Real revolutionaries The term ‘game-changer’ is often used at press conferences and trade shows when manufacturers launch their new technology. But how often is this really the case? here’s an old saying in entertainment that “There’s nothing new in this world, we’ve seen it all before” yet while this certainly seems to ring true in the showbiz scene, when it comes to technology there have been a number of revolutionary products that have had a major impact on the future of their markets (mostly these days from Apple). In the security business we’re no stranger to hyperbole and superlatives such as ‘unique’ and ‘state of the art’ are thrown around so often when they’re not really applicable. For example almost every single company that has ever sent in a press release to PSI has described themselves as ‘market leaders’ - yet if that truly is the case then everyone is leading the market and no-one is following it. Sure we’ve seen a lot of me-too products come on sale and we’ve also had a few launches where technology developments have been announced just to check to see if there is a market for it. That aside there have been some major launches and developments over trecent times in the security sector that have driven the market in new directions or caused rival manufacturers to sit up and sharpen their pencils. This month we asked our expert panel to tell us which products and innovations they feel have been the real game changers. Forget the continuous rise in CCTV camera resolutions, that is always going to increase and with it bring new ways to get around bandwidth and monitor limitations. And despite the marketing hype is there really any justification in calling a higher resolution camera a game changer when in six months time it will be a few MPs behind the latest releases? No, we wanted to know what the industry experts felt were the real technology revolutions; what made the market move in the same way Eddie Van Halen changed the way people played guitars in 1978 (if you were there, you’ll know). The roll out of networks has had a collosal impact on the way security is designed, installed and developed these days probably more than any other technology when you think about it. Of course there is much debate among certain media outlets whether or not the average person would really be worse off if the Internet had never been invented (no trolls, grooming, online radicalisation etc), but that’s not a discussion for us. The use of networks followed on from the days of BUS in industrial automation allowing various pieces of kit to work on the same line providing vital process information to the user. Other security developments that spring to mind are wireless alarm panels, multi-sensor cameras, biometrics, analytics and the list goes on. I’ll be on the lookout for a ‘game-changer’ at IFSEC this month and we’ll be sure to let you know if there is one. Will we find a genuine ‘market leader’ after all?

Linx International invests in Tavcom

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Tim Geddes, Joint Owner of Yeoman Monitoring Services, one of the most successful and long established Alarm Receiving Centres in the UK.

Linx International and Tavcom have announced they have concluded an agreement resulting in Linx acquiring a majority shareholding in Tavcom. Tavcom is a provider of online and classroom based security systems training. The Linx International Group includes Linx Consulting and security management training providers, ARC Training International and Perpetuity Training. “Tavcom’s unrivalled expertise in the systems training market, combined with the Linx International Group’s reputation for providing premier security management training, will provide an unparalleled offering to the sector,” said David Gill, CEO of Linx International Group. “Our plan is for Tavcom to continue to operate under its existing brand within the Linx International group and clients will therefore continue to receive the outstanding levels of service that they have come to expect. However, the inclusion of Tavcom within the Group presents a fantastic opportunity to create a global leader in both security management and security systems training”. Paul Tennent, previously Sales Director for Tavcom, has been appointed Group Sales Director for Linx International, whilst Mike Tennent (pictured above with David Gill), who founded Tavcom, has been appointed the company’s non-executive Chairman.

FIA publishes Market Review showing strong increases in orders The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has published its fourth Market Conditions Review. The report is a ‘snapshot’ taken every six month to review how the fire protection market is performing. It is based on a survey conducted by the FIA of both FIA member and non-member companies across the UK. Wave 4 of the report has revealed that: • Fire sector continues to grow with orders, invites to tender and enquires all showing strong increases when compared to the previous six months. • Tender prices are beginning to increase but in general not at the same rate as supplier prices and thus margins still remain ‘squeezed’ • Growth in the sector is also resulting in an increased need for skilled labour and training CEO of the FIA, Graham Ellicott commented on the report: “This is great news for the UK’s fire sector and most notably for FIA Members who in the last six months have received 40% more invitations to tender than did non-members!”

Can you give us a snapshot of the industry when you joined 40 years ago? When I came into the industry, the word ARC was relatively rare; alarm monitoring was perceived as a bolt on service to security guarding functions. I can remember trying to persuade a senior Essex police officer to take alarm monitoring into the Police control rooms - a hugely radical suggestion at that time. Fortunately my business and the success of ARCs in general has thrived due to the Police’s rejection of that opportunity. What are the most significant changes you’ve seen within that period? I suppose the real ‘explosion’ in market changes was partly due to the introduction of the digital communicator. It was viewed as a more reliable and cost efficient medium than the more commonplace 999 auto diallers which transmitted directly to the emergency services. The Police decision to eventually ban the use of these, combined with insurers referencing the Standards, accelerated this change. Prices are being constantly driven down, what do you feel is the long-term solution to this in order to maintain quality of service? Value for money is an understatement as far as secure ARC monitoring is concerned. Our industry is awash with newcomers who want to reinvent the wheel and in many cases pour massive resource into their projects to eventually find out that the market is actually quite benign. End users know little of ARCs and how complicated the services have become. Luckily technology and innovation has risen to the occasion making ARC reactions more sanitised and largely preset reflex actions. Standards, insurance cover and police requirements are currently the biggest anchors to ensure quality of service is not compromised. What changes do you predict within the monitoring sector and what impact will they have on Alarm Receiving Centres? Our world is changing rapidly. The consumer is well informed of the available options, which is already noticeably impacting our market. Thinking out of the box is no longer just a buzz phrase but a realistic business-critical fact. With the prevalence of smart phones, the consumer now has constant access to a powerful computer in their pockets, able to receive complex data instantly. These facilities are the beginning of the revolution of change where the consumer will eventually manage their own data from their alarms, from anywhere in the world. This is, to some extent true for both domestic and commercial markets alike. The ARC industry will have to be much more inventive if we are to keep pace with imminent change. Interesting times I am sure you will agree!

NEWS EXTRA

Ten years connected This year the Z-Wave Alliance celebrates its tenth anniversary and the sale of over 35 million products. We take a closer look at the wireless technology and the organisation behind it

ormed in January 2005, the Z-Wave Alliance is a consortium of companies in the home technology space dedicated to solidifying ZWave as the standard for wireless home control products. The principal members include; ADT, Evolve Guest Controls, FAKRO, Ingersoll Rand Nexia Intelligence LLC, Jasco Products, LG Uplus, Nortek Security & Control, SmartThings and Sigma Designs. For the security installer Z-Wave wireless protocol allows the combination of security with other home automation technologies such as remote home and business management, energy conservation, connected solutions for independent aging, property control and more. The technology requires no new wiring with the benefit of a standard that works seamlessly between brands. There are now over 1200 interoperable ZWave products available for every application. The boom in smart home services now being touted by major service providers opens the door for installers and lets them get customers past basic starter kits. PSI spoke with Mark Walters, Chairman of ZWave Alliance, about the technology and the trends over the years:

F

How was the Alliance formed?

The next ten years? “The Z-Wave Alliance will continue to grow both in adoption and membership and new manufacturers will innovate using Z-Wave as their platform for IoT and smart home products and services. As the Internet of Things becomes the Internet of Everything and vertical markets like aging in place begin to grow, we are hopeful that Z-Wave will remain the dominant wireless protocol with the largest ecosystem of products on the market for years to come.”

12

The Z-Wave Alliance was established in 2005 by a group of home control manufacturers who wanted to make the notion of smart homes a reality. At the time, there was simply a promise of home control technology with no standard that could bring the dream of an ecosystem of devices to life. Founding members Intermatic, Leviton, Wayne Dalton and Danfoss met with ZWave Technology creator, Zensys, to define the needs for the technology and create an Alliance that would standardise the technology. The goal of the Alliance was to prove certification and testing guidelines as well as brand and market development for the Z-Wave ecosystem. Since its creation in 2005, the Alliance has been the authoritative presence in the smart home, security and IoT industries with the interoperable, backwards compatible Z-Wave technology reigning as the market leader.

How has the take–up of Z-Wave grown since the early days? Z-Wave is the wireless technology of choice with over 1300 certified products, more than 300 member companies and more than 35 million devices installed worldwide. Each year, the numbers continue to grow as Z-Wave takes hold as the technology of choice in countries around the globe. This adoption, innovation and interoperability is what makes Z-Wave the world-standard wireless protocol.

What have been the technology breakthroughs in the ten years? Technology breakthroughs include: • Data rate from 9.6kbts to 40kbts to 100kbts • Single channel to duel channel to tri-channel • Improvements in radio performance • Improvements in energy consumption • Five generations of mesh-network enhancement including network-wide inclusion and explorer frame • Inclusion in ITU-T of PHY/MAC ITU-T G.9959 • Addition of IP to the edge technology (Z/IP) • Z-Wave and then Z-Wave Plus certification and branding programs • Compliance Test Tool (CTT) • Installation and Maintenance Application (IMA) tools Most recently, the Z-Wave Plus certification program was designed to help consumers identify products that are the “Next Gen” Z-Wave hardware platform or the 500 series which is known as the 5th Generation Z-Wave. Products that are Z-Wave Plus are fully backwards compatible and can work with your existing yet older smart home devices. This allows for the Z-Wave ecosystem to be boosted with new connectivity featuring sixty-seven percent increase in range, fifty percent improvement in battery life, Over the Air upgrading (OTA), and three additional RF channels.

