o yet again we’re focusing on the pandemic in this column, but this time it is with a Freedom Day successfully reached and passed. Unlike the first Freedom Day in June, which passed us by without any change only to be postponed for a month, the second date arrived and.... not a lot changed then either. As I write this, plenty of shops and hospitality venues still require social distancing and mask wearing (although now it’s only “recommended” rather than obligatory for many) plus a large number of people are now self-isolating, so there is a feeling that another lockdown could be on its way later in the year if the stats don’t start improving soon. All of which means that those who purchased security technologies repurposed for spotting higher temperatures among site visitors for example will probably get more use out of the kit than they may have expected when they initially looked into installing measures to protect anyone in the building. It’s likely that, as Michael Lawrence of ADI Global Distribution told me earlier this year, Covid isn’t going away so we’ll probably have to get used to seeing temperature monitoring systems and the like for the foreseeable future, especially in crowded areas. However you might well have seen that initial surge for Covidrelated technology die off as customers have found alternative, cheaper, methods of doing the same task, meaning that some systems won’t have a long service record ahead. For example I don’t think that there will be a long future for people counting technology in the wider world. What started off as a great idea for keeping tabs on the numbers of shoppers in the store has now been replaced, certainly in most of the outlets I’ve visited recently, by a security guard or staff member using a handheld clicker counter. Also the widespread use of the NHS app and QR codes has helped venues stay on top of their obligations to record the movement of people - no clever AI-driven cameras needed for that. And of course the analytics that spot non-mask wearers has probably seen its zenith of usefulness given that it currently appears that sporting a face covering is no longer required to such a regimented level. Yet all is not lost for these systems, because as a reader of PSI you’ll know that the future of security systems is heavily software based, so much of the hardware can be redeployed, as and when, with the addition of new analytics and functionality. And whatever trend or issue does come next you can be assured that there will be analytics developed to deal with it. But for now, it’s pretty much business as usual. Andy Clutton EDITOR 5

INDUSTRY NEWS Panasonic makes changes to its security business Panasonic Europe B.V. and Panasonic System Communications Company Europe (PSCEU) have announced the transfer of the European Security and Industrial Medical Vision (IMV) businesses, currently part of PSCEU, into a newly founded independent company, i-PRO EMEA B.V. (i-PRO EMEA). The new company will formally start its operations from 1 October 2021, and will be part of the Japan-based Panasonic i-PRO Sensing Solutions Co (PIPS). “We have grown the European Security and IMV Businesses substantially thanks to the close and successful collaboration with our strong partner network and I would like to thank them for their ongoing support. Due to a
global change in the strategic direction of PSCEU, we have been looking for a company to collaborate with that can successfully continue and develop our Security and IMV businesses to meet the future requirements of the market and customers. We think that PIPS is the best choice to lead this business into a flourishing future,” said Hiroyuki Nishiuma, MD, PSCEU. “We are very pleased to have established a new i-PRO site in Europe. Establishing i-PRO EMEA is a major step towards the further growth of i-PRO globally,” said Masato Nakao, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Panasonic iPRO Sensing Solutions Co. Banham Academy gains IET approval for apprentice scheme Banham Academy has announced that it has an approved apprenticeship scheme with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The approval will allow all apprentices through the Academy to apply for the Engineering Technician Registration, providing

them with vital credentials and the letters ‘ENG Tech TMIET’ after their names. Furthermore, says Banham, it provides employers with a competitive edge in the workforce by their employees officially being recognised and accredited by the IET as engineering technicians. The IET approval process involves an assessment by trained and experienced engineers who consider a range of evidence including roles undertaken by apprentices, how the scheme supports the wider business and mentoring and support available to apprentices. Kevin Faulkner, Head of Banham Academy, said: “I am thrilled we are the first training provider in the security industry to be awarded with approval from the IET. This incredibly important IET accreditation will mean our apprentices graduate with even more confidence and value as they embark on their careers as engineers.”

