www.psimagazine.co.uk EDITORIAL

Facing facial facts This month we focus on the trends we might see in 2024 and AI figures heavily. This could be a big year for one use of the technology

A

s we’ve pointed out before, the political and private agendas of the people who shout the loudest on mainstream media don’t always help provide a balanced view of a topic, yet seem to carry the most weight. One only has to consider the go-to “experts” on anything CCTV related using terms like big brother and surveillance state quoting statistics that are flimsy at best. One area under regular attack is the use of facial recognition. It is easy for newsrooms to go with the angle that we are all being watched 24/7 by some controlling overlord while public opinion is misrepresented by a pressure group complaining about freedoms and privacy. They’re ok with you using a phone with GPS in it and online search engines and store reward cards monitoring your actions, just not law enforcement and those trying to protect us by tracking where the bad guys are or finding them in a crowd. Yet all is well according to new research from Brunel University London which explains why the use of live facial recognition (LFR) technology by law enforcement authorities does not require new legislation. In the report, Dr Asress Gikay, a senior lecturer in AI, Disruptive Innovation and Law at Brunel, discusses how LFR works alongside biometric data – physical, physiological and behavioural data. “Through live facial recognition artificial intelligence (AI) software, the police compare, in real-time, biometric facial features from an image captured by a camera with existing images of people on a police watchlist. The watchlist contains images of those wanted by the police and is created for live facial recognition systems,” he said. In the paper, he also highlights the benefits of LFR technology in public spaces where the faces of thousands of people can be seen and captured. The police are required to assess the proportionality of using the technology at all times, allowing only necessary and proportionate interference with the right to privacy for justifiable reasons. Although Dr Gikay states that there are some adjustments needed to ensure that LFR is used effectively without ignoring the rights of people, his overall argument is that we do not need parliamentary intervention at this point. Which is probably confusing news for the activists because they don’t trust governments and want to reduce their meddling actions, except when it comes to getting them to ban the current thing they don’t like, then they’re all for the politicians stepping in. In 2024, if LFR proves its worth in a high-profile crime or public incident, such as CCTV did with the James Bulger case back in 1993, the pressure groups might find it is themselves under pressure in trying to convince the public that the technology is overstepping the mark.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Building Security Assessment Scheme is relaunched The City of London Crime Prevention Association (CoLCPA) has relaunched the Building Security Assessment Scheme in collaboration with the National Security Inspectorate (NSI). Formerly known as CoLCPA’s Building Security Accreditation, this long-standing initiative, developed from a joint collaboration involving the City of London Police, the City of London Corporation, representatives of managing agents and the security industry, aims to strengthen security and fire safety standards within multi-occupied commercial buildings.

Christopher Orr, an apprentice from Northern Irelands, South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has beaten off competition to lift the Nittan Shield Fire Engineering Apprentice of the Year title for 2023. Christopher, from Lisburn and employed by Crane Communications, successfully achieved the EAL Level 3 Fire & Security Apprenticeship NI at SERC’s Lisburn Campus. SERC Fire and Security Lecturers, Christopher Patterson and Robin Hamill, said: “This Award reflects performance throughout his four-years, both at work and in the College through coursework

In existence for more than a decade, the scheme serves as a benchmark reflecting the commitment of the property owners or their representatives to safeguarding their premises, staff, visitors and the public. In response to evolving security needs, CoLCPA invited NSI to refresh the scheme, ensuring it aligns with today’s security requirements while being practical for those overseeing building security. NSI is the sole third-party assessing body and has also taken over administration of the scheme, streamlining the process for applicants. The scheme criteria cover risk assessments, evacuation and invacuation plans, trauma pack accessibility, Safe Haven status, electronic security measures and personnel training including Project Kestrel fire training and counter terror training. Richard Fogelman, NSI Chief Executive responded: “We are honoured to be chosen as CoLCPA’s trusted independent assessing body for the Building Security Assessment Scheme. Reviewing and enhancing the scheme has been a privilege, ensuring its relevance in today’s challenging environment. We extend an invitation to commercial property owners and representatives in London to apply for the scheme to visibly demonstrate their security commitments and instil confidence their building security operations are dedicated to continual improvement.” and assignments. Christopher has proved himself to be an outstanding apprentice and his efforts and achievements are recognised with this Award.” Bobby Nixon, Sales Manager, Nittan Europe, presented the award and said, “Nittan is proud to be associated with the SERC Apprentice of the Year, and I am very happy to present Christopher with the Nittan Shield Award for 2023. “As a manufacturer, we understand there is a direct relationship between engineer training and customer satisfaction. We fully support the work undertaken at SERC, and our Elite Partner for Northern Ireland, Solutions for Systems, who take the time to train and nurture these apprentices. The fire industry represents a good career choice, with the current skills gap good engineers are always in demand, and now more than ever we need to ensure young people have the training resources they need to be able to learn and develop the appropriate skills.”

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Here are a few recent launches that caught our eye.

New slim access control reader for office and home Akuvox has launched the new slim-format A08 access reader for access control in limited or narrow mounting locations. The access control reader is suitable for both residential and office controlled access applications; the narrow, sleek design makes it ideal for locations with limited spaces – particularly doors frames. Available with a variety of authentication methods including RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, QR Code scanning and PIN keypad authentication, the Akuvox A08 also supports dual authentication for increased security. With IP65 and IK07 protection ratings, the A08 access reader is suitable for both indoor and outdoor location. akuvox.com

Range of analogue cameras and DVRs launched Norbain has launched an analogue range for its own brand, Vista CCTV. The VA series of analogue CCTV cameras and DVRs brings to the security solutions marketplace an alternative to IP video surveillance solutions. The cameras come in a variety of housing and lens options – dome, bullet, turret, box or PTZ. Available in 2 or 5MP, all have motorised varifocal lens, smart IR illumination and AHD/TVI/CVI/CVBS Video Support. Accompanying these are 4,8 or 16 channel true hybrid NDAA compliant DVRs, which include Vista’s video management and remote software, Vizion VMS. norbain.com

Two-wire intercoms offer easy installation Hikvision Two-Wire HD Video Intercom systems includes both indoor and outdoor video intercom stations powered by a distributor that only needs two wires – one for power and one for audio/video transmission. This setup makes things simple when upgrading an old intercom system. With fewer wires required, installers can reuse the existing ones from the previous hardware meaning that the Two-wire Video Intercom System is an ideal solution for apartment intercom retrofitting to cater to the growing needs of residents for security and convenience. To set up the system, installers simply need to power it on. Basic configurations can easily be done using the DEC knobs on the device, while all the following advanced configurations can be completed using a mobile phone with AP mode on. Mobile control allows users to talk to visitors, receive calls, check live video feeds and unlock doors remotely from anywhere, at any time. Meanwhile for the installer, device connection status can be easily checked using mobile web or the floor shunt, locating problems within a few seconds. hikvision.com/uk/

he Ajax Hub 2 Plus Jeweller is an enhanced version of their original security control Panel that can support image alarm verification when used with compatible devices. The Jeweller reference relates to the radio protocol used to communicate alarm events quickly over extended distances (up to 2000 metres in free space). Authentication and encryption secure the links and low energy use extends device battery life. It was tested here using a MotionCam unit

