eld over three days the IFSEC event is an evolving animal. In years gone by the amount of CCTV on show was overwhelming, but today thanks to the development and widespread adoption of IP, SDKs and the reality of integration the event has widened its scope along with the way in which the industry and technology has changed. For example, nobody is talking about the benefits of IP migration from analogue anymore, instead it’s a given that your customers want to upgrade their surveillance and now the question is how much of the old installation do you want to keep in order to meet their requirements and on budget? You can keep the analogue cameras or keep the cabling, or both, and still enjoy the benefits of higher spec networked CCTV by utilising a whole range of options available from a host of manufacturers. And is it just me or is the raising of camera resolutions yet again just not as exciting as it used to be? How many ‘K’ is enough? Let’s just leave it at 4K for a year or two and let everyone catch up. Despite all of this rambling there was plenty to see at IFSEC this year which led to quite a lot of rambling (in it’s other meaning) as according to my smartphone on the third day of IFSEC I walked 7.7km (or just over 4 miles in old money) catching up on the news. One of the most pleasing trends that we noticed was that the companies which were the targets of acquisition in 2014-15 are reporting no negative impacts upon their businesses. In fact it was quite refreshing to talk to the likes of Axis, Samsung, Milestone and Vanderbilt (formerly Security Products from Siemens) and see how enthusiastic the teams are now that they have new backing and support from new owners. This makes sense as nobody would think it is a good business model to buy one of the biggest names in the security industry to instantly change it into something else. Especially as its customers (that’s the likes of you) have built up a relationship with the people at those companies over the years and while you are happy to see a different logo on an invoice you don’t want to suddenly start talking to a total stranger who doesn’t know you or your company. And talking of strangers the other main trend we picked up at the event involved access control and how it looks like the technology is being simplified at the front end. We spoke to a number of companies that were launching systems that involve visitor management all aimed at making the installation and the use of access control systems as easy as possible. In fact this is a trend we saw a few years ago in the engineering sector where the features and benefits remained but the units were more straightforward. Maybe then the overall trend at IFSEC was that manufacturers have recognised the value in keeping everything simple; sticking to their core strengths and going with plans and systems that work, rather than over-complicating a process that doesn’t need to be changed, just for the sake of it. INDUSTRY NEWS Double family celebration at Securi-Guard

Kim Precious and Scott Boyd both celebrate 30 years at Securi-Guard

This year sees a double family celebration for the managing directors of Securi-Guard. Both Scott Boyd, who heads up the fire and security division, and his sister Kim Precious, in charge of the company’s monitoring services, are marking 30 years with the business in 2015. It’s a significant landmark for the pair, whose father Bill Boyd originally launched the company in 1966 before establishing the Securi-Guard brand in 1982 under the same directorship. Bill, who still takes a very active role in the business as company chairman, paid tribute to the contribution made by his son and daughter: “The growth of our business over the last few decades has not been without its challenges, but both Scott and Kim have met those challenges head on and have always shown a real commitment to delivering a service of the highest quality across everything we do.”

Security Products from Siemens acquisition is completed In brief Mayflex has formed a distribution agreement with Canon to sell its range of network cameras from early July. The International Professional Security Association (IPSA) has appointed Stuart Naisbett as its new Chairman. Oprema has been appointed as a key distributor by Tyco Security Products and will offer Visonic wireless intrusion products and Kantech access control. Furthermore Oprema will be the Regional Distribution partner for American Dynamics and Exacq CCTV solutions

Vanderbilt Industries has announced that it has now completed the acquisition of Security Products from Siemens, as first announced in October 2014. The new operation will be headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, with Joseph Grillo as its Managing Director. Joe Grillo said of the completion: “I’m delighted that we have been able to finalise this purchase on schedule. It will significantly boost our market position in Europe by offering a wider and more comprehensive range of products and solutions to our channel partners.” The Siemens product ranges – which include access control, intrusion alarm, and video surveillance products – were identified as a good fit for Vanderbilt’s current activities. Vanderbilt also recognises that the Siemens product brand names, such as Aliro, SPC and Vectis are widely recognised, have a loyal customer base, and

Midwich secures Focus SD

It was announced in June that the Focus Security Distribution team is to join Midwich Security. Focus founder Francesco Bellavia said: “Our contact with Midwich has shown very clearly that we have shared values and ambitions, and that by working as one we can best achieve our common goal of becoming a major force in the security distribution market.” Mark Thomas, Director of Midwich Security said: “By welcoming the Focus SD team to our business, we aim to build upon our success in the AV/IT sector by penetrating further the traditional security market. The convergence of security with IT/AV is gaining pace and we are now ideally placed to provide our customers with products and project support – further enhancing our value add principles to both customers and vendors. “Focus SD holds the same values towards customer support and technical expertise as Midwich Security. Therefore it became a natural fit to further develop our business by increasing our energies into the physical security market place where our IP expertise will add true value.” therefore does not plan to change them in the foreseeable future. The acquisition will not only expand the company’s presence in the security industry but will also enhance its competitive position in what it says is a fragmented market with great growth potential. With coverage in the mature markets of North America and Europe, Vanderbilt is now looking to expand further into other areas including South America and Asia Pacific. “We will bring a refreshing perspective to an industry that is changing rapidly and showing continued growth,” says Grillo.

Trinity Fire & Security joins Nedap UK Channel Partner Programme

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Graham Bettany, SECOM plc’s Head of Fire Safety. SECOM are a global organisation operating at the local level and committed to providing state-of-the-art fire & security solutions to homes, businesses and public sector organisations.

Nedap Security Management has announced that Trinity Fire & Security has joined its UK Channel Partner Programme. Nedap has introduced this new programme in order to work closely with its partners and provide a means for integrators to become accredited to sell and support Nedap solutions. Daryn Flynn, UK Country Manager at Nedap, is excited at the prolonged relationship with Trinity: “We have worked with Trinity for a number of years and have been able to deliver a number of good projects. By signing up to our new programme, we are now able to work closer than ever before. Trinity are able to deploy our newly released AEOS hardware line giving us both more opportunities. I’m excited by the prospect of growing and developing an already strong relationship and taking it to the next level” Pictured (L-R): John Ambler (Sales Manager at Trinity), Adam Vered (Nedap UK Channel Manager) and Rob Holiday (Sales Director at Trinity)

Wavestore introduces new support programme for installers Wavestore has introduced its ‘Better Together’ Partner Programme in support of installers and systems integrators choosing to recommend its Video Management Software (VMS) solutions to end-user clients. The Wavestore Partner Programme is designed to offer advantages to companies involved in the design, installation and commissioning of video surveillance solutions. Among the benefits on offer are project registration, system design and tender submission support, as well as access to training, free demonstration licences and PR services. “Wavestore’s business philosophy is based on partnerships and that is why we have adopted the ‘Better Together’ theme for our Partner Programme,” said James Smith, Marketing Director for Wavestore. “We believe we’re much stronger together with close partnerships leading to better solutions, happier end-user clients and more winning situations. Being open platform and truly independent means that through the Partnership Programme we will be able to develop ever closer business relationships with installers and systems integrators.”

There are aligned resources between security and fire, are SECOM seeing this as a growth sector? The perception is that resourcing for fire and security systems is similar as they appear to go hand in hand. However, the technology is actually quite different. Fire systems protect life whereas intruder systems protect property. We see this as a growth sector for SECOM and in the future our goal is to have a good proportion of our Regional Security Sales Executives being confident enough to sell fire systems to ensure protection of life with complex installations being passed on to our specialist consultants in the Fire Division. Considering the crucial nature of Fire systems there should be a heightened demand for remote signalling? The law does not require buildings to have a remote link and legislation allows the reliance on individuals in the building to alert the emergency services. Therefore customers tend to only consider remote monitoring when the building is empty for a long period of time. For example a car dealership would have high value vehicles overnight protected by just CCTV. In a business of high value, it would seem perfectly sensible to protect it with remote signalling at a cost of less than £1 a day. What role does BAFE play with an Installers’ inspectorate certified fire system? BAFE is the scheme, NSI is the inspectorate. NSI inspect the scheme which is designed by BAFE. The scheme for fire alarm systems is SP203 and this scheme is a set of requirements for a fire company to achieve and NSI carry out the inspection. There is no requirement in law to be third-party accredited in order to be a fire alarm company. However, we would always recommend that you choose a company that is certified, as there is a huge risk to the business and its directors if there should be any loss of life or property. In some traditional security installation companies fire may only represent 10% of the business. What can installers do to grow this? I am not so sure it would only represent 10% of the business, I would suggest that it is significantly higher. There is a legal requirement for all commercial buildings with five or more members of staff to have a full fire risk assessment. They would therefore need to deploy some sort of fire safety measures such as a fire detection system, fire prevention measures or a simple manual system such as red call points. Installers can expand their businesses by being aware of their customer requirements and their legal obligation to provide fire safety.