Why should installers look at Z-Wave systems? Z-Wave is the IoT leader in the smart home and lifestyle security markets because the technology is fully interoperable between all certified products and backwards-compatible between versions. With an ecosystem of interoperable products, installers have a choice for their customers and can be assured that the Z-Wave certified products they choose will work together seamlessly after they leave. Z-Wave also offers installer tools like the Installation and Maintenance Application (IMA) which enables a technician to locally or remotely survey the signal quality at every node in the system. This can speed up installation and ensure robust performance of the smart home system. When service is needed, installers can use this network health information system to diagnose and repair problems, sometimes without the need to send a technician out directly to the home or a business. z-wavealliance.org

INTERVIEW

Power talks This month we talk to Tony Makosinski of recently formed Dycon Power Solutions about being green and the future of power supplies in the security industry ell-known in the market, Tony Makosinski is the Commercial Director at Dycon Power Solutions. In 2012 he received the ‘PSI Premier Award for Contribution to the Security Industry’ and in 2013, ‘Security Excellence Award for Contribution to Standards’. Tony also chaired the Euralarm Marketing Group and was a Director of Certalarm, the panEuropean certification organisation. Tony has often challenged the industry status quo and has helped build a bigger, better, more respected network of manufacturers, installers and end users. We caught up with Tony following the recent acquisition of Dycon by CSL DualCom which saw the subsequent division of Dycon’s existing product lines into two separate businesses, secure communications and power supplies. CSL DualCom’s Board agreed to divest the power supply business resulting in a new business, Dycon Power Solutions which relocated the manufacturing, sales and support functions of the existing Dycon range of switched-mode power supplies to a new facility in South Wales.

W

Tony Makosinski

What are the technology trends in security system power supplies? The most obvious one has been the slow realisation that the stance taken in 2004 regarding switched-mode technology was right. Everybody is now jumping on that bandwagon but practical, hard-won experience over the last eleven years has let us develop this to a higher level benefitting both installers and end-users. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is gaining ground as it is a very easy way to power devices if the correct IP network is already in place. This would gain ground more quickly if intruder alarm systems increased their IP connectivity, at

“A single, good quality, switched-mode 1A PSU can save around 250KWh of electricity per annum. Now imagine how many PSUs there are in a large hospital or educational building” 14

present that is limited to IP signalling. Using an IP network to both connect and power detectors will come in time, but at present installers seem reluctant and therefore intruder alarm detector manufacturers stick with the conventional circuitry. Do you think there is any confusion when it comes to power supplies? Not really, installers are quite sensible when it comes to realising what is best for powering intruder, access or CCTV systems, however, many will still try to skimp on selecting the right output power! The difference in cost between a 1A PSU and a 3A is very little and it is better to have spare capacity in charging the batteries and powering the system than finding out the hard way, i.e. the system fails when there is a power cut. How important is being ‘green’ these days? It is increasingly important! Last year the Government introduced a penalty system for all Government buildings, including NHS premises and schools, where each was set a target for reducing energy consumption and the building’s carbon footprint. Failure to achieve this reduction is punished by a system of fines. A single, good quality, switched-mode 1A PSU can save around 250KWh of electricity per annum. Now imagine how many PSUs there are in a large hospital or educational building; alarms, access control, CCTV and communications systems can all be 12/24VDC powered. Finally, multiply that number of PSUs by 250 KWh and there is a massive energy saving just waiting to be installed! Why should installers look more closely at the power supplies they specify? What are the benefits for them? Many just use the old maxim ‘cheapest is bestest...’ But a good, modern, professional, switched-mode PSU can save significant amounts of time and money in its life time. For example, new technology means that batteries are charged more gently increasing their life and the probability of a service call-out by up to twelve months. The latest advanced technology used in

SMOKE DETECTION

access control PSUs is designed to provide additional inductive kickback protection which eliminates the chances of powerful electric door strikes, or magnetic releases, blowing PSU fuses. This further reduces chances of door opening/closing system failure and subsequent emergency service call outs. What will be the main focus of power supplies in the future? In the future the main area under scrutiny will be batteries. At the moment they are a system’s weak point and, as such, require time consuming maintenance. Rather than using simplistic load checks it is more beneficial for installers and ARCs to be able to remotely read impedance. This way of working means that all measurements are 'absolute' and not based on specified tolerances. On-site calibration will be possible with a handheld diagnostic data logger, which has the possibility of changing fault thresholds, if necessary. This is why we took a stand to radically change the way PSUs should operate in future; it is our firm belief that if the fire industry recognises the issue, when will intruder follow?

Imagine if we could introduce that same advanced technology into 12VDC PSUs for intruder access and CCTV systems how it would improve performance. We believe that these improvements should be included in the next revision of the EN standards so that installers and end-users are not still relying on what, in many cases, is essentially still an old-fashioned car battery charger!

PRODUCT TEST he VB-H630VE dome is very well packaged with both internal and external bowl protection. Access into the camera is by releasing the three Torx head screws that hold the bowl in place. These screws are captive and the lower bowl surround is prevented from falling by an internal short steel support wire. The first impression is that this is a very well-constructed and capable camera. At just under 2 kg it is heavy for a fixed camera hence the supplied security wire which should be screwed onto the base and attached to a suitable secure fixing point. A front facing slot for an SD storage card is easily accessible. Bendable sleeved cable retaining straps are positioned in the base to allow tidy cable management. Cable access is through either a side or base located conduit threaded hole.

The main English language documents are an Operation Guide “H2M20G_E.pdf ” with 186 pages, an Administration Manual RM32AM_E.pdf ” with 140 pages and a pictorial Viewer Operation Guide “RM30VOG_E.pdf ” of just two pages. Further documentation is provided relating to the Canon and third-party software licences, release note text files and to support some additional network functionality such as working through proxy servers. For the applications there is an executable called “VBToolsInstall” that loads three programmes onto a Windows PC. These are: - VB Initial Setting Tool V6.0.1 21MB – To locate camera and change its IP address. - Camera Angle Setting Tool V3.0 25MB – To set the viewing position of the camera module. - Admin Tools Certificate V3.0 1MB – This must be run to allow access to the Admin tools. Using the “Easy Installation” option places two shortcuts on your Windows desktop giving access to the VB Initial Setting Tool and the Camera Angle Setting Tool. The VB Initial Settings Tool software is a simple application to find the camera when connected on the network and to allow the basic IP related settings to be entered. Following this, a browser can be used to connect to the camera’s menu and view the image using the VB Viewer option. It should be noted that this “discovery” mode can only be used for twenty minutes after the camera is powered up. If longer is required then the camera must be power-cycled to re-invoke the process. After changes are made the camera will re-boot taking approximately 20 to 40 seconds. The Camera Angle Setting Tool when run provides a user interface to allow the camera

The Canon VB-H630VE network camera module to be panned, tilted and rotated into the correct orientation for the scene to be observed. The 3x zoom lens can be set to provide the necessary viewing angle from a wide 111° through to a narrower 36.5°. It could be expected that this angle setting adjustment could quite easily have been included in the camera’s configuration settings rather than in a separate application but no reason is given for this. There is mention in the Operation Guide however that this functionality is “not intended for daily use” so it may be to prevent users from operating it as a PTZ device. The apparent lack of end stops on the motorised drives suggest that regular untrained use would quickly result in motor or drive failure. An English language A4 document entitled “Canon Network Camera Quick Start Guide” was supplied separately with this camera so it may have been later realised that installers would have difficulty in finding the correct procedure from the CD supplied manual. It is important to follow all of the instruction in this Quick Start information sheet or within the full Operation Guide for setting up the configuration PC and particularly to register the camera’s home page as a Trusted site in Internet Explorer. The supplied sticker which it is suggested should be “affixed to the monitor” simply states “Note: When using Night Mode, be sure to check that the Night Mode light source setting matches the lighting used”; you would not expect an operator to refer to this or change a light source so its purpose is unclear.

Camera menu options

It was noted that some of the camera default values were not as expected, such as an initial setting of 480 x 270 pixels for the main H.264 stream. One would expect this to be at its highest 1920 x 1080 to show the camera it its best rather than to suit a low bandwidth transmission channel. If the main stream is set to 1920 x 1280 and the secondary stream is set to 1280 x 720 or higher, then the maximum frame rate drops from 30 to 15 ips. The video card overwrite is disabled by default so would need to be changed or content managed appropriately for general security surveillance loop recording.

