CONVERGING BUSINESSES The development of IP has led to a convergence of security and IT and with it, brought a world of new opportunities

imes are changing for the professional security installer as diversification into business sectors with IT-based technologies is becoming more commonplace. In addition the security market itself is experiencing a migration of integrators from the IT/AV sector into the market as security systems are becoming increasingly IP enabled. IMS Research published a report in 2012 entitled “IP Trends in Security – A Survey of Systems Integrators and Installers” which found that around 80 percent of North American systems integrators and installers purchased some IP-based video surveillance equipment from IT distributors, and that this was expected to increase to 90 percent of systems integrators and installers by 2015. This finding also rings true in the UK as an increasing number of IT distributors are looking to add video surveillance products and other security technologies such as access control to their product ranges. This is good news for the traditional IT integrators who are also looking to enter the video surveillance industry, as they will already have the established relationships with their IT distributors. It also means that those that previously installed IT equipment now have new areas of opportunity available to them in the form of network based security systems which will allow them to pitch for whole infrastructure builds including the security side of things – up until now the domain of the security installer. And what about the traditional security

installer? Surveillance security in the UK has long been analogue based and indeed this technology still has a major presence in the market, but the growth of IP technology in terms of CCTV as well as in other disciplines is moving the installer in the direction of networks and integration. In the same way that IT installers are benefitting from the new opportunities offered by security technology, the security installer is also seeing new avenues of business with the widening of product ranges brought to the table by distributors. An example of how the installation business is changing can be seen by wandering into high street premises such as coffee shops or modern pubs which feature large monitors on the walls showing sports, free wi-fi, networked tills with EPOS, building management systems (such as heating/cooling control) and CCTV. The majority of which can all be controlled via a single control point or monitored remotely to check on stock, staff and security. In the past this may have involved the tendering of a number of contracts for each individual factor, but today this could be taken care of by just one company and just one supplier. Diversification into new markets, but still working for the same clients is good business for installers of any equipment format it also allows the potential bonus of being seen to “add value” to the contract by offering additional services above and beyond the original spec, such as using CCTV cameras to monitor customer flow, areas of threat or access control. This move is also driving integration. For the past few years equipment vendors have been talking about integration as though it has been with us for a while, however it has not been until recently with the widespread adoption of IP in areas such as CCTV, door locks and building management has the true integration of security and premises technology been realised. Today, one touchscreen on the wall can control a multitude of applications via one network. Multitenanted buildings can be made safe and secure using IP and each apartment can have the kind of sophisticated management system only recently deemed the plaything of rich celebrities. Not only can the systems change the room temperature, open doors for visitors and provide remote surveillance monitoring via a smartphone, they can call the lift and change the mood lighting – should the need arise. combine systems that would traditionally have been disparate is leading to new developments for all parties involved. Another change in the IP security involves how technology is purchased. A key finding from the report “IP Trends in Security – A Survey of Systems Integrators and Installers” is the influence IT managers have in the decision of which IP-based video surveillance products are chosen for a contract. IT managers were ranked ahead of other key influencers such as physical security managers, chief security officers and consultants in their ability to influence which IPbased video surveillance products are chosen. One reason for this influence may be the fact that IT budgets are typically larger than the associated security budgets. Instead of security managers buying an IP-camera and speaking with the IT department about how to incorporate it into the network, increasingly the IT department will buy the security equipment from their budget and incorporate the device into their network. This means that the distributor chosen for the security technology purchase in this scenario will likely be the one that the IT manager already knows which is why IT distributors are seeing growth in their security sales. The migration to IP-based video surveillance is firmly established and the question is no longer “will IP-based equipment sales overtake analogue equipment sales?”, in fact IMS Research forecast that 2013 would be the tipping point when world network video surveillance equipment sales overtake analogue video

surveillance equipment sales. Of course we have heard such predictions before and the date does keep edging on, but the answer to the earlier question is definitely sooner rather than later. The arrival of IP-technology has brought its own questions, and simultaneously changed the shape of the market place. The development of IP has allowed different combinations of traditionally separate systems to communicate via the network to present new opportunities for those looking to offer a complete service for their customers. It has opened up the worlds of security, entertainment, retail, transport, building management and more to installers of all specialities. Now is the time to develop and diversify by looking at new areas of potential and to talk to companies who have the expertise and product ranges to support you.

