EDITORIAL
Time for a check-up This month the PSI editor has been talking to a few people about network security and the potential problems the security sector could face if the proper precautions are not put in place n the month that gave us the Heartbleed bug (essentially a programming error that leaves all forms of Internet data open to hackers) I have been talking a lot to IT security people about the widespread useage of the Internet in modern security systems. Despite the popularity of analogue technology the IP side of electronic security technology is continually growing, which, depending on who you talk to, brings its own concerns. The speed of the introduction of new systems, programs and apps on the market has been astounding. Today, for example, you can use your mobile phone to check on the status of an intruder alarm or to reset it while checking on CCTV cameras that all is well. All of this is made possible by the use of the Internet. Not that there is anything wrong with using a network, it’s just that with the increasing reliance upon it, it might now be time to take another look at what systems are doing and whether the current set-up is entirely secured. In the early days of IP there was much talk about how secure the Internet was for running security over it and, with the development of firewalls, passwords and data encryption, we were informed that the Net was safe for security – and it mostly is. But perhaps it is time for another look at the use of networks and the measures companies and installers take when fitting the latest systems that offer lots of benefits over IP. After all, cyber criminals have not been sitting around waiting for installers to leave the doors open for them, they are always looking for ways in. Check out this month’s PSI Interview in which we talk to one expert who is concerned about the protection that using the public internet for surveillance purposes gives its users. There is also a note of caution about the previously mentioned glut of systems that offer remote access to alarms and cameras; developments that will no doubt dominate the halls of IFSEC this year. It seems that in our rush for advancement the basic bedrock of the technology, the Web, might now need a quick once-over to make sure that all security measures are still up to the job. Checking firewalls and changing default passwords sounds like a basic task, but your customers need to be aware of where problems can arise or the security of their surveillance data and protection could be at risk.

Securahomes on the acquisition trail Domestic alarm technology company Securahomes has revealed plans to invest over the next five years to acquire alarm companies to increase its share of the UK domestic alarm market. Martin Mann, the company’s Managing Director states: “We want to increase our overall market share, and purchasing alarm companies will help us achieve this goal.” This latest move will see the company invest more than four million pounds over the next five years, buying small to medium-sized alarm installation businesses that have an established or growing customer base. Initially Securahomes is looking to purchase businesses based in or around the Yorkshire region, although Martin states they will also look to secure alarm companies outside of the Yorkshire region should an opportunity become available. “The domestic alarm market is estimated to be worth over £2 billion and those companies who produce new technology innovations, such as wireless monitored systems will be the ones who benefit the most,” adds Martin.

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Elizabeth Rivera, Director of Frank Alarms, the SSAIB accredited security specialists for homes and businesses across London and Hertfordshire. As technology advances, would you say that customers have higher expectations of their security systems? Customers are definitely more tech savvy these days and have raised their expectations. They also quite often do their research online so are more informed. They love that they can receive updates via text message and have 24hr access to their CCTV through their smartphones. What have you found to be your customers’ biggest concern? With long working hours people spend so much more time away from their home than they used to and want to be safe in the knowledge that their property is secure. One of the questions we are asked most frequently is about response times, when customers opt to connect their alarm system to the monitoring station for police response. Customers are also commonly concerned about the consequences of a control panel being taken off the wall or deliberately attacked and the solutions available for this. What measures have Frank Alarms taken over recent years to retain customers? A significant proportion of our custom is word of mouth. Good service is what our business is built upon, our customers know they can rely on us for fair pricing and a quick response whatever their needs may be. Being honest, flexible and providing realistic expectations is essential. As advocates of new technologies, what advice would you give another company when considering replacing their legacy signalling devices? I would definitely encourage them to explore all the options for themselves. We’ve been thoroughly happy with our decision to upgrade and do not doubt that other companies would benefit in the same way. We have a particular customer who owns over 100 sites. They had been having significant problems with their landline connection, so when we were offered a product that removed the need for a phone line we highlighted the many benefits to our customer and they agreed to upgrade all of their sites to DigiAir®. The UK’s economy is predicted to rise during 2014. What is your experience so far? We have seen a steady increase in our business over the last few years and are continuing to grow. By keeping a strong customer focus and our fingers on the pulse of technology we have maintained excellent customer retention levels. Technology is getting cheaper and this makes it more accessible. Customers are excited about what it offers them and it's great to be able to provide extra security and peace of mind.

THE PSI INTERVIEW
THE RISKS OF GOING ‘PUBLIC’ This month we talk to Sonia Blizzard of Beaming about the increase in IP-enabled security devices and the risks of running them over public networks onia Blizzard is the Managing Director of Beaming – a company which offers businesses reliable internet and telephony services. Coming from a corporate background in the telecoms industry, Sonia worked for a firm which is now known as BT Global Services, setting up Beaming in 2004. The company bridges the gap between actual business needs and IT; specifically the broadband and telephone connectivity that’s vital for running a business day to day. Data protection and security are hot topics at the moment, and as technology progresses so does the demand to keep information secure. Remote working and working “on the go” has also called for new products to ensure company data remains secure at all times. Sonia, who has a degree in Mandarin Chinese from Brasenose College, Oxford, lives in St Leonards near Hastings, where Beaming is currently based.
S
How have the last twelve months gone for you? The last year has been great for us; we have really seen the country coming out of recession. As an internet service provider we supply across many sectors and have seen an increase in spend particularly in areas where projects had been put on hold as the freeze on spending has been lifted. It is a great time to be in this industry as the market is still developing and evolving, plus as problem solvers we get to work on some really interesting projects. A few months ago you launched the ProtectNet service to the security market. How has this gone down? We’ve had a lot of interest from alarm receiving centres who are very much coming on board with the system and understand the reasoning behind and the need for the network. We have a number of independent ARCs working with us and they are expanding their requirements. We seem to have generated a lot of interest with the service and are continually finding new areas of growth. I would say however, that there has been a difference in the reaction to the system from the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
various sectors of the security market. From the ARC’s point of view, they can see the simplicity of having the level of control that ProtectNet offers, while for installers there is still a certain amount of education that is required about IP and what the difference is between the public internet and a private network. This is a process of education that we need to tackle in order to explain that there could be risks if equipment is not secured or if a customer’s firewall is not secured. So what are the problems of using a public network for security data? It is all about control. If you are putting a CCTV camera onto the public internet you need to make sure it cannot be accessed by those who do not have permission to do so. The way to do this is to ensure that the firewall is safe and also by not using default passwords. We are very keen in getting the message out that it is very simple to get the installation right, but you need to Sonia Blizzard, MD of Beaming know what to do in the first place. We developed the system specifically for this reason and to make sure “It is all about control. there are no pitfalls for people installing and If you are putting a using IP technology. There are installers in the UK who are very analogue-centric. Do you think that the whole area of IP and internet security is something that needs addressing to avoid problems? We work in partnership with the ARC who, in turn, works in partnership with the installer. Therefore if the installer works well with the ARC then there should be no problems as the network will all be set up ready for them to use. If they want to use the public internet there are some issues to be taken into consideration. Again the ARC will be able to offer advice but it’s a case of where the lines of demarcation are and who is taking ownership of the various parts of the project. For instance, you have the firewall, the broadband and the CCTV camera, so if each party involved communicates properly there should be no problems. The internet is a widely available network, but it is consumer oriented, which does not lend itself to the security market. ISPs carry out maintenance on their networks in the early