SERC fire engineering apprentice of the year is announced as Megan Davidson This year’s South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) Fire Engineering Apprentice of the Year, sponsored by Nittan Europe, was recently named as Megan Davidson, who was presented with the trophy alongside 2020 winner Adam Smylie who was unable to collect his award last year due to Covid restrictions. Stuart Rankin, Deputy Head of School for Construction, Engineering Services and Skills for Work at SERC, said “Both of these students have represented the college and their employers at regional and national level. They are excellent apprentices within the college and a real asset to their employers. Both were very deserving of the award”. He added: “On behalf of the college I would like to send my thanks to Nittan for support and arranging the ‘Nittan Shield’.” SERC, based in Northern Ireland, provides a range of courses, apprenticeships and professional development training. The college has close links with fire and security companies, which enables students and apprentices on relevant programmes to gain valuable knowledge and experience. Tutored by Fire and Security Lecturer Robin Hamill, the fire alarm apprenticeship programme requires students to attend SERC one day a week for four years whilst working towards Level 2 and Level 3 City & Guilds in Electronic Security and Emergency Systems qualifications. To recognise the apprentice who has worked the hardest and excelled in all levels – but not necessarily the person who has the highest grades – the Fire Engineering Apprentice of the Year award was introduced in 2020 and will be sponsored by Nittan until 2025. Nittan Regional Sales Manager (North) Steve McCarley said: “Now more than ever, we need to ensure young people have the training resources they need to be able to learn and develop their skills. The fire industry represents a good career choice with engineers always in demand. We value the work being done by SERC, and by our Elite Partner installers such as Solutions for Systems who take the time to support these apprentices.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Pauline Norstrom, CEO of Anekanta Consulting, an AI innovation and strategic advisory company working with international defence, security businesses and stakeholders. Pauline was previously BSIA Chair, is now an Honorary member advising the board. Pauline is considered an expert on all things CCTV and AI in Video Surveillance. What role is video playing in the current COVID world and what opportunities are there for Installers? The exodus from the office environment caused an increase in empty and partially occupied buildings, increasing vulnerabilities for all sorts of crime. Video plays an important role in providing situational awareness remotely and informs a fast and effective response. We anticipate that there will be an increase in camera deployments on otherwise alarm-only buildings, thus enabling security monitoring to become more proactive around the perimeter and to play a vital role in public safety. Video is most valuable when installers combine it with other sensor data such as access control and alarm events. Installers should consider seizing the opportunity to offer video verified alarms given that both edge sensor and cloud technology are so easy to access, especially when underpinned by robust and cyber secure communications technology. By adding cloud-based video services, the installer can create increased value for the user and generate extra recurring revenue for themselves. Adding this functionality, with minimal disruption, also increases up-time and lowers the total cost of ownership. Video is playing an increasingly important role in the COVID world by making spaces contactless, such as automated facial recognition software used for access control purposes. In retail and hospitality, video-based occupancy monitoring has become commonplace in managing COVID risks. The technology can reduce the manual burden of counting in and out the number of shoppers in a store. It is my belief that COVID has caused an almost “wartime-like” acceleration in the development and acceptance of video and cloud-based technologies. We also need to accept that COVID is probably here to stay, therefore the need for video combined with other sensors to create safe, contactless environments can only increase. What differences can concepts like AI (Artificial Intelligence) and DLVA (Deep Learning Video Analytics) make in terms of CCTV? AI has really come into its own in physical security technology over the last 12-24 months. But this did not happen overnight. Many tries and fails over many decades and billions of dollars of investments led to the emergence of usable technology. The early attempts to recognise objects in images were unreliable and required weeks and months of fine tuning to remove unwanted alerts. These early technologies relied upon comparison images which were manually categorised and labelled. The AI would generate its best attempt at finding a match in the image with varying degrees of success. The application of AI has matured and evolved since then, as has the processing technology and image quality leading to the advent of deep learning networks which improve their results over time.
Deep learning AI is now deployed within cameras at the edge to detect or track an object of interest and discard non-useful information. The cameras can also operate as a collective intelligence, providing information to each other to provide a complete picture of the situation. Developments in adjacent industries such as autonomous vehicles which require sensor fusion, and 360-degree vision are overlapping with the security industry as the silicon providers look to new markets for growth. AI based object filtering can reduce unwanted alarms that may be generated from basic video motion detection, making video surveillance more effective. AI can add even more value when deployed in the cloud and make it possible to access various siloed data sources. APIs play an essential role in providing secure access to otherwise closed databases and allow analysis across multiple data sources. The benefits achieved from the use of AI range from lower storage costs to reduced unwanted alarm events and more useful intelligence. This means less time utilised reviewing and more time for action to reduce loss. The use of AI extends further into managing the operational uptime of video surveillance systems though predictive maintenance and management of product failures and the introduction of smart scheduling to improve engineer efficiency. What does the future look like in terms of Video Surveillance? I see a continuation of the progression towards the upgrade of older, low-quality cameras to higher resolution smart cameras which contain AI processing at the edge. Such cameras can be much more proactive in reducing and preventing crime. AIs have evolved to become extremely good at processing low grade images and add value without a hardware swap. However, it is inevitable that lowquality cameras will eventually fail as higher resolution will win-out and ultimately force legacy infrastructures to upgrade.

Wireless technology and 4G/5G networks open-up the potential to deploy video in more difficult or expensive to cable locations, whilst avoiding ingress and disruption of the corporate network. Drone and satellite video will play an increasing part in the rapid deployment of responsive solutions and counter terrorism activities. The advent of cloud AI processing will lead to the increased use of video surveillance images for other purposes such as safety and processing monitoring. Video will become a data commodity which increases in value as it becomes more easily transferrable between applications. This opens a host of privacy and cyber security concerns for organisations. The strong component of video surveillance regulation contained within the proposed EU AI Act will result in greater accountability of technology providers and users and a shared responsibility throughout the supply chain. This should drive up the acceptance and use of AI based video surveillance products through transparency and trust in the way they are developed and used. Recent high-profile breaches, such as the release of the footage of then Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, show that regulation is needed to serve to deter others who may seek to gain personally out of privacy breaches. Such action combined or aligned with a response from the industry, could serve to rebuild any lost trust in the video surveillance process arising from this case.
One recent example that comes to mind is the disorder at Wembley Stadium for the Euro 2020 final. Facial recognition technology could play a part in any future measures. A simple anonymised facial recognition check against tickets could have helped to avert the issue more quickly and safely. Providing information about the location of ticketless fans and enabling focused, strategic action by the security leadership. Upstream of the breach, predictive AI

Steven boasts a wealth of industry knowledge and a thorough understanding of the different functions within the business, having worked for Door Group for 14 years in various departments such as the Stores, the Estimating Team, the Trade Department and Sales. After a brief role elsewhere, he returned to the business earlier this year, with renewed focus and ambition. he Satel Agate unit is an externally rated (IP54) “curtain” format intrusion detector designed for perimeter protection. It utilises two sensors, passive infrared and microwave, and meets the requirements of Grade 3 when wall mounted indoors.

The connections are all positioned at the top of the circuit board. With the first two for Tamper (N/C) contacts, then remote LED control input, +12v power in, Common, Alarm Output (N/C) pair and Anti-Masking output (N/C) pair. These nine screw terminals are around 2.7mm wide so a standard terminal driver will not fit. While the unit is very well built and of compact size, there is very limited space for cable dressing within the case. Two plastic clips hold the pcb into the case back and allow it to be removed for fixing. A closefitting seal around the case is continued around the mounting holes to help seal the fixing points. The unit is powered from a 12v DC source ±15% and has a maximum current demand of 25mA (21mA quiescent). The microwave frequency is stated as 24.125GHz. At power-up a tricolour LED flashes red, green and blue alternately for around 45 seconds as the device configures itself. The device has a recommended installation height of 2.4 metres and is given a maximum range of 14 metres. When used outdoors it is advised to provide shelter from extreme weather and that the optical anti-masking should not be used as this can be triggered by poor visibility conditions. A right-angle bracket is supplied for side mounting, however, this would not be Grade 3 compliant.

