EDITORIAL

AI in the real world The buzzwords in our sector since 2021 have been AI and machine learning. The technology can hugely benefit security installations, but are there any red fl ags?

rtificial Intelligence (AI) improves security by detecting and mitigating threats in real-time. With its ability to analyse vast amounts of data, AI-powered security systems can identify patterns and anomalies that may indicate a potential security breach. AI can also automate responses to threats, enabling faster and more effective incident response. Overall, AI plays a critical role in enhancing security in today’s digital age. If that opening paragraph sounds more impressive than my usual prose, that’s because I used AI to write it. Not a single human was involved in the production of that text, which is why some walks of life (especially academia) will be more impacted by AI than others and why certain quarters are worried. There are some legitimate concerns about the use of AI among the wider public, perhaps because of Sci-Fi movies but also because it does not involve any people in the decision-making process. Some will say this makes systems more accurate, which is certainly true for surveillance and monitoring, while others say taking out human error also takes out human traits such as empathy as not all decisions in every job function are black and white. People are also, quite legitimately, worried about the lifespan of their careers although there’s not a plasterer on the planet who’s concerned about the threat of artificial intelligence on his profession. In security the benefits of AI are clear (as the AI kindly explained) and as long as the technology is used ethically there shouldn’t be any problems. Or could there be? This month we asked a panel of industry experts to give us their opinions on the rise of the learning machines and to voice any concerns they might have. It’s an interesting read and not a single robot was harmed in its production.

PSI is acquired by WBM It was announced in November that Western Business Media has purchased Professional Security Installer, Risk Xtra and Benchmark magazines from Pro-Activ Publications. The acquisition means that Western Business Media (WBM), already owners of Security Matters magazine and the Fire and Security Matters Awards, are now the UK’s largest publisher in the security sector. What does that mean for our readers? Initially you won’t notice any changes, however, given WBM’s track record of developing titles, you can expect to see PSI extend its reach and portfolio of services in the future. Exciting times!

INDUSTRY NEWS

Parallel Security announces contract wins and acquisition Parallel Security has landed a contract providing a range of security services and solutions to a National Grid scheme in Snowdonia that will see the removal of a section of overhead line and its replacement with electricity cables buried in a tunnel underground. The contract has led to the recruitment of an additional twelve staff. Another development for the business has been the addition of a sister company, GP Fire & Security, which it has acquired and relocated to Parallel’s head office site on Mold Business Park. The company was previously based in

Bosch to sell off its security businesses Bosch has announced it is realigning its Building Technologies division. In the future, the division is to focus on its regional integrator business, with solutions and services for building security, energy efficiency, and building automation. The company plans to sell most of the Building Technologies division’s product business. This includes the video, access and intrusion, and communication business units, and affects around 4,300 associates at more than 90 locations worldwide. Bosch is now looking for a buyer

Mold and continues to provide a range of fire, access control, intruder and CCTV systems. Francis Johnson, Parallel’s Managing Director, said: “The acquisition of GP Fire & Security as a sister business is a great fit, enabling us to provide customers with both physical security and electronic systems solutions.” Mel Pengelly, Commercial Director of Parallel Security and GP Fire & Security, said: “We have already doubled the size of GP Fire & Security since the acquisition earlier in 2023 through developing new customers and providing added value services to existing clients from both businesses. We expect to create up to another five jobs between now and the end of this year.” who will take on all three business units together with their associates and locations. The product business with fire-alarm systems, by contrast, is not to be sold. Because of its importance for systems integration, it is to be merged with the integrator business and continued. “We want to become one of the global leaders for systems integration in building technology and to seize the favourable opportunities for growth in this market. To achieve this, we need to consolidate. This is why we will in the future be focusing on systems integration as our core business,” said Christian Fischer, deputy chairman of the Bosch board of management. “We are confident we will be able to find a buyer who will take over all three business units, and who will further strengthen the business and give it a secure future.” He explained that, for strategic reasons, Bosch does not intend to develop this business further.

Hanwha Vision achieves ISO 27001 certification Hanwha Vision has achieved ISO 27001 (ISO/IEC 27001) certification, the international standard for information security, bolstering its internal security management systems (ISMS).

To achieve ISO 27001, a company must pass 93 controls across four categories: organisational, physical, technological, and people controls. Certification to the standard also requires continual improvement, with regular assessments to ensure compliance with the exacting standard. Hanwha Vision voluntarily pursued certification to further enhance security across its organisation and harden its cyber defences. As technology rapidly advances and cyber risks rise, the latest version of ISO 27001 reflects changing digital trends, such as cloud, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, to offer a standard that ensures information security in an increasingly digital world. Pread Um (Suk Bong), Director of Product and Marketing at Hanwha Vision said, “As technology continues to rapidly evolve, having robust security across our organisation is critical. We are proud to have achieved ISO 27001 certification, the international standard for information security, reaffirming our commitment to best practice across our business.”

Mayfl ex is awarded the EcoVadis Silver Medal Mayflex has been awarded the silver medal by EcoVadis, the assessment platform that rates businesses’ sustainability based on four key categories: environmental impact, labour, human rights standards, ethics, and procurement practices. Siobhan Bourke, Mayflex’s People and Sustainability Manager commented: “We are delighted to have achieved the silver medal from our previous bronze status. This acknowledges the extensive work that we have been doing and are continuing to do. We were so close to achieving the gold medal with just three points off the mark.”

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Here are a few recent launches that caught our eye.

Wireless cabinet lock adds extra security

Retrofit solution to make diesel vans run on electricity Security installers concerned about the cost and availability of buying a new electric van when there is still life in their existing vehicle now have an alternative: a retrofit solution using in-wheel motor (IWM) technology which fits to existing diesel vans to make them both electric and/or diesel at the touch of a button. Launched by BEDEO, the new RE-100 Range Extender, part of its Reborn Electric range, enables organisations to retain those vehicles for longer while still transitioning to an electric future. A vehicle fitted with a RE-100 Range Extender is electric first, with 117km of electric range, making it ideal for ‘Last Mile’ deliveries. Its existing diesel mode can be used when needed for longer trips, switching to electric when entering a low-emission zone and densely populated areas. bedeo.