INTEGRATION IN THE RETAIL SECTOR In retail environments today, the use of integrated solutions can bring many benefits to the end user.

urrently, many of the individual components of a system are run separately with little or no interconnection between them quite often because they are installed from a variety of different companies with no common plan. There is no reason that an integrator fitting one of these systems cannot expand their repertoire to include the other disciplines. The most obvious modern component of a retail solution would be the EPOS or Electronic Point Of Sale system. This system takes the place of the older cost based till systems meaning you can put in more information about what you are selling and use it in more ways such as stock tracking and sale analysis. An EPOS till will typically nowadays have a touch interface meaning when coupled with a well-designed software interface use is simple. Finding products can be done through categories and be a quick simple process intuitive for any operator. Another method of input which we have all seen is barcode scanning which makes this even easier and has become a very popular method of date entry to the point that it is a must have item on most companies EPOS systems. With the progress of technology some EPOS software platforms have even gone Cloud-based, meaning that whilst still keeping your familiar hardware such as Toshiba’s well known EPOS terminals you can interrogate the data much more easily and use modern algorithms to look for possible fraudulent activity. All of this is, of course, fantastic. However, a till on its own will not give you all the information and proof you might need when trying to reduce shrinkage in a business

through staff issues, fraud or theft. This is where a surveillance system comes into the equation. Security installers will be well versed in the design and install of these systems as they are often installed into a retail solution but rarely tied into the EPOS system. This means that it is difficult and time consuming to search for small incidents related to purchases, mainly because the system design for surveillance solutions in retail is often one based around staff safety or capturing major theft and is not tied to the EPOS activity. When integrated to the EPOS solution you can quickly and efficiently lookup particular transactions and playback the surveillance footage for those transactions. If this is coupled with algorithms on your EPOS software from the modern software packages this makes looking and proving fraudulent activity much simpler. Now that you have two systems in place, the Network-based nature of a modern system means that your surveillance cameras don’t have to be used for just one purpose but can be used simultaneously for staff safety, fraudulent activity detection, theft deterrent and used intelligently with modern video analytics. The data stream from one camera can be sent to multiple systems without affecting the quality of the images you receive and by using the IT infrastructure you can even re-locate cameras throughout your system to deal with different times of the year and store layouts without massive re-cabling typical in traditional surveillance systems. Taking video analytics for example you can take a copy of the video stream from your camera

and analyse that data in real time. One possible form is facial analytics which falls into either analysis or recognition. These can be used for a number of different things which can benefit a retailer and allow them to work smarter in the currently difficult market. At its simplest systems like biomarketing can detect sex and age group which can be used for profiling the customers you have coming through the door at different times of day and stocking your store accordingly. This could also be used to monitor the effects that changes make such as new window displays or changes to signage not just in general but even into a section of the store. Taken all the way to the top end you could even have the system individually recognise specific people such as top spenders or VIP’s and alert staff to their presence in the store so that they can be handled appropriately. Another use of analytics is for use with digital signage which in a retail environment has become a fundamental component for many stores. This form of signage has some major advantages over traditional printed media in so far as it is quicker to change and can be more immediately relevant to the audience. If this is coupled with systems such as the biomarketing analytic systems mentioned above you can even display immediately relevant advertisement to the people looking at the display based on identity / sex / Age group. This level of inter system integration makes much greater use of the spend the company puts forward and allows greater control and analysis of the company’s return on Investment which is an essential part of any retail opportunity. Time has to be the biggest thing not to waste in the modern society therefore one major issue for modern retailers is data handling. This is especially true for multiple store situations where area managers can waste vast amounts of time driving between locations. Time spent going to sites and reviewing EPOS date, surveillance footage or making sure merchandising has been done in the correct way is not always possible or efficient. Because of this it has become increasingly popular to review data remotely however this has its own overhead of IT resource to manage the inter store connections. So cloud based solutions are ideal as the end devices manage the secure connection and the manager simply logs into a cloud based interface. This currently works for many different systems such as a range of EPOS software’s, Surveillance systems like NLSS and digital signage solutions such as signage live all interact with the cloud meaning data is both secure and easily available without visiting site. This level of accountability means it is far easier to manage a retail solution than ever before.

