NO SHOW...

2014 will not be the year we have two major security themed events in the UK ecurity Technology Live, the event that was created to fill the space in the calendar (and the slot at the NEC) following the decision by UBM Live to move IFSEC to London ExCeL, was cancelled in February by organisers Clarion. After consultation with industry stakeholders the decision was taken to postpone Security Technology Live 2014, which was scheduled to take place from 13 – 15 May 2014 at the NEC, Birmingham. A statement from the organisers said: “During the last twelve months we have received overwhelming support for our vision of a dedicated security installer event at the NEC. However the prospect of adding another event to the calendar in a year in which the European industry is already focused on their participation at Security in Essen has created significant challenges for a number of our current and potential exhibitors, and as a result we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the first edition of Security Technology Live until 2015.” It was always going to be a tricky one to put together for 2014. IFSEC made a big decision to move to ExCeL this year and many people were interested to see how the first year of the new venue went. Just as there will be many people turning up in London to see what the new IFSEC looks like, there were scores of people that I had spoken to that said they wouldn’t exhibit at Technology Live but would attend to see what it was like. When marketing budgets can probably only support one show, IFSEC was always going to be the winner with Technology Live being more of one to keep an eye on for 2014. Clarion and UBM Live will both be able to assess the picture for 2015 as soon as IFSEC 2014 has finished. Last year IFSEC was said to be 89% re-booked for exhibitors by the close of play on the final day and numbers like that for 2015 would be tough reading for Clarion, while if there are any exhibitors left unsure by the experience at ExCeL, maybe the new event will appeal if the price is right. From a personal point of view I can’t help feeling that it’s unlikely that companies will want to exhibit at both events, which could leave us with two smaller shows rather than the one strong event we have now. I hope this isn’t the case, as for an industry to prosper it needs a healthy industry event and for many, many years this has been IFSEC. Bar perhaps a few hours on the final day of IFSEC this year when everyone tries to get away in time for the England vs Uruguay World Cup game I think the ExCeL will be busy on 1719th June, which might present a problem for the future of Technology Live. Launching a new product in the field of such an overwhelming opponent is not easy. Clarion has certainly got the angle for its event; it’s for installers and it’s in the North, but will that be enough to attract exhibitors and visitors in the shadow of what IFSEC offers? There’s nothing like a little healthy competition in the market to keeps all of us on our toes but what happens to both shows in 2015 rests firmly on the success of IFSEC 2014.

INDUSTRY NEWS

INDUSTRY NEWS BOOK REVIEW – Integrated Electronic Security The worlds of security and IT have been brought together in recent years thanks to the development of IP systems, so a little knowledge can be a risky thing. In response to his experiences with hearing false claims, marketing hype and dubious decisions, security consultant Martin Grigg has written a physical security textbook, ‘Integrated Electronic Security’, which embraces the IP revolution and covers CCTV, access control, perimeter intrusion, biometrics and video

analytics. The author describes the components of an integrated system in language that is suitable for both professionals and novices alike. The text guides the reader, in plain English, through the available technologies used to detect, verify and manage security events. Importantly, while covering IP applications in depth, the book does not neglect legacy analogue technology. Martin has written the book to serve as either a reference book or a cover-to-cover read depending on your requirements. For end-users and installers it will no doubt serve as a reminder for some topics but explain new developments in terminology that will not confuse. Sections on commissioning, maintenance and resilience add an extra layer to the message and will no doubt help strengthen the popularity of the book. ISBN 978-0-9927250-0-6

12% growth for CCTV market predicted The worldwide market for video surveillance equipment is expected to expand by more than 12 percent this year, according to a white paper from IHS Technology entitled “Trends for 2014 Video Surveillance Trends for the Year Ahead.” Revenue in 2014 is expected to rise to $15.9 billion, up from $14.1 billion in 2013, as presented in the attached figure. “During the past decade the video surveillance equipment market has grown quickly, expanding at a double-digit rate in most years,” said Niall Jenkins, research manager, video surveillance and security services for IHS. “This year will be no exception, with growth led by strong demand for fixed-dome and 180/360-degree network camera products. As for vertical markets, the city surveillance and utility/energy sectors will drive the biggest increases in sales.”

Sprinkler study shows potential savings One in five warehouses in England, approximately 621 premises, will have a fire requiring the attendance of fire fighters each year. The total annual cost to the UK economy of fires in English warehouses without fire sprinklers is £232 million. The main finding from a threeyear study conducted independently by BRE Global and commissioned by the Business Sprinkler Alliance (BSA) has shown that sprinklers are, on average, a cost effective investment for warehouses with a floor area above 2,000 sq/m, with the greatest benefit arising from the reduction in direct fire losses. The study looked at the whole-life cost benefit analysis for fire sprinkler installation in three ranges of warehouse sizes. KEY FINDINGS FROM THE BRE STUDY INCLUDE: • The whole life costs for warehouse buildings larger than 2,000 sq/m (around half a football pitch in size) with fire sprinklers are on average 3.7 times lower than ones without them • Fire sprinklers were, on average, not cost-effective in warehouses with an area below 2,000sq/m • Environmental benefits from sprinklers include a reduction in CO2 emissions from fire, reduced size of fire and reduced quantities of water used to fight fire • Only 20% of warehouses between 2,000 and 10,000sq/m are fitted with fire sprinklers. For warehouses above 10,000sq/m, the estimated fraction with fire sprinklers is 67% • If all warehouses above 2,000sq/m were fitted with sprinklers, the annual saving to businesses in England could be up to £210m. Dr Debbie Smith, Director of Fire Science and Building Products at the BRE, said: “Despite a year-on-year decrease in the number of commercial fires, the estimated annual cost of these fires is rising along with related societal and environmental impacts. This project has broken new ground in terms of evaluating these broader sustainability impacts of fire in warehouses and demonstrating that, on average, sprinklers can be shown to deliver a net benefit.” Iain Cox, BSA Chairman and former Chief Fire Officer of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The findings of this study scratch the surface in terms of the return fire sprinklers bring to business. In the future the BSA intends to look at the cost effectiveness fire sprinklers have on other sectors, such as manufacturing. What is clear from the current research is that insurance alone is not enough to fully protect companies from the long-term impacts of fire. We urge the Government to do more to encourage the installation of fire sprinklers in commercial premises and promote a better understanding of the positive impacts of physical resilience.”

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L D U A L C O M

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Bob Bantock, the Operational Risk Business Partner specialising in fire solutions for the National Trust. The National Trust is a well known name across the UK but what actually is their role? First and foremost the National Trust is a charity, founded in 1895, with the aim of saving our nation’s heritage and open spaces. We look after a lot of things: places, spaces, objects and artefacts. Our portfolio includes historic houses, gardens, mills, coastline, forests, farmland, moorland, islands, castles, nature reserves, villages and pubs. It’s very diverse and as a result very challenging. What are the implications of fire risk for the Trust? If we were to have a fire, the impact could be extensive. If any items, artefacts or buildings were damaged, they would be incredibly difficult or impossible to replace. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. How has the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 influenced the way you operate? Many historic properties were built long before fire precautions were invented. This makes it very difficult to apply modern construction methods to them, especially if they are listed. The Fire Safety Order has provided us with a risk-based approach to managing fire safety. All of our staff, in particular our volunteers, are part of our fire safety management strategy. What are the challenges of protecting such a varied portfolio of properties and sites? The challenge is to apply both passive and active fire precautions in a way that is in keeping with the property. Each building is unique and as such it is impossible to take a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Whilst there are listed building concerns to take into account, there are also conservation and curatorial issues to be considered too. What are the principle concerns when choosing a solution? Every building has a fire risk assessment, of which the principle requirement is life safety. This means that consideration must be given to anyone who may potentially be endangered by a fire. Protection of the property and its contents against the spread of a fire is paramount in addition to satisfying the relevant insurance requirements. Given the nature of the buildings we protect, the application of any fire precaution solutions must also be sympathetic to the building’s aesthetics.

It is stated that the combined offering will target opportunities across the world where security is of critical importance such as corporate estates, government, data centres, custodial, Critical National Infrastructure and transportation. Kevin Brownell, now a partner in PTS Consulting, said: “Since the IP revolution, physical security, IT and audiovisual have belonged on the network and this merger underlines that. Presenting physical security as a separate discipline is no longer valid and customers expect integrated solutions. CHQ combining with PTS is an example of joined-up thinking. We’ve been working together on projects for several years and the acquisition provides a seamless offering to our combined customer base.”

INTERVIEW

This month we talk to Ian Smith, Sales Director at Quality Essential Distribution about the company rebrand, trends and the impact of IT-centric installers in today’s market

ESSENTIAL SERVICE

ince establishment in 1997, QED has been supplying and distributing a range of security consumables and equipment to the European security market. With an electrical wholesale background, Ian Smith started the company 17 years ago and with the help of his coDirector Dave Arrowsmith and the team, the company has continued to grow since day one. PSI caught up with Ian just as the organisation was implementing some changes.

