ike any business sector the security industry has not missed out on the impact of the economic crises of the last few years. In the early days of the recession there were two schools of thought; firstly that some major jobs would be moth-balled until a time when cash-flow was at more of a premium and secondly, as is usual for a recession, crime would rise so more security measures would be required. Looking back there is a case for both of these scenarios having happened to some extent. The major crimes of the early downturn appeared to be the theft of items such as diesel and metal machinery and oddities (manhole covers, cable and statues etc) for scrap value. These thefts did lead to an increase in surveillance and monitoring applications and the theft of fuel (as prices remain high) is still a major problem for the police. Indeed the CCTV market in the UK did not slow down during the recession as a recent report from Key Note shows a value growth of 3.1% in 2012 and a 5.8% growth in 2013. People did not stop buying cameras in general, but the major contracts were held back. In terms of shelved projects this was a problem for installers as there was an increasing reliance upon existing customers and maintenance contracts to get through the tough times. Furthermore the much publicised encroachment of IT integrators moving into the security sphere along with the introduction of cheap DIY network security products on the high street added further pressures to the bottom line. But changes are apparently afoot. The green shoots of recovery are now beginning to blossom and many of the people we have spoken to over the last few months have said that they are definitely seeing a change in the market. Indeed all the signs from the economic commentators give the impression that the UK market is doing rather well these days. Industrial output is up, the service sector is still growing, unemployment is down, house prices are rising and house building is also on the up and other similar factors are all contributing to the fact that the UK is currently showing signs of having the best growth of all the G7 countries. Most experts (apart from those with political agendas) agree that the economic tide had turned. On the crest of this wave the moth-balled projects are beginning to come to fruition and this is good news for the security installer as larger contracts are now on the table. The aforementioned market report from Key Note predicts a CCTV value growth of 3.8% for 2014 yet there are people that we have spoken to that believe this will be higher, especially once companies begin looking to free up budgets that had been tightened in previous years. Whatever the final figures prove to be, the times are beginning to look financially rosier for the security installer. Obviously there is not going to be a sudden pot of gold waiting for all of you in the office one morning, but all predictions are looking positive – which is much welcome news.

INDUSTRY NEWS
INDUSTRY NEWS UK CCTV market to continue growing this year According to ‘Closed Circuit Television’, a new Market Update from business intelligence
provider Key Note, the UK closed-circuit television (CCTV) market grew in value by 3.1% in 2012 and 5.8% in 2013. Key Note anticipates growth was driven by economic recovery and increased business confidence which has been fuelling demand for updated equipment and parts. New construction activity and business investment levels are strong indicators of demand for CCTV systems, as it provides major opportunities for CCTV businesses. Government figures show that construction output in the UK increased by 1.6% in 2013, while business investment in the UK decreased by 1% in the same year. Last year, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) announced radical measures to reduce the recurrence of abuse and neglect in British care homes by allowing the installation of hidden CCTV cameras. Care home provider, HC-One, became the first care home in the UK to install CCTV cameras in its care facilities and it is highly likely that CCTV in care homes will become more common in coming years. Key Note forecasts the UK CCTV market will increase further in 2014, by 3.8%.

Dahua provides open access to HDCVI The HDcctv Alliance has revealed that ZheJiang Dahua Technology has opened its patented HDCVI technology, the basis for the HDcctv AT 2.0 standard, to the global video surveillance industry, through the HDcctv Alliance Member Intellectual Property Agreement. First introduced in late 2012, HDCVI technology transmits HDTV signals over any legacy CCTV cabling infrastructure. The HDcctv Alliance ratified HDcctv AT 2.0 in February 2014. HDcctv AT 2.0 compliance ensures 100% plug ‘n’ play remote control of any camera from any compliant DVR, no matter which manufacturers. “Dahua developed HDCVI technology to help our growing customer base to enjoy more of the benefits of HD IP surveillance,” said Mr. Zhu Jiangming, Dahua executive vice president and the principal inventor of the seminal HDCVI patents. “We recognise that customers want all equipment to be 100% multi-vendor plug ‘n’ play, rather than using single-source, proprietary solutions that may not work
together. Dahua’s strategy is, therefore, aimed to maximise the return on our investment in HDCVI and in doing so make the technology readily available to other manufacturers - even our direct competitors. “For these reasons, Dahua has decided to issue licenses under RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory) terms to other, reciprocating Steering and Manufacturing Members of the HDcctv Alliance. Dahua’s policy is as follows: semiconductor manufacturers implementing the HDcctv AT 2.0 standard independently are asked to pay a license fee on a RAND basis, while HDCVI licenses for implementing the HDcctv AT 2.0 standard are open free of charge to authorised equipment makers, per the HDcctv Alliance Members I.P. Agreement to which Dahua are a signatory. We look forward to collaborating with our partners in the HDcctv Alliance to further accelerate the global migration to HD IP surveillance.”

THE BOTTOM LINE Securahomes acquisition trail continues Earlier this year, we revealed that domestic alarm technology company Securahomes was looking to invest more than four million pounds over the next five years, buying small to medium-sized alarm installation businesses that have an established or growing customer base. The company has now advised us that it has purchased three alarm companies based in Leeds, Bradford and North Yorkshire with further acquisitions currently in negotiations. Although the company was initially seeking acquisitions across the Yorkshire region, Securahomes Managing Director, Martin Mann, has been holding talks with London-based firms, which has now led the company to seek out firms based in North and South London.
Vivotek adopts HDMI standard Vivotek has announced that it is now an official HDMI adopter. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) technology is the standard for connecting high-definition equipment, such as HDTVs, personal computers, cameras, camcorders, tablets, gaming consoles, smart phones, and any device with an HD signal. With the development and prevalence of consumer electronic devices, seven manufacturers; Hitachi, Panasonic Corporation, Philips, Sony, Technicolor, Toshiba, and Silicon Image, gathered together in 2002 and established the consortium of HDMI to jointly define a digital interface specification for consumer electronics products. HDMI technology, which is capable of delivering clear digital audio and video signal via a single cable, provides end users with an HD experience, making the connection and transmission of all digital data easier. According to HDMI official statistics, more than 1,200 of the world’s largest and consumer electronics manufacturers have adopted HDMI connectivity. Steve Ma, Executive VP at Vivotek, stated: “We are now facing an irresistible shift from the analogue to digital generation. A common standard for ensuring digital data transmission and communication is exceptionally important. Vivotek is pleased to become an official HDMI adopter. By adopting the standard, the usability of our products will increase tremendously.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Gerry Dunphy, Event Director – Security and Fire, for IFSEC International, the largest event for the security industry, bringing together the entire security buying chain in one place. What can Installers gain by visiting IFSEC International? IFSEC International is an opportunity to keep pace with the latest products and technologies on the market. Staying ahead of the curve in this fast moving industry is crucial to standing out in a competitive market place, which is why we have dedicated testing areas where installers can gain expert advice on the latest tools and techniques. IFSEC International really is a destination that caters for multiple needs under one roof, visitors are even able to benefit from free training that happens onsite where they can learn from the industry leaders in person. What have been the most significant benefits of moving IFSEC International from Birmingham to London? Relocating the show to the Capital city has opened up even more opportunities for our visitors than ever before. Attracting more exhibitors and industry leading names from across the world means that installers are able to test out an even wider range of products. IFSEC International taking place in London has meant that the show has grown and we’ve been able to include dedicated installer zones on the show floor. It’s important that we are always looking for new ways to keep the event fresh and reflect what the market needs. What additional incentives can you bring to the show to attract more inspectorate approved Installation companies? This year we launched the Security & Fire Installer Live feature area which included The Tool Zone from Anglia Tools, The Garage which featured the latest vehicles from VW and The Networking Bar. In 2015, we are set to expand this and introduce even more testing areas from a broader range of suppliers. Installers will be able to get hands-on with the latest kit and get a deeper understanding of how products work before investing. Business expansion is also rife and we’ll have advisors present in 2015 to give guidance on the most effective methods to grow. IFSEC International is also a good opportunity to keep an eye out for future talent and we want to help nurture this. Engineers of Tomorrow is a competition that takes place live on the show floor where young engineers and apprentices battle against each other for the most accurate system installations. More details will be released soon about the 2015 competition and how you can enter your team! How can Installers realise the benefits of the other show sectors such as Fire and Safe Cities? We have recognised that installers are looking to diversify into other markets, and the co-located shows running alongside IFSEC International offer the opportunity to identify new business areas that may not have been previously explored. As the show takes a more combined approach with co-located events such as FIREX International, this will provide installers with expert information and guidance on how to install and maintain sophisticated fire alarm systems, which can be integrated into the existing security and building management systems. Exhibitors at both IFSEC International and FIREX International are world leaders so the depth of advice and guidance available is truly formidable. Time spent at both shows is not only valuable for their business advantage but will help their professional development and potential to provide an even better service to their customers.

Security managers central to cutting energy costs According to the research conducted by IFSEC Global.com on behalf of Assa Abloy, it was found that a head of security’s role has evolved in the age of ‘smart’ buildings and now sees it as a priority to implement security solutions that consume less energy. Research demonstrated that heads of security departments strive to minimise carbon emissions to ensure greater energy efficiency, as it becomes commercially important and buildings become ‘smarter’. Adopting automated temperature detection and other environmental changes and computers calibrating air conditioning and heating accordingly – heads of security departments now strive for greater energy efficiency as well as protecting staff and assets. Around a third of survey respondents using traditional wired access systems were unaware that wireless systems consume much less energy. The survey canvassed the views of facilities managers, heads of security, installers and integrators.
Security locks catch criminals Multipoint locks have played a major part in a Warrior security door system which foiled an armed robbery attempt in Birmingham by trapping the culprits as they tried to make their escape from a jewellery shop. The incident, which was caught on CCTV and featured in the BBC programme ‘Caught Red Handed’, demonstrated the attack-resistant qualities of Pickersgill-Kaye’s multipoint locks and the two high security performance interlocking doors manufactured by Warrior Doors. When the silent alarm was triggered by the quick thinking owner, the store filled with a thick vapour making visibility impossible. One robber found the button to open the internal door to the exit, but when his fellow assailant got through the door and it shut, they found themselves imprisoned in the airlock area between the two Warrior-made doors. Helping to trap the robbers in the shop was Pickersgill-Kaye’s HS170 three-point lock for access control systems, which has an automatic deadlocking function with a 25mm bolt throw and high security cylinder guard. Despite repeated and frenzied attacks on the doors and locks, which had been mortised in to help provide a visually appealing look for the retailer, the two robbers were unable to force their way out of the airlock area before Armed Response Police Units arrived on the scene.