NEWS EXTRA

Barometer reveals concerns Results from Vanderbilt’s 2015 European Security Barometer have been revealed and give an interesting insight into security installations and the reasons behind them

“The fact that many of the British businesses we surveyed do not have electronic security products like access control, CCTV or remote monitoring is a cause for serious concern”

12

study conducted across four European countries by YouGov for Vanderbilt reveals that more than one in four (28%) of small and medium sized British businesses have suffered loss, disruption or inconvenience as a direct result of physical or cyber security breaches. Yet while cyber security arguably gets the lion’s share of media and business attention, British businesses report nearly three times as many physical breaches in security at their workplace (23%) than virtual, or cyber, attacks (8%). This is particularly true of small businesses, where 20% have suffered a physical breach, yet only 6% have experienced cyber security attacks. However, medium-sized businesses reported higher number of physical breaches in security (32%) and cyber attacks (13%). The survey forms part of Vanderbilt’s 2015 European Security Barometer, which tests the climate of the electronic security market in Europe. As part of the survey, senior decision makers at small to medium sized businesses with up to 249 employees in Great Britain, France, Germany and Spain were asked about the loss, disruption of inconvenience caused to their businesses by breaches in security. “The fact that many of the British businesses we surveyed do not have electronic security products like access control, CCTV or remote monitoring is a cause for serious concern,” noted Joe Grillo, Managing Director of Vanderbilt International. “This is especially true given the number of security breaches that businesses report – and the loss, inconvenience and disruption that these cause.” The survey found that,

A

where businesses do install electronic security equipment, it is to meet practical concerns. Equipment is installed to prevent theft, vandalism and unauthorised access, yet considerations such as duty of care to employees, regulatory compliance, lowering insurance premiums and maintaining business continuity do not seem to factor anywhere near as highly. British businesses confirm that, when it comes to specifying and purchasing electronic security products, brand loyalty is a minor concern. The survey reveals they value quality, price and features above customer service, integration and the brand. The survey reveals overwhelming support for the use of CCTV in combating crime, with nearly nine out of ten (89%) British adults supporting its role in preventing crime and providing evidence to the Police. In addition, 68% of British adults do not believe CCTV represents an infringement of civil liberties, or that it invades their privacy. Despite their fears, few British households have installed electronic security products in their homes to better protect their families and property. Indeed, only a minority of households have an intruder or burglar alarm (28%), an access control system with keypad or swipecard (5%), or CCTV (7%). British households have more intruder or burglar alarms installed than their counterparts in France, Germany, Spain or Sweden, however. The survey revealed considerable interest amongst householders for advanced security technologies. A third were interested in an integrated security system that combined CCTV, intruder alarms and access control; while 35% were interested in security products that can be linked with, and made to work alongside, other appliances in the ‘connected home’ of the future. Crucially, this interest is not restricted to those that own their own homes: 36% of those that rent their home from a private landlord are interested in an integrated security system, compared to only 28% of those who owned their home outright.

INTERVIEW

Open for discussion This month we talk to Chris Whitting, General Manager UK & Ireland at Milestone Systems. We caught up with Chris just after the opening of Milestone’s new UK HQ in the Green Park Business Park in Reading. hris Whitting has spent more than 10 years working in the professional security world. He has held senior management positions in CNL, Verint, Sony and Bosch before joining Milestone Systems as General Manager for the UK & Ireland in June 2014.

C

Chris Whitting

How have the last twelve months been for yourself and Milestone? A timely question as I am coming up to the end of my first full year at Milestone! My first day with the company was also the first day of IFSEC 2014 and as we sit here today (early June) we are planning our stand for this year’s event. It has been a very busy year full of excitement and energy and we have achieved a lot in that time, culminating in our relocation in the UK from Derby to Reading which; following all of the positive feedback we have had from visitors and partners when they come here; has proved a great move for us. With the relocation we are now positioned right in a key hub for technology vendors as well as IT and professional security distributors. Our facilities, in particular our new demo room and training centre, meet the needs of more of our partners going forward. In terms of our team here, this has grown. We are still bringing in new people to help us achieve our design and project goals. We are also focussing more of our sales effort on the distribution market hiring senior channel managers. Productivity and performance against targets is exactly where I want it to be. All in all it has been a busy year, but we are winning in every area we set goals for. How would you describe the business as you operate in a number of areas?

“An open platform system is ideal because it will not present barriers to developing and upgrading your systems” 14

My experience of the Milestone business has changed over the last few years. Five years ago I was working in the industry buying Milestone products and selling them on to my customers as part of their installations. Today I work for the company as a manufacturer so I have seen both sides.

Our core message is that we are an open platform software company developing open systems-based video management solutions. We have no background in the analogue world we hit the ground running in 1998 with IP video technology. Over the course of time we have evolved and even have our own NVR range called the Husky. But the core of what we do has not changed. Because we offer an open systems approach gives end-users, integrators and technology partners alike; access to a highly versatile platform. Other technologies can be combined with our VMS capability which of course create additional value for end-users. This ability to integrate also makes Milestonebased systems more future-proof and makes them highly scaleable. Has anything changed since the Canon acquisition last year? As we discussed, my first day with Milestone last year was the same day that the big announcement was made so this past year has been my only experience as a Milestone employee. What I would say is that nothing has changed in terms of the way the business is run. We are a stand-alone company within the Canon group. I am a Milestone person and the team is Milestone. All of our energies and efforts are driven by Millstone’s head office in Copenhagen and all of our focuses in the market remain as they did prior to the deal. What trends are you seeing in the market? Remote access is certainly something we are being asked about on a regular basis and it is quickly becoming part of the projects that we are now deploying. Our Smart Client technology now offers Mobile access via tablet or smartphone. This too has evolved so operators today can turn the system backwards meaning that a smartphone can now be used as an additional surveillance camera for patrolling security guards for example. So a shop’s security guard can stream images from the shop floor to a centralised control room from the camera on his smartphone. We are getting a lot of excitement about that as a feature and it is being incorporated into a number of projects. The other trend that seems to be common to all markets is that end-users do not want to be confined to one vendor for their entire end to end system. Choice of best of breed vendors and

SMOKE DETECTION

solutions and ability to make dynamic enhancements to security as well as IT systems has never been more important. The key is to make it as easy as possible to integrate with Milestone’s VMS family and to support the customer and partners so they can customise systems to more accurately meet their operational needs. On this note we have recently launched a complete range of supplementary support packages under the banner ‘Milestone Care’ which can be purchased only through our partners. As you are an ‘open platform’ company how do you partner with other companies during their R&D processes? It is a lot of hard work because we have to come at each relationship from a number of angles. Having only ever focused on VMS and IP video we have a very stable team of highly experienced and technical people who work closely with our Alliance partners on whichever technology they are involved with. There are teams that work with CCTV, video storage, intruder alarms, video analytics, access control and more – essentially the whole spectrum of systems. Our Milestone Integration Platform Software Development Kit (MIP SDK) is a comprehensive tool that makes it easy to create applications for Milestone XProtect VMS. This helps our Alliance partners to develop the right solutions quickly. We are looking at specific integration challenges all the time. For example, for the access control market, we recently launched our own access control module for which we have written over 80% of what we know to be the comms handshakes between access control and video systems, These SDKs enable integration between most access control vendors’ systems and Milestone. We know we have a really solid two-way access control-VMS integration. What do you think of free VMS solutions offered by some camera vendors? This is something that a lot of camera manufacturers do. I would suggest that what they are supplying is not actually a free VMS in the sense of what we see as a true VMS, rather they are offering an application for delivering recorded video. If you are in a market in which you only need to record from a small number of cameras and you have very limited budget and requirements, then the free options are useable.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Bear in mind there is actually a free version of the Milestone VMS you could use called XProtect Go. However when you want to do serious video analytics, deliver real business intelligence or expand the scope of the system in a business critical environment: rolling it out across a retail chain for example or integrating video with access control or intruder systems, you will see the limitations of the freeware very fast. This is again why an open platform system is ideal because it will not present barriers to developing and upgrading your systems as a business expands or changes direction.

The UK team at the opening of the new headquarters and demo room in Reading

With cameras capturing ever more data is business intelligence/analytics set to be a big trend? We do see a lot of that. As the sizes of the video images are getting larger the amount of detail from each camera is increasing massively. We are working with a number of different technologies and capabilities to get specific information from the camera using smart metadata searches for example allowing us to process data without pulling all of the video across the network all of the time. CCTV footage is far more than just the video image it is a data source and while most systems are used for monitoring and securing people, perimeters and access, they can do much more than this.

“My first day with Milestone last year was the same day that the big announcement was made so this past year has been my only experience as a Milestone employee. What I would say is that nothing has changed in terms of the way the business is run” 15

INTERVIEW

“I have made my whole career in this industry promoting and evangelising IP video but I don’t believe that analogue will be dead even five years from now. There is just too much of it in the infrastructure of the nation” IP video systems do not need to be used solely for security purposes. During the conversations we have when we put a team around the table you can see that the people entrenched in security view of video systems see CCTV as a reluctant but necessary purchase. But when you start talking about what video analytics can deliver today right across the business, you find marketing heads, brand heads and other operational managers sit up and take notice. By looking beyond pure security to other operational benefits you get much more rapid ROI because the video system becomes a business asset not merely an overhead. What will the trends be in 2020? Will analogue be no more, will we have 20K cameras?

I have made my whole career in this industry promoting and evangelising IP video but I don’t believe that analogue will be dead even five years from now. There is just too much of it in the infrastructure of the nation with an abundance of coax cable in our buildings, stations and cities. We are already working on ways to transmit HD over coax and to get better quality, resolution and information out of analogue technologies. In the future, I doubt anyone will be selling new analogue equipment in anything like the quantity it does today and the quality of network cameras will continue to rise and the price fall as new technologies come to the fore. We will see more analytics on-board, recording at the edge and cloud-based communications play an even bigger role in security. But whatever else evolves in the market I know our customers will be safe because of our open platform policy and our software upgrade plans and services packages help keep them up to date with the technology of the day.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

Appliance analyses up to twelve IP channels

Compact encoder for easy upgrading of analogue to IP Axis Communications has introduced the compact Axis M7011 Video Encoder. The single-channel video encoder offers easy integration of analogue CCTV cameras into an IP-based video surveillance system. The unit provides H.264 video compression performance in a small package, without any limitation of the number of individually configured video streams. The video encoder is suitable for all analogue camera types, both fixed and pan/tilt/zoom cameras. Featuring Power over Ethernet (PoE), the same Ethernet cable is used for both data and power. The video encoder also features a card slot for edge storage with microSDTM cards or NAS (Network-Attached Storage). Axis Camera Companion and Axis Video Hosting System are supported. www.axis.com

The DVS 2200 IPS from Dallmeier is a server appliance for the analysis of up to 12 IP video channels and the recording of up to 24 IP video channels. Both the analysis software (DVS Analysis Server) and the recording software (Smavia Recording Server) are already installed by the manufacturer and can be configured easily with a browser via Ethernet. The DVS 2200 IPS is based on the SEDOR technology, a self-learning video analysis technology which provides results using image analysis algorithms and the constant adjustment of the system parameters to the current surrounding conditions (auto-adaptation). Analysis results can be output in real-time directly to the external management clients PGuard advance and SMAVIA Viewing Client. In addition, they can be sent as a message in XML format or used for the control of external relays over Ethernet. The results of counting applications can be represented graphically or in tabular form using the optional display and evaluation module SEDOR DiViStic over Ethernet with a browser. www.dallmeier.com

his recorder supports standard analogue technology and both HD-SDI and Ex-SDI format inputs to provide high definition images over existing coaxial cables. Although the menus and documentation refer to many IP related terms, it is quite easily possible to install with basic CCTV knowledge. A monitor of at least 1920 x 1080p resolution must be used in order to access the menus. The recorder has 16 inputs that can be a mix of analogue (including 760H and 960H standards) and Ex-SDI or HD-SDI. This allows legacy analogue recorders to be replaced and selected camera upgrades to high definition images to suit customers’ budgets. A cable distance guide is given in the quick installation guide rating RG59 to “about 140 metres” and RG6 to “about 180 metres” for HDSDI with Ex-SDI approximately twice this distance however cable construction and condition must also be considered when upgrading old installations.