POTENTIAL AREAS FOR EXPANSION he IT infrastructure within the hospital and healthcare environments has had a large amount of investment over the years and can now be utilised for a massive number of different technologies whilst still retaining system security. Typically, your physical security system is put in place on these systems and, whilst no doubt an important part of the system, it operates on a standalone basis used specifically for security purposes. This in today’s healthcare environment is a limiting factor and the budget with which to pay for the system falls on the shoulders of one department. By expanding the flexibility of the system this increases the number of departments who can chip in and increase the chance of the project going ahead. In line with this many foreword thinking installers in IT, AV and security marketplaces are looking at expanding their repertoire of solution offerings through to the disciplines they are not currently active in. Traditional supply of each of these disciplines has been through their own distinct supply channel making the integrators job much harder in using systems for more than one thing. However, forward thinking specialist distributors offer integrators the ability to cross the discipline barrier and get support and advice across a number of different product sectors. more smoothly reducing delays. Going outside of the surveillance box but sticking with camera systems video conferencing is not a big step change in design philosophy from a traditional IP Surveillance solution. With modern systems this can allow increased options for the healthcare industry to allow remote consultations between colleagues or patients to take place remotely where the VC could even be used to display microscope views or other data which is very difficult to talk about with still imagery. Going back to a more traditional security focus we can expand on this with the use of systems like Facial analytics. From a pharmacies point of view this can help protect the dispenser from known offenders of prescription forgery by flagging up when already recognised suspects are at the counter even to new staff. When linked with control systems such as AMX you can automate processes around the building easily and control many things from one place such as reception. For example you could have the receptionist able to control not only what is on the TV and what audio is playing but also control other systems such as the lighting, how the blinds are positioned, door control through the IP based access control system with the list going on as far as the imagination can think. Technology open to integrators today means they can supply all of that and more going as far as to provide systems to operate on the network which can be used by either residents of a hospital such as IPTV system for residential patients though to supplying the systems the hospital use to operate their dispensary and back room processes and labs such as print solutions for prescriptions, blood bags or patient tagging. Modern healthcare procedures mean that in some environments you need to take into account all sorts of factors often overlooked from a security perspective, not least are the germs present. Something offered from the AV world which can easily be included into a surveillance system is medical displays and projection which are designed specifically for medical environments. With this type of technology in hand the security system can be integrated into a much bigger system than ever before possible the key thing being to utilise the relationship first gained with the client.

opportunities to expand on their offering into other markets whilst leveraging the IP communication knowledge they have had to learn for products now being used in the security marketplace. We are all aware of the amount of surveillance and access control that are fitted nowadays into the education sector and this will not reduce anytime soon. The failing to date though is this is being designed and fit as a standalone system when in fact the opportunities could be expanded to much wider reaches giving the integrator opportunity for many more upsell opportunities and giving the customer a more complete system. Starting with surveillance a typical system would have each camera being recorded and except in a few scenarios would only probably be reviewed on incident or in the background in an office somewhere. With current IP based systems the flexibility of the system increases and now the same camera can be used for both the traditional purpose and also used for a greater variety of other tasks. Some examples could be: Digital signage – Where in the past you would have a monitor being used solely for displaying people entering the school / college to prove they are on camera that same monitor if run as a digital signage opportunity could be setup so that it is also displaying the latest information such as today’s schedule. This could be expanded to include more opportunities around the schools where information may need to be displayed. Lecture capture systems – Rather than fit a separate lecture capture system, as is being used more frequently in a lot of modern institutions, you can re-use the camera system and drive the video feed through to the capture and distribution system, this reduces the overall cost of the system for the client. Data analysis - through the use of video analytic systems you can add a wealth of potential to a system. This could be used for any number of tasks from alerting to people in restricted areas through to facial recognition systems being used to alert for unregistered people entering a school. Once through the door of supplying audio visual equipment into a school through integrated disciplines as above the floodgates are then open for related systems which can also operate on the same IT infrastructure as used by the surveillance and access systems, such as: Interactive whiteboards – These are a massive thing within the school environment and take schools away from whiteboards and bring them into the 21st century. With an interactive whiteboard in place digital content such as presentations, live video feeds from the surveillance system or any other content can be easily displayed Audio PA systems – Schools are heavy users of audio systems whether for building evacuation or