EDIT - Test 1.indd 1

The Hub 2 Plus must be connected to the internet for connection with the Ajax Cloud service. This is hosted on AWS servers and provides the link to the mobile app used for setup, management, and monitoring. If being installed as part of a new system, the power lead provided for the Hub 2 may have a European 2-pin plug. This can be adapted or fitted with a UK 13 Amp plug or replaced by a UK standard figure of eight socket lead. With the rear panel slid from the unit, the mains input and network RJ45 socket can be found side by side towards the top of the unit. To the right-hand side, a pair of SIM sockets allow for alternative communication channels. Once the Hub 2 is installed and configured using the Ajax app (available on iOS or Android sites) any additional devices can be added. When powered and once the power button is pressed, the front panel logo illuminates to show activity, first red, and then green when initialised (or white if Wi-Fi also enabled).

Ajax – Hub 2 Plus Jeweller (and MotionCam)

Whilst being mains powered, the Hub 2 has internal 3Ah re-chargeable batteries that give up to 15-hours backup time.

Menu options All functions are controlled by the app which has four tabs, Devices, Rooms, Notification, and Control. The Devices tab is where you can add additional devices and lists each of those currently connected. Selecting a device takes you to its status page with a gearwheel symbol to take you to the settings page (subject to permission level). The Rooms tab takes you to a page where you can add further rooms to the system and when a room is selected shows all its associated devices. The Notification Tab lists all the events and actions. From here any alarm videos can be viewed. The Control tab shows a simple control panel similar in layout to the optional key fob control. It shows the location selected and its Armed / Disarmed status. Four buttons are displayed to: Arm, Disarm, set Night Mode, or create a Panic alarm. Menu option from the top of the screen gives access to the App settings, Help accesses all of the device manuals, problems can be reported, and a Video Surveillance option can be used to access cameras from specific suppliers or using RTSP connection.

Hardware The Hub 2 has dimensions of 163 x 163 x 36mm and weighs 351g, it has a slide-off ‘SmartBracket’ that requires some force to

remove, with two recessed screw-holes used to secure the device to the bracket once installed. All antennas for wireless communication along with the Jeweller and Wings protocols are internal and any attempt at blocking the wireless communications will raise an alarm via any of the four potential signalling paths. The MotionCam has dimensions of 135 x 70 x 60mm and weighs 167g. It has a slide-off mounting plate that has four fixing points with the tamper actuator on a break-away section to alert if the unit is prised from the wall. A momentary switch on the rear panel that is only accessible with the mounting plate removed, is used to start the unit. As with most Ajax devices, the device should first be added to the app using the QR code or its associated 11-digit hexadecimal ID and then powering up the device allows it to be registered with the Hub. The PIR detector has a range of up to 12 metres and is designed for a mounting height of 2.4 metres. Its detection area is 88.5° H x 80° V. Sensitivity can be adjusted over three settings by admin users. Smart detection eliminates triggering of pets up to 20kg / 50cm height. Two CR123A batteries are said to provide up to four years’ operation in normal use.

Performance When armed and triggered the MotionCam can provide up to 5, 320 x 240 pixel (default) or 160 x 120 images or up to 3 alarm images at 640 x 480 resolution. Infrared illumination is used for low-light conditions. Verification images are transferred to the Hub 2 using the Ajax Wings protocol. When an alarm is triggered, the app will alert the user to the event, and it will appear in the notification list. This shows the type of detection, the name of the device and the location of the event. Clicking on the item displays the event images as a repeating sequence. Scrolling left and right displays the individual images from the clip. These can be downloaded to the mobile 16

EDIT - Test 1.indd 2

device for a permanent record or exported via mail or messaging. While the image resolution may be considered low by current standards, it is sufficient for verification purposes and the smaller file sizes ensure fast availability at the app. With the image set to 640 x 480, the camera gives very good image quality with file sizes around 40KB, 320 x 240 images are around 11KB. The file names are not ideal for storage as they consist of a 9-character number followed by the date in US Month, Day, Year format and a time reference. This does not give a logical sort order if stored in a common evidence folder. Alarms are transmitted to the Hub 2 in less than a second and immediately sent out to users’ mobile devices, the images are then delivered within up to 9 seconds for each 320 x 240 image or up to 17 seconds for 640 x 480, assuming good signal strength and internet connections. The MotionCam only takes images when triggered, it is assumed that CCTV system cameras will be used for detailed image capture. A version of the MotionCam is available for “Photo on demand” in addition to alarm triggered. In addition to app control, the Ajax Pro Desktop software can be used for system management and detailed information is provided for connection to third-party monitoring stations.

Conclusion Simplicity of installation and configuration makes these devices very cost-effective to install and easy to remotely support. Good readily accessible documentation and an increasing range of detection devices is available.

The annual PSI Premier Awards campaigns have recognised innovation and the highest achievers that the industry has to offer from across a number of disciplines for many years. We are now asking for nominations for the products, services and suppliers that those working in the security industry think are the best in the market. After the deadline we will then collate all of the entries and, where necessary, ask a number of installers to give us their opinions on the nominated systems. This will give us a final listing of entries that we know will be the best of the best. The types of technologies we are looking for are those that are different, not “me too” systems and we want to hear about distributors that go above and beyond box-shifting. The UK security market is brimming with talent so we want to make sure we feature the best new releases of recent times and the suppliers that give the highest levels of support.

INTERVIEW

TSE to be 40% bigger in 2024! In late April to early May 2024, security and fire installers will be heading to the NEC in Birmingham for The Security Event. In just a few years the event has grown to become a “must-attend”, so what can you look forward to?