Abloy UK has launched the Aperio KL100 – a battery powered wireless access solution for lockers, cabinets, cupboards and drawers. The Aperio KL100 allows almost any small opening to become an integral part of an access control system. It is available in two different lengths and several CAM options. The KL100 is a straightforward retrofit solution, and can be fitted to almost any wooden or metal locker, cabinet, or drawer. The wireless lock needs no specialist maintenance and is powered by one battery, which only uses power when a credential is presented, removing the hassle and inflexibility of physical keys. The lock can be operated with mobile keys via Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC, as well as smartcards and fobs. abloy.com/gb/

New wireless security system for SMBs and homes Dahua has launched a modular, wireless integrated security system aimed at small-to-medium businesses, as well as in homes. The EN50131 Grade 2 and PD6662: 2017 compliant AirShield wireless security system uses RF communication technology and cloud services to provide a user-friendly olution for end-users, installers and security companies. At the heart of AirShield is a hub which supports up to 150 devices, including PIR detectors, PIR cameras, dual-tech detectors with PIR and microwave technologies, keypads and key fobs, panic buttons, door and window detectors, water leak detectors, smoke detectors and sirens. The wireless indoor monitor with touchscreen can be used as an alarm keypad. AirShield features Airfly 3.0 – which delivers frequency hopping for optimum long-range two-way wireless connectivity and AES128 encryption, RF-HD for faster image transmission and higher image resolution, and Dahua’s Cloud services for more convenient and efficient alarm monitoring and system health. Being fully wireless AirShield, says Dahua, is quick and easy to install, and avoids damage to décor and the fabric of a building caused by cabling. It also makes it quick and simple to add or move devices. dahuasecurity.com/uk

Ajax – KeyPad TouchScreen Getting started As for most current products, the manuals along with additional quick-start guides, are downloaded from the Ajax website. A QR code is provided on the included documentation to access the support site. The keypad was tested on a system using a “Hub 2 Plus” setup. This hub features a pair of SIM sockets for backup communication channels and supports communication with Central Monitoring Stations using a range of protocols or can be managed using the Ajax Pro application. Once this Hub is installed and configured using the Ajax app (available on iOS or Android sites) the keypad is simply an additional device to add. A momentary power switch on the rear of the keypad activates the unit as batteries are preinstalled. The QR code or 11-character device ID is then entered into the app to add the keypad as a new device.

The keypad housing’s backing plate is used to wall-mount the keypad. Four fixing holes are provided with screws and basic wallfixings supplied. One of these fixing points has break-off lugs to activate the tamper switch should the unit be prised from the wall. A break-out section is contained in the mounting plate for cable access. The keypad houses six ‘AA’ batteries and these are given an estimated operational life of 1.5 years if used on battery power only; this is based on default settings and up to four interaction per day so for heavier usage, an external power supply may be advisable. A DC supply of 12v with at least 500mA is advised (range 10.5 to 14v). Access to the batteries is by removal of the back cover that is held in place by four small crosshead screws. The unit has dimensions of 172 x 82 x 26mm and a weight of 327 grammes. It has an operating temperature range from -10°C to +40°C with up to 75% humidity. It is available in Black or White finish. The device uses two forms of secure wireless protocols, ‘Jeweller’ is used for all alarm and event communications while ‘Wings’ is used for firmware updates, groups, rooms, and other settings. An internal sounder can be configured to provide local alerts to event activity such as entry and exit delay times.

Performance The 480 x 854 pixel 5” display with capacitive touchscreen is woken by proximity or pressing any part of the display area. It shows the location being covered and its armed state in the centre of the screen with Arm, Disarm, and Night Mode buttons below. Then below these are the Panic, Control, Scenario, and Log In options depending on system configuration. Beneath the main display area is an Ajax logo that has Alarm status LEDs to momentarily illuminate it. At the bottom of the unit two wave icons indicate the RF section for contactless card, key-fob, and Bluetooth communication along with the proximity detection sensor. It is compatible with DESFire EV1 / EV2 and ISO14443-A (13.56 MHz) contactless cards. A variable lockout time can be set in case of incorrect code entry or unverified devices used for more than three times. Any communication loss will be identified and trigger an alarm condition after a default 36 seconds, dependent

on Jeweller signalling settings. These can be from 3 to 300 seconds and alerts can be raised if 8 pings are missed (range from 3 to 60). The keypad can be set to arm with or without authorisation and disarmed using code entry or mobile phone or card / fob use. The screen backlight can be selected as Dark or Light mode and can be set to be a permanently active display if an external power source is used. Screen brightness in controlled by a light sensor at the top of the screen. In addition to the main keypad code, up to 200 personal access codes can be entered along with up to 200 duress codes. A further 99 unregistered codes can also be allocated for users not enrolled on the system. Group management settings for alarming collections of detectors or rooms is supported on the display and can be allocated to selected key-fobs and users. Between 9 and 25 groups allowed, depending on the hub model. A level of Automation is supported by scenario management with up to 6 buttons for individual or groups of devices.

Conclusion A very simple to install and manage enhanced addition to the Ajax range. Gives increased user flexibility and control.

INTERVIEW

The perfect partnership The remote monitoring of video and alarms is the final piece of the professional security jigsaw. The relationship between the installer and the alarm receiving centre (ARC) is key to the success of the project, so how can you work more efficiently with your chosen monitoring partner?

A Carl Meason

“I actually had the conversation with installers about a digital infrastructure around 15 years ago and got shot down for it so maybe I was ahead of my time!” 18

EDIT - Interview.indd 2

security contract is only as good as the sum of all of its parts, and the ARC is a vital component of the application that includes the installer and the end user. Readers of PSI will already be working with a company that provides alarm monitoring to improve the protection of their customers, but there are issues that are on the horizon that need to be addressed such as the IP switchover and the rapid growth of AI. To find out more about the current state-ofplay with monitoring and how installers should involve the ARC more when it comes to system design and support, we spoke to Carl Meason, Managing Director at Fenix Monitoring, an ARC that has used technology to reduce false activations by 77% in a year: How has 2023 been for you? The year has flashed by! Overall, it’s been very similar to the previous three years from lockdown, business hasn’t stopped. During the pandemic, organisations were leaving buildings empty so there was a big requirement for protecting vacant properties. Through that period people started to understand the value that electronic security could bring them especially when remote security and technology is used to complement existing physical security measures.