THE PSI INTERVIEW
(continued from previous page)
“As soon as anyone puts a device onto the public internet there will be someone trying to get at it. This could be for a number of reasons, but it poses a great risk to businesses”
hours of the morning when traffic is at its lightest so that any disruptions will only affect a small number of their customers. However for 24/7 monitoring services, a loss in connection or bandwidth is not acceptable. It could be said that for alarm receiving centres and remote video monitoring stations, the busiest part of the day is during the night, so they should not be taking risks with connectivity while maintenance is being carried out. Another issue that we have seen quite often is where we have corporate clients experiencing a slow-down in connectivity and not being able to identify why there is a problem. It turns out, as is often the case with large corporations, that there is an overnight data backup over the network which affected the performance of the connection with the ARC. As security measures such as CCTV, alarms etc. combined with the services of an ARC are not cheap, it makes sense to have a specialised network connection that is unaffected by the regular data traffic of the organisation. Of course a big concern for companies is the security of their network. As soon as anyone puts a device onto the public internet there will be someone trying to get at it. This could be for a number of reasons, but it poses a great risk to businesses. This is why we say that security comes down to those same two key aspects –connectivity and device security. So it’s not just about getting a connection? There is a feeling in the business sector that all
14
connectivity is the same and if you get a connection, all will be fine with the system. There are many different types of connectivity, for example we offer uncontended bandwidth as a service, but if you install consumer broadband for your security transmission then you are at risk of unreliable service at certain times as already mentioned. In our experience, people don’t necessarily look at the connectivity; they look at the expense of the equipment and the analytics of cameras etc., but overlook the importance of getting the network they need. The network should be at the top of the priority list, because you can have the best CCTV technology at one end of the process and a great ARC at the other, but if the connection between the two is not suitable then the overall system will not perform as well as it should. I understand that with the rapid pace that technology moves not everyone will be able to keep up to speed with it, but getting the basics right has always been key to a successful security installation. Everybody has an understanding of what the Internet is, but not necessarily the different options and it should not be treated like a utility but instead there are different networks available depending on the application. The default option is to use what is already connected rather than what is suitable for the task. In terms of IP there is a lot of confidence and we are all familiar with how to use smartphones and tablets, but this need to define what exactly is required of the network for the application should be addressed. From the point of view of the customer, it could be said that there is a level of complacency; they are used to their devices but may not necessarily know when their firewall is at risk or when their router is misconfigured and could be trusting a third-party for their IT maintenance, which means that they might not be secure against vulnerabilities. Installing IP security systems onto networks that are not properly managed is another risk that installers need to take into account. Are there any common misunderstandings regarding networks? Quite often people want to use their existing connectivity, which can come with certain challenges, for example with the data back-ups, or there could be wireless hot-spots or other uses for the network that can interfere with the CCTV data traffic. Again, this comes down to education about why the existing network might not be suitable even though it performs fine for day-to-day regular business operations. People need to understand the benefits of splitting network usage into separate entities, one for security and one for business.

SMOKE DETECTION
Are you seeing security installers becoming more involved with the IT side of things? Yes definitely and this will continue in the future. By the very nature of the industry much of the technology is going IP and with the increasing education of the installers there will be more of a crossover into IT as the skill-set develops. However I don’t think we should forget about those installers who have a lot of non-IP experience and knowledge, for them it is just a case of up-skilling from analogue to IP. This is a journey that can easily be achieved with the right amount of information and understanding. Installers must remember the help that ARCs can provide with migration. In the future, will we need to see a highly publicised security breach via a network before businesses realise the value of a dedicated network? Being an internet service provider we might sometimes come across as being a bit paranoid about the things we see on a regular basis, but the criminal fraternity has seen a growing movement from the traditional style of illegal
activities to the ones that involve sitting in front of a computer screen. There are people who spend their time just trying to access as many systems as they can and then coming up with a use for the hack afterwards and this is true of people’s computers as well as their business information and security measures. With the development of IP technology it is not just CCTV that is IP, access control, intruder alarms and lighting can all be accessed remotely over a network so a hacker is now someone who can be sat anywhere in the world, and while they may not carry out a physical break-in themselves, they could facilitate it. I do feel that without the correct protection in place some of the security systems on the market that offer remote access to alarms, cameras etc. could present a risk. Connectivity is a wonderful thing – it has changed the way we run our lives and the way we work, but there has to be an understanding of the risks associated with this. Larger companies are coming to terms with this but there needs to be much more understanding of the threats that come with using public networks especially for those systems that are there for security purposes.

Multi threat fire alarm for complete protection An algorithm within a newly launched fire alarm from Panasonic allows users to detect smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) at the same time. The alarm has been designed to be the solution for applications such as theatres with artificial smoke generators, or factory settings where oil mist may be present. Because it only triggers when smoke, heat and carbon monoxide are detected, the Panasonic 4402 promises high reliability in fire detection. The chemical CO sensor lasts for up to five years and, says the company, consumes very little power. In the case of contamination to a smoke chamber within the alarm, or a chemical sensor reaching the end its useful life, a service signal will notify the need of a replacement. The alarm detects smoke using an infrared light LED and a photodiode with two lenses, while a thermistor detects heat and the CO sensor is a chemical type. business.panasonic.co.uk
Door entry video kits simplify installation Videx Security has introduced a new range of Door Entry Video Kits employing IP technology. The new kit uses the Videx 4000 Series door entry panel which can include up to 64 call buttons and incorporates a colour camera, with IR illumination and a back lit name window. A wide angle (101° vertical, 170° horizontal) camera option is also available. A dedicated button calls the apartment videophone and provides two way full duplex speech and video communication. For flexibility, there are alternative ways to connect the entrance panel and videophones. For a simple one -to-one solution, a power supply can be connected to each device and a single CAT 5 cross over cable can be connected between them. Alternatively an existing LAN or WAN can be used to connect the devices, or a dedicated network can be created using switches and routers. Up to ten devices can be installed in each apartment as a combination of videophones and video monitors, Android tablets and smart phones, as well as a PC app. www.videx-security.com

An upgrade to the base now enables installers to add control to mixed hard-wired and RF systems. All that is required to achieve this is replacing a single base on the hard-wired system with a new base. www.aico.co.uk

Eaton – LX Range Eaton’s Fulleon Business’s new generation LX range has models for wall or ceiling applications and consists of six products, five of which provide coverage of 7.5m. The Squashni G4 LX Ceiling device however, features the largest coverage in the range reaching 15m, making it most suited for large public space applications. A coverage volume code can be found on each product ensuring it is fully compliant to EN 54-23. If installing the products in smaller rooms where a lower coverage volume is required, simply use the switch feature to reduce the coverage and flash rate by half, ensuring no power is consumed unnecessarily and costs are kept to a minimum. www.cooperfulleon.com
Hochiki – CHQWSB2 Beacon The soon to be available CHQ-WSB2 is an addressable loop powered wall sounder beacon designed to provide a range of tones and volumes with a maximum output of up to 102dB(A) (±2dB(A)) with low current consumption. The unit features an integral beacon within the horn utilising high intensity LED technology and is designed to fit to the Standard Base (YBO-R/3(RED)) or the Isolator Base (YBO-R/SCI(RED)). The sounder is IP rated to IP21 for internal use but it can be made weatherproof by utilising the WS2-WPK Weatherproof Kit. www.hochikieurope.com
Detectortesters – Scorpion Scorpion is a remote test solution for point smoke detectors and Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) systems. Testing of hard to access smoke detectors and ASD systems has historically been a challenging task; often attracting high costs and significant disruption or even worse leaving detectors untested. Scorpion is a micro smoke generator permanently installed adjacent to a detector or adjacent to a sampling hole on an ASD pipe – typically at the end of the run. The smoke generator is connected to a Scorpion control panel mounted at a convenient, easy to access location at ground level. Functional testing of the detector is then easily achieved using the Scorpion control panel. www.detectortesters.com