T

he Security Event returns to the Birmingham NEC over 30 April - 2 May 2024, reuniting manufacturers, distributors, installers, integrators, consultants and end users. The exhibition will showcases leading security brands, offering visitors an opportunity to source the latest products, technologies and solutions, whilst networking and meeting face-to-face with key experts from across the industry. In addition to the exhibition hall, attendees can keep up-to-date with the latest developments and issues in security via a comprehensive, free-to-attend, accredited CPD education programme featuring seminars, case studies and workshops. To find out more about what’s in store for 2024, we caught up with Peter Poole, Sales Director at the event organiser Nineteen Group: How is the show looking for 2024? ‘MEGA!’ Following another hugely successful and popular edition in 2023, we decided to move The Security Event (TSE) into Hall 5 of the NEC Birmingham to facilitate demand allowing for more exhibition space. Therefore the 2024 edition is 40% larger than last year, we are currently 97% sold out and we will showcase

over 350 global leading security manufacturers, suppliers and service providers. TSE will also share Hall 5 with the Fire Safety Event, which is also the UK’s biggest show for active and passive fire safety and it alone has also grown by 48% hosting over 175 global leading manufacturers and suppliers. Have you been surprised how quickly TSE has become so successful? We assembled a very compelling plan for TSE and always had the belief that it would become the nations ‘biggest, best and favourite’ security show. In terms of our rapid rise, ‘yes’ there is an element of surprise that we have managed to achieve this inside only four editions, not to mention an 18month lockdown on tradeshows due to the pandemic. There aren’t many tradeshows that have ever had such a journey like TSE and it is something the entire security industry should be very proud of achieving – we have all played our part! It is a competitive market, lots of security shows happening across the globe throughout the calendar year and to be hailed by the UK security community as their No.1 show of choice as well as being recognised on the world stage is incredible.

EDIT - Interview.indd 3

Is there anything new for the next event? Absolutely there is, and why? We want our entire community to really look forward to coming to TSE, we want the show to be enjoyable, fun and for everyone to leave with a real sense of fulfilment having had a really rewarding experience. So it’s important to keep raising the bar every year! Focusing on our exhibitors, we are renowned for hosting global leading ‘high quality’ manufacturers and suppliers and how have we delivered? 250 returning 2023 exhibitors, 100 NEW exhibitors of which 77 are BRAND-NEW having never participated before. TSE is going to be packed full with all the latest and greatest

security technology, hardware, software, services and so much more. Building upon the enormous success of last year’s inaugural Access Control Executive Brief Theatre which featured thought leadership sessions and a tech showcase, our extended 2024 partnership has evolved to introduce “The Forum”. This enhanced activation will include a standalone stage with a larger seating capacity for engaging presentations and thought leadership sessions on various topics such as digital transformation, enterprise software, best practices, cloud and mobile computing, and much more. This exclusive collaboration will unite industry leaders, showcase thought leadership and highlight business innovations in the access control and smart lock industry through presentations, round table discussions and creative storytelling. Another MAJOR addition is the exclusive debut of the internationally renowned Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) who is set to unveil its groundbreaking Live Testing Lab. It will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to witness a team of professional forced entry specialists engaging with a diverse range of physical security products. From windows to fencing and locks to doorsets, the live demonstrations will showcase the resilience and effectiveness of these products in the face of simulated intrusion scenarios. Visitors can explore cutting-edge solutions, including bollards, barriers, gates, fencing, locks and much more. Finally, we are expanding our partnership with Skills for Security to create an immersive zone featuring breakfast briefings, training courses, and a live competition onsite for future security engineers. Winners of the competition will advance to the WorldSkills Championship (WSUK). WSUK, is a charity dedicated to enhancing standards in apprenticeships and technical education, conducts an annual competition across various sectors, prioritising both technical and soft skills development. At The Security Event, we take pride in our role in nurturing the next generation of security professionals and facilitating their growth. Which technology trends will be prevalent this year? The pace of change in our industry is expected to continue at a rapid rate, based on the developments of the past twelve months. We have seen significant advancements in the adoption and reliability of AI, such as the effectiveness of security systems in detecting

incidents. These systems not only prioritise safety and security but also drive revenues and reduce inefficiencies. As the security industry becomes more focused on software, the convergence between physical and cyber security is increasing. This is fuelled by the growing use of connectivity, smart systems, and IoT applications. Businesses and users are more aware of the threats posed by bad actors, making cybersecurity a core discipline in our industry. Based on my observations, the evolution of access control is expected to be a significant trend in physical security by 2024. Similar to the shift from analogue to IP in video security, organisations are demanding improvements in operational efficiencies and user experiences. With the increasing adoption of cloudfirst, mobile-first and AI-first architecture technologies, we are seeing rapid adaptations and transformations in this space, such as the application of biometrics, facial recognition, touchless access, mobile credentials, and remote access management. The participation of major global access control innovators at TSE, along with the Access Control Executive Brief hosted by Lee Odess, will contribute to shaping the future in this field. It will be fascinating to see how these developments unfold and the impact they have on the industry. How much input do you take from visitors, especially installers, when planning the event? A monumental amount – I eluded to it in a previous question but without any doubt TSE would not be the UKs leading security show without the regular feedback we get from the security community and in particular the installers. We’re engaged all year round with our visitors gaining insight, feedback and ideas to ensure the show lives up to their expectations.

“Our visitors importantly give up their time, incur costs for various means of travel and accommodation so it is vitally important to us as the organiser that they too get a return on their investment” Coming to a tradeshow like TSE is an investment for everyone. Our visitors importantly give up their time, incur costs for various means of travel and accommodation so it is vitally important to us as the organiser that they too get a return on their investment. What is usually your highlight of the event week? The entire week is the highlight! We plan for the show all year and to see it in action is immense. Having regular engagement with the community all year encouraging them to either exhibit or visit and seeing how happy they are during the show is exceptionally rewarding. How important do you think trade shows are in the modern world? Exceptionally important. Trade shows have been around for centuries and personally having been involved myself in major-scale shows for nearly two decades it is easy to see why. From an exhibitors point of view, the average cost of a face-to-face meeting with a prospect at a tradeshow is significantly less to a meeting at a prospects office, in fact close to half. To also put this into context for a visitor, how much time across the year do they spend meeting with manufacturers/suppliers, researching/ reviewing new products – time that could otherwise be spent on revenue earning projects. The best tradeshows are able to condense all of this for the industry and TSE has become a major diary date in our industry’s calendar as a must-attend event and we hope to welcome many of your readers from 30 April to 02 May at the NEC Birmingham.

DISTRIBUTION

Expanding with security

A good distributor is ahead of the curve when it comes to new technology, trends and added value services. We caught up with one of the freshest security distributors on the scene to find out what’s hot in the market

D

espite forming back in 1981 when founder Julian Nimans started selling and fixing CB radios, Manchester-based distributor Nimans, only added security to its portfolio in 2019. From those humble beginnings, the company has since grown to become BT’s sole distributor in 2017 and expanding its warehouse to 50,000sq/ft in 2018 to hold its £20m stock. Today, Nimans is part of the Midwich Group and in June 2023, Nimans Security was established as a sub-brand, specifically catered to the needs and demands of specialist security & AV. We visited the company’s purpose-built HQ and sat down with Camilla Kirkham, Director of Sales, Security & AV to find out more about the security side of the business and to discuss trends and technology: How is business at the moment? It’s going really well; we’ve seen 33% year-onyear growth over the past four years. We’ve recently been focusing on building our team up to get even stronger. We’ve hired in the fields of technical support, sales and marketing and hopefully this continues to grow as time goes on. Considering we are quite young in terms of security; we are feeling positive. So why did the company start distributing security technology? The company embarked on distributing security technology as a strategic response to the evolving landscape of traditional Nimans

product offerings. With a noticeable shift from on-site to cloud-based solutions within the product range, there was a recognition that hardware sales would undergo a reduction. To adapt to this transition, the company conducted surveys within its customer base to understand their technological aspirations and preferences. The overwhelming feedback emphasised a strong desire to enter the security domain, as it was perceived as a pivotal IPM point.