As a result, I’d say that 2023 has been fantastic for the ARC industry and for installers as well because we have seen a whole new revenue stream come through due to our technology enhancing the existing manned guarding services on site. A lot of Financial Directors have caught onto the fact that getting value from security officers isn’t about cutting hours, it’s about complementing them with electronic kit and monitoring services. Over the year we’ve seen lots of growth and plenty of new installers starting up as well. How has the IP switchover been going? We’re in a good position with the move to digital because Fenix has been running for five years so we don’t have masses of legacy equipment that some ARCs do. Of course, as we’ve taken on new installers, we’ve also brought some legacy technology onboard and where we have incentivised customers to replace it, it has work quite well because we are able to have that conversation upfront. I think the message is getting out there, but I do fear there has been apathy about the need to act before the 2025 deadline, although this seems to be dissipating and people are taking action. I actually had the conversation with installers about a digital

infrastructure around 15 years ago and got shot down for it so maybe I was ahead of my time! I suppose some installers might be tempted to wait until the last system service, but it could create a really challenging conversation with the end user to tell them that they needed to replace the equipment you’ve been servicing all this time as it was going to be defunct. We try to give as much information we can to the installer so that they can speak to the end user and I give credit to CSL and BT who have been banging the drum for a long time and some ARCs are beginning to join in with getting the message across. As I said, we are really lucky because we don’t have a lot of legacy equipment, but I’ve got some peers in the business who have thousands and thousands of PSTN connections who may be a little worried that people may start asking about whether or not they need monitoring anyway. This is the ever-present problem with security, in that you don’t need it, until you need it. Do you think there will be plenty of people leaving it until the last minute and maybe not bother with monitoring? To be honest, I think installers have a challenge on their hands and it’s a case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” with this. It’s not until you bring the subject up that customers might start asking what they get for their money. I guess it’s only natural for an end user to assume that as they’ve not had a break-in for the past 15 years they don’t need to spend on the upgrade. This is a problem for installers, and I’ve spoken to CSL and BT about how we can make it cost neutral for the end user so that it’s a no-brainer. When costs start to go up, especially nowadays when people are counting the pennies a little bit

more, and you’ve got to tell them there will be an extra charge and they’ve got to sign a new threeyear deal to equalise the cost, people start to take notice! Another industry buzzword is AI. Do you have any concerns about it being used in security? I don’t know if it’s just me being paranoid, but I am concerned that in terms of the ARC and combatting nuisance alarms with CCTV, there is a possibility that AI could be compensating for poor installation work. I’m not saying that this is actually happening, just that it is a potential issue to keep in mind. I wouldn’t blame the installer or the ARC for this, it’s just that things are different today. We used to interact more with the installer about their applications and help to fine-tune them, but that doesn’t happen so much anymore as there are different priorities. AI itself is fantastic in terms of what it can do, but because it is lowering the number of activations there is less interaction between the ARC, the installer and the end user and those missing conversations can be beneficial in terms of seeing the value in the service. So, there are two sides of the coin: in terms of productivity AI is fantastic, but we lose the human interaction as a result.

“The ARC is only one part of the whole security application, and the service works best when you have an installer that works with the ARC and the end user to create the perfect environment”

Along the same lines if an installer is already working with an ARC how can that partnership be made more beneficial? I wrote something a little a little while ago about the need for something called the “monitoring triangle”. The ARC is only one part of the whole security application, and the service works best when you have an installer that works with

the ARC and the end user to create the perfect environment. If one of those elements doesn’t work or interact with the others, then you are in trouble, because what happens is that everything is okay until something goes wrong. Then the blame game begins! The ARC is the end point of the piece so before we get involved there needs to have been housekeeping of the design and risk analysis. In the past there has been a tendency for ARCs to encourage any business just to get the contract and you have transient customers who are never happy with the service they get and just move around. Don’t get me wrong, we win and lose customers, but if you are upfront about exactly what you’re all trying to achieve at the time of sale, then no-one should lose business and there won’t be the finger-pointing exercise because every party is involved. We talk about the risks upfront and we’re clear, it’s not just about adding the connection it is about the risks of the business, the equipment, the system design and the goals, what everyone is trying to achieve. Are you trying to stop crime or are you trying to catch criminals? That’s a big question to ask because often we’re trying to stop people from doing things before they do it - and that’s hard to prove. In that scenario, if nothing’s happened, then you must be doing a good job. So, what are the tips for working with an ARC? Talk to your ARC at the earliest possible opportunity because sometimes we are a bit of an afterthought, but the ARC is in a unique position to be able to give feedback to design a system to make it safer with general security

principles. If an installer is trying to stop things from happening, for example, where is the best place to capture it? Sometimes there’s a tendency to try and capture as much information as possible which can be tricky for the ARC as CCTV and intruder systems cover different size areas. You must try to give the ARC the best opportunity to succeed. In vast spaces it can be difficult to get results even with AI. There’s that to consider but also, if a system is designed in the right way with the ARC in mind, you should be reducing the number of activations for a CCTV application. Get the ARC involved as soon as possible, especially if the job is something out of the ordinary because we will have a unique perspective that maybe nobody else has because we’re the endpoint of the installation. If you could change one thing about the security industry what would it be? I think a lot of people don’t get involved enough in the security industry and by that, I mean working with the associations and trade bodies. There are people that see the industry just as a way to make money and a lot of people complain about what’s happening in the sector, but they don’t get involved. I think a lot more people should get on board with the likes of the BSIA and go along to events to talk to other people who are experiencing the same issues. Sometimes as an industry we can be very insular and hide information while other sectors such as cyber or banking share information. We all have the same problems, but we don’t discuss the issues and use other people’s experience to bolster our own positions. We need to be more collaborative.

Ajax event reveals new tech Ajax Systems hosted its fifth Ajax Special Event recently, an online showcase of its latest devices and software features. Here we take a look at some of the news and technology revealed including a range of CCTV products and enhancements to its intrusion and fire portfolio

A

t the previous Ajax Special Event: Comfort Zone in 2022, the emphasis was on the company’s commitment to elevating the technological prowess of the country on a global stage. One of the milestones in this journey has been the development of the Air Alert app. In 18 months since its launch, it has become Ajax’s largest software product, with nearly 22 million downloads. Serving over 6 million active users, it highlights both the technological achievement and the ongoing invasion in one of Europe’s largest nations. Continuing this tradition, the fifth Ajax Special Event solidified Ukraine’s role in shaping the future of security. With more offerings, Ajax Systems saw an opportunity for new product categorisation. This year, Valentine Hrytsenko, Ajax System’s chief marketing officer, introduced a renewed product portfolio, divided into two large groups. Before the Special Event, the company unveiled its first batch of wired devices,

the Fibra line, protecting devices between itself and the hub. When a sabotage attempt is made, LineProtect takes the brunt of the attack, informs the hub about sabotage and the protected devices continue to operate. LineSplit Fibra: A module designed to divide a single Fibra line into four. LineSplit provides an additional 2,000 m of wired connectivity for each output line. This makes renovating or installing a security system easier and more flexible, regardless of topology. The splitting does not affect the system’s reliability or the speed of its response to alarms. LineSupply Fibra: A module designed to power devices on the Fibra line. The device output line can be up to 2,000 meters. With LineSupply, the total length of the output lines can extend to tens of kilometres. The modules are installed in the required number, one after the other. The company offers two product versions: a 45-Watt module with one output line and a 75-Watt module with two output lines. Transmitter Fibra: a module to integrate one third-party device into the Ajax system. It supports all connection types from NC/NO to 3EOL. Transmitter offers ten event types for the connected device, can be configured remotely, and regularly sends its status reports to the hub. Additionally, the device measures the end-of-line resistance values and automatically saves them in the settings. MultiRelay Fibra: A four-channel relay module with potential-free contacts to control power supply remotely. Each of the four relays operates independently and offers both impulse

and bistable operation modes. They can be connected to almost any system or devices, running various automation scenarios. Case: A casing designed to house LineProtect, LineSplit, LineSupply, and MultiRelay. It comes in four sizes – A (106), B (175), C (260), and D (430). Cases can hold between one and eight modules. The design ensures simple cable routing and organization, as well as easy installation and maintenance.

