housing Health Cost Calculator from the Building Research Establishment (BRE) is an online tool to enable social housing providers in England to readily measure the cost to the NHS and society at large of poor housing conditions. It also identifies the overall saving made from work undertaken to reduce and mitigate hazards defined under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS). The Calculator covers the most common hazards to be found in housing, with fire coming close to the top of the scale. The cost of any work carried out is calculated by considering the standard cost of materials and of employing a contractor to carry out the work required. At the time of writing, nearly 50 local authorities have registered to use the Housing Health Cost Calculator. In the area of fire, savings have reached over £100,000 across England. Nearly all social housing providers in the UK now have some form of fire detection in their property, but the nature and quality of those systems can vary dramatically, from stand alone battery powered alarms that fall way short of BS 5839-6:2004 (the standard for domestic smoke alarm installations) through to mains powered interlinked systems featuring sophisticated alarm sensing. Whilst domestic smoke alarms sold in the UK should be tested and approved (e.g. kitemarked) to BS EN 14604 and heat alarms to BS 5446-2, the difference in quality between manufacturer’s alarms can be considerable, as installers no doubt know. Furthermore, many manufacturers only

batch test smoke alarms, while others test every smoke alarm that leaves their premises. Of course, quality comes at a premium, which can be difficult to sell into a customer. But with fire detection equipment you really do get what you pay for and spending less can mean a noticeable effect on alarm performance. According to Neil Perdell, National Technical Manager at Aico most installers and social housing providers fully comprehend this. “The main reason cited for opting for lower cost alternatives is, unsurprisingly, budget restrictions,” says Neil. “But we believe this is a false economy. It’s our argument – and one we hope installers will stand behind - that installing quality fire detection equipment is a financially sound long term strategy for their customers and, ultimately, for themselves. The initial capital outlay may be more, but what is saved over the years is considerable. A quality alarm system is exceptionably reliable and considerably less prone to false alarms; fewer false alarms means fewer call outs and fewer replacement alarms.” A well designed alarm system also comes with many features that help save money in other ways, with the most notable being a reduction in installation costs. Ease of alarm installation is the most obvious of these. Some systems require separate bases and connectors, which can increase installation time. The other key area of savings on the installation front is the ability to interconnect alarms wirelessly. Interconnection is a requirement of BS 5839-6 and Building Regulations, but using Radio Frequency (RF) alarm interconnection instead of cabling can save time, mess and disruption and reduce costs. “When an alarm system is installed using traditional hard-wired interconnection, the disruption and cosmetic damage to property is significant or unsightly trunking may be required,” says Neil. Fitting a wireless interconnect system does away with all of this. Installation is much faster, cabling and trunking costs are reduced and all the associated redecorating costs are eliminated.” Advanced RF systems give the option of adding extra control to the system, such as Test, Silence and Locate switches. These are also linked to the system by RF and are powered by Lithium batteries – no wiring required. These devices allow the resident to test and silence all the alarms on the system from the one conveniently placed switch as well as allowing for quick identification of the unit that has caused the alarm. This added facility may look like an extra cost in terms of equipment purchase but it can save money by reducing the number of call outs to the property - saving both installers and customers time and money.

FIRE DETECTION

They can also interface with specialist alarm systems for the hard of hearing and – in some cases – with Carbon Monoxide alarms for a complete home safety system. Because these devices are wirelessly interconnected, they’re not only easier and quicker to install, but also easier and less expensive to remove. That gives the customer the ability, for example, to remove an alarm for the hard of hearing from a system where the tenant may not require it and simply move it to a property with an RF system where a tenant would benefit from it. The better fire alarm systems on the market can be used with a relay, manual call point, switched module and other accessories to provide application solutions. With this feature, the system can be used, for example, to sound if a sprinkler system is activated, signal to a warden call system or to activate other external devices like emergency lighting or sounders. “The Housing Health Cost Calculator gives registered local authorities a total of the potential savings to society that their work has resulted in, helping to justify their costs,” concludes Neil Perdell. “The savings to society by undertaking work to reduce and mitigate fire hazards by those

local authorities that have entered their data already comes to over £100,000. Investing in fire detection systems clearly offers a payback investing in quality fire detection systems offers so much more, especially when viewed as part of a long term strategy.”