T

Performance The recorder was very quick to set up and have operational. Tests were conducted with a standard resolution analogue camera feed and a Grundig Ex-SDI output camera. Both were autodetected and immediately began recording. After logging into the unit a lower-screen information banner called from the right mouse button provides information such as Time & Date and recording status and gives access to basic Search, Copy, Multi-Screen, Freeze Frame and Main Menu functionality. The HD benefit when compared to the SD input is clearly evident when observing wide areas and the results with an HD test card were impressive with over 1700 pixel resolution identifiable from a visual source. Recording time could not be calculated during a relatively short test period. While the HD-SDI images are transmitted in an uncompressed format they are H.264 compressed for storage onto the drive. The Recording Status screen showed 25 images per second bit rates of

808kb/s for the SD camera and 5776kb/s for the HD so this is significantly more than a typical H.264 source compressed system would produce. However with careful setup to suit the scenes observed and the large capacity drives now available this should not present a problem especially when replacing legacy low capacity recorders. An additional benefit of this unit if cameras are PTZ controlled is the lack of image latency.

Main menu options

The mouse driven main menu options are as follows; 1) System a) Date/Time – Time Zone, Daylight Saving on/off, Date format, NTP settings b) Disk – Drive full overwrite/stop, Delete data (up to 99 days), Instant playback, Disk manager c) User Setup – User & password changes, Channel access rights, Action rights per user d) Utility – Language settings, Key buzzer, System information, System logs (to USB), Recording status, Firmware update, Factory reset, Configuration import/export 2) Network a) Network – Type, DHCP on/off, Manual IP address settings b) DDNS – Activate yes/no, Set Host details c) Radius – Activate yes/no, IP address and port (Remote Authentication) 3) Device a) Camera – Activate channels, Naming, AGC/Manual Gain Contrast and Brightness settings per channel b) PTZ – Set device, Address, Baud rate and Pre-sets per channel c) Monitor – Auto sequence and interval, Multikey sequence front panel editing d) Audio – Link the 4 audio inputs to specific video channels, Output current selection or 1 to 4 e) Text – Link a video channel to serial data from Com1 (3 device types or manual configuration) 4) Event a) Event – Relay event settings and timing. Events include Password fail, motion detection,

The simplicity of set-up and operation make this recorder an ideal replacement for legacy recording devices and for installers wanting to provide HD performance video loss and Hard Drive fail. Sub menus allow Email and FTP alerting b) Motion – Zone settings in a 10 vertical x 15 horizontal block grid c) Sensor – Inputs 1 to 16 as N/O or N/C contacts individually set 5) Record a) Record – Record mode (Continuous, Manual or Schedule), Pre & Post event durations The front panel Power switch is active by default so it is important to establish user rights and restrict this to Administrator level only, if it is to be accessible to multiple operators. The System User Setup menu also allows some additional security levels such as 2 Men Security and Auto log out after 1 to 60 minutes of inactivity. Restoring factory defaults keeps any video recordings intact. It was noted that the Event Motion setting process was temperamental with the system appearing to freeze with no mouse or front panel response for about 30 seconds until the log-in screen appeared.

Image searching The Search facility gives a very good timeline that can show individual or all cameras. It spans 10 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours or a full day midnight to midnight. Using the system to search for specific incidents is very easy and intuitive, the up to 64 times reverse and fast forward play that can be activated via the screen icons or the front panel jog-shuttle control make reviewing large amounts of footage a straightforward task. The FFWD and RWD buttons act as single frame advance or rewind when in pause mode making selection of still frames for image capture easy. A red line indicates your position on the timeline and while this can’t be dragged to a new position the mouse can be used to directly select a new time. The timeline can be switched to identify All, Motion, Sensor or Text recording events. Replay can be performed for individual cameras or from multiples in pre-set formats or custom created views. A Thumbnail mode gives a 7 vertical x 5 horizontal range of images between two date & time selections, simplifying the process of identifying scene changes over time. Images can be exported to an external USB connected drive by selection of “From” and “To” Date & Times; an indication of likely file size is given on screen.

22

Construction The Front panel is well laid out with a central jog/shuttle control and the input selection and function buttons to the right hand side. Two front mounted USB sockets can be used for the mouse and image archive purposes. A power switch is located beneath the cursor buttons but this can be software restricted. On the rear panel are 16 BNC video input sockets identified as “VIDEO IN HDSDI/960/SD/DR”. Above these are a BNC socket for a Spot monitor output, 4 audio in and 1 audio output phono sockets and a bank of sensor in and relay out push-fit terminal connectors. To the right hand side is the HDMI monitor output along with VGA, Ethernet, eSATA and RS232 connectors. Power input is at the left of the rear panel by way of an un-switched IEC connector. The unit is well built with a main PCB of 37 x 19 cm holding all of the main components. Two subPCBs are used to hold some of the rear mounted sockets (alarms and audio) and a larger frontfacing PCB for the user controls. A Western Digital Purple 2.0 TB hard drive was fitted with internal mounting space and connectors for three more drives. Space is also available for a DVD or Blue Ray drive but none was fitted in the tested unit. A standard 250watt PSU module keeps all of the mains voltages contained. There was no significant heat generated by any of the devices and good airflow through the chassis should ensure long term reliability when in a controlled environment. A single monitored fan vents to the right hand side of the case.

Conclusion The simplicity of set-up and operation make this recorder an ideal replacement for legacy recording devices and for installers wanting to provide HD performance without providing IP connectivity and needing IT skills. The ability to directly compare SD and HD images will probably also help encourage end users to upgrade more of their cameras when they see the improvement in detail available.

DETECTION

PIRs in the modern world The PIR (passive infrared radiation) detector has been part of the intruder set-up since the 70s, but has it changed at all in recent years? We take a quick look at the technology today

S

ecurity systems can use a number of methods to detect motion as part of an intruder alarm installation. These include microwaves, ultrasonics, tomographics (radio waves) and most commonly PIR detectors. Sometimes the PIR is used alongside video to provide verification of an intruder and more recently combinations of sensing technologies (such as PIR with microwaves) in one unit have been launched to combat the problem of false alarms. The PIR itself is used to detect movement by sensing body temperatures in ambient surroundings.

“Ten years ago, installing a PIR system would take 30-60 minutes but now you can install within half of the time”

24

Not just about security Today the PIR sensing capability is used to trigger not only security systems but is used in building automation for energy saving solutions, such as only turning on lights when someone enters a room or for opening doors or even triggering recorded messages in museums etc. In terms of security the guiding principle behind the PIR technology has not changed, but along with so many other systems it has become more intelligent. The built-in decision making and optical performance has improved drastically, enabling the PIR system to judge if movement was caused by a real intruder, or just hot air or other thermal sources. As these judgements have become more accurate, PIR systems have become far more reliable. According to Farshid Ossareh, Product Marketing Leader at Honeywell Security there have been dramatic improvements in ease of install: “Ten years ago, installing a PIR system would take 30-60 minutes but now you can install within half of the time,” he says. “This has been a great time saver for installers, particularly those who work on larger sites which require multiple installations. Gone are the days where an installer would need to come back the next day, or more, to finish an installation.”

The main improvement that has enabled the times savings for installers has been the development of wireless PIRs and today, in terms of functionality, wireless PIR is catching up to wired PIR, with performance and extended product lifetime encouraging more customers to make the switch. “The change from wired to wireless PIR can be very beneficial for residential applications,” says Farshid. “Residential environments are often not as easy to wire due to space constriction and the design layout of the building, so installers will spend the majority of their time on site with the homeowner just deciding where the wiring will go! Using a wireless PIR system completely removes this barrier, so the install is quick and easy for both installer and homeowner. The homeowner also has more flexibility to request to replace the PIR as they see fit, ensuring the system remains useful even if changes to the building layout are made.” However, there are some commercial environments where a wired PIR system may be more beneficial. When commercial environments are already heavily wired with enough space, it is relatively simple to run another wire from sensor to control panel. This is a particular benefit considering that wireless is the more expensive solution to go for, so for smaller businesses that may have tighter budgets wired PIR will provide similar functionality at a lower price point and don’t need a site visit to replace the batteries. These days everyone is talking about integration and the PIR fits well within a total security system, particularly when supporting CCTV. “Adding a motion sensor to a CCTV system can be a huge boost to operator and security guards’ productivity,” explains Farshid. “If a PIR sensor is set up to highlight movement then security staff no longer need to spend the majority of their time monitoring banks of screens. Security staff can therefore focus their efforts on deciding whether incidents are suspicious or not, and reacting when necessary.” PIRs can provide similar benefits to access control systems. Many large retailers use PIRs to monitor for movement when approaching their shop doors, opening automatically if appropriate. Again, the PIR sensor can provide the first layer to alert security staff to someone’s presence so they can take suitable steps. So over 40 years after the PIR first came to market it is still an important piece of a security system and combining the technology with other devices can help reduce false alarms, improve protection and save money.