Performance

The camera performed well with good colour rendition and clear sharp images. The bowl was of a very high optical standard and did not degrade the image. The camera has very good sensitivity and maintained a good level of colour content well below 1 lux with manageable levels of AGC noise. Oddly, switching to monochrome mode at this level did not appear to show any real improvement in sensitivity and the noise level was similar. This

EDIT test 1 jun15_000_PSI_mar15 26/05/2015 17:47 Page 2

meant that the evidential value of the image would likely be of more value in colour mode. While the sensitivity was similar, the removal of the IR filter would probably allow the sensor to respond to a wider light spectrum so the quoted figures of 0.3 lux colour and 0.015 lux monochrome may have used a light source with significantly more infrared content than the low level natural and artificial lighting used during these tests. The eight privacy zone masks were relatively easy to set up but not intuitive as any new additions are placed over the most recent zone resulting in an error message if you don’t move them before resizing. The manuals provide a large amount of information on electronically zooming into preset views rather than using the whole image so it may be that the camera was originally designed with a specific requirement in mind. The preset view tool had to be closed down and re-opened before a preset tour would activate. The camera does support detection of moved or missing objects under the “Intelligent Function Settings” option but there is a disclaimer on page 109 of the Operation Guide that states “Intelligent functions are not suitable where high reliability is required”. The Guide also suggests that if the overall scene brightness changes, there may be a delay of up to 5 minutes before detection recommences. To Canon’s credit, while this “get-out” clause is possibly hidden away in a

large manual, at least they are not making extravagant claims about these features in their specification documents. Canon’s “Smart Shade Control” is used to compensate for high background illuminated scenes. The menu options allow for an enormous amount of network data security so this camera will likely appeal to any users that need to transmit sensitive video images over wide area networks. Some of the features covered in the supplied manual only apply to PTZ variants so it can be potentially confusing if you do not carefully check the scope of each section for relevance to your particular model. A facility is available to upload settings to multiple cameras but this is limited to 30 cameras. Settings can be uploaded from the camera and saved for future service replacement.

Conclusion

A very capable well-featured camera which can be heavily locked down for more secure requirements or demanding installations. This will probably not suit an installer who simply wants to fix a camera to the ceiling and go through a few minimal settings to be up and running, but for those with suitable networking knowledge this camera provides a high level of flexibility and system security with excellent image quality.

at Hadrian Technology, and a Fluke system owner for over 17 years to take a look at the unit and take it out on the road to test it in real scenarios. Here are Gordon’s findings on the 113 multimeter. What jobs did you use the product for? “Fault finding on printed circuit boards on a camera and also looking at the performance of capacitors and diodes on other equipment as well as voltage drop on long cable runs.” What did you like about the unit? “It’s a quality piece of kit with a quick response. The back light makes reading the display nice and easy.” What did you not like about the unit? “Only the fact that it can’t do load readings – but then again it wasn’t designed to do this and a higher spec model would provide the solution.” Would you recommend this product? “Yes. If you need a solid, reliable and accurate multimeter then the Fluke 113 certainly fits the bill on most levels. The backlight makes it so easy to read in light restrictive environments. It is not polarity conscious, and can determine whether there is voltage or continuity present (and both at the same time). “When I stated that it fits the bill on most levels, the only downside being that it does not measure current so unfortunately it cannot completely replace my aged trusty Fluke 77 which I use for load readings of the amp range.”

Magic detectors hit the UK market

NOTE: All technical specifications listed are provided by manufacturers 20

Security Products from Siemens has introduced its Magic motion detector series to the UK market. The Magic PIR and Dual motion detectors share the same low-profile housing so intruders cannot tell which type of detector they are faced with. The detectors are suitable for both home and commercial environments and are offered in either 12m or 18m range and are optionally available with integrated anti-masking technology. Magic Mirror is an enhancement of the Siemens black mirror technology. The dual mirror design reportedly increases the focal length, which gives the detectors more homogenous detection sensitivity, especially for wider areas. A white-light filtering system reduces false alarms caused by external light sources such as car headlights or lamps. The Magic PDM-IXE12(T) and PDM-IXE18(T) dual motion detectors offer detection of intruders with performance based on an improved version of the Siemens Matchtec algorithm, which combines passive infrared (PIR) and microwave (MW) channels to make decisions on motion within their detection zone. www.siemens.co.uk/securityproducts

EDITOR’S CHOICE

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

‘True 4K’ dome announced The WV-SFV781L dome camera from Panasonic delivers what the company is describing as ‘True 4K’ image quality and resolution at both the centre and the corners of the image. The True 4K camera can cover a view four times larger than 1080p cameras, and a view nine times larger than 720p cameras. It can also cover two and three times the distance of 1080p and 720p cameras respectively. The 1/1.7 type sensor, in combination with the Panasonic True 4K F1.6 lens, achieves low light performance at 0.3 lux in colour or 0.03 lux in black and white mode. The camera also has Smart IR-LED making it possible for clear and sharp pictures at 0.0 lux across the 4K image. The rain wash coating helps reduce maintenance costs and helps avoid the effect of the drops and dust. Virtual PTZ operation allows the user to focus on one smaller area in view whilst still recording the whole area, so no event is missed in mission critical applications. business.panasonic.co.uk

EX-SDI DVR works with all formats Grundig has launched its 16 channel EX-SDI (Extended Serial Digital Interface) hybrid DVR, the GRX-K4416A. The DVR records EX-SDI on all channels, but can record HD-SDI, 960H analogue and 760H analogue video streams simultaneously. CCTV systems using the DVR can include a combination of all coaxial-based video technologies, so existing and previously installed cameras can be re-used. The DVR will automatically configure each channel to suit individual camera video stream technologies. EX-SDI technology, like HD-SDI, enables the transmission of HD digital video, in real time, over coaxial cable. Whereas HD-SDI has a 100m transmission limitation using RG59 coaxial cable, EX-SDI will transmit 330m. This extends to 670m if the higher quality RG11 cable is used. Image quality is better than IP in live and similar to that of IP record mode. The DVR uses the simple, point-to-point installation method of analogue. www.grundig-security.com

DETECTION

Legislation changes The laws regarding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are changing for landlords. Here we look at how the legislation will affect you and your customers arlier this year it was announced that new legislation will come into force on the 1st October that requires landlords of domestic properties in the private sector to fit smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms into their properties. This new legislation will be for England only; landlords in Scotland are already required by law to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms under existing legislation. According to Martyn Walley, National Technical Manager at Aico this is the first time that legislation has been introduced to compel private sector landlords to retrospectively fit smoke and CO alarms. “Whilst the large majority of social housing providers install smoke alarms (and increasingly CO alarms) in their properties, take up of alarms by private landlords is considerably lower,” says Martyn. “With the private rental sector being an important and growing part of our housing market, this new legislation recognises the importance of these inexpensive life safety devices.” What’s more, the legislation has teeth. Enforced by Local Authorities, penalties of up to £5000 could be issued to landlords that breach their duty to comply with a remedial notice.

E

What are the requirements? A lot of the detail is yet to be confirmed, but so far we know that a working smoke alarm must be fitted on every storey of the property; and that a working CO alarm must be installed in rooms where there is a solid fuel appliance. They must be tested and in working order as each new tenant moves into the property. “Even though there hasn’t been a reference to the type and siting of alarms, we recommend that the British Standard BS 5839-6:2013 should be adhered to when fitting Smoke Alarms and BS EN 50292:2013 when fitting CO Alarms in residential/domestic premises in accordance with Building Regulations,” says Martyn.

What does this mean for you? For installers, this represents both a responsibility and a business opportunity. If you work with landlords in the private sector

www.psimagazine.co.uk

now is the time to start talking to them about fitting smoke and CO alarms in their properties and to advise them of this imminent change to legislation. Remember, fines of up to £5000 could be issued to landlords so it’s important they act now. It’s an opportunity to discuss the different options available to them and explain the benefits of fitting the right alarm in the right place. For example, battery removal from alarms is a big problem in rented properties, so installing mains powered alarms with tamperproof rechargeable battery back-up is a good solution to prevent this. According to the Government’s ‘Fire Statistics: Great Britain April 2013 to March 2014’ in dwelling fires where a smoke alarm was present, 39% of all battery-powered smoke alarms failed compared to just 20% of mains-powered alarms in 2013-14. Missing or flat batteries accounted for 24% of all failure in battery-powered smoke alarm. “False alarming is a big problem,” says Martyn, “especially if they use Ionisation alarms – often the default option due to their lower cost. Installers should suggest changing to optical or even a multi sensor where suitable, such as the landing, hallways and living room; and heat alarms in kitchens.” A multi-sensor combines optical and heat sensors in the one alarm unit and has built-in intelligence which enables it to not only monitor the signals from both sensors, but also to interpret them. This allows it to detect all different fire types, from fast flaming through to slow smouldering, and provide the best possible protection to residents. Yes, it’s pricier than a single sensor alarm but then you get double the sensors, plus in-built intelligence. “Interconnecting the alarms within a property should also be on the agenda,” advises Martyn Walley. “This will increase audibility and give the tenants the best chance of exiting the property safely. When one alarm goes off, all the other alarms on the system activate – and there’s little chance of the occupant sleeping through that noise! The use of wireless alarm interconnection should be suggested as it can be installed without additional redecorating costs and won’t cause disruption to tenants as you don’t need to rip up carpets/floorboards or add trunking.”