Vivotek – IP8133W The IP8133W is a network camera designed for home security applications. The camera has a 1MP sensor enabling viewing resolution of 1280x800 at 30 fps, and the camera supports H.264 compression technology, reducing file sizes and conserving valuable network bandwidth. With MPEG-4 and MJPEG compatibility also included, video streams can also be transmitted in any of these formats for versatile applications. The streams can also be individually configured to meet different constraints, thereby further reducing bandwidth and storage requirements. Users can thus receive multiple streams simultaneously in different resolutions, frame rates, and image qualities for viewing on different platforms. The camera also includes tamper detection and VIVOTEK’s 32channel recording software. www.vivotek.com

Sony – SNC-CX600W Sony has introduced the SNCCX600W designed for small businesses, retailers, restaurants, hotels and private residences. The camera comes with HD (720p) and wide angle view (120°) to produce pictures for detecting crime and disturbances as they happen. The camera also features a passive infrared (PIR) sensor for detecting movement in the dark and a white LED light for illuminating the scene automatically when motion is detected or when activated by the user. As a result, says the company, the need for additional equipment is greatly reduced. The SNC-CX600W camera is reportedly designed with a quick and easy installation in mind. The user friendly solution keeps cable management to a minimum as video can be streamed wirelessly and saved to the micro SD memory card on board the camera. This new camera also fits in with its surroundings with a compact finish, meaning that the camera can be positioned within confined areas without compromising the level of surveillance capability. In addition, the SNC-CX600W supports two-way audio using a built-in microphone and speaker. www.pro.sony.eu/videosecurity

D-Link – DCS-2210 The DCS-2210 is a surveillance solution for monitoring low-light environments in the home or small office. It combines a 2 Megapixel sensor with a built-in IR LED to help users keep watch over areas in darkness. The DCS-2210 also includes a built-in IR cut filter, making it suitable for both day and night applications. Simple installation and a web-based interface offer integration with an Ethernet network. The DCS2210 also comes with remote monitoring and motion detection features for a complete home security solution. This network camera supports the Universal Plug-n-Play feature, which allows computers running on Windows XP/Vista/7 to automatically recognise the camera and add it to the network. Users sign up with one of the free services available on the web to assign a name and domain to the camera (e.g. mycamera.dlinkddns.com), and remotely access the camera without having to remember an IP address. Users may also view up to 32 cameras from a central location using the included D-ViewCam software. www.dlink.com

Grundig – GCI-H0812W The GCI-H0812W flat dome is the latest addition to Grundig’s IP camera range offering installers an IP camera solution in a discrete, low-profile indoor housing measuring 117mm in diameter and 50mm tall. The flat dome has power over Ethernet (PoE IEEE 802.3af ), so no separate power supply is required, keeping installation simple. The GCI-H0812W uses a 2 MP CMOS sensor and progressive scan technology to produce quad video streams in H.264 and MJPEG compression modes. Installers can select 720p resolution at 25 frames per second (FPS) or 1080p at 13 FPS. Andreas Franusic, product manager at Grundig, explains, “Quad video stream technology enables efficient video transmission and storage, whilst saving network bandwidth. The 2MP stream is ideal for NVR recording and the lower resolution D1 or CIF video streams are optimised for monitor displays, PCs, tablets and smartphone viewing.” www.grundig-security.com