S

How have the last twelve months been for the company? The last year has been pretty good actually. We’ve slightly increased our turnover and increased our staffing levels too; in fact we’re looking for more people to join us. It is mainly in the sales department that we’re looking to further improve our expertise; as in recent times we’ve taken on people in other areas to give us new positions such as warehouse manager and operations manager, which helps us to streamline the whole process. With these new appointments, we’ve invested in a higher calibre of employee which helps us with the next progression of the company. The business growth we’ve seen in the last twelve months is very pleasing, especially given the problems that some people in the industry have experienced with budgets being put on hold and austerity measures kicking in. After 17 years the company is changing its name and logo, what’s the idea behind this? When we originally set the company up, it was as Quality Electrical Distribution because we decided to aim at the security market with an electrical product range. With the developments in the market since then, we have adapted our business model to become security distributors and not electrical wholesalers, which is how some people see us. We wanted to keep the QED name because that is how we are known in the security market so we have simply adopted the word “Essential” instead of “Electrical”.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Are there any products selling really well at the moment? IP is growing at a phenomenal rate of knots and is continuing to evolve. When it was first introduced, we were told that the cameras could just fit onto an existing network and no additional infrastructure was required; which of course was not strictly true and left IT managers very upset as their impact on existing systems became evident. It is the advancement of cameras and systems that has allowed the market to reinvent itself. Video recorders have become DVRs and NVRs and the cameras have gone from analogue to IP to HD and show no sign of stopping. The quality and features of the new technology keeps improving, but on the downside there is an excess of cheap, low quality imports in the market. Are there any products you see not doing so well? I would say that coax sales are down. We used to sell up to 500,000m a month, which is now more like 50,000m a month because we are selling more multi-pair Cat5e cabling. When UTP transmission came in a few years ago we thought, “why run lots of four-pair to each individual camera?” and so we developed 12-pair and 25pair Cat5e and we sell a lot of that; stocking it on 1600m drums. We are getting increasing numbers of Cat6 enquiries, as a lot of what we do is infrastructure work such as switches and routers,

“We are always looking for new opportunities and keep an eye out for new and innovative products that we think we can bring to the market” 15

INTERVIEW

(from previous page)

for example we sell various D-Link products which are proving popular. When CCTV was growing years ago, everyone understood that it was all analogue. Some of those installers have moved into IP and some have stayed in analogue, however all of the new generation coming into security installation are ITsavvy and it is no ‘dark art’ to them. This is helping to drive the popularity of networked security and our sales in a new, more IT-based direction. The new company logo as of February 2014

So the integration of IT with security and the influx of IT installers fitting security have changed your market? Very much so and I think the traditional security installer need to be wary. Many IT installers are now fitting CCTV in a similar way to when CCTV was developing; alarm companies started adding surveillance to their portfolio. As CCTV is becoming more of an IT add-on, thanks to IP, it is becoming a service that the IT installer can bring to the customer. Are there any product areas you would like to move into? We are always looking for new opportunities and keep an eye out for new and innovative products that we think we can bring to the market. Essentially, we like unique products that we can offer on an exclusive basis. This helps us to ‘stand out from the crowd’ in the security distribution market, as we offer unique products that solve everyday problems the security installer faces. Furthermore, if a product is available to the whole market, then it just becomes a ‘cheapest price wins’ situation and there is no room for support or service because there is no profit for suppliers. This is ultimately bad for customers; if there is no profit then how can we provide product demos or technical support? Without these services, we have no added-value for the installer. This is why we try and sell the concept of ‘total price of installation’ rather than going into price wars and driving down the value of the market.

“Although some installers may favour price over quality, we won’t buy or sell cheap cable and we feel that this type of approach to business will only strengthen us” 16

Given the troubles the market saw with Norbain a few years ago, how do you avoid going down the same route? We just feel that the business is run well; managing overheads, keeping sensible profit margins etc. We are not a ‘turnover-based’ company, we are here to make profit of course, but are proud to offer customers a good level of service, technical support, financial packages, pre-build and delivery rather than dropping prices just to get the business. I would rather sell the right product for the job than the cheapest.

For example, a few years ago we were supplying RG59B/U copper coated steel cable, the industry standard, and we had an incident with it where the signal wasn’t strong enough over a distance that it should have been able to cope with and the DVR didn’t receive the signal in the correct manner. We decided that the quality of our customer’s installation should not be put at risk, so we changed from RG59B/U to RG59C/U solid copper cable. Although this is a more expensive product, we didn’t mind because we knew that every time we sold the cable it would work. The market saw this as us being more expensive, but we were able to offer something that would not cause any problems and therefore potentially work out better value in the long run. This did, to be honest, lose us some market share, but we stuck to those principles and still today, we only sell copper cabling. Although some installers may favour price over quality, we won’t buy or sell cheap cable and we feel that this type of approach to business will only strengthen us rather than put us in any kind of risk. Any predictions for the future of the market? IP will continue to grow and I think that analogue will become less popular and drop in price. The IP market will become more competitive with prices being driven down and this will filter into the domestic market. You can pick up cheap IP cameras on the Internet and so this will also push the prices down. Just like with the analogue systems where we had the high-end, big name brands, we will have the same with IP technology because for high spec installations such as for the Home Office, NHS etc, there will be more required of the system than just image quality alone. Furthermore, due to these demands there will always be a place for professional security installers who have the expertise to deliver on such contracts. The last five years have been tough and anyone still going is doing something right. I think there is more money becoming available now and there has not been much done in the way of advancement in some areas, with customers sticking with the technology they have, meaning some of those systems are becoming dated. These end-users are beginning to release budgets for new installs to invest in IP, so I think the future is positive for the market.

Available from the end of February 2014, the SNC-HM662 from Sony makes it possible for users to have five megapixel (MP), highresolution video and a 360-degree view of an area with one camera. The SNC-HM662 features a 360degree panomorph lens from ImmerVision which provides clarity and resolution towards the edge of the lens, whereas, says the company, traditional lens technology performs better in the centre. The camera is also optimised to maximise the sensor coverage resulting in a higher resolution where necessary. These features combined make the camera suitable for panoramic overviews. The SNC-HM662 also supports electronic pan/tilt/zoom (ePTZ) and 11 different viewing modes through the Sony Web viewer. The SNC-HM662 is designed to be used with a VMS solution so that ‘de-warping’ (correcting image distortion and straightening the viewed image) can be fulfilled on the client side. This feature gives viewers the advantage of always seeing a complete overview of the recorded video scene, regardless of the live view being digitally cropped and zoomed to an area of interest. The SNC-HM662 also supports two-way audio with an optional microphone and speaker, PoE and edge storage capabilities. www.pro.sony.eu

Thermal camera for low-light or zero-light use DVTEL has released ioimage Thermal, a new line of thermal cameras. Available in fixed and pan-tilt versions, the cameras feature video analytics to deliver image interpretation and comprehension for customers requiring detection in low-light or zero-light environments. Powered by DRS Technologies the cameras can be integrated with existing surveillance systems. The ONVIF Profile-S-compliant ioimage Thermal camera is the first product in the line of edgebased surveillance devices from DVTEL that are optimised to work in low-light conditions. The infrared detector allows ioimage Thermal devices to detect the energy (or heat) that all objects, structures and people emit. This approach, says the company, enables a more consistent image than traditional cameras in harsh environments, such as those affected by fog, haze, smog, smoke, rain and extreme variances in temperature. The new thermal line is compatible with the entire DVTEL IP-based technology portfolio and is scheduled to be available in early 2014 through DVTEL’s network of authorised resellers. www.dvtel.com

Transmitter converts devices to wireless The LGTX434 wireless transmitter module, from Luminite, converts third-party active IR beams, door contacts and other alarm devices to wireless operation. By removing the need for hard-wiring, the transmitter module makes installation quick and simple, with control by Luminite’s Genesis detector system. “The Transmitter Module simplifies and speeds up installation times by using wireless communication,” explains Graham Creek, Managing Director of Luminite. “Detectors and alarm products can be positioned for optimal detection performance, because they don’t require civil works for installation. Only 3 volt or 12 volt power is needed. 12 volts is for when an external power source is used and 3 volts is for when batteries are used. Battery life depends on battery capacity, but is often 2 years or more.” Up to 64 Transmitter Modules and PIRs can be used in a single wireless system, communicating with a Masthead receiver up to 1Km away. The Masthead is connected by RS232 or Ethernet to a CCTV system. www.luminite.co.uk

Real time 720p recording of up to 8 IP channels The VideoNetBox II from Dallmeier offers a more open platform than its predecessor model and a number of enhancements. The VideoNetBox II is a compact appliance for the recording of up to 8 IP video channels. With a new, higher performance processor, all eight channels can now be recorded in real-time in 720p and the synchronised components, says the company, also enable very fast memory speed. SMAVIA recording server software for recording audio and video streams is already installed. The corresponding software SMAVIA viewing client allows for the independent and convenient evaluation of the recordings over Ethernet (LAN/WAN). It can be run on devices with a Windows XP / 7 operating system and is included in the VNB II’s scope of delivery. The pre-installed software is designed as an open platform and together with the according licenses, third-party IP cameras with motion detection can be recorded and configured over the ONVIF protocol. If the installation is to include analogue cameras as well as IP cameras in mixed operation, the VideoNetBox II can be expanded with the optional “Analogue Upgrade Kit” for operating as many as eight analogue channels in hybrid mode. www.dallmeier.com

PRODUCT TEST Bosch Flexidome IP Corner 9000MP Camera

he Bosch Flexidome IP corner 9000MP is a vandal resistant corner mount, 1080p network camera designed to provide coverage of a small (4.5m x 4.5m) room. With a 1/2.7 inch 1.5 Megapixel CMOS sensor, the camera offers a maximum pixel resolution of 1440 x 1080. Camera features include two way audio, onboard IR illumination and a microSD memory card slot for local alarm recording. The unit is ONVIF profile S compliant and may be powered via PoE, 12VDC or 24VAC. Out of the box the Flexidome appears to be of quality and rugged construction. The unit is supplied with the necessary mounting screws/plugs and is intended for corner mounting in a room directly against the ceiling. The camera is supplied with a short cable tail at the rear of the housing for all connections. The tail is just

T

long enough to pass through a wall/ceiling but access will be required very close to the camera (not always easy) or the tail extending. Once correctly mounted, the design offers very little to get a purchase on in terms of trying to forcibly remove it from its mounting. Within the camera itself, there are only two physical adjustments; a pair of reset terminals and a potentiometer for adjusting the IR illumination intensity. The lens is a 2.0mm fixed focal length and there is no means of pan/tilt adjustment as this is considered unnecessary due to the wide angle view provided. Once installed in a corner, the camera provides a claimed coverage of a 4.5m x 4.5m room. All other forms of adjustment are achieved via the camera browser or the Bosch Video Client software application. As stated earlier, the unit may be powered via