Staying safe - and cool! With outdoor temperatures at their highest it can be tempting for employees to stop wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), which often becomes uncomfortable in hot areas, but according to Slingsby there are now more products than ever before to help workers stay safe and cool at work. As part of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations, employers must provide appropriate clothing and equipment whenever there are health and safety risks that can’t be controlled in other ways. Lee Wright, Marketing Director of Slingsby explains: “The summer months often present a challenge where PPE is concerned because it can be tempting for workers to take off hard hats and high visibility or protective clothing in order to cool down. Employers have to accept that employees don’t like wearing clothing that is uncomfortable or ill-fitting and ultimately PPE is completely pointless if staff aren’t going to wear it. “When buying PPE, we always advise employers to consider the materials the product is made from, the style and fit as well as the overall design. There are a huge range of materials to choose from that are designed to keep the wearer cool and dry while being tough and long-lasting. However, in some cases it may be necessary to offer employees more than one brand or style in order to cater for everyone and it is often beneficial to include key members of the team in the decision making process when buying PPE.” Lee adds: “Many workplaces are also introducing incentive programmes and safety committees that encourage employees to look out for colleagues and speak out when they see potentially dangerous activities or people flouting rules surrounding PPE. These types of initiatives can have an immediate impact on both safety standards and PPE.”

Trading with the new MD ryl Jones has recently been appointed to the role of Managing Director of Assa Abloy Security Solutions, with his predecessor David Wigglesworth heading up the new specification division of Assa Abloy UK. Eryl was previously the company’s Commercial Manager and so has extensive experience and knowledge of the trade sector including builders’ merchants, OEM, architectural ironmongers and locksmith channels and his team will now have increased focus on developing its relationships and offering for the trade. Speaking on his appointment, Eryl said: “Traditionally we have always had a very strong product portfolio, with brands such as Union and Adams Rite. Over recent years we have been adapting to the increase in projects requiring a total solution, leveraging the combined strength of all our brands and products. We considered the time was right to create a separate specification offering and division where this market could be fully explored.” Consequently, the creation of the division has led to a renewed focus on core trade customers and one of the things Eryl is keen to progress in his role as Managing Director is realising the full potential of brands and defining a product portfolio that helps customers win business in new markets and create new revenue streams. So is the trade market more suited to your product range than the commercial/domestic market? According to Eryl the company’s trade customers serve both the commercial and domestic market. For example, Union’s core range of mortice locks is frequently used on social housing contracts but are also suitable for commercial buildings.
E
Eryl Jones
This month Assa Abloy Security Solutions appointed a new MD and announced its decision to focus solely on trade customers. PSI got the exclusive interview
“Over the years we have led many of our product developments with the desire to make our customer’s lives easier” 14
Projects Some companies are finding that their future business can be enhanced by offering a projectled approach rather than being seen as ‘boxshifters’, a move that Eryl sees is essential for the Security Solutions divison. “Our specification team is already involved in a number of projects,” he told us. “We recognise that each safety or security challenge is unique and we work with our customers to design and build solutions that meet their needs. Having Assa Abloy Security Solutions, as one point of contact, allows us to leverage the combined strength of all of our brands and their product portfolios. Essentially, our team can advise on a number of alternatives for projects, according to need and budget. Our brands’ products have been used within a number of sectors, including healthcare, education and commercial projects, which have given us the knowledge to
understand the rigours and demands of different environments. We have a number of large projects in the pipeline in London and are looking forward to showcasing our skills.” Feedback One of the benefits of dealing directly with installers is the feedback that manufacturers can receive for existing systems and new product launches and upgrades. Eryl has already experienced this. “Over the years we have led many of our product developments with the desire to make our customer’s lives easier,” he says. “For example, Union’s original StrongBOLT British Standard 5 lever mortice lock was known to improve ease of installation and recently a number of installers fed back to us that they would benefit from having its features across a wider range of products. So, we extended the range; now installers can save time when fitting locks to all projects, to bathrooms, to front doors, using features such as its easily reversible latch, which allows the handing of a door to be changed simply and quickly. “With some of our products we have made ‘how-to’ videos, to offer installers step-by-step instructions to make their jobs easier. This can be seen with our Eximo panic device video, illustrating that the Eximo range also has a number of features that can save time on construction sites.” Eryl hopes that working more closely with trade customers will give the company more insight into how it can improve its products further and continue to save installers time, so they can complete jobs faster and therefore improve their profitability. Brands Eryl states that one of his biggest successes at the company so far has been his part in offering solution driven business support for customers, with the launch of Assa Abloy Security Solutions in 2011. Union, Adams Rite, Assa, Trimec and Pemko are no longer brands managed in isolation and can be reached by a single point of contact. However, those individual brands have heritage and their own clear positioning in the market, as well as a clear focus on their own specific vertical markets. “I am proud to continue to maintain and invest in our brands individually, including our oldest heritage brand, Union,” concludes Eryl. “We continue to manufacture many products from our UK factory in Willenhall and this is something we should be proud of achieving in such a competitive market.”

Take the pledge he Wedge Pledge campaign aims to raise awareness of the common occurrence of fire doors being wedged open, rendering them useless in the event of a fire. Doors are one of the most important fire safety features in a building and also, sadly, one of the most common dangers highlighted by fire inspectors. Research carried out by Fireco showed that in 64% of premises visited by the fire service, fire doors were found to be wedged open. Neil Purssey, Managing Director of Fireco, says: “I see fire doors being wedged open on a daily basis in a range of different buildings including shops, gyms, restaurants, office buildings and blocks of flats. If you spot a fire door being wedged open by a door wedge, bin, fire extinguisher or anything else please get your camera out, take a snap and tweet it. We want to unite the nation and put a stop to this dangerous practice.”

Fireco has launched a national social media campaign called the ‘Wedge Pledge’. PSI caught up with MD Neil Purssey to find out more
If you spot a fire door being wedged open by a door wedge, bin, fire extinguisher or anything else take a snap and tweet it to @fireco with the hashtag #wedgepledge
Wedging open a fire door can prove devastating, as the case of the Rosepark Nursing Home in South Lanarkshire highlighted 16
Insurance Not only is wedging a fire door a dangerous thing to do it can also result in some problems for the company involved if a fire does occur. “It is quite possible that in the event of a fire an insurer would be unlikely to pay for all damages when the business is found to have propped numerous fire doors open,” says Neil. “Insurers are acutely aware that wedging open fire doors can, and has, caused chimney effects where people have lost entire buildings. Conversely, if used correctly, the majority of fire doors will hold a fire in a room for 30 minutes by which time the Fire & Rescue service will be on site.” As far as Neil is concerned there is only one person who is most at fault if there is a breach of fire safety in a building: “There is only one guilty party,” he says, “and that is the ‘Responsible Person’, generally deemed to be the owner, occupier or employer. However, the ‘Responsible Person’ can put measures in place to assist them. For instance, someone else can be nominated to be a ‘Competent Person’ for the premises. This person can be sent on fire safety training courses and delegated day to day fire safety management. When people are trained correctly, they are aware of the potential dangerous consequences of wedging fire doors.”
No surprise The high figure (64% of premises visited by the fire service had doors wedged open) does not surprise Neil at all as he frequently sees fire doors being wedged open. In fact when he relayed this statistic to fire services in the UK, they all agreed that they expected this figure to be high and confirmed this was an issue in the majority of properties visited. So does this high number of doors being wedged open mean that there is a requirement for more fire safety awareness training in buildings among its occupants? “There is always room for more training. However, it is not necessarily the frequency or length but the quality of training which is important,” explains Neil. “Experience in the fire service does not automatically qualify you to teach fire awareness. I would always advise properly checking the credentials of those conducting the training sessions. It is vital they have a full understanding of the Fire Safety Order (FSO) and an intricate knowledge of the specific features of the building in question.” Best practice All fire doors should be closed in the event of a fire. This is usually achieved with a self-closing or free swing device. Fire doors are installed to protect the safety of building occupants by preventing the dangerous spread of smoke and fire, they provide a protected route to get out of the building. Fire doors are a vital part of the building’s fire strategy, once they are wedged the safe egress of occupants cannot be guaranteed. Wedging open a fire door can prove devastating, as the case of the Rosepark Nursing Home in South Lanarkshire highlighted. A fire broke out at Rosepark in a cupboard on 31 January 2004 and ripped through the building. The Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) conclusion listed a catalogue of precautions that could have helped prevent the fire becoming so destructive. One of these precautions was for all bedroom doors to have door closers and smoke seals fitted to them. Installing a free-swing device on each fire door will allow the door to be safely kept open, but rest assured that the door will automatically shut when a fire alarm sounds. Fire doors are an integral part of a building; they save lives and protect property. If you see a fire door being wedged open, I urge you to see this as an opportunity to discuss an easy-toinstall, fully compliant solution.

INTERVIEW
A DEDICATED APPROACH arl Pardoe is the UK and Ireland Regional Sales Manager for March Networks. He has over twenty years’ experience in the electronic security and CCTV industry having held senior roles within some of the industry’s most well-known organisations, including ADT, Stanley Security (formerly Niscayah) and Tyco (formerly Sensormatic), where he ran a number of large retail accounts, primarily in the multimedia sector. He joined March Networks in early June 2014 and we caught up with him after two months in the role.
K
This month we speak to Karl Pardoe of March Networks about trends and the non-security benefits of IP surveillance systems
As a recent appointment at March Networks how are you settling in, especially after a baptism of fire at IFSEC? Most importantly for me, the new products we launched at IFSEC (the 6700 Series Hybrid Network Video Recorders and the Edge 4e Encoder) have been well received by the market and have shown that we have technology for any application. In terms of the show itself and my ‘baptism of fire’ I haven’t actually worked an exhibition for over ten years prior to this year so I had to work extra hard to get through the physical aspect of the event. The show itself was great for March Networks and not just for the UK market, which is obviously my main focus, but from a European perspective too. How have the last twelve months been for March Networks? The company has been doing very well and we recently announced European market sales figures for Q1 2014 that are 78% year on year higher than 2013. In less than four years we have been involved in some major acquisitions and as a result we have been focused on ensuring our internal reorganisation has been completed. At the end of last year, March decided it was time to focus on building the European operation and particularly the UK, hence my appointment. Me being in place allows us to react quickly to tenders and specifications and my local knowledge of the UK sector has proven valuable already following the interest we had at IFSEC. With me coming onboard our existing client base has a new point of contact and gives us the
18
ability to respond very quickly to enquiries from the UK and Ireland. So there is a renewed focus on the UK? Yes and it is a two-fold focus too. Firstly is the commercial element of what we are trying to achieve in the market, which is to triple our revenues, but secondly there is brand awareness work that needs to be done. In the past March Networks has had a good UK presence, however without having a dedicated person on board there was a lack of continuity in the way we were seen. Are you seeing any trends in the market? From a product perspective in the UK we still have a lot of analogue cameras and the main trend of recent years in which the industry is moving into the realms of networked security is still going strong. In terms of current trends I think you need look no further than the projects that are now being commissioned. Over the last few year we have seen a number of budgets being put on hold, thus slowing down the number of new projects coming on board, but today those budgets are being released and the projects are going live. People were obviously still doing business during the recession, we have a strong market in the UK, but spending was often being cut or held back. I have definitely noticed this situation changing recently and the prospects for next year are extremely encouraging with the sizes of new projects increasing and being more innovative. Another trend I have noticed is that the people we are talking to are more knowledgeable than before. The buyers and specifiers of security equipment are more IT literate and the procurement side of the market is seeing the influence of IT departments getting involved. A few years ago I would say that there was not such a good understanding of networked security and IT systems as there is today and this makes our job much more interesting. How do you think the industry has changed since your early days in the sector? Since I first came into the security sector I think the most striking change has been in the level of professionalism in the market. In that I mean that the overall quality of the systems and companies involved in the market has risen. Twenty years ago we had more of a disparity between the top end and the bottom end of the surveillance sector; today this gap has closed. In addition it was quite common for