CHILDCARE CENTRE OPTS FOR IP SECURITY Gingerbread Corner, located in Croydon, provides year-round childcare for more than 160 children between the ages of 3 months and 11 years. An existing outdated analogue CCTV system needed to be replaced. Apart from the fact that there were just four cameras which only allowed the monitoring of entrances and exits, the quality of the images captured and recorded were not of sufficient quality to be of any practical use if and when an incident needed to be investigated. “There are so many potential situations where access to high quality video evidence can help protect the children in our care and also verify that our staff has at all times professionally carried out their duties,” said Ben Dzendzera, Gingerbread Corner’s Operations Manager. “For example, with so many children living in single parent environments, we can avoid any disputes by being able to monitor, and if necessary verify, who has collected a child from our premises. Equally important, we can quickly resolve any issues which might arise through accusations of one child bullying another and we have a duty of care towards our staff to ensure they can be protected against any false accusations.” Ben invited a number of different companies to recommend a solution that would meet

Access control for large retail site French retail chain Hyper U is using an access control solution from ACT at one of its largest stores, a 20,000-square-metre property with 200 full-time personnel at the western town of Savenay in the Loire Estuary. Integrator 2ACOM installed the equipment in two phases. Hyper U wanted to control and log movement of staff around the shop floor, office block, delivery areas, car parks, lifts, stock rooms and perimeter. The client also needed a hierarchical rights management system so that staff would only access certain groups of doors associated with their job function and at appropriate times of

Gingerbread Corner’s current and future needs. “It was clear that we immediately needed approximately 20 cameras in order to be able to monitor all activity throughout the site, but we also wanted to ensure that the system we invested in could continue to be expanded if and when our requirements changed.” Some of the quotations received provided for the new system to be analogue based, but Ben and his colleagues decided to take the advice offered by Frankie Bellavia, a Director of Postfield Systems, who recommended that Gingerbread Corner should choose an IP network based system. A total of 21 Samsung cameras have been installed, 16 of which are SND-3082 Day/Night network domes. These utilise Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology making them ideal for locations where there may be strong contrasting lighting conditions. The SND-3082 features Power over Ethernet (PoE) which means that both power and video/audio transmissions can be provided via a single Ethernet cable connected to Gingerbread Corner’s network. This has resulted in costs being kept to a minimum as there wasn’t a need for coaxial cable to be run to each of the 21 cameras. The five other cameras are Samsung SNO-1080Rs. The images from all of the cameras are recorded on one of two SRN-1670D network video recorders. “As a non-profit organisation it is difficult to show a return on investment, but there is no doubt that the video surveillance system has given us peace of mind in knowing that if any serious incident takes place we can verify exactly what has happened by being able to retrieve the recorded video,” says Ben. www.samsungsecurity.com day according to their shift. ACT’s door stations, door controllers, readers and ACTWin software formed the chosen system. The software’s graphical interface is simplifying database management for Hyper U and has allowed supervisors to create 71 user groups, so promoting complete visibility of staff movement and enhancing health and safety at a store with long opening hours where there is activity 24 hours a day. The door security also ensures that prospective thieves remain on the shop-floor and are denied entry to areas where high-value items are stored. Areas that are commercially sensitive (e.g. cashier’s office, luxury electrical goods) as well as loading bays where the presence of vehicles puts a premium on safety have a twin level of security with both keypads and proximity readers being used. The ACT units cover 60 doors and the equipment is working in conjunction with intruder alarms, CCTV and perimeter intrusion protection. www.accesscontrol.ie

Connections Hello again, As all professional security installers will be well aware, an alarm is only as good as the response it elicits. Your customers will be none too impressed if when an incident occurs, and the system you sold them generates an alarm, nothing much happens. Increasingly, today’s solutions call for remote monitoring by an ARC or RVRC to ensure that the appropriate action is taken when required, and false alarm or nuisance activations are cleared down to allow the solution to operate as normal. For many, selecting an ARC or RVRC is just as important as selecting equipment to create the solution. After all, it takes one error or failure to correctly action an alarm response and the entire system has effectively failed. The remote monitoring marketplace has been in something of a state of flux in recent years, and so the majority of installers will settle for nothing less than an established ARC or RVRC with a credible track record and a commitment to meet new industry standards and new technology in a positive manner.