A DAY TO REMEMBER! This year the PSI Golf Day and Premier Awards is returning to Brocket Hall near Welwyn Garden City. Why not come and join us for the day on 17th July?
his year the PSI Golf Day and the Premier Awards return to Brocket Hall, one of the most intriguing of any of the great houses of Britain. With a rich and varied history, the scent of scandal can be found in the fabric of the building back to its roots in the 13th Century right up to the present day. Brocket Hall, as it is known today, was built by renowned architect James Paine for the owner Sir Mathew Lamb in 1760. However, the Hall stands on the site of two predecessors, the original of which was built in 1239. One thing that hasn’t changed over the centuries is the warm welcome that Brocket Hall has always extended to its visitors. In the 18th Century, the concept of hotels didn’t really exist and large houses were built not only for the family to live in, but also to give them give them facilities for meeting and entertaining. It is fitting that Brocket Hall today should once again be used for this original purpose, and a pleasure for us to offer such a remarkable venue to our friends and guests for the day. The Premier Awards Dinner will take place during the evening of 17th July, when we will announce who the winners are of the industry’s only Awards campaign based on the votes of security technology installers. Following the meal and presentations there will be after-dinner

entertainment and the chance to unwind in the luxurious surroundings of Brocket Hall. During the day, the annual PSI Golf Day will pit the skills of the industry’s golfers against each other. With two pristine championship golf courses, the renowned practice facilities of the Palmerston Golf Academy and a charmingly positioned luxury Clubhouse on the banks of the Broadwater Lake, Brocket Hall Golf Club is one of the UK’s most exclusive golf venues and a fantastic venue for our Golf Day. For those looking to stay overnight the Regency stately home boasts 30 luxurious double bedrooms, all of which are named after individuals who have either lived in or been closely associated with Brocket Hall. Its suites are decorated with period antiques, oil paintings and beautiful wallpaper. Providing breath-taking views across the country estate, the luxury accommodation retains a quintessentially British look and feel, while reaching modern standards, befitting Brocket Hall’s international reputation.
We hope you will be able to join us at Brocket Hall this year for a round of golf, awards dinner or both! For more details on taking part contact David Lewis on 0208 295 8309.

IP VIDEO
What’s your position on transmission? Frank “Skip” Haight of Comnet gives us five tips for deploying or upgrading video signal transmission products reating a successful video surveillance system has become very different than it was ten years ago. Taking a backseat in the process is the traditional point to-point analogue surveillance system consisting of analogue cameras transmitting over coaxial cable (coax), UTP or optical fibre. Traditional analogue systems are very much in play and are still being specified and used very successfully; however, network or IP video is gaining significantly every year. Whether you are planning an analogue video CCTV or IP video network, here are some tips to consider when planning your video transmission system. Choose the system that best meets your needs, whether it is analogue or IP video Although IP is now on the leading edge, analogue systems still work well, are cost effective and easy to install. If you are recommending an analogue system, what distances are you facing? For extended distances, fibre optic is a better choice. Instead of being limited to the accepted 750tances that coax cable supports, fibre offers distances in kilometres and miles for multi mode fibre; and larger numbers of miles and kilometres using single mode fibre optic cables. Media cost is very close, but optical fibre gives you the option of transmitting up to 32 channels of uncompressed full motion, full colour, real time video and eight channels of camera control data simultaneously on a single strand of single mode optical fibre, at distances up to 35 miles. Most CCTV projects are a fraction of that distance, but it gives you a perspective on the bandwidth available. Fibre optic, video transmission allows for RS 232, RS422 and RS 485 or “up the coax” camera control data and audio to be transmitted along with the video. It also gives you options regarding video quality and can easily transmit RS 250C Short Haul quality; 10 bit digitally encoded video with no latency over these distances. When you factor in the cost of fibre optic transmission vs. traditional coax or even UTP, it becomes an easy choice. Fibre optic networks also give you many options in terms of system topology, in addition to point to-point and star topologies, fibre optic networks can be designed as add, drop and repeat; and as closed ring, redundant networks. IP or Ethernet based video transmission networks are becoming a greater focus as a solution to

today’s video transmission challenges The move to IP video networks using IP cameras and network products has produced a significant technology shift. Technology continues to evolve and ever improving advancements such as megapixel and cloud topologies have surfaced, and this has helped secure the demand for IP systems. The advantages that a complete, networked solution gives you are significant. Ethernet is standards based, so in theory, if you interconnect different manufacturers’ components, and transmit all types on signals over the same network ese edge and network components is also very attractive. Scalability is also very important and you can easily add on additional edge components at a much less expensive rate much more easily. The network itself has incredible intelligence for self monitoring, redundancy and optimization. You now also have lots of intelligence pushed out to the edge of the network, enabling capabilities like analytics and systems monitoring that far exceed older abilities.
Encode, rip and replace or retrofit? Once the decision has been made to move to an IP CCTV Network, you are faced with a few options regarding video transmission. If the move is in a current facility with an existing analogue CCTV System, you must: • Encode the existing analogue video; • Start over completely; or • Retrofit existing equipment and media. Encoding entails keeping the existing analogue
Although IP is now on the leading edge, analogue systems still work well, are cost-effective and easy to install 31

CCTV cameras and their corresponding media, be it coax, UTP or Fibre Optic and, using a video encoder/decoder; converting the video to Ethernet and inserting it onto the network through a network switch. The IP video is then directed to a network video recorder for monitoring and storage. Encoding is most likely the least expensive way to move to IP video. The encoding/decoding can be done at the remote. location using video encoders or at the head end, where the video can be transported over existing media and encoded before being inserted on to the network Encoding at the remote location can be made with any of hundreds of video encoders available today. If the remote location is unconditioned, then a hardened encoder must be selected, and they are a little more difficult to find. The downside to encoding analogue video is a limitation in. video quality. As good as most analogue cameras are, they are no match for today’s megapixel or high definition cameras. Complete start over. A complete start over is likely the most costly, but is really the only way to truly future proof your CCTV network. So, what do you need to be thinking about with respect to designing a network? First, are you dropping cameras onto an existing network that you are using for normal company operations? That might not be the best planning, as IP video requires a lot of bandwidth. Disrupting or slowing down a company’s existing operational network might not be a prudent decision. Starting a new Ethernet network for security might be the safer bet in the king run. When planning an IP security network, for each location, you need to understand a current need for the number of devices, plus what you expect to need for expansion (vs. cost). You must also be able to determine and plan. Questions that will come up are: How much bandwidth will your devices need, across each segment and aggregated? By using wireless Ethernet transmission, you can avoid the logistical nightmare of running copper or fibre optic cables back to a central monitoring or command and control centre. What distances do you need to cover? The answer to this question determines what type of media you will need to select. For systems that use megapixel or HD IP cameras with distance considerations, single mode fibre optic equipment is a safe choke. Are you using a Managed Ethernet Switch? A managed switch enables a user to control the IP address and features of the switch, giving the ability to precisely optimize and control traffic on the network; thus allowing the media to be used more efficiently. Using managed switches helps the chosen media – copper, fibre or wireless – to use the available bandwidth more efficiently. Can I re use existing cabling? If a fibre optic CCTV
network is/was in place, chances are the fibre can be re used with simple fibre optic media converters or switches with optical ports. If the existing CCTV surveillance network is/was in place and the move to Ethernet is being made, IP video can be transported over the existing coax or UTP. Manufacturers can offer products that can extend distances over existing coax or UTP and support PoE, enabling the transmission of 100Mbps of Ethernet data to distances of approximately 600 meters without PoE or approximately 200 300 meters depending on IP camera power consumption with Class 3 13 watt PoE. There are variations to account for when using higher power, but these distances are good general recommendations. All are greater than the 100 meter generally accepted maximum distance for fast Ethernet.
Is wireless the right choice? Wireless Ethernet transmission holds great potential, as it does not bind you to the logistics of running copper or fibre optic cables. It sounds simple, but there are many parameters that must be factored in to get a favourable installation. Network topology, obstacles, weather and time of year all have to be considered. But many wireless Ethernet product lines promise installation that is basically power, point and play meaning you power up the access point and the field deployed client, point/aim the units using the antenna alignment tool and start transmitting Ethernet. Taking the complexity out of using wireless is a major advantage to acceptance and use. It is still not for every application, but it has its place.
Will the system operate seamlessly? The promise of Ethernet and the entire 1EE802.3 set of standards are to ensure that all IP devices that meet that standard theoretically operate seamlessly over the network. The reality of that promise is that many times, IP devices from different manufacturers do not seamlessly operate. The safe bet for IP video transmission is to choose the transmission products from one manufacturer. If you can find a single source for your Ethernet transmission equipment, be it wireless Ethernet, Fibre Optic Ethernet, Ethernet over copper, Ethernet switches, media converters, having it all operate seamlessly is more likely to occur. In many cases, working closely with the product manufacturer and supplying them or working with them on the system design will allow configuration testing to happen before the installation. Working closely with the manufacturer allows interoperability issues to be solved in the lab and not in the field.

