IFSEC shows the way

When the doors of IFSEC International open in May, visitors will notice a difference, and it’s one they shouldn’t ignore, but embrace

Let’s be honest about it, while there are companies that genuinely do good works for charity or provide specific support for employees, there is a lot of virtue signalling going on these days in the corporate world. Businesses quite often align themselves with the “current thing” because they want to do the right thing which, in most cases, is an honourable approach. However, doing it for the publicity or social media likes, a sales angle or even just because companies fear a Twitter backlash that might happen if they are not seen to be following the trend, does not make them as virtuous as they would like to appear. Given that, there is an initiative that needs to be addressed and it should be as a matter of course for everyone, so not something with PR miles or new business in it.

One of the current ideals being embraced by organisations, governments and the public is that of sustainability. What the environmental impact of certain decisions might be and how this could be reduced is part of the carbon footprint approach and one that, up until now, the security industry hasn’t really got on board with it in a major way. Yes, there are some of you that have switched to an all-electric or hybrid fleet of vans and embraced the modern technological advantages of apps etc to remotely manage kit helping to cut down on your overall mileage, but there’s not been a sector-wide drive in our contribution to sustainability – yet.

This could all change following the news we outlined in last month’s edition that this year’s IFSEC International event will have a major focus on the role of the security industry in regard to sustainability and is also taking big steps itself to reduce its impact on the environment. Visitors to the event will notice that there are some measures in place that will help the organisers of the show cut down on wastage and one-time-use materials. If events the size of IFSEC and Firex are taking sustainability on board then this is going to make others aware of what they need to be doing.

Updating firmware and software instead of hardware is a route the industry may start to adopt, and there are other initiatives you can look at as well. To find out what the experts think take a look at the PSI Panel feature this month.

Chubb celebrates Apprentice of the Year Award from NCL

Chubb has congratulated a remarkable staff member on winning an Apprentice of the Year award.

Cameron Mahoney won the First Year Apprentice of the Year award from New College Lanarkshire (NCL), the provider of fire and security apprenticeships in Scotland, at this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

Cameron, who beat 61 other students to the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards trophy, said: “I’m proud to have won the award out of so many people.”

NCL also commended two other Chubb apprentices, Cameron Matthew and Owen Craig, for being in the top 10 during the award ceremony held at the college.

Simon Gallacher, Regional Service Manager for Chubb in Scotland, commented that it was a real pleasure to be present for Cameron’s winning and to accept the prize for Chubb, almost 20 years since winning the apprentice award himself: “I’m a great believer in Chubb’s Apprenticeship program. I started as an apprentice with Chubb in 2003 and, like many others, have turned my apprenticeship into an enriching career.

“I have held multiple roles in the past 20 years, and I’m not sure I could have done that anywhere else as Chubb has enabled that progression. I’ve had some very supportive managers who have demonstrated great leadership and have always encouraged me to aim higher. Apprenticeships are challenging, they take much work, and you essentially get back what you put in. The apprentices we have in the team are a testament to that ethos, and they show exactly where a positive attitude and desire to learn can take you.”

SSAIB Chief Executive retires

Alex Carmichael, Chief Executive of SSAIB, retired at the end of March. Alex has led SSAIB since 2015, when he took over as CEO from Geoff Tate and over the past eight years has expanded the SSAIB`s scope of UKAS accredited activities, built up the SSAIB`s administration expertise and extended the number and competence of SSAIB`s audit teams. As a result, SSAIB now has a client base in excess of 2000 companies.

Alex joined the SSAIB in 2015 having previously been the Director of Technical Services at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), whom he had been with for 16 years. Alex’s career also included over 24 years’ experience in the British Army in various Electronic/Optronic technical/ engineering roles within the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

Alex commented before leaving: “As I step down and prepare for my next adventure in retirement, I reflect on the fact that in my eight years as Chief Executive of SSAIB, I have seen this remarkable industry meet many challenges and overcome them and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the SSAIB staff for their support, particularly for their can-do attitude, their knowledge and the proficient manner in which they carried their work which underpins the continuing growth and strength of the SSAIB.

Amthal, as a dedicated part of the Honeywell Gent Network has delivered its first CPD seminar on fire technology, to an integrated property consultancy. In partnership with Honeywell Gent and Motorola Avigilon, the CPD entitled “Comply, Stay Alive!” highlighted the importance of fire safety.