INSIDE STORY

Solar powered HD surveillance elivering high quality HD surveillance in remote locations, without access to mains electricity has always been a challenge for the security industry. The requirement for security does not always coincide with the availability of electricity and communication systems to relay footage to where it is needed. The Patent Pending Sunstone Solar Wireless HD CCTV System has been designed, tested and developed to provide HD CCTV surveillance in remote and harsh environments using solar power to generate electricity and be completely self-sustaining. The system is powered using a 500w combination of solar panels, custom engineered for optimum solar angles in a range of locations across the world. The energy from the sun is harvested from the panels and stored in the waterproof, self-heating, cooling, internally fused and vented batteries, which have been designed to withstand deep cycling, high and low environmental temperatures from -50 to +60 degrees Celsius. The power generated from the solar array and battery system can power any IP CCTV and wireless access point or telecommunications device. A recent project required, the system to be operational in a highly corrosive environment and deliver HD quality surveillance which was relayed via wireless PtP and PtmP ethernet bridges to a monitoring station at speeds of between 10mbps and 1gb. The system will support any wireless units on the market today making it suitable for use across the world. The PTZ and wireless access point is elevated using a lattice tower, which is fabricated using galvanised steel to provide stability, rigidity and protect from hydrogen sulphide corrosion. The lattice tower has been specifically developed for exposed, high wind load locations. The system cabinet is a welded stainless steel enclosure frame, providing natural airflow throughout the cabinet twin skin walls and is designed for extreme temperature ranges between -40°C to +60°C, high protection against corrosion and is polyester powder coated with UV protection to prevent degradation. The solar system controller provides the ability to monitor in real time and control all aspects of the solar system, including solar and

battery performance. Also, the controller provides a real time GPS location, alerts on system threats using a sensor and gauges (like temperature or snow build up) and can instruct various components to power up and down. To find out more about solar powered surveillance technology and the practicalities of the system we spoke to Simon Legrand, Director of Sunstone IP Systems:

What happens when there is no sunshine? Photovoltaic panels use direct or indirect sunlight to generate power, though they are most effective in direct sunlight. Solar panels will still work even when the light is reflected or partially blocked by clouds.

Is it possible to combine the solar with wind power too? Yes, the system can be run in combination with a wind turbine to generate electricity to charge the batteries.

How long can a system typically run without mains power? The system has been designed to operate 365 days of the year without mains power and is completely self-sustaining. The system sends daily reports to operators to monitor performance. If we remove the PV panels, the entire system can fully function for 14 days.

How does your partnership with Atom work? We work with Atom to design, prototype and test our novel and innovative technologies. This system is our first and we have a number of other systems which are currently being tested, including solar powered buoys for wireless networks and surveillance at sea.

Do you supply the camera or can this be sourced by the installer? We primarily provide the system which delivers power and this can be to any device, whether this is sourced by us or alternatively specified by our clients. However, we’ve had requests for delivering power to non-surveillance devices, including cathode protection and telecommunications. sunstone-systems.co.uk

IFSEC ‘15 – AFTER THE EVENT This year marked the second year of IFSEC International being held at ExCeL London after a long stint in Birmingham. Was it a tricky second outing or a triumphant return? We take a look back at some of the show highlights

W

here else would you see a robot, and inflatable van and a couple of big motorbikes but at IFSEC International the annual security trade show? Throw in your usual camera props of Scalextric and roulette wheels alongside alarms ringing and warning lights flashing and you have an array of ways that companies used to show you how good their equipment was over the three dayer. We’ll leave the “how long it takes you to hammer in a six-inch nail” attraction to make its own way into IFSEC folklore. But how was it for you? In general most people we spoke to thought the show was a success. The numbers may be up or down (depending who you speak to) but the consensus is certainly that the quality of visitors and the quality of technology on show had never been higher. Sure, we get more software at the event these days, but with the Internet of Things and us all being IT literate why wouldn’t we? And with the widespread availability of data connections and smartphones the increase in companies showing home automation and security apps rose to another level, but we expected that. So was there anything we didn’t expect? There were some things that caught the eye at the event this year (and we don’t just mean RISCO having the best on-stand coffee or Dorma handing out squishy pink elephants) we mean the technology launches that wowed. Companies we are familiar with were well met by some we don’t know so well such as RFID Secure and ArgusGlobal who joined their larger friends with impressive solutions for the security market. There were also some news announcements made during the event, so here (sustained by bacon rolls from the FSJ installer café) is the potted rundown of IFSEC 2015 for those who missed it:

FSA, ECA and NSI sign MoU

Pictured (L-R): NSI CEO Richard Jenkins, FSA Chairman Pat Allen, ECA Group CEO Steve Bratt

28

The Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) the Fire and Security Association (FSA) and the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at IFSEC 2015. As a result of the agreement ECA and FSA members will be eligible for discounts on NSI initial certification fees and courses, while NSIapproved companies who apply for FSA or ECA membership will receive a discount on their first year’s subscription fee. "We’ve worked together on a number of issues over the years, so formalising this relationship in

this way was a natural move," says FSA Chairman Pat Allen. "This is a crucial time for the electrical, fire and security industries and this agreement will mean we are able to combine our expertise for the good of the industry and allow our respective members access to the others' offerings at a reduced rate." Richard Jenkins, Chief Executive of NSI, commented: “The ECA, FSA and NSI are committed to improving industry standards, ensuring clients receive the highest quality service from their contractors and helping businesses evolve and grow, so it seems fitting to put this agreement together now. This should help firms of all sizes have access to the services and support they need.”

Bravida and Panasonic agree CCTV deal

Sven Klockare, CEO of Bravida Fire and Security and Isao Shimada, Director of Panasonic Security Systems

Panasonic agreed a deal with Bravida Fire and Security, which will see the integrator add Panasonic’s surveillance products to its portfolio. The agreement is part of a reciprocal deal which saw Panasonic add Bravida’s access control hardware to its line up in 2014. Contracts were formally signed at IFSEC 2015. Sven Klockare, CEO, Bravida Fire & Security, said: “Panasonic has a reputation for providing evidential quality surveillance technology. This commitment to quality fits very well with how Bravida positions itself. We see this as an essential part of our overall solution offering and we are proud to become a strategic partner to Panasonic in Europe.” Andrew Dicken, Head of Panasonic Security Systems said: “The agreement certainly strengthens our ability to offer full security solutions Europe wide.”

IFSEC 2015 PROMOTION

GENETEC ENJOYS A LIVELY SHOW Genetec, manufacturer of unified IP security solutions, showcased its latest security innovations and new products at IFSEC

A

t IFSEC Genetec demonstrated a number of innovations including Security Center 5.3, the latest version of its open-platform IP security system that unifies video surveillance, access control and automatic number plate recognition, supporting hardware and software solutions from hundreds of technology partners. Andrew Elvish, Vice President, Marketing & Product Management at Genetec told us there had been strong traffic throughout the event: “We have had a really lively show and on our booth we have had a lot of interest around three major areas; body worn cameras, the cloud and access control. “We have seen a rise in the popularity of body worn cameras and we know how important they are to law enforcement and community groups, but one of our concerns was that camera discussions missed the point. What we found that no-one was talking about was what would happen to the data once collected and how it is managed. Today everyone is storing information in different ways and can’t make sense of it – it needs to be

tied into your existing security set-up in the same way as a fixed camera. We had various partners including B-CAM, GoPro, Vievue and Zepcam on our booth showing how Genetec Security Center 5.3 can ingest all of the data and make it more manageable and part of a whole security picture. “Cloud was also a popular topic on the booth. We have been leading the way in hybrid cloud solutions building choice into the system. At the event we showed Cloud Archives which is a brilliant option. We have also had a number of meetings about Cloud Federation services for server management in the Cloud linking all sites together. “Thirdly we have also been showing we have taken AutoVu (the ANPR solution) to the Cloud enabling installers to be able to use cameras from any manufacturer. We have developed Cloud plate reading for authorised advanced recognition and access control.” www.genetec.com

AXIS REDUCES VIDEO BANDWIDTH AT IFSEC Axis Communications demonstrated how it is continuing to innovate and deliver cutting-edge IP video technologies for a smarter and safer world at IFSEC International

A

xis showcased a host of new technologies and innovations at the international security trade show and invited attendees to share in the experience of how partnering with Axis can help businesses achieve their goals and even discover new markets and new commercial opportunities. We spoke to Atul Rajput, Regional Director for Northern Europe at Axis, who told us that the company has always been a staunch supporter of IFSEC: “This is one of the premier events for us and this year was busier than last year showing that the show has settled into its London venue. Our stand was very busy throughout the three days. “In all my years at Axis I don’t remember another year in which we had so many innovations as we had this year. Certainly one of the highlights for 2015 was our new Zipstream technology which reduces the bandwidth

www.psimagazine.co.uk

requirements of a surveillance system by up to 50% using the existing H.264 standard. It will work with any video management system without any development and it is striking a chord with the market as there is a demand for more economical and efficient use of bandwidth with video. As we move to 4K we will have more pixels and more departments will want to work with the data – this has an overhead. Zipstream is optimised for surveillance and gives the user evidential quality content where you need it. “Going forward, we have been talking a lot about the Internet of Things and the Internet of the Security of Things, particularly with predictions of 50 billion devices being online by 2020. Even if this figure is a high estimate the interconnection of devices means that video has a role to play. We will see more new devices such as our IP speakerphone come to market and intelligent system networking will be a trend that the security industry will be a major part of in the future.” www.axis.com

ctive in 95 countries worldwide, Vanderbilt currently supplies and supports in excess of 9,000 customers and has a portfolio that comprises over 2,000 products that comply with the latest editions of the relevant standards that are applicable in each country. PSI caught up with Joe Grillo, CEO of Vanderbilt Industries and found out that the company had seen a tremendous reaction from visitors: “IFSEC 2015 is the first show ever for Vanderbilt in the European market following the acquisition and we’ve had an overwhelming response to being here. “We had new products at the event from across our three product lines; access control, intrusion and video CCTV, but for us the main thrust of the show was to launch the brand to the market – although we did have a lot of customers looking at the new products too! We also featured two access control products that are established