BUSINESS ADVICE
Going the extra mile?
What the law says: All companies have to keep mileage records to show how their vehicles are being used. If the company doesn’t provide free fuel for private use to company car drivers its records must prove it. This requires drivers to record ‘to’ and ‘from’ locations, the reason for the journey and the number of miles travelled.
How to protect your business
Ask yourself, if a tax inspector picked through your mileage records would they be satisfactory? HMRC is now taking the tough love approach and companies need to be prepared
Over payment of business mileage, even unwittingly, is equivalent to providing employees with a private fuel allowance and carries weighty liabilities 34
any UK businesses with company cars and fleets are unwittingly exposing themselves to fines of up to £3,000 per driver, per year in the midst of a major HMRC clampdown on unauthorised vehicle use, according to reports from GPS Tracking Provider RAM Tracking. The company has highlighted the threat following the news that the Government has tasked HMRC with raising an additional £7bn a year in tax revenue, recruiting an additional 2,500 compliance officers to enquire into tax payers affairs’, including business mileage payments. A HMRC pilot study in 2011 found 40 per cent of small firms did not keep adequate business records, with one of the weakest areas being business mileage. An estimated 20,000 Business Record Checks (BRCs) will be carried out this year on small and medium sized businesses (SMB), increasing to 60,000 by 2015. Over payment of business mileage, even unwittingly, is equivalent to providing employees with a private fuel allowance and carries weighty liabilities for tax and national insurance payments. In addition to the associated business disruption, businesses can face fines of up to £3,000 per driver, backdated for up to six years if claims are found to be inaccurate. This leaves businesses with a fleet of 50 vehicles exposed to a potential £900,000 claim. HMRC demands total accuracy on mileage payments and expects to see evidential recording of all journey details, including reasons and postcodes for mileage calculations. Many businesses already have access to this information through their vehicle tracking software but are unaware how to access it, or that some providers, such as RAM Tracking, can guarantee instant access to journey data for three years. Chris McClellan of RAM Tracking told us: “Any company operating a fleet of vehicles will be aware of the obvious cost implications in unauthorised vehicle usage through fuel costs and falsified overtime claims, but many forget this can also result in significant tax liabilities.”
M
Vehicle tracking is one of the most accurate ways to record every mile of every journey, allowing out of hours use to be immediately identified. It captures date, time and mileage details of every journey meaning there’s no need for fleet drivers to trawl through receipts and calendars in an attempt to determine business vs. private mileage. Gavin Fearnley, Commercial Manager at Gough & Kelly, a security service and product provider in the North of England, have found a perfect way to optimise operational efficiency and protect themselves from unauthorised vehicle use all at the same time. “In May 2011 we had our 30-strong fleet fitted with vehicle tracking devices. Gough & Kelly has seen significant growth over the past few years and it had become apparent that in order to protect our employees and ensure the company was compliant with HMRC policies that we needed a system in place that could accurately monitor all vehicle use. “I can safely say the vehicle tracking devices have been a hugely worthwhile investment for the business – it really is the complete fleet management solution. We protect our client’s premises and RAM protects our workforce. With features such as the live mapping and extended stop email alerts, we are always confident we know our employees are safe wherever they may be around the country. RAM also allows us to optimise our operational efficiency and monitor our costing’s through features such as the finance report. “Not only have we enhanced the service to clients with the ability to instantly locate the nearest vehicle and/or direct a security guard or engineer to the premises, but moreover, the end of year mileage accounts, which we previously dreaded, have become a complete breeze. Feeling confident that the company is safe from any potential mistakes in this area is a huge weight off my mind.” Chris McClellan of RAM Tracking added; “It’s not simply a question of employee/employer trust; it’s also being able to provide accurate, detailed mileage records to HMRC when requested. And this can be at any time. “Implementing a vehicle tracking system not only ensures all mileage is recorded, it also provides the business with an online management dashboard where reports can be collated and downloaded within seconds. A quick and easy way to save your business money, increase driver safety and ensure you and your drivers are tax compliant.”

RECRUITMENT
There is a right way and a wrong way to apply for a new job in the security market. Here Mike Hurst of HJA reveals some tips for those looking to move on here certainly seems to be an increased need for experienced and qualified engineers at the moment. I’m seeing this myself in requests from clients and this is clearly a good thing, as people do not employ engineers unless there is work for them, which implies that, for many companies, business is reasonably good. We have seen an increase in demand in both field-based security and fire engineers and more office based engineering and technical positions. There has also been an increase in demand for sales people, but in this article, I am focussing more on engineering. Even though there is this demand, there is still a need for people seeking new careers to present themselves well both on paper and interview. Now this may be preaching to the choir but first impressions do count and no matter how much experience someone may have, a candidate seeking to join a company still needs to have a good CV and a good interview technique: good relationships with recruiters always help as well.
T
The CV The CV should be two or three pages maximum, but remember the first twothirds of the first page are important and that is what is seen when reading on a computer screen. If you are submitting ‘hard copy’, ensure that your CV is printed on good quality white paper. When writing the CV make sure that there are no spelling mistakes as this is a major bugbear for a lot of people. Communicate in the simplest language you can: short words and phrases work best. Use strong active nouns such as engineering, installed, organised, led, created, changed, built etc. There’s no need to include a photograph unless asked for and also no need to write Curriculum Vitae at the top of the page, people know what it is and it saves space. Where possible, write the CV to secure a specific job. At the very least include a covering letter / email specific to the job applied for referring to the advertisement. For example: “ I would like to apply for the role of …. that I saw advertised in ….. I have the ????? qualification that you have asked for and my experience of
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Selling yourself …………… seems to fit the job description. On the CV, make sure that you include full contact details including mobile phone and email and avoid having an unprofessional / jokey answerphone message or email address: not everyone has the same sense of humour as you. Include an overview of yourself and your skills e.g. “An experienced Project Manager with experience of delivering large integrated security systems on time and one budget.” Avoid a style that is too narrative, perhaps using bullet points to stress key areas. Under the ‘Qualifications’ section, summarise your school qualification e.g. 7 ‘GCSEs’, 2 ‘A’ Levels. Other qualifications NVQs, City and Guilds, degrees etc. should be more specific. Also any manufacturer or British Standard type courses, e.g. BS 5399 trained, or IEE 16th Edition etc. If applying for technical or engineering positions, you may want to list products, technologies and systems you are familiar with. Keep all your certificates in a safe place, maybe scan them in to your PC so that you can email over in necessary. This goes for any references as well. You can bring copies with you to an interview. Referring to your ‘Employment History’, start with your most recent position and work backwards and do not leave any gaps, including any periods of unemployment and list any notable achievements, company awards etc. You do not have to include the reasons why you left a job or your remuneration package, unless specifically requested, or unless it benefits you (e.g. if you were made redundant). If you are younger, with a relatively short career, try and include any information that may interest a future employer e.g. part-time jobs, extra-curricular activities, memberships of school clubs, societies etc.
Interviews Be sure you, as much as possible that know exactly what job you are being interviewed for including the salary and benefits package. If it is through a recruitment consultant they may have a job description they can send you before the interview. If not bring along a copy of the job
We have seen an increase in demand in both field-based security and fire engineers and more office based engineering and technical positions 37