12VDC, 24VAC or PoE. What is a little more unusual is that both PoE and a 12/24V supply may be used together providing basic redundancy. The camera arrived with an installation CD containing documentation on the unit but no viewing application software despite this being referred to on the CD and in the quick installation guide. This was however easy to locate on the manufacturers website and download. The unit comes set as DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) by default but reverts to a static IP address if it doesn’t detect a DHCP server on power up. We tried both methods and connected to the camera without incurring any problems. Having connected to the camera browser via Internet Explorer, the live view was visible and the camera does indeed provide coverage of an entire room including looking directly below itself. However, the look down facility means that approximately half of the screen image is taken up with a view of the two adjacent walls and the room itself is confined to a triangle in the centre. Within the browser itself are all the usual functions you would expect in terms of configuring video streams with different live and recording profiles. The camera offers various streams of H.264 together with an MJPEG stream at up to 30 ips. Privacy masking and motion detection may be set up for 4 regions within the image. Two Regions of Interest (ROI) may be configured within the image using an electronic PTZ facility, to produce separate streams for viewing and recording. Bosch use intelligent dynamic noise reduction (iDNR) to actively analyse scene contents and reduce noise artefacts in conjunction with their H.264 compression technology to reduce bandwidth and storage requirements, whilst maintaining clear images. Local recording may be configured for alarm event (with 10s pre-alarm), scheduled or continuous and the memory card slot supports up to 32GB microSDHC or 2TB microSDXC. The camera is true day/night and low light images (with the assistance of the unit’s covert infrared LED illumination) are of good quality even in complete darkness. Two-way audio communication is offered and the onboard microphone provides for audio detection alarm events. The camera may be configured via the browser

THERMAL CAMERAS

Thermal cameras were originally developed for military purposes, but today the technology is being used for many different application areas and has proven an effective measure in the security field. Buildings and boarders can be monitored by thermal cameras, missing people can be found, traffic flows can be analysed and animals can be observed by professional documentaries. hermal imaging technologies are always based on the same principal: Invisible thermal energy emitted from a person or an object is transferred into visible images using electrical pulses. Temperature differences captured by those cameras are displayed in different grayscales. Because thermal energy has a higher wavelength than visible light, thermal cameras providing high quality images in bright sunlight as well as in complete darkness. Furthermore images are not being affected by difficult weather conditions like heavy rain, fog or snow. Therefore 24 hour surveillance is fully guaranteed. According to thermal camera vendor Riva, a wide range of lens angles allows cameras to cover long distances and large areas, thus a huge amount of operating and labour costs can be saved. Thermal cameras also offer further benefits compared to other night vision devises; firstly no light at all is needed to provide a high image quality and secondly also hidden objects or persons become visible. Thus 100 percent surveillance can be guaranteed even in areas such as forests. Additionally thermal cameras including intelligent video analytics can trigger alarms caused by sudden temperature changes like fire.

T

Ideal conditions Thermal cameras have become a good choice as a sensor for “seeing in the dark” because at night background objects tend to be cooler than a person at 98.6 degrees. Under ideal conditions, people are well emphasised at night because they appear brighter than the background and stand out, even in zero light. However, according to Sightlogix, outdoor security conditions are rarely “ideal”, especially during the day when darker objects absorb the sun’s energy and heat up, an effect known as Thermal Loading. When objects in the scene become uniformly hot in any given area, many cameras have difficulty mapping the narrow range of temperature differences into a useful image. The result is an image with large areas that look “whited out” or “greyed out” and undefined. This makes it difficult to see what is happening in the

www.psimagazine.co.uk

HEAT SEEKING? scene, and it makes it difficult for some thermal cameras to automatically detect intruders accurately. Lack of image clarity can reduce security effectiveness and security personnel who have to view blurry, undefined video even on a single monitor can become fatigued and confused by images that are not as intuitive as they would be with daylight cameras, while on-board video analytics will have a more difficult time detecting intruders. Thermal imagery is very rich in data, sensing small temperature variations down to 1/20th of a degree. Thermal cameras must convert these fine temperature variations – representing 16,384 shades of grey – into about 250 grey scales to more closely match the capability of human vision to decipher shades of grey. In the past, many thermal cameras converted this data in a simplistic way by mapping gross areas together that are close in temperature. This is why thermal images often look blurry, lack detail and conceal intruders, while the analytics would often misdetect intruders entirely. New cameras with a high-level of image processing can emphasise small variations between objects and the background to exaggerate the fine details and present a clearer image in contrast to other image features, while automatically detecting intruders accurately, every day, every night, under all outdoor conditions. Any installer that has not taken a look at thermal cameras for a number of years may still be under the impression that the aforementioned lack of detail is a constant with even today’s technology, so here, with the aid of a spokesperson at Flir Systems we find out the current state of play regarding thermal cameras and their uses.

Trends The use of thermal imaging technology and the public’s awareness of its capabilities has increased dramatically in the last decade. Thermal imaging used to be a very expensive technology for military users only. Today, more and more people are discovering the technology and the benefits it has to offer. In tandem with the increased price drop of thermal imaging cameras, another important trend is notable in the market: miniaturisation. Recent advances in miniaturising thermal imaging technology have led to the production of very small

THERMAL CAMERAS

Pricing Since thermal cameras first came to the market they have been pegged with the tag that they are ‘more expensive’ than traditional cameras, but is that really the case? It all comes down to what you want to do with the camera and what the alternative might be. In fact as CCTV systems become more advanced, the security industry will increasingly focus on CCTV installations for 24-hour surveillance, not just day-time operation. To be truly secure, a site must be protected day and night. CCTV systems are effective for security and surveillance applications. However, just like the human eye, CCTV cameras do not see too much in total darkness. So in order to detect intruders at night they are often complemented with traditional lights by mains driven bulbs. Although some bulbs (fluorescent lamps, HID lamps) are more efficient than others, the operational cost remains very high. Light can only penetrate a certain distance and completely illuminating an area, so that it can be kept under surveillance of CCTV cameras, is not always possible. Powering and maintaining the lights can even be more costly. CCTVs with traditional lamp lighting require lamp replacement every 2,000 to 4,000 hours or about every 8 months. Compared to any bulb, LEDs provide significant savings on electrical consumption. LEDs also provide long life performance with little ongoing maintenance costs. The LEDs are often placed around the lens of the camera. LED illumination is compromised by limited range performance. Also, providing lighting for domes has long been a challenge for CCTV professionals as the lighting cannot be fitted to move with the camera. Thermal imaging cameras work both during daytime and night-time and they require no additional lighting or illumination. In sum: even though the price of one single thermal imaging camera might be higher than the price of a CCTV camera, the overall investment costs for a thermal imaging camera perimeter protection system is actually lower. The larger the perimeter, the bigger this difference will become. Since thermal imaging cameras require no lighting to function and given the fact that fewer cameras are needed with the thermal imaging perimeter protection solution, this system will also consume less electricity than the CCTV solution, making the thermal solution less expensive in its upkeep than the CCTV solution. camera cores like the FLIR Tau which allows integrators to build lightweight vision systems. This trend has recently culminated with the launch of the FLIR Lepton core and the launch of FLIR One, the first thermal imager designed for smartphones.

Cooled and un-cooled systems

New cameras with a highlevel of image processing can emphasise small variations between objects and the background to exaggerate 26

The component costs for cooled and uncooled cameras can be quite different, making it extremely important to decide which way to go. A modern cooled thermal imaging camera has an imaging sensor that is integrated with a cryocooler. This is a device that lowers the sensor temperature to cryogenic temperatures. This reduction in sensor temperature is necessary to reduce thermallyinduced noise to a level below that of the signal from the scene being imaged. Cooled thermal imaging cameras are the most sensitive type of cameras to small differences in scene temperature. They can detect the smallest of temperature differences between objects. An uncooled infrared camera is one in which the imaging sensor does not require cryogenic cooling. A common detector design is based on the microbolometer, a tiny vanadium oxide resistor with a large temperature coefficient on a silicon element with large surface area, low heat capacity

and good thermal isolation. Uncooled cameras are generally much less expensive than their counterparts, the cooled infrared cameras. The sensors can be manufactured in fewer steps with higher yields relative to cooled sensors, less expensive vacuum packaging, and uncooled cameras do not require cryocoolers, which are very costly devices. Uncooled cameras have fewer moving parts and tend to have much longer service lives than cooled cameras under similar operating conditions. Security applications often require continuous operation of cameras to avoid the possibility of missing any threats. Cooled cameras will generally require servicing after 1-2 year of operation, while an uncooled camera might work continuously for years. All these advantages of uncooled cameras beg the question: Under what circumstances is it appropriate to use cooled cameras? The answer is that when standoff ranges get out to 5km or greater, thermal imaging systems based on cooled cameras can quickly become more cost-effective. Note the emphasis on the word “systems” – the camera is only one component of an imaging “system”. One of the biggest cost drivers of a long-range uncooled camera system is the lens. As effective range requirements increase, the lenses for uncooled camera systems become so bulky and expensive that it can often be cheaper to specify a cooled camera with an equivalent focal length lens instead. The cooled system cost is high at short focal lengths where the lens cost is a relatively small fraction of the system cost. The system cost does not increase rapidly with focal length, while the uncooled system cost does. This difference in cost is driven by the lens, and the crossover point (currently around 350mm for typical systems) is changing in the rapidly emerging global IR optics market.