Vanderbilt systems in the US the Bright Blue and SMS enterprise system. “In years to come you will see a strong presence from us at IFSEC and we will invest a lot of time into growing the brand and the business in our core market sectors in Europe. We are focussed on growth, technology investment and perhaps other acquisitions should something come along that fits our requirements. In terms of IFSEC, I cannot imagine us not being at the event next year and for many years to come.”

his year Seagate had a greater presence than at any previous IFSEC event and with many of the largest names in the industry, most of whom were exhibiting as well, incorporating Seagate Surveillance HDD directly into their own products and solutions the show was a busy one for Larry Lummis, Director of Consumer Electronics Product Line Management. Speaking to PSI at the event, Larry told us that the show gave the company the opportunity to talk about its rescue services: “We have a service that should any of our drives fail for any reason we are able to recover the data. If you have ever had a drive fail you’ll know the problems this can cause, so from a security perspective this could be a catastrophe. “As a security professional you have only one job; when your customer needs the video footage you need to be able to deliver it. If you can’t do that you have failed, so our solution will safeguard your reputation. Data loss has been a problem because when it comes to surveillance, saving money is desired so they will often spend all of their money on a camera only to cut

corners with the drive. A desktop drive is designed to work eight hours a day for five days a week in a controlled environment. It is very different for 24/7 surveillance. We were the first to recognise this problem and worked on it with our partners such as Dahua and Hikvision ten years ago. “I would argue that rescue services are getting even more important as the value of data is increasing. Everyone is talking about the Internet of Things and Big Data and what these will be able to do in time is take surveillance and turn it into revenue opportunities. For example in retail you can run thermal mapping to see people flow and many other applications. I spoke to someone at the show who can track the eyes of a shopper which opens up lots of avenues. If you can share all of this data with the people that want space in a store then you can get more for it. “We are just scratching the surface of the opportunities that can arise from having so much data available, which is good for us because more data and longer retention means more storage is required and as this video information becomes more valuable to your customers you do not want to lose it!”

IDIS partners with Swift Fire & Security IDIS and Swift Fire & Security announced and signed a strategic partnership agreement during IFSEC International, at London’s ExCel. Installing over £1.4M of security systems a month, Swift Fire & Security wanted to increase profit margins by streamlining the networked surveillance systems they offered to just three manufacturers. Swift recognised that some IP manufacturers were delivering poor technical support and regularly had diluted product availability, while some systems were proving difficult and complex to implement and commission. In early 2014, Swift began evaluating a number of network surveillance solutions including DirectIP from IDIS. Tony Bates, Security Director at Swift Fire & Security, commented: “We carefully evaluated IDIS DirectIP against a number of other IP systems and quickly realised that it offered us what we were looking for in terms of functionality, performance and simple plug-and-play installation as well as providing every element

required to implement a complete network surveillance solution. “Having made our final decision to make DirectIP one of our network surveillance offerings, it made perfect sense to sign the official partnership agreement at IFSEC.” Jamie Barnfield, Senior Sales Manager at IDIS Europe, added: “We’re thrilled to sign and announce this agreement at IFSEC with the atmosphere and excitement of the show. One of the top security systems integrators in the UK, Swift Fire & Security is also one of the most established and well-respected in the industry. To have the Swift team validate IDIS and DirectIP here on the IDIS stand at IFSEC, is truly a great honour. We’re very much looking forward to supporting and working with the Swift team moving forward.”

Protection against RFID card cloning attracts attention One of the busiest areas at IFSEC was the RFID Secure stand on which the company showed the ease in which access control RFID cards and bankcards can be cloned. The ID card carried by staff, visitors or contractors will reportedly give up its code to any reader operating on that radio frequency. This means that a third party with an easily concealed scanner could walk through a crowd, ride on public transport, a lift or escalator, or in any other crowded area and scan targeted RFID enabled access cards and then write that scan to a blank card. All without the data owner/card holder ever knowing it happened. The third party then can produce an exact clone of the key with the same level of access that the owner has. The scanner doesn't care if the codes are encrypted - all it sees is a string of data which it copies exactly. In turn the security system will only record that the employee is ‘in the building’, even though they may be in a different country. Another major problem at the moment involves the use of contactless payments such as those made by Oyster cards used by Transport for London to track and charge commuters on its trains. If the commuter presents the Oyster card

ith award-winning products covering every aspect of external and internal security requirements and a modern stand at IFSEC, Texecom enjoyed a phenomenal event as Marketing Director Clym Brownexplained: “Texecom typically enjoys a high level of customer interest as we tend to draw a crowd, but we were delighted and slightly taken aback by the excitement and interest generated by the show,” he said. “Texecom’s electronic security products and solutions cover a wide range of applications, from small domestic homes through to large scale high-security applications. Our advancements across our entire range was well received, and it was great for us to interact and demonstrate to so many installers, specifiers, integrators and facilities managers, who were universally excited about our recent developments and our plans for the future. “Our stand theme was ‘Welcome to your secure connected world’, highlighting our secure remote communication services, and WiFi and mobile app connectivity. Our developments in this area created a lot of interest, particularly our new Premier Elite WiFi module that allows any of our Premier Elite range of control panels to connect to home networks. This, combined with our recent mobile app updates that offer push notifications and IP camera control, really

puts homeowners in charge of their own security, and offers installers an upgrade path for previously installed systems. The integrity of our solution is crucial, and installers have been impressed by the lengths we have gone to ensure that these latest connectivity options are as secure as possible. “We were also delighted to showcase our upcoming new ‘Odyssey X’ range of external sounders. This innovative new range features backlighting and custom-made graphic inserts for installer branding – removing outdated screen printing and offering installers a high quality professional branding experience. The response that we have received for this new product range has been incredible, and we are now gearing up our production capacity to cope with the demand!” And so what about next year and IFSEC 2016? Clym is very excited about the technologies to come: “IFSEC 2016 is going to be an amazing show for us, as we have an exciting pipeline of new innovations that build on our recent successes.,” he says. “This promises to be another busy year for Texecom product development, but IFSEC 2015 has proved to us that we are on the right track, and we can’t wait to unveil the next generation of Texecom security next year.” www.texe.com

he planning for IFSEC 2015 has been months in the making and has involved all parts of Paxton in some way. It marked the company’s 30th year in the security industry and also the preview of net10, Paxton’s fully integrated building intelligence system. We caught up with Paxton CEO Adam Stroud to find out how it all went: “IFSEC 2015 did not just go well, it went better than we could have possibly hoped,” he said. “We are absolutely thrilled with the attendance to our stand and the positive feedback we received. “My feelings are best summed up by an anecdote from the stand party on Wednesday evening. It was around 6pm and the rest of the exhibition hall was completely empty. As I approached the Paxton stand I could hear the growing sounds of music and laughter. When it came in to view I held back in the empty corridor for few minutes to enjoy the sight of the stand as an oasis of activity, bustling with customers and staff. Two blokes walked past me and, looking in

to see what all the noise was about, one said to the other, 'That's how to do it'. I couldn't have agreed more.” So what was causing the biggest stir on the Paxton standthis year? “The preview of our brand new fully integrated building intelligence system, net10, proved to be the biggest and most significant sales event in the history of Paxton,” says Adam. “net10 is true to Paxton’s brand values offering simplicity with a high level of innovation and original thought. “Our stand was consistently busy for the full three days with hundreds of customer meetings taking place. Our main objective was to generate interest in the net10 training sessions running later this year and we signed up over 300 companies to attend.” And are you looking forward to IFSEC 2016? “IFSEC is one of the largest security exhibitions in the world and will always be important to us,” explains Adam. “It is the ideal platform to meet with our customers, demonstrate our product offerings and gain feedback from the industry. “The reaction from visitors at this year’s show confirmed Paxton are headed in the right direction and I look forward to the future and everything we have in store.” www.paxton-access.co.uk

inside a wallet to the barrier reader it is possible for the scanner to actually take note of a contactless bank card instead. This can lead to confusion over payments and is known as ‘card clash’. It is down to the card owner to prove this error to receive any money back from being overcharged. “Our products give protection against this very real risk of electronic invasion known as electronic pickpocketing,” said Robin Rager, Director at RFID Secure. “They protect against identity theft and provide security for corporate or personal information. Our products include RFID blocking sleeves, wallets and purses, passport cases, badge holders and more, so any item has a safe and secure RFID blocking solution.” PSI will put the solutions to the test in a future edition of the magazine.

Facial recognition with artificial intelligence

Aurora launched FaceSentinel, a biometric access control authentication product powered by Deep Learning, at IFSEC. Designed for integration with existing access control systems, the system uses AI and infrared light to achieve recognition speed, accuracy and reliability. FaceSentinel works with existing access control systems to authenticate passholders: a registered user swipes his or her pass card or key fob and FaceSentinel confirms whether the person holding the credential is the same person registered within the organisation’s access permissions system. This authentication happens in a second or less, thanks to Deep Learning, a technique used to create a highly optimised Artificial Intelligence. It works by first creating a blank “brain”: an artificial neural network. This brain is then trained to recognise faces by presenting it with millions of face image examples, enabling it to become more experienced, faster and more accurate at the facial recognition task than any human or existing technology could be. The technology behind FaceSentinel also includes the use of infrared cameras to overcome

www.psimagazine.co.uk

the inherent challenge presented to facial recognition by fluctuations in natural light. Gary James, Aurora’s Head of Sales and Customer Relations, says: “This is the first time the security industry has seen Deep Learning and Artificial intelligence harnessed to create a fast, powerful and truly reliable access control product,” he says. “It’s unobtrusive – the user doesn’t need to present themselves to a finger or handprint scanner – and safe: only face templates are stored, not images of users. FaceSentinel is Wiegand and RS485 compliant and so can be added seamlessly to 90% of the world’s access control systems. For high security sites it provides true authentication and peace of mind.”

