On and off again It’s not a good time to try and organise any kind of event at the moment as the organisers of IFSEC and Firex have been all to aware of since the previous shows in 2019

s we went to press with this edition the news filtered through that IFSEC International 2021, pencilled in for midJuly at ExCeL London, had been cancelled and the next show was being planned for 2022. This is a great shame, but due to lockdowns and government measures to contain Covid since March 2020 the show has been off and on again more than Joshua vs Fury so it didn’t really come as a huge surprise. We all know that IFSEC is a global event attracting visitors from all over the world - one of its three days is widely referred to as International Day - and the word “International” in its title gives it away, so the restrictions on travel and traffic light schemes for entire countries meant that by the time the show was officially cancelled for 2021 there were very few overseas exhibitors remaining on the list for taking part and likely very few people able to travel to visit the event from abroad. The official statement came from Chris Edwards, Group Director at Informa Markets, who said: “We’ve worked tremendously hard along with our venue and contractor partners to deliver an event that is both safe and successful for all involved, but it’s become clear that with the ongoing international travel disruption and general uncertainty caused by the pandemic that transitioning to a vibrant online experience that the whole international security community can be part of is the right thing to do.” And indeed it is the right thing to do when there is so much involved in staging a successful show for exhibitors, visitors, presenters and organisers. Back in our April edition we spoke to Informa’s Gerry Dunphy about the uncertainties that lay ahead for the staging of the event and he was quite candid about the problems the show was facing. He was also keen to point out that an “In Person” way of doing business wasn’t going to be the only IFSEC platform going forward: “IFSEC Connect 2021 is our approach to hosting a virtual event, but not like what people may have been used to seeing previously. We want Connect 2021 to be a platform focused on online meetings supported by four separate days of content. The model moving forward will be to provide a blend of online and inperson events.” So by the time you are reading this IFSEC Connect will be in full swing and you may have taken part and found the ‘virtual’ experience quite refreshing and rewarding. To be honest, looking at some of the mainstream media news coverage recently, it looks like plenty of people have forgotten how to socially interact with others “in-person” anyway... As a nation we are so close to seeing an end to Covid restrictions, but for IFSEC it was just too close to call for 2021. Andy Clutton EDITOR 5

Tether Technology has partnered with DeepAlert to bring artificial intelligence to its range of CCTV cloud technology which integrates all surveillance devices across multiple sites with cloud analytics to visually interpret events. The Tether platform brings all physical security devices into a single visual dashboard. The system automatically detects and manages all cameras connected to the Local Area Network, stores images from selected cameras and provides a secure VPN to the cloud platform. Tether is non-proprietary with an open API platform and will integrate with any other security device it comes across.

DeepAlert adds to Tether’s system by bringing AI to the UK surveillance market, changing how people can monitor and manage their environments. With traditional video analytics alarms may be triggered by foliage blowing in the wind, pets, or authorised people on the scene. Object identification is critical in reducing the number of false alarms. DeepAlert makes use of both motion triggers and object detection using deep learning models using neural network technology to process and determine whether the video image matches known classes of objects which it has been trained to identify. It is this deep learning process that ensures the accuracy of object detection.