To enter its walk-test mode, you must power the device up with the LED link in place and then remove the link during the 45 second “warm up” time. This puts the unit into Microwave test mode. The LED then flashes Green after the warmup time and can be walk tested for range and positioning. Alternatively removing the link and then adding it during the warmup time will enter the unit into its PIR test mode. This is indicated by the LED flashing Blue every 3 seconds. The LED will then flash every 3 seconds to show which device is being tested, either green for the microwave or Blue for the PIR. The alarm output will be activated by the single sensor during this test mode. The device sensitivity is set using the two potentiometers, clockwise to
Satel – Agate increase. Normal operation is restored after a power cycle, or the test mode will time-out after around 20 minutes. Following the testing and re-fitting of the cover, a power-cycle should be performed to restore normal operation and re-configure the anti-mask detection system. The anti-mask delay time is a little more involved in that the 1-second default to approximately 60 seconds maximum is set by the relationship of the sensitivity potentiometers, these are set to opposite extremes at power-up with the LED link in place for 60 seconds and absent for the 1 second default. The manual suggests that the value can be increased from 1 second but a range of tests only resulted in either 1 or 60 being achieved.
Performance With the LED enabled, the tricolour LED indicates the status of the sensors with Red illuminated for 2 seconds to indicate an alarm; meaning both sensors have been triggered within 5 seconds. Green for four seconds shows when just the microwave sensor is triggered and Blue for four seconds for the PIR sensor. The LED will also display as Red for the duration of a “trouble” condition such as low supply voltage. The alarm outputs are fed from Opto-coupled MOS active relay devices. These have an on resistance of approximately 7-ohms and are linked by an 18-ohm resistor giving a 25-ohm quiescent resistance that goes open on alarm. There is no option for changing resistance values on the pcb. The microwave device has a relatively wide capture footprint, with the narrow curtain profile governed by the PIR’s lens arrangement. The 14metre range was achieved in testing with only a limited exclusion area beneath the sensor. The anti-masking feature quickly detected lens obscuring such as from paint spray but did not react to enclosing or covering the unit. This appeared to be due to the recessed infrared optical arrangement used for such detection that needed to be directly impacted.

Expanding business This month we talk to Michael Lawrence, Regional General Manager UK&I at ADI Global Distribution to find out more about the company’s move into a new technology market sector and its plans for the future SI caught up with Michael last year just after the first lockdown ended in the summer, which meant that the second one wasn't even in anyone's mind at the time. This time around we met him just before the originally proposed Freedom Day of June 21st to find out what had happened with ADI since our 2020 chat.

How did the market fare during lockdowns? The business has done really well through the pandemic staying open throughout, which was really pleasing and I think we've seen a level of resiliency, in a similar way to what the whole industry has. We lost minimal trading time at a couple of our branches as a result of the need for staff to isolate. The businesses itself has really been positive and we've continued to launch new brands and new products in that time. In addition, we have continued to invest, both in terms of people and infrastructure and as we're now [at the time of the interview] coming out of Q2, we're really positive about the future. You didn’t even reduce the number of staff working in the warehouse? We've actually added heads into the UK business this year and we've continued our expansion into Ireland adding heads there too. Our overall inventory investment in the business has increased quite substantially and that is enabled by the fact we've been in a purposebuilt facility for nearly two years after we had outgrown our previous premises. And if you look at our expansion, particularly into the professional Audio and Visual range, with the likes of 86” and 100” large format displays, that is business we could only develop and invest in by having this new facility in Greater Manchester.

We have further branch relocations planned for later this year and over the next few years in addition to investing in refurbishments and upgrades in all locations. It’s great that the global ADI business is backing us financially with these investments. Five years on from the Brexit referendum has there been any impact on business or is the picture muddy due to the pandemic? Brexit in Q1 2021 caused challenges for any business that exported products out of the UK, or imported products from the UK. We have a global trade compliance function so with that skill set in-house we were able to mobilise quickly and our freight partners did a really good job. Like most businesses there were some challenges to overcome; moving product into Ireland was where we saw the main challenges, but problems with bringing products into the UK were quickly overcome. We were also able to help a number of our larger installers manage their cross border projects. As we see it today, Brexit isn't really on the agenda.

What will you do about branch design? Will you have product out front or not? The model in the Oldham branch and in our new branches in Kingsbury and Dublin are all of the 'new' style with stock displayed front of house to show installers the full range of products we can offer, supported by a substantial holding in

What about the impact of the component shortage? We're seeing it impact across a multitude of vendors and at different stages of manufacturing with availability challenges and lead time delays. Some of the shortages are obvious such as chip components, glass being used for vaccine vials rather than displays and monitors etc and of course there are container shortages stopping people from being able to bring product in from overseas. For our supply chain team it is now probably as challenging an environment as it has been through Brexit and when we relocated our hub. Managing availability and providing installers with access to everything we sell is probably is our daily number one challenge, it’s a green fee now in an increasingly competitive market. Nowadays you see plenty of companies working with multiple distributors, so is the day of the exclusive distribution deal over? Not entirely, we have exclusive deals with some manufacturers and brands, but I think the model has shifted where manufacturers want their product to be available to the broadest range possible. Therefore a multi-distributor option is viable, plus there are more distributors in the market now than there's ever been. It's a market in which we've seen more activity and acquisition recently than in the last ten-plus years. So I don't think it's a trend, it’s probably more the kind of a new reality. What I would say is that what the installer wants is convenience as they are time poor, managing multiple projects and it is that convenience that distributors must provide. What do you think of all the distributor acquisitions that have been made recently? The deals that we've seen completed have different strategic goals and they make sense
for different reasons. Some are going to require a significant amount of work where it is necessary to make two businesses become one - some will integrate more easily. What we have to do is offer customers a convenient solution and a best in class service offering so they continue to buy from us. Obviously it poses for us an element of competitive threat in that their offerings become much broader. It's a market that I think still has consolidation opportunities within it. You mentioned that you're moving into the pro AV side of things. Is that something that you think security installers will be looking at as well? The UK security market is quite saturated and I think we're all looking for that adjacent space that we can deliver double digit growth from. Audio and Visual has been incredibly successful in our North American business and we benefit from their backing and their expertise. A lot of our customers that install security systems also have Audio Visual interests or even Audio & Visual businesses that market themselves separately. Our approach is twofold; the first is to look at the services and products that we can offer to our existing customers, and secondly take more of a business development angle to Audio and Visual installers. What we're finding is when we identify those opportunities with Audio & Visual installers they are actually buying security as well. So there's definitely an adjacency and synergy between the two. A great example of this is in our Audio portfolio, brands like Bosch, Axis and Penton all have products that integrate directly into security applications. Will you look for other new sectors to move into or will you focus on developing the offering you currently have? One of the biggest success factors for us is being very good and what we need to be very good at. Of course there have been instances when we've not been quite where we needed to be and that cost us especially given the strong competitors in the market, but that was in the past. We are always on the lookout for new opportunities. Yes, there are things that we're looking at, but I think getting the investments in Ireland and professional Audio & Visual right is where our focus needs to be now.