Summary In essence, the recent advances in the sensitivity of thermal imagers combined with sophisticated image processing can now present clearer images regardless of conditions. These newer cameras use on-board processing to intelligently remap the image to emphasise the small temperature differences in the hotter objects, presenting an image that will better emphasise potential intruders and at a price that is not as high as the myth promoters would have you believe. As Sightlogix explains, compared to traditional cameras, fewer thermal cameras are needed to protect the same location, reducing the number of poles, trenching and communications needed for a deployment. As a result, thermal cameras are now on par in “cost per foot” with the traditional approaches to perimeter security, such as fence sensors, buried cable, or visible cameras.

Thermal camera with analytics The RTC1130-320 from Riva is a thermal imaging IP camera combining thermal imaging technology with video analytics. The camera already includes VCA Presence as well as VCA Detect as a standard feature meaning filters for direction detection, retention period, speed dependent detection and object classification (persons, animals, vehicles). Other VCA-filters for more specific applications can be purchased additionally at low cost. An included weatherproof housing allows optimal indoor and outdoor utilisation. Furthermore five different lenses between 7.5 and 50 mm with angles of view between 6.2° and 42° are offered. Available as a box version the camera comes with features like dual stream, micro-SD and PoE. A frame rate of up to 30 fps with a maximum resolution of 320x240 can be achieved. The RTC1130-320 has a 17µm uncooled microbolometer. www.rivatech.de

No ambient light needed The LS-Series ultra-compact, hand held thermal night vision FLIR Systems cameras require no ambient light to produce a clear image, even in the darkest environments. The cameras can also ‘see’ through fog, smoke and rain to identify anyone hiding in the shadows, undergrowth or shrubbery. Image intensification, also known as I2 technology, requires at least a minimum level of ambient light to operate. It works by amplifying the available light many thousands of times to create a visual image of the target. However, adverse weather conditions can severely limit the effectiveness of these scopes. And conversely, too much light can overwhelm and compromise their performance. In contrast, the FLIR Systems LS night vision cameras deliver a consistent performance regardless of prevailing light levels. Two models complete the series. The FLIR LS32 with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, has 2x discrete digital zoom and operates over a distance of 640m. Its higher specification counterpart is the LS64 that has a 640 x 480 detector, up to 4x digital zoom, continuous electric zoom and a range capability of 1080m. www.flir.com

CUTTING THE RED TAPE

n April 2011 the Coalition Government announced a three-year campaign to cut red tape for business and as of 27 Jan 2014 was claiming that it had met the Red Tape Challenge target to find 3,000 regulations to scrap and improve. According to research by Croner over half (52%) of those surveyed said the “Red Tape Challenge” campaign has had no impact so far on their business, with a further 41% admitting they are not sure what effect the campaign had. Just 7% of professionals say that it had some impact on their business. Richard Smith of Croner, said: “The findings of the survey highlight what our clients have been saying to us about the campaign. There hasn’t been the bonfire of regulations that the government promised. Many of the reductions are in areas that touch customers infrequently, or have been repackaged into consolidating legislation. That’s because much of the drive towards regulation is EU driven and therefore there is very little that the UK government can do to change those laws.” One of the few areas where people could name a change was in employment law, particularly concerning tribunals and TUPE where changes were welcomed. So we thought we would ask our panel of security experts to come up with some changes that they would adopt for the betterment of the industry:

I

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he would like to cut the amount of red-tape in business saying more than 3,000 rules to be dropped or changed, saving more than £850m a year. What regulations would our panel like to wave goodbye to?

Steve Kimber – FSA Standing Committee & Southern and Northern Monitoring Services Creeping legislation from the SIA! There’s no question that the introduction of SIA licensing has successfully raised standards in the manned guarding sector. But, the plan to license businesses that sub-contract licensable monitoring activity, as well as the individuals carrying out the work just doesn’t make sense. Unfortunately, as a result, many manned guarding companies that also offer some form of CCTV monitoring and reaction, have been caught up in regulation that is entirely unsuitable. RVRCs now have to send each of their operatives on what is a pointless four day course, culminating in an exam and qualification that is unrelated to their actual job. The company then has to apply and pay for a licence for that individual, which is also irrelevant to their work. And that’s not all – under new plans, businesses are going to have to be licensed too! Statutory regulation of a sector that has been successfully self-regulated for 43 years through UKAS accredited inspection bodies is just a stealth tax by

any other name and serves no purpose for businesses or the public, other than to push up cost. We are in the business of protecting client sites. Any licensing should support our ability to do business efficiently and improve the services we offer to our clients. For RVRCs, SIA does neither. The FSA will continue to lobby the SIA and defend the interests of its members to ensure they can continue to provide an excellent service without being overburdened by unnecessary regulation.

Julie Kenny – Pyronix

“It is important that needless regulations are scrapped to make it easier to do business”

34

The announcement from Government that there will be reductions in red-tape for businesses is something that will be welcomed in all industries. It is important that needless regulations are scrapped to make it easier to do business, but there is a need for some simple bureaucracy in any professional industry to help to set and maintain standards. The introduction of the EN50131 standards in the security market sets benchmark criteria for security equipment standards across the EU. These regulations give a more simplified and structured framework than the old British Standards, which also didn’t include wireless systems (which have become much more prevalent in recent years). With industries such as security and fire, there is the protection of homes, businesses and lives at risk; so there will always need to be a way by which these systems can be regulated; and rightly so. However, from an intruder industry standpoint, although the suite of European standards have been in place for many years now, many countries (the UK included) still have their own national additions to the standards. Having designed equipment to comply with the European standards, it then has to be modified to comply with country specific requirements, increasing the product development costs. It would be much easier to do business across Europe if the country

specific standards were removed and equipment could be built to comply with one common standard. In turn this would reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. With a technologically driven market such as security, it is important that the regulations are dynamic, and where standards are brought out at a European level these should complement existing regulations, or remove the need for local, national standards.

David Cameron – Prime Minister Supporting business is a crucial part of our long term economic plan, creating jobs and security for all. That is why, among so many other things, I have insisted on slashing needless regulation. We will be the first government in modern history to have reduced – rather than increased – domestic business regulation during our time in office. This will make it easier for you to grow, to create jobs and to help give this country the long-term security we are working towards. More than 1.3 million new jobs have been created since I came to office – many of them by small businesses. And I know many of you want to grow further – or may be thinking of employing your first person – but have been put off or held back by red tape. So we have trawled through thousands of pieces of regulation – from the serious to the ridiculous, and we will be scrapping or amending over 3,000 regulations – saving business well over £850 million every single year. That’s half a million pounds which will be saved for businesses every single day of the year. I know that while we struggle to bring down domestic regulation, you fear an ever-greater pile of EU-inspired bureaucracy. That’s why I’ve led the fight in Europe to bring an end to this, and continue to press the Commission to implement the 30 recommendations from my Business Taskforce. This government has already stopped needless health and safety inspections. And we will scrap over-zealous rules which dictate how to use a ladder at work or what no-smoking signs must look like. We’ve changed the law so that businesses are no longer automatically liable for an accident that isn’t their fault. And the new Deregulation Bill will exempt 1 million selfemployed people from health and safety law altogether.

STANDARDS

X-SERIES Day or night...

Home decisions

X-SERIES DualLight Dome

TM

Adrian Mealing, Chairman Security Equipment Manufacturers Section, asks: “Home Automation - How does that work with Security Standards?” ell now there’s a question lots of people are asking. The unfortunate thing is not many of them like the most common answer. If you play by the rules, you cannot do it. Hang on a minute, do what exactly? When considering an alarm system, and the question is raised about using home automation, what does the end user actually want to do? Home automation can be many things; it could be a fully integrated system, with control from a touch screen or tablet permanently fixed inside the premises. It could be that the user simply wants to activate lights when there is an activation, or automatically control curtains opening and closing when they arm or disarm the system. Now all of the above, and much more can, and is, being done and I guess all of the interfaces described could be classed as ancillary devices. As long as they don’t interfere with the operation of the alarm system, or affect the security of the site, or cause false alarms there should be no issues right? Let’s take the example of the touch screen or tablet controlling the system. Should that be tampered? According to the requirements of the standards it probably should; but that is never going to happen. Many manufacturers now provide Apps for mobile and tablet type devices, which range from simple set and unset operation, to full blown control. Again the standards in place would prohibit there use, but manufacturers have not developed Apps just to cause installers and stakeholders problems, they are simply reacting to the reality that end users want and expect to be able to control their humble alarm system from many devices, not just the keypad screwed to the wall in their hallway. There are many companies that want a share of the end users’ wallet. Offering security along with an arguably more desirable product such as a smart energy system is desirable, attractive and completely unburdened by the standards in place in the professional market space. Failure of the professional regulated security market to address the needs and wants of the end user will put us all at a disadvantage. Fortunately the industry recognises the need and has started work to establish how we can keep end users and stakeholders happy all at the same time. Hosted by the BSIA in January a meeting of manufacturers, installers, inspectorates, police and insurers was held to discuss how we can accommodate the ever changing end user requirements, when we all know and recognise that standards take time to develop. The meeting was well attended, and very productive with some who had pre-conceived ideas coming round to a more liberal way of thinking. The fact is in the UK we are in a great position to move fast on these issues. Remember the implementation of PD6662? Without a common agreement and understanding from all stakeholders, and the production of BSIA Form171 it would have been impossible to interpret the new requirements in a consistent manner. Industry has a chance to get this one right and meet the requirements of the end user. Failure to do so will end up with more and more end users asking why they should choose a professionally installed solution; with or without the addition of non-security type devices. Next month: Why you should care about standards.