David Arrowsmith and Ian Smith announce retirement plans and new structure QED has announced the planned retirement of its owners David Arrowsmith and Ian Smith who set up the business in 1997. Whilst the owners will retire with effect from 30 June 2021, they will retain ownership of the company. The retirement from the day-to-day operations marks the commencement of a planned succession, which will see QED’s current MD, Matt Philp taking overall operational and management responsibilities. As part of this restructure, the new strategic team will include Ian Garden, Sales Manager; Catherine Seddon, Marketing Manager; Andrew Judge, Finance Manager; Hannah Whittle, Operations Manager and Steve Constantine, Product Development Director. This team will allow QED to be more agile, whilst focusing on the most important areas of strategy and operational delivery with further changes to structures and positions throughout the company to come. A statement from David Arrowsmith and Ian Smith says: “In the last 20-plus years we have seen the business grow from strength to strength, weathering some difficult times and we have never been so grateful to our team who, responding to the recent unprecedented events, transformed and changed our company in just a few months to meet the challenges we all faced. This month Simon Banks talks to Georgia Riley, Associate Director of Ambush Security Systems. Established in 1998, Ambush is a leading provider of security solutions for both domestic and commercial customers in London and throughout the Home Counties. How are Ambush approaching the UK’s All IP (Digital Voice) project? We have been aware of the limited lifespan of PSTN for a number of years and we have already upgraded a lot of our systems to radio-only solutions, such as DigiAir Pro. Many of the remaining PSTN-connected systems in our portfolio are located in areas where mobile signal is limited and/or connecting to an aerial is a challenge along with historical panels that don’t have the facility for an IP connection. As the All IP project is now ramping up, we have made the decision to upgrade all remaining customers to an entirely new system, including a new panel and CSL Connected, radio-only. What challenges are you facing from your customers as part of this? Most of our customers have been with us for many years and they trust us. We aren’t a company that continually increases prices and have built a long-standing relationship with many of them. They know that if we insist on them investing more to upgrade their system, there is no other option. We are asking them to allow us to continue to provide them with great service, but at the same time give them some added benefits. Also, and most critically, it ensures we continue to protect their properties. Our focus is to make sure the system can continue to send its signals to the ARC and the Police. Some of the systems are over 30 years old, they’ve not done badly to survive the years! Can you tell us more about the added benefits a new system can provide? For me the ease of use for the new systems is a big selling point. If an alarm is triggered on a new panel, it will then tell you what area has been activated with even things like adding codes and reviewing logs being straight forward. Another huge advantage is the facility to have hybrid systems, and being able to add additional detection without the hassle of cables is a huge bonus. This combined with the accessibility and visibility provided via the end-user Apps makes upgrading a really intriguing prospect for a customer. Their security system becomes so much more than just a safekeeping measure. A client is able to check to see if the cleaner visited today or if the children are in from school. It helps to give them more control of their world, without compromising on the reliability they depend upon. The App users tend to be a mix of those who use them regularly and some that just want it for the push notifications. How important is Police response? This is something we insist all our monitored customers opt for, for us it is a no-brainer. As a company we have always experienced exceptional levels of response from the Police whenever we have any confirmed alarms. It is an unparalleled service. By upgrading the remainder of our PSTN systems to radio we are also able to upgrade their URNs, ensuring our customers are compliant with the most up to date regulations. For those customers on a single path PSTN solution, who want to continue to have their property monitored, we need to do the full upgrade. When faced with the loss of police response we’re asked to upgrade them as soon as possible!

A handover process is performed using the installer software that ensures that the installer cannot make changes to the system without the owner’s permission. In addition to the mounting screws, adhesive pads are provided for a number of the detectors, however, their use as a fixing method would void Grade 2 standard.

he AX Pro can be purchased as a kit or individual components. The reviewed system was a DS-PWA96-Kit1-WE kit with the seven parts as listed. It is a wireless Grade 2 alarm system that can be used stand-alone or integrated into a management system. Additional modules are available to link to home automation products and systems. The DS-PWA96-M-WE panel supports up to 32 areas and 96 zones. This is the only part of the kit that must be mains powered (100 – 240v AC 50/60Hz 0.3A Max.) and this is supported by a 4520mAh lithium battery for up to 12 hours backup.

The installer app allows devices to be added by either scanning the QR code on the device or entering its reference details. Its configuration settings can then be accessed and set. While the panel does support a web server, it appears you must set the initial connection using the app and then use those credentials to log into the device browser. The documentation does not appear to provide any means to simply use a browser for configuration. There is a convoluted setup process that is not always helped by the documentation; the two-stage installation and user app approach can be frustrating but with regular use would be manageable. While the app does give some useful support videos these are open channel so can be interrupted by unannounced adverts and annoying promotional banners.

Hardware Getting started

The installer app allows devices to be added by either scanning the QR code on the device or entering its reference details. Its configuration settings can then be accessed and set 12

The various components are only supplied with a “User Manual” sheet that gives limited information in multiple languages; however, a QR code gives access to the latest full manuals from the Hikvision website. The main panel is supplied with a mains power lead, 3 tags and 4 screws with wall plugs. Its removable rear panel is used to mount it to the wall and the panel then slides onto this and can be secured by two captive crosshead screws. At the rear of the panel are the 2 pole mains connector, an RJ45 network connector, 2 x SIM sockets and a pair of 4 pole connectors with one marked as COM but these do not appear to be referenced in the manuals. Initial setup is performed by the installer using the Hik-ProConnect app. This can be downloaded from the usual Android and iOS stores or accessed via the QR codes on the panel’s box. It gives access to all of the configuration options and can be used to manage multiple sites. Individual system users will use the Hik-Connect