Tips, tactics and statistics To take one positive out of the recent pandemic, spending the past year cooped up at home has led to a dramatic decrease in domestic burglary rates. What role does the installer have in keeping the numbers down? f course, with homeowners guaranteed to be present in their homes all day, every day, opportunistic criminals have taken a back seat, with a reported 28% drop in burglaries from March to May 2020 (Money Supermarket, 2020). But as government restrictions eased in June of last year, burglary rates quickly increased as people celebrated their freedom once more, leaving properties unattended and therefore at risk of opportunistic attacks. And with a similar situation being mirrored just one year on, experts are expecting a similar rise in burglary rates as we resume our normal lives out of lockdown. With this invaluable insight, it’s clear that it’s never been more important for homeowners to

make relevant updates to their home security to ensure their home’s not a target. But how can installers help their customers to prepare their home for the return to normality? Well, it’s all about educating them on the latest burglary tactics so they can ensure their home security stands up to the mark, throughout the summer and beyond. Sharing insight into the most recent burglary techniques across the country, Gavin Kirk, head of trade for Yale, spoke to PSI to highlight the key tactics installers should be made aware of to ensure their customers’ homes are as safe as houses.

"For burglars looking to make an opportunistic attack on a home, the front door can often be their first port of call," said Gavin. Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics revealed that 76% of household burglaries in England and Wales occurred when the culprit accessed the home through a door, highlighting how important it is for homeowners to make significant upgrades to their front door security. And these criminals don’t even have to use force to break into homes.

And with no need to break into a property, the thief can enter, take any money, jewellery, phones and car keys and leave in a matter of seconds."

Of course, the easiest piece of advice installers can give to homeowners is to ensure their door and windows are always locked, to help stop these opportunistic thieves in their tracks. "We would recommend installers communicate to their clients the importance of ensuring their door hardware meets the recommended three-star security rating imposed by the British Standards Institution," continues Gavin. "Installers should also advise they opt for high quality three-star cylinder products to ensure they are providing solutions with the maximum level of security. It’s essential that cylinders can protect against a range of known cylinder attacks including anti-pick, antibump and anti-drill to deter criminals and be strong enough to withstand harsh force." For ultimate safety, cylinders should be approved to TS007:2014 British Standard rating and endorsed by the Police Secured by Design scheme as an added level of reassurance for your customers.

Trade professionals can recommend prioritising outdoor security to their clients to ensure they’re not making their external spaces an easy target for thieves

Along with the front door, windows are also a key focus for thieves looking to make an easy entrance into homes. According to statistics, 28% of criminals enter a property via a window, with more than a third being granted even easier access through an unlocked one (The Eco Experts, 2020). And as windows can generally offer such a seamless entrance into someone’s home, installers can potentially recommend a window hardware upgrade to help homeowners deter would-be criminals. Gavin explained: "In 2021, burglars continue to look out for inferior window hardware, as general wear and tear can often reduce its protection, offering easy pickings for the
modern-day criminal. As a professional installer, recommending a new door and window package is not only a profitable suggestion, but also helps to protect against any burglary attacks." As with a door, a high-quality window handle should offer a two-star level of protection, the highest level for protective window furniture, along with the BSI Kitemark and Secured by Design approval. High quality window handles should also be weatherproof to withstand years of wear and tear and ensure they can stand up to the mark when it comes to a new range of burglary attack techniques.
Secure outdoors
A homeowner’s garden is a prime target for thieves looking to make a burglary worth their while. With expensive outdoor equipment, bicycles and garden furniture making easy pickings for criminals, gardens are another essential area of focus for protecting homes. Although lockdown signalled a decrease in domestic burglaries, figures from insurer Admiral revealed a 66% increase in bicycle theft claims from March 2020. With these statistics coming to light, trade professionals can recommend prioritising outdoor security to their clients to ensure they’re not making their external spaces an easy target for thieves. "Gardens are, of course, a great space for criminals to move around the perimeter of a property undetected," says Gavin. "Trees, bushes and sheds offer perfect hiding spots, so night-time attacks are still preferred by thieves in 2021 and according to Nimble Fins Insurance, 58% of burglaries happen under the cover of darkness." With the late evening, between 10pm and midnight, the prime time for crime, security cameras with night vision capabilities help to deter criminals from making a home their next target. As recent statistics have highlighted that £926 million in home insurance claims were made throughout 2020, with an average of £2.5 million worth of belongings stolen each day (Churchill Home Insurance), now’s the perfect time to suggest a home security makeover to your clients. By offering a range of tips and advice to homeowners, installers can not only create trusted relationships with their customers, but also look to upsell by suggesting a variety of products that will help offer protection to their homes.