Camilla Kirkham

What part of security would you say is your strength? Nimans Security adopts a comprehensive approach, positioning itself as a one-stop-shop for diverse installation needs. As a part of the Midwich Group, we boast a broad spectrum of technology, ranging from AV to CCTV and access control. While we also supply alarms, our specialisation lies in products seamlessly integrating with security systems, including various networking components such as network switches and routers. This inclusive approach enables us to provide all necessary equipment for meeting rooms and offices, expanding the range of IP-based services installers can offer. What technology is currently popular with installers? Prominent brands gaining traction in the CCTV realm include Hanwha Vision and Hikvision, especially for turret cameras. In the realm of access control, Akuvox and ACT are notable contenders due to the rising significance of

(continued from page 27)

Which technologies are not as popular as they used to be? The waning popularity of analogue CCTV systems is evident, with demand decreasing. While HD analogue systems are still in circulation, their necessity is primarily associated with legacy installations or specific constraints. Additionally, PTZ cameras are experiencing a decline due to the superior capabilities of high-megapixel cameras that offer detailed coverage. They still have a role to play in the sector, but I’d say that high megapixel cameras that are capable of seeing everything in high detail are replacing PTZs.

From humble beginnings, the company expanded its warehouse to 50,000sq/ft to hold its £20m stock

cloud storage. These brands are favoured for features such as motion-triggered white light and analytics capabilities. The transformative potential of these technologies extends beyond security, offering valuable insights for HR, marketing, and health and safety purposes. I particularly like seeing how companies develop technology from the original idea. We’ve got a supplier with a product called Device Smart which started off as a security light. Traditionally lights don’t always look so good, so to make them suitable for high-networth properties, the company launched linear lights to help reduce crime. What concerns do installers bring to you? Foremost among installers’ concerns is the challenge of staying updated on training and technology. Adequate support from brands is crucial, and keeping pace with the rapid influx of new technologies, software updates, and products reaching end-of-life poses a significant challenge.

“Prominent brands gaining traction in the CCTV realm include Hanwha Vision and Hikvision, especially for turret cameras. In access control, Akuvox and ACT are notable contenders” 28

EDIT - Distribution.indd 3

What do you hear about installers using AI features? While analytics features on cameras are widely employed, the adoption of true AI systems is on the rise. For instance, a product in our current portfolio detects various noises, such as the sound of windows smashing, evolving its understanding over time. The distinction between analytics and AI is evolving, offering exciting possibilities for time and effort savings in surveillance and monitoring. I think it’s really exciting what we might be able to do with AI and how much time and effort it will save us especially with regard to surveillance and monitoring.

Are installers always receptive to new technologies? Installers must remain vigilant against complacency and embrace evolving technologies. The rapid development of new systems necessitates a proactive approach to avoid sticking to familiar equipment. IP cameras, for instance, took time to gain widespread acceptance among installers. Given that, how do you decide on new brands to take on? The decision to onboard new brands is informed by market demand, internal assessment of the product’s utility, and its potential to enhance value for installers and customers. The focus is on ensuring that the technology is innovative and offers added value compared to existing options. If you had a dream security product that you could sell, what would it be? An ideal security product, from my perspective, would prioritise prevention over detection. I imagine a wireless, weatherproof system with facial recognition capabilities. The ultimate goal would be to proactively change behaviour, discouraging potential criminal activities. The emphasis is not just on enhancing the sense of safety but actively deterring criminal intent. What are your predictions for the market going forward? Anticipating the future trajectory, cloud technology is expected to play a pivotal role, though challenges related to network infrastructure persist. The growth of analytics will continue, adding enhanced functionality to existing systems. Moreover, increased integration between diverse products is foreseen as IP-enabled installations and products drive innovation in the sector.

PANEL

What’s in store for 2024? Will it be a Happy New Year or an annus horribilis for the security industry in 2024? The PSI Panel discusses the next twelve months Our usual topic for this time of year again sees the PSI Panel of experts pondering the possible future we have to look forward to over the coming months. Have a read and see if you agree:

“It is all very new and exciting see how AI will change the sector, but we must be mindful of addressing privacy concerns in line with the evolving regulatory environment”

Jaroslav Barton – HID There’ll be an ever-growing need for both physical and cyber security protection especially as a lot of services today rely on the Internet and cloud applications and the number of threat actors continually increase. Mobile access has come of age and is being widely deployed as many firms see the benefits of combining access control with smartphones, namely: better security, user friendliness and faster and more efficient credential management. APIs and SDKs enable integration of mobile access with security systems and smart building platforms which are now commonly used in the commercial real estate sector. Smart phones will also enable adding new functionalities like indoor positioning to show who’s using facility spaces—where, when and how. It will be more and more crucial that installers select solutions that aren’t proprietary and have an open architecture so that different security devices can talk to each other. Therefore, we see further increased adoption of the OSDP communication protocol which has become an international and European standard. As firms seek to be more sustainable and meet their ESG goals, mobile access is the clear choice as wasteful PVC access cards can be avoided to reduce the 2,700 tons of plastic needed for annual access card production. However, we acknowledge there are some situations where mobile access isn’t the right fit so cards made from bamboo or other biodegradable materials will become important, too. For integrated security systems, AI and machine learning algorithms will allow security systems to discriminate better between authorised and unauthorised users; detecting anomalies and potential threats more efficiently

than human operators. Equally, AI can recognise patterns of behaviour that may indicate a security threat, often unseen by human eyes, and with predictive analysis, AI can also use historical data to predict and prevent future security breaches. It is all very new and exciting see how AI will change the sector, but we must be mindful of addressing privacy concerns in line with the evolving regulatory environment.

Dave Tate – Ajax Systems First and foremost, we anticipate a surge in the integration of AI and machine learning into security systems. These technologies will play a pivotal role in enhancing threat detection capabilities, offering more proactive and adaptive solutions to safeguard homes and businesses. Furthermore, privacy concerns are likely to take center stage in 2024. As security systems become more sophisticated, the responsible and ethical use of data will be a paramount consideration. Striking the right balance between effective security measures and respecting individuals’ privacy rights will be a key challenge for the industry. Cybersecurity, as always, will remain a critical focus. With an increasing number of cyber threats and sophisticated attack vectors, security professionals will need to stay ahead of 29

“Continuing to target Millennials and Gen Z for our immediate requirements, while engaging with Gen Alpha for the future will see 2024 be another step forward in securing our industry’s long-term growth aspirations”

the curve to protect against data breaches and cyber-attacks.