Five device types were provided for the test as follows: Main panel – This is a neat, square, wall-mounted panel of 170mm x 170mm with a depth of just 38.6mm. Its weight is approximately 558 grams. Battery recharge time is given as 4 hours to attain 80%. Current draw is 340mA when on battery or without an alarm and rises to 405mA on alarm. A low voltage message is given when the voltage drops to 3.55V. Three proximity tags are provided in the box and these can be programmed to arm / disarm the system as an Operation tag or to upload a record as a Patrol tag. The two SIM sockets allow for secondary alarm channels to be added, with data limits for each. PIR detector – conventional appearance with a single CR123A 3V battery for power for an expected 5 years. A single captive crosshead screw retains the front panel. Inside are the power and tamper switches. Drill holes are available for flat wall or corner mounting or alternatively an optional bracket may be used. Before use the PIR must be “formatted” by holding down the

tamper switch for 8 seconds at first power on. The red LED flashes three times to confirm success. The device has an 85.9° detection angle and a 15metre range (12 metre EN compliant). Sensitivity can be set to Auto, High or Pet (up to 30kg) via the app. Magnetic detector – a small unit of 103mm length and around 23mm square with a magnet of 34.4 x 13 x 11.4mm. Battery life expected to be up to 5 years. The manual shows a diagram that suggests a screw holds the cover in place, but the device has a small indent in this location that gives the impression of a push point. Unhelpfully the supplied document states “Dig the groove to disassemble the device”. It is held with plastic clips so a very careful removal by a small blunt flat screwdriver removes the cover without damage if caution is used. Within the device a power switch is used to turn the unit on. This device also has a formatting requirement but in this case is just a matter of holding down the tamper switch while powering on and waiting until the red LED flashes three times. Enrolment is simply a matter of reading the QR code or entering the device data into the Hik PRO Connect installer app. Two external inputs can be fed into this device via a 4-pole connector, with a mating plug and lead supplied. External sounder – with a plastic IP65 enclosure of 190 x 200 x 47.3mm and a weight of just 607 grams, the unit is powered by 4 CR123A 3V batteries and is stated to have a battery life of around 3 years, assuming it’s triggered once every two weeks for 90 seconds a time. Sound level is given as 110dB but can be software reduced. A single captive crosshead screw holds the cover in place. This can be quite tricky to remove when new due to the close-fitting casing but would be much easier when wall mounted. The cover design allows for it to be hung from the base during servicing. This external unit can optionally be 12 Volt powered but that would then remove its EN compliance. A spirit level is included in the base to aid installation. This unit also has an 8 second tamper hold formatting requirement at power-up before it is enrolled. Keyfob – this is a 4-button device of around 64 x 35 x 12mm weighing 16g. It is powered by a CR2032 3V button cell that has an expected life of 3 years. A 3-colour LED shows status and it is

given on operational range in free space of 900 metres. This item is simply enrolled onto the system by scanning the QR code and pressing any of the four buttons. These buttons are for Away arming, Disarming, Status check and Stay arming. Buttons can be software configured individually or in combination for specific actions such as Panic alarm or Garage door control. Additional devices are available, such as a wireless keypad, a PIR Camera, wireless internal sounder, tag reader, repeater, wall switch, and a relay module. To conserve battery power the PIR camera provides a configurable 1 to 10 still frames at up to 640 x 480 pixels. Other devices such as Panic buttons, PIR-Glass break detectors, Smoke and Water leakage detection and Smart plugs are suggested on the UK website, but limited information is currently available.

Performance Once installed and configured the system performs well with simplicity of setting and unsetting the alarm for both home and away modes. The panel provides a “voice guide” audio feedback of status changes such as “System armed” in a female American accent, the volume can be adjusted using the app. Users of the app can monitor the status of their devices along with battery level and connection signal strength. A “Find me” option allows all devices to be identified in complex systems, by flashing their LED. All such test modes run for a maximum of 3 minutes to conserve battery power. Video clips from IP cameras can be associated with alarm events. The vocal feedback from the panel is particularly useful during alarm setting as it clarifies any devices that are in fault or active mode that may prevent effective setting. Device range is very good but will depend on building structures.