Legislation will come into force on the 1st October 2015 that requires landlords of domestic properties in the private sector to fit smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms into their properties

The real game changers very year around IFSEC time it seems that surveillance camera resolutions go up a notch. From the days of analogue we’ve seen a steady increase with many 4K and even 7K cameras launched over recent months. While the manufacturers of these units claim to be changing the face of security technology each time they introduce a higher resolution, the market and installers do not always see it the same way, rather an evolution than a revolution. The development of networks and the subsequent ability to connect and control various formats of technology is surely more of a revolution. Likewise the introduction of wireless systems, biometrics, analytics, cloud storage etc. So we thought it would be interesting to find out what manufacturers really thought were the game-changers when it comes to the security market and what their legacy would be going forwards. Will anyone mention camera resolutions?

E

Adam Stroud – Paxton Over the last few years there has been an increase in the adoption of IP based networks and network based peripherals. Full adoption throughout the industry is only a matter of time. The move towards IP networks has seen another trend emerge, that of converging systems and integration. Being an early adopter of IP into all of our mainstream products we have subsequently seen a large increase in the number of IT based companies now factoring access control into their portfolio. IP based network technology has helped facilitate this integration and has also further simplified the installation process, which sits very nicely with the Paxton ethos of simplicity. Through increased integration, comes increased system intelligence for the end user and installer alike. While many regard more and more features as only being a good thing, the associated complexity and cost can often lead to unsuitability for the mid-market. Making advanced security systems that are practical and relevant is essential to the development of the mid-market. As well as the requirement for products that are simple to use and secure, there is also the ever increasing demand for energy efficiency and central system management. This will give rise to a new breed of integrated functionality that works out of the box, 'building intelligence’.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Simon Cook Genetec The appeal for high-quality IP video and growing availability of ultra-high resolution cameras has certainly impacted the industry. However, our message is that pixels need perspective. For this reason much of the most important innovation must take place behind the scenes to manage the impact of such technologies on network infrastructure. This includes addressing concerns around the bandwidth required for capturing and moving these ultra-high-definition images supported by the growing needs for more storage. For example, Genetec Security Center 5.3 incorporates a new Hardware Acceleration feature which shifts the “heavy-lifting” of image decoding to a graphics processing unit (GPU) card. This creates a load-balancing shift to preserve smooth operation of existing CPU workstations, which are often the last components to be upgraded. It also gives operators the ability to view more camera image tiles at higher resolutions and framerates on 4K display monitors in the operations centre. Elsewhere, we are aggressively moving to offer our enterprise end-users a hybrid-cloud solution which adds flexibility and helps organisations economically scale to realise ongoing efficiencies. Over the next few years we expect to see rapid adoption of cloud-based physical security applications within the enterprise market as businesses increasingly come to view the cloud as a more cost-effective

Camera resolutions are continuing to rise, but such changes are not really revolutions. What innovations in the security industry have been the genuine groundbreakers?

Larry Lummis – Seagate While there have been a lot of exciting security innovations in the last year or so, I believe that the game changer innovation as we move forward is video analytics and business intelligence. While video analytics has been around in some form for a while, innovations in video coding and higher resolution cameras are creating an intelligence environment that goes well beyond traditional alarm zones or restricted areas. Video surveillance, which has historically been viewed as a loss prevention tool, has the opportunity to become a ROI increasing tool by enabling businesses to turn raw data into useful information that can maximise their productivity by allowing them to review existing data to make better business decisions. This capability will challenge the existing storage dynamic. Data integrity becomes even more important as end users recognise the value of their data and insist on surveillance capable storage for their surveillance systems. Retention times will continue to grow as organisations will want to analyze data over longer periods of time to recognise trends, opportunities, and anomalies and turn them into profitable actions. 25

(continued from previous page)

The technology market for video storage has seen a number of changes over recent years

alternative to purchasing new on-premises servers. This is particularly true for businesses such as sports stadiums and transportation authorities who, for legal reasons or liability assurance, must retain video footage for longer. The cloud helps these organisations to reduce costs, while adhering to strict retention archiving policies. To facilitate this trend we have developed Cloud Link, an embedded “enabling technology” that allows video and access control systems to seamlessly combine use of the cloud with onpremises equipment. We believe the enterprise market will respond positively to this option of putting as much or as little into the cloud as they like.

Clym Brown – Texecom

“I see the security market evolving to provide an increased level of end-user interaction through smart, connected homes” 26

The world has become increasingly connected, which is having a profound effect on how end-users expect to interact, control and monitor their home security. Security alarm system manufacturers have been adding home monitoring and ‘smart-home’ functionality into their systems over the past few years, but with the proliferation of portable smart devices and the continual hype surrounding the ‘internet of things’, modern security systems will need to increase the level of connected home features to keep pace with customer demand. The challenge for security alarm system manufacturers is balancing the need to provide new solutions quickly to satisfy end-user requirements, whilst also ensuring that the new connected home solutions are robust and secure. Already users rely on smart devices to securely store and share their most private and sensitive information; ranging from personal details, photos and contacts through to location services and future calendar events. With mobile banking and recent advances in mobile payments, users expect devices to be secure and service providers to be competent at securing and protecting their data. It should go without saying that services offered by security alarm professionals will exceed these requirements. Users have an inherent ‘trust’ and it is vital that interaction with professional security equipment lives up to these expectations. Data security, encryption, immunity from hacking; these are all specialist areas that require specialist knowledge, which reside outside the traditional electronic security

manufacturers skill set. Providing internet-enabled devices and services is possible without investing in high security protocols, which can be tempting for some when targeting a first-to-market competitive advantage. Cloud-based services in particular are relatively easy to offer if security and data protection are not the core concerns. However for professional security services, integrity is an imperative, and high quality professional providers should invest heavily in ensuring the highest levels of data protection. I see the security market evolving to provide an increased level of end-user interaction through smart, connected homes. Securing electronic data, as well as the physical premises, will be the greatest challenge.

Joe Grillo – Vanderbilt International

I was at ISC West exhibition in Las Vegas recently and I did not see anything gamechanging in terms of innovation. This leads me to wonder whether we are in an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, period in terms of product innovation. So while new technologies are being introduced few, if any, suggest they can ‘change the game’ in the way that the arrival of IP did, for example. This may simply be an indication that we are now in a mature market. In which case I can see two trends emerging. It is possible that the market evolves to focus on how the information captured by CCTV, access control and detection products is actually used. Another trend is the development of products that are built around specific user requirements, and which treat the intended use as the primary design consideration. To address the first point, consider that CCTV is following consumer technology trends such as the move towards HD, then 4K, and soon, 7K. Robust coding standards reduce bandwidth overhead and the user can then take advantage of the better resolution of these cameras. Combined with ONVIF profiles and advances in DSP, these advances deliver high quality information to the end user’s screen. The focus then shifts to what can be done with the data. Intelligent and responsive video analytics becomes feasible, and the ‘holy grail’ of identifying single individuals in a crowd of people becomes a more realistic proposition, for example. This however requires manufacturers, installers and specifiers that truly understand integration and have the expertise to design and build systems that work out of the box. To my second point, product innovations

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT panel jun15_PSI_mar15 26/05/2015 16:39 Page 3

continue to be brought to market but many are enhancements that make installation and specification easier and align the product better with its intended use. For example, our flat mirror technology allows installers to fit detectors flush with walls, flattering rather than frustrating architects’ design criteria. More broadly, this technology is both advanced and affordable, which means that a lot more emphasis can be placed on aesthetics. We are certainly seeing demands from customers for products that both look good - and work well. The next few years could be very exciting!

Atul Rajput – Axis Communications

A key driver this year has been that continual improvements over the last decade – the unquenchable thirst for superior image quality, light sensitivity, more powerful analytics and so on – have reached a tipping point in terms of balancing the resources necessary to support them. As data output from cameras rapidly increases, we’re beginning to run into issues with bandwidth and storage requirements, so there’s a real imperative for the industry to respond by developing more effective compression methods. The impetus is on surveillance manufacturers to balance the upsurge in resolution with improvements to H.264 compression algorithms to make sure network bandwidth and storage costs do not spiral out of control. A combined effort of working on noise reduction methods and bit rate reduction should run in parallel with investigation into new video codecs to get the best results. In March this year, we launched ’Zipstream’, which is designed to do just that. It works by identifying and then reducing or removing redundant data in a scene, while retaining key areas of interest – forensic details like faces, tattoos or number plates – so efficient compression and significant reduction in file size can be achieved with little or no adverse effect on the visual quality of the resultant video footage. We’ve found it to be a radically more efficient H.264 implementation – typically lowering bandwidth and storage requirements with up to 50%. Beyond improvements in current H.264 compression, over the next few years we expect the industry to fully embrace H.265 technology, which is rapidly gaining interest in other sectors – such as broadcast. We expect that H.264 and H.265 will co-exist within the industry for the foreseeable future. However, it’s not something that will stay the preserve of high end, high resolution cameras forever.