George Zitko – Zitko Group The big recruitment talking points will be the mobility and availability of talent and what employers in the industry are doing successfully to engage, attract and retain the right people. The successful, growing employers are creating apprentice programmes, talent academies, training pathways and mini universities. They’re tapping into new and diverse talent pools and engaging with a workforce more willing than ever to hear what the industry has to offer. With more employers embracing this opportunity, either through foresight or necessity, we can expect an increase in the supply of personnel, reducing expectations and demand which in turn will lower the salary hyperinflation we’ve seen since 2022. There will be a reduction in market competitiveness so the second half of the year should start to see the rebalancing of the relationship between employer and jobseeker, albeit slowly! The main recruitment trends for 2024 are similar to those in 2023. Flexibility around the work environment, personal development, and social responsibility (or ESG) all feature highly. Employees want to be trusted to do their work, have a productive and balanced life, be trained by their employer, and know that their company has strong core values. Positively, the overall factors that drive talent to our industry haven’t changed for ten years.

Tina Hughan – Gunnebo In 2024, we see the vital role of entrance control across sectors as increasingly needing to balance security and the latest technology with a welcoming environment. The demand for smart and contactless entrance control solutions will continue apace. We anticipate an increased focus on technologies such as facial recognition, touchless biometrics, and mobile credentials. These innovations not only enhance security but also respond to the growing emphasis on personalised health and safety in public spaces. Integrating features such as pre-registration, contactless check-in, and real-time communication will be pivotal in providing a seamless and secure visitor journey. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into entrance control systems, marks a significant leap in intelligence and automation. AI can support the proactive approach to threat detection and behavioural analytics. It will allow for more responsive security, especially for sensitive and critical infrastructure such as data centres where every second counts, especially set against rising cyber security threats.

30

EDIT - Panel attempt to get back on style.indd 3

Employers just needs to be better at tapping into them. Stability, progression, variety, resilience, tangible work, making a difference, earning potential, flexibility, benefits. These all remain key drivers to both recruit and retain people in our industry. And as we know, once people join this industry, they stay in it! Continuing to target Millennials and Gen Z for our immediate requirements, while engaging with Gen Alpha for the future will see 2024 be another step forward in securing our industry’s long-term growth aspirations.

Jamie Allam – Amthal As we embark on a new year, Amthal is preparing for a wave of evolving security trends that will continue to redefine the landscape. These are not only in the realm of innovative products but also in our service approach and collective responsibility. The first is the industry embracing and adopting artificial intelligence into our security, a call that is likely to be increasingly driven by end users as they see the operational benefits. These advanced technologies offer unparalleled capabilities in data analysis, enabling more sophisticated threat detection, a reduction of false alarms, pattern recognition, and a proactive speedier response option (to the level of instant.) AI-driven solutions will play a crucial role in enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of security measures. The reduction of the burden on human resources has also been identified as a factor. A greater reliance on cloud-based platforms will continue, especially for visual verification systems, access control and data storage. Whilst many operate hybrid models, cloudbased solutions offer scalability, flexibility, and remote management capabilities, aligning with the evolving needs of businesses seeking efficient and accessible security infrastructure. Biometric access control systems will go beyond traditional fingerprint recognition, advancements in facial recognition, iris scanning, and even behavioural biometrics will gain traction. These innovations not only enhance security but also contribute to a seamless and frictionless user experience, marking a significant shift in access control capability. Each of these characteristics will evolve security technology and will have its benefits per sector challenge. It is my personal belief that in the new year, in recognising this, there will be a marked shift towards personalisation. Tailored security measures per industry, environment and even individual

SMOKE DETECTION

Mark Wall – Wall2Wall The landscape of commercial security is in a constant state of evolution, driven by advancements in technology, changing threats and the need for more sophisticated solutions. As we look ahead to 2024, businesses must be proactive and stay ahead of the curve. The main trends of integration, open platforms and opportunities for partnership will be key to success. Cloud-based security solutions will become the norm in 2024, offering scalability, remote accessibility, and streamlined management. The cloud’s role in storing and analysing security data remotely will enhance accessibility and cost-effectiveness for businesses. Visual surveillance, extending beyond the confines of buildings, will witness a surge in use. Notably, body cameras in retail, already seen as a response to escalating crime rates, are poised to become standard practice. The Internet of Things (IoT) will maintain its significance, with smart cameras, sensors, and access control systems delivering real-time data and automation for proactive and effective security measures. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will further augment security. Precise predictive analytics will allow businesses to proactively identify potential threats before they happen for staff to react accordingly. AI-powered cameras and sensors will enhance real-time analysis, improving response times and reducing false alarms. The reliance on AI for threat detection, prediction, and response is expected to increase beyond the current 51% of enterprises. Integration remains a prevailing trend, with facial recognition gaining wider adoption for secure access control. It seamlessly integrates into surveillance systems, enhancing identification and authentication processes. All this can be powered by the advances in 5G networks, enabling faster and more reliable communications. This will support high-definition video streaming, real-time analytics, and quicker response times. It will aid the countdown towards the PSTN switch-off in 2025. With all the talk of surveillance, data analysis and AI will bring to the fore privacy concerns and increased regulation. This will need to be carefully navigated to protect customer and employee privacy. And that’s without even referring to the rise in cybercrime and associated risks. Last but not least, as we have seen at several exhibitions the rise of drones and robotics. Drones can provide aerial surveillance, while robotic security guards can patrol large areas and provide real-time video feeds. Looking ahead, the future of commercial security in 2024 is poised to be dynamic and technology-driven. Amid discussions of market disruption, the sector’s essence is positive, where we have a real opportunity and duty of care to enable customers to embrace new security technology for their respective industries. client requirements will become increasingly important. This customisation ensures that security solutions are not only effective but also aligned with unique challenges and objectives. And it will likely introduce even more focus on integrated solutions with life safety and building management solutions. This will all have an impact on our industry, with the need for partnerships and closer collaborations. When there is still a critical issue with staff and skills shortages, we must work towards a sector where we embrace working together and sharing of information, looking to improve overall situational awareness and response capability. We have already felt the benefits of working in partnership with Honeywell and Gallagher. As security budgets and investments are predicted to increase in 2024, this cooperative approach presents our sector with a real opportunity to surge forward and deliver much-needed peace of mind.