simply for announcing to students new things happening or things to be aware of. It is often overlooked within the security industry but is probably the easiest cross sell of them all as it can even be sold as a security system IPTV systems – this type of system moves the student / college radio stations into the IP video realm with video attached. Modern systems are able to utilise broadcast quality cameras to allow the campus to generate their own internal TV stations as well as “broadcast” items and content around the school/college. In College dormitories this would even allow transmission of true TV channels. Wireless printing solutions – These can simplify the whole process of printing in an education environment and also tracking the quantity of printing allowed to individuals. This can be integrated with the same access control cards used for secure entry into the building making an efficient saving for the school. If we were to then look at the process of gaining entry to the premises this could be further enhanced by linking the access control system used into the IT systems active directory. You could have a situation whereby when a student swipes in for access to the school it could be used to both register their attendance which is essential for safety systems such as fire registers but also to unlock their account on the IT system. By locking the logins to the IT system for students not present it can stop unauthorised access of accounts and ensure student’s data is safe. One of the challenges for education establishments is the turnover of students, with an essential component of the system being the ability able to issue new cards to students every year. By the use of robust card printing solutions from vendors such as Zebra you can quickly and simply issue large quantities of cards with images loaded on for identification. With all of these systems operating on the IT infrastructure this opens the potential to get involved with the supply of not only the end points or devices to be used but the actual infrastructure that the system is to be run on, whether that be wireless or wired.

ALTOGETHER NOW hen it comes to integrated security solutions, today’s installers are having to contend with a phenomenal array of systems and providers in their quest to deliver a solution for their customers. Along the way they need to seriously consider whether the best route is to deal directly with one large multi-national vendor or, instead, to turn to a number of specialist providers who can bring the pieces of the puzzle together. Of course at a practical level, whichever path is chosen it is all about whether specific elements, such as an access control or alarm system, are actually going to work together in a seamless way. For large scale projects, like office complexes, airports, hospitals or manufacturing plants, installers may be tempted to specify one major supplier for the bulk of the security system elements. Often there is a belief that this is the best way to tap into the expertise necessary to combine disparate systems in a coherent, risk-free, way. If things do go wrong the thinking goes that at least there is only one person to seek out for remedial action. However, from the outset, it needs to be appreciated that there can be a downside to literally putting all of your eggs in one basket. The reality of taking a ‘one provider fits all’ approach and working with a ‘generalist’, may be that, although on the surface everything operates together, by virtue of the security systems’ common origins, a performance gap can be left that could otherwise have been bridged. By limiting the options, each security integration element is, in reality, going to be less likely to represent the most innovative, or user friendly, solution that could be delivered. Obtaining a proper understanding of a customer’s needs must be top of the agenda for all parties involved in the security system integration process, including, critically, installers. From a Harmony Alliance perspective, we feel that it is time for a re-think on how security integration is conducted by focusing on a way of combining the benefits of a ‘one-stop-shop’ with specialist providers’ expertise whilst also ensuring, crucially, that the process is solutions-driven. Consequently, companies who may not be the biggest players in the marketplace overall but who lead their own respective fields - whether that be intruder alarms, access control, detection at the perimeter or security system power supplies – should be given a much greater role at the project level. The reality is that when they coordinate their efforts this knowledge can prove invaluable in helping installers, and end users, to unlock a solution that is fit-for-purpose. Considering the Harmony Alliance, for example, our initiative, launched at the recent Global Security

Summit, is all about bringing specialist like-minded providers together – with complementary capabilities - who can offer a new perspective on major projects beyond that offered by traditional players. We believe that, moving forward, it makes sense for the market to focus on ‘best of breed’ security integration coupled with the reassurance that each part of the system has the potential to work together. Crucially, with the Alliance, at the project level, we are not looking to offer products without first appreciating the real requirements on the ground. In some respects the new Alliance we have created, which features five UK-headquartered electronic security manufacturers - specifically Elmdene International Limited, GJD, ALT, Texecom and TDSi - formalises already existing links where products from several companies have commonly been specified together. A good example of this is the fact that in recent years there has been a requirement from customers using Texecom’s intruder alarm products to be able to integrate these with TDSi’s access control systems. Ultimately, this led to an announcement earlier in the year regarding compatibility by the two companies. We believe the Harmony Alliance very much reflects the demand for new thinking on the ground. Taking the greener route Every industry is acutely aware of the environmental responsibilities and the security and surveillance world is certainly no different. INTELLIGENT DYNAMIC NOISE REDUCTION (IDNR) TECHNOLOGY Innovative technologies found in Bosch HD and Megapixel IP cameras can effectively reduce network bandwidth requirements and subsequent storage costs, while maintaining high quality and detailed images.