Kiran Pillai – Bosch

Typically, higher MP cameras will have very low frame rates. This longer time interval could reduce compression efficiency of using temporal redundancy and result in very high data and storage requirements. A typical large city surveillance using 1080p HD technology could have thousands of 1080p cameras (2MP) generating approximately 80Gbit/s. These will require 52,000 500GB hard discs for 30 days recording. With 4K or Ultra HD cameras, the storage requirement doubles. More efficient compression techniques will not offset higher storage requirements and increasing MP count will increase total cost. Total cost of ownership remains the key. Bosch has developed technology with a focus on reducing storage costs and network strain without compromising video quality. Quiet scenes with little or no movement require a lower bitrate. By intelligently distinguishing between noise and motion, Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (IDNR) reduces bitrate without compromising video quality. Fluctuations in backlight and front light can ruin images. Intelligent Auto Exposure (IAE) automatically adjusts the exposure of the camera offering superb front light compensation and incredible backlight compensation by automatically adapting to changing light conditions providing the perfect exposure every time. In video surveillance, moving objects are usually the most significant objects of interest. Intelligent Tracking automatically tracks moving objects based on predefined alarm rules or a simple click. After only 20 minutes you can miss 90% of the activity on a screen. Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA) assists by alerting you when predefined alarms are triggered. By smartly combining up to 8 IVA rules, complex tasks are made easy and false alarms are reduced to a minimum. IVA also adds sense and structure to your video by adding metadata. Limited bandwidth makes it impossible to stream HD video on mobile devices. Dynamic Transcoding delivers both smooth live video streaming and instant access to HD images when needed, regardless of available bandwidth giving the user access to HD images anytime, anywhere. Large video data volumes are hard to process and difficult to manage. Video Recording Manager (VRM) enables the camera to stream relevant video data directly to the available storage devices without the use of network servers. This saves costs, server maintenance, and eliminates a possible single point of failure thus increasing reliability.

As data output from cameras rapidly increases, we’re beginning to run into issues with bandwidth and storage requirements, so there’s a real imperative for the industry to respond by developing more effective compression methods

TRAINING

Knowledge is the key Training is the key to staying on top of trends and boosting business s we have discussed in previous editions of PSi, diversifying skills will help installers to be successful in the future especially in the light of the influx of IP-savvy IT integrators moving into the security market along with a constant stream of new technology. Integration is the watchword of the modern security industry so the ability to get your head around IP and all of the periphery that goes with it (such as routers, addresses, cloud storage etc) is essential to keep your business moving forward in the 21st century. How you do this depends on what it is you really need to pick up from a course and how much time you have to spend on it. Of course while you might consider that a day or two training every now and then is a loss of man hours on a contract, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term. One way to pick up new skills is to attend a training course run by a manufacturer or systems provider, however while they are educational they can sometimes be a bit product oriented and sales driven (not to say that all manufacturers’ courses are product promotions, just that they can be). Often these courses can be listed as “free to attend” because the manufacturer hopes to sell equipment to pay for the time and expense of running the course. After all, if you can’t fit it, the vendors won’t sell it. But, this sales pitch style of ‘training’ does appear to be on the way out as companies now understand that installers need to achieve a certain ROI on their time and a conveyor belt of product information is not going to work for either party. A good training option is to approach an approved learning provider who will be product agnostic and therefore not be pushing any particular technology in your direction in an attempt to sell the systems they are training you on. It is also possible via such an institution to gain a BTEC qualification through attendance and completion of the training. There are a number of companies offering such training facilities and, speaking from first-hand experience, they do it very well indeed. Not only are they providing you with bespoke courses, they are often run by exinstallers and give you the chance to meet your peers and learn from them too. Of course in theory all of this sounds great, but in practice going “back to school” can be quite daunting, but it is worth remembering that opportunities such as training days are only

A

beneficial if you make sure you get out of it what you need to. In the same way that you walk around trade shows and see people on stands reading the paper, looking at their phones or ignoring visitors trying to get eye contact, there’s not point saying the show didn’t work for you if you don’t work at the show – and it’s the same for training. There are a number of steps you can take to get the most from a training course, so if it’s been a while since you last went along to a classroom to try and learn something new Chris Atkin of Total Comms Training reveals here the five things you should do to get the most from training courses.

It’s not a day out Don’t regard a training course as ‘just’ an attendance event - take a holistic approach and use the session as a portal to open your mind to other possibilities. After the training, be proactive and use resources you can access online, as well as textbooks, to expand on the key points from the day, allowing you to gain further insight. Studies suggest that after twenty minutes or so people tend to turn off a little bit if they are only listening to speech. By reinforcing the listening you do during the training session with a further layer of training created through private study, you will achieve much more. You only get as much out as you put in yourself.

Talk, ask, listen Engage with the trainer during the day - the trainer is there to help you expand your knowledge base using intelligent questioning. Most trainers will be very keen to help you understand the course materials better. Not to mention, they will be pleased if you ask relevant questions outside the course materials. And don’t worry if you don’t know what the questions are until you attend the event. If you pick up one new and valuable piece of information that benefits your business, the investment in training will be worth it. “For me there are three ways of breaking down your questions,” says Chris. “There are the ‘must-knows’, which will help you pass a critical examination. Then there is an area which we might call the ‘should-knows’,

While you might consider that a day or two training every now and then is a loss of man hours on a contract, the longterm benefits far outweigh the shortterm

TRAINING

(from previous page)

Build relationships Remember you are in a network. “At the end of a training event there is always a feeling of sadness for me, as a trainer, because you have developed a relationship with the individuals you are helping,” reveals Chris. “We all understand intuitively that people learn better in a group, so it makes sense to take advantage of the crowd. One of the best ways of doing this is to follow up via LinkedIn and build on those relationships in that way. And don’t forget to include your trainer in that group – we learn a lot from our delegates as well!”

Reflect and revise If you pick up one new and valuable piece of information that benefits your business, the investment in training will be worth it

that help you increase on key areas of knowledge. Finally, there are ‘could-knows’, which are wider issues that could be expanded upon through further learning. Thinking about it in this way will help you prioritise your questions.”

Don’t be shy Bear in mind you are in a safe environment - when you go to a training session you are in a place where no-one is going to embarrass or criticise. Frustrated high school student you. In a sense, you have ownership of the event – the trainer is there to assist, help and guide you. In one respect, this is the fundamental message of City & Guilds. But if you do feel shy or nervous, a good technique is to write the question down and approach the trainer during the break. This can often help create a useful post-break session from which the entire group will benefit. “Think about what you are learning: It might sound obvious, but the way you address information in your own mind is the key to understanding,” says Chris. “You may have heard people say they can’t remember a word of their Olevel or GCSE French. That’s often because the second they left the examination, they stopped thinking about the subject.

Reflect on the training long after the event: It pays to return to the subject of the training session several weeks after you have completed it to revise the material and ensure your learning is fully embedded. “It also pays to reinforce those skills every few years, which may mean re-sitting a qualification or attending an update session,” say Chris. “My own business has many clients who come back time-after-time for further training to build on their existing skills. Just like filling up your car it doesn’t have to be a chore and it can provide you with the mental fuel you need for the journey ahead.” It can be daunting to walk into a room with people you don’t know to have to sit down and learn new things – especially for the ‘older’ installer, but many courses have been running for some time and have been specifically compiled to meet the needs of those in attendance. There is no need to be concerned about being left behind or not understanding terminology. Furthermore there are other options with shorter courses and online training also available on a range of security subjects. Technology will never stop developing and new systems and ways of communicating and connecting are evolving all of the time. Don’t be left behind!

PROMOTION

Tavcom to take to the stage again at IFSEC Training Theatre will be hosting during the three days of the show.”

Jargon free training sessions

Tavcom has announced the confirmed line-up of speakers who will be sharing their knowledge and expertise at the Tavcom Training Theatre during this year’s IFSEC International exhibition. s in previous years, the diversity of the subject matter covered by the free to attend lectures in the Tavcom Training Theatre which is being sponsored by D-Link, will mean that there is something for everyone involved within the electronic security supply chain, including installers, systems designers, specifiers, end-users and technical support personnel. “This is the eighth successive year that the organisers of IFSEC have entrusted Tavcom to host the Training Theatre and needless to say, we are of course delighted to yet again have the opportunity to support UBM in their endeavours to ensure that visitors gain maximum benefit from attending the Mike Tennent exhibition,” said Mike Tennent of Tavcom Training. “Security professionals are always keen to learn about new technologies, innovations, solutions and standards and we are confident, as has been the case at previous IFSEC’s, that it will be ‘standing room only’ at many, if not at all of the educational sessions that Tavcom