Mark Taylor – RISCO As we step into 2024, the physical security industry is poised for transformation. Drawing on our 45 years of manufacturing security

solutions, we anticipate that the following key trends will shape the upcoming year. There will be an increased emphasis on integration and interoperability. The trend of security systems seamlessly integrating with smart technologies will accelerate, fostering cohesive ecosystems that will boost overall safety. This continued integration will streamline operations for installers and provide commercial and residential end users with more comprehensive solutions. AI is set to play an instrumental role in the future of physical security. Video analytics and machine learning will revolutionise surveillance with real-time threat detection and predictive analytics. The industry buzz suggests these advancements are on the near horizon, compelling installers to adapt and embrace AIdriven solutions to stay at the forefront. Cybersecurity measures for physical security systems will become more important than ever. As technology advances, the convergence of physical and digital security solutions increases vulnerability to cyber threats. Smart, interconnected security systems make cybersecurity crucial, as a breach can compromise safety measures. In integrated security solutions, a compromise in just one element - whether access control or cameras poses risks. Manufacturers and installers must

(continued from p31)

Brad McMullen – 3xLogic 2023 marked a significant point in the security industry, with cloud based solutions really taking hold and adding value to dealers and customers. Similarly, video analytics cemented its role not only in security but also in business intelligence, organisational efficiency, employee safety, compliance, energy efficiency and overall situational awareness. I think that this will only accelerate during 2024 and continue to have an impact on the way that security based technology is specified and installed. As with most other business sectors, artificial intelligence (AI) will be a key focus in 2024 and will build on its ability to reduce nuisance alarms, detect suspicious behaviour, provide greater insights and facilitate faster response times. Where AI is set to really revolutionise security is through predictive analytics that allow security cameras to be ‘trained’ to identify suspicious activities in real-time, potentially preventing criminal acts from occurring. AI can also be used to analyse data from other sensors, such as motion sensors, door sensors and temperature sensors to detect anomalies and identify potential security threats. Although National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) compliance has been hitting the headlines, it feeds into the wider issue about how and where products are manufactured. The need to ensure customer data is secure and not vulnerable will continue to be a high priority area and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will be a critical focus for all areas of the industry including manufacturers, developers, installers, service providers and hosting providers. Ensuring products continue to come from reputable and trusted sources will be vital, so the NDAA and CRA will therefore work hand in hand. On a geopolitical level, we are living in a world where often times threats and risks are increasing for businesses in regard to protecting their people, their assets and their customers. The security industry will need to continue to grow to support the everchanging needs of our collective client base.

“The shortage of security engineers persists and potential post-UK election shifts in apprenticeship policy may impact the industry”

enhance their cybersecurity practices to ensure end user resilience. The shortage of security engineers persists and potential post-UK election shifts in apprenticeship policy may impact the industry. If the reigning party commits to more apprenticeships – and completions collaboration between government, education, and industry will be crucial. To strengthen the workforce, the industry needs partnerships for specialised apprenticeships, better financial incentives and simplification of the complex apprenticeship levy to promote increased business participation. Facing these challenges amid economic uncertainty, the security industry will need to be resilient, collaborative and innovative to pave the way for a more robust future.

Mike Isherwood – System Q I have three predictions for the year ahead: Increased emphasis on IoT Security and NDAA as security products are becoming increasingly integrated solutions, focus on IoT security will increase significantly. Network and data security are only as strong as their weakest point and whilst the benefits of integrated solutions are clear from a functionalist perspective, connectivity with third party devices could leave security products vulnerable. Technology that is on the NDAA block list will continue to fall out of favour with the public sector and large business sectors. 32

EDIT - Panel attempt to get back on style.indd 5

Zero Trust Framework Adoption - we expect there to be uptake on the Zero Trust Framework approach to large scale IP based security solutions. This means that devices will be expected to continuously verify that they are trusted devices. Initially this will impact the upper end of the market, but I expect it to trickle down over time. Clarity over AI functions - organisations will be expected to train their AI algorithms with a robust data set. They will be expected to sustain the performance of their products and be able to explain inaccuracies which may create false-positives. This creates a dilemma in the security industry for distributors and resellers who may be challenged in these areas, especially in public sector deployments. The UK Government’s National AI Strategy will need to be carefully studied and investment will be required from the channel to respond to the demands for trusted security solutions.

Ric Martin – Pinnacle Systems The landscape of physical security is in a constant state of evolution, driven by advancements in technology, changing threats, and the need for more sophisticated solutions. We believe 2024 will see a distinct movement away from basic security defences in favour of innovative hybrid solutions. One where human resources can work together in harmony with data analysis and technology to create a safe and secure working environment.

While the traditional security measures of access control, visual surveillance, and alarm systems have been foundational, the evolving threat landscape now demands a more proactive and adaptive approach. This shift is spurred by the recognition that security is not a one-size-fits-all concept; it requires a dynamic and tailored strategy to effectively mitigate risks. In 2024, we anticipate an increased emphasis on intelligent security systems powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These technologies are poised to revolutionise commercial security by enabling predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and automated response mechanisms. Rather than merely responding to incidents, businesses are embracing a proactive stance, leveraging AI to identify potential threats before they escalate.

There will be a heightened focus on cybersecurity resilience, acknowledging the interconnected nature of physical and digital security. As organisations integrate more smart devices into their environments, the attack surface for cyber threats expands. The need for robust cybersecurity protocols is imperative to safeguard sensitive information and ensure the integrity of security systems. The evolution of biometric access control is another key trend. While traditional fingerprint recognition has been a stalwart in this field, emerging biometric technologies, such as facial and iris recognition, will continue to gain prominence. These advancements not only enhance security measures but also contribute to a more seamless and user-friendly experience, aligning with the growing demand for frictionless access. All this will consolidate to increase the requirements for open integrated solutions, which allows different security systems to communicate and collaborate. This is not only to enhance the overall effectiveness of security measures but also to facilitate centralised management and streamlined operations. Open integrated solutions allow businesses to choose the best components for their specific needs, promoting flexibility and scalability in adapting to evolving security challenges. The vision is to keep listening and keep integrating, and to build a digital eco-system that can bring together technology in a simple, easy manner to help improve safety, and security and bring return on investment through loss prevention. In essence, the trend towards open integration aligns with the broader industry shift towards comprehensive, collaborative, and futureproof security solutions that can effectively navigate the complexities of the modern security landscape.

“The outlook for the security industry is positive, electronic security along with cyber services and data driven decision making is on a steep curve, I don’t see this changing in 2024”

The PSI Panel predictions for 2024 continues in next month’s edition

Carl Meason – Fenix Monitoring In 2024 services utilising continuously improving AI will be created and the meshing of physical and electronic security, involving AI, will continue to emerge. This can not be stopped and the winners will be those who embrace and develop those new services. Cloud based technologies will continue to replace local equipment and the battle between automation and people is likely to heat up. Driving down costs in a world where people are becoming less necessary will continue to be the main focus. The paradox for individual services will keep the people element alive though, in the short term that is, this need will continue to drive those technology services to develop and erode those people services. I am afraid some installers will see the PSTN switch land directly on the doorstep. Apathy in relation to this could impact end user services and not being prepared for this could very well damage these businesses that leave it too late. The result may be the loss of additional revenue that monitoring systems generate along with some customer confidence in the end to end monitoring benefit. The pressure on businesses in relation to maintaining competitive wages and businesses maintaining current tax structures is a constant battle. All businesses will be looking at the government for some assistance as we get closer to the election run in. After weathering a difficult time in the past few years some much needed tax relief will be hoped for to encourage positive business investment and momentum. The outlook for the security industry is positive, electronic security along with cyber services and data driven decision making is on a steep curve, I don’t see this changing in 2024.