Apps and access control Reduced risk “Research shows that users are less likely to forget their smart devices than a security pass, access token or fob,” says Caroline Cooper at Norbain. “It’s one less thing to remember to bring with you to work. They are likely to take better care of their smart device because it is personally valuable to them and/or incorporates other benefits such as the ability to manage work calls/emails/systems. “A security system is immediately compromised when a user loses their traditional access mechanism.”
Cost savings Whilst it’s still early days for ‘smart credentials’ technology adoption within access control solutions, its popularity is on the increase and with good reason sing smart devices removes the need for access cards, tokens or fobs to be issued. The user downloads an app or token onto their smart device, enabling them to gain access to a building or site by using something they are already carrying around (their smart phone or watch), rather than a separate card, token or fob. When the user wishes to gain access, a secure app is activated on their mobile device (normally by the device being in proximity to a credentials reader). The information which establishes access rights is transmitted through the air – as a digital credential. If the prerequisite conditions are met, access is permitted. In today’s world of convenience, this is right up there. According to Buzz Coates of Norbain, along with offering the ultimate convenience, there’s one advantage in particular that could drive long term acceptance of smart credentials within access control over alternative solutions, the environment. “In their current format, many access control solutions rely heavily on single use plastic,” says Buzz. “Within the Paris Climate Change Agreement, governments around the world have committed to reducing their country’s impact on Climate Change and the UK Government has just pledged to reduce emissions by 68% by 2030.” This is just one argument that a security installer could consider when discussing access control solutions with customers. There is a cost associated with replacing lost or stolen access mechanisms for organisations, both physically and in terms of managing a system of re-issuing or updating security cards, fobs, etc. “Credentials within a smart device can be automatically updated and are less likely to be lost or stolen because users take better care of them generally,” explains Caroline. “This reduces the overall cost of ownerships of the access control solution.” Even if some of the costs can be recouped, e.g. on a university campus by charging students when they are issues with an access device, there are still administration costs. Cloud-based management portals allow administrators to create, manage, issue and revoke credentials.
Reduced maintenance Smart credential solutions normally work through a cloud hosted platform, therefore allowing ongoing maintenance to be carried out remotely, with alerts in place for anomalies and the ability to quickly see exactly where a problem has occurred, reducing the time to fix it. We design, install and maintain converged life safety, security and communications systems that protect a range of people, places and spaces. One of our main customer sectors is retirement villages but we also work with universities, the Ministry of Defence and local authorities protecting public spaces such as town centres. Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? Absolutely. In order for us to be the best in the business we need to have multi-skilled engineers but they are incredibly hard to find at the moment. That’s why we’re launching the TIS academy, a training programme which nurtures young talent in engineering. We’re recruiting apprentices and recent graduates through our

What is the best thing about working in this industry? The most exciting thing about the industry is the level of technological innovation and development we’re experiencing at the moment. It’s very fast moving. When I joined 15 years ago, our industry was still very analog (and still is very much so in certain aspects), but since the rise of smart technology and home systems alongside the industry’s and governmental response to heartbreaking incidents like Grenfell, technological innovations in the security and safety sector are moving at a rapid pace. We’re very much at the forefront of the movement and see it as essential in ensuring TIS helps to protect our customers’ people, places and spaces.

programme and have recently onboarded three new members of staff through the Government’s Kickstart Scheme. It’s important to me that we’re investing in young talent and giving people the best possible start to their careers, particularly given the rates of youth unemployment following the pandemic. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? (ie impossible expectations) We manage expectations and understand what customers want in-depth during the consultation phases so that there will never be any nasty surprises at any stage of the project. Our customers know they can call me or the wider team at any given time. I believe if you keep open, regular and honest communication - even in the rare instance that it’s bad news - people tend to be happy. What is the security/fire industry’s biggest myth? I think people sometimes underestimate the level of technological advancements in the sector, which leads to a slight misconception about what we do. Often, people think we just offer manned security or install fire alarms and sprinklers. For TIS, it’s much more about smart technologies and other high-tech integrated solutions. I’ve found that our customers and potential customers get pretty excited when they learn about what we can actually do for them. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Smart technology has had a hugely positive impact on our business. Take retirement villages, for example. We’re able to offer a range of technological solutions to everyday problems by 30
installing things such as sensors to check whether a resident has opened their medication cupboard to take their meds each morning, or has pressed the “I’m Okay” button rather than requiring someone to physically go and knock on their door and check on them. We’re also rolling out wearable tech, like smart watches, so that residents can access support or check-in in a much more user friendly way. Smart technology is giving residents much more freedom and the retirement villages the ability to spend their money much more effectively. What would make your job easier? More staff! We’re growing fast and we need to build out our team with the very best in engineering to support that growth. Over the years we’ve invested a lot into making TIS a supportive and exciting place to work so we get a lot of inbound interest from potential candidates. We’re focused on bringing in the best new talent and continuing the training of those who have had their skin in the game a little longer. I’m really excited about a new product that our engineers and designers have been busy developing in-house. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? To stay focused. When I was starting out in my career I wanted to do everything and explore every potential business opportunity. As I’ve progressed though, I realised it’s far more efficient and effective to focus on what your team is good at, what the market needs and then stick to your strategy. It’s all about doing a few things very very well, as opposed to more of a scattergun approach. Will England ever win the World Cup again? What I love is that football in this country, both men’s and women’s, is progressing in the right direction. We’ve got strong men’s and women’s teams and I’d obviously love them to go all the way and win a World Cup. However, I’ve been stung one too many times to commit. My heart’s in it though! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? Treat the team to a huge party (when we can do that again) to say thanks for their absolutely incredible work this year. Because we work directly onsite with retirement villages, care
homes and universities our team are deemed essential key workers. The team did everything they could to ensure our customers and their spaces were COVID-19 secure as quickly as possible and they did so with kids at home at a very unusual time. Needless to say, we’ll be throwing a party when we can all gather again.

A smarter approach to security With holidays finally back on the agenda, many homeowners will be leaving their property unoccupied for the first time in months. Sumier Foster-Shah of ERA, shares an insight into how smart security systems and app-based surveillance can provide protection and peace of mind s the nation’s vaccine rollout continues apace, families are making the most of the summer season by booking much-needed holidays, with many popular destinations across the UK reporting near-capacity occupancy levels. For many homeowners, this will be the first time in nearly 18 months that they have left their property for an extended period of time. And for those who have taken advantage of the government’s Stamp Duty Holiday and moved house during lockdown, this may also be the first time they are leaving their new property unattended. This return to more normal pre-Covid lifestyles and routines may prompt many homeowners to re-evaluate their property’s security. The nation has a newfound appreciation for our homes and their contents, and many householders will have made home improvements or invested in high-value items, all of which they will be keen to protect, when they once again go on their travels. For owners of new homes who have inherited security systems from the previous owners, they may have limited understanding of how they work or whether they meet their specific security and lifestyle needs. For customers in these situations, smart appbased security systems offer many benefits that will deliver protection not only for the summer season, but for many years to come. Options include high quality video, internal and external, night vision and smart integration with various connected voice-activated devices such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa, together with mobile apps. Within a home, window blinds can be adjusted according to the weather outside, they go down as the sun sets and the lights switch to aid better navigation. A smart light control system can monitor the lights in individual rooms across the entire house. Heating and cooling systems can follow a similar, integrated design, all with maximum energy saving benefits. But in the smart security evolution, it is also about simplifying the installation process to enable the opportunity to design and offer smart technology, then integrate and configure it to offer homeowner’s ultimate peace of mind.