Megapixel cameras deliver ultra-detailed images with more useful information – but this comes at a cost. The volume of data required to transport and store these images has risen significantly. The bandwidth demands that this places on the network infrastructure and the increase in required storage capacity adds significantly to total IP system costs. Disk space is one of the most expensive components of IP systems. Higher storage costs can ultimately cost you the difference of winning the next large project. The best place to reduce these costs is at the source – in the camera. And this is where Bosch takes a multi-pronged approach to reducing the quantity of data while retaining high quality of image: • Content-based Imaging Technology (CBIT) to reduce noise • Region prioritization to target important information • Optimized encoder efficiency to increase compression ratios The combination of these technologies has a significant impact on the bit rate/quality ratio which is directly proportional to storage and network costs.

The key to noise reduction Noise is a random pattern of pixels visible in the image. Some degree of noise is always present in any electronic device that transmits or receives a signal. Image noise is an undesirable by-product of image capture and the most detrimental factor in clogging the encoding process which leads directly to exaggerated bit rates for a given image.

Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR) Classic noise reduction can take two forms. Spatial noise reduction averages the pixels within a frame to reduce noise. Temporal noise reduction involves averaging pixels over several frames to cancel out noise artifacts. Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR) is a new approach that uses a combination of these two methods and dynamically adjusts them based upon light levels and the CBIT analysis of moving objects in the scene. Temporal noise reduction is very effective for static images but can cause problems when there is motion in the image. If temporal noise reduction is applied to moving objects, ghosting may be visible in the image where objects are blurred or repeated. CBIT analysis identifies those frames in which there is movement and passes this information back to the DSP which then adapts the temporal noise reduction for these frames. iDNR uses three factors to control spatial and temporal noise reduction: • CBIT movement analysis • Scene light level • User-set levels By combining these processes, iDNR optimizes bandwidth by dynamically tuning the degree of noise reduction based upon an analysis of important objects moving through the camera’s field of view. When the scene is quiet or no motion is present, bandwidth is minimized. When an important object is detected, bandwidth increases to capture maximum details. iDNR’s advanced algorithm can reduce bit rates and storage requirements by up to 50 percent in certain scenes without reducing video quality.

Megapixel cameras are more susceptible to noise as the pixels on the sensor are smaller and are not able to collect as much light. More amplification is required which introduces noise. Low-light scenes also contribute to an increase in noise levels. A first in the security industry, Bosch introduces a new technology for controlling the image processing. Content-based Imaging Technology (CBIT) is an intelligent scene analysis system that examines the actual content of the video image and provides feedback to the digital signal processor (DSP) to re-tune the image processing. Bosch is the only security camera manufacturer with full control over image processing with intelligent video analysis (IVA) and Motion+. With this ground-breaking platform CBIT enables the sensors, the image processing and IVA to work as one module. CBIT radically improves the image quality in many areas but also has considerable impact when used to reduce noise.

Turning iDNR into real savings The savings that can be achieved with iDNR are easy to calculate. In our tests, bit rate reduction showed savings of up to 58 percent in one example. This can be directly correlated to savings realized in storage costs. So, in essence, if a video storage device costs 8.000 you may possibly only need to spend 3360 for the same amount of image detail being stored. Bosch has engineered the ability to tune the image pipeline based on scene content. As a result of this, we are able to implement Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR) which can reduce noise in an image based on motion and light levels. iDNR generally delivers up to 50 percent bit rate reduction over standard VBR in scenes without motion. Combined with the full range of CBIT features, this means an overall reduction of up to 30 percent for your surveillance system – this means a dramatic reduction in required storage space, power and cooling which enables you protect your assets, your budget, and the environment. Remember, it is always possible to reduce bit rate - but this normally affects image quality adversely. The key benefit of iDNR and region prioritization is that you get significantly lower bandwidth without loss of image quality. Bosch cameras provide the most usable image possible by optimizing the detail-to-bandwidth ratio. This equates to considerable savings on storage costs without jeopardizing image quality! Ultimately, the Megapixel camera that provides the highest quality video with the lowest bandwidth and storage requirements will be the most desirable choice for the customer.