This was followed by a look at the successful delivery of the Marlborough Science Academy full site wide fire alarm upgrade using Gent technology including Connected Life Safety Service. The installation presents a fully integrated 50 camera end-toend Avigilon system deployed to protect pupils and staff and help maintain a friendly safe environment.

Bundle launch aims to help move to all-IP

BT Redcare has launched a Classic and GSM replacement bundle, ahead of the network supporting these products being shut down in 2025.

The replacement bundle incorporates BT Redcare’s Advanced Extra signalling solution alongside two new products that have been designed to make swap out quick and easy for installers and customers.

The Plug-In Adaptor simplifies upgrades by using the existing alarm panel footprint used by the Classic and GSM products. They can be easily replaced, keeping the same security panel, meaning installers only need to take out the Classic or GSM STU and replace it with the Advanced Extra. The Plug-In Adaptor can be used with all devices within the BT Redcare Next Generation Portfolio. Redcare Connect is a new wireless ethernet solution that sends secure signals directly from the panel to the customer’s router using private Wi-Fi and/or long-range IoT technology for stronger coverage.

Augmented reality app for access control installers

2N has launched an augmented reality app, 2N AppeAR, that allows integrators and installers to see how the company’s products would look if incorporated into projects.

For every 2N product, 2N AppeAR provides detailed 3D models, technical information, videos, and the option to view them disassembled. It also enables ‘virtual installation’ so that installers can ensure that the product chosen is the right fit for the project. Users point their phone at the place they are considering installing the device and an augmented reality image of it appears on the screen as if it were in the room.

Digital pyro upgrade for dual motion detectors

Aritech has announced that its dual motion detector line-up has had two major upgrades to address the challenge of false/unwanted alarm detection.

Physical security suite marks integration from three acquisitions

Motorola Solutions has announced the new Avigilon physical security suite that includes the cloud-native Avigilon Alta and on-premise Avigilon Unity solutions.

The launch of the new suite marks the integration of technologies from three acquisitions – Avigilon (2018), Openpath (2021) and Ava Security (2022) – to create one physical security platform under a modernised Avigilon brand.

Avigilon Alta is an entirely cloud-native security suite that brings together Ava Security’s video portfolio and Openpath’s access control solutions. The instructions provided with the kit are very useful and give an easy to follow step-by-step and include a QR code to further information held on the Pyronix website

The system is a smart HD video doorbell and wireless chime kit that allows users to receive real-time alerts from the front door and stay connected to home; never missing a visitor or delivery again. The DoorbellCam has an inbuilt mic and speaker for two-way contact. Localised alerts are made possible with the DoorbellChime. The battery-powered (3 x AAso no PSU required), audible chime has been designed for full audio coverage throughout the property, offering four levels of volume. Up to four Chimes can be positioned within a property, so homeowners can remain assured they’ll always hear a caller.

Build

The overall build quality of the doorbell camera is good. It comes with a sturdy sun/ rain guard mounting plate and a slide fit for the main housing itself secured by a security screw. The main housing has multiple rubber tabs that protect the charging port, SD card insert, reset button and power toggle – which are well positioned and protected to further ensure IP65 rating.

Set up

The instructions provided with the kit are very useful and give an easy to follow step-by-step

and include a QR code to further information held on the Pyronix website.

There are also in-app set up instructions and videos that will walk you through the set-up process which are very useful for those that do not have a technical background or for end user installations.

For the set up of the kit you require to have the following set-up before undertaking the initialisation of the device.

• You will require to have the Home Control 2.0 application downloaded and a user registration completed – which is free

• You will need to have the 2.4Ghz frequency enabled on your router

• You will need 3x AA batteries for your chime unit(s) or have them on permanent power.

If the above are ready, the remaining set-up of the doorbell cam and chime unit is very straightforward and simple to follow. Simply hit “+” add and follow the prompts through to showing the doorbell cam your app generated QR code.

Once online, there is no further set up required, but for optimum performance, some key settings may want to be altered from default to suit user preference. “Offline notifications” and “2 way audio” are disabled as default for example.