advertisement. Make sure you have a phone number for the person you are meeting in case you are running late so you can call ahead. Also make sure you have allowed enough time in your day for the interview and ensure you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there. Don’t forget to prepare and maybe check out the company website for useful information. The person interviewing you may be on LinkedIn, so
have a look at that too. At the interview, take along a copy of your CV, certificates, references etc. as well as a pad and a pen to make notes. Look directly at the interviewer and sit formally but in a relaxed, comfortable manner and remember to answer questions directly and honestly. If you have questions about the job ask them and also ask the interviewer how you have done and what the next step will be. For example “Will there be a second interview?” or “When are you looking for someone to start?” If you are interested in the position, tell them! Don’t be afraid to ask for the position. Don’t overstay your welcome and end by thanking the interviewer for the opportunity to meet them and that you look forward to seeing them again. Good luck!

POWER
How effective is your Power over Ethernet safety net? asks Ian Moore, Managing Director, Elmdene
Potential PoE woes
ith the growing reliance on Power over Ethernet (PoE) in this networked age, to keep security devices like CCTV cameras up and running, it is important for installers to carefully consider what sort of back-up is in place to cope should there be a loss of power. Sadly the reality is that although the appetite for PoE, thanks to ease installation, is expanding rapidly little or no provision is being made to provide a safety net, especially for systems at the edge that are far removed from any potential back-up. In fact awareness of this as an issue, and, crucially, the advisability of adopting standby devices, remains at a worryingly low level.
W
The rise of PoE The attraction regarding PoE, of course, rests with the fact that installers are able to employ standard UTP network cabling to send both power and data down a single cable. This simplicity has the potential to speed up installation time and eliminates the need for a local power source at the device. Worryingly, however, the reliance on PoE to run essential devices such as CCTV cameras or access control systems, where downtime is certainly not an option, throws-up a number of issues. Chief amongst these is an appropriate safety net to ensure there is the capacity to protect systems from worst case scenarios like power outages, whether caused by criminal action or supply problems. Although rare these can have a devastating impact if there is no effective safety net in place.
Bridging the back-up power gap It needs to be remembered that, no matter how good they might be, PoE-driven access control systems still require some form of back-up power to facilitate door control into and out of premises should there be an emergency. Being able to back-up power locally at the door over IP networks can unlock significant cost savings due to not requiring mains installation at each door location. In the case of CCTV cameras, again constant operation really is a necessity. This is even more critical given the roll-out of smart IP cameras as part of a perimeter protection design, featuring microphones, motion detection and sophisticated video analytics like virtual tripwire. A point to throw into the mix here is that you will back up PIRs and contacts as a matter of course, for example, so why wouldn’t you want do the same for your cameras? Experience has shown that should the power fail many CCTV cameras
www.psimagazine.co.uk
sitting at the edge on today’s sites are unlikely to be covered by emergency generators. Adopting a local battery backed supply also takes away the risk of cable damage, whether accidental or deliberate. Beyond this, PoE-driven, wireless access points can also, potentially, benefit from standby power so network users can stay connected even during a blackout. Sadly, we believe that, despite the implications, there remain serious gaps in the way that PoE standby power provision has been handled to date. If power redundancy is considered (it normally isn’t!), one conventional way of delivering standby power is using a simple 240V ac UPS supply situated in a control room environment. This is fine for larger systems where all devices on a PoE switch or midspan need backing up but to provide this for all devices may result in a very bulky and costly UPS system. There is also the question of how much back-up time is possible when you are looking to keep a large number of cameras (critical or not) operational, the answer is that it is usually far too low. In the scenario that a single mission-critical device requires back up this is certainly not an economical or fit-for-purpose approach. Furthermore, when it comes to network runs beyond the 100 metre Cat5/6 limit, fibre optic cabling may be employed with a fibre to PoE media converter so longer distances can be supported. The upshot of these longer runs is that

the devices at the edge are vulnerable and really need to be backed-up ‘out in the field’ rather than centrally.
Powerful solutions
Despite the implications, there remain serious gaps in the way that PoE standby power provision has been handled to date
Given the above, the good news is that vendors are now looking to bring to market solutions that are actually capable of meeting the Power over Ethernet (PoE) challenge head-on, with much longer back-up times in the shape of PoE standby power supplies becoming the order of the day. Considering these in more detail, the new solutions tend to fall into two specific areas. The first types coming to prominence are mains powered, producing 48V dc. These neat and compact units are designed specifically to power PoE Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) devices such as PoE injectors or switches (dc powered) and, typically, feature an industry standard 12V dc lead acid battery to provide battery backed 48V dc power. The other group of PoE devices that manufacturers are bringing on-line (PoE and PoE+) receive their power remotely from PoE so a mains connection is not required at the installation point. Consequently, with local
battery back-up they are ideally suited to support the vital systems that other existing options struggle to support in a cost effective way. This ties-in, for example, with the move towards edge-based CCTV recording, alleviating concerns over malicious damage to cables or unplanned power failures.
Signs of change So to conclude, from the above the need for installers to ensure that there is a robust safety net in place for security devices running on PoE is clear. Unfortunately, because the shortfall isn’t immediately apparent until there is a power outage on site change remains inordinately slow. Having said this, there have some been positive signs over the past twelve months. For our part, we have seen a 50% uplift in demand year-onyear for PoE standby power supplies, which is encouraging. The hope has to be, moving ahead, that more and more installers will start to recognise the operational benefits for their customers of putting in place a level of power redundancy that really is fit-for-purpose.

key focus on business continuity and resilience, this area will showcase companies and industry pioneers who have the expertise, experience and knowledge to guide governments and industry to plan for the protection of their cities. Intelligent Buildings - This area will create a combined fire and security area for both events, focusing on the common area of systems integration and convergence. Unlike other features, it is not a showcase of new products, it’s about holistic solutions. In a nutshell, Intelligent Buildings – Fire & Security opens up opportunities for inter-operability and information sharing between fire, security, IT, data and building management systems. IT & Cyber Security - Threats from cyber and IT crime are increasingly important for businesses. When companies, governments and individuals rely on the internet for their day-to-day business, it’s key to protect businesses and assets. With dedicated providers helping businesses and governments to build their IT and cyber security strategy with the latest solutions and technology, and with dedicated education session, visitors will find everything they need to know about IT and cyber security here. Video Surveillance & Intruder Alarms Covering all aspects of video surveillance and intruder alarms, this dedicated product area will feature the latest products and services in the industry, including video surveillance, central control rooms, and the innovations with high definition technology. Other products on display include ANPR, IP cameras, remote surveillance, thermal imaging, video analytics, intruder alarm systems, detectors, keypads and control panels to protect perimeters from outside threats. Integrated Security - To have an efficient and effective security system, it is essential to ensure that systems are integrated. At IFSEC there will be a focus on how to ensure systems are integrated, so that each product doesn’t work in isolation. This purpose built area will provide access to providers whose job it is to ensure that each area of security is integrated and managed effectively. Access Control - Securing assets is a major focus for international businesses and collaborative efforts between security and IT managers are more and more commonplace when it comes to protecting both buildings and the equipment within them. Key to this is access control. Driven by rising concerns over public and private sector safety, the access control market is set to be worth $8.6 billion by 2018. Perimeter Protection & Physical Security - Due to the heightened threat in today’s world, the importance of protecting property and assets is paramount to all security strategies. The Physical Security area allows visitors to see a range of products in physical security, such as perimeter