Conclusion A compact grade 2 wireless alarm system with extended battery duration and flexible remote management. The product is well suited to central monitoring with a range of protocols supported. A reasonably wide and increasing range of detector types with scope for integration with homeautomation systems.

o celebrate its 100th anniversary this year Master Lock launched a special edition “Collector’s Padlock” that comes with a free Key Chain. This limited-edition padlock features a sturdy 54mm laminated steel body and can reportedly withstand outdoor climates, offering maximal resistance against prying attempts. For cut resistance, the padlock is made from a 29mm tall, 8mm diameter hardened boron alloy shackle. Additionally, its four-pin cylinder prevents picking attacks, and its dual ball-bearing locking mechanism offers robust protection. All of which results in the padlock gaining a Master Lock security level rating of nine out of ten, which means the company says it is ideal for securing garden sheds, gates, heavy-duty equipment etc. To commemorate the 100-year Anniversary the padlock is adorned with the brand’s emblematic lion head, a logo which was recreated for the celebration, acting as a reminder of the brand’s values: strength, courage, and resilience.

The padlock is rather similar in looks to the design of the six-pin, 65mm wide 6127EURD Pro Series unit and the five-pin, 38mm wide 911DPF available in the US, but the 1921 EURD is a fourpin cylinder lock with a 54mm wide reinforced laminated steel body which has enough weight to it to make it feel quite sturdy. The protective cap underneath the lock, which keeps out rainwater, fits very snugly over the key access point and may need a strong nail or even a screwdriver to remove until it has had some working. The key slides in very smoothly and the bolt is sprung so there is some resistance when turning the key to the right. The shackle is not spring loaded so turning the key will not make the lock spring open, instead you need to pull on the unit to release the shackle and keep the key turned. To close the unit, the key does not need to be in place, so the shackle can be returned into the body for dual ball bearing locking without the need to have the key turned at the same time.

Conclusion As already mentioned this is not a brand new design of unit for Master Lock but it does differ from the similarly looking padlocks with its specification. The cylinder could have been a higher spec than four-pin for the lock as it is a special edition, but at the same token, it is a commemorative lock from Master Lock, it is not meant to be taken as their ultimate lock. The return of the original lion branding gives the unit a classic look and the addition of the key ring is a nice touch. The Master Lock 1921EURDCC 100th Anniversary Collector Padlock is available from a variety of retailers with a suggested retail price from £26. Chances are this sturdier than average padlock will more than fulfil any requirements put upon it when securing sheds, gates and storage boxes etc, but as it is a special edition, maybe buy an extra one and leave it all packaged up for a future episode of Flog It!

Don’t just sit there! This month PSI talks to Tom Ford of the BSIA about why installers need to get involved with the Association to help shape the future of the industry om Ford is the Membership Development Manager at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). He is responsible for growing overall membership and providing support to the Association’s existing members. PSI caught up with him to find out why the Association is targeting systems installation companies.

What does the BSIA offer for installers? We work with member companies that span the length and breadth of the security industry and a large proportion of our members reside within the Security Systems section with a focus on installation. We work with these members in a lot of ways to support their part in the industry; to drive and develop standards, to lobby on their behalf, to raise perceptions, tackle difficult issues and to work with their businesses to raise their profile and support their growth, celebrate best practice and really try to give them a commercial edge where we can as well. There are a lot of things we can do for our installer members. Are there any common concerns that installers bring to you? I think that ‘concerns’ probably isn't the right word, but there are some factors that regularly require our help. Tendering is something that members often come to us about; from my time with the BSIA many security installation companies have come to us for membership to fulfil tender requirements. People know that our joining requirements are robust and the application process isn't easy, so it makes complete sense that other organisations want to incorporate the BSIA into their tender processes. Standards is another area that we provide a lot of help with. The Association is made up of many active sections giving a holistic representation of the industry. Security installers have a tough job adhering to so many rigorous standards, I think that's fair to say, but their importance can't be underestimated. There are a lot of young companies out there that need support and guidance at the beginning, and what better time to help shape the future of the industry than at the start of the journey in