FACING THE FUTURE How 2020 could change the security industry

together raising standards

Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? Trinity designs, installs and maintains fire detection, public address/voice alarm, emergency lighting, fire suppression, access control, CCTV, intruder alarm systems, and fire extinguishers. Our clients include blue chip customers in sectors including airports, hospitals, FM, universities, shopping centres and projects are typically complex upgrades across fire and security systems. London Heathrow Airport is our largest client and undoubtedly the most complex and challenging environment in which to work. However, we deliver our services in a wide spectrum of industry sectors, each of which has its own unique demands. Each is equally important to us. Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? We have developed partnerships with all of the key security and fire technology providers including Honeywell, JCI/Tyco, Baldwin Boxall, Gallagher, Paxton, Milestone, Axis and many more. Our highly trained designers and engineers ensure that every system installed and/or maintained by Trinity is always kept at optimal performance for changing site scenarios and user requirements. What is the best thing about working in this industry? Protecting people, businesses and livelihoods. It goes without saying that fire and security is a safety-critical industry. The products and services we deliver are designed to save lives – that’s always our priority. However, a fire or a

breach of security can also be hugely damaging to a business. If our products can minimise and ideally eliminate disruption to people’s lives and livelihoods, we can be happy that we have done a good job. Is NSI certification important to your business? Yes absolutely. Accreditations and thirdparty auditing are the bedrock of what we build our business on assuring customers we are accredited and compliant to the highest standards. We value inspections and audits as a means of highlighting good performance as well as identifying under performance. Audits are tools to help us sustain continuous improvement, which is part of our culture at Trinity.

together raising standards Do you think there is an engineer skills shortage? Any trouble recruiting? There is a huge industry shortage of good quality engineers. There seems to be a real lack of new talent entering the industry, which is why we pride ourselves on our apprenticeship programme where we actively train and develop our engineers. We are extremely proud of the fact that over 25% of our workforce has come via our apprenticeship scheme and moved on to be some of our most valued technical and dedicated staff. We draw our apprentices from graduates, school leavers and adult learners, and we’ve recruited another eleven across the UK in 2023. Craig, an apprentice from our 2010 cohort, has recently been promoted to Design and Estimating Manager, leading a team. Craig has worked through many different engineering roles before rising to his present role. We are continually promoting and developing our people and we reiterate our commitment to career progression at Trinity as it underscores the value we place on our apprenticeship programme. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? The increasing use of customer portals is adding admin time to our teams, but in most cases training and support is provided by the supplier. We look for ways to integrate customer process requirements with our own systems and processes, so that innovations can be shared across our operations, to benefit Trinity and our other customers. Collaborative working is part of our culture and by aligning our processes and practices with those of our clients, we invariably get the optimum results. What is the security industry’s biggest myth? It’s still a common myth that when there’s a fire, the flames cause the most casualties. Smoke is generally what injures or kills people when there is a fire. Smoke can become highly toxic from carbon monoxide and the different materials the fire burns. It is vital to take a coordinated approach to fire and security in a building. Fire detection equipment, such as smoke detectors, will alert building users before a fire breaks out. This gives people time to act calmly. If a fire does break out in a building, sprinkler systems are statistically the most effective means of extinguishing it. The vast majority of fires in

EDIT - Meet the Installer.indd 3

sprinklered buildings are extinguished with only one sprinkler head operating. What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? This is a positive change. Consumers are keen to harness technology to enhance their work and living space. Coupled with increased awareness of safety and security, we see great potential for our security and fire installations in the smart building environment. By working collaboratively with organisations and applying our industry experience and knowledge of the latest innovations, we can ensure they have a sound fire and security strategy in place. What would make your job easier? My biggest frustration and challenge is recruiting new talent, especially engineers. We are working on raising awareness in the employment market of Trinity as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of fire and security systems. Whether there is something that can be done at a national level, via the government, or through local recruitment, we would welcome the opportunity to source new talent more easily. We recently held our first recruitment evening at our central hub in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which was very well received. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? Having a manufacturer agnostic live compliance and monitoring system across all fire and security platforms. Most systems are built by manufacturers for their own protocol but don’t span multiple platforms. By having this monitoring system, it would make our customers lives easier and enable us to do our jobs even more effectively. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? That anything is possible if you work hard enough. I have worked my way up from being an apprentice to becoming the Managing Director of one of the largest national fire and security companies in the UK which I am immensely proud of. If you have confidence and aren’t afraid to be open about your aspirations, pride yourself on being the hardest worker in the room you can take your career to any level you want to. This is a fast-moving industry and technology is opening new doors all the time, enabling even greater levels of innovation and what is possible. Embrace it! Will England ever win the World Cup again? Hopefully within my lifetime, I don’t think it’s that far away! With some of the emerging talent like Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, I expect us to really challenge to win a tournament in the next few years.

PAXTON

Paxton looks to the future In November, Paxton officially opened a new manufacturing facility called the Paxton Electronics Centre. The milestone coincided with the British manufacturer’s continued global expansion and increased customer demand for products and services

T

he new facility is the next step in the security technology developer’s vision for their UK technology park in Brighton, East Sussex. The site which is nestled between the universities of Sussex and Brighton, encompasses the company’s UK headquarters Paxton House, the Paxton Technology Centre, their public facing product test facility, Brighton EMC, and now the newly opened Paxton Electronics Centre. This modern campus is where Paxton products and systems start their development journey and route to international markets. Adam Stroud, Paxton’s longstanding CEO, explains: “We are extremely proud of the Paxton Electronics Centre. It is a manufacturing facility that will support the needs of our customers and planned rapid growth for a decade or more.” And as Paxton’s customer base has grown so has the development of new technology required, as Adam explains: “Electronic access control has always been the core product of the company and for the last decade or so we’ve diversified into video entry systems, electronic door handle systems, video management and increasingly now in smart buildings as well.” The Paxton Electronics Centre has taken just under a year to transform from a dilapidated warehouse into a state-of-the-art manufacturing

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT - Paxton.indd 2

facility with an emphasis on developing new techniques for sustainable production. Andrew Clark, Manufacturing Engineering Manager, has been instrumental to the project. He explains: “We have invested in a new surface-mount line and installed a new wave solder line. All the new manufacturing equipment is energy efficient to the latest standards. “Additionally, we have set aside part of the facility with a long-term vision for investigation into new efficient, sustainable and innovative manufacturing techniques.”