KeyPad TouchScreen Tested in this month’s edition of PSI, KeyPad TouchScreen is a wireless keypad with touch screen that offers a graphical interface where all important information is immediately visible. The device boasts intuitive group management integrating the familiar UI from the app. This device enables users to monitor and change the status of each security group with a single touch. Up to six buttons for running the scenarios can be opened with one tap so that the user can add any automated function to the screen. KeyPad TouchScreen features DESFire technology, a contactless solution to identify the user by card or key fob. Moreover, the device supports BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) lowenergy radio protocol that makes it possible to use a smartphone app instead of cards or key fobs. Also, it is possible to add different code types: keypad code (one per keypad), personal code (individual for each user), code for an unregistered person.

EN 50131 (Grade 3) certification It was announced that Fibra devices are now officially certified as EN 50131 (Grade 3). The certification is pivotal for high-risk establishments, including banks, gun shops, government agencies, museums, large warehouses, and offices housing valuable equipment and information. With this accomplishment, Ajax Systems not only marks a significant milestone but also enhances its capability to integrate third-party devices into the Ajax system, thanks to the Transmitter and MultiTransmitter modules. Ajax Systems also introduced new detectors that incorporate the best practices from both the company and the security industry: MotionProtect G3 Fibra and DoorProtect G3 Fibra. In addition to all the sensors found in DoorProtect Plus Fibra, DoorProtect G3 Fibra includes a magnetometer to monitor the surrounding magnetic field. It also comes with plastic spacers to mitigate the effects of metal surfaces on the magnet.

Cameras TurretCam, BulletCam, and DomeCam Mini embody the signature Ajax design shapes. Each camera model has four possible configurations: a lens with a viewing angle of 85 or 110 degrees and 3K or 4K resolution. Every Ajax camera easily adapts to changing light with True WDR technology. This smart tech, involving hardware and software, fixes uneven lighting in complex scenes, frame by frame, in real-time. Also, the IP65 rated cameras are equipped with a digital microphone. It uses a custom noise cancellation system. Cameras utilise the Ajax Cloud to transmit system events. The proprietary JetSparrow technology ensures fast peer-to-peer transmission of video data. With AI analysis capabilities, these cameras can detect and recognise various object types, such as humans, vehicles, and pets. As a result, the surveillance system is able to record only relevant events, conserving storage space. With app system notifications, users can easily navigate to the specific camera and view the incident.

Ajax SIM The company has released a new service that features a roaming SIM card pre-installed in the hub. This card is programmed to operate with that specific hub, ensuring an instant connection without any further setup or configuration by the installer. Ajax SIM has full network connectivity and is compatible with 2G/3G/LTE. There’s no need to test multiple operators during installation; the SIM automatically selects the strongest and least congested signal available. It’s an IoT card, so there’s no need to activate it with a phone. Just install the hub and activate the SIM card in the PRO apps. The company decided to ship Ajax SIM in every Ajax hub that goes to the US and Canada distributors. The service will soon be launched in the UK, Nordic countries, and Australia.

FireProtect 2 With the introduction of FireProtect 2 AC fire detectors equipped with a mains power supply, Ajax is catering to regions such as England, Wales, Australia, the US, and others, where all fire detectors, in most cases, should be connected to the mains. Complementing its primary power source, the detectors come with a sealed backup battery, ensuring uninterrupted operation. Thought-out design, improved mounting panel with WAGO 221 connectors, and in-app settings simplify the installation process.

ManualCallPoint Ajax also debuted ManualCallPoint Jeweller at the event, a wireless wall-mounted button for manual fire alarm activation. It is available in two versions: ManualCallPoint (Red) for residential facilities and ManualCallPoint (Blue) for educational institutions. With the Red button, an alarm is delivered to a CMS mandatorily. With the Blue button, a user can deactivate an alarm in the Ajax app.

Yale integration Finally, Ajax Systems announced an integration with Yale. Users will be able to manage and automate a Yale smart lock directly from the Ajax app. This functionality will be made possible due to an instant Cloud-to-Cloud connection through the Yale Home API, which will ensure smooth and secure communication with every Ajax system. 25

PANEL

AI – risks and rewards The PSI Panel returns this month with a look at the rapid adoption of AI technology in the security sector. Do you have any concerns about the use of AI in systems designed to protect people and property?

I

n just three years, the global AI industry has more than doubled, reaching a $240bn value and a quarter of a billion users worldwide. From healthcare and retail to manufacturing, stock trading, and social media, companies continue adopting AI solutions to improve their efficiency, decision-making, and user experience and gain a competitive edge. At the same time, a surge in investments in AI technologies and startups by both private and public sectors shows the interest in the industry remains strong. According to data from AltIndex.com the global AI market is set to continue growing by a CAGR of 17% in the next four years and hit more than $500bn in value by 2027. But as the technology is adopted across the security sector, specifically for improving surveillance analytics and monitoring benefits, should we have any concerns about the rapidity of its growth? We asked experts from across the industry for their thoughts on the rise of the learning machines:

Dave Tate – Ajax Systems Embracing AI in the security sector is a crucial aspect of contemporary technological advancements, and it is important to stay updated with the latest innovations in this realm. For instance, our cameras leverage AI-powered object recognition for efficient event recording and reduced storage usage. This helps the surveillance system record only important events, like someone coming into a room or a car going through a parking lot. One of the key reasons why security installers should offer AI solutions to their clients lies in the increased level of automation and threat response. Artificial intelligence can analyse large volumes of data in real-time, identify anomalies, reduce false alarms, and

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT - Panel.indd 2

predict potential threats, ensuring a more prompt and efficient response to potential dangers. The use of AI in the security industry will continue to evolve, providing many benefits including speed and operational efficiencies. It is also important to recognise and understand the potential negative impact of AI technology to ensure an ethical, relevant, transparent, nondiscriminatory and responsible implementation.