Engineers of Tomorrow The UK apprentice and young engineers challenge 2014, titled ‘Engineers of Tomorrow’, celebrates its 14th year at IFSEC International this year. The competition, with a first prize of £1000, provides installers and young engineers with a stage to compete with their peers and represent their company. The Engineers of Tomorrow is sponsored by CSL Dualcom and supported by associations Skills for Security, NSI and the SSAIB with equipment supplied by Texecom and RISCO. The competition offers young engineers the exclusive opportunity to show the industry what they’re made of. Competitors undertake a 90-minute assessment, assessing a previously installed intruder alarm system, identify the faults, recommission the system and finish with any additional security and safety measures. Each entrant is assessed by a panel of judges from the security inspectorates, training and commercial organisations, and points are allocated based on performance in the various disciplines.

lan has always adopted this approach to whatever challenge he has undertaken, and so it is not surprising that throughout his career within the electronic security industry he has taken the time to increase his knowledge and learn from experts on how he can help raise service levels of the organisations he has worked for. Over recent years Alan has attended various training courses which have resulted in him being awarded a Tavcom BTEC accredited Integrated Systems Diploma, and in addition he has also attended various other Tavcom training courses including Managing Security, Managing Disaster Recovery and Managing CCTV Control Rooms courses all of which are BTEC Professional Award certificated. He has also attended other security management courses. “Some people may feel that they can learn ‘on the job’ and to some degree they are of course correct as skill sets can substantially be improved through hands-on real life experiences and by feeding off the knowledge of work colleagues,” said Alan. “However, my learning curve has always been shortened by attending courses where people who really know what they are talking about share that knowledge with me, especially in the technical areas of the CCTV sector. Alan is so passionate about training he has always ensured that high levels of training requirements are embedded and inclusive within his staffing contracts and is helping to work towards an occupational qualification for the CCTV sector with colleagues and organisations for the future. Most of his staff have attended many TAVCOM training courses since the late 1990s. It can safely be said that Alan knows a considerable amount about CCTV. As the Public Safety Centre Manager for the London Borough of Enfield, he has made a point of understanding all the major issues revolving around a technology which has the potential to save lives as well as deter and detect criminal activity. He has performed this role for 18 years after successfully assisting Enfield Council with its bid for £2.1m from the Home Office and previously setting up and managing the control room of the multipartnership system of Stevenage and North Herts Councils. He immediately proceeded to set up the EPSC Codes of practice, processes and procedures from scratch, whilst writing the specification and tendering for staff and bringing in all existing housing cameras and new traffic enforcement cameras. As the Public Safety Centre Manager, Alan manages a state of the art high security Alarm
A
Receiving Centre operating CCTV, traffic camera enforcement and alarm and Lone Worker safety services to Enfield and other clients such as TFL. This is one of the largest and modern public CCTV systems in the country, which became operational in December 2002. His responsibilities include the development and management of all quality control and operational procedures, ensuring compliance with all statutory legislation, and management of all CCTV staff, equipment and contract budgets. Alan is quite rightly proud of the Metropolitan Police Borough Commanders’ commendation he received for outstanding work on an ANPR system installation as he has always looked to help raise the standards within an industry where he has committed a large part of his career to. As such he is a founder and Group Secretary of the CCTV National Standards Forum (CNSF), a member of the Home Office CCTV Surveillance Standards Group and a member of the Sector Skills for Security CCTV standards expert working group as well as being the current Chair of the regional London CCTV Managers Group and Vice Chair of the National Public CCTV Managers Group. “There is no doubt that the knowledge I acquired whilst undertaking the Integrated Systems Diploma and the other Tavcom courses opened my mind as to how I can perform my job better and together with my hands-on work experience, has given me the credibility and confidence to provide opinions on how to raise standards, as well as to plan and develop my systems to adapt to the future direction of video surveillance technology and embrace its benefits. Tavcom Training’s 2014 Prospectus can be viewed online at www.tavcom.com, whilst a printed copy is available upon request. The Prospectus provides information on over 70 accredited classroom and distance learning online courses which collectively cover a diverse range of subjects, including CCTV system planning, CCTV installation, CCTV repair & maintenance, video over IP, control room management and a specific course in respect of the operational requirement. Please note: The above are the personal views of Alan Gardner and do not necessarily represent the opinion of his employer.

STANDARDS TALK
Remote thinking Remote maintenance - enhanced service or cost-cutting exercise? asks Adrian Mealing, Chairman Security Equipment Manufacturers Section he standardisation process in the UK for intruder alarm systems started many years ago. BS4737 provided a foundation for manufacturers, installers, end users and other stakeholders that allowed systems and components to be designed and installed to a "benchmark" accepted by all. Whilst things have moved on considerably, and remote connections to sites have been possible for 20+ years, the take up of remote maintenance still seems to lag behind other technological advances. DD263 intruder and hold-up alarm systems, commissioning, maintenance and remote support code of practice has been around for a good few years. Updated and enhanced for the release of PD6662:2010, the document enables installation companies to provide remote maintenance as well traditional site visits, both for corrective and preventative maintenance. There are many who believe that the end-user (customer) prefers to "see" someone from the alarm company, and whilst this may be true for many, there are probably many more for whom taking a day off work to allow their alarm system to be checked is inconvenient. Service engineers may see the use of remote maintenance as a threat to their role, only requiring them to go to a site once a year. The reality for the savvy company owner could, and should be very different. Table 1 in DD263 details the minimum requirements for preventative maintenance, and that is exactly what they are; the minimum. There is nothing to stop the installation company from doing more, and why wouldn't you? Most systems now provide the ability to carry out remote maintenance over PSTN, IP or via a managed signalling solution. None of these methods will actually cost the installer anything. PSTN calls are made from the site, and IP solutions can be initiated from either end. Rather than responding to an issue on site at the point that it occurs, surely any type of early warning allowing the installer to contact the end-user has to be a "win-win" for both parties? We are all busy and any interruption to a scheduled days work can have knock-on effects. Remote maintenance packages offer the installer the ability to keep an eye on all of his systems, in between any scheduled site visits. Automatically generated reports can flag any issues that are occurring, allowing early intervention. The enhanced service offering to the end user can help differentiate the professional installer from the man with the horse. End users are happy, and used to paying monthly subscription fees for almost everything; why would they not pay a little bit more each month with the added piece of mind that the system that protects their property and possessions is functioning correctly and when needed will perform. Far from being a cost-cutting exercise, remote maintenance offers significant advantages to the professional installer, and huge benefits to the end-user. DD263 allows this enhanced service to be offered to end-users, and it is no surprise that companies offering an enhanced service in any field, often have a much higher retention rate. It's also the case that many of them have higher revenue streams. Next month: Environmental legislation - what you need to know