DISTRIBUTORS

BUYING AND SELLING All installers need to source equipment so how do you choose your supplier? Here we look at the benefits of using a company that will support you along the way hen you need to buy equipment how do you define the best place to get it from? You generally have the option of buying direct from the manufacturer or from a distributor. It may all just come down to prices and availability at the time or you may want a little more like product support and warranties. Depending on these requirements you can take your business anywhere and, may even want to become a preferred installed for a specific manufacturer giving you access to their range of products and giving you status in the market. Each of the above mentioned criteria will lead you to make the ultimate decision on your choice of supplier but if have not already tried sourcing product specifically through a distributor this article will give you the lowdown on that option. According to Sam Cherri, Managing Director of G-Tec Distribution, installers are becoming increasingly interested in the quality of the products they are buying and installing which means more work for the distributors. “Whilst installers are shifting more toward quality and are not just concerned with price, it is still up to the distributor to drive the sale,” says Sam. “Distributors, now more than ever, need to educate the installer and to guide and assist them in making informed decisions about the products that they are buying. However, the type of customer a distributor receives very much depends on the market and the clientele they are targeting, whether that’s the budget installer, or the mid-range installer.” Generally speaking, the budget installer isn’t as interested in the quality, customer service, or advice and information available from a distributor. They are still price sensitive, as price remains their key selling point to the end-user. The budget installer will probably not be offering as much after sales care and support to the enduser, so in turn won’t be looking for this from their distributor.

W

Buying direct There is the option of buying direct from the equipment manufacturer and depending on who you speak to there are some benefits for installers in choosing this route.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

“We can’t speak for all manufacturers but installers benefit from buying from us in a variety of ways,” says Steve Riley of Risco. “We offer all of our installer’s full product training as well as regular updates when we launch a new product or they need a refresher. We do everything we can to make selling, installing and servicing our products as easy as possible and once training is over they have day to day access to our dedicated technical support team to answer any questions or queries they have. The reason we offer a dedicated, UK based account manager, a no quibble returns policy, next day delivery and the ability to order online through RISCO store is to help our installer base sell more product, increase their margin and secure and protect their recurring revenue. They have a direct channel to our in-house research and development team who use their feedback to improve our existing products as well as launch new ones. Our sales and marketing toolkit is another differentiator, we try to add value to our installers by providing them with the tools they need to sell more. In my opinion though, the main benefit installers get from buying directly from us is the support network we provide. Ultimately, we do everything we can to help them generate more business.” As previously stated though, there is also the opinion in the market that buying direct might not be for everyone, as not all manufacturers take the same care and attention as Risco. Plus there is the question of the product portfolio. “If you are dealing direct with a manufacturer for your security systems then you have only one product range to choose from,” explains Ian Smith, Sales Director of QED. “If you go through a distributor they may well be able to offer you different options for a single application and if

EDIT features distributor mar14_000_PSI_feb14 25/02/2014 17:47 Page 3

DISTRIBUTORS

you only deal with the one company they can only offer you what they make. Because distributors partner with many different manufacturers they have a much wider range of products to offer. For example, we deal with D-Link offering routers, cameras, switches, drives storage and software in addition to the items we stock from other names.” This means that installers do not have to get their camera from one source, storage from another and cabling from another which all leads to more downtime and administration while items are purchased. When you buy from the manufacturer you will get stock at a good price, but will you always get the same level of service and support as you would from a distributor? “I accept that manufacturers know their products better than anyone, but do they have the same commitment to technical help as a distributor will have?” says Ian. “Some manufacturers, particularly in the access control market, are trying to sell through distributors and also direct, which I think is a tricky business to manage. The distributor is an attractive proposition because they are bringing in business for the manufacturer but for the distributor themselves the manufacturer is, in essence, a competitor, usually offering systems as a lower price because they do not have the margins and overheads of the distributor.” CCTV installers are realising the importance of building a relationship with a distributor and receive guidance and education from the distributor operating within the same geographical market. “Installers also receive supply locally, so they don’t have to wait as long for deliveries,” says Richard Scott, Sales Engineer at G-Tec Distribution. “They will receive expert advice, and technical support which can be imperative to the successful functioning of their business. However, the alarms industry is slightly different. The likes of Chubb and ADT will often still buy direct from a manufacturer.”

Selling direct

“Distributors, now more than ever, need to educate the installer and to guide and assist them in making informed decisions about the products that they are buying” 40

With the option of selling direct it means that not all manufacturers use a distributor, so why should they? Firstly, manufacturers can find it difficult to break into the distributor market, as they don’t have the same level of local knowledge a distributor would. This is of major importance when selling directly to installers. Secondly, a distributor has existing sales and business channels, which provides a quicker route to market as Richard Scott explains: “Taking Far East manufacturers as an example, if they bypass the distributor, they may struggle to connect to the local market; they are

unlikely to be able to offer the same level of customer service and technical support expected by the installer,” he says. “Language and buying culture could also be a barrier. All of this limits the exposure a manufacturer would receive for its products.” In essence, unless a manufacturer is going to take on a salesforce and a support team to cover the whole target country then they will not be offering the same package as a distributor can. In contrast they may lose a little on the margin if selling via a distributor, but whoever the manufacturer works with will be knocking on more doors and if the product is promoted in the right way (not just listed in a catalogue) then sales will be better. “We have just short of 1400 trading clients on the books and it is our job to get them interested in what we can offer them and to provide a service that means they will keep coming back” says Ian Smith. “That is why distribution works; we can take a product to a customer and demo it, we can promote it and we can reach our database easily. If a manufacturer wants to take on the hassle of doing the same then they can, but distribution done right really works and can take on the technical support to allow the manufacturer to get on with doing what they do best.”

The factors The price vs. service, or stock and quick delivery debate depends very much upon the customers’ needs. It is essential for any distributor to know who their market is, and basically know their customer. “Increasingly, service is becoming more important, and with that comes maintaining good stock volumes, and offering speedy delivery,” says Sam Cherri. “It also includes excellent after-sales care, by way of technical support and extended warranties, however the price still has to be right. Installers are happy to spend a little more for a product as long as they get the full customer service package. But, it is vital the price remains competitive, particularly with the advent of the internet, and installers being able to source security equipment and compare prices from a host of suppliers easily.” For a good distributor, adaptability is key, they need to know what the individual customer needs and be able to tailor within reason to their requirements. This is where the personal touch is ever more vital, and more greatly appreciated by installers. This is why for those yet to try the services of a distributor may want to see what benefits there are for going down that route especially if buying direct is not giving you the benefits it can.

INSIDE STORY

Intruder enhancements announced alaxy Flex can be used by installers as a standard piece of equipment, regardless of whether it is being integrated into a commercial or residential building. This flexibility, says the company, provides benefits for installers, who are able to install the product quickly and easily without the need to learn how to operate a new system, and for users who can choose a solution that has both residential and commercial benefits. The new ‘night set’ mode allows homeowners to create separate night-time security set-up, providing protection while they are asleep. This feature enables users to arm only the sensors needed to protect the house perimeter or isolated areas of the house. It also provides a silent mode, removing audible tones during arming and hence allowing users to set the alarm without disturbing others in the house. This feature allows for easier programming for user set-up, which saves installers time on the job. The new firmware also provides a set-up wizard, which simplifies the process of setting up simple alarm signalling to a monitoring station, with or without a back-up signalling path over telephone lines, broadband or wireless GSM/GPRS links. This provides benefits for installers allowing them to take advantage of fast, reliable signalling solutions without the need for extensive training or prolonged set-up times. The new compact housing design provides an ideal solution for systems that do not require several additional add-ons to the basic panel and where space is limited. The new housing provides benefits to installers for quick and easy installation in both residential and commercial settings. The prevalence of smartphones and tablets means that mobile applications are becoming an increasingly popular way of providing services to consumers. The enhanced Galaxy Flex solution capitalises on this ongoing trend by allowing users to access the system remotely – anytime, anywhere – through their own broadband connection by easy download of the ‘Galaxy Flex Range Mobile App’ from any application store.

G

Honeywell has upgraded its Galaxy Flex integrated intruder and access control solution with a ‘night set’ mode, a new compact housing design and a Galaxy Range Mobile App for remote access

42

Accessing Galaxy Flex via its mobile app allows easy remote control of the system at the touch of a button. Features such as status reporting, set and unset, control of groups, outputs and detailed log information can all be accessed on the go. PSI caught up with Martin Pacitti, Galaxy product manager EMEA, Honeywell Security Group to find out more:

You’ve added a ‘night set’ mode. What is the alternative option for systems without it? “With the addition of the ‘night set’ mode installers can now offer the Galaxy Flex system for not only commercial installations but also for residential installations, something they haven’t previously been able to do. This provides several benefits to installers as they do not have to be trained to install it or have to stock separate residential and commercial products. The new ‘night set’ mode also offers residential users the option of several easy to select modes providing further simplicity and ease of use.”

Everyone is talking about remote access via phones and tablets, but are people actually using it? “The feedback we are receiving is that people are using remote access via their mobile devices. With the growth of portable devices such as smartphones and tablets it makes sense for customers to use remote access as they can control their entire security system on the move, saving them time and offering added convenience. The demand for remote access via mobile devices is something that we are seeing grow across the industry.”