the sector. A desire for installation companies to align themselves with other strong, professional companies is what I see happening rather than people bringing us concerns. When it comes to the BSIA plenty of people will think of Skills for Security. How important is training in the sector? Skills for Security is a wholly owned subsidiary of the BSIA and it's growing under the leadership of David Scott, going from strength to strength. We're working with an increasing number of companies throughout all of our designated sections. The industry is so vast and its many requirements need to be taken care of from a training perspective in order to fill in the skills gap that we all know about, particularly when it comes to systems installation. The BSIA through Skills for Security is at the heart of that drive to enable installation companies to develop more skilled engineers and maintain technology awareness. You also work with systems manufacturers. Is most of that work along the lines of helping with standards and overseas promotion? It is in part. We have 14 active sections of the BSIA working with companies in security systems, security equipment manufacturers, security officer services, training providers and everything in between. We support our systems manufacturers in the development of Standards, best practice guidance and overseas promotion by way of our Export Council. But in addition to all of that we have technical working groups, supporting the design and delivery of important subject matter to our membership base being carried out all of the time. During your time in the industry what have been the positive/negative changes across the sector? My time in security has been relatively brief as I'm about 18 months or so into it now, but I cut my teeth as a fire protection engineer and from there I moved into professional bodies and trade associations. In my experience I've seen that the industry is absolutely filled with people who are passionate about what they do. They are only

too aware that if we stand still, we're moving backwards; things change and evolve constantly in this industry, more so than in most industries in my opinion. For example, you see legislation, technology, standards and best practice changing all of the time. A positive that I see if how our members act selflessly to better the industry for everyone and they welcome changes as opportunities to grow and learn. Other positives include the development of ECHO and the growth of Skills for Security. Is the skills gap the main negative you've seen? It is certainly something that needs addressing, but I like to focus more on positives than negatives. I work from a really wonderful position where I get to see what happens across each of the BSIA sections and okay, there are some negative stories out there, but for every negative there are two positives. For me, there are more positives to be celebrated than there are negatives to be concerned about. What do you think the long-term picture will be for British companies regarding Brexit? The best part of my job is that I'm surrounded by some really great people and I think for me to best answer that question fairly answer that question I'm going to tell you a couple of things that I've recently been told. Simon Banks of CSL who is Chairman of the BSIA said to me that the security industry isn't recession-proof but it's certainly recession resilient. It's a huge industry that nobody knows about until you're in it and its constantly evolving and growing. One of our member companies said to me in April that everybody thought that business and the economy would come to a grinding halt when the pandemic hit, but it did no such thing. The security industry took stock, pivoted and repositioned itself to meet the new demands and working arenas. So my answer is, if you think about those statements and then think about an industry worth £billions filled with passionate, dedicated and talented people, technology changes, emerging markets with demands that ebb and flow. I don't know what the long-term impact that Brexit is going to have, but what I do know with absolute cast-iron certainty, is that this industry is strong, and it will stand up to anything that comes its way with professionalism and most of all, solidarity. Look how well we all re-positioned over the last year; I hear nothing but positive

views on this industry in that we will continue to change and will continue to grow. Some of the best security companies in the world are British - we set the standard for so much as to what "good" looks like, what best practice is and what we should be doing as a minimum requirement in certain sectors within the industry. I don't think Brexit is going to change that. Money's always tight and people have to prioritise where they think they are best off spending so what is the future for trade associations? My advice to anybody looking to align themselves with a strong trade association is that now is a good time to do it. In the face of all of the uncertainty, the changes we have seen and are yet to see, a strong trade association holds the line for a lot of companies and offers solidarity, a voice and guidance during difficult times. My advice would be to align yourself and actively engage with your chosen trade association because value is directly proportionate to engagement. It's as simple as that. So if you choose the BSIA, come and talk to me and my team, if it's any other association, make sure that you are prepared to engage with them. The last thing you want is to sit on the sidelines and then react after the event. If you want to help to shape the direction of the professional security industry, you need to have a voice and engage to see value from your investment with membership. Don't just take my word for it, ask current members about what they get out of it and get involved.

LET’S CONNECT THIS MONTH! For the whole of June 2021, IFSEC Connect will be bringing security industry people together without them leaving their place of work. Here we take a closer look at the new virtual event from the people behind the UK’s biggest security event and how you can get involved

or most of the last twelve months there has been quite considerable uncertainty about the possible staging of trade shows in the UK. This meant that in 2020 there was no IFSEC International at ExCeL in London so the people behind the show began to develop a new way for the sector to get together and network, preview new technology and discuss the latest trends and, essentially, do business. The result of all of the hard work is IFSEC Connect which, according to Gerry Dunphy, the Event Director for Fire and Security at Informa, is intended to become an annual event along with the in-person IFSEC International and Firex events held in London. So what’s it all about?