SMOKE DETECTION
manufacturers to be launching products that they thought were right for the market without asking the installers and end-users what they actually wanted. The whole industry has now become more ‘blue chip’ and along with all of the mergers and acquisitions we have had, the quality of the products and the expertise of the manufacturers is much higher than before. We still have many of the same individuals as we had 20 years ago, but the way in which we do business has vastly improved. As a company you don’t just promote systems for better security but also for the supply of business information. How important are the nonsecurity features of surveillance? It was an entirely conscious decision for us to promote the benefits of surveillance systems in terms of the Management Information (MI) features as it is crucial to our development path and product offerings. In the US we have had a huge level of success in showing how companies can improve margins in terms of Return on Investment (ROI) thanks to the additional benefits from having a surveillance system installed. The data that is created is of interest to marketing departments and other groups within an organisation which means that the camera systems can be purchased using input from a pool of resources, not just the security budget. We are a security company, but the MI focus of the products allows greater usage of the technology to bring a range of benefits to an organisation. For installers this means that they can add more features to a business proposal other than better security, which in turn, can help them get more contracts accepted. As a network security company would you say that you are converting more people to IP from analogue or upgrading current IP users? There are two ways to answer that question. Overall, our global focus is to convert people to use IP however if you look at the market in the UK and Ireland our hybrid solutions of IP and BNC connections is where we see the growth over the next twelve months. We also have an entirely IP oriented VMS systems which allows us to develop the software and information that the technology can provide with additional plugins, integration etc. So all in all we see opportunities in both converting to IP and upgrading existing systems. Obviously the rate at which the conversion to networked security should take place is not the same for all projects. There are installers in the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
UK who are servicing huge analogue systems and for them to try and convert all of those applications to IP would be very hard, especially with all of the new cabling that would be involved. If someone has a system that is working well and the image quality is good then they can look at a hybrid approach which offers some of the benefits of IP and so, essentially, take a longer term view to converting to IP rather than doing it all in one go. What do you think the role is for technologies such as HD-SDI? I think it a very good technology, but it is not something that we get involved with. Yes, it offers the benefits of HD down a coax but it doesn’t address the issue of IP because at some point you need to sit the signal on the network. It has some great features but I tend to think of it as a ‘halfway house’ between analogue and IP and it does require some investment for the equipment which at some stage may need to be upgraded again. What does the future hold for the security industry? In the short term I do not expect that there will be wholesale changes in the market and the halls of IFSEC will remain fairly similar to what they were this year in terms of new technologies. The IP push will continue and so will the number of projects coming on line and there will be more cameras with higher resolutions being launched. I do not think that the surveillance market is yet at saturation point. If you look back ten years we needed the development of IP to be a much needed new and exciting factor because the market was almost stagnant and I feel that the move into networking and integration is helping to keep the industry buoyant. The IP revolution has been a very good thing for us all and with the country coming out of recession we should see a period of growth for the whole security sector.

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at some of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.
Cloud-based access control system launched
Periscope camera for tactical surveillance MEL Secure Systems has launched an HD-SDI Periscope camera. Designed for law enforcement and broadcast applications in a range of mobile or fixed covert surveillance operations, the camera includes an HD-SDI interface to transmit uncompressed surveillance images in 1080p resolution at full frame rates over coaxial cable making installation a quick and trouble-free process. It uses a Sony day/night camera module with image stabilisation and transmits HD images at high speed to be received at distances of up to 100 metres without requiring repeaters. With Pelco-D telemetry RS485 compatibility, the camera has PTZ functionality with 360˚pan and 60˚ tilt with continuous rotation. A motor drive system allows precise positioning control even when panning at high speed and, because there is no latency, operators can follow specific events with a PTZ joystick, even at the most extreme zoom settings of 30x optical and 8x digital. According to MEL Secure Systems: “This new HD-SDI camera can be easily concealed in drainpipes and lamp posts or built-in to vehicles to deliver high quality images from a range of covert locations to meet individual tactical surveillance requirements.” www.melsecuresystems.com

Norbain has launched VOLO, a new way of delivering access control solutions. By combining controller technology with GSM connectivity and cloud hosted software, installation time, infrastructure and hardware costs can be significantly reduced. According to the company, with scalability from one to over 10,000 sites, without the need for local servers or infrastructure, the most challenging and diverse of access control systems can be delivered cost effectively, wherever they are located. As well as no requirement for a PC, the GSM GPRS connectivity means that a site does not even need local or direct connection to the internet, making it ideal for remote sites. System enhancements and upgrades can be made instantly, without the need to visit a site. This ensures the latest version of the software is always in operation, even across multi-site end users. In the same way, system programming, adding users, card issuance, configuring groups and access rights can all be performed from any supported webbrowser from anywhere in the world. Hosted services are provided through an annual charge as opposed to a higher up-front software investment with upgrade or expansion charges later on. Additional licences are needed only as required and when the system grows. www.volo-access.com

Shock sensor to add flexibility Pyronix has released details of a new accessory for the Enforcer two-way wireless range. The combined magnetic contact and shock sensor – the MC1/SHOCK-WE – gives added flexibility from one product, being designed to be placed in positions where it is necessary for a shock sensor and magnetic contact to be present, such as doors and windows. Tris Young, Marketing Manager at Pyronix, said of the release: “The Enforcer two-way wireless security system has been designed with installers in mind at every step of the process, and the new MC1/SHOCK-WE continues in this ethos. This 2in1 sensor can be learned to the Enforcer separately, allowing separate shock and magnetic contact transmissions of alarm signals to be sent individually but simultaneously to the panel. Flexibility is further enhanced through being able to learn the contacts individually, if for some instance either the shock or the magnetic contact is not required.” www.pyronix.com
Manage your premises via remote access CDVI is launching the ATRIUM-100 access control system to the market in September 2014. The system allows a user to manage their premises, via the internet using a smartphone, tablet or web browser. ATRIUM’s embedded web server gives instant results, and provides control of devices as well as critical reports. Developed on the back of the ATRIUM-10, the capacity has increased from ten to 100 readers, but includes more as CDVI’s MD, Alan Walker, explains: “The power and speed of the internet, along with evolving IP technology, has created the acceptance that it is ok to “manage on the move”, and ATRIUM-100 is simply taking its place alongside other product sectors which offer remote management technology.” The increase to 100 readers satisfies the capacity requirement and also the demand from installers for features such as CCTV and alarm integration, interlocking, email alerts. www.cdvi.co.uk
Biometrics custom kit released The Custom Kit from ievo lets users incorporate a host of options alongside the standard ultimate and micro fingerprint readers including card reader integration, increased template capacity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) among others. This allows users to effectively create their very own bespoke biometric access control system to suit the needs of specific projects. Customers can now tailor their own readers as they require. For instance, if there is already a card reader at the site, customers can replace the card reader with options that let the biometric readers use most pre-existing cards. They can also provide a biometric template on the card, reducing their reliance on a central database. For users wanting to use identification mode (1:N search), ievo offers a standard capacity of up to 10,000 fingerprint templates and can be expanded to 50,000 templates. By using PoE to power the control board, reader installation becomes faster, easier and more costeffective. Wireless or Bluetooth communication can be used instead of a LAN. Now, one control board can handle both an ingress and egress reader reducing overall hardware and installation costs. The unit can be fitted with a Two Line Screen, ideal for time and attendance applications in which users want to see the date and time they scan in and out. These additional functions will not change the look of the standard ultimate and micro fingerprint readers, so users can enhance their access control system without physically altering the product. www.ievoreader.com

Eaton’s Security business
I’m Matthew Phelps, Managing Director of Eaton’s Security business. Working Smarter is a new series of columns where, with colleagues across the industry, we examine the key issues affecting professional security installers. Shaping the Future
System for enhanced integrated HD IP video AD Network Video has introduced its high definition IP video surveillance solution, Virtual NVR, which combines unlimited scalability with three tiers of distributed storage. The Virtual NVR solution distributes video storage across single or multiple locations, with IP cameras recording and storing images on the in-camera server. These will carry on recording if network outages occur as the devices operate like standalone systems, resulting in no single point of failure. The evidential recordings are easily accessible locally or from control rooms via a single user interface and are exported in compliance with police and home office guidelines. Recordings can be archived and managed from a central location driving greater efficiency and flexibility in locating and retrieving video from multiple sites. www.ad-networkvideo.com/virtualNVR.php
Two box network cameras announced Vivotek has announced the launch of its two new professional box network cameras IP8155HP and IP8165HP which offer 60 fps at 1.3Megapixel resolution and 60 fps at 2-Megapixel resolution respectively. Both cameras are designed with WDR technology; IP8165HP delivers WDR Pro, while IP8155HP is equipped with the even more advanced WDR Pro II, which provides extreme visibility under high contrast environments with a four-shutter capture method. Combined with 3D Noise Reduction Technology, IP8155HP and IP8165HP are able to capture video under low-light conditions and reduce bandwidth from sensor noise. In order to control the iris with precision, both cameras are designed with a P-iris lens with its built-in stepper motor. Through close integration with the camera firmware, the lens is able to keep the iris opening at an optimal level at all times. In order to help installers to adjust the focus of the cameras more easily, the RBF (Remote Back Focus) system is being introduced on both cameras, ensuring precise focus adjustment. In addition, incorporating the EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) function allows the image to be free of turbulence whenever physical shaking of the camera is detected. www.vivotek.com
For this month’s PSI panel discussion I joined other industry colleagues to examine the skills shortage. It’s an issue that continues to cause widespread concern and rightly so. The gap between how many people we have, and what we need, is widening all the time. Having listened to business owners, senior managers, installation and service engineers across the industry, it is obvious there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. That said most people believe apprenticeships and similar development schemes for young people are essential. Based on my own experience I believe in this approach and have implemented of this type of programme within Eaton’s Security business, and quietly supported training schemes outside our business. According to the National Apprenticeship Service, 72% of businesses report improved productivity as a result of employing an apprentice - and there are wider benefits too. A report by City & Guilds found that UK businesses could be boosted by £4.37bn by 2020 through the creation of an additional million apprenticeship places. It is clear that the education system must do more to meet this need. The bridge to employment needs to be broader too. As a youngster my options were university or a job. Depressingly, that doesn’t seem to have changed. I didn’t go to university, but I was lucky enough to work for people who fed my appetite for knowledge, as well as experience. Today, the exciting transition from school to work must include vocational choices that lead to qualifications that are valued by employers, employees and customers alike. In my opinion the biggest challenges we face involve improving the perception of the industry, and promoting it as one that can offer genuine career opportunities. One way to do this is to convey the increasing rate of change in our sector. The security industry is undergoing a massive transformation and this year is the first that the installation of IP systems will outnumber analogue. Likewise, security’s role in the Internet of Things – the ability of an individual device to ‘talk to’ another device and to use data that is obtained without human intervention – will only make us more IT-focused. We must wake up to the new possibilities that are all around us. Intelligent residential and commercial buildings utilising converged IT networks are not the stuff of the future – they are happening now. With the right skills, the next generation of security installation professionals have a golden opportunity to play a major role in the implementation of IP technology. If we are to attract high calibre young people and reduce the skills shortage, it’s up to all of us to make sure that the potential rewards for joining the industry are clearly communicated.