For the chime unit, it is just as easy to learn to your doorbell cam by holding down your settings button on the chime unit for 2 seconds until it turns red, then press the ring button on the unit you want to tie the sounder to. Each doorbell camera has the ability to connect up to eight chime units for distribution throughout the premises.

Performance

The The doorbell cam comes with a 6700 mAh internal, rechargeable battery that will reportedly last up to ten months on optimum operation, but this will significantly be reduced dependant of the usage and remote viewing time.

This easy to set up and straightforward to use video doorbell kit would be a great addition to any smart home system or simply to provide more functionality at an entrance way

Pyronix has also provided termination points on their mounting plate that allows you to connect 12/24v AC power for permanent power applications where heavy use of the device may be required.

The doorbell camera itself utilises a 2MP wide angle camera, providing a very good 103 degree viewing angle and a day/night function. The camera has a toggle of standard and high definition, but in either case provided a very good camera quality that gives this doorbell camera advantage over others on the market. The unit provides 2-way audio that needs to be enabled at the setup stage, as default it is set to one way audio during operations. The audio is provided in full duplex and is clear both through the unit and in app. The only thing to note is that there was a 3 – 5 second delay in both the audio and video feed.

The unit is supplied with a 32Gb SD card and allows for remote recording and retrieval of video without the requirement of a subscription like other video doorbells on the market. The SD capabilities for the unit will take up to 128Gb if you require to have a longer log or archive of video and images.

Conclusion

This easy to set up and straightforward to use video doorbell kit would be a great addition to any smart home system or simply to provide more functionality at an entrance way.

Protecting IP video data

While not actually a UK law, the US NDAA has had some mainstream media coverage on these shores, which has raised concerns about data security in some applications

The John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, commonly referred to as the NDAA, concerns the purchase of technology from specified vendors by the US federal government and some perceived security issues around its use. Whether a valid concern or not, securing non-compliant cameras here in the UK has also become a hot topic over the last few years despite the NDAA legislation not actually being in place over here. Some organisations, in particular US-linked businesses based in the UK, need to be aware of the Act and its stipulations and ensure that systems meet the requirements involved. UK-only companies, on the other hand are not bound by any law that restricts the use of the equipment, yet some are looking at the issue and what measures could be put into place.

One such solution is the Vemotion Video Firewall, designed to help protect high-security applications, and Local Government and Law Enforcement agencies that use non-NDAA compliant surveillance cameras and have any concerns regarding the kit they already have.

To find out more about the system, PSI spoke with Steve Haworth, Vemotion’s CEO, who explained the background to the technology and why going to the expensive lengths of replacing existing cameras in an application is not necessary to secure the data on the network from any potential risk

Did you specifically develop the firewall with the NDAA in mind, or is a function of an existing product?

I’d say it was a redevelopment of an existing system. Our video streaming products already isolate cameras from networks effectively, but what we’ve done with this product is basically take all of the elements of our existing systems and shrunk them down to a single box solution at a price point that makes sense. We are very much aware that putting a unit next to every camera already installed is more viable than buying a whole new video streaming solution. Essentially, in terms of functionality the new firewall is a stripped-down version of an existing system but packaged at a price point that makes sense to installers and their customers.

What’s involved with installing the firewall?

It’s a piece of hardware that is fitted next to the camera in the existing application. The unit is a small box that connects the camera to the firewall and then the firewall talks directly to the VMS. In all intents and purposes, by using the firewall you are setting up a secondary network, taking the camera off the original network, meaning that the camera never has access to speak outside the network - it only links to the firewall and then the VMS. This adds security and control to the data and, in reality, using the term firewall to describe the product doesn’t do it justice, because it is capable of doing a lot more than just being a firewall. What we’re doing is enabling the VMS to still do pan, tilt, zoom functions and control the camera, but technically the VMS is speaking to the firewall which, in turn, is speaking to the camera. For the installer, fitting the unit is easy and there is just a one-off charge for the kit with a small annual maintenance fee.

In terms of the camera, does the system work on any make or model?

Yes it does, but for all the control and features ONVI F is a requirement, however most cameras can at least stream an image with the firewall. Of course, if you are working on an application for local government or police, you’ll likely be using ONVIF cameras anyway.

As we don’t have NDAA in the UK, which applications is the technology aimed at?