IFSEC Connect runs from 1st – 30th June

Running from June 1st IFSEC Connect is an entirely online, virtual event with the main purpose of encouraging and facilitating video meetings. What it is not, is a virtual trade show with simulated stands and avatars dotted about the place. “We want Connect 2021 to be a platform focused on online meetings supported by four separate days of content,” explains Gerry Dunphy. “The event will provide customers with a chance to meet with suppliers, host online discussions, browse product videos and exchange contact details. Each exhibitor will have a 3D booth which they can tailor to their own requirements and the idea will be that the "stands" are more like a shop window focusing

on products and videos and parties will be able to send out meeting requests.” The idea is that once you have registered and logged in via the event platform you can set up a profile for others to see who you are, what it is that you are keen to hear about plus your contact info. A personalised dashboard offers potential matches for meetings based on your interests, the event agenda and your schedule so you can keep on top of any booked times and dates. But the event is not just about networking there are dedicated days focusing on specific technologies and trends coupled with Tech Talks which give you an opportunity to get up close with new technology and innovations via online product demos. “On the content side we've got three dedicated days, which will focus on video surveillance, access control and intruder detection with a fourth day on which we will cover protecting cities,” says Gerry. “We have surveyed the video surveillance, access and intruder industries to give us the research for live panel discussions covering each of the surveys. We’ll also have a morning of related Tech Talks. The topic on 1st June will be video, with access control on the 2nd June and then intruder on the 3rd, so we're really building the content around the meetings platform.”

Meet the installer What would be a typical project for you? A typical project for us varies from small to large domestics or commercial properties. Each site will require different levels of security based on their location or insurance requirements. Being a London based company gives us the opportunity to work on a different variation of properties across the city and the surrounding counties. Is third party accreditation beneficial? For us third party accreditation is confirmation of our high standards. What I do feel is lacking is the standing that gives us out in the real world. Unless a customer has high value contents in their premises our NSI accreditation means very little to the common man or woman. Greater backing from insurance companies or more advertising amongst the general public would make the accreditation worth more. What is the best thing about working in this industry? Every site and client is unique and will have different requirements, and with that brings a new challenge! We are always looking to install the latest technology available to us to fulfil the client’s requests. For me personally I take great satisfaction knowing that we have secured someone’s home, especially after a bad experience, knowing that our proposal has been expertly installed by one of our dedicated members of the team. For CCTV we use a wide selection of the Dahua and HikVision range, with the latest technology being the full colour range which has been a big hit with our clients! The ability to identify the colour of clothing or a vehicle in the dark of night is a must, not only for

the client but for the local authority. Not surprisingly we have seen a high demand for this technology. For access control and entryphone systems we use Paxton and CAME BPT, which we have used since I started in the industry, their product reliability and technical support is by far the best available. Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry? Absolutely, we have found it incredibly hard over the years to recruit from existing trained engineers. They get swallowed up by the larger firms or recruited straight from college. We have found it far more successful to train apprentices in house, it has the added benefit that we can mould that engineer to follow our standards and there are no bad habits to overcome. We are a perfect example of how to successfully run a business and train from within, I should know as I am a product of this! Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Not really, with the progression of technology over the last few years there isn’t a lot that isn’t accessible to all customers now. What would make your job easier? Not sure, being in the industry for so long and having worked my way from an apprentice I have the technical knowledge behind me to be able to offer a solution for all projects, whether it be wired or wireless. But for working in London possibly some sort of teleportation device to help me avoid the traffic! What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? So far the impact hasn’t been too great. together raising standards back to the value of accreditation though, if a customer can buy a cheap alarm system from Amazon that they can fit themselves that has similar functions to our systems, what value do accredited companies then have? If home insurance policies required an accredited company to install and maintain a security system this would help solidify the value of companies like ours. What is the industry’s biggest myth? That a monitored system is not worthwhile as ‘the police are not interested or do not turn up!’ A large percentage of our systems are monitored by the metropolitan police who have a seven-minute response time to a confirmed alarm or hold-up alarm. Usually they are there sooner as we know from clients who have phoned us to say how quickly they have responded. What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic security/fire product? The products available now are fantastic and I wish were available to me when I was an engineer. Having reliable wireless alarm system have always been on the top of my list and we now have that. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? I have always been focused in what I do and have always taken pride in my work. As I tell the engineers who started at the same level as me nothing is unachievable as long as you have a positive working attitude. At 34 years young I have a wife and three kids so life is busy in and out of work so maybe the advice I would offer would be to enjoy it as time will pass quickly, plus

enjoy the hair line as that doesn’t last long either! Will England ever win the World Cup again?