Training for the future David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security looks at technical training courses for the security industry
H
aving worked with fire and security companies across the UK, I see firsthand the difficulties in attracting and retaining engineers. Due to the skills shortage/crisis, we see the quality of work decrease, availability of labour decrease, and staff wages increase. Skills shortages can be cancerous, and although we are doing good work in developing new talent across the sector - where numbers have quadruple in less than two years - we must now look at how we can develop our existing workforce, which should in turn help you attract and retain engineers. During the first lockdown, which seems like a lifetime ago, Skills for Security released free technical training webinars that were specific for those operating in the sector. The courses covered advanced signalling, which included grading, compliance with standards and the digital switch off, plus Intruder Alarm, CCTV and Fire Surveying and Design courses which included carrying out risk assessments, creating operational requirements, and again compliance with the standards. Since then, in partnership with IFSEC and FIREX, we have developed a range of bespoke online CPD accredited technical courses that are available 24/7. Engineers can self-enrol onto the courses. The courses themselves are automatically marked and certificated, a process that is both is effective and efficient. The reasoning behind this was to make training accessible. Skills for Security fully appreciate the busy lifestyles that everyone lives these days, so training needs to be accessible at a time that suits the learner. Since this initial release, we have also created a cybersecurity course, which focuses on the key aspects that engineers need to consider when installing, maintaining security systems when the systems are integrated on end-users networks. In addition, we have produced an Access Control Survey and Design course, which looks at risk assessments, grading/levelling and compliance. Since last year over 8,000 people have completed these online technical courses. Skills for Security are not the only organisation offering technical competence training. Tavcom, who are BSIA members, also have a vast range of courses specifically designed to upskill engineers. Unmanned train depots secured by Video Analytics Southeastern Rail Network operates train services between London, Kent and parts of East Sussex. It is one of the busiest networks in the country, transporting 640,000 passengers each weekday on its 392 trains, which are temporarily housed in 12 depots situated around South-East England. Some of these depots are unmanned, and therefore require intelligent security solutions. Bosch Security System’s Integration Partner, Taylor Technology Systems, were tasked with upgrading the entire video surveillance system across the 12 depots. Integriti update includes biometrics and real time location tracking Access control and security system designer and manufacturer Inner Range has released the Version 21 update for its Enterprise-level system Integriti, which includes integrations with Suprema biometrics and Quuppa real time location tracking. The new integration with Suprema allows users to add thumb and face scans as access credentials, which can be used in addition to smartcards and PIN for high security with trouble-free access. The integration with Quuppa means tagged information from the Quuppa system can be associated with Integriti entities, allowing direct control of the asset from either system. The asset could be an object, or a user associated with it. The location of tagged assets can be made visible on Integriti’s schematic of the site, alongside all other access and security devices. Two external detectors in one The recent Ajax Special Event announced a number of new technologies being released to the professional security sector in 2021. Here we take a closer look at one of the new systems utdoor detectors can often be a pain for professionals. Natural disruptions, heat, rain, and snow trigger a lot of false alarms. The new Ajax product range includes the DualCurtain Outdoor detector which boasts a 30m range with two PIRs on each side covering 15m. The Grade 2 unit uses two PIRs and threestep signal analysis to detect intruders, eliminate blindspots and combat false triggers such as from pets, plants etc.

Two detectors in one body Each DualCurtain Outdoor utilises a SmartBracket mounting panel allowing installers to securely attach the detector to a surface while closing the setup panel. The sides of the detector are adjusted independently. With the controls on the back panel, the detection distance for each side, detection activation in the area near a detector, and the vertical shift of the viewing sector by 3° so that sections protruding from the facade do not obstruct the view of the detector can all be determined. In the Ajax app, each side of the detector can be controlled separately: enable/disable IR or masking sensors, make them permanently active regardless of the armed mode, and adjust the sensitivity. The app allows interaction with the detector to set entry/exit delays, link the sirens activation to a certain side, or create an automation scenario for a detector alarm. DualCurtain Outdoor protects the most remote areas thanks to a connection range of up to 1,700 meters from the hub. And at complex sites, ReX signal range extenders can help build robust perimeter protection regardless of scale.
Double filtering Two IR sensors on each side make the unit effective against false alarms. The detector does not react if only one sensor has detected movement. When both sensors are triggered, the detector activates the digital algorithm ELSA. In a fraction of a second, ELSA performs a three-step signal analysis, filtering out natural

Curtain detector evolution To extend the protected area, when the Near Area Detection is turned on, the upper IR sensor of the detector receives an additional narrow sector of view, directed at the angle of 40 degrees down. This helps to detect the motion when there is an attempted intrusion closely to the unit itself, solving the problem of the blind spot (a typical problem of such detectors). This patented technology is ideal for the protection of facades and complex architectural structures. The system is protected against sabotage as any problems, such as attempts to disable the detector or a low battery, will be immediately reported by the system to the users and the security company. The detector is also equipped with a tamper button that reacts to removal from the mount and detachment of DualCurtain Outdoor from the surface. And thanks to the configurable hub detector polling interval, the system is able to identify a connection loss with DualCurtain Outdoor in less than a minute. The detector meets Grade 2 in accordance with the EN 50131 standard and is equipped with an anti-masking system that detects attempts to block the view or paint over the lenses.