4K lenses for a growing market Theia Technologies launched a range of 4K 12 megapixel lenses at IFSEC 2015. These lenses will reach the EMEA market from October 2015 just as 4K is beginning to accelerate. According to the latest market data from analyst IHS, EMEA revenues from 4 megapixel (MP) and above network cameras are forecast to grow three times faster than average revenue growth across all network camera types over the next five years. Theia’s new lenses offer resolution performance which matches the image quality improvements which all types of 4K sensor cameras promise (but are not necessarily delivering). The lenses are designed to resolve the 1.55 micron-sized pixel of the smaller 1/ 2.3” 4K sensors, while at the same time resolving the 1.85 micron pixels and covering the larger area of the 1/ 1.7” 4K image sensors. The IR-corrected lenses are 64mm long. Theia’s family of varifocal lenses will cover a horizontal field of view from 112 degrees to 9 degrees, with focal ranges of 4-10mm in Theia’s SL410 lens and 12-50mm in the Theia SL1250 lens. The new lenses will be offered in numerous configurations, including with motorised focus, zoom, IR cut filter, photo-interrupters, manual, DC auto and P iris options, as well as CS or D25 board mount versions. The SL410 4-10mm lens will also be available in a C mount version. The SL410 will ship during October while the SL1250 reaches the market during November. Mark Peterson, VP Advanced Technology, Theia Technologies, explained: “The emergence of 4K resolution in video surveillance will empower analytics-rich applications such as facial recognition, behavioural studies and ANPR, where a high level of detail and precision is required. The technology is also an obvious choice for situations in which there is a lot of activity or large areas where there are limited options for placing cameras yet the entire area needs covering such as in shopping centres, stadiums or open public spaces. In these situations, identifying a person amidst a subject-dense scene is challenging at lower resolutions. We believe our lenses will set the standard that will enable adoption of this important technology.”

A new family of thermal imaging cameras

Acal BFi announced the launch of the CCTi family of thermal imaging cameras at IFSEC. Providing an IP and analogue video output at a resolution of 384p x 288p or 640p x 480p, the CCTi thermal imaging camera performance is unaffected by fog, smoke or other effects that impair the output from a visible camera. The CCTi cameras are available at launch in four variants: • CCTi-300P-01 thermal imager offers 384p x 288p resolution and PTZ control, with analogue video output (no IP) • CCTi-300P-02 is a PTZ 384p x 288p dual visible/thermal camera with dual analogue video outputs (no IP) • CCTi-300B-01 is a bullet thermal camera with 384p x 288p resolution, providing simultaneous analogue video and IP outputs • CCTi-600B-01 is a bullet thermal camera with a higher 640p x 480p resolution, providing simultaneous analogue video and IP outputs Multiple lens options are available to give the required field of view and range. According to the company, because these thermal imagers work are equally effective in daylight or at night, they offer users a low total cost of ownership compared to conventional visible CCTV systems, since no area lighting is required for the imagers to work. Alex Schneider, business development director at Acal BFi, said: “Acal BFi has introduced the CCTi thermal cameras to give Europe’s security integrators and installers a new option offering better value for money than any previous thermal camera.”

There is no need to manually enter MAC/Serial numbers. To further streamline the installation process, a single KT-1 controller can also act as a head IP controller’ for more than 30 additional controllers when communicating with the EntraPass software. Installers simply push the touch-sensitive button and it automatically talks to the gateway KT-1 controller, thereby reducing the amount of IP connections needed and substantially reducing security set up time.

Surveillance with a panomersive experience Pelco’s Optera IMM Series camera with SureVision 2.0 provides a ‘panomersive’ experience with seamless situational awareness which provides stitched and blended panoramic views. Launched at IFSEC the IMM Series also enables users to zoom in for detail within multiple immersive views from a VMS. Other multi-imager solutions can be disjointed with separate streams out of order while the IMM Series transparently integrates video across all sensors in the camera, presenting a seamless user experience from setup to viewing. IMM Series camera options include 180-, 270-, or 360-degree models. All models include a camera in a compact in-ceiling mount, surface mount, or pendant enclosure that is ready to install. All models feature a metal tamperresistant design and carry an IK10 impact rating for vandal resistance. The Environmental Vandal model enables use in a range of challenging operating conditions. “The Optera series cameras should not be confused with Fisheye cameras,” explained Mark Pritchard, EMEA Marketing Director for Pelco. “The Optera enables the viewing and recording of panoramic views. Electronic pan, tilt and zoom functionality allows operators to zoom in on areas of interest and see levels of detail more comparable to a PTZ dome. Client-side de-warping ensures Pelco’s VideoXpert and other VMS solutions see the Optera series as a single camera for licensing and video management purposes. SureVision 2.0, 130dB Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), ensures high-contrast and demanding lighting conditions present little problem.”

SECURITY TODAY

Integration and the IoT How smart is your house? Have you noticed a rise in home automation interest? We try to predict the future and the impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) on security technology

O

ver recent years, visitors to security trade shows around the world will have been told about integration and how various systems could interact. In reality it was a bit of pipe dream as systems from different manufacturers didn’t really communicate too well with other, but since the development and rollout of IP in the security world the integration of different technology disciplines has taken hold. Add in various open platforms, connectivity options, software development kits and operating systems and today we are surrounded by security installations made up of various components operating together as one solution. One of the major new trends that installers cannot fail to have noticed surrounds the implementation of security (normally cameras and alarms) into home automation. The lure of offering wireless automation which allows security, lighting, heating and remote monitoring has attracted a number of established security systems manufacturers to join in. The appeal of running a home through a smartphone has given some intruder companies a new avenue to explore and a new generation of customers to talk to about integration. And not only is it the established industry names focussing on this market but new ones like

www.psimagazine.co.uk

BeON, Doorbot and MyIntercom are launching products into the domestic security market that offer access control, remote video access and lighting options. Mostly these involve the use of a smartphone as people in the 20-35 age bracket seemingly feel the need to have as many apps as possible carrying out as many daily duties as they can. Hopefully for the professional security installer the app based systems will prove little more than short-term gimmicks that will lead the customer to quickly realise that the performance of the technology falls short of their requirements – and the upselling can begin. However it is in no doubt that the number of business start-up launching products into the market is having an impact. Next month we will look at this in more depth.

Only this month it was revealed that Google would be launching a security camera to fit into its Nest system and also announced its own protocol for devices to talk to each other, Weave

Big names What is perhaps of more interest are some of the companies moving into the home automation market from other sectors where they have already achieved massive market share. Only this month it was revealed that Google would be launching a security camera to fit into its Nest system and also announced its own protocol for devices to talk to each other, Weave. Nest is a system that offers a thermostat for heating 37

control via your smartphone while Nest Protect is a smoke and CO alarm you can monitor via your smartphone. Nest Cam is a security camera you can monitor via your smartphone (there’s definitely a theme here). None of this is particularly ground-breaking but what is interesting is that it all comes from Google. Anyone with an Android phone is likely to be drawn to this (even if they don’t really, honestly, absolutely need it) because they love the IoT and being connected at all times and Google is the organisation overseeing their platform of smartphone. So what about the Apple customers? Well never missing a chance to offer technology that probably won’t communicate with anything other than another Apple product (the official company line is: “Home will unify internet of things devices around the home into one common protocol, instead of the many separate proprietary protocols that each manufacturer users for its line of devices”) the company is also entering the smart home market and HomeKit has reportedly already interested the likes of developers at Texas Instruments, Philips, Haier, Netamo, Withings, Honeywell, Marvel, Osram and Broadcom. Personally I look forward to the day we can run a feature with Marvel. Anyway, clearly integration and the IoT are well entwined and the security offer that takes in the opportunites available from combining surveillance, alarms, smoke detection etc all over a communication device is going to be a massive growth market. The companies that readers will already be familiar with from the professional security sector that are already offering systems in the home automation/integration market include the likes of D-Link whose mydlink Home smartphone and tablet app is the command centre for the D-Link range of smart home technology devices such as pet and baby monitors, smart plugs and music streaming. Again this is an ideal market for the company as it already has a home IT presence with a strong routers business established globally. In the professional sector there are a number of options from other major manufacturers that are operating in the domestic automation and monitoring market and connectivity options include Z-Wave and ULE as well as proprietary systems. While there are different protocols and platforms that systems can operate on there are many manufacturers offering solutions that are compatible with these so there is no shortage of options for growing a system. What this does mean for the future is that we may soon see companies launching services similar to mobile phone providers in that they will

provide the technology for free so long as the customer takes out a contract to run the whole system over their platform. This is all the more interesting when you consider all of the technologies this might involve and the effect it could have on the sale of those items from distributors or retailers. The service might operate in the same way companies such as Sky do business in that the receiver, aerial and wiring are all free if you pay for a year of selected channels. If this offer, and those of the protocol provider was to include security then it is of no doubt that some of the companies that produce similar components will struggle. The picture would be even more muddied if Sky, Virgin or BT decided to take on-board the services offered by their US peers with vendors like Comcast providing monitoring and remote system access to customers. In the UK we haven’t yet seen our broadband/TV/phone providers go down this route but the increase in fibre-based networking plus the IoT market and appeal of adding value to a contract may lead one or two to try it out. If this work is carried out by the Sky installer rather than a security installer there could be another impact along the line. In essence the domestic automation, IoT, integration market has sprung out of nowhere thanks to the ease of app development, cloud storage and increases in secure connectivity. At trade shows we now see manufacturers offering both a professional and a domestic range of products and completely new names coming to the fore seemingly doing very well whereas the market originators of a few years ago such as Jabbakam have pulled the plug on their service to move in another direction more suited to the current climate.