In development, we looked at the CCTV market and, yes, while the NDAA itself is not enforced in the UK, we thought about what would happen if there was a change in government or in legislation and then what installers and their customers would do if they had a big installed base of cameras and they needed to secure the network. We realised that by isolating the camera off the network and using a secure video

firewall was the way forward. We’re happy to leave the politics of the issue to governments to sort out, but from a technically secure point of view, we needed to find a solution that stopped anyone from potentially getting at the data moving from the camera to the VMS. In most cases, this is seen as a concern for the police and local government etc, but it also includes the military and critical national infrastructure installations that have an extra focus on the security element of their data.

Where do you see the concern about NDAA coming from; the installer or the end user?

It’s coming from both, but I would say that it is being driven by the customer, wondering whether they are secure in carrying on using the camera technology they have in place. In essence, there is a lot of confusion around at the moment, which I think comes from people not knowing the full details about the real situation, rather than the way it has been covered in some media outlets. In general, for the police and councils that deal with crimes etc, having a camera off the network makes perfect sense for them. And in terms of budgets and, increasingly these days, sustainability, people can’t just rip out and replace their existing camera investments, some of which could have been only recently installed. The customers that are seemingly most concerned about the issue have cameras that have potentially got a lot of “life” left in them, so they simply don’t have the budget to pay for another installation so soon after the initial work was carried out.

Given that cameras are seen as data gathering devices today, will video data security concerns only grow?

Concerns will always exist, but they can be dealt with as long as we can keep up with technological developments. As soon as the world went over to IP, the rate of innovation around networks went up too, on the side of good and bad intentions. There are ways to effectively manage these data security issues and if you think about other sectors, such as online banking, everyday data problems are being managed as the world becomes more network reliant and new systems are launched. Video data security will need constant attention in the future, particularly as more capabilities go into networked devices, making them a more lucrative target, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be used, it just means they will need up to date protection from any new threats going forward.

The competition helps to raise the profile of engineering apprenticeships and the opportunity they represent within the sector. There are two separate competitions – one for electronic security systems, and the other for fire systems. Taking place at IFSEC and FIREX International in May, winners of the regional heats for both competitions will compete in a live installation challenge at the show.

How

Sustainability is described online as fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. In other words, not using rescources unecessarily as we have come to recognise in modern throw-away, single-use lifestyles that promote changing your smartphone every six months despite there being no genuine reason to do so.

In the security industry, not only is it a false economy to rip-out and replace systems every time the latest kit hits the shelves, but it goes against the ethics of sustainability and wastage. So, should firmware and software updates take precedence over new hardware, for example, and what else could you do to help?

Joe Priestnall – CSL

At CSL, we are committing to a sustainable future for our business, staff, customers, and partners. We provide our customers and endusers with solutions and managed services that offer remote access to their systems for servicing, maintenance, and full diagnostics. We are conscious that more installers are feeling the pressure to demonstrate ways in which they are taking steps to be greener. Further evidence of our environmental commitment can be found in the Assa Abloy Annual Sustainability Report. During 2022, the Group reduced its carbon footprint by 20% and reduced our water intensity by 40%, against the 2019 baseline.

Overall, the industry has a role to play in supporting sustainability goals in line with the United Nations recommendations. Distributors and installers can play their part by encouraging a long-term view in the products they specify. Previously, installers would add a magnet requiring permanent 24volts when fitting an access control solution to a door, however this isn’t sensible or sustainable.

As energy costs increase, sustainable solutions are in the forefront customers minds. It is now accepted that the although the initial outlay might be more, over time this levels out.

Although the initial outlay may be more for a sustainable solution, it is accepted that today, customers are looking for more and sustainability is an important differentiator.

The lifecycle of security equipment is now more important, as organisations give thought to their environmental and social governance strategies. Extending the lifecycle of CCTV hardware can only make an incremental difference in reducing waste and carbon footprints, yet small changes feed into overarching goals. Users are now looking toward equipment that is robust, proven to last, and backed up extended warranties.

It will be increasingly important for businesses adopt ethical practices, if they are to offset looming tax burdens and to stay relevant to customers and consumers. One effect of this will be to put an end to the “to the stack it high and sell it cheap” model we’ve seen over the last decade. The entire security buying chain has its part to play in this shift to sustainability.