“We are extremely proud of the Paxton Electronics Centre. It is a manufacturing facility that will support the needs of our customers and planned rapid growth for a decade or more”

Continual growth The Paxton story began with humble start in a small factory in Sussex in 1985, when businessman Tony Brotherton-Ratcliffe invented a single door keypad reader called the TOUCHLOCK. This put Paxton at the forefront of the electronic access control evolution and the company continues to innovate around smart devices and video technology. It’s been the simplicity and quality of the products and the level of technical support from Paxton, that have resulted in the rise of the business, rather than through boardroom decisions, as Adam Stroud explains: “The Electronics Centre is all about scaling up the company. All our growth so far has been 37

organic, none has been inherited through the acquisition of any companies or external investment. The growth has been funded purely through the reinvestment of the profit we make selling products, that’s it. “We sell our products by training installation companies in a quality way, free of charge, and then we make sure that when engineers go on to use our products and if they run into any problems, we answer the phone and help them. That’s the simple, successful strategy we have in selling to countries around the world.” In fact, the company now employs over 400 people globally and provides security technology to over 64 countries, securing approximately 30,000 buildings annually with their security systems Net2, Paxton10, Entry, and PaxLock.

EDIT - Paxton.indd 3

Another of Paxton’s key principles is sustainability and reducing the impact that the business has on the environment. At the opening ceremony, Adam revealed their latest plans: “We’ve got 96 solar panels here and, given our location, they are predicted to make around 35 kilowatt hours of electricity every year which equates to about one month in every year that we’ll be using solely renewable energy. The bigger we get, the more impact we make on the world, so it is increasingly important that we carefully consider our environmental impact and continually challenge the way we do business.” Adam also has a plan to instantly cut the carbon footprint of the company by increasing the amount of stock held in the UK: “Like many global manufacturers we have components from China and from Taiwan. We make the finished products here in the UK and then

distribute them to all our markets, with the biggest overseas transportation being to the US. We now hold around £12 million in stock. By investing in this amount, we’ve been able to transition from air freight to sea freight which is vastly more efficient - it’s about 5% of the CO2 emissions of air freight. This is a very significant development because we have now reduced our yearly CO2 emissions by 950 tons per year, which is 70% of our total logistics CO2 emissions. “We’ve also reduced our reliance on other companies doing the manufacturing for us by investing in our Eastbourne facility with a new injection mould press, enabling us to make our own plastic housings and plastic components for our most popular reader, also using recycled plastic. We sell so many of these housings that they accounted for transporting 40 sea containers per year. Because we are now making these locally in our own UK facility, we’ve got more control over the supply and will be able to reduce our carbon footprint further. “Due to all of these changes we’ve brought in, we are now on our journey to net zero.”

The future According to Adam Stroud, the opening of the Paxton Electronics Centre is not the end of the story for the company’s development in Brighton. They are currently working on plans to build Brighton’s first technology park on the site: “As a proud UK technology manufacturer established in Sussex, this investment confirms our commitment to international growth, local jobs, and British manufacturing,” Adam concludes. “We continue to invent and develop forward-thinking real-world security solutions for our valued customers globally.”

Object detection perfection Adapting AI to different needs That changes the game for security teams. It makes it easier to adapt AI object detection to specific business needs. While most AI-powered video cameras can detect common objects like people, faces, and vehicles; the new ‘usertrained’ AI solutions allow operators to train their cameras to detect user-defined objects including potential hazards such as boxes and signs on a shop floor, and traffic cones across a road. However, that’s not to say that you can simply bring these machine-learning features to your organisation and expect them to instantly work — or be entirely accurate. Your team will still need to train the recognition models with the best available images that include a chosen object and with enough data to get the best results. The camera’s field-of-view and background also need to be clear enough for the algorithm to differentiate between background and object.

Know what objects to train on How user-defined object detection will be a game changer for video surveillance, by Pread Um (Suk Bong), Product and Marketing Director, Hanwha Vision Europe

A

few years ago, it was hard to imagine how ubiquitous AI would eventually become in our lives. We thought AI was the mainstay of science fiction novels. Now, a huge shift in the accessibility and ease of set-up for AI is making it possible for those with little-to-no coding knowledge to use AI in many different applications. With AI becoming simpler to set up by laypeople, it’s little surprise that 1.3 million businesses in the UK are expected to adopt the technology by 2040. Video surveillance is no exception, with pre-trained AI cameras enabling operators to gain greater insight and context from camera footage. Now, Hanwha Vision is taking this a step further, with user-defined object detection in some of its cameras that make it easy for security teams to train algorithms with just a few clicks and image uploads.

Focus on doing one or two objects well, so the machinelearning algorithms can achieve good results from many images of those objects 46

EDIT - Hanwha.indd 1

New camera capabilities, such as Hanwha Vision’s WiseDetector solution, offer flexibility to detect objects based on project and situational requirements. But that doesn’t mean you should pick a wide range of objects to train your models on. Instead, focus on doing one or two objects well, so the machine-learning algorithms can achieve good results from many images of those objects. Prioritise what objects need to be detected most often by your organisation. In a restricted area, supporting access control by training your system to recognise open versus closed doors could prove advantageous, for example. User-defined object detection is, of course, applicable to just about any industry, including retail, fast food chains, banks, transport, museums, factories, and hospitals. It can detect logos on vehicles entering and exiting a site, specific boxes and logos in a warehouse, or cones posing a possible obstruction on a road.

Easy-to-use Solutions such as WiseDetector use a simple interface (in this case Device Manager) to make it easy for users to capture frames that feature the object for detection, and then mark the object for the machine-learning model to learn from. Users simply need to collect images that include a target object to train the machine-learning

model to recognise it. The more, the better, and you must also consider the quality of the images being uploaded. You want them to be as clear as possible, ideally showing the object from different angles, to help the machine-learning model really ‘understand’ what it is looking for. You can also retrain the system and refine its capabilities to get ever better results.

One of many advances These machine-learning, user-trained features are just one of a host of advances happening in CCTV today. Increasingly, machine-learning and AI are present in video surveillance – and this can only be a positive development thanks to the many benefits they bring to security and wider operations. These include being able to easily and quickly search through video to identify objects and people of interest, as well as spotting possible antisocial or criminal behaviour. Alongside user-trained features, expect more Edge AI – where analysis happens locally on a device – coming to market and deep-learning algorithms. Deep-learning algorithms reduce false alarms by accurately detecting predefined objects, such as people and vehicles,

while ignoring irrelevant motion including from wind-blown trees, shadows, or animals.

Time to get involved No doubt, it is an exciting time to leverage AI to improve your video security. That might be through training a machine-learning algorithm to detect objects or installing Edge AI devices with pre-installed algorithms. And, the current developments are a small slice of what machine-learning and AI can bring to the video surveillance industry. As the sector undergoes rapid transformation, who knows what the next decade will bring.

Machine-learning, user-trained features are just one of a host of advances happening in CCTV today