Tavcom is ideally placed to provide IFSEC visitors with an objective overview of the important issues impacting on the electronic security world. The industry’s leading provider of classroom and e-learning online security systems training courses has put together a balanced programme of jargon free training sessions which they say will entertain, as well as educate and inform all those who attend. Sourced from across the security industry, the hand picked list of expert speakers will include: •Peter Mason, the lead IP tutor for Tavcom Training, who will offer a thought provoking expert opinion on the key challenges presented by the growing demand for IP network based video surveillance solutions. • Richard Beckley, who develops and delivers training within the Central Forensic Image Team at New Scotland Yard. Richard will offer guidance on how to ensure that video evidence is fit for purpose and can help lead to a successful prosecution. • Jon Laws, a Senior Tutor for Tavcom Training and an international renowned speaker, who will share his expert knowledge on the system planning and design process needed to ensure that a video surveillance system is able to capture and record evidence grade images. • John Ballantyne, Chairman of the ONVIF Market Demand Working Group, who will provide an insight as to how businesses at every level of the supply chain, from those who specify and install, to equipment manufacturers and software developers, can realise great benefit by adopting ONVIF. • John Mearman, a expert on Drone technology, will present a compelling session on this business opportunity for the surveillance industry. • Ken Livingstone, whose presentation on ESRM (Enterprise Security Risk Management) is a must for any security professional who is looking to keep one step ahead of the criminal fraternity and terrorists. • Mike Gillespie, an expert on the threat to organisational information assets, who will provide a dynamic, but simple to understand overview of cyber vulnerabilities in business environments. The Tavcom Training Theatre will be on stand B1200 at IFSEC International at ExCeL London on 16-18 June

together raising standards

Meet the installer This month we talk to Anthony King of Kings Security Systems who needs a specific security system to help at home! Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? Our main distributor is Honeywell ADi, with whom we have a very strategic partnership, we have clients with high expectations and so our supply chain needs to be able to support us to deliver beyond those expectations.

Name: Anthony King Job title: Managing Director Time in security/fire: Let’s just say since I was 16 when I started, how long ago that was makes me feel old! Company name: Kings Security Systems Location: Bradford, West Yorkshire Areas of expertise: Dangerous thing to consider yourself an expert, there is always something to learn and we have a lot to learn to take our industry forward into the future Accreditations: CSMP (Certified Security Management Professional)

34

Is third party accreditation beneficial to your company? Honest answer, yes and no. For me accreditation doesn’t go far enough to really ensure there is a clear distinction amongst installers to give customers the real opportunity to choose and select the right business. I believe ISO27001 (which we have held for three years) and ISO22301 which we will have this year, are a must for our industry and company’s who go beyond the 3rd party accreditation criteria should be recognised. I believe if we want to professionalise our industry we need to qualify it, no Grandfather rights! What would be a typical project for you? Our speciality is retail and the multiple sites clients, our projects can range from a high end coffee shop, to a High St clothes retailer, a convenience store, right through to a supermarket. Most of our projects are two to three weeks. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? We have a huge skills gap and forgive me for saying, but anyone that doesn’t realise that isn’t pushing their business into the new technology and solutions that our industry needs to be in. When sailing boats were at their height, I’m sure many said there was no shortage of able bodied seamen, but when engines came along, there was a huge shortage of engineers. I believe our industry is at that turning point. We recruit apprentices for the future that want to become qualified and want to learn the technology for the future; the most important tool is their laptop, we have 70+ in the business right now.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Probably the same as everyone else: “how do we reduce costs and still get a greater return on our security budget with better results” and our answer is always the same, we need to do it different! What is the security industry’s biggest myth? I think the biggest myth is that we think we are qualified because we are accredited and that we are prepared for the future, I learnt so much when I did my CSMP course and putting my business through ISO27001 and ISO22301 have been huge challenges for all the right reasons. What would make your job easier? The more brilliant and qualified people you surround yourself with, the easier your job gets every day. I already have loads of amazing staff but we add to the team all the time, always great when they are top of their game but not from our industry, it brings fresh ideas and a new dynamic. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security product? That’s easy, an early warning system that tells me if my wife has had a good day with our five boys or a bad day, that way I know if I should stay at work a bit longer! Will England ever win the football World Cup again? I believe in miracles!! And I also believe in my country, of course we can win the World Cup, it’s got to happen again in my lifetime. For now let’s get behind our rugby lads this autumn for the World Cup. C’mon England - Heave!!! If you won £25,000 what do you think you would you do with it? I’m suppose to name a charity here aren’t I? I promise we take charity very seriously and 23 of us from Kings are doing 127.5 mile bike ride next weekend to raise money for a local children’s hospice called St Martin’s, but truthfully I would split it and put some away to help my five boys to go to University or just help them follow their dreams, one wants to be a Barrister, could be handy. Still working on the others the youngest is only 7 weeks old!

Comelit

Comelit has added to its access control range for apartment blocks and residential complexes with the ‘Mini’ video door entry phone, which the company will be demonstrating at this year’s IFSEC. The ‘Mini’ is an enhanced version of Comelit’s entry-level solution, which maximises security while remaining unobtrusive. The design enhances user convenience of the entry phone and display screen while also minimising delays for legitimate visitors and protecting against unwanted callers and would-be intruders. The 4.3” 16:9 black and white or colour screen offers brightness and contrast control that makes the unit clearly readable for users, even in unusual ambient light conditions. The aesthetic appeal of the ‘Mini’ can be optimised with ringtone and melody customisation, and compact dimensions make the units discreet. Installers will appreciate that Comelit’s ‘Simplebus Top’ system uses analogue 2-wire technology. This allows external and internal units to be up to 1,200 metres apart but still operate from the same riser line. At large apartment complexes with considerable distances between a building’s entrance panel and the central concierge, a 2-wire system with non-polarised cables makes scalable connectivity (using several building risers if necessary) a simple matter. IFSEC Stand G900

Mobotix

Mobotix will be showcasing its new i25 camera line which offers a discreet hemispheric camera delivering a complete, high-resolution panoramic image solution for indoor applications at less than €400. As the smallest complete Mobotix system, the PoE-powered unit is quickly installed via an in-wall socket using just two screws. Standard features include a light-sensitive 5-MP day or night sensor, SD memory card, microphone and the latest camera software including MxActivitySensor and MxAnalytics. Optional functions such as a speaker, radar sensor, IO and MxBus connections as well as a vandalism- proof protective housing can be retrofitted. IFSEC Stand G500

SSAIB

For 2015 SSAIB’s staff at IFSEC will be led by new Chief Executive Alex Carmichael, who took over the reins from Geoff Tate in March. Throughout IFSEC, Alex and his team will be available to answer queries and discuss specific issues that concern registered firms. They’ll also be on-hand to explain the benefits of SSAIB’s accreditation services. These include its latest UKAS accreditation against British Standard 102000 for Investigative Services, gained recently following SSAIB’s work on pilot assessments with a number of companies working in this field. Meanwhile, during IFSEC 2015, SSAIB will also be supporting the Engineers of Tomorrow challenge, the UK security skills competition for young engineers and apprentices, offering them an industry-wide opportunity to publicly demonstrate their achievements. Accurate ANPR without the tricky set-up

Connections Hello again, The Fire and Security Association (FSA) of which I was the founding Chairman, is calling on the new Conservative Government to engage with the organisation on three key issues affecting fire and security companies: prompt payment, boosting technical skills and cost-effective business licensing. As a Trade Association, the FSA is dedicated to companies who design, install and commission, maintain and monitor electronic fire, emergency and security systems. As a specialist group of the Electrical Contractors’ Association and working in partnership with SELECT, the Scottish electro-technical Trade Association, the FSA is uniquely positioned to improve industry standards and both enhance and develop members’ businesses. The FSA and the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) are two organisations which I am heavily involved in, they both reflect my own businesses commitment to upholding Standards and improving the working environment for fire and security companies in the UK. It’s that commitment that our customers feel ebbing through the veins of SMS and NMS that makes us stand out from our competitors and this is conveyed through our new website www.smon.co.uk By serving the industry on Trade Association, UKAS certification body and British Standard Institute committees it enables us to influence what our industry should look like and to educate our customers on developments, both technically and on where the fire and security marketplace is going in the future.