Mark Wall – Wall2Wall Group The integration of AI in the security sector presents a mix of concerns and excitement, reflecting the fast-evolving nature of our industry and the technology we use on a day-to-day basis. AI, especially when considered with IoT and interconnected systems, has the transformative potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and overall effectiveness. It enables advanced analytics, real-time data processing, and the ability to identify patterns and anomalies. It can facilitate a more proactive and responsive approach to security threats, leading to improved safety, risk mitigation and a stronger security position. The added advantage is AI systems can learn from experiences, continuously improving performances. This adaptability means security measures remain effective in the face of changing threat landscapes, providing customers with a future-proof solution. Whilst some may see this as a threat, this ability can counter the increasingly sophisticated methods of crime. The ability to stay at least one step ahead is crucial to enhancing the capacity to detect and prevent. At the same time support capture with responsible authoritative use to avoid repeat occurrences. The legitimate concern is about the potential misuse or unintended consequences of AI in security. We identify that with AI technology comes great responsibility and as an industry, we have a duty of care to manage the process and identify issues related to privacy, ethical considerations, and the potential for bias in AI algorithms.

“To benefit from AI, the industry must champion responsible use and robust video data storage”

We must engage in ongoing dialogues about the ethical use of AI technology in security, emphasising privacy, preventing misuse, and seeking ways to champion responsible use. With this, from an installer’s perspective, comes a commitment to partnerships, training and learning, optimising the opportunities with AI. This is right across the sector, from apprentices who are just starting out to industry experts looking to embrace the new technology. We must all seek the right resources to facilitate the adoption process and integrate the technology into everyday systems. This combined together may form part of how AI is embraced by the security sector as a catalyst for progress. Installers can see how quickly its advantages can be leveraged not only by our industry but also by the customers we serve.

knowledge. These systems make AI intuitive to use too, so operators can start benefitting as soon as the VMS is installed. The benefits extend beyond security, to improve operations, long-term strategy, maintenance, health and safety, and more. To benefit from AI, the industry must champion responsible use and robust video data storage. Milestone is proud to be one of the first signatories of The Copenhagen Letter, an industry call for transparency, humanity-centred design, and public scrutiny into the use of technology. Installers play a key role, in working only with manufacturers who design and use video responsibly, in educating customers about AI governance and data protection, and in installing robust, cyber-secure systems.

Neil Killick – Milestone Systems

We see an opportunity to use AI tools to supplement customers’ work to ensure that their loss and security professionals focus their expertise on the items that really matter, and do not get frustrated by false alarms and warnings. With analysis of different data streams, such as point of sale (POS) and select neighbourhood crime indexes, applied AI can help an expert ‘put the pieces together’ that drive attention to the right thing, at the right location, at the right time. From a hardware standpoint, cameras with edge detection also help drive better decisions within operations, giving accurate measures for wait times, foot falls, and license plate tracking. With macroeconomic trends driven by demographics pointing towards a smaller labour force in the future, AI driven efficiencies are core to the business value that we aim to deliver.

AI holds many benefits for the security sector because it delivers great intelligence and insight into the mountain of data that video security systems create. It’s humanly impossible to keep on top of everything happening in real time on a site, multiple video streams, sensor data, and more. AI cuts through the noise to make operators more situationally aware and effective - it augments the role of the human, instead of replacing it. With AI in many cameras and video management software (VMS) it’s now possible to bring AI to a system with little or no AI coding

Callan Hale – 3xLogic

Jamie Allam – Amthal There are many reasons to be excited about the potential benefits AI can bring to security. As responsible installers, we also recognise legitimate concerns to be addressed over time. One of the most notable advantages of AI is its ability to enhance threat detection and response capabilities, inclusive of suspicious behaviour, unauthorised access, or unusual patterns. By analysing this in real-time, it

Pread Um (Suk Bong) – Hanwha Vision While debates rage about how artificial intelligence will benefit industry at large, as well as how to ensure its responsible use, it’s clear that AI is already transforming electronic security. Users have realised that the combination of video technology and AI can vastly improve incident response rates, reduce false alarms, and lower operator fatigue. Further, they are deploying AI in video applications beyond ‘traditional’ security that help streamline business operations and deliver new insights for better decision-making. This ‘added value’ is behind the security sector’s embrace of AI over the last few years and serves as the foundation for Hanwha Vision’s advocacy for the adoption of AI ‘at the edge’ (in the camera or device), where it is effective and has the most impact. Indeed, by incorporating an AI-enabled camera from Hanwha Vision into a video network, advanced features such as accurate detection and classification of objects (including people, vehicles, as well as their attributes) are immediately available. In turn, this explains why business leaders are so excited by AI-enabled video: recent research by Hanwha Vision found that nearly one in three (31%) European business leaders intend to deploy AI-enabled video to address business challenges. For context, this is almost double the number that intends to adopt automation and robotics (17%) and on a par with the Internet of Things (IoT) at 32%. When it comes to incorporating AI into their video installations, installers are pushing against an open door. Not only does AI improve image quality and reduce false alarms, it also delivers the operational insights that users demand. These new and innovative uses of video, broadly described as ‘business intelligence’, provide great commercial opportunities for installers and integrators that embrace AI. While the technology is cost-effective, simple to install and easy to use, the industry still must work to build more trust in AI. Installers can build their customers’ trust in AI by implementing responsible practices and partnering with NDAA-compliant can ensure faster response times, quicker intervention and continued risk assessment. AI can reduce false alarms, which can lead to complacency and wasted resources in traditional security systems. With its ability to distinguish between real threats and false positives, AI can significantly enhance the accuracy of security systems. This not only increases overall security but also reduces the workload for responsible personnel, enabling them to focus on genuine threats rather than constantly reacting to false alarms. The element of predictive analysis is another opportunity with AI, with the potential to analyse historical data and identify trends and vulnerabilities. This proactive approach - with the increased use of IoT and interconnected systems - allows security teams to take preventive measures, strengthening and evolving security measures as required to mitigate threat levels. The benefits can be seen in operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness and scalability to adapt to changing needs and requirements. From a data perspective, AI can analyse vast amounts of data to provide valuable insights and trends, helping customers make informed decisions about security. Concerns regarding privacy and misuse of AI in the security sector must be acknowledged. AIpowered surveillance systems can be invasive,

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT - Panel.indd 4

raising questions about individual privacy and civil liberties. Striking the right balance between security and privacy is crucial, and regulations and ethical guidelines must be implemented to ensure responsible AI deployment in the security sector. There is the risk of bias and discrimination in AI systems, particularly in areas such as facial recognition. We must be seen to approach this carefully to support the Police who are being urged to use retrospective facial recognition technology to track down known offenders by May 2024. If not carefully designed and monitored, these systems can reinforce existing biases and inadvertently target specific groups. In conclusion, the use of AI in the security sector presents both exciting opportunities and legitimate concerns. Installers should encourage their customers to embrace AI in security, but it must be done responsibly and with careful consideration of privacy, bias, and ethical implications. By leveraging AI’s capabilities, businesses and individuals can enhance their security. As an industry, we have a duty of care to work with our customers to present AI as a way to increase effectiveness in many different technologies and scenarios providing there are safeguards in place to support total protection within any environment.