Video surveillance management software maximises benefit of ground breaking technology

Samsung Security Manager (SSM) is a license-free video surveillance management software platform designed to enable Samsung Techwin’s customers to gain maximum benefit from their investment in the company’s network cameras, encoders, DVRs and NVRs.

“The development of our IP network range is now at a stage where it can offer customers a one-stop solution for IP network based security solutions,” said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “With this is mind it is obviously important that the functionality of our video surveillance management software makes it possible for customers to take full advantage of the ground breaking technology which we have built into our network cameras and recording solutions.” The client-server architecture of SSM provides for up to 1,152 network devices installed across any number of buildings or sites, to be monitored and controlled simultaneously by up to 20 authorised users from anywhere on a network. Its graphical user interface also makes it very easy to register new devices, whilst the software support ‘health checks’ and allows for automatic upgrade of any Samsung device on the network. One of the keys features of SSM is its intuitive graphical user interface which allows an operator to choose a display configuration which best matches the number of cameras they need to monitor at any one time. Each configuration, which can include various split screen options in 4:3 or 16:9 display format, can be named and

saved for future use. Building or site maps can be imported which can be overlaid with icons representing the locations of installed cameras. The icons can be set up to pop-up if there is a related alarm event, allowing an operator to quickly select and monitor live images from the camera which is nearest to the incident, whilst at the same time having the option to retrieve recorded video of what may have occurred before the alarm was triggered. A real-time event viewer provides an event log which can include a single channel preview as well as comments entered by an operator. The event log, which can be sorted by camera number or event type, can be exported in Excel/PDF format to be used if necessary as evidence. Smart Security Samsung’s philosophy of delivering Smart Security is reflected in a product portfolio which provides customers with the flexibility to choose the best solution for the job in hand. Whilst Samsung is able to be a single source for an endto-end IP network based video surveillance system, it is recognised that users will want to achieve the full benefit from their investment in a security system. This means providing customers with the option for Samsung products to be controlled and monitored alongside equipment produced by other manufacturers. With this in mind, Samsung has successfully accelerated its programme to integrate its cameras, DVRs and NVRs with ‘open’ video management software offered by leading independent software development companies and designed to facilitate the integration of equipment and systems from different manufacturers. Working closely with VMS companies is in fact very much part of the Samsung Smart Security philosophy which is primarily about making it easy for customers who are looking for a gradual transition from an existing analogue system to a full IP network based surveillance solution. The functionality of the software available from the various VMS companies will not of course be identical but, regardless of which platform customers choose, they can expect to be able to have a high degree of control of cameras and recording devices from various manufacturers, as well as the flexibility to integrate, for example, video analytics, access control systems and mobile devices. EVERTON FC UPGRADES SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM The Goodison Park Stadium in Liverpool, has modernised its video security system with the multifocal sensor system Panomera from Dallmeier. Stadium Manager Alan Bowen talks us through the installation pened in 1892, the Goodison Park in Liverpool was the first major football stadium built in England. “The Grand Old Lady”, as the stadium is also called, is the first British stadium with double-decker stands on all four sides and the first stadium with a massive three-tiered Main Stand. Home to the Everton F.C., the current seating capacity of the ground is more than 40,000. We spoke to Alan Bowen, Stadium Manager at Goodison Park, about the installation and the benefits of upgrading the system. Alan, why did you opt for a modernisation of the existing CCTV system? Due to the age of the infrastructure in place since the late 1980’s, and change in spectators’ behaviour, we at Everton concluded that a complete modernisation of the CCTV system was necessary. The original system was installed at a time when Hooliganism was at its highest peak in UK football. The CCTV system worked at the time and was a major factor in allowing ourselves and the police to deal with the problem. However, although the levels of Hooliganism have greatly diminished now in UK football, other issues such as missile throwing, lighting of flares etc., have become the norm rather than the exception. The existing CCTV system was not effective in giving us the detailed information on both live and playback, of image quality and frame rate that we required to cope with these new issues. I would state at this point quality of the recordings is as important as the quality of the live images