Some installers may have seen the failure of kit as an easy upgrade opportunity, but a cheap upgrade is still a one-off job, versus more profitable and predictable recurring maintenance revenue. Not only is poor quality kit more expensive for customers longer-term, replacing hardware is costly for integrators with maintenance contracts. The business model of regularly upgrading cameras has many costs - including engineers making multiple visits to sites using fuel, often idle in traffic; decommissioning and recycling; the cost of new brackets or mounts; and hiring cherry pickers - aside from the risk of missing agreed SLAs and incurring fines.

Integrators have much to gain by focusing on lifecycle costs instead of upfront costs. And remember, VMS is the backbone of every effective surveillance system. It’s important to choose VMS with no costs, but with modular and fair license fees, preferably without annual maintenance agreements, which means free firmware updates. Choosing the right VMS will also allow users to migrate more easily, add new cameras, and adopt AI analytics, all while still running legacy equipment. And with the right VMS and encoders, integrators should be able to mix third-party analogue cameras with IP, avoiding disruption and waste of “rip-and-replace” and instead giving users a futureproof and sustainable solution.

What would be a typical project for you?

Usually a full design and build solution. We would star t from being appointed as a design consultant, which would continue through the installation and commissioning process, which would then result with a maintenance and support contract.

Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers?

Yes we do, although we make sure with the manufactures we install and maintain, that our

team know thoroughly from back office and engineering team. The technology we tend to focus on is proactive security like AI video analytics. For CCTV we would install Avigilon or Hanwha, access control would be Avigilon, Inner Range, Honeywell or Paxton, for intruder alarms we install Texecom, our fire alarm offering is from C-TEC, Kentec, Advance and Apollo ranges. Lastly, for door entry, we use BPT, 2N and Comelit.

What is the best thing about working in this industry?

Having the opportunity to see how different industries operate, being able to offer your services overseas and travel - seeing a bit

Is third party certification beneficial?

We have found that it helps in many ways, gaining trust with a customer and tendering for cer tain projects.

Do you think there is an engineer skills shor tage? Any trouble recruiting?

We are always eager to find highly skilled engineers, which can be challenging. Hopefully in the near future we will start to see more courses ranging from higher education college courses to undergraduate schemes to assist in promoting and spreading awareness about careers in fire and security to the younger generation. Though we also believe the apprenticeships are great platform to start with.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems?

Possibly the most common request is the pricing. Therefore, educating the customer on the products we install, the time it takes to ensure its setup correctly, can be challenging as there are times where security can be deemed as a grudge buy.

What is the security industry’s biggest myth?

As we know fire kills, though smoke inhalation is a greater threat. Understanding that thorough detection is important throughout the property. Viewing an intruder alarm in a different perspective is required. Unfortunately, aggravated burglary is now more common, therefore if an intruder was to break into someone’s home the most important tool at their disposal will be your panic alarm. Ensuring you feel protected within your home.

People still remember the old “Crimewatch” video and believe CCTV still reaps very little reward. CCTV is now ultra high definition with in-built AI and is able to capture images further away from the property when the intruder believes themselves to be safe. Of course, this does require the solution to be designed correctly with the requisite pixels on target and lux levels.

What impact has smart/home automation had on your business?

We are quite fortunate that we have partnered up with some excellent AV companies. Though we have seen a decrease in requests for enquiries for domestics in comparison to recent years.

What would make your job easier?

Possibly if all trades could work well together onsite to ensure the project goes to plan. Also, if trades become specialist in their fields and partner up with other companies. Whilst we are fortunate to work with a number of great electrical contractors and AV integrators who recognise the value of a security company that design and install to a specialist system. Too often we see other companies undercut the specialist’s market price and then provide an ill-thoughtout solution. Unfortunately, the end user suffers as a result.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product?

Individual technologies are moving forward in their silos. CCTV with enhanced AI, access control with biometrics. It would be great to see fully IP intruder alarms. That could be IP addressable devices sitting on a structured cabling network.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Invest as much as possible.

Every Connectivity is at the forefront of modern building management functions, with recent research showing that 95% of security professionals understand the crucial importance of integration. What’s more, 92% consider open architecture - designed for interoperability with similar technologies and products - to be important.