Jamie Barnfield – IDIS As a result of easier, more affordable AI video options, we are seeing systems integrators winning some significant contracts. In recent months we’ve supplied projects where the analytics were not just an add-on or an afterthought but were central to winning the deal. So, systems integrators have much to gain by keeping up with how AI video is being used and how it can become a selling point. Automated queue monitoring and people counting is being increasingly used by businesses that want to cope more efficiently with variable volumes of service users – in other words, managing queues and customer demand better. Most obviously this includes retail, hospitality, and event management, but also settings as diverse as health services and transportation. There are two main applications: real-time alerts can be triggered that allow staff to be redeployed immediately to manage increased customer volumes; and reporting tools allow activity patterns to be measured and analyzed retrospectively, to support more informed decision making over resourcing. In retail applications, people counting and occupancy monitoring data from video analytics is being integrated with wider ERP systems. For chains with multiple branches to manage, this is transforming the ability to understand the sales performance of each store, measured against peaks and troughs of customer flow. In applications where security is business critical, including where there are compliance requirements, analytics such as line cross are being deployed to support real-time monitoring operations. One recent project that we supplied involves multiple remote communications facilities monitored from a 24/7 security control room – the operators are supported by automated detection.

“There are many reasons to be excited about AI especially for professional installers who have had the training on setting up the features”

30

EDIT - Panel.indd 5

Sam Cherri – Serage There are many reasons to be excited about AI especially for professional installers who have had the training on setting up the features. Promoting these abilities to their customers will give them a competitive edge in the market and it will add value to both the installer and the end user who can benefit from certain AI features most notably from those cameras that include AI capabilities in the product for no extra cost. It makes sense to promote AI when applicable to win business and increase margins.

Ric Martin – Pinnacle Systems We may be a newcomer to the industry in our solution, but based on our combined 60-plus years of industry experience, we view the use of AI in the security sector as an exciting and transformative development. The potential benefits and advancements it brings to security systems make it a valuable tool for both installers and their customers. You only need to look at how far it’s come even in the last six months! But it’s not without cause for concern and we have to take a combined responsible approach to its delivery. AI in the security sector holds immense promise in enhancing threat detection, response times, safety and overall system efficiency. The ability of AI algorithms to analyse vast amounts of data in real-time enables quicker and more accurate identification of anomalies or potential security risks. We are already seeing how this heightened level of intelligence allows security systems to adapt dynamically to changing circumstances, providing a proactive approach to security rather than a reactive one. The advantages of enhanced threat detection, reducing the likelihood of false alarms and adapting to evolving issues, means systems can learn and adapt, ensuring security measures remain effective against the latest crime trends and potential losses.

It means installers who are willing to embrace AI in this early adoption phase will be at the forefront of technological innovation. Positioning them as forward-thinkers to deliver heightened security and instant peace of mind to their customers. The potential to optimise resource allocation also translates into cost savings and operational efficiency, with security reports enabled for Building, Security, Loss Prevention Officers and Facility Managers to be received at any time, from anywhere leading to a swift response as appropriate. This all has the capability to deliver elevated security systems, undoubtedly making them more efficient, intelligent and responsive. But as an industry, we must ensure a responsible use of AI technology. Understanding the nature of AI, whilst we see the benefits, falling into the wrong hands can equally have a devastating impact. It is our belief that there will need to be some governance on its use to ensure responsible and ethical deployment, safeguarding against misuse and upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and privacy. This governance framework should involve collaboration between industry leaders, policymakers, and ethical experts to strike a balance between harnessing the potential of AI for positive security advancements and mitigating potential risks associated with its unintended consequences.

Alistair Enser – Reliance High-Tech A recent TV show revealed that the first biometric information was captured by a French police officer in 1893 and involved measuring suspects’ physical attributes such as the distance between the eyes, as these tend not to change, even if disguised. Fascinatingly, the same principles underpin modern facial recognition technology. Skip forward 130 years, and machine learning now draws on large data sets to identify patterns and make predictions. As these data sets get larger, so the accuracy of the predictions these computers make become more reliable. The role of machine learning in biometric technologies such as facial recognition therefore makes identification of individuals so much faster and far more accurate.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT - Panel.indd 6

How accurate? Well, the same TV show revealed that humans asked to identify similar faces typically get 16% wrong, and this is even true of border guards. Yet the latest facial recognition technology in use at borders gets only one in a million incorrect. It makes a mistake in only 0.0001% of instances. Everybody has budget restraints, and few in the private or public sectors have spare resources. So users are increasingly trying to spot patterns of behaviour, identify and mitigate potential risk with less resources available to them. AI in the form of facial recognition, for example, is a business tool that offers such undeniable benefits that to not use it would be ridiculous. Yes, of course, bias in data sets must be addressed, but this issue has been much improved over the last few years. And no, AI should never act as judge and jury, but studies show that AI can be most effective when combined with human intelligence. To return to the original question, AI should not be used blindly and must be deployed with ethical use in mind. It needs to be used where appropriate and where it adds value, not for its own sake. But in the right use case, AI can be game changing, and it presents a huge opportunity for installers. At Reliance HighTech, we are very excited about its potential and have invested in the skills and accreditations essential to be trusted with the technology.

he acquisition marked a significant milestone in TIS’ growth strategy and enables it to continue delivering its promise of bringing new, smarter, impactful technology solutions to customers that help to improve safety, reduce costs and streamline operations. The combined expertise of TIS and NSP will bring to the market a technology-agnostic, fully integrated, automated fire detection, alert and smoke control system for customers. The acquisition has been supported by Key Capital Partners (KCP) who themselves acquired a significant minority share in TIS in 2021.