he Keylex 2100 from Securikey is an example of the growing number of mechanical code locks on the market today. The heavy duty K2100 series is available with knob or lever action operation for use with mortice deadlocking latch or mortice sashlock. A further version is compatible with rim lock panic bars for escape door applications. The lock comes as a complete assembly with the sashlock or latch as applicable. The unit provided for evaluation was a K2100L lever action (to both sides) double action deadlocking latch in satin chrome finish. Construction of the mechanical code door furniture is very solid and has been designed for high traffic applications where several hundred operations may be required daily. Consequently the product is somewhat bulkier than some similar products on the market. The unit is suitable for mounting on timber, metal, UPVC and composite doors and is supplied with good installation instructions that include drilling templates for door furniture, mortice latch and strike plate. Installation itself is a straightforward affair for anyone with basic lock fitting skills. Lever action units are supplied handed so this needs to be specified when ordering. Setting of the code should be completed before final fitting of the lock since the furniture has to be removed for this to take place. The code is determined by the orientation of the hooks within the external (insecure) lock furniture. Setting the code is straightforward although care needs to be taken when removing the back plate (matrix) so as not to take any hooks out with the matrix. The chosen code is selected by reversing the hooks as required such that their copper coloured end is not showing. There are 14 digits (0-9 + A-D) providing in excess of 16,000 combinations, although the manufacturer generally recommends use of 3-6 digits only. The lock uses a double action deadlocking latch that locks every time the door is closed. From the insecure side, the code has to be entered to override the deadlock and retract the latch. Free egress is provided from the secure side. Operation requires the digits to be reset using the ‘Cancel’ button above the 14 digits. It is simply a matter of then pressing the allocated code buttons firmly followed by the ‘Release’ button found below them. This will enable the door lever/knob to be operated once only. As with other mechanical code locks, the buttons relating to the ‘code’ may actually be operated in any order. With the latch held back via the handle, the

lock may be set for ‘free’ operation via the thumbturn located above the handle on the secure side. The latch still engages each time the door closes but enables continuous operation of the handle from the secure side until such time as the thumbturn is returned to the normal locked position. A key override facility is also available as an option, although the cylinder is located on the base of the door, requiring the key to be inserted vertically to the underside of the lock furniture which looks a little awkward. The deadlocking latch assembly itself uses a nylon snib and nylon insert on the bearing surface of the latch bolt for smoother operation of the deadlocking mechanism. This begs the question as to how well the nylon will stand up to heavy traffic use. Several options are available such as rebate kits, coded entry/exit and escape door versions. Overall, the product is well made, feels very solid to operate and should give prolonged reliable use.

PRODUCT TEST The Risco RWX34S Smoke and Heat Detector is reviewed by the independent testers
he RWX34S smoke and heat detector has been introduced to complement the growing range of wire-free products from Risco. This unit combines two separate detection technologies to maximise both performance and applications for use. Designed for the domestic market, the RWX34S is compatible with all Risco wire-free systems. The detector is supplied with a surface mount quick release base, mounting screws, batteries and installation instructions. Installation of the RWX34S is a simple affair requiring only two screws to secure the base in the chosen location, the smoke and heat detector then merely clips into place with a clockwise turn. A locking pin is provided to ensure the unit doesn’t come loose. The accompanying instructions are clear and concise (if a little small for aging eyes) and include fairly detailed notes on correct mounting positions for the detector. Power is provided via two 3V Lithium CR123A batteries that mount under a cover on the rear of the detector and should give an operational life of around three years. Before powering the unit however, the method of detection needs to be selected via the three dip switches at the back of the unit. THE FOLLOWING DETECTION MODES ARE SELECTABLE: • Smoke Only • Heat Only • Smoke and Heat (OR logic) If smoke and heat detection mode is enabled, the position of the other two dip switches is ignored.

Photoelectric smoke detection Dual heat sensor for Fixed Temperature and Rate of Rise Built-in test button Compatible with all RISCO 1 and 2 way wireless systems
Smoke detection uses a photoelectric chamber and complies with EN 14604 requirements. Heat detection is via two separate sensors providing both fixed temperature and rate of rise detection. Our evaluation unit was tested in conjunction with the LightSYS 2 hybrid control panel but the product is compatible with all RISCO wire-free systems (both 1-way and 2-way). With the control panel in the RF learn mode, the batteries are placed in the detector and the tamper switch operated for a period of three seconds to send a write message to the panel which then displays recognition of the device. When activated the detector has an onboard sounder providing approximately 85dB at 3 metres away. There is a self-test button on the face of the detector which will activate both the onboard sounder and send an alarm message to the control panel. We tested the unit for a variety of mounting locations and operation modes. The RWX34S performed reliably for all modes of detection throughout our time with the product and at ranges significantly greater than are like to be experienced in most residential applications. The RWX34S combined smoke and heat detector is a welcome addition to the Risco wirefree range providing a new dimension to their residential products. The unit is quite compact, although perhaps a little deeper than common standalone detectors and manufacturing quality appears to be good. Dual detection technologies provide superior performance and true flexibility for residential applications. In this instance, one might say – one detector fits all.

PLUG AND PLAY AWAY F or the last few years we have been told that the growth of IP will eventually overtake the sales of analogue cameras and one day in the not too distant future all systems will be networked and analogue will be history. The problems with this statement are that there are still lots of people who like working with analogue technology and lots of users who get the type of surveillance they want from it. Some people have no need for HD, analytics or remote access, so why switch (or migrate as it is called)? Furthermore as long as the analogue market remains popular in certain quarters, some manufacturers will carry on producing cameras and installers will continue fitting and maintaining the systems. Of course networked technology today is big business – who knows what would have happened to the electronic security industry without the introduction of IP? – and there are scores of companies trading solely on the back of IP CCTV. This means that for businesses to thrive they need installers to fit IP technology rather than analogue, which is why the major marketing push of the most visible companies in the market are talking about IP. But how does this sit with installers?
Analogue business Many of you will have some long-established and probably extensive contracts for the maintenance of analogue systems and we have been told for some time that one of the main reasons why the IP side of things has not yet blown analogue out of the water is the lack of networking knowledge amongst UK installers. Both factors could therefore lead to a bit of a slowdown when it comes to the ‘migration’ angle, but for how much longer can you rely on your analogue business to keep you afloat? It is widely considered that the encroachment of the UK surveillance market by IT installers will only serve to make the analoguecentric security installer obsolete so some element of IP installation service could be seen as vital as the world continues to embrace networking. In the past the so-called education gap between the traditional security installer and IP technology has existed with a feeling that networking is somehow more complicated than the existing analogue format and with some validity too. Sometimes new technology is promoted
www.psimagazine.co.uk
in a manner that shows its features and benefits, but in a confusing manner because the person/company showing the product is expecting a similar level of understanding from the audience. In marketing speak it’s called overpitching the idea – when you talk to your potential customer in the same way you would a company colleague. A simple analogy would be modern televisions; if all you want to know is what channels you can get, why would you be interested to hear how satellites work? Early exponents of IP were certainly guilty of creating some confusion. More confusion is created by the various options that allow people to have a form of IP CCTV without changing all of the components of their original system. In no way are these technologies inferior (and their popularity certainly shows that they are very well thought of by installers and customers) but when there are numerous options it can muddy the water a bit. Remember the days when we had BSB, Sky, cable, OnDigital etc? Too many options, means too many decisions. So while HD-SDI, encoders and various other technologies all offer alternatives and genuine benefits, some people view them as a temporary halfway house to full migration – usually those who work in IP. Again, it is worth noting that CCTV should be fit-for-purpose, so going ‘full IP’ is not a requirement for every application and the ROI on fitting an encoder rather than ripping out the whole existing surveillance system to begin again from scratch is obvious. However IP surveillance solutions have not been left undeveloped. In the last few years we have begun to see technology branded as ‘plug and play’, meaning that all you need to do is plug something in and you have completed the build. Unfortunately (again let’s blame the early IP promoters) while the hardware was plug and play, the software behind it definitely wasn’t. There was still plenty to do in the program screen (GUI)
Genuine plug and play systems make IP migration easy, so what’s stopping you? It’s certainly not the quality of the technology now available

with locating ports and naming of each camera etc that it was not uncommon to see eyes glazing over in product demos. Yes it was much easier than previous systems but still required a good understanding of networking, licensing and software management and for some people plug and play was a bit more plug and pray in those days even though the idea had already been mastered by some companies operating in the access control market and with the cheap IP security systems found in high street retailers. But then along came the game changer in the form of a company that had traditionally been an OEM of systems with their own-branded range of simplified professional IP technology. The DirectIP launch from IDIS (latest system extensively reviewed in last month’s PSI) caught the attention of the market when it first launched in early 2013 because it required no software knowledge, programming skills or network experience. You really did just plug the cameras into one end of the cable and the NVR into the other and the system automatically did the rest. Of course you could then go on to tweak the system as desired, but this simplification of the process made everyone sit up and take notice. Very swiftly other manufacturers joined in with their own launches and the true plug and play sector was born. The cameras and NVRs vary but the premise remains the same – for the untrained security installer who has never fitted IP technology before, all he/she needs to do (once the cables have been fitted) is put the cameras up
and plug them in. This ‘Zero Configuration’ (as Samsung Techwin calls it) means that the world of networked security is no longer a closed shop to the analogue-centric installer bringing with it new features that you can promote to customers – not all of them security related either. For example, business intelligence data such as footfall, hotspots etc are all valuable to various sections within a company and may well allow surveillance budgets to be increased as other departments contribute to a contract in recognition of the information they can gleam from analytics.
Expanding the system When technology is simplified in such a manner as plug and play offers it does not deal with the still prevalent education gap, so if you need to fit something more expansive in the future you are technically still left out in the cold when it comes to networking, but have no fear, R&D never sleeps. At IFSEC this year we saw manufacturers exhibiting plug and play as the basis of complete systems with new cameras, analytics and improved functionality so while the systems are still simplified they now have higher specs and more features. This means that there may be no need to upgrade to ‘proper IP’ from your plug and play technology in the future anyway. Companies like IDIS, D-Link, Samsung Techwin, Videcon, Vicon, Y3K, Pelco by Scheider etc will not sit back and leave plug and play alone now that they have developed systems for the market, they will continue launching new and more advanced equipment as resolutions, bandwidth, analytics etc all improve with time. It would therefore seem that unlike some technologies, plug and play will not be seen as a halfway house to ‘going IP’ over the coming years. In fact with the developments we’ve seen so far with plug and play, plus the weight of some of the major companies operating in this sector, it may well be the way that much of the IP market evolves in time to come.