Is speeding up the install time the main benefit of the new housing design? “Every aspect of the new housing was designed to help installers do things faster and more easily in comparison to tradition metal enclosures. Everything from the moulded inserts to accept the optional peripheral boards, to the ABS material to allow wireless devices to be clipped into the same box, and the snap-on hinged lid has been specifically designed to speed up install time.” www.honeywellgalaxyflex.com

INSIDE STORY

Real time opportunities he cloud-based platform from LiveGuard enables home security companies to add features such as smartphone remote control and home automation to their existing products. “Many traditional home security alarm companies are starting to see how new pressures are coming from technology change and new entrants like telcos, ISPs and utilities who are starting to move into home security on the back of their home automation offerings,” said Mark Naldrett of LiveGuard. “Plugging into our platform will help traditional alarm companies to get quickly up to-date, inject new life into their product ranges and help them protect and optimise their existing customer base. It will also enable them to compete effectively for new sales against the growing tide of cheaper, lower spec’d foreign products.” LiveGuard’s solution enables homeowners to remotely monitor, protect and control their homes in realtime. The platform supports IP cameras and a wide range of Z-wave-based home automation products offering functionality which includes remote alarm control, live surveillance, zonebased alarming and sensor-driven call alerting with cloud-served incident video footage. If there is a problem the system uses a voice call to get the homeowner’s attention but if the alarm goes unanswered it will then contact specified friends and family in rotation to ensure a rapid response to the situation. Alternatively, integration to Immix Call Centre software means that alarm calls can be relayed direct to a third party monitoring station for professional intervention. Home owners can also use their smartphones to remotely control lights, door locks, heating and a wide range of other electrical devices both individually or on a scheduled basis to simulate occupancy when away from home, prepare their property for their return home and manage energy more efficiently. PSI caught up with Mark Naldrett to find out more about the system:

T

A look at the launch of the real time, remote monitoring platform, LiveGuard

44

There are a number of systems on the market that allow remote alarm monitoring, what’s so special about your solution? “This solution goes beyond simply remote alarm monitoring. Supplied as an integrated add-on to an existing alarm product, users can arm or disarm their alarm remotely and get a voice call alert with relevant alarm footage. They can deal with it themselves or one-touch divert the footage to an ARC, and if they miss the call the system rings a list of nominated people in rotation instead. On top of all this they can also remotely live view as well as control heating, lights, door locks individually or on a scheduled basis to simulate occupancy, prepare their home for their return and even manage energy more efficiently. “

How do you think installers could benefit from offering the LiveGuard solution to their customers? “Supplied as an integrated add-on to existing security alarm products means that installers can sell new product functionalities to their customer base as well as to incoming clients. The combination of home security with home automation gives them a significant new growth sector to tap into to. And installers do not need to be IT experts either – IP cameras, Z-wave sensors and switches are all wireless so auto detected and configured and you don’t need to open a port on the router either – because it is easy to install and use.”

Are security concerns surrounding the use of the cloud now a thing of the past? “Our cloud platform actually increases security because our “heartbeat” technology means we do not have to open a port on the router which is a major security risk, while smartphones can be paired to the system based on their internal IMEI numbers. We also serve alarm footage to smartphones from the cloud servers so it is still available even if the intruder steals the in-home recording device. Air cooled drill for tough jobs DEWALT has announced the redesigned XRP Premium cordless drill driver/hammer drill driver range, featuring brushless technology and a three-speed gearbox for heavy duty jobs and challenging applications. The latest in the XR Lithium Ion Brushless series, this new model is for repetitive drilling and fastening work, and designed to provide runtime in the toughest of situations. The new XRP was designed from the outset to be shorter in length and lighter in weight than previous models. The re-engineered models incorporate the E-Clutch, a compact electronic clutch that enables the hammer drill driver to be 24mm shorter in length, increasing versatility in confined or awkward drilling scenarios. It also ensures more consistent torque settings, says the company. Furthermore, the XRP features an air cooling system to maintain the running temperature at all times. Instead of passing warm motor air along with application dust over the motor, the tool draws fresher, clean air from the base of the unit, to cool the motor more effectively. www.dewalt.co.uk

Software upgrade with virtual keypad Eaton’s security business has announced the availability of the latest software for its Menvier and Scantronic i-on intruder control panels, V4.04, with features that will appeal to installers and enhance the end-user experience. The most notable feature of V4.04 is the introduction of a virtual keypad –that can be accessed via a web browser interface. By using a common web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Microsoft Internet Explorer, via almost any desktop and mobile device, installers and end users can gain remote access to a control panel from anywhere in the world by using an on-screen version of a physical keypad. V4.04 is free of charge and any installers who are part of Eaton’s Touchpoint Membership Programme are able to update control panels with the new software. A key feature that has been improved is the ability of the system to transmit a text message to an end user to alert them about an alarm. This used to rely on network operators’ SMS bureaus, which often proved to be unreliable. V4.04 has added ETSI Protocol 1 functionality as a way to send a text message over PSTN and increase the performance of this feature. www.eaton.com

FOCUS: PERIMETER

Buried protection GPS Plus is a buried differential pressure system suitable for discreet perimeter protection as the entire system is completely invisible. GPS Plus is a passive system and it is, therefore, impossible to ascertain the precise location even by using the most sophisticated detection and measuring equipment and it provides a high probability of detection combined with exceptionally low nuisance alarm rates. Furthermore, due to the fact that the entire design assembly is buried, it is protected from the effects of climatic deterioration or atmospheric interference and requires a minimum of maintenance. GPS Plus uses 2 underground sensing tubes which are normally buried 25-30 cms deep and between 1-1.5 metres apart. Once filled with liquid and pressurised, the tubes will detect and measure the differential change in pressure between them caused by an intruders approach. This differential pressure change is converted to an electrical signal by the underground sensor. The resultant signal is subjected to complex time and frequency domain analysis by the associated peripheral processor to determine whether it has reached the alarm thresholds and also whether it matches particular signal patterns. When all the criteria are met the information is passed to a central Communications Processor unit which will interface into most alarm control and monitoring systems, using either relay contacts or serial interfaces. www.gpsperimeter.co.uk

Fibre optic kit for smaller budgets Redfiber from Optex Europe is a fibre-optic fence perimeter detection ‘kit’ that has been designed to meet the needs of smaller perimeters and smaller budgets. The kits have been tailored to protect a fenced perimeter made of two zones, measuring up to 100m each (RFB-100) or 200m each (RFB-200), each zone with its own alarm output. The kits provide the essentials needed for fence security at a very affordable price and include the fibre optic detection cable in conduit, stainless steel wire ties to attach it to the fence, and the two zone 52

Remote solar powered surveillance Wavesight has launched its first complete remote power surveillance solution, designed for CCTV applications, fixed or mobile, in remote locations where normal utility power is not available or is too costly to install. Utilising solar panel technology, the WaveRPS generates 72W of continuous off-grid power, which can be used to run a CCTV surveillance system. Optically corrected individual solar cells gather ambient light from all angles, even on overcast days, whereas conventional flat panels only work with direct sunlight. The unit can be mounted on all types of street furniture and works with any type or make of CCTV camera. Steve Pittom, MD for Wavesight, commenting on the new launch said, “This power solution enables the rapid deployment of video surveillance networks without the need for the significant expense of civil works for power or communications.” The system is small and lightweight, making it easily portable and quick to deploy. Custom-designed and manufactured in the UK and the USA, using military-grade components, the WaveRPS is listed as suitable for a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. www.wavesight.com alarm processing unit (APU). The system is also designed to provide all the key elements of the fibre optic fence protection and includes the tuning software to be able to complete the installation process. Weather proof housing, additional wire ties and installation and repair kits can be purchased separately. Unlike metallic sensors, says the company, the fibre-optic sensing cable is not affected by harsh environments including UV radiation, moisture, salt or even chemical environments, EMI and lightning strikes. www.optex-europe.com

Connections Hello again, Welcome to this month’s connections column during a period when the relentless weather is causing people so much distress, especially in the South and Home Counties. We thought we might rename SMS’s ARC to Noah’s Ark, fortunately we still have our heads above water (not literally) and we are busily routing alarm and telephone traffic across the virtual telephone and monitoring networks between SMS & NMS. During this extraordinary period of power fails it has been noticeable that many alarm systems standby batteries are not lasting as long as they should, so much so our automated health check reports have been enhanced to identify systems that have a low battery alert within 7 hours of a power fail. We hope this will assist installers to replace old poor performing standby batteries during callouts or maintenance visits. As we all know, systems go into watchdog fault transmitting multiple signals when the power restores after a battery failure, just adding to the volume of signals we receive. As you can imagine it’s been pretty much non-stop since December 23rd with both ARC’s handling huge volumes of power fails, low batteries, comms fails, time schedule violations, unconfirmed alarms and out of hours service coordination calls. Through it all we have managed to maintain all console positions fully occupied with maximum operator’s working day and night, but inevitably answering 90% of all calls within 10 seconds has been testing to say the least! Out & about in the local community you see such a stoic response to the tasks that befall those trying to save their homes and businesses from flood waters, similarly here at SMS & NMS I am extremely proud of the teams in Manchester and Portsmouth who have put their lives on hold to ensure that we maintain service levels to the absolute best of our ability during this difficult time. Inevitably the consumer can at times be very demanding, wanting to know why the callout engineer can’t get to them through the 4ft of water, let alone within 4hrs, or why the police didn’t arrive when their alarm went off! These are difficult times and the emergency services, the local communities, alarm companies and alarm receiving centres are trying to cope with unprecedented weather conditions, hopefully March will bring a respite, so we can start to get back to normal again. We are very fortunate that we have automated many technical or service related signalling allowing us to concentrate on the “real” alarm signals which require operator intervention to dispatch the emergency services. ARC’s are buried in signals that are a requirement of the EN standards and under the current prevailing weather conditions they further compound the volume of activity we receive - only to find that no one wants to attend the site unless it’s a confirmed alarm. Still, nice weather for ducks! Bye for now

aul Tennent is Managing Director of Tavcom which in 2014 is celebrating 20 years as the leading international provider of accredited security systems training. Like his father Mike Tennent, the founder and CEO of Tavcom, Paul passionately believes that formal training programmes leading to accredited and recognised qualifications, as well as CPD structured points through vocational assessment and project work, is a winning formula to ensure that people of all skill levels can be effective and successful in their workplace. You may not have noticed it, but the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice came into force about six months ago. If however you are wondering when you will find time to study it, the good news is that it is only 25 pages long. The even better news is that unless you work for a public body such as the police or local authorities in England or Wales, it does not actually apply to you. The objective of the Government in introducing the new Code was to respond to concerns in respect of the potential misuse of video surveillance in public spaces. According to the BSIA, only one in 70 existing CCTV cameras are in fact under public sector control ownership and so the Code does not cover the vast majority of CCTV installations. If you are a private company or organisation, or you are an installer mainly involved in commercial projects, the Code is not relevant to you. There is plenty of common sense built-into the Code’s 12 guiding principles, such as ‘Use of a surveillance camera system must always be for a specified purpose which is in pursuit of a legitimate aim and necessary to meet an identified pressing need’, and ‘The use of a surveillance camera system must take into account its effect on individuals and their privacy, with regular reviews to ensure its use remains justified.’ To a large extent though, these issues have previously been addressed by the Data Protection Act and it would be surprising if any public sector organisation was to deploy a video surveillance system without first producing an Operational Requirement. The Code does not distinguish between different types of camera systems, but it does state that some of the more advanced forms of technology such as facial recognition or other biometric characteristic recognition solutions ‘need to be clearly justified and proportionate in meeting the stated purpose, and be suitably validated. It should always involve human intervention before decisions are taken that