NSP will become an important part of the TIS group and together, both businesses will complement and enhance each other, resulting in accelerated synergised growth. The 20-strong NSP team will continue to operate from its Kidderminster headquarters, expanding TIS’ West Midlands presence. TIS’ offices in Mansfield, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leeds and Uxbridge expands NSP’s reach to a national level. James Twigg, CEO at TIS, commented: “This acquisition is a decisive step forward for TIS, leveraging our recent growth capital to realise our broader vision of bringing processes and innovations that improve the way the world

is protected as it lives and works. The deal strengthens our core capabilities and provides opportunities to enter other high-growth sectors such as residential developments. “The NSP management team brings significant industry knowledge and commercial expertise to TIS. We are excited to welcome NSP into the TIS family.” Lee Hewings, Managing Director at NSP, said: “NSP’s journey to this point has been about forging valuable collaborations and I am excited about the immediate opportunities our partnership with TIS will bring, enabling us to offer our innovative smoke control services, expertise and knowledge to a much larger audience.” To find out more about the acquisition and the company’s plans for further growth, PSI spoke to James Twigg: Were you actively looking for a business to acquire? Had you planned to grow through acquisition? Our strategic growth plan has primarily been rooted in organic development, nurturing our core competencies, fostering innovation, and steadily building our market presence in highgrowth sectors such as Integrated Retirement Communities. This has served as the backbone of our growth strategy. However, we have always maintained a flexible stance towards new and interesting opportunities. NSP was a prospect that was immediately compelling and aligned seamlessly with our long-term objectives and values. We felt NSP could add substantial value to our overall business model. What was attractive about NSP? The acquisition was not just about growth in size; it was about enriching our capabilities, culture, and future prospects. A significant aspect was the complementary nature of our products and services, coupled with a shared approach to delivering high-quality, premium service to customers. We feel there is a huge opportunity to leverage the strengths of each business and offer unified, fully-compliant fire detection, alert and smoke control systems - something the market is currently missing. Secondly, the strong cultural fit between our companies cannot be overstated. Our shared values, service philosophy and business practices meant the combined workforces could immediately operate cohesively and effectively. Moreover, the strength of the NSP management team was a decisive factor, sharing our passion for driving the business forward as innovative industry leaders. Geographically, the fit was also ideal, offering crucial logistical efficiencies and expanding our market presence and reach into new regions and with new customers.

EDIT - News Extra p32,33.indd 3

How do you envisage fitting NSP into the TIS offering? Will you be selling Vent-Guard for example, or will it be just offering a wider portfolio of services? We’ve been advocating for a converged approach to life safety, security and communications for the past decade and have been at the forefront of this technological revolution. With this approach now becoming the go-to option for all smart, forward-thinking customers, most are now asking for a ‘Single Supplier Solution’ that reduces development and operational costs, and simplifies installation, management and ongoing service and maintenance. This means NSP’s offering perfectly complements TIS’ and vice versa. NSP already has a fantastic market reputation so we will continue to sell Vent-Guard to its existing customer base, and TIS’ where applicable. We will also be adding fire detection and alert capabilities to create technology-agnostic, fully integrated, automated fire detection, alert and smoke control systems for customers. We believe this will be a true market differentiator. We will also add Vent-Guard to our existing life safety, security and communications solutions which will really benefit from the inclusion of AOV technologies. We see several verticals benefitting from this such as the Integrated Retirement Community and Higher Education sectors. Our converged approach to technology also means there are significant opportunities to add these capabilities into relevant building management systems.

“NSP already has a fantastic market reputation so we will continue to sell VentGuard to its existing customer base, and TIS’ where applicable”

Will NSP customers notice any changes? In the short term NSP customers will continue to receive the same service and support from the NSP team, which remains in place. Combined with TIS knowledge, expertise, products and services, NSP customers will see an expanded range of services that bridge an important gap in fire safety and smoke control, continuing to deliver the highest levels of compliance, meeting all relevant EN standards and CE certifications. Customers will also benefit from collaboration with a larger organisation and the additional resources and talent that brings.

Security life with Georgina Newland of Nova Security Systems

Name: Georgina Newland Job title: Managing Director Time in security/fire: 20 years Company: Nova Security Systems Location: Folkestone, Kent Areas of expertise: CCTV, intruder alarms, access control, panic room, gate, barrier and bollard automation, Wi-Fi Certifications: NSI Silver, Came Safe, Axis Certified Professional, Paxton Silver Partner, Part P, Hikvision Authorised Installer

What would be a typical project for you? A typical job for Nova would involve any of the areas of expertise listed, working with the customer from design stage through to commissioning. Followed by a service and maintenance contract with 24-hourr emergency support. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? For intruder we are very impressed with Orisec; the capability and variety of their equipment is of huge benefit to both us and our clients. With regards to access control, Paxton is our go to manufacturer; we find it easy for the end user to operate and their tech support is superb. For CCTV we primarily use Hikvision as the quality is very fair for the price which is a saving we can pass onto our customers. That

said, with the knowledge and expertise team Nova has we are confident with almost any reputable manufacturer. We have also been very impressed with Akuvox from CIE. We love trying out the latest tech. What is the best thing about working in this industry? For me personally it has to be the variety of clients and their properties. One day you can be installing a small alarm system in an elderly client’s bungalow and the next day you can be fitting out a stately home with state-of-the-art CCTV or installing automatic gate equipment in a wild animal life reserve. It is also nice that year after year you will return to the customer for the regular maintenance checks and can build a good relationship with them.

together raising standards Why is NSI certification important to your business? It is a great feeling when when the first question a potential client asks is are you approved and we can say “Yes we are”. We look forward to our annual inspection by NSI, it is good to know that we are working to a high standard and our inspector David Robinson is always on the end of the phone and has been very helpful. It is a shame to see so many poorly installed so-called alarm systems going into properties along with poor customer service in recent years. Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? Yes, it is a huge challenge to find an engineer with the knowledge we need. To be able to send them out on the tools immediately is almost impossible. You may be able to find someone who is great with IT but they don’t know how to use a drill. Then there is the other side when they can use the tools but don’t know what a relay is. We are currently keeping an eye out for someone to join our team but it is proving a challenge to find the right person who is a great all-round expert. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Yes, a challenge with CCTV analytics is explaining to the end user that it is no replacement for an external intruder alarm. Due to how analytics works, but looking at pixels, any number of events could falsely generate an event. That’s from Hikvision’s AcuSense or even as far up the chain as Davantis. Some are better than others but we never recommend the end user to be woken by CCTV notifications. We strongly recommend a CCTV monitoring station to be the filter and this has worked really well for our monitored CCTV clients. In fact we have found Aspire Monitoring to, on average, act on an alarm within seconds; it’s a great way to deter an intruder before they have made any damage breaking in.

“It is a great feeling when when the first question a potential client asks is are you approved and we can say “Yes we are”.” 36

with most things remotely which is a massive time saving exercise for us and a real benefit for our customers as it will often avoid an engineer callout to their premises. What would make your job easier? More government help with moving over to electric vans. Tougher laws on van and tool theft. Less of a skills shortage. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? I think the future of AI is going to introduce some very interesting technologies in our industry, we are excited to see what is to come. Who knows if it’s for good or worse. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Always wear your knee pads and mask when spending a day running cables around a loft. Pay attention to your asbestos and ladder safety courses and start your own business about 5 years earlier. Will England ever win the World Cup again? Yes, the Lionesses have done so well the last few years, I have no doubt that next time round we will win the World Cup. If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I would put it towards my dream car, a Delorean like in Back to the Future. I would then use my engineering skills to build a Flux Capacitor and I could then go back in time and give myself the advice from above!