PoE
PoE AND POWERING PROJECTS I n days gone by it was not considered a good idea to run data cables anywhere near power cables. The result of doing so was interference or even data corruption, however those times have changed. The development of IP security systems has resulted in a number of benefits for the installer and the end user both in terms of ease of installation (see the feature on plug and play in this edition), analytics, image resolution and in the case of cabling, cost reductions. When you consider what you can do with just one cable; audio, video, power and telemetry in just one line the benefits over traditional methods are clear. For example, in previous years it was not uncommon to have to fit four cables (in the case of a PTZ) with one cable for the unit, one for the audio and one for the power. The cost implications of this may have limited the amount of work that you could pitch for, however the reduced cost of being able to transmit power and data along the same wire, or a dedicated wire make overall project costs much lower. What’s more, PoE, and it’s more power supplying alternative PoE+, are simple solutions meaning that it is cheaper to buy the materials and only give you one point of potential failure compared to a multi-cabled application – which in itself is time saving as you know which cable it is that has failed. Furthermore, PoE is not only a CCTV solution it is a function of a range of products including access control systems and locking mechanisms so in new builds, in particular multi-tenanted apartment buildings it offers an easy solution for simplified power distribution and installation. Of course there has always been the elephant in the room when it came to pitching IP as saving money on cabling for existing applications, as in most cases the wiring is already in place, so what saving is being made there? PoE typically only comes into play if there is no existing power supply at the new camera position. Otherwise, it would be a retrofit, i.e. remove the analogue camera, and power the new IP camera with the existing power supply cable that once powered the analogue camera position – therefore no need for PoE. Then again you ‘d be hard pushed these days to find a company without a network cable running around the site. PoE and PoE+ do offer real benefits to new builds and there are a number of manufacturers that have spent a lot of R&D time and money to develop systems and bring them to market, but is it the ideal choice? Obviously installers and specifiers should be pushing the technology that

best serves the customer’s needs and as we’ve outlined already, in order to benefit from PoE, analogue-centric customers are not going to request a complete refit to take advantage of it. However new projects that are taking advantage of the integrative nature of the latest security systems will look upon PoE as a great benefit in speeding installation. There are always other ways to do things and with power supplies there are alternatives to PoE, such as power injectors, and various reasons for doing things differently. Reasons for using other systems could be cost-effectiveness or constraints due to a remote location so it may even be necessary to combine different methods to achieve the desired result. It should be remembered that PoE is an established standard in the industry while other upcoming technologies are not yet at the level that PoE is at in terms of meeting requirements. For remote locations, for example PoE may not be the best choice with solar panels and UPS systems running on alternatives to diesel such as methanol fuel cells providing successful results for certain conditions. PoE is not the only solution, but as it is a feature built into a lot of today’s cameras it is an option that presents itself to the fore for consideration at least.
The right choices When it comes to pitching for a contract then, IP offering PoE benefits may or may not present a more viable alternative to continuing with analogue as the cabling for that is already in place, but it will definitely bring down the cost of

a new build install. But if things start to get a little competitive when it comes to contract proposals it is worth remembering that the choice of cabling itself can help you keep your prices down, but this is a Catch 22 situation. As distributors traditionally sell high-end and low-end cables, as an installer, when you are up against other contenders for a contract you need to install whatever cable you can to make the deal costeffective for you. If you use cheap cable however there are pitfalls. Cheap cable cannot carry the signal for HD cameras because the signal is carried down the copper, not the dielectric, and as a result you’d be trying to run it in most cases down copper coated steel (as used in cheaper cable). With around 75% of the UK using cheap cable the transition is going to be difficult! When using cheap Cat5 cable you’ll invariably find that the twists are not long enough resulting in Grade B product costing around £20-£30 a box compared to £70 a box for good quality cable. Better quality cable will not only carry the HD signal but it tends to be more resistant to cracking and with cheaper cable there will be noise on the line. Therefore the rule is to stick to buying decent cable – never buy cheap cable because if you do you’ll be creating so many problems for yourself
down the line. Specifying cheaper cable just to win a contract is not a good economic decision. Distance is one of the main misunderstandings that exists surrounding PoE and power supply. Ethernet technology has a distance associated with it to be able to send a perfect signal. A lot of people in the security sector are of the opinion that you can only go 90m with a cable run. However if you have switches, an NVR and a camera you can usually go as far as you want. And note, it is often said that all switches that you use in a PoE system have to be PoE switches, which just isn’t the case. You would only require PoE switches at the camera end.
The future As we have reported and you have no doubt seen in the marketplace, the IT installer has started to take an interest in the installation of CCTV systems. With the increase in networking and the likelihood that any premises you go into these days will have a network already in place, the PoE option (fitted to many of today’s cameras) can present a financially appealing angle. It’s not for every project but if it suits and you get the cabling quality right, PoE should be worth considering as a first option, especially as we go further down the path of widespread IP usage.
THE POWER BASICS PoE explained by Axis Communications Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that integrates power into a standard LAN infrastructure. It enables power to be provided to the network device, such as an IP phone or a network camera, using the same cable as that used for network connection. It eliminates the need for power outlets at the camera locations and enables easier application of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to ensure 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. PoE technology is regulated in a standard called IEEE 802.3af and is designed in a way that does not degrade the network data communication performance or decrease the network reach. The power delivered over the LAN infrastructure is automatically activated when a compatible terminal is identified, and blocked to legacy devices that are not compatible. This feature allows users to freely and safely mix legacy and PoE-compatible devices, on their network. The standard provides power up to 15.4W on the switch or midspan side, which translates to a maximum power consumption of 12.9W on the device/camera side – making it suitable for indoor cameras. Outdoor cameras as well as PTZ and dome cameras have a power consumption that normally exceeds this, making PoE functionality less suitable. Some manufacturers also offer non-standard proprietary products providing suitable power for these applications as well, but it should be noted that since these are non-standard products, no interoperability between different brands is possible. The 802.3af standard also provides support for so-called power The PoE powered Axis M1025 classification, which allows for a negotiation of power consumption between the PoE unit and network camera the devices. This means an intelligent switch can reserve sufficient, and not superfluous, power for the device (camera) - with the possible result that the switch could enable more PoE outputs. PoE works across standard network cabling (i.e. cat-5) to supply power directly from the data ports to which networked devices are connected. Today, most manufacturers offer network switches with built-in PoE support. If an existing network /switch structure is in place, customers can benefit from the same functionality by adding a so-called Midspan to the switch, which will add power to the network cable. All network cameras without built-in PoE can be integrated in a PoE system using an Active Splitter.

ast month we reported on the potential problems a skills shortage could bring to the security industry. Going into a ‘trade’ seems to be an unfashionable choice with the IT sector appearing to be taking many of the graduates and engineers that could have previously entered the security sector. So what can the industry do to make it more attractive and how can you recruit the real talent?
L
John Davies – TDSi Finding the right skills for your business can be a challenge, however as well as picking the right talent it is also very fruitful to nurture fresh talent for your company. Like most businesses TDSi looks to recruit the right people for the job, be it technical skills, wider business needs or administrative expertise. However it has become obvious that there is a vast gulf of untapped talent in graduates and school-leavers, as well as more experienced people in the job market and this offers a lot of opportunities to fill many skills shortages. We have benefitted greatly from the technical expertise and enthusiasm of graduates we have recruited. We are based in Poole on the south coast and there are a number of nearby universities which specialise in engineering and science subjects and offer a pool of welleducated and motivated graduates that bring the latest ideas and training to a business. Equally, we have a number of apprentices who have left full-time education and are seeking experience and training in a vocational direction. This is very gratifying not only because we benefit from keen young recruits and can train them in the real-world skills that we need, but also because it helps young people join the business world - gaining practical experience and a better understanding of not only the core business or department requirements, but also of how the broader business world works. To tackle the long-term skills shortage I believe it is worth encouraging interest at an even earlier stage. As well as TDSi running an ongoing Work Experience programme for local schools, this has also led me to participate in the Student Mentoring Scheme for Sixth Form students at The Bourne Academy in Bournemouth. As a mentor we help students to develop their professional as well as academic and life skills and to show them the opportunities that await them. I feel that raising the aspirations of young people will not only benefit them, but will also help to improve the overall calibre of young recruits on offer in the job market. Another area which we passionately support is training of our existing staff. Be it sales

TALENT SPOTTING training, accountancy or customer service, we support our employees in gaining new qualifications and skills. We have been accepted on the Growth Accelerator programme run by The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and this provides us with matched funding for some of the management training we are conducting for our employees and new hires. Again this not only benefits them individually but also adds value to our business and benefits our customers through the enhancements to service that result.
What is the best way to manage the skills shortage in the security and fire industry?
Robert Bruce – FSJ The perception by most is that there are plenty of people looking for work and that they are desperate for a job. The reality is far from this. Due to the short term nature and fast paced world we live in, employers are looking for a ready-made employee who is able to slot straight into their business. Unfortunately this person doesn’t exist within the security industry, pertaining to the growing gap in skilled talent. The best way to manage the problem is to retain your current staff, give your employees reasons to stay, not leave. Research carried out by the recruitment website monster.co.uk found that more than half of people who are currently looking for work but are in employment want to move because they feel undervalued. To avoid this from happening, make sure to benchmark your business and your overall offering against the market and implement a staff retention strategy. It’s not all about salary; there is a lot more employees want to take
from their job such as a clear set of goals and objectives, responsibility and the ability to 35