IDIS and 4Sight Imaging have announced the integration of DirectIP with Veracity, an intuitive Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software engine. Reportedly ten times more accurate in independent comparative testing, the IDIS and 4Sight solution combines image analysis technologies with DirectIP HD cameras, leveraging system architectures and advances in solid state lighting to allow a wide, multi-lane field of view that is listed as accurate across a range of weather, lighting and plate conditions. The solution eliminates the challenges traditionally associated with ANPR systems, by removing complicated set up, configuration and constant maintenance and system adjustments made possible through both companies’ patented plug-and-play technology. The result translates to low system configuration and simple, fast deployment that delivers benefits in terms of affordability and a continued low cost of ownership. Brook Jackson, Managing Director at 4Sight Imaging, added, “The complexities previously associated with plate recognition have until now restricted installers and system integrators from maximising opportunities from ANPR, having eliminated these the Veracity solution allows our partners to grow, protects their margins and at the same time ensures end user satisfaction. One major car parking organisation in the United Kingdom has already seen significant return on investment through improved accuracy since rolling out across their national estate.” www.4sightimaging.com

www.psimagazine.co.uk

We also drive innovation into our customers businesses allowing them to work smarter and to make time and efficiency savings by using our MASweb and MASmobile software and Apps. You can never say that SMS or NMS do not keep you informed of what’s going on with your estate of remote signalling systems, as our daily reports and weekly health check reports keep you updated on all of your systems activity. On top of smart working practices our customers enjoy unrivalled levels of service as well as competitive prices and very high service levels from our two “high integrity certificated” – no interruption to service, NSI Gold ARC’s and RVRC’s. Do have a look around our new website to see what makes us different and compare our services against your existing ARC/RVRC suppliers’ website. Then pick up the phone, give us call for a no obligation review of your signalling estate and see how we can put more money on your bottom line and give you better margins. At the same time why not use some of those savings? Consider joining the FSA where there are like minded fire and security companies trading labour and providing specialist services (especially design, commission and handover of BAFE SP203 systems) to electrical contractors who are not specialists, it’s a great club to belong to! Bye for now

Self-learning analytics now standard in HD Pro cameras Avigilon has announced the addition of its self-learning video analytics technology to its HD Pro camera series, available in 4K (8 megapixel) and 5K (16 MP) resolutions. The self-learning video analytics instantly detects and learns the monitored scene upon installation, adapting to changes and movement patterns without complex manual calibration. “Video analytics is decreasing the cost model for monitoring by increasing the productivity of security personnel. The combination of our selflearning analytics technology with our HD Pro series can be used to proactively mitigate the impact of incidents in progress, reducing damage and loss,” said Dr. Mahesh Saptharishi, Avigilon’s Chief Technology Officer. Selflearning video analytics solutions provide a high degree of accuracy in object detection and classification thanks to numerous patented technologies, including video pattern detection and teach-by-example technology. The solution identifies people, vehicles or other important moving objects while ignoring insignificant items in a scene, enabling the selflearning video analytics to automatically adjust to changing scene conditions. The system’s performance therefore continually improves over time. In addition, with teach-by-example technology, users have the ability to provide feedback about the accuracy of alarms. This helps further refine the device’s performance and capabilities, which results in increased accuracy in detection, a lower rate of false alarms and a simplified user experience. www.avigilon.com

Upselling sells Welcome to the latest edition of PSiX magazine, taking a closer look at connecting security and technology for modern life ast month at the ISC West event in Las Vegas it was obvious that security is entering a new phase in its evolution with the launch of many new products aimed at the domestic market and appealing to the types of people who queue up for days to buy the latest smartphone on its release. Many of these new systems will not trouble the professional security system in terms of performance but they will certainly take some market share from the lower end of business. On a positive note it will help bring security into the fold and bring a new generation into the mindset of protecting their homes, possessions and family. After a time using the smartphone reliant tech it is likely that some form of upscaling will be required. For you that means upselling and probably getting them onto a more professional networked system - often something that installers aren’t too keen on. Hopefully there will be some more hints and tips in this edition of PSiX to help you to get networking and winning business. Andy Clutton – Editor PSi, PSiX

FIRE SAFETY

Fire gets smarter The industry is catching up with the interconnected world says Keith Minster of Drax Technology

It’s usually down to the honesty of the operative or, at best, a bar-code label which is scanned to prove that they visited the device, but not that they triggered it. With some control panels it’s possible to download the event log onto a laptop, providing some proof, but this needs manipulation before it can be sent to the customer. To make this worse, the information presented differs from one manufacturer’s equipment to another, making it difficult for the unskilled end-user to understand. This is worrying; we might be living in the age of connectivity, but we’re also living through a time when compliance and transparency underpin all we do. Thankfully, smarter tools are emerging onto the market to provide the missing piece of the jigsaw. These can be used by service and maintenance organisations, facilities and estates managers and end-user organisations to prove which devices have been checked during weekly testing and quarterly maintenance visits.

The benefits

Even if fire alarm systems aren’t connected to the internet, hand-held devices carried by the engineer can be temporarily connected

e’re in the middle of a “smart revolution”. Our phones, TVs and even our central heating systems are all interconnected and extremely clever these days. Take a relatively new car for a service and, in many cases, the mechanic, can diagnose what’s wrong with it just by plugging a fob into a laptop and not even looking under the bonnet. Wear a smart wristband while out running and you can find out more about your body then you probably ever wished to know. In fact by some estimates, there could be 50 billion interconnected devices by 2020. So, it’s good to know that this particular revolution hasn’t by-passed the fire industry.

W

Testing times Anyone involved in fire alarm service and maintenance probably already has software to schedule maintenance, track engineers and produce reports and invoices. But frustratingly, this never seems to cover the critical part; information on which fire alarm devices have been tested, whether or not they have been tested, or any proof of testing.

Perhaps the real value of these tools lies in the extensive data produced in a consistent format to make it highly usable to help improve productivity, reduce costs, ensure compliance with the RR (FSO) and improve the green credentials of all the organisations involved. If fire alarm systems are permanently connected, a significant amount of data can be collected in real-time. This is valuable to all those involved; the end-user, their facilities management company and the service and maintenance firm to ensure faults are dealt with immediately. It also helps the engineer to know the parts and equipment to take to the call to ensure problems are fixed first time. Automatically-generated notifications can reduce the time to respond still further. Even if fire alarm systems aren’t connected to the internet, hand-held devices carried by the engineer can be temporarily connected to the fire alarm control panel, recording activities as they carry out the maintenance visit. These can then be downloaded when there’s a suitable internet connection later in the day. For most fire alarm service and maintenance companies view their service contracts as their ‘bread and butter’. But like all successful businesses today it’s imperative to invest in smart technology in order to remain competitive – so the question is, why should the fire industry be any different?

The rise of ULE

What do you know about ULE? Here we talk to the ULE Alliance about the Ultra Low Energy standard and what it means for installers any smart home solutions currently available are either difficult to install, not particularly secure, expensive or not compatible with devices from other manufacturers. To make life easier for the users as well as for the installers – and thereby boosting their sales -, vendors start turning to the new Ultra Low Energy standard (ULE). According to the ULE Alliance, which has just started a certification programme for ULE-based products, a wide range of solutions from motion detectors to smoke alarms to security cameras are about to be launched. Some companies like Panasonic, Gigaset, AVM, Crow or VTech already offer ULE-based products such as door phones, window locks, motion and glass break detectors, smoke alarms and security cameras. However, judging by the huge interest ULE attracted at the global consumer technology tradeshow CES in Las

M

Vegas, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The nonprofit organisation ULE Alliance has just launched a certification programme for products that use the Ultra Low Energy standard, and RenÊ Kohlmann, chairman of the ULE Alliance, predicts that many more companies will soon release their products. These devices can then be easily combined with other smart home solutions like the heating system and air conditioning.

Certification programme ensures interoperability of devices across manufacturers The certification programme assures carriers,

With distances of up to 50 metres within buildings and up to 300 metres outdoors, ULE also has a superior range compared to other wireless standards like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave and ZigBee

CONNECTIVITY

Today’s consumers who are used to connect their Smart TV or tablet with other consumer electronics will certainly appreciate the fact that they soon might be able to control their entire homes via a single network retailers, and end users that the products conform to a set of standards. It also ensures the interoperability of devices across manufacturers around the world – one of the key features of ULE. Depending on the device, it may only take the push of a button to install and combine ULEenabled products from different manufacturers. The new wireless standard is based on DECT frequencies which previously had been used solely for cordless telephones. As ULE uses the protected frequency band from 1,890 to 1,900 MHz, which is exclusively reserved for DECT, interferences with other products – such as all kind of Wi-Fi devices or even microwaves – can be ruled out. With distances of up to 50 metres within buildings and up to 300 metres outdoors, ULE also has a superior range compared to other wireless standards like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave and ZigBee. In less than 50 milliseconds, the transport layer of ULE can setup a connection to the actuator, send a control signal and cut the connection again. The short latency ensures realtime communication between ULE products and a DECT base station.

ULE safest standard for smart homes ULE uses AES-CCM for encryption and packet authentication (based on AES 128). The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for electronic data has been established by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. All communication is encrypted using AES-CCM and there is no mode or option to switch off the encryption like in other technologies. As a result, experts consider ULE as the safest standard for the smart home. ULE – as the name already suggests – is more energy efficient than regular DECT. Batterypowered devices can be operated up to ten years on the same set of batteries. Just like DECT, ULE allows the transmission of data as well as of speech. The latter is particularly useful for manufacturers who are working on solutions which allow users to control their smart home with their voice. As hundreds of actuators and sensors can be combined to one network with

ULE, being able to control the system with commands might come in handy.

Existing gateways can be upgraded with simple software update Another advantage of the new standard is that users do not necessarily need a new gateway to setup a network. Often, the existing DECT gateway such as Gigaset devices and the FRITZ!Box routers from AVM can be upgraded to ULE via a simple software update. Today’s consumers who are used to connect their Smart TV or tablet with other consumer electronics will certainly appreciate the fact that they soon might be able to control their entire homes via a single network. So far, most solutions were either difficult to install, expensive or restricted to one manufacturer. Judging by its key features, ULE certainly has the potential to challenge existing standards.