What is the security industry’s biggest myth? Originating from the movies, the myth that all you have to do is cut the wires to kill the alarm system. The most frustrating one for me is when a black and white grainy CCTV image can be magically sharpened and zoomed into to reveal a perfectly clear number plate. We’ve tried some of the recent AI tools, just for fun and as far as I’m aware this technology still doesn’t exist. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Smart/home automation has made life so much easier for our industry. One of the main benefits we find is that we can help our customers out

Security begins at the perimeter. Here we highlight some of the latest technologies to hit the market NOTE: All technical specifications listed are provided by manufacturers

Reconeyez – Detector Reconeyez Detectors use passive infrared (PIR) sensors and signal analysis to track thermal signatures across the monitored area. The two different cameras inside the Detector capture images in all light and weather conditions. A colour daytime camera captures clear HD images during the day, a monochrome HQ camera during low light conditions and an infrared flash illuminates the area in case of darkness. Once motion is detected the Detector activates the appropriate camera for available light conditions, captures an image and generates an alarm. Move from detection to controlled protection in seconds. reconeyez.com/en

GeoZone – GZA-200 The GeoZone GZA-200 external perimiter detection kit includes 200m of GDALPA sensor cable, GeoZone analyser, end-of-line unit and tie wraps. GeoZone intrusion detection can be attached to external chain-link and semi-rigid fencing. Using its detection algorithms, the system can identify if the fence has been climbed or cut through by someone trying to gain access to a property. CCTV systems can be integrated further with a property using Geoquip systems to provide enhanced security on a property. videcon.co.uk

Heald – Viper Heald’s Viper is an imposing security roadblocker which due to its folding design, only requires a very shallow foundation depth. The shallow mount road blocker has been tested to both PAS68 and ASTM standards to give you the ultimate perimeter protection. During crash testing, the Viper roadblocker halted a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at a speed of 80 kph (50 mph) and continued to function afterwards. The Viper was tested against an N3 vehicle, which are difficult to stop due to their size in comparison to other vehicles. The shallow mount road blocker stands at 1050 mm tall when fully raised, finished with bright yellow and black stripes for high visibility as standard (other colours are available). The Viper requires the installation of a control cabinet, detection loops and ducting to allow the unit to function and communicate. heald.uk.com

Senstar – FiberPatrol FiberPatrol FP1150 is a perimeter intrusion detection system that can be fence-mounted, buried, or deployed in a wall-top configuration. When an intruder moves across the ground above a buried fibre optic sensor cable, whether walking, running, or crawling, characteristic vibrations are created. The system distinguishes these from background vibrations, and FiberPatrol FP1150 declares an alarm when the detection criteria are met. With supported distances of up to 80 km (49.7 mi), FiberPatrol FP1150 uses a single-mode fibre optic sensor within a telecommunicationsgrade cable. The integrated 4U sensor unit includes all necessary detection and gateway software – no separate integration server is required. senstar.com

GPS Perimeter – Sioux The Sioux is a detection system used to detect attempts to climb, cut or otherwise penetrate a perimeter fence. It has been designed to work on chain link, welded mesh and palisade fences. It can also provide detection of attempts to break through solid walls and metal roofing and cladding. The system comprises a series of sensors, using 3 dimensional MEMS technology, attached to the fence and configured as Master or Slave sensors. These detect the disturbances caused by an attempted intrusion and convert them into electrical signals that are collected by each master sensor. gpsperimeter.co.uk

Connectivity for a post-PSTN world BT is no longer selling new Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) lines in certain areas and Openreach is pushing ahead with plans to completely switch off all PSTN services for fixed lines at the end of 2025. According to Andy Bromley, Head of Product at CSL, this means that hundreds of thousands of critical applications need to be upgraded – and fast!

P

STN was technology first created and developed in the late 18th Century, using copper wires to create a network of underground connections. It certainly wasn’t designed to suit today’s demands. It’s about time for an upgrade! PSTN may seem reliable and stable, however in actuality, it has a far greater failure rate than Mobile Network Operators (MNO). Outages have become more and more commonplace among Communication Providers. The TEC Services Association (TSA) have reported failure rates of 11.5% when using dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones for first-time attempts to send alarms over the PSTN network in the Telecare industry. Not only is the failure rate increasing, but it’s also affecting emergency services, with 999 emergency phone services being unavailable for several hours. Even after the technical problem was fixed, there was still a “residual impact” hours later.

EDIT - Connected.indd 1

Thankfully, there has not been any reported loss of lives due to this incident. Nevertheless, this is still a warning of what might be to come. Ruth Smeeth, Baroness Anderson of Stokeon-Trent and former Labour MP says; “We all rely on the 999 emergency number as our ultimate safety net at times of distress and vulnerability. Any failure in the system will undermine faith in our emergency provision. We are seemingly very fortunate that there was no major incident yesterday morning.” Many solutions, still dependent on traditional phone lines, are being affected. Lifts, roadside emergency phones, private gates, security alarms and certain telecare devices all rely on PSTN connections.

Reliable uptime Despite MNOs and ISPs (Internet Service Providers) not offering a Service Level Agreement (SLA), they can provide an uptime across the year of 99.8%. For context, this equates to 17.5 hours of downtime over a 12-month period, as opposed to the TSA’s estimates of 88.5% uptime using PSTN in their tests.

When PSTN lines have an outage, unfortunately, there seems to be a trend of downtime for an extended period (sometimes even taking a couple of weeks for an engineer to visit the site!). The outages are much more localised and, if issues are intermittent, a less frequent test call from the alarm system (every 24 hours) can mean that the problem is not spotted for some time. All this leads to the perception that PSTN is more reliable.

Managed Multi-Path? The obvious choice is to replace a singlepath PSTN product with a single-SIM mobile solution. However, in many instances, extra resilience is needed and available. IoT Routers are available with a combination of technologies, for example: two roaming SIMs from separate providers ensure you are covered if there are any MNO-specific issues with one of them. This ensures that the MNO uptime availability is as near 100% as you can get. For example, CSL provides connectivity options that use multiple pathways, including fixed broadband, mobile and soon both

terrestrial and satellite coverage to ensure optimal uptime. Where mobile or satelliteonly devices are used, engineers will not need to connect to the local IT infrastructure or discuss with the IT department at the installation location, hopefully saving both time and money.