develop their skills. If you find yourself struggling to find new recruits, start to think outside the box and consider what other measures could be taken in order to find the ‘perfect’ recruit. There are a number of people we see coming into the industry that just need some training in order to progress within their role. For example, an exmilitary recruit can offer a variety of skills; they just need someone to offer them a break. If time is invested in people, they will be able to learn and progress, turning them into capable installers or engineers. Alternatively, you could recruit an apprentice. Employing an apprentice provides employers with a bespoke talent pipeline for the future. The recent 100 in 100 apprenticeship scheme devised by CSL Dualcom focused on placing 100 apprenticeships in roles across the industry within 100 days. The scheme has resulted in more than 1,300 young apprentices being recruited into various jobs in the security sector.
Declan Garrett – Security Institute
As well as considering what an apprentice could learn from an established team, employers should consider what skills are absent from their business 36
Post 9/11, crime, and the fear of crime, have focused organisations on managing security as a priority. Defending against loss requires security practitioners with the necessary skills. However, the security industry suffers from a skills shortage. Organisations are finding it difficult to recruit skilled staff. A lack of defined roles, competencies, and qualifications impacts on attracting the best candidates. Security is not viewed as a viable career option and lacks structured career pathways and progression opportunities for new entrants and those already employed. There is poor engagement in training. In many cases training is viewed as a necessary evil. Research indicates a large percentage of practitioners lack qualifications specific to their role. Change may occur if industry stakeholders come together for the common good to manage the skills shortage. Stakeholders include professional bodies, educational associations, employers, and clients. Professional bodies need to develop recruitment and training standards and maintain and enforce them. They also need to act as a learned society promoting security as an academic discipline and develop a new body of knowledge to support skills development. Stakeholders need to support this. Employers need to hire qualified personnel. Clients need to ensure they are not accepting lowest end bids and expecting the highest rate service. Lowest
end bidders lack the recourses to develop employees or compensate them if profit margins are low. Employees need to engage in continuous professional development and career driven. However, clear progression routes with competency frameworks and qualifications aligned to a qualification framework is required so they can achieve this. Many organisations are struggling to find new recruits who are suitably qualified. The industry can only attract the best candidates and harness its best talent when stakeholders come together and commit to participating in skills development. For those struggling to attract find new recruits, they need to become an employer of choice applying human resource management strategies to recruit and retain the best available candidates and harness talent.
Simon Banks – CSL DualCom
Apprenticeships are key to the recovery of the UK’s worsening skills gap. The REC Youth Employment guide has reported a 90% increase in skills shortages in the last 18 months alone. The largest gap has been identified as mid-sized employers look to fill technical and skilled job roles, a demographic the security sector accommodates. Employers need to act now before the gap widens, risking an over-stretch of existing skilled teams. Introducing young enthusiastic individuals into an experienced team can increase the future performance and competitive edge of any business. For as little as £8K per year, apprentices can offer a home-grown future talent pipeline. As well as considering what an apprentice could learn from an established team, employers should consider what skills are absent from their business. Young people are arguably more acquainted with new technologies and social media – an area often under-exploited within many businesses. To get started either contact the National Apprenticeship Portal or Skills for Security.
Julie Kenny – Pyronix In the UK, unemployment has fallen to its lowest levels since 2009, but companies are still experiencing a skills gap. being filled from outside the UK in a short term fix, but this structural gap needs a long term solution with our industry sector and government in partnership. In looking to address the issue of skills in general, the government has backed several advertising campaigns, monetary grants and marketing efforts to try and increase the appeal of apprenticeships, and show young people that this is a valued career path. The ‘traditional’ apprenticeships are still the ones that see the most uptake: Plumbing; Plastering; Brick Laying; Electricians. However the 100 in 100 Apprenticeship initiative run in the Security industry – and spearheaded by Simon Banks – has been extremely successful since its launch some 3 years ago, and indeed has proved to be the catalyst for the security industry to foster this young, vibrant pool of tomorrow’s talent. However, there needs to be a concerted effort from government and our industry to create the relevant infrastructure to build on this momentum. Colleges and the private sector have developed opportunities for apprentices to learn the installation trade, but there is not enough provision. An improvement could be made for there to be flexible learning combined with work experience to allow even more potential installers the opportunity to join our industry. Companies that invest in their people are proven to be more successful, and in my view, companies need to offer training, qualifications and support. Without that the skills gap will continue to widen as companies all compete to attract the limited numbers of skilled workers in the industry. It is very difficult for very small organisations with very limited resources, but most companies with more than a handful of employees, can invest more in their own staff. My advice to those struggling to find new recruits would be to start from within; Is there anyone in the organisation that shows the aptitude for learning and do they want to progress? Can small organisations work together to provide an environment for one or two young staff that offer both the opportunity to learn and work? Organisations in the industry can make a positive impact on skills by managing the talent they already have in their organisation, identifying the people who want to learn, and investing in them. Investing time and money into training and skills for employees will reap benefits; increased loyalty to the company, a happier workforce and better skills are all things organisations can
benefit from. Ultimately this is a short term, localised fix to a structural problem, but this will also create further upward momentum to help drive a strategic solution to the long term problem in the security industry.
Matthew Phelps – Eaton’s Security Business
With IP becoming ever more present in security products and systems, our industry is dependent upon attracting and retaining individuals with a diverse range of skills; typically, those skills found in IT professionals. Many other industries are looking for similarly capable people, and I am not sure we are doing enough to win that race for talent. Unless we do more to make our industry more attractive to people who will drive our sector forward, show strong career and personal development, and hopefully create the new security businesses of the future, we will not realise the opportunity for us all. We’re not alone though. Over 75% of UK businesses believe they’ll be severely affected by a skills crisis in the next three years, according to a recent report by The Prince’s Trust and HSBC. One of the main reasons this sector is experiencing this problem is that too few companies see the value in apprenticeships as a recruitment option. This again is a widespread problem and, according to the UKCES Employer Perspectives Survey, 85% of employers do not offer apprenticeships. This is a missed opportunity - and must be addressed if we are to even scratch the surface of the skills shortage problem. More must be done to encourage employers to consider taking on apprentices and I hope that the government’s Employer Ownership of Skills project, and the proposed reforms to the apprenticeship system produce the desired results. For companies looking for new recruits, the decision to take on an apprentice can be a difficult one. Some perceive it is as cost prohibitive, or believe the process is too bureaucratic, or that there aren’t any relevant apprentice frameworks for their business. Others feel that the early stage of economic recovery is a risky time to commit to an apprenticeship scheme. However, despite these issues businesses of all sizes should consider the real and long-term value of apprenticeships – they are a great way to fill skills gaps, increase productivity, and develop the loyal and competent workforce companies need to be competitive.

MEET THE INSTALLER This month we talk to Gary Trotter of Hadrian Technology, Sunderland Name: Gary Trotter Job title: General Manager at Hadrian Technology Time in security/fire: 18 years Location: Sunderland Areas of expertise: Hadrian Technology design, supply and install high quality CCTV systems across the UK and Ireland; for both commercial and domestic clients. Accreditations: CPD courses including training with specific manufacturers and working through technical feedback after jobs. We have a Private Security Authority (PSA) licence which means we can supply systems in the Republic of Ireland and have fulfilled the requirements for it to be renewed for the coming year.
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from manufacturers? Over the years we’ve developed a very close working relationship with Videcon and we’re now the biggest installer of their Concept Pro CCTV range in the country. Our new partnership with Avigilon means we buy their products directly from Vancouver and we have a similar relationship with other manufacturers we work with. Is third party accreditation beneficial to you? Third party accreditation introduces an unnecessary tax to installers applying for contracts. Many utility companies now acquire security solutions through a third party which means they avoid employing in-house staff to deal with the security set-up. When companies outsource security contracts to a third party, suppliers have to pay a fee to tender, and it becomes more about who can pay rather than who can do the job well. There also seems to be a strong focus on whether the security company tendering can tick all the health and safety boxes, rather than deliver the best service. External agencies are often more concerned about covering their own back rather than delivering the most effective end result. I personally think third party accreditation is a lazy and exclusive way of procuring security contracts. It isn’t good for competition in the security industry because competitive, growing and innovative security companies will not be able to compete with the larger, more established businesses if the emphasis remains on who can afford the fees needed to apply.
40
What would be a typical project for you? A typical job for us would be a commercial job with around 32 cameras, but they vary enormously considering the majority of our installations are bespoke designs that we create to meet the client’s needs. One of our recent projects was the design and implementation of an HD-IP system with 198 cameras to cover the interior, the exterior and the perimeter fencing of a retail distribution centre. The system integrated Avigilon PT2 cameras with Concept Pro’s NVRs and we worked closely with data and fibre specialists to ensure the network infrastructures delivered completely. We incorporated Cisco switches to make sure the system data all came to one point - despite the network size and amount of data being collected and compressed. If the switch isn’t correct the playback slows down and the latency (time delay) of footage increases. We always think that a final system is only as good as its weakest point. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Any trouble recruiting installers? As we come out of a recession, well-trained, good employees are in high demand so the cost of quality installers, contractors and specialists is rising. In order to maintain best practice we prioritise training our existing team in partnership with manufacturers, which keeps them up to speed and progresses them on to the next level. We have recently partnered with North American manufacturer Avigilon, who offer HD network video management software, megapixel cameras and access control products. They are coming to visit the Hadrian team for some training in the next few months.

Our partnerships with Mobotix and Bosch mean we will have similar sessions with them later this year, ensuring our installers have the most up-to-date knowledge on the equipment they’re using. Like every business we run the risk of investing money in training staff that may then decide to leave us. But without CPD, we would be left behind, so we place importance on it throughout our annual calendar. As CCTV installation becomes more and more about data management and video analytics, being up-to-date on manufacturer’s products, uses, and features makes our knowledge invaluable to clients.
What is the security industry’s biggest myth? ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) compliance is supposed to make cameras and systems compatible, but it doesn’t always work. Manufacturers who supply SDKs (Software Development Kits) are the way forward in my opinion. For our end users, the biggest myth is that CCTV is very expensive. Most of our installations pay for themselves within only a few months, so clients can see a return on their investment quite quickly.
“Without CPD, we would be left behind, so we place importance on it throughout our annual calendar”
What would make your job easier? If manufacturers delivered products that do what they say they do, that would make everything much easier. Many manufacturers include additional features to position themselves above competitors, but they need to get the basics right first. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? No If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? There’s a horse running next Saturday...

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Clients sometimes expect you to be everywhere and anywhere at short notice, but such is the nature of the modern world. We recently considered hiring a chopper to get the whole team somewhere for a job - we always find a way to make things work! We also have to manage clients’ expectations of what the technology we install can do. Some assume a top of the range CCTV camera can cover all directions at one time, and others believe the most expensive system works for everything. It is sometimes hard to explain what the
capabilities of our systems are to a CCTV novice, but that is where our years of experience in the industry come in handy.