Looking ahead Home automation used to be the stuff of Tomorrow’s World and the Ideal Home Show but today it is a reality for a certain demographic of the population. Security is an obvious bedfellow especially as bandwidths are higher than ever to allow the streaming of footage and messages to a hand held device. Manufacturers such as Texecom, Honeywell, RISCO, Pyronix et al have all recognised the emergence of the new market and offer system far more advanced and feature-rich than the likes of Google. It is well worth familiarising yourselves with these systems as they will be the ones you’ll be installing once the capabilities of the entry level technology have been found wanting. And whether the future belongs to the technology provider or the protocol provider, integration has finally made the leap from trade show to our homes.

together raising standards

Meet the installer Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? We use both. Over the last 30 years we have built excellent relationships with our business partners. Our ethos from the beginning has always been to install products that are quality and have proven reliability and we keep to the brands we know and which have good support. Our engineers receive training as new products evolve which means they are comfortable and confident with the products they are installing There is absolutely no point in installing cheap alternatives which result in callouts and expensive engineering time – it is not cost effective in the long term and does not enhance reputation. Our working partners, have been, and are with us for the long term and if we have any problems we know they will do the utmost to help us work through to get to a solution. Is third party accreditation beneficial to your company? It is absolutely essential. When we started M J Security Systems in 1985 becoming an NSCIA (now NSI) approved installer was our number one priority and crucial to our long term business plan and objectives for the market we wished to target. Insurance companies are normally insistent upon it for commercial properties. It provides our clients with the assurance that our installations adhere to stringent industry standards. This is obviously necessary for the commercial installations but for the domestic clients, who maybe get confused with various quotations, this can be a clear differentation and reassurance that they will not be abandoned should the company cease to exist or trade. What would be a typical project for you? We cover a variety of installations. However, we do specialise in multi site colleges and schools, large commercial premises requiring CCTV, access control systems and intruder alarm. These jobs require careful project management working

alongside other contractors and they often run over several months. We have a diverse range of clients from small industrial units to prestigious 5-star hotels. Notwithstanding this, we are also very busy with domestic customers for intruder alarms, outside security lighting and door entry systems – particularly important with an aging population living alone. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? Yes and yes. When I was a lad! one of the greatest opportunities for youngsters was an apprenticeship if you didn’t want to go to University. I left school at 15 and took an electrical apprenticeship which my Dad got for me and who came to my interview. I do believe strongly in academic qualifications whether at A levels or degree standard. However, I also believe that this is not for everyone and therefore there should be the opportunity to acquire training, confidence and personal development via an apprenticeship. Historically we used the Work Experience Programme, funded by the Government very effectively and trained several engineers who have made successful careers in the business. However, we as many other small businesses do not always have the capacity or resource without financial help from the Government to commit to these programmes. During recessionary periods, the administrative burden of taking on youngsters can be very prohibitive. I think this has resulted in the growth of the security industry but with a shortage in skill set available. The security sector also needs to up sell itself as a being in the forefront of technology with great opportunities for development - it is not perceived to be as ‘sexy’ as IT or Web design etc. – yet there is as much demand and potential for a great career. Training and growing your own talent base is very important and we are presently looking at taking on further apprenticeships.

We often come across ‘get rich quick’ competitor quotations when customers often only choose to see the cost rather than the cost + quality and reassurance of a reputable company

(continued from previous page)

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Can you do it for less? We often come across ‘get rich quick’ competitor quotations when customers often only choose to see the cost rather than the cost + quality and reassurance of a reputable company. Price is important and we are as competitive as we can be without diluting our profit margin but it is impossible to compete against cheap systems that are not installed to industry standards and which are not properly authenticated. What is the security industry’s biggest myth? That if you have an alarm you have something worth stealing! Personal security is probably more important than it has ever been and if anything the common opportunist thief will go for the house without the visible alarm protection. Security is often the least necessary thing as a purchase until there is a burglary and then it becomes the most urgent and important. We are often called in after the event which is very sad. What would make your job easier? I have a great long serving and loyal team who all go above and beyond their duties. Communication at all levels is the most important and essential skill and addressing problems as and when they happen. The bureaucracy of

running a small business is forever pulling us away from our real business of actually getting out there and installing security systems. Although necessary, VAT, PAYE, Stakeholder pensions, Health & Safety, HR issues – they can all be very draining on resources and time. The answer would be less red-tape and more incentives for small businesses to expand and grow. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security product? Analytic cameras that can hone in on criminal intentions. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Oh dear I have to admit this is not a good question for me! I am the antithesis of a football follower. And this can be a pretty embarrassing failing when I have meetings with some of my famous clients of the football fraternity. I have on occasion watched the odd international match and my wife has had to tell me which team was England! So my hapless answer would be, probably yes but I am completely clueless as to when! If you won £25,000 what do you think you would you do with it? I would invest in property (if said in front of the wife), or a bigger boat if she is out of earshot!

Security for Earls Court demolition

D

emolition contractor Keltbray is ensuring the safety of its staff and visitors at a site in London with a wireless emergency system (WES+) from Ramtech Electronics. The Earls Court exhibition halls are being demolished to make way for Capital & Counties new development of 7,500 homes, a new park and over £450 million of community benefits. Keltbray began the demolition by specifying a WES+ wireless fire alarm that was subsequently mounted on its wheeled fire stations. A total of 64 call points and 64 automatic heat and smoke detectors are now fixed to the wheeled fire stations, which are positioned around the site. All the units are connected wirelessly to a central, monitoring base station. This ‘trolley-ed’ approach was only possible because the company’s fire alarm system utilises wireless technology and is totally battery powered. Nizelda Pretorius, Project Systems Manager at Keltbray said: “We mounted the fire call points along with the active heat and smoke detectors on our existing wheeled fire stations. Now all we have to do is simply wheel them to a new position as demolition progresses, and there is no need to worry about wires. The risk of fire on both demolition and new construction sites is an ever present danger. However, we are always confident that the network automatically connects to the monitoring base station wherever we position the units around the site.” “On a project like Earls Court we needed a fire alarm system that is capable of covering this vast site,” said Bobby Gannon, Site Manager at Earls Court. “The interconnecting radio units made WES+ an easily scalable system.”

Yacht owners now have remote access to video security Sailing enthusiasts moored at the Kultaranta Resort Marina in Naantali, Finland, can use a smartphone or computer to check the security of their boats and assess the weather remotely using a new video surveillance system powered by March Networks Command Professional video management software. The Marina, which was built in 2012, is located on Luonnonmaa Island near Naantali, 180 kilometres west of Helsinki. The installation was managed by Jukka Leinonen, chairman of the

52

board of Kultaranta Marina Oy working with local integrator Tele-Projekti Oy, who specified the March Networks system. The browser-based Command software accommodates up to 128 surveillance cameras, including March Networks fixed and PTZ IP cameras and third-party edge devices. It also enables remote access to live video using an iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows Mobile devices with March Networks Cloud. The cameras are connected using CAT-6 cabling to a Power over Ethernet switch and were selected to withstand the harsh winter weather of the Baltic Sea and variable lighting conditions. Because of Finnish legislation prohibiting the broadcasting of live video, the system is configured to send still images every minute to the Internet. One image is available for unrestricted viewing by guest boaters on Kultaranta’s website, but shareholders have access to a passwordprotected viewing of video from all of the cameras, allowing them to zoom in on their own boat and check its safety. Live video is also streamed to a monitor in the clubhouse, allowing resort staff to keep an eye on the marina and greet new arrivals. In the event of any reported theft or vandalism, resort staff can review archived video for evidence and provide a video clip to law enforcement authorities. Additional cameras will be installed to cover a third pier and a floating spa with saunas, a restaurant and a swimming pool later this year.

Access control improvements at London primary school receive positive comments

Delta Security has supplied and installed an EntrySign visitor and employee management system into Hackney-based Orchard Primary School. With 478 pupils, Orchard Primary School is a relatively large school and Shumon Miah, School Office Manager, says he was looking to improve the time-consuming manual entry system: “We wanted a modern system that would look professional in our foyer and provide easy, quick and secure access for visitors and employees. “We’ve received numerous positive comments from visitors on the new EntrySign system, which has been branded to match the school’s identity,” continues Shumon. “Particularly useful is its ability to pre-register guests, providing faster access and significantly enhanced security. For example, with supply agency teachers, the agency gives us a photograph and a unique code that we can upload to the system and use to grant access.” Shumon adds that the touch screen worked far better than other systems he tested and that the back-office ease-of-use was his primary reason for choosing the technology: “The numerous reporting and data storage functions are intuitive and accessible at the touch of a button.” Dave Mundy, Operations Director at Delta Security, says the EntrySign system is ideal for the primary school environment: “We can tailor the system to work with existing ID and access control systems, reducing installation costs, an important factor with public sector budgets. Most importantly in a primary school, of course, is that it’s a system that will reliably inform on who is on site at any one time and that only those meant to be there are granted access.”

Top of the class fire system English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College in Hartlepool, County Durham, is benefiting from a streamlined low maintenance fire alarm system, provided by Hochiki Europe. With a complex site layout, the ageing closed protocol fire safety system was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain, as replacement components could only be sourced from a single supplier. “We were finding it more and more of a challenge to keep the fire safety technology in top condition without disrupting classes,” explained Mick Dempsey, building manager at English Martyrs School. “So it became crucial to find a solution with minimal aftercare requirements.” The school was particularly keen to investigate solutions to reduce false alarms, caused by the frequent use of ovens, Bunsen burners and kilns in the home economics, science and craft classrooms. It was decided that the school would benefit from the use of ACC-EN multi-sensors from Hochiki Europe. Installed in the rooms most at risk from alerts caused by class work, these detectors could be programmed to detect just heat by day and heat and smoke by night, ensuring optimum safety for students, while eliminating the issue of false alarms. FB-1 Reflective beam smoke detectors were installed in the main halls and sports hall, and all of the technologies installed in the school feature open Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP), making them compatible with standard components from other suppliers, and cutting the cost of aftercare.