Integrating access control with other security functions can streamline operations, but to truly reap the benefits of connected security, organisations require security technologies that work seamlessly with each other.

So, what benefits can be gained with true integration, and how can businesses utilise systems effectively?

Organisations often use access control as their initial step into integrated building management. Connecting security domains through one platform offers the advantage of being able to manage each associated system through one central hub with one user interface.

Control from a single, integrated interface can boost efficiency in many ways. Some are specific to an industry or business, but there are advantages which apply almost anywhere.

For example, integration reduces training needs and therefore costs. Everything is administered from a single system, rather than several working in isolation.

Furthermore, when facilities staff only consult or update one interface, they save time and reduce manual errors, and analytics can deliver more value and better insights when multiple sources of data provide input.

Interoperability standards

A smart building is integrated and automated, relying on standards for interoperability to keep data flowing. For example, Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) streamlines the interoperability of access control and security devices. Open Network Video Interface Forum Profile D & Profile M help access control devices connect with analytics.

Access control hardware which is designed for interoperability - with accessible APIs and SDKs for app integration - creates security which is ready for what’s next, even when predicting “what’s next” can be difficult.

The Wireless Access Control Report 2021 raises an important point from a cyber-security perspective: “…The integrations of disparate equipment types into a third-party platform can increase vulnerabilities, but it is less intrusive to update firmware for only one unified software application.”

“Other proponents go a step further, arguing that cyber security processes should also be merged with the security operations system. The ‘converged’ security approach brings in cyber security and physical security feeds and monitoring solutions, identifying everything from a traditional break-in attempt, through to network disruption due to hacking attempts.”

Hybrid working

Hybrid and fully remote work schedules are more commonplace than ever before, and to offer this kind of flexibility cost-effectively, a security provision must be able to adapt. Smarter use of space is an increasing focus of attention and priority as the trend is for employees to favour hybrid work patterns evolves.

To assist in a move to hybrid working, access control credentials can be authorised to unlock doors during specific timeframes, so staff can only enter when scheduled. Facility managers can regulate daily access so building occupancy stays within capacity.

Integrated electronic access control makes it easy with a single hub to issue, amend

and revoke access rights, streamlining the administration of a hybrid system.

Reducing costs

An integrated access control system generates critical data to understand building use, which could potentially reduce office rental costs. Therefore, if a space is not being used, valuable budget can be saved by not renting it.

Integrated systems transform data into knowledge, which allows organisations to be more considered and predictive when it comes to their security management, rather than reactive.

Sustainability

Extending a security system with integrationready wireless locking can contribute to any business’s energy efficiency or sustainability strategy.

Wireless electronic locks use less cabling and consume less energy at installation. Carrying a single, flexible credential stored securely on a mobile phone reduces the use of plastic cards and metal keys – and reduces the security risk from lost keys and cards.

Electric locks powered by energy-harvesting technology may even bring electricity consumed at the door down to zero, in contrast to traditional wired door locking such as a magnetic lock, which typically use power continuously.

Power and security

As the Wireless Access Control Report explains: “Platforms developed to open standards can improve the power and security of an access solution. If integrators can upgrade technologies and systems quickly, it minimises any risk of software being out of date.

“An API makes customisation straightforward: installers no longer wrestle with incompatible systems, because seamless, secure integration is built in from day one.”

OS Incedo

With this in mind, the Abloy OS Incedo platform has been developed to be an integration-led solution. Part of Abloy’s Security and Access Solutions Portfolio, OS INCEDO provides an enhanced solution for complete access management, connectivity, security and convenience, from anywhere in the world.

Online and offline control, wired and wireless locks, all operate within a single electronic access control system. From the site user’s perspective, one secure Seos credential operates every locking point.

OS Incedo adds operational efficiency by connecting all mechanical, electromechanical and digital solutions into one cloud-based

application. This includes PROTEC2 CLIQ, mobile access solutions and a wide range of mechanical key management features.

Cumulus

Cumulus enables mobile access for various security products, allowing organisations to upgrade their doors to operate without keys. The Bluetooth-connected Cumulus enables most electric locks and other electronic door-locking devices to open with a digital key on a mobile app instead of a physical credential such as a key, card or fob.