P

affect an individual adversely.’ Public bodies are expected to be selfregulating with regard to the Code with the Surveillance Camera Commissioner for England and Wales having no enforcement or inspection powers. As previously mentioned, the Code does not apply to private sector video surveillance systems and it does not appear that the Government has any intention of revising it in the future in order for it to do so, despite lobbying from organisations such as Big Brother Watch which would like to see much tighter monitoring of the use of all CCTV cameras. For those of us who work within the electronic security industry, any measures which increase professional standards and enhances the general public’s perception of the value of CCTV, has to be a good thing. The video surveillance industry ability to continue to grow is reliant on its reputation for designing, specifying and installing equipment that is fit for purpose. It will perhaps not come as a surprise to readers that at Tavcom we passionately feel that training can play a crucial role in ensuring all stakeholders, including salespeople and engineers, understand the importance of a well thought out operational requirement the existence of which can result in a well designed system that is capable of meeting the customer’s expectations.

Water success with CCTV upgrade Twelve months ago, Secure Engineering won the tender to extend the existing camera system at one of the largest water sites in the UK. The site in question has over 40 analogue cameras in place, and needed nine new cameras to be used primarily for process monitoring, and also for security. Secure Engineering looked at the site holistically, working out how the camera infrastructure could be utilised to be IP compatible, with the greatest

56

opportunities for the other analogue cameras to be updated when budgets allowed. Water sites can be somewhat harsh environments, with spray, dust and dirt potentially risking image quality. Secure recognised that infrared LED cameras with integrated wiper facilities were needed, to keep the images clear in all weather and lighting conditions. The company installed a Dallmeier NVR, and nine new analogue cameras by Redvision, with IP encoders added to each one. The cameras were linked with an 8-core fibre optic cable, configured in a self-healing ring network that ensures uninterrupted service. This provides the beginning of a new modular system, which the remaining analogue cameras can be added to over time. This work phase nears completion, and will be completed early this year. www.SecureEng.co.uk

Danish complex sees drop in incidents

Access control at border bridges

IQinVision has revealed that Ellemarken Condominiums, located in Køge, Denmark, has deployed a combined IQinVision and Milestone IP video surveillance system to improve safety and reduce vandalism. Smartguard was in charge of project installation. The Ellemarken complex, situated in Køge, Denmark, 45 miles southwest of Copenhagen, is comprised of more than 1,125 one, two, three, and four bedroom units. The condominium’s management sought to improve overall security at the complex, prevent break-ins and theft, reduce graffiti, and most importantly, prevent unauthorised persons from entering buildings through each building’s stairwell entrances. The housing development has deployed 248 IQeye cameras throughout all its buildings, locating them in every stairwell entrance. The majority of the cameras are IQeye Alliance-mx models. Video is recorded at 8 frames per second and is viewed mainly for post-incident investigation. All camera data is managed by Milestone XProtect Corporate IP video management software (VMS), designed for largescale, high-security deployments. Since the cameras have been installed, Ellemarken management has noticed a significant reduction in the number of security incidents. Several crimes have already been solved using video evidence and with the large decrease in the number of crimes and other expensive incidents, management is confident their expenditure on the IQeye cameras will achieve a full return on investment within two years. www.iqeye.com

An access control solution from Access Control Technology (ACT) is being used on the main crossing points between England and South Wales. The two bridge crossings are the (suspension) Severn Bridge and the (cablestayed) Second Severn Crossing which span the estuary between South Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. Severn River Crossing PLC, needed to be able to create a hierarchical access control system in which a user’s rights to enter specific areas of the two bridges could be based on seniority, job profile, date and time of day. There is a total of four maintenance buildings at the two bridges (which are 15 miles apart) and a toll plaza at each. Management make clear distinctions between staff employed on maintenance and those on the toll plazas with the different job profiles being reflected in the access rights encoded into the ACT cards. Emergency managers have 24-hour access to all buildings. Severn River Crossing opted for smart-card technology by using ACTpro DESFire EV1 1040 proximity reader. This is a panel-mount unit which will read serial numbers from any MIFARE card and can produce ‘Clock & Data’ or ‘Weigand’ output. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. Between 200 and 300 users are currently registered on the Severn River Crossing system and the flexibility of the ACTWinPro control software is allowing managers to set up shortterm access rights for contractors and segregate access privileges according to role. Staff are also able to use the software to perform a time and attendance function. A lost card is easily removed from the database and a replacement issued promptly. In crucial areas of the two sites, staff may be required to identify themselves through a pin code as well as at the proximity reader or even be identified by two authorised people before access is given. Alan Jones, Systems Engineer at Severn River Crossing PLC, said: “The ACT system has reduced the number of conventional keys carried by staff and gives us prompt access to vital areas. The control software has improved general auditing abilities, facilitated compliance with certain Payment Card Industry standards and is proving particularly valuable for fire mustering since musters are produced automatically to several printers across the sites.” www.accesscontrol.ie

Hotel resort completes IP upgrade A luxury hotel and resort group has completed the first installation of IDIS DirectIP full-HD surveillance at its new flagship resort in Phuket, Thailand, as part of a wider programme. Ahead of opening the Phuket resort, the group’s security team needed to implement an HD video surveillance solution that would be unobtrusive and match the resorts luxury brand and image. The solution needed to ensure the safety and security of the resort’s guests and staff, while the implementation needed to meet extremely tight deadlines ahead of the inauguration in late 2013. Integrator Rutledge Integrated Systems (RIS) specified the complete end-to-end DirectIP solution, comprising 45 internal and external dome cameras and two 32channel network video recorders (NVRs), is managed through the simple and intuitive IDIS Centre video management software (VMS). The IP-enabled and vandal proof range of one and two megapixel cameras, also feature pan-tilt-zoom, low light and audio functionality. Eighteen terabytes of storage provided by the DirectIP NVRs support the resort’s requirement to store 31 days of footage all in full-HD. Andy Rutlege, Managing Director at RIS, said, “The luxury resort group are an existing customer for RIS, and we were determined to complete the project ahead of the inauguration. We are currently rolling out two similar DirectIP solutions in the Maldives and Miami with another nine scheduled over the next few months.” www.idisglobal.com

FIRE SAFETY

Repeater panel for two-wire fire system

Oxygen reduction system to prevent fires Nobel Fire Systems in conjunction with Isolcell now offers the oxygen reduction fire prevention system, N2 FireFighter. The methodology of the N2 FireFighter is based on the principle of keeping the atmosphere in areas to be protected low in oxygen, less than normal ambient. This will automatically extinguish and inhibit combustion while remaining safe for humans. The effect of this auto-extinguishing atmosphere on humans is the same as the air at 3300m elevation; the partial pressure of oxygen at that height is equal to the partial pressure of oxygen in the methodology of N2 FireFighter. Therefore N2 FireFighter prevents the start of any combustion in the protected areas by monitoring and controlling the proportion of oxygen to nitrogen in the enclosed atmosphere. The oxygen reduction system uses machines with specific, automatically regenerating filters, which modify air through a process with reportedly very low energy consumption. The proportion of oxygen to nitrogen is changed without the need of additional products or compounds. www.nobel-fire-systems.com

EN54 compliant fire panel with VdS certification Bosch Security Systems has further developed its Universal Security System with the UGM 2040 BMA model, a modular, large-scale unit for complex fire alarm systems. The central server is capable of managing up to 200,000 data points, either via serial data paths or Ethernet as required. This makes it particularly suitable for large companies with a decentralised system structure, such as airports, banks, energy supply companies or large plants. The new fire panel UGM 2040 has been awarded VdS certification (G 213071) and conforms now also to EN54-standards. The fire panel is operated centrally via up to ten colour touchscreens for each system node. These touchscreens can either be integrated into a 19-inch system cabinet or positioned on a base for use in different locations. It offers scenariooriented, intuitive operation including full text searching and numerous filter functions, providing a clear overview of even complex systems and rapid processing of alarm messages. The integrated serial interfaces permit the UGM 2040 to connect to existing fire detector systems or subsystems and can serve as a central, cross-system control unit for automated processes in distributed, connected subsystems. In the event of a fire, for example, the system can be used to activate specific approach routes for the fire brigade from a central workstation. www.bosch.com

Fike Safety Technology (FST) has launched a Repeater Panel as part of its TWINFLEX pro Smart 2-Wire Fire Detection System. The Repeater Panel is a small remote display unit that can be connected to a 4 or 8 zone version 2 TWINFLEX pro panel via an RS485 data link, with a maximum of 8 Repeater Panels connected to a single control panel. The unit does not itself connect to or control any devices; it simply reports all fire and fault events that occur in the system. It can also perform system actions over the data link (i.e. silence alarms, reset, sound alarms and silence buzzer). The Repeater Panel is intended to provide display capability at secondary building entrances, nurse’s stations and at any location where the panel event information is required to be displayed. The TWINFLEX pro system incorporates the Multipoint combined smoke and heat detector with built-in sounder, which allows the whole system to be easily installed using only one pair of wires per zone. As Multipoint offers 7 different modes of detection, the installation is made simpler since one device suits all applications. www.fikesafetytech.co.uk