Operation room upgrade in Birmingham Winsted has provided equipment for Network Rail’s on-going major overhaul of Birmingham New St station, designed to address problems including significant passenger overcrowding. As the busiest station outside London it was last redeveloped in 1967. Now handling over 140,000 passengers daily – double the number it was designed for – it was dark and unwelcoming, with poor access. Several operational rooms at the station were involved and the furniture provided by Winsted complies with Section 12 requirements (fire safety legislation). Sourced from Winsted’s range of consoles and related equipment, designed specifically for the rail industry, the order comprises a large L-shaped desk and straight console, along with two smaller consoles in adjacent rooms. These Section 12 consoles for rail applications consist of modular powder coated steel assemblies and are available as stock items, with Trespa work surfaces that match the console finish. Winsted was also commissioned to manufacture custom storage cabinets in laminated fire retardant MDF. Commenting on the consoles and ancillary furniture supplied and installed by Winsted, WS Atkins’ Senior Project Engineer Stuart Fenner says the equipment is helping to maximise the control room operators’ monitoring performance: “We’re very pleased with the specified units, which meet all of the client’s operational requirements,” he notes. “The furniture’s modular design also allows for future configuration changes as needs evolve.” Darryl Lymer from Winsted’s Business Development team, who oversaw the Birmingham New St supply contract, adds that the main control room contains a number of pillars, as well as a ramp for wheel chair access, that had to be worked around. Other specific requirements included storage of CPUs, for which a custom corner unit was made. www.winsted.co.uk

UPDATE

PRODUCT UPDATE GSM kit for simpler installation

Neat and discreet illuminators

Following the simplification of the Pyronix Enforcer kits, the company also announced that there is another addition to the range of kits, the Enforcer GSM Kit 1 - now, the Enforcer range has become even easier to install with the launch of the GSM kit. There is no need to wire into phone lines, the panel has GSM communication built-in. The kit will contain an Enforcer GSM panel complete with GSM module, a Deltabell-WE module, two KF4-WE four button keyfobs, two KX10DP-WE wireless pet immune detectors (which can be converted to KX12DQ-WEs by removing the pet mask in the lens) and an MC1MINI-WE mini magnetic contact. As with the PSTN kits recently launched, Pyronix has removed the coloured bases from the kits and so buyers will only receive the Deltabell wireless module with the purchase of this kit. The dummy bases and covers will need to be purchased separately. www.pyronix.com

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Old deer catches bus This CCTV footage from onboard a bus in Pennsylvania captures the moment a deer crashes through the windscreen and runs in the aisle. The animal smashes through the front windscreen before running around the vehicle trying to flee. The driver stopped the bus and opened the door allowing the deer to run free. There was only one passenger on board and no one was hurt. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCSdUhGQoe8

Snatch, bang, whallop! A Colombian thief badly botched his getaway after swiping a woman’s mobile phone in a Bogota bus station. After grabbing the phone the thief sprinted out of the doors and ran straight into an oncoming bus. He received medical attention and was treated for minor injuries. His victim, meanwhile, recovered her phone and even helped him out from under the bus. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-1x994PCqQ

Fast food drivethrough This CCTV footage shows the moment a car crashed through the window of a Taco Bell outlet in West Chester, Ohio. The clip shows the van narrowly missing a woman and young girl as glass and other debris sprays over customers. Police said the van had crossed into oncoming traffic before going over a kerb and hitting the restaurant. Luckily no one-was injured. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-2VVajuAUM

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Desperate to travel Incredible footage from Wales in May showed how desperate one passenger was to catch the train as he jumps onto the tracks and runs in front of a train in a bid to stop it as it pulls away from the platform. The incident was at Crosskeys station in Ebbw Valley. Unfortunately the driver was unimpressed and refused to open the doors to let the traveller on despite his protests. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfTmxahtJMk

Scooting for a bruising This clip from Beijing shows a rather hapless scooter rider clearly struggling with the controls of his bike. After riding into a number of cars and a lorry, he decides to jump back onto the scooter once the lorry driver gets out of his cab to have a word. Then the big hole in the foreground of the footage comes into play as he drives straight into it. Note how the other drivers rapidly walk away at this point… www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0wREXSUnzE