The controller works with both Abloy products and hardware of any brand, using compatible wiring. Security is enhanced because this small device can be installed inside a cabinet or behind a door. The locking mechanism is concealed and challenging to manipulate from the outside, offering enhanced security.

Cumulus is operated with the Abloy mobile app on the user’s mobile phone over a Bluetooth Low Energy connection. The device is compatible with numerous electric lock types, including electromechanical, electric, motorlocks, key deposits, swing handles, cylinders, electric strikes and latches.

The controller is designed for commercial properties and public spaces, including commercial buildings and offices, parcel deliveries, cash-in-transit, and construction. It can be managed with Abloy OS INCEDO or by integrating with a third-party system.

Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C.

Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options. Score: 8.5/10

The DC-S6283HRXL dome is an external IP66, IK10 rated, 1/2” CMOS 2MP Lightmaster PTZ ONVIF compliant dome with 36 times zoom lens and long range IR capability.

Review: A well featured PTZ dome with simple setup, excellent optical performance and enhanced IR illumination. Score: 8/10

Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DPZ

Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°.

Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

AVA – DOME W-4K-30

The AVA dome is an NDAA compliant vandal resistant (IK10) day /night IP66 dome for indoor or outdoor use with 4K imaging, built-in microphones and edge analytics. The dome uses Cloud connectivity to provide simple set-up and management.

Review: A well-engineered dome with impressive analytics capabilities and straightforward secure connectivity. Ideal for diverse or centralised systems with flexible notifications that can be received and managed from anywhere with available internet access. Score: 8.5/10

This IP67, 8MP bullet camera is from the Hikvision ColorVu range. It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options.

Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10

Serage – SRDNC5FW Dome

The Serage SRDNC5FW from G-TEC is an IP66 ‘Turret’ style 5MP dome with a fixed 2.8mm lens. It is based around a 1/2.7” high sensitivity sensor coupled with an F1.0 lens to give good colour images in low light. Visible and infrared illumination is built in, and a microphone provides audio. AI based video and audio detection is included.

Review: A very good all-round performance from this compact dome camera. Excellent colour image quality in very low light levels and flexible detection and analytic capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Oncam – C-12 Indoor

This internal 360° view camera designed for ceiling or wall mounting, is based on a 12MP sensor and provides a fisheye image with a wide range of configuration options.

Review: A very powerful compact fisheye view camera compatible with a wide range of video management systems with simplicity of installation and good support documentation. Score: 8.5/10

Dahua – TiOC 2.0

The DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution.

Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – PNM-C7083RVD

The PNM-C7083RVD multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. The cameras provide AI object classification analytics and low light operation. They are IP66 & NEMA4X environmentally rated with an IK10 impact protection rating.

Review: An impressive and very flexible dual camera unit that is easy to install, configure and maintain. Score: 9/10

Hikvision – AX Pro

The AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones.

Review: A compact wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with home-automation systems. Score: 8.5/10

Pyronix – MCEXTERNAL-WE

This tamperproof and weatherproof contact extends perimeter protection applications to securing sheds, garages, gates etc, with remote voice push notification alerts via the smart device apps, HomeControl2.0 and ProControl+. Featuring an IP66 rating, this discreet and versatile Grade 2 device is described as easy to fit and calibrate.

Review: The product is constructed very well. The casing is made of a hard polycarbonate with a deep grey (anthracite) finish which makes the door contact look great. The overall performance of the product did not disappoint during testing as it managed to maintain a high signal strength at all times as well as being very responsive. Score: 8.5/10

Ajax – MotionCam Outdoor

The Ajax MotionCam Outdoor is an IP 55 rated combined external PIR sensor with inbuilt capture camera for use with the latest Ajax Hubs that support visual verification. The detector has settings for the image resolution and number of pictures sent on alarm. After dark the unit has two high-intensity infrared LEDs to provide illumination for the camera’s monochrome mode.

Review: A very simple to install and manage, extended battery life external PIR detector for Ajax based Hub 2 systems, with the advantage of visual verification. Score: 9/10

Eaton – i-on10 KP

The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations.

Review: A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product. Score: 9/10

CSL – MiniAir 2

MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails.

Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. Score: 9/10

Capture motion detectors are intended for use in a wide variety of professional security applications. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments.

Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10

TRENDnet – TI-BEP200

The 2-Port Industrial Outdoor Gigabit Active/Passive PoE+ Extender, model TI-BEP200 from TRENDnet enables installers to extend up to two PoE+ signals an additional 100m for a total PoE distance of 200m or up to 500m with daisy chained units.

Review: The unit is suitable for industrial application where external installation is required as it is constructed of heavy-duty material, enamel coated and IP67 rated with built in 4kV surge protector and surface earthing clamp. Score: 7.5/10

Videoloft – Cloud Adapter 8

The Videoloft Cloud Adapter 8 is an eight channel bridging device which equips new and legacy video surveillance systems with Videoloft’s offsite cloud video solution.

Review: It is a very cost effective solution for those looking to update existing systems, upgrade the overall storage solution, or wanting to connect independent cameras to a recording and viewing platform without the need for a recorder or controller. Score: 8.5/10

Wisenet – TID-600R

The Wisenet TID-600R is a compact IP65, IK08 intercom unit featuring a 1/2.8” 2MP camera with a very wide viewing angle and infrared support up to 5 metres. It supports SIP 2.0 connection, has a touchless call option, edge storage and ONVIF compliance. It measures 165(h) x 49(w) x 48(d) cm with a weight of 490g.

Review: This is an impressive SIP 2.0 intercom unit that can be used in a wide range of situations especially in healthcare, where the touch-free method to initiate a call reduces infection risks. The HD camera and its event recording options can provide excellent evidential images. Score: 9/10

2N – IP Style

This video intercom features a 10”touch display boosted by the Axis ARTPEC-7 processor, full-HD camera and WaveKey technology. The unit is rated IP65 and IK08, meaning that users can touch the display even if there is any water on its surface.

Paxton on display at The Security Event

Get hands-on with technology

Paxton’s other access control technologies will be demonstrated using the tried and tested method at previous exhibitions. They will utilise technology displays along with interactive demos that will allow installers to get hands-on with the products as Dan explains:

“There will be dedicated demonstration areas for each of our four major products. Our approach for showing the features and benefits of Paxton technologies at events is to display. For example, Net2 will be displayed along with a fully interactive demonstration of the software and hardware. Installers will then be able to see the capabilities of our systems and the potential of using them for various applications.”

This year Paxton will be exhibiting at The Security Event in Birmingham from 25–27th April 2023, showcasing their four major access control solutions

The main thrust of the event will be a range of Paxton’s technologies including Net2, their flagship access control solution, Paxton 10, the next generation of access control and video management, Entry, the video entry system, and PaxLock, the smart wireless door handles range. Additionally, Paxton will show their new offerings at TSE, which are their brandnew installer loyalty programme Paxton Rewards and a preview of their new door entry app.

What’s new?

The most recent launch in the company’s portfolio is Paxton Rewards, a rewards programme that gives installers points for purchasing Paxton products, attending training sessions or sharing information such as case studies. The programme, along with various items of merchandise that can be claimed with points, will be on display at the event via an informative video presentation.

Also on the stand will be a wall focusing entirely on Paxton’s key integration partners and the potential applications as a result of the association that other security systems manufacturers have with Paxton. These include biometric video entry, video management, visitor management and many more solutions.

Dan says: “Partnerships with other manufacturers cover a wealth of disciplines and enable visitors to get a close look at the solutions that can be achieved by combining our technology with third-party systems. This helps make innovative security simple - an important driver for Paxton.”

Growing with customers

In addition to product demonstrations, installers will be invited to sign up for Paxton’s in-person training and they will be entered into daily draws for a chance to win an ultimate installer kit. Paxton is also keen to develop and grow together with their customers by better understanding their changing needs. Visitors to the stand will also be able to enter a prize draw by taking part in a short, on-stand survey.

Paxton will also be focusing on technology that hasn’t even been launched yet as Dan Drayton, Divisional Director of Sales – EMEA, explains that the company is bringing a brandnew innovation to the show. He says: “Alongside all of the existing technology and initiatives, we will also be demonstrating our upcoming Paxton Entry app which will be launched soon. This development brings smart devices into our Entry range, enabling users to receive notifications and take access calls on their phones in addition to, or as a replacement for a fixed monitor. That’s a feature we’ve been looking forward to bringing to the market and one that I think will prove extremely popular.”