ULE and home security Home Security can be considered as the ability to monitor home conditions using electronic devices and raise an alarm should a situation which causes concern occurs. Technologies already using ULE include: • Door Phone; allows home use to visually inspect who is at the door • Door / Window Locks; provides availability of sensors on door and windows, which when activated, will cause an alarm indication if opened unexpectedly • Motion Detector; provides sensors, which when activated, will cause an alarm when motion is detected • Glass Break Detector; provides sensors, which when activated, will cause an alarm when glass is broken unexpectedly • Smoke / Fire Alert; provides sensors, which indicate the presence of smoke or fire and cause an external alarm • Baby Monitors; provides visual display of an infant, to another location in the house, or an external location • Security Camera; provides a visual indication of a location in the house, either to another part of the premises or an external surveillance service

Burnley FC scores with new system xis Communications and partner Thorne Access & Security have helped Burnley Football Club to upgrade its in-ground security systems, transitioning it from an analogue configuration to hybrid IP and CCTV HDTV set up. Home stadium, Turf Moor, has a capacity of 21,500 and enjoys average gates of over 19,000, with up to 4,000 of these being allocated to away supporters on match days. With the team’s promotion to the Barclays Premier League, a multi-million pound facilities and IT upgrade was specified, which included funds for the upgrade of the analogue-based CCTV system. Following a tender process the contract for installation and management of the new video surveillance system was handed to Axis partner, Thorne Access & Security in early July 2014. Thorne Access & Security specified a hybrid IP and CCTV system using Axis network cameras and Mirasys hybrid NVR system. The new in-ground safety system focused on tightening security in two core areas – at the entry turnstiles and inside the ‘bowl’ of the stadium itself. A combination of Q6045-E PTZ Dome Cameras and Q1765-LE Network Cameras were deployed inside the stadium bowl, while 14 legacy analogue cameras were retained to cover concourses in the new hybrid CCTV and IP video system. A total of 64 new cameras were installed covering the stadium, turnstiles, and concourses outside the bowl and behind the East Stand. The new system also provided total coverage of all 40 turnstiles through which thousands of fans pass through on match days. Atul Rajput, regional director, northern Europe at Axis Communications said: “This installation has been a fantastic project for Axis and a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate what our technology is capable of in potentially risky, public environments. Axis cameras were chosen for this installation because of their ability to deliver razor-sharp images using 18x optical zoom capability. This is very important when you are siting cameras at opposite ends of a pitch over 120 metres away! Even at those distances, our cameras can provide evidential quality images to positively identify individuals and help the club’s ground safety team spot issues before they escalate.” The use of pyrotechnics inside football club stadia has been a dangerous new trend in UK grounds over the last twelve months. The new cameras enable operators to spot unusual behaviours, such as looking down to light a firework or smoke bomb and enables the grounds safety team to clearly identify who ignited it. The same is true of people throwing objects onto the pitch, towards players or linesmen.

Openreach deploys new underground infrastructure protection technology SmartWater Technology has unveiled a system to help minimise the theft of critical underground infrastructure. SEAL has been developed to restrict access to underground networks and other infrastructure that are the target of metal thieves. SEAL consists of two key components - an extendable steel brace, which prevents intrusion, and a bespoke, mouldable bag which is customised to fit almost any shape or size required. The bag is fitted with forensically coded SmartWater SmartGel, which is uniquely registered to the location of the device’s deployment. Openreach, a BT Group Business, has become the first organisation in the UK to deploy SEAL, after initially approaching SmartWater about developing a product to combat underground infrastructure theft. Devices are now in use at high-risk locations, none of which have been attacked since their installation. Bernie Auguste, General Manager of Security Services for Openreach, said: “Ensuring that our customers do not suffer the loss of service is of paramount importance to us, and SEAL is another tool to help us achieve this. A key benefit of SEAL for Openreach is the rapid deployment capability. We provide it at key points in our infrastructure, where we have an emerging or potential threat. Our aim is to significantly reduce the likelihood of a criminal attack and SEAL will help us until a longer term security solution can be actioned.” Should a manhole cover be removed illegally, SEAL will protect the site from opportunistic thieves looking to target underground cabling and infrastructure. It can also act as a temporary health and safety measure to reduce risk of injury to the public whilst a replacement manhole cover is sourced. In the event of a criminal attack on SEAL, the mouldable bag will rupture, covering tools, clothes and hands in SmartGel. Any traces of the gel will glow brightly under UV light, providing a forensic link between the criminal and the crime scene. The gel will remain on skin and hair for many weeks and is virtually impossible to remove from clothing, footwear and tools.

Fibre optic backbone for cruise terminal

AMG has announced that it has completed the supply of the transmission solution for a security and surveillance project for the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong. Designated as the ‘Design, Supply, Delivery, Install, Testing, Commissioning, Warranty and Maintenance of interconnected Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, for Hong Kong’s Customs & Excise Department (C&ED,) Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF), Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) and Tourist Commission (TC)’ the solution was designed and implemented by Hong Kong based UniVision Engineering. According to UniVision’s Project Manager Tony Man, “We decided to use fibre optics for the backbone, as this allows for smooth transmission signals and the ability to send videos as well as data signals from the cameras for control of PTZ to the control room. We decided to work with AMG Systems in the UK for the transmission solution, and deployed AMG’s 3700 product series for ring topology which has been designed to provide for low cost, multi-channel drop and insert video collection, together with associated Ethernet and low speed data and audio signals. Although initially, the drop and insert feature was not implemented, this facility is available for future expansion.” In total, the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal CCTV solution has 620 cameras. Of those, 260 comprise the designated TC solution. The 620 cameras are split into 220 IP PTZ cameras, 240 analogue PTZ cameras and 158 fixed, as well as two 360 degree cameras, with panoramic views. The solution has intentionally been designed with the possibility for expansion, and this is significant, as there are plans for further berth extension to be completed by 2018.

Amthal Fire & Security makes the grade at St Albans school

Access control upgrade for SoHostel in West End SoHostel, offering affordable accommodation in the heart of London’s West End, is benefiting from a Salto access control solution designed and installed by Delta Security to further enhance security and provide a user-friendly experience. Following a refurbishment that saw SoHostel re-open in November 2014 with contemporary and fun decor and facilities, Stuart Ball, General Manager for One Housing, the organisation that owns and manages SoHostel, was looking for an access control system that could efficiently and securely manage an increasing number of guests: “SoHostel can be very busy at all times of the day and night,” he says, “so we needed a system that would reliably give access to guests (and only guests), and was fast and accurate for our employees to programme on check in.” The new system works by giving each guest a key card that is programmed with their details and the relevant room. Stuart says it is working well: “The locks installed are very robust, and guests are able to gain access without any problems,” he continues. “The reliability of the system provides our employees with more time to concentrate on the guest experience, and crucially, we are able to track comings and goings, enhancing the security of the whole site.” Because the system is fully web-based, Delta is able to remotely solve any problems quickly and efficiently. 66

Verulam School has used Amthal Fire & Security to upgrade the security and fire safety measures across the school. Based in St Albans, Verulam School is a secondary school for boys with academy status. The specialist comprehensive school needed to upgrade all security and fire safety measures in line with latest fire regulations, to safeguard the school and ensure the safety of all who attend. The school consulted with Amthal Fire & Security to ensure a complete site survey was conducted that looked at all aspects of safety and security, following which a works programme was established to install new solutions where necessary, working around dedicated learning timetables. Paul Hammond, Site Manager at Verulam School said: “With the academy status of the school, we needed to ensure the security and fire safety measures on site could accommodate not only the school use, but also the extracurricular activity and increasingly wider variety of visitors utilising our premises. Amthal Fire & Security partnered with us right from the initial design process of the security and fire safety requirements through to creating a continuous programme of works planned around our budget, resource allocation and timeframes.” The electronic security solution specified, incorporated IP CCTV together with access control and automatic fire detection systems, all integrated into existing platforms. Most recently, Amthal Fire & Security has installed a new entry system for the school. Jamie Allam, Commercial Director of Amthal Fire & Security added: “The Department for Education is faced with an estimated budget shortfall of £600 million in 2015-16, according to the Association of Colleges. Despite these financial constraints, it is essential that the safety and security of students, staff and the public is not compromised.

The course Of all the golf courses in the world, very few are free from intrusion. Designed by Donald Steel, the Championship Golf Course at Stapleford Park is a rare exception. Located in the heart of England, surrounded by stunning Leicestershire countryside, the golf course is set within the delightfully pure Capability Brown landscape of the estate. With ever-changing views of the House, its lakes and five hundred acre park, this is classic English countryside at its very best. The course wraps around the heart of the estate in two extended loops, never being more than two holes wide, making golf here reminiscent of the great links courses. The Championship golf course is not only challenging but it is also amongst the finest

luxury golf courses in the Midlands. It was selected by the PGA European Seniors Tour to host their newest golf tournament in May 2010. The greens and tees are immaculately maintained to the highest Championship standards. For the PSI Golf Day, players will be treated to a breakfast on arrival before a round of Texas Scramble. Following the lunch there will be a Stableford competition featuring Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive challenges.