PRODUCT UPDATE 40x optical zoom outdoor camera Redvision has launched a 40x optical zoom RVX40-SERIES rugged PTZ and dome camera to replace the current 36x zoom model. The new retains the X-SERIES rugged, outdoor design. It is supplied ready to install as a dome, but easily converts into a ball PTZ camera by removing the dome top cover. The camera uses a ” CCD sensor with lowlight sensitivity and 670TVL resolution for clear, precise images. It has wiper, IR light and Dual Light (combined IR and white light) options. Night-time surveillance is enabled with IR or white light, ultra-efficient, LED illumination. The IR illumination allows covert operation, whereas the white light allows operators to identify, spotlight and track intruders. Each camera has 100 presets, 8 tours and up to 24 privacy masks, to meet application and legal requirements. The RVX40 camera’s 40x optical and 12x digital zoom enables long range scene surveillance. The IR version will provide illumination up to 100m and facial recognition beyond 30m. The Dual Light, IRWL version, also has a 100m illumination range in both light modes and will toggle between IR and white light on alarm activation, pre-sets or manually. The RVX40 cameras have a flat, toughened glass window for the camera view. This allows an optional, silicone wiper blade for removing water droplets and dirt. The RVX40 offers 360° continuous rotation and when pedestal mounted, is able to see above the horizon, ensuring no part of its video image is obscured by the camera casing. redvisioncctv.com

Extreme low light sensitivity The Autodome IP starlight 7000 HD cameras from Bosch deliver HD video images in extreme low light situations and capture moving objects in 720p HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second. The latest sensor technology combined with the noise suppression results in a light sensitivity of 0.052 lux in colour mode and 0.0103 lux in monochrome mode. In comparison, the Autodome IP starlight 7000 HD reportedly produces full colour images in the dark beyond the point where other cameras have turned to monochrome images. Where others show no image at all, it is described as being able to still deliver detailed monochrome images. The camera features wide dynamic range and backlight compensation technology to ensure that moving objects or those of interest are enhanced and can be easily identified in scenes with simultaneously bright and dark areas, which typically challenge standard cameras. To further improve the quality and relevancy of IP video images, both cameras also feature de-fog technology to dynamically adjust camera contrast settings to deliver images in scenes affected by fog, smog, mist or other low contrast scenes. www.boschsecurity.com
Detection with fewer nuisance alarms Senstar says that its FlexZone can report fewer nuisance alarms while maintaining a high probability of detection. The ranging technology enables flexible zoning through software. It can detect and localise multiple simultaneous intrusions with three metre location accuracy. FlexZone supports 600 metres of sensor cable per processor, creates zones through software, and carries power and data on the sensor cable – dramatically reducing infrastructure costs. “Not only do end-users benefit from the reduced installed cost of FlexZone, but installers save time with FlexZone because of pre-installed openings with cable glands on the processor, convenient USB connection for set-up and a single software set up tool for all phases of installation,” said Mark Novak, Managing Director at Senstar UK & MENA. www.senstar.com

Self-made (with a little help) Craig Williams’ story should inspire anyone looking to develop a career within the electronic security industry. It highlights how, if you are determined to do so, you can achieve your goals within a sector that values professionals who understand the need for best practice in the design and implementation of security solutions. ith no clear idea on what he could do to fulfil his potential, but knowing that he had an aptitude for all things practical, Craig joined an independent company which installed TV aerials and Sky satellite dishes. The company also dabbled in CCTV which Craig found particularly interesting. “I enjoyed being involved in the process of trying to understand exactly what the customer was trying to achieve from CCTV in order for us to be able to recommend the best combination of cameras and recording equipment which would be fit for purpose,” said Craig. It soon became apparent to Craig that the electronic security industry could provide him with the opportunity to prosper and he joined a small company in the West Midlands which specialised in the installation of CCTV, intruder and fire alarm systems. It was whilst he was at the West Midlands company that Craig’s appetite for learning accelerated. “During my five years there as an installation and service engineer, I gained considerable practical hands-on experience, but it became obvious that I needed to take on board a lot more knowledge so that I could fully understand what was needed to ensure that a security solution met, if not exceeded, the client’s expectations.” Entirely at his own cost and in his own time, Craig enrolled on a number of Tavcom training courses covering a wide range of subjects including Installation and Maintenance of Intruder and Hold up Alarms, Principles of CCTV, and CCTV Installation. Craig completed all of the BTEC accredited courses during 2008 at precisely the time that he had the opportunity to further progress his career by joining a newly formed Technical Design division of ADT. “It was here that I was able to put what I had learnt on the Tavcom courses to good use and I realised that I am at my best when I am

interacting with clients as to how they can get the best out of their investment in a security system.” Craig’s abilities were quickly recognised within ADT and he was selected to be part of a major projects team which was responsible for the design of large and complex multi-sited projects. In 2011 and once again at his own cost, Craig enrolled on two further Tavcom BTEC accredited courses. “I wanted to fill in what I regarded as important gaps in my knowledge and I knew from my previous experiences working with Tavcom that I would get extremely good value from their Practical Internet Protocol and Practical Access Control courses,” said Craig. “The completion of these two courses enabled me to accumulate enough points to gain an internationally recognised Integrated Systems Diploma, and gave me the confidence to think about implementing a long held ambition to establish my own consultancy. Craig fulfilled that ambition in February 2014 when he set up SEF Consultancy (www.sefconsultancy.co.uk), an independent multi-disciplined consultancy offering a wide range of specialist services from the surveying and specifying of security systems for small office, retail and residential environments, through to providing a complete project management service for multi-million pound tender based projects. Craig is looking forward to the future with a high degree of optimism. “I am pleased to say that I am receiving enquiries on a daily basis for my services. The good news is that there is no shortage of companies and organisations of all shapes and sizes who see the value in retaining the services of an independent consultant who, with the benefit of acquiring professional qualifications as well as hands-on experience, is able to provide expert, objective advice on security system best practice.” Commenting on Craig’s success, Paul Tennent, Managing Director of Tavcom said: “A key objective of providing professional training courses for our clients is to help them realise their full potential. We are therefore proud that the knowledge that our expert tutors have imparted to Craig has been put to such good use.” www.tavcom.com

Connections Hello again Well hopefully that’s the last of the storms and the increased levels of alarm and telephone calls that always accompanies such activity. Normally storms are pre-empted by emergency services withdrawing attendance in preparation for wider scale emergency response requirements, quickly followed by key holders refusing to attend as they have decided to drink copious quantities of alcohol and hunker down to get off key holder duties! Of course all of this adds to dispatch times as we are denied emergency service attendance and then we cycle through the key holders trying to get someone to attend. This is then followed up by the key holder calling us back requesting a call out engineer and then calling us back again (and again) because he hasn’t arrived or contacted them. For us it’s quite surprising when it is known there is a storm brewing that alarm installers don’t lay on extra callout staff for their customers, especially as there is an expectation that we are manning every available operating position answering phones and dispatching on alarms, which we do. It is therefore not surprising that ARC’s are moving toward either a totally automated service, or a selective automated service, for noncore alarm signalling. Today’s standards require an enormous amount of additional signalling to be sent to the ARC over and above unconfirmed & confirmed alarms, personal attack and fire. During adverse weather who actually needs to know at 3am that if they switch on their lights they won’t work? Do zone omits, fail to tests, low batteries, mains fails, single path comms fails, early to open, late to open, fail to close, GSM low and a myriad of other technical alarms really require operator intervention? Back in 1983 when we started, we received low battery, burglary, personal attack and very rarely fire and open & close signalling, albeit the false alarm rate was 2.9 per system per year! Monitoring fees were also £49 a year for two signals, £10 connection and £15 for each additional signal, whey hey I wonder what that would be now if it was index linked? The long and the short is that ARC’s (along with the rest of the service industry) are have to do a lot more for a lot less and the only way of doing that is to prioritise the important signals for operator intervention, automate the rest and attack poor performing CCTV systems, the latter being extremely labour intensive. This is something we have been very good at over the last 30+ years and why, when under the cosh of adverse weather conditions we outperform our competitors across our two centres in Manchester & Portsmouth. It’s not easy and sometimes even if we had 200 operators across the network, our service would not be at normal levels, but they are better than others. For example we use dedicated operators for answering alarm company lines out of hours and we prioritise those lines above our own.
Connect with the best of the best in CCTV and Access Control, analogue or IP with Pro-Vision. Instant access to over 60 of the leading brands.
We have been automating non mission critical signalling and driving the adoption of MASmobile by engineers to free up operators time to dispatch on confirmed alarms and answer phones, because if you’re being asked to do more for less there has to be change to working practices to find the time. And finally, because we are better than the rest, we are growing and attracting new business from our competitors, hence why we have taken on additional administrators and operators. Roll on the October hurricanes! Bye for now

SIL2 level fire detection range Hochiki Europe has announced the introduction of a new fire detection range that is independently evaluated and certified to meet the requirements of Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2), with respect to the IEC 61508 Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-Related Systems standard. Hochiki Europe’s SIL2 range includes smoke sensors, multi-sensors, multi-heat sensors, manual call points, sounders and sounder beacons, and a variety of detectors. These devices will be of interest to those responsible for configuring life safety systems in hazardous environments such as the oil, gas, petrochemical, manufacturing, transport and process control industries. A SIL rating applies to an entire system and is used to reduce risk and improve safety through a formalised and quantifiable methodology. It does this by measuring safety system performance and the probability of failure on demand – a value that indicates the likelihood of a system failing to respond to an
emergency event. There are four integrity levels associated with SIL, in ratings 1-4. The higher the SIL level, the lower the probability of failure on demand and the better the performance of the safety system. It is important to also note that, in the vast majority of cases, as the SIL level increases, so does the complexity of the system. www.hochikieurope.com

Fire alarm management update Drax Technology has launched an updated version of the AMX alarm management platform. AMX 2.17 now supports a wider range of fire control panels and adds many new feature enhancements. AMX 2.17 is now Windows 8 compatible and supports virtually all leading fire control panels with the addition of the ADT MX/ZX, C-Tec, Kidde Vega and Morley DX Connexion systems. It provides a real-time view of the status and performance of all connected devices and enables faults to be rapidly identified across the network without having to physically check each remote control panel. The system also allows individual devices to be isolated remotely in the event of building work or other activities that occur in a specific zone to eliminate the incidence of false alarms. The system’s synchronisation capabilities have also been enhanced to improve operational efficiency. AMX 2.17 now allows clocks in remote fire alarms and connected devices to be synchronised to ensure that reports and event logs are more accurate. Also, when multiple AMX workstations are connected
as part of a group, they are synchronised to ensure that a single data set is used to simplify future reporting. www.draxtechnology.com

PIRs and laser technology eradicate false alarms
Hackney brewery increases security Delta Security has installed an alarm system for The Five Points Brewing Co in Hackney, increasing security levels and helping to support the brewery management with its ongoing expansion programme. Emmanuel Ross, Operations Manager for the independent micro-brewery says they needed to be confident that the investments they make to growing the business are protected: “As well as the assurances necessary for our insurance company, being a small, but growing business we needed an alarm system that we could be confident would be reliable in protecting our facility and stock, and flexible to allow for cost-efficient upgrades when the times comes to expand further.” The upgraded alarm system includes a user-friendly intruder panel that can be programmed to call several different keyholders; the coverage of the PIR sensors has also been increased to ensure all areas of the site are protected. In line with the client’s requirement for a future-proof alarm solution, the new system is fully upgradable. The Delta Security head office is a short walk from The Five Points Brewing Co and its locality was important to Emmanuel: “Being part of a community is a big part of our company ethos and as well, being socially responsible, it is also convenient in the event we have any questions. Dave Holland, Installations Manager at Delta Security is very pleased to be partnering with a local success story: “Independent breweries are very popular, with more and more people caring about the providence of what they eat and drink. It’s fitting that we have been able to continue the theme and provide good value security services so local to the brewery.”