As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input in the test reports or results Bosch – Flexidome NDE-3503-AL Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C. Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options.
IDIS – DC-S6283HRXL The DC-S6283HRXL dome is an external IP66, IK10 rated, 1/2” CMOS 2MP Lightmaster PTZ ONVIF compliant dome with 36 times zoom lens and long range IR capability. Review: A well featured PTZ dome with simple setup, excellent optical performance and enhanced IR illumination.
Concept Pro – CP-HSD20-AHD This Concept Pro IP66 IK10 rated speed-dome is based on the Starvis 1/2.8” CMOS sensor, giving a 2MP (1920 x 1080p) image with a 20x zoom lens and in-built infrared illuminators with a stated range of up to 150 metres. A 30x zoom version is also available. The camera provides outputs for all the main analogue HD formats such as AHD, CVI, TVI along with the digital over coax SDI standard. Review: An interesting highly sensitive HD speed dome that gives a potentially easy route to changing from analogue HD to IP based viewing and control, compatible with all key analogue HD systems. Some of the camera’s core configuration options are not currently accessible via the browser but possibly may be included in a future firmware version.
Luxrite – SPR0DHIPD80 The SPRO DHIPD80 “Turret” style camera is an IP67 externally rated 8MP (4k) camera with a 2.8mm fixed lens, “ColourNight” operation and Active Deterrence capability. It has a built-in speaker and microphone along with external audio connection and alarm input and output. Review: A very sensitive “Turret” style camera with high definition and some excellent features for deterring intruders.

Hikvision – DS-2CD4A26FWD This camera is a high-end outdoor bullet camera identified as part of Hikvision’s DarkFighter range. The camera offers very high sensitivity and 1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide video analytic functions. These can be selected from options including Audio Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance, Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection. Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its built-in Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Tyco – Illustra Flex IFS02P6INWIT This Indoor HD PTZ dome is from the Illustra Flex range and has a 30 times optical and 12 times digital zoom range with IR illumination up to 25 metres. An external variant has IR support to 150 metres. Review: A very well constructed PTZ camera unit with straightforward connection and configuration. Some minor issues encountered with setup functions and lens performance but overall, good image quality and extended zoom range.
Hanwha Techwin – Wisenet XNV-8081RE The XNV-8081RE is from the Wisenet X range and incorporates a PoE extender capability to simplify cabling infrastructure when installing a second camera within 80 metres of an existing position. The dome is based on a 1/2.8” 5MP CMOS sensor with a stated 0.07 Lux colour sensitivity and IR LED monochrome illumination. Review: A very installer friendly ONVIF compliant external dome camera with ease of set-up and an ability to simplify network cabling when retrofitting for additional cameras, installing two cameras to a single location or when needing to install an adjacent PoE device such as lighting or PIR detection.
Dahua – DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 The DH-SDT-5X225-2F-WA-0600 is promoted as a 2MP Starlight IR Dual PTZ external network camera. It is from the Dahua WizMind range and is based on 2 x 1/2.8” CMOS sensors, one with a wide angle view and one with a 25x optical zoom lens. “Deep Learning algorithms” are used to support detection functions such as smart tracking of vehicles or humans with automatic filtering of false alarms. . Review: An interesting ONVIF compliant dome with high sensitivity and capable of tracking subjects while still maintaining an overview of the scene of interest. Good differentiation of targets to track humans and/or vehicles while preventing false alarms.
Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DUPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this.

Luxury resort updates its fire detection technology Global Fire Equipment (GFE) designed, supplied and commissioned a new fire alarm system for the Radisson Blu Fujairah, a 5-star resort nestled along 500 metres of private beach in Dibba, Fujairah in the northeast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 257-room Radisson Blu Fujairah luxury resort has five outdoor swimming pools, a spa, a health club, meeting rooms, a diving centre, restaurants, bars and a kids’ club. When the engineering team at Radisson Blu was looking to replace the resort’s existing fire
New door entry system for social housing development A new large scale social housing complex, developed by Metroman has joined forces with Videx UK to install a door entry system for its residents. The London based development is split into 11 apartment blocks - Anika House and Jasleen Court - and fitted with Videx’s VX2200 door entry system along with Videx MiAccess access control and hands-free video monitors. Installer Dave Abrams, who owns DA & Son, recommended the entry system that met residents’ needs and also met specific regulations including Secured by Design (SBD), the police initiative for designing out crime. The VX2200 panel is also fitted with Videx’s standalone offline proximity system, MiAccess which enables the use of remote management of the access control system including adding and

alarm system because of mounting maintenance costs, GFE was appointed to design a system for the hotel’s main building and three further connected buildings, along with a health club, a diving centre, a bar and four villas. Once GFE, which trades under the name of Eurotech in the Middle East, had designed the new system, GFE’s agents in the UAE, Najd Electronics & Safety Equipment, undertook the installation, testing and commissioning as they already had the maintenance contract for Radisson Blu Fujairah and two other hotels in the Radisson Hotel Group. The chosen 9-loop system for Radisson Blu Fujairah comprises two panels. The first panel has four loops, each of which connects to 110 devices which cover the main four-storey hotel building and two other connected four-storey buildings. The second panel has five loops, each of which connects to over 100 devices which cover the third connected four-storey building, the external areas of the three-storey health club, the two-storey diving centre, a bar and the four three-storey villas. In total, the system comprises 780 smoke detectors, ten heat detectors, 40 manual call points (MCPs), 100 input output modules, 50 sounders, two network cards and ten amplifier modules. Eng. Yaser Ahmed Ouda El Deheny, Director of the engineering department at Radisson Blu Fujairah, comments: “When the maintenance costs associated with our previous fire alarm system kept increasing, we wanted to invest in a cost-effective and modern solution that would meet our requirements.” Kamal A. Hadi, Regional Director Middle East & North Africa (MENA) at GFE, adds: “This was an exciting project to work on and it’s the first time we’ve supplied our equipment to the Radisson Blu hotel group. Mabs Alam, Regional Sales Manager for London and South East at Videx UK, said: “Because of the integrated MiAccess, residents simply need a programmed fob to gain access to their home and if they lose or misplace a fob, it can be reprogrammed remotely with another one easily and quickly by a management team. “This means the system requires minimum maintenance and there’s no routine software upgrades needed either.”