Aluminium enclosed ATEX approved sounders E2S has launched intrinsically safe alarm horn sounders and combination devices with aluminium enclosures. The IS-D105 sounder and IS-DL105 combination device are approved to IECEx and ATEX standards for Zone 0 and the IP66 sealed marine grade aluminium enclosure is phosphated and powder coated, offering enhanced protection for on and offshore applications. The alarm horn produces up to 105 dB(A) at 1 metre with a choice of 49 alarm tones and two additional, remotely selectable, alarm stages. For specific applications, custom tone configurations and frequencies can be engineered. The sounder can be combined with an LED beacon featuring an array of 6 high-intensity LEDs. The alarm sounder and LED beacon can be powered through a single Zener barrier or galvanic isolator. Alternatively, the audible and visual elements of the IS-DL105 combination model can be controlled individually. www.e2s.com

FIRE SAFETY

Kent school expels false alarms Milton Court School in Kent is a one-form educational establishment for children aged 3-11 years old. Over 250 staff and pupils occupy a two storey Victorian building that has undergone extensive refurbishment over recent years to create a stimulating, comfortable and energy efficient learning environment. However, after recognising that its fire detection system was nearing the end of its life and becoming increasingly unreliable, Paula Cruickshank, office manager at Milton Court, took action. She comments, ‘We were experiencing frequent false alarms, which in this type of environment is extremely disruptive. In order to have a more reliable life safety infrastructure we needed a completely new solution that could meet our needs both now and in the future.’ Obsidian Security was awarded the contract in July 2013. Project manager, Ben Aspland, explains, “Milton Court required a BS 5839 compliant category L2 analogue addressable fire detection system. Detection and alarm devices from Hochiki Europe, controlled by a Kentec Syncro AS panel provided an ideal package to meet the school’s requirements.’” The fire detection system is based around

LHDC fire system for power station Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station site licensee and operator EDF Energy placed an order for the supply, installation and commissioning of a Patol linear heat detection cable (LHDC) fire detection system in order to protect cable flats and risers in the power station. Giving early detection of hazards at temperatures well below flame point, the Patol LHDC comprises a coaxial cable inside a protective sheath. The core of each cable is tinned copper coated steel with resistive negative temperature coefficient polymer insulation. The insulation is formulated so that the polymer starts to conduct as temperature rises. When this happens, the controller compares the signal and triggers an alarm. The technology has been applied at the Hinkley B facility to replace an original system installed in the

Hochiki Europe’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP), a total communications solution for intelligent fire detection. The fact that ESP is an open protocol system means that detectors, interfaces and control equipment are interchangeable. To minimise disruption to Milton Court during term time, the work was carried out during August. Describing the scope of the activity, Ben Aspland says, ‘We needed to keep the existing system fully operational to provide complete protection during the process. We also had to put in place a new wiring infrastructure, as the cable that was already in-situ was very old, did not meet the current standards and did not extend into some of the areas where new devices would be sited.’ The system features Hochiki Europe devices including over 60 ALG-EN optical smoke detectors, which feature High Performance Chamber Technology. This minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires and helps to reduce the possibility of unwanted alarms at Milton Court. These are complemented by a number of the company’s heat detectors, sounders, sounder bases and interface units. In addition, ACA-E multi sensors have been sited in the canteen and staff kitchen and were chosen specifically for their ability to alternate between day/night detection modes. The detectors are programmed to operate as heat sensors during normal school hours and as optical smoke sensors and heat sensors outside of these times. This significantly reduces the probability of false activations caused by normal cooking smoke or steam in these areas. The times are set via the control panel time clock and can be reset when necessary to account for changes of use or school holidays. www.hochikieurope.com 1990’s which required 140 local zone monitoring units dispersed throughout the cable flats. The new system offers significant technological advances, employing control modules grouped into five distributed swing frame control cabinets with 19 inch rack-mounted LHDC monitoring and actuation control modules. This makes identification and location of a potential incident much easier, with each control module monitoring the existing zonal length of analogue re-settable LHDC. The modules feature a two stage alarm output, activated when a short length of the cable is elevated in temperature above the pre-defined trip points. The alarm signals from the modules are sent to the site’s fire alarm system and also to 600 zonal metron actuated sprinklers located throughout the cable flats. If the second stage of the two stage alarm is reached, the relevant sprinklers are automatically activated to quickly extinguish the fire in the affected zone. A further benefit is easy access for maintenance, with the control cabinets located outside the cable flat and riser areas, thereby eliminating the need to work in confined spaces. www.patol.co.uk

FIRE SAFETY

Fire safety upgrade for housing association Trent & Dove Housing has recently completed a smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm installation programme using solely Aico mains powered alarms and accessories. Aico 160 Series smoke alarms were originally fitted throughout the 5,200 properties located across East Staffordshire by Trent & Dove Housing shortly after the Association took over the housing stock from East Staffordshire Borough Council in 2001. With the alarms approaching their ten-year replacement date, Trent & Dove undertook a fire risk assessment and decided to increase the specification from a BS 5839-6 category LD3 system to the more robust LD2. This has involved replacing the alarms throughout to the new Aico 160RC series, upgrading to optical alarms on

New hospital protects life and property Apollo Fire Detectors’ Discovery range of fire products have been chosen by Static Systems Group and Skanska to provide life and property protection at the new premises of The Royal London Hospital. The Royal London Hospital has been at its current location on the south side of Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel, since 1757. landings, installing heat alarms in kitchens and interconnecting all alarms on the system, with the addition of a central alarm control switch. To reduce installation times and costs, Trent & Dove Housing has kept the existing Aico 160 series Easi-fit base plates for the alarms fitted upstairs, while installing the ground floor alarms on RadioLINK bases. RadioLINK allows Aico alarms and accessories to be wirelessly interconnected by Radio Frequency (RF) signals rather than cabling, which saves time and disruption when installing systems in existing properties. Martin Veckungs, Project Manager at Trent & Dove Housing, comments on the new alarm specification and the savings made: “Any additional alarms would obviously require mains wiring into the system, however by using heat / smoke alarms and switches with RadioLINK interconnection, we achieved a relatively simple installation without the need to run interconnect cable back to the closest alarm. In order to link into the existing wired alarms we could simply exchange one of the existing bases for a RadioLINK base, keeping disruption and disturbance to a minimum. This solution was ideally suited to properties having no accessible ceiling void such as ground floor / intermediate floor flats.” www.aico.co.uk in the City of London, took place over five years and opened in January 2012. The hospital’s new premises consist of three interconnecting tower blocks – two of 17 storeys and one 10 storeys. There are 746 beds arranged over approximately 26 wards and 26 operating theatres. At peak times there are approximately 7,000 occupants within the hospital’s building and grounds, including patients, staff and visitors. Static Systems recommended Apollo as the solutions provider for the project. In total, more than 10,000 Discovery units are installed throughout The Royal London Hospital’s new building, including around 5,000 multisensor detectors, approx 150 heat detectors and around 1,500 manual call points. The fire system consists of 37 main fire alarm panels with over 180 loops, 17 repeater panels and two Master Inter-ringing Units (MIUs). These are monitored and managed by two central indicating equipment PCs, one in the fire command centre for occupation and use by attending fire officers and one in the 24/7 building management office. The system, which monitors more than 500 zones, also includes around 3,500 input and output units. These units interface with automatic fire dampers, access controlled doors, sprinkler flow and anti-tamper valves, lifts, Motor Control Centres (MCCs), and initiates, via firefighter’s control switches, smoke extract and purge fans. As required by the HTMs, in the case of a fire, the building is evacuated on a phased basis. www.apollo-fire.co.uk

OFF THE WALL

CAUGHT ON CAMERA Fox camera catches sly burglar TV presenter and cameraman Simon King recently captured a burglary suspect in the act using an Axis PTZ P5534-E camera. Authorities are pouring over footage of the incident, which was captured by the former BBC Springwatch presenter who had installed live stream IP recording cameras and iCode’s iCatcher CCTV software to monitor the nocturnal comings and goings of a family of urban foxes in London. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqnvUpmSQr4

A big hole in the car market What with all of the storms the UK has seen this year, the scourge of sinkholes appears to be just one of the results of the adverse weather that we now have to deal with. In America, they have been experiencing holes just opening up in the ground for some time, like this one at a Kentucky Museum. This CCTV footage captures the moment that eight vintage Corvettes at the National Corvette Museum are swallowed up by a 40ft wide hole. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGL8q2Bnwgk

Un-bearable snowfall

As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Look love, you’re famous! So what would you do in this situation? You have a security camera fitted outside the front of your house to capture any nefarious deeds and to keep your family safe but then the camera catches something funny. If you’re Jason Pinkston and the something funny is your wife falling over in the snow, you post it online for the world to see! Wonder if she knows yet… www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8O0w6F1b_c

Flood wave caught on CCTV The UK wasn’t the only place to see flooding this winter. Bolivia’s government declared a national emergency to deal with floods that claimed at least 30 lives and forced 21,000 families from their homes since December 2013. In this clip, footage shows the moment when the Achumani River overflows a canal that goes across the city of La Paz. Fortunately a pedestrian crosses the bridge just before a huge wave engulfs the bridge. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ydG26AwLDs

It’s cute and cuddly video footage with this one as giant panda Da Mao enjoys himself in the record breaking snowfall experienced recently at Toronto Zoo. The zoo closed early in on February 5th so without an audience to spot him the panda thought he was incognito but security cameras caught him playing in the snow. www.youtube.com/watch?v=abWSh52yjZI