A council depot in Dudley experiencing up to 80 false alarms in 45 minutes when opening every morning, has practically eradicated the problem by reviewing the existing sensor locations and deploying Optex laser detection technology. The site is protected by a CCTV system triggered by infrared motion detection sensors, but was suffering numerous false alarms due to staff arriving for work and congregating in front of the building, and from wildlife along the canal footpath that runs along two sides of the perimeter. Historically, intruders had broken through one of the perimeter walls and stolen central heating boilers and piping, and also climbed up on to the roof and entered the building through the skylights. Eighteen Redwall long-range passive infrared detectors (PIRs) were installed throughout the car park and the perimeter of the building to protect the elevation of the storage warehouse a few years ago. The operational needs of the site had changed but the sensors were still in their original location and the false alarms generated when staff were arriving to work were causing a headache for operators at Visual Verification’s remote monitoring centre in Timperley, Cheshire. The location of the existing sensors needed a rethink as well as the mix of detection technologies to specify to avoid staff triggering the system. Replacing the traditional volumetric sensors protecting the building, a Redscan laser detector has been installed on top of the building in a vertical application, covering the facade and a one-metre area from the wall, working in conjunction with two cameras. Creating a virtual wall, the laser sensor only detected people standing next to the building wall and ignored those further away. This resulted in the false alarm rate falling by 80%.
Heartlands Hospital chooses IP-video intercom Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, the flagship hospital for the Heart of England NHS Trust, has chosen Castel to supply an IP-video intercom solution throughout its large modern hospital estate. Recently updated in 2000 to a 737-bed capacity, the hospital is still being developed with new and upgraded buildings, services and security systems. System installer Lyrico recommended an external intercom solution from Castel’s CAP IP product range to the Hospital Trust, one that could easily be added to the hospital’s IP backbone network. The hospital required an intercom system that was future-proof and which had a range of intercom stations to provide solutions for different areas of the estate. A final requirement was that the solution needed to be able to interface seamlessly with an IP telephone system in the future. This made Castel’s open SIP solution using the CAP IP intercom range ideal for this particular project. CAP IP Intercoms were installed as Help Points within the new multi-storey car park and also at the automatic barrier gates. Two intercoms were also installed at the goods delivery gates. All of the calls are directed to the CAP IP master handsets in the on-site security control room. In total, 17 audio and video intercom stations have been installed.

Gothenburg Court rules in favour of video security Sony’s video security system has created a more secure environment for the Administrative Court of Appeal in Gothenburg which has traditionally only used physical security, and is now opting to use video security for the first time. Recently, the organisation has lacked the necessary resources to place guards in the areas where the public is granted access, which consists of several unsupervised rooms and communal areas. Lately, incidents have occurred that created the need for the organisation to implement an improved surveillance solution. The challenge therefore, was to monitor all areas and get a complete overview of the premises and waiting rooms accessible by the public. The implementation was performed by the security supplier Gate Security over a five month period. The complete solution consisted of several SNC-EM630 Sony Mini Dome cameras and client stations. Sony’s SNC-EM630 Full HD cameras have been integrated with the Court’s security alarm system, which prompts alarms in the case of any faults in the CCTV equipment (e.g. if a camera gets covered
or obstructed). Any alerts are sent directly to the security staff and alarm centre, ensuring that the solution provides full security for both employees and visitors alike. The implementation of the new security system was completed within the set time schedule and budget. The new system meets every demand set by The Swedish National Courts Administration and The Administrative Court of Appeal itself. Gate Security will continue to maintain the system with regular checks twice a yearand whenever needed. “Previously we’ve had problems with various angles, nooks and pillars in the premises, as our reception staff had problems seeing some public areas. But the newly installed security solution practically covers the entire premise,” said Magnus Corneskog, Technology Specialist at the Security and Service Department at The Swedish National Courts Administration. “The courts need to handle cases efficiently and with legal certainty. Therefore it’s very important that the working environment feels secure for both its staff and its visitors. The camera surveillance equipment has a very important role here. Not only does it work to protect individuals and collateral, but it also works as a deterrent that minimises unwarranted behaviour within the courts,” said Magnus Corneskog, Technology Specialist at the Security and Service Department at The Swedish National Courts Administration.

Collaboration leads to CCTV vans Together with Securitas, Dallmeier has developed a surveillance concept in which vans have been fitted with video security equipment. Many of these versatile CCTV vans are already on the roads throughout the UK and Ireland, in the service of the retailer Marks & Spencer as well as other operators. Many potential offenders are discouraged by a clearly visible video system, so illegal activities can often be prevented before they are even committed. If an incident should take place, however, CCTV systems can be used to provide an accurate reconstruction of the sequence of events and to identify the individuals involved. But suitable mounting sites are not always available at the locations where video systems are needed. Or it is not worthwhile to set up a permanent installation because the need for heightened security only exists at certain times. Now there is a solution for these situations: CCTV vans. These vans can be deployed for use at precisely the time and place where they are needed. Dallmeier and Securitas have developed and successfully implemented this concept together. Each CCTV van is equipped with four high definition dome cameras, which are mounted on the four sides of the van. The vehicles also carry a mobile PTZ camera mounted on a hydraulic mast that can be extended to a height of 15m. The PTZ camera is equipped with a 20x optical zoom, enabling more distant objects to be observed in detail as well.
Nationwide improves scanning with X-Ray system Totalpost Services has supplied a mail and parcel X-Ray security screening device into one of Nationwide’s flagship processing centres. Supplied into the centre in Swindon, the machine has been used primarily for screening incoming mail as the centre receives around 20,000 items of mail per day. Nationwide previously used a cabinet style
60
The images from the cameras are recorded on a VideoNetBox, which is built into the van with minimum space requirement. The PTZ cameras can be controlled via a laptop running management software from Dallmeier, which also allows live images and recordings to be analysed conveniently inside the van itself. Remote analysis can also be carried out from anywhere in the UK or Ireland via a 3G network. And sequences of interest can also be downloaded remotely. In this respect, the PRemote-HD function – a routine developed by Dallmeier with which HDTV streams can be displayed even with low bandwidths – is very useful. The capability of analysing via iPhone or iPad, made possible by the “Dallmeier Mobile Video Center” iPhone app, affords even greater mobility and flexibility. Special transcoding is used to optimise the image data for the iPhone and at the same time ensure a high frame rate. The app includes the intuitive operation typical for iPhones, including multitouch zoom. The individual cameras are displayed in a list with preview images for maximum viewing efficiency. Whether as an extension for a permanently installed video system or as a standalone system, the CCTV vans have already proven their value in many situations. At concerts or demonstrations, in car parks or to prevent the theft of copper from railway and power supply facilities: the CCTV vans serve as an effective deterrent and provide invaluable help in the investigation of incidents. security screener but have upgraded to this Astrophysics XIS 6040 conveyor X-Ray machine in order to enable operators to see more clearly the contents of incoming mail. Additionally because it is a conveyor style machine it has increased screening efficiency. Commenting on the screening ability of the machine James Carter, Operations Team Manager, of Nationwide said: “The imagery of the screened items is far clearer than our previous machine - this gives staff peace of mind when dealing with large volumes of mail.” The processing team has also identified a secondary use for the XRay screener and now use it for screening paperwork for metal, mainly staples before putting items through their scanning equipment. This is a process that was previously done by hand and enables them to increase the longevity of the scanning equipment.

Italian retailer benefits from EAS solution Checkpoint Systems has announced that the hypermarket retailer Bennet has completed the roll out of electronic article surveillance (EAS) loss prevention solutions in their stores in Italy. The solution involves the installation of 1,000 P20 EAS antennas from Checkpoint’s EVOLVE solutions – as well as radio frequency (RF) tags, Alpha high-theft solutions and point-of-sale deactivators – in addition to the rollout of an RF source-tagging programme aimed at increasing on-shelf availability, improving open merchandising while reducing labour costs and inventory shrink. As part of the partnership, EAS labels will be applied to the merchandise during the manufacturing process, resulting in the items arriving in-store shelf-ready. This enables store associates to focus on customer-centric activities rather than attaching security tags, resulting in
increased sales and enhancing the shopping experience. The programme is being run through Checkpoint’s dedicated Source Tagging Evaluation Centre, which considers technical, packaging and supply chain requirements when recommending the application of the most suitable EAS labels to the different types of merchandise. The P20 antenna offers a slim profile with improved visual impact at point of sale and strong detection capabilities. The model is also part of Checkpoint’s ECO range, which helps to reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared with previous models. Luigi Forgione, a Director of the Bennet Group, said: “We are delighted with the final installation and look forward to extending our collaboration with Checkpoint, a company which shares our goals of being at the forefront of the retail industry by offering the greatest variety of products, ensuring our stores’ security, in a new, modern and welcoming manner.” Per Levin, President and Chief Sales Office for Merchandise Availability Solutions for Checkpoint Systems, added: “ Item level EAS protection programs deliver a strong and proven ROI, and Bennet is now joining a growing number of retailers around the world who are exploiting this option much harder to increase sales and profits in this still subdued economic environment.”

New access control system for Irish Ferries 911 Security Systems has installed door controllers, proximity readers and cards from Access Control Technology (ACT) as part of a marine access control solution with 3,500 users. A unified system is operating internationally across 40 doors, with ferry staff at the ports of Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and Cherbourg, France, using their access control cards in both countries. The equipment is at buildings run by Irish Ferries, and crew with appropriate access rights can simply present their credentials at the ferry company’s facilities in Ireland and France. The access control system relies on ACTpro 1030e proximity readers and ACTpro 4000 door controllers. The readers are slim-line (a concern at any transport hub where space is limited) and they support Wiegand/Clock-and-Data output. Crucially, the readers’ IP67 rating offers protection against ingress of water, salt and other contaminants likely to be found at a port. The harbour terminals are also using ACTpro 4000 two-door controllers which are designed for high-traffic volumes where changes to the cardholder database are a regular occurrence. Networkable up to 4,000 doors via door stations, the ACTpro 4000 can manage up to 60,000 users. These controllers excel in data reading and
encoding which allow ACT’s control software to function alongside an organisation’s core personnel/enrolment system. ACT’s access control management software is giving Irish Ferries a system with a hierarchy of access rights for staff members according to job profile. The database allows distinctions to be made between crew responsibilities, areas of onboard and land-based activity as well as basic criteria such as seniority and likely shift patterns. User data and access privileges are recorded on ACTProx Duo Cards which can be used on a proximity or mag stripe basis. Paul Keegan, Operations and Sales Manager at 911 Security Systems, said: “Timed zones and role-specific access groups have been set up in both Dublin and Cherbourg with distinctions being made between office areas, workshops and the secure side of the port which includes turnstiles. ACT’s anti-passback measures give additional protection and all the controllers have individual IP addresses.” He continued: “In addition to securing the two harbour sites, the end-user can generate reports on staff movements across vast quayside areas as well as the logistics of employee activity in the passenger terminals. There is potential for using these movement reports for time and attendance purposes.”