Ten-zone expander allows detector increase Eaton’s security business has announced the launch of its new 10 zone closed circuit or CC zone expander device that can increase the number of CC inputs per expander on a control panel, allowing more detectors with CC wiring to be installed. The EXPWCC is an addition to Eaton’s range of expanders and has been developed following customer demand for a 10 zone CC product that increases design flexibility. Utilising the same housing as the company’s EXP-W10 expander, which supports five closed circuit (CC) zones the EXPWCC is an upgrade solution for mixed zone systems and can be integrated with Eaton’s Menvier and Scantronic i-onEX control panels. As well as the semi-automatic addressing capability, it has the ability to accommodate all types of resistances – two wire and four wire CC and 1k/1k, 2k2/2k2, 2k2/4k7, 4k7/4k7 fully supervised loop (FSL) – or a combination of these variants. The EXP-WCC also supports masking and fault conditions to be fully Grade 3 compliant. The use of CC technology adds support to any traditionally wired control panels, providing a solution that can be used in almost any situation. The unit is housed within a white plastic case, which has a built-in shrouded back tamper and internal clips to hold the output expander card. For installers the EXP-WCC has the advantage of reducing the need to have extra stock in vans or a warehouse, as one product is now able to cover all installations when expanding a system. Convenience is also factored as the EXP-WCC can be used with the Eaton expander locator, a product that is especially useful for installers who are new to a property, or service engineers. www.eaton.com
Connections Hello again, 12 months on and the problem identified in May 2013 connections column hasn’t been resolved, but the problem is getting a bigger by the day! We all know that ACPO have an issue with non-compliant ARC/RVRC's passing alarm activation's including CCTV images via the 999 service because the installation has not got a URN. But do the NSI & SSAIB compliant ARC/RVRC's help support compliance by also passing CCTV alarms via 999 from systems installed by non-inspected installers who can’t get a URN? - I don’t think so! As a compliant ARC/RVRC abiding to the Standards and the spirit in which they are written we are being repeatedly challenged as to why certain NSI or SSAIB ARC/RVRC's will pass alarms to the police via 999, when we insist there must be a URN to get police response. Come on ACPO; jump on the NSI & SSAIB ARC/RVRC'S for non-compliance to ACPO policy and get off the fence. Also, stop taking 999 calls from non-certificated ARC/RVRC'S as we're getting a little fed up with the lack of consistency in our industry! It always seems the law caters for those who comply and put themselves in a regulated environment, it’s much easier to deal with those who want to comply, than those who blatantly don't or won't. My point is that having done so and being subject to 3rd Party inspection for compliance to Standards (including the ACPO policy), why aren't certificated ARC/RVRC's being picked up for using the 999 service to pass alarm activation's without URN's to the Police service? The non-accredited ARC/RVRC's is another issue altogether, one that needs addressing, otherwise why insist on Standards and URN’s at all? We can see that there is a huge growth in BS8243 visually confirmed alarms using the existing IP signalling for the intruder/fire system which use the installations' URN. However many visually confirmed systems such as RSI Videofied or Visonic Real panels are Grade 2 compliant, but not necessarily installed by NSI or SSAIB installers, or monitored by a Certificated ARC/RVRC. In my view it’s these types of systems and the way the alarm signals are passed to the police via the 999 service that is causing the inconsistency for the regulated marketplace We STILL have a problem Houston and it STILL isn’t getting any better! Bye for now

A solution to the analytics conundrum Digital Barriers has introduced a system to provide smart and simple VCA at the edge. SafeZone-edge, which integrates with Axis network cameras, has been designed to overcome the limitations of both server-based and conventional edge-based systems. i-LIDS approved, the SafeZone-edge setup interface provides application installation, license activation and automatic calibration of multiple cameras, enabling a lone installer to deploy the system in just a few clicks on smaller sites – while additional calibration modes simplify the installation of large numbers of cameras. Daren Lang, Manager - Business Development, Northern Europe at Axis said: “SafeZone-edge is a very exciting solution and intrusion detection package that provides Axis camera users with a compelling argument for embedding video analytics at the edge of the network. Digital Barriers are using Axis cameras as the platform to deliver a solution that is not only cost-effective but also provides levels of accuracy and robustness that is usually only associated with server-based applications.” www.axis.com

Addressable detector makes savings in estate Fike Safety Technology has supplied its Quadnet analogue addressable system for a residential building complex in India. The Wembley Estate in the Gurgaon District of Haryana has eight tower blocks with 13 floors in each. The use of Fike’s fire detection technology has reportedly resulted in cost savings for the project, whilst providing fire protection. The initial tender specification required the installation of 575 conventional detectors, 600 manual call points, 120 sounders and eight conventional panels, one for each tower, and one repeater panel for the security control room. The total cabling requirement was in excess of 50,000 m. Spectrum Safety Solutions Pvt proposed a different solution using a single Quadnet panel and Fike’s multi-criteria addressable detector. “It was the use of Fike’s addressable detector that enabled us to completely re-design the solution and offer the client cost savings and the advantages of analogue addressable detection compared to the specified conventional system,” said Vijay Arora, Spectrum Safety Solutions’ General Sales Manager. “The multi-criteria detector offers multiple modes of operation combining smoke and rate of rise heat detection, with a built-in input module, fault isolator and optional integral sounder. This allows the detectors to be matched to the environments in which they are installed and reduces the amount of cable required as no separate sounder circuit is needed.” The final installation consisted of five conventional manual call points on each floor being wired to an input module in an addressable detector. A single four-loop Quadnet panel communicated with all 575
Fire system cuts false alarms Medreich has chosen Notifier’s FAAST (Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology) solution to provide protection at its warehouse facility in Feltham, Middlesex. The FAAST system forms part of an integrated Notifier fire protection system covering the complete site, including offices and packaging areas. It was designed, installed and commissioned by Notifier Gold Partner Uny Systems. Uny Systems recommended the solution to meet Medreich’s requirements. “The previous system incorporated beam sensors and was prone to a high level of unwanted alarms,” says Paul Hollington, support team manager, Uny Systems. “In contrast to a standard point detection solution, the new FAAST aspirating

addressable detectors in all eight towers. No additional sounders were required to be installed, as the built-in sounders in the detectors were used where required. The single Quadnet panel replaced the originally specified eight conventional panels, thereby reducing the proposed eight manned stations, one in each tower, to one for the whole complex. The total cable installed was less than 15,000 m, another saving compared to the original 50,000 m specified in the tender.
smoke detector incorporates LED and infra-red laser technologies to eliminate false alarms. We already had experience working with Medreich in providing maintenance reports and it was clear that the existing solution provided inadequate protection for a busy distribution warehouse carrying medicines being used in major world markets.” The FAAST system, which draws in air at all levels of the warehouse through a network of sample pipes to a central monitor located at ground level, remains unaffected by standard warehouse activity. It incorporates dual vision sensing technology, which can detect low concentrations of smoke and identify nuisances such as dust that have the potential to cause false alarms.

Eye Hospital upgrades with sounders London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital has turned to Vimpex for a major upgrade to their fire alarm system. In the first phase of the project, Moorfields has replaced fire alarm bells with 250 multi-message Fire-Cryer Plus voice sounders.
When the project is complete, the hospital will have over 500 Fire-Cryers fitted. Since staff and occupants are familiar with the traditional bell tone, the Fire-Cryers have been programed so that a realistic bell tone precedes the evacuation and alarm messages. The system has been configured into 48 zones to allow phased evacuation of the building in the event of a fire. This also reduces the disruption to patients and staff in the event of a false alarm or an incident that can quickly be resolved. The use of unambiguous voice messages to accompany the traditional bell tone will aid safe evacuation by removing the confusion often associated with building alarms. Each voice sounder can be programmed with up to seven messages from a library of thousands, many of which are multi-lingual, ensuring that any site requirement can be fulfilled. The units can be synchronised and have a low current consumption allowing simple replacement of existing sounders and bells. The multi-message capability also ensures that system test and all clear messages can be easily transmitted avoiding confusion with the fire/evacuation alarm. All of the Fire-Cryers at Moorfields are the standard wall-mounted units, some of which have been specified with the integral synchronised high-output LED strobe, ensuring alarms can be seen, heard and understood.