Security management in London Mews development Maxxess has announced the implementation of its eFusion security management solution to safeguard residents at Spring Mews, a £50 million development in Vauxhall, London, a 400-bedroom student residence and 93-bedroom hotel. To integrate advanced keyless access control, surveillance and intruder detection onto a single platform the developer, CLS Holdings plc, chose the Maxxess eFusion security management platform to run separate surveillance, intruder detection, and access control for the student residence and hotel while optimising functionality at a much lower cost than a conventional physical security information management (PSIM) solution. As a modular system built on open technology software, eFusion has delivered one common situational view via a user-friendly interface, offthe-shelf integration and future expandability with the freedom to use equipment from different manufacturers. These include: SALTO Aelement access control across 640 readers; Honeywell Galaxy intruder detection; 256 Axis IP full-HD cameras; and a Wavestore video surveillance recording platform. This set-up combined with simple, intuitive programming has made it easy for the building managers to manage individual room access privileges, arrange instant room moves, extend stays, cancel cards, enable remote-door opening, activate meeting rooms, identify low batteries and much more. They can also gather real-time audit trail data from every door, programme multiple camera views, settings and protocols and allow smartphones to be used as room keys via nearfield communications.

University of Liverpool invests in five new fire panels

Morley-IAS fire panels have been selected as part of a £600 million investment in facilities by the University of Liverpool. Five ZX5Se panels are being installed to provide protection for 350 student self-catering rooms at Philharmonic Court, a £25 million accommodation scheme due for completion by August. The single new system of 800 detection devices will be networked to the 24-hour manned campus security and reception room, where the main panel will alert staff in the event of a fire activation. Morley-IAS interfaces will also control an automatic smoke ventilation (AOV) system, door access, lift operation and gas isolation. The ZX5Se panels are being installed by MEC Electrical Integrated and the work will be completed in July, in time for the commencement of the new academic year. Contracts manager for MEC Electrical Integrated, Derek Bayliff, said: “The Morley-IAS ZX5Se panels have the flexibility and robustness that makes them well suited for use in this new university accommodation building.”

Fife Council to install 30,000 fire/CO alarm interfaces

Fife Council is undergoing a programme to install 30,000 Aico Ei414 Fire/Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm Interfaces throughout its housing stock. The units provide a dedicated connection between Aico RadioLINK smoke, heat and CO alarms with most new and existing telecare/warden call systems, enabling an emergency signal to be transmitted directly to that system if fire or CO is detected. Previously Fife Council had been using different components which did not ‘talk’ to each other, resulting in a potential safety issue. Following tests, the decision was made to install the interface throughout its entire housing stock equating to around 30,000 units. Due to the flexibility of the Ei414, a property’s smoke and CO alarms can be connected with sprinkler systems, warden call, panel systems and community alarms.

Connections Hello again, Communication failures; a long time ago when the only polled signalling was the PSTN path of a Redcare Classic, the police used to be dispatched to many a communication failure when the alarm was set. It became such an issue that a single path communication failures were not allowed to be actioned to the police unless an unconfirmed alarm had been received as well, which basically demoted the technology to that of a digital communicator, albeit one that the ARC knew the PSTN line had failed and informed the consumer / alarm company. Along came dual path signalling devices and European Standards, with signalling classified into 6 ATS grades determining when and in what timescales single path and dual path outages have to be reported to the ARC, depending on the grade of signalling. The preference for dual path signalling to date has been GPRS/GSM/3G and PSTN, or IP and GPRS/GSM/3G, but there are issues on the radio side of the signalling. More recently we have seen the likes of Vodafone and O2 upgrading networks to 4G causing major disruption to GPRS/GSM/3G connectivity and when added to the general day to day reliability of the IP/PSTN network it has on occasion buried ARC’s in communication failures. Different networks “slug” the delivery of single path failures to the ARC based on time, or whether the site is open or closed, but it’s all done within the permitted timescales of the ATS grades. However, there is not a common approach at network level to only delivering a confirmed communication failure to the ARC.

Command and control upgrade for Salford City Council

Salford City Council, which operates one of the largest public space surveillance systems in the UK, is to upgrade its central control room with Synectics’ Synergy 3 command and control platform. The upgrade is the latest phase in Salford’s use of CCTV, which in the last quarter of 2014 saw the team direct police to 220 incidents and make 64 arrests. Synergy 3, the latest evolution of Synectics’ technology, features new functionality including a customisable user interface, incident collaboration tools, and interactive mapping engine with Geospatial Information System (GIS) technology. Council staff monitor around 200 cameras across the city, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The upgrade to Synergy 3 will enable IP and analogue cameras from two separate systems, covering public and business areas, to be monitored and controlled in a single unified environment. The system will also enable the control room team to benefit from HD viewing on their display wall for the first time. Other factors that led to the decision to migrate to Synergy 3 were the improved mapping capabilities, to aid incident response, and the enhanced reporting capabilities. Deputy City Mayor, Councillor David Lancaster said: “Public safety is a top priority and investing in technology that is going to aid our highly skilled staff is important to prevent and detect crime. “CCTV is so important to public safety and security that system downtime is just not acceptable. Our Synectics solution has always been very reliable and our operators are very familiar with the system. That, coupled with the advantages of upgrading to Synergy 3, made it the right choice for us at this time.” Martyn Rowe, Head of Client Delivery, said: “For years Salford City Council’s use of CCTV has been seen as an industry benchmark for public space safety and security. We are proud to have been part of that journey and to now be working with the team there to help an already successful system evolve for the future.”

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Currently depending on how the PSTN path signals to the ARC, the radio outage is reported to the ARC via the IP/PSTN path as a single path failure. Now at this point of time the consumer has at best an equivalent of a basic communicator which is being polled rapidly for a given period, before being reported to the ARC as a polling failure when the PSTN/IP line has been cut. Depending on the grade of signalling that time could be as much as 25 hours later! Single path communication failures and the subsequent polling failures have now become a major issue for the security industry in general, consumers don’t want to know about radio failures because they can’t resolve the problem, neither can the installer. Many installers want single path failures on log only and only polling failures to be actioned, which is disastrous as a single path failure plus an unconfirmed alarm, is technically a confirmed alarm! It is my belief that the insurance world are unaware of what the installers are requesting of ARC’s or the level of communication failures that occur. Nor are they aware of the different working practices (all within the Standards) of the various network suppliers. The police service are being shielded from confirmed communication failures or a unconfirmed alarm plus single path failure (bell tamper + PSTN line cut) due to the working practices of the security industry who in turn are trying to filter out unwanted phone calls to consumers. Time for the industry and the network suppliers to get their house in order and work to a common goal.

Bye for now

Insurer improves intruder detection system Groupama is one of the largest mutual insurance groups in France. Activeille is a subsidiary focussing on the protection and remote monitoring of property and people. In 2011, under the direction of Activeille, Groupama decided to upgrade its security system in Noisy-Le-Grand site. Christophe Pillet, key-account sales manager at Activeille, and Group security expert was appointed to oversee each stage of the project. Given the surface area, location and multi-site infrastructure, Activeille had certain requirements for the security system. It required a solution that would provide remote, centralised management from security posts and also respond to the needs of the security team to improve their safety and increase their autonomy, particularly at night when the number of guards would be reduced. Activeille therefore installed Honeywell’s Galaxy Dimension integrated intruder detection and access control solution covering over two hundred zones and six Fusion NRVs at two control centres. The recorders manage eighty IP cameras, including two PTZ domes. Security guards can now monitor areas remotely from PC screens, which reduces the number of physical interventions required alone on site, thereby improving their safety and saving time.

Christophe Pillet said: "The intruder detection system is integrated with the video surveillance system, so when triggered, verification images are sent directly to the control centre, making it possible to manage the situation quickly, securely and effectively." The new security system has been designed to be APSAD R81 certified, facilitated by the NF&A2P 3-shield certified Honeywell Galaxy Dimension solution. "We have fitted access control modules and motion sensors on the main entrances and emergency exits to provide two levels of detection,” explains Christophe Pillet. “In the event of an alarm, the access control module will trigger the cameras. Hence video surveillance is in place, where cameras are automatically triggered to film the monitored area using cameras corresponding to the entrance in question. We can thereby verify the source and cause of an alarm quickly and easily. The risk of false alarms is reduced and the reliability of the system reinforced. Installing security cameras in this location has significantly reduced cases of vandalism and damage.”

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Man sure loves a Porsche

Far be it for us to say what is right and what is wrong, however this CCTV footage doing the rounds in mid-May shows one chap loving a Porsche just a bit too much for us. The video shows the man sauntering into the forecourt of a building and, checking there is no-one around, dropping his pants and showing his appreciation for the sleek racer at the exhaust pipe and front grille. Jokes about lubrication not required. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrkMxH3gC9k

Damaged goods

Three raccoons broke into a Russian software company and caused an estimated $850 worth of damage. The three animals entered YotaSystem’s Moscow offices after their trainer arrived to purchase some new software. After the three animals were left alone, they quickly escaped and began exploring the office and ripping open boxes. The raccoons appear to have fled the scene without being caught and their whereabouts are, apparently, unknown. www.youtube.com/watch?v=b05H75ojd0s

Bus driver misses train

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world‌ Light up at the pump

According to the Hindustan Times, Police have arrested a woman suspected of setting light to a petrol pump and fleeing, after a man refused to give her a cigarette. Dramatic CCTV footage captured on the forecourt of the petrol station in Jerusalem shows a woman approach a man as he fills up his car. After exchanging words, the woman can be seen strolling back towards the car, pulling out a lighter and setting the nozzle on fire. Israel Police sent her for psychological evaluations. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDDCrRNogVY

Caught red-handed, with fakes This footage taken in Italy shows two robbers rush into a convenience store to steal the contents of the till while brandishing fake handguns. All goes well until they go to exit the shop to find two policemen standing in the doorway with real guns. Needless to say, both surrendered straight away and were taken away from the scene in handcuffs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q98RtPhkP4

A Philadelphia bus driver is facing disciplinary action because she was not buckled in when she fell out of her seat and nearly hit a freight train. Onboard CCTV footage shows the driver slipping to the floor while she grabs for the wheel. The bus jumped a median and veered toward the train before coming to a halt on the tracks. In the video, the passengers could be seen flying from their seats. The driver and some of the passengers were injured. Fortunately the train stopped and workers came to help. www.youtube.com/watch?v=22HfclHVp8w