We now required a system that was designed to give complete coverage of seating areas in the Stadium Bowl which also would give us the above. In the 2011-2012 home Derby against Liverpool we did have missile throwing incidents which the existing CCTV system could not capture. We at that stage had to make a commitment to the Premier League that we would without delay start to source the CCTV system that would ultimately be able to give us both the live and playback images required to cope with incidents such as this. How did you choose the system? We first met Dallmeier at a FSOA (Football Safety Officers Association) conference where they were exhibiting, at that time, with their new Panomera multifocal sensor system. We invited them to come along to Goodison Park to do a live match trial with their system. We also invited four other manufactures during our selection process, who claimed they could provide a CCTV solution to meet our requirements for separate live match trials. We also visited other stadiums where HD quality systems were installed and travelled to specific manufacturers’ development and manufacturing facilities, in our search for the best quality system to meet our exact requirements, and if possible better them. What was the biggest challenge in this project? What is special in this project compared to other video surveillance solutions? The biggest challenge was convincing the board of directors of the operational requirement of the system required to meet our exact needs.

Goodison Park was the first major football stadium built in England. Its age and history and layout are what make it a very special and challenging project. That coupled along with the way our floodlights are installed on the stand roofs have so far and will continue to make this a very special project. Can you give us an overview of the installed video surveillance solution? The Panomera solution offered at Everton includes several multifocal sensor systems which provide a quality up to 85 megapixels each at a frame rate of 12 images per second. The images can be streamed to multiple operators enabling them to work independently with detailed “spot” views. The whole scene is being recorded irrelevant of where the operators are looking, enabling retrospective playback into any area after an event. Recorded footage can be viewed instantly and simultaneously to live views on match days or reviewed subsequent to the event. In addition to the Panomera multifocal sensor systems the solution includes High Definition Dallmeier PTZ cameras located in strategic positions around the ground to provide live images in exceptional quality. There are also fixed HD dome cameras located in licensing areas within the ground. The control room includes two SeMSy operator positions. Additional operator positions have been included for the Security Manager and Police – enabling them to independently view cameras and replay incidents on demand. A SeMSy workstation is also provided for the Stadium Manager’s office enabling me to view and investigate incidents. All images are recorded on IPS 2400 appliances. These units provide not only recording for 40x Match day 5 hour events of the

multifocal sensor systems, but also 31 day loop storage for the general surveillance cameras. What do you expect from the new surveillance system? We are very confident that the complete solution inclusive of the Panomera multifocal sensor system being supplied by Dallmeier and fitted by our existing incumbent installer, TG Baker Sound, is the best we could find in the market at this time. The product gives us the maximum opportunity to identify those committing offences inside the stadium and will greatly assist in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour inside Goodison Park.