Entertainment hub improves fire safety in India Combining a multiplex indoor and outdoor cinema, gaming facilities including a Go-Karting track, restaurants, a hotel and a shopping complex under one roof, the Firestone Entertainment Hub in Jamnagar, India, recently looked to improve its fire safety provision and brought in Cavitak Marketing to lead on the installation and specification of a new system. Parth Shah, Manager of Emerging Lead Technologies at Cavitak, said: “After meeting with the Hochiki Europe India Branch Office team and discussing the site’s unique requirements, they recommended the L@titude system.” There are many difficulties that come with specifying life safety systems in large applications, the most prominent being networking, as it is essential that all areas are sufficiently protected and connected. However, the Entertainment Hub encountered more challenges than most as the facility has multiple tenants within one space, all with different requirements and life safety concerns. Overseeing the project, Sujeet Singh, Senior Sales Manager at Hochiki, said: “Due to the sheer scale of this project, we met with the representatives from each tenant including the hotel, cinema and various restaurants, to better understand their life safety needs. From these conversations we were able to specify individual solutions to help protect each area of the hub. “For instance, the PVR Cinema required the use of beam smoke detection, whereas the Fern Hotel was better suited to point detection in each bedroom. The entire system was then connected, controlled and monitored through the L@titude system.”
Art studios upgrade detection systems after assessment Comelit’s fire alarm and detection systems, including beam detectors, have been installed by Ozzas Security Systems at Art Hub Studios CIC. Welcoming a high volume of members, clients and visitors to the studios, fire safety and security is an integral component of the building maintenance. Ozzas Security was called to the site following a risk assessment on the fire alarm and detection system. With recommendations made for a new system, Comelit’s Atena Easy single loop system was fitted with point detection and beam detectors to offer quick installation without impacting on site aesthetics. A representative of Art Hub Studios said: “With many people present at any one time, we need to ensure their safety and security, and we have regular checks and assessments planned. When issues were raised with our fire alarm and detection systems, we contacted Ozzas as our local fire specialist, who fitted the Atena system quickly and efficiently and it is end-user friendly, which is a welcome bonus.”

Applying a holistic approach, Hochiki was able to install various life safety systems, totalling over 700 devices throughout the entire space, all connected through the L@titude control and indication system. The modular nature of L@titude is especially suited for larger settings as it can network up to 32 panels with over 4,000 sub address point per panel. It’s also possible to customise each panel with addressable loop detection circuits, conventional detection circuits, relay cards, additional sounder outputs or programmable I/O modules as needed; a big advantage in the installation, allowing the individual circuits from each tenant to be connected and controlled through one overarching platform. If an incident should occur, having the power to add up to 64 individual users, all with different profiles and access permissions, widens the pool of people who can correctly analyse and react to a potential life safety event, ensuring a quick response.

Comelit’s Atena Easy single loop solution is a compact, entry level fully addressable system. The system can accommodate up to 500 devices over 2 loops, with a networked opportunity to expand with a facility or building requirement. Ozzas Security also installed eight beam detectors at the studios, equipped with an integral laser and set of passive reflectors to allow for simple auto-alignment. Rytis Ozolas of Ozzas Security added: “Any artist studio is a specialist consideration when it comes to fire safety, especially with the use of different materials and substances in every day works by the artists on site. The Art Hub Studios demonstrates good practice in having regular fire alarm system risk assessments and maintenance checks, calling on specialists to update equipment if issues are raised.”

“The older cameras that were being used in the tunnel had become obsolete,” he says. “This was due to camera part obsolescence fault levels increasing, and critical areas of tunnel coverage becoming more challenging to maintain with adequate CCTV coverage. Roadside cameras need to be tough and reliable, so we needed a ruggedised model that could withstand the rigours of constant use in that environment.” Cubic had used Predator Ultra HD cameras from 360 Vision Technology on an earlier tunnel project and this experience convinced Neil Ashford, and Cubic, that they’d be up to the task. One challenge the Limehouse Link Tunnel upgrade project faced was transmission: how best to ensure the 1080p HD images captured by the cameras could be sent to the TfL control centres. Fortunately, in addition to its direct IP connection options, the Predator cameras feature a 12-pin connection in the base of each unit, allowing the new replacement cameras to be connected directly to the existing cable infrastructure of the old camera system. “Being able to install the new Predator cameras without making any changes to the local camera infrastructure was a great advantage in reducing installation time and cost of the project,”,” Neil Ashford says. A total of 56 Predator Ultra 30:1 HD cameras are now in active use in the Limehouse Link Tunnel. The cameras are monitored at a variety of locations, including the primary Transport for London Network Management Control Centre (NMCC).
New traffic safety monitoring in the Limehouse Link Tunnel When Cubic Transportation Systems and Transport for London identified that the Limehouse Link Tunnel in London’s East End would benefit from an upgraded traffic safety monitoring system, they opted for Predator Ultra HD cameras from 360 Vision Technology. The Limehouse Link Tunnel opened for use in 1993 stretching for a little over a mile under London’s East End. Travelling along the A1203 from The Highway to Canary Wharf, it takes vehicles under the Limehouse Basin, Limekiln Dock and Dundee Wharf, then curves north-east under Westferry Road to emerge near the West India Quay DLR station. For a massively busy tunnel like the Limehouse Link, safety is paramount. Speed limits are set at 30mph, and Transport for London traffic management teams constantly monitor the live video feeds from cameras sited strategically along its course to ensure traffic flows smoothly and any incidents can be acted upon swiftly and safely. The camera system in the Limehouse Link Tunnel is maintained by Cubic Transportation Systems. Recently, it was decided that the existing cameras in the Limehouse Link Tunnel were in need of an upgrade. Cubic Senior Field Services Manager Neil Ashford explains. 56

It’s part of the ‘Vision Zero’ approach to traffic and transport strategy, with a long-term aim of eliminating all deaths and serious injuries from London’s streets. Operators look out not just for active incidents such as accidents and collisions, but for anything that has the potential to cause one, including loose manhole covers or potholes. When one of these situations is spotted, the Predator camera is zoomed in to confirm its cause and help to diagnose a swift solution, which could include closing the tunnel for rapid repairs. “TfL has received the new cameras very well,” Neil Ashford says. “Image quality allows the operations team to get the pictures that they need to assess and respond to incidents as they occur.”