PAINLESS INSTALLATION AT DENTAL HOSPITAL When the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commissioned the upgrade of the fire detection system at the Eastman Dental Hospital, Apollo was selected as the technology provider by Fisk Fire Group, the company appointed to supply and install the system to protect the site’s staff, patients and property. The Apollo fire detection system, which operates a ‘one out all out’ evacuation sequence, consists of approximately 1200 XP95 detectors which were specified to meet the main fire detection requirements throughout the five storeys of the building. The system was designed around six 5-loop networked Morley panels, as well as a repeater panel.
DAKS upgrades surveillance with IP Fashion company DAKS has implemented IDIS DirectIP surveillance at its stores on Old Bond Street and Jermyn Street in London. Rutledge Integrated Systems (RIS) won the contract to install and maintain the DirectIP solution through a competitive bid situation. Previously using an aging analogue CCTV system, DAKS faced an increasing level of theft, with the legacy system providing inadequate views of shop floors, coupled to poor clarity of
60
As a result of the complex NHS environment, the Fisk Fire Group and Eastman Dental Hospital project team had to take an unusual approach to installation, as director, Tel Fisk, explains: “Due to the Eastman Dental Hospital being not only a busy NHS hospital, but also a diverse training and research facility, no day works were allowed on site. To overcome this challenge, our installation schedule was carried out between the hours of 7pm to 5am, and was completed to a tight timetable.” The Eastman Dental Hospital’s fire detection system also incorporates 156 of Apollo’s new XP95 manual call points. Designed to comply with European standard EN54?11:2001, the manual call points are supplied with isolators, meaning that additional isolation devices are not required. In addition to being EN54?11 compliant, the Apollo manual call points include a number of features designed to make installation and testing quick, easy and cost effective. These include the manual call points being loop-powered (thus saving wiring costs), having bi-coloured LEDs to indicate fault and normal conditions and incorporating a resettable element for fast testing and resetting of the device. image and slow retrieval of footage. The DirectIP full-HD solution features sixteen two-megapixel flat dome cameras with wide angle lenses at the store on Old Bond Street plus eleven cameras at Jermyn Street. Connected to 32-channel DirectIP NVRs, staff are able to monitor stores directly from the cash desk to quickly detect any suspicious behaviour, rapidly retrieve footage and subsequently reduce shrinkage. The unobtrusive flat dome cameras and the design of DirectIP NVRs are conducive to the high-end retail experience offered by the DAKS label. Commenting on the solution, Ray Price, Head of Maintenance at DAKS, said, “The RIS and IDIS solution offered us a fast return-oninvestment through a reduction in theft, while the elimination of annual video management license fees ensures a low cost of ownership.” Lewis Hayzelden, Operations Manager, RIS, added, “DirectIP facilitated a simple and rapid out-ofhours installation without disrupting a busy retail environment. Using true plug-andplay simplicity, we implemented the solution and trained DAKS staff at each of the stores in under eight hours.”

Primary school manages access control Betty Layward Primary School has chosen Delta Security to supply and install an EntrySign visitor and contractor management system to increase
the security and safety of pupils, staff and visitors at the Stoke Newington-based school. The EntrySign system integrates with all access control systems and provides users with an intuitive, touch-screen interface that increases the accuracy of information pertaining to who is on site at any one time. Terry Purdy, Premises Manager at the Betty Layward Primary School, says the school wanted a system that would give them full visibility of who was on premises: “Prior to using EntrySign we used a number of different sign-in books and procedures. Using the EntrySign system has enabled us to amalgamate all data and print off all necessary reports at the touch of a button.” The EntrySign system can be personalised to match any corporate identity, is compliant with HSE legislation and as well as reporting, it simplifies the process of printing visitor passes and has the option of including a signature and photo on visitor badges. Because EntrySign integrates with Betty Layward Primary School’s Salto access control system, employees are able to continue using the same passes, saving the school additional set up costs. Other benefits include its ability to pre-book expected visitors and contractors for even quicker sign in, its low running costs as it does not use printer ink and its ability to monitor staff attendance and time-keeping.

Site foxed by false alarms sees reduction A high security storage facility blighted by false alarms triggered by foxes has seen a dramatic reduction following a visit by an Optex engineer and a review of the siting of the detectors. Keetons Business Park provides storage for caravans, motor homes, trailer tents and boats. CCTV covers the site 24/7 and is monitored by EMCS with entry is via a secure gated system. Simon and Gail Doyle, the owners of Keetons Business Park, said the site’s CCTV system using solely PIR motion sensors was experiencing numerous false alarms triggered by foxes, so they approached Neil
64
Makin, Director at Central Electrical. He sought advice from Optex to see if the issue could be resolved by using a different sensing technology, and also reviewing the sensor’s location. “After a visit from an engineer, a dual technology detector using combined passive infrared and microwave technology was installed on a trial basis and positioned in the best place to capture any potential intruder, but not detect foxes or other small animals. So far we have had very few false alarms and it is working very well.” The Redwave that was specified has reduced alarms from several a day to virtually none. Neil says: “We have been using Optex Redwall products for a number of years but were not aware of this animal immunity feature provided by the dual tech Redwave detectors,” he says. “Since they have been installed and the detection area correctly set, there have been practically no false alarms and it has worked flawlessly – it detects those that should not be on site and not foxes and other small animals.” Nigel Hackett of Optex Europe says: “Medium sized nocturnal animals such as foxes are a common cause of false alarms when the system relies on passive infrared technology only. Using a combined microwave/PIR motion sensor like Redwave allows users to analyse the target further and ignore animals.”

OFF THE WALL
CAUGHT ON CAMERA Bare-faced cheek A woman was caught on CCTV stealing two boxes of wine from a Publix grocery store in Ocala, Florida on April 8. What is a little more unusual is that she appeared to be pantless as she walks past several customers on her way into the store. She appeared to be listening to music from a tablet held to her ear while wearing nothing below the belt. Amazingly she avoided being noticed by employees as she made her way of the store with two boxes of wine valued at $41.68. www.youtube.com/watch?v=saeOQZvSFJM
Nipper nabbed Following a series of vehicles being reported damaged by vandals one resident installed CCTV to try and catch the culprits in action. The surprising result was that it was a local Border Collie dog that was found responsible for causing the slashed car tyre misery. Jess had apparently been using her daily walk to bite the two nearside tyres of cars she came across - causing slow punctures and flat tyres by morning. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cXcNL226-I
The safety dance Being on your own in an office can be a bit of a bore so what about relieving the tension with a little dance routine? This CCTV footage shows a lonely security guard busting some moves to the music on his personal stereo while admiring the his style on the reception mirror. Makes you wonder what some people get up to when they know that there isn’t a camera in the room.
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the fight against crime, however once in a while it captures the public doing something that is perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a real one-off moment. Here we look at a look at CCTV clips from around the world… Picture clues According to Daily Mail reports in April, CCTV may have captured the elusive ‘street artist’ Banksy as he was installing his latest creation in Bristol. Cameras - ironically set up to deter graffiti artists - filmed two people dressed as workmen unloading kit from the back of a white van in the early hours. The video belongs to Broad Plain and Riverside Youth Project - they removed the artwork hours after it was put up, sparking a row over theft - and even leading to the leader receiving death threats. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqUjH4iX2ZQ
Bar fly on camera There are some alarming statistics as to the number of pubs closing each week in the UK, however perhaps it’s no bad thing judging by the number of landlords claiming that CCTV cameras have allegedly captured ghosts on the premises. This footage is supposedly of a spectre at The White Lion pub in Yorkshire although from just a single viewing it is clear that it is an insect. Nice try guys. www.youtube.com/watch?v=m10GOevVqMo