The platform consists of two key elements – Zone Wing and Zone Door – that combine to make a network of access controllers that can be matched to users’ system design requirements. In addition, access readers can be configured to be real-time time registration points, or auxiliary terminals can be added onto the system to provide richer T&A functionality. Zone Wing controls all communications with the host system over Ethernet. It stores access profiles and offline events for the points it supervises and communicates with all connected Zone Door units over an innovative CAN subnetwork. Zone Door manages all of the inputs and outputs for access control. Each Zone Door has two card (or biometric) reader inputs, RS485 connection (for various peripherals) and all of the required digital I/O. Wire-free video transmission system ESP has launched the EZ-WF Wirefree Video Signal Link, which is designed to provide a stable digital wire-free solution for the transmission of a video signal, where a cable run would be expensive or troublesome. Ideal for domestic or commercial applications, installation of the WZ-WF is easy. The transmitter and receiver come as factory ‘paired’, which means there is no setting up required. 270-degree camera with built-in bracket The Axis P5414-E PTZ Dome Network Camera is the first of a new line of outdoor-ready pan/tilt/zoom cameras with an intelligent direct drive pan/tilt system. The HDTV 720p PTZ dome camera featuring an 18x optical zoom is directly attached to the drive shaft of two motors—one for panning and another for tilting the camera. A built-in wall bracket eliminates the need to purchase a separate mounting accessory thus making wall-mount installations easier. The AXIS P5414-E has an integrated sunshield that is designed for easy removal, allowing customers to repaint it to match the installation environment. The sunshield’s sloping form also helps the camera resist attempts by vandals to pull it down. The camera has a hidden junction box that supports two-way audio, a memory card slot, four configurable inputs/outputs to external devices, and the option for customers to use either 24 V DC or Power over Ethernet Plus (IEEE 802.3at). IP transmission made easy Network Video Technologies (NVT) has released TBus UTP/Ethernet-over-Coax Transmission product series. TBus (short for “Transmission Bus”) is the backbone communications architecture for NVT’s range of IP transmission devices. TBus supports all forms of UTP and coax cable, as well as 18/2, 2-wire (un-twisted wire), and STP (shielded twisted-pair), and in any combination of star, peer-to-peer, or daisy-chain cabling topology. In addition, TBus delivers 56VDC power for remote transceivers as well as their remote PoE devices. Loads of up to 1-Amp are possible, supporting high power PoE+ devices up to 50 watts. TBus supports advanced 128bit AES encrypted network speeds of up to 200Mbps. Data distances of 8,000ft are possible on RG59/U. Infrastructure benefits for retail complex Honeywell has completed upgrades to the control systems and IT network at the 42-acre Liverpool ONE shopping, residential and leisure complex – delivering commercial, operational and energy benefits as a result Liverpool ONE is one of the largest retail developments in England with 1.65 million square feet of retail and leisure space anchored by two department stores, with over 140 shops and additional facilities including a 14-screen cinema, 36-hole adventure golf centre, restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels, apartments and offices. Honeywell Building Solutions designed, installed and commissioned the system upgrade within a stipulated sixmonth timescale. The upgrade included the deployment of a private hosted virtualisation solution across the server infrastructure. Virtualisation enables Liverpool ONE to obtain much higher productivity from fewer servers – reducing IT and associated energy costs, cutting carbon emissions by 190 tons per annum and freeing up valuable space that can be released for revenue-generating retail purposes. It also simplifies the management and maintenance of the system, minimises any potential lost revenue associated with downtime, outages and failures, and facilitates the speedy deployment of new applications. At the same time, HBS upgraded the building management and CCTV platforms to EBI R410 and DVM500 respectively. “The upgrades have reduced electrical and cooling requirements, which will cut Liverpool ONE’s CO2 emissions significantly,” says HBS National Account Manager John Leonard. “Combined with the savings made in IT capital expenditure, reduced maintenance requirement, enhanced system integrity and the value generated through the availability of additional space within the facility, this investment will deliver important on-going benefits to Liverpool ONE.” The EBI upgrade enables the building operator to view and control building systems using a variety of compatible mobile devices, including Blackberry and iPhone. This improves productivity and allows building operators to have more insight and control over their facility without being tethered to a desktop computer or console. DVM500 improves security system scalability and reliability while reducing costs by eliminating downtime due to a single point of failure, reducing bandwidth and storage requirements and supporting virtual server environments.

Housing development goes IP IQinVision has revealed that the Calypso mixeduse housing development in the Netherlands has installed an IP video surveillance solution with distributor Xserius and installer Spindler Calypso is a new apartment building complex, located in the Rotterdam city centre. The concept combines design, comfort, safety and luxury all in one location. The building houses retail shops, offices and a church in addition to personal residences. Securing an apartment building is a complicated challenge; many people live within a relatively small area and must be able to live together safely. As with any mixed-use project, it is a priority to ensure resident safety and comfort when there are also many nonresidents taking advantage of the public use spaces. On the other hand, comfortable living and resident privacy are also very important. It was up to the installer and Xserius to devise a happy medium among these sometimes conflicting priorities. The two partners chose a centralised IP-based solution powered by 80 IQeye HD megapixel cameras. IQeye IP cameras provide high resolution megapixel images managed by a Mirasys 30

video management software package. Grandstream SIP video phones are installed in each apartment connected to the mTouch SIP Video Intercom station in the lobby to grant access to the building. The Mirasys system provides live video at the reception desk and to other viewing locations within the complex. Calypso residents, guests, shoppers and visitors can now enjoy the benefits of an IP-based video surveillance and visitor management security system in which comfort, safety and luxury living come together in an effective, yet low-key manner.