Yes, without a doubt. We have the best league in the world and that will only benefit the youth coming through, unless VAR takes it away from us. All I can say is I’m thankful VAR wasn’t around in 1966 otherwise we would be still waiting now. If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? Probably go on a once in a lifetime holiday with the family. Like a safari adventure or hire a top of the range motor home in the US and drive route 66. If I can take any positives from the last twelve months it is to enjoy the time I have with them as you do not know what is next over the horizon!

Beating the competition David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security, gives us an overview of how WorldSkills and Engineers of Tomorrow are improving standards and raising awareness - and also how you and your installation team can get involved

orldSkills UK (WSUK) is a trade competition that brings together the best apprentices across the UK to compete in their respective sectors. Almost all trades imaginable are represented at WSUK. There are competitions in welding, electrical, joinery, floristry and hairdressing. But prior to 2019, there was no representation of the electronic security sector. Which in my own personal opinion, was an opportunity missed. For as long as I can remember, the security sector has had a skills shortage with a desperate need to attract new people into the sector. WSUK allows us to attract school leavers directly into the sector, where in 2019, over 70K young people attended WSUK over the 3-day event. In 2019, Skills for Security were appointed competition organising partners of the electronic security competition at WSUK. This means that we worked with the sector, colleges & training providers and more importantly, the Engineers of Tomorrow committee to design, develop and run both the WSUK competition and the Engineers of Tomorrow competition. Registration for this year's competition cycle is now open; any interested parties can apply here. This year's cycle includes an online regional passive competition, which will see an expected 100 apprentices across the whole of the UK register to take part. 24 of the 100 registered

competitors will be selected to attend Engineers of Tomorrow in July, where they will compete in a gruelling 6-hour competition, assessed by NSI and SSAIB inspectorates. The competition at Engineers of Tomorrow is the semi-final for WSUK and will see the learners complete a takeover of a previously installed system. In this system, competitors will identify non-compliances and use approved techniques to rectify these issues, then they will add new devices to the system as per specification and finally carry out a full and compressive commission and handover. Eight winners from Engineers of tomorrow will be selected to compete at the National Finals in November, in a 3-day competition, where one lucky person will be announced as the 2021 electronic security WorldSkills champion and receive a £1000 cash price at the Security Excellence Awards in London. This year's competition will be the first full competition cycle. So far, we have a number of leading FESS providers engaged – Banham Academy, New College Lanarkshire, GTG, Hopwood Hall, SERCs, Belfast Met, Gowrie College Swansea and Skills for Security with 60 applicants registered already. This year WSUK competition cycle is sponsored by CSL, Hik Vision and Texecom; without their continued support, this couldn't occur.

Protection and detection Recent news surrounding cyber gangs and ransom payments have once again highlighted how carrying a shotgun into a bank is no longer the high returns crime du jour for those determined to break the law

n mid-May it was widely reported that a US fuel pipeline company paid a cyber-criminal gang nearly $5m (£3.6m) in ransom, following a cyber-attack. Later in the week, Toshiba revealed that its European division (based in France) had been hit by the same cyber-criminal gang. While Toshiba reported that no data was leaked as a result of the attack, saying that the end result was just the loss of “a minimal amount of data”, the attack on the pipeline was far more serious. According to BBC reports ,the closure saw supplies of diesel, petrol and jet fuel tighten across the US, with prices rising and a number of states declaring an emergency. In a statement, the cyber gang responsible, DarkSide, said: "Our goal is to make money and not create problems for society." A few days later it was reported that the Irish health service had to temporarily shut down its IT system to protect it after an attack. This event saw its data being encrypted with the threat that it would only be made available once a ransom had been paid. Being able to anonymously and remotely attack a company and then ask for payment in a crypto currency makes IT cyber crime much more appealing to those bent on raising money illegally and presents no physical threat to themselves in the way their criminal predecessors would have faced when using weapons or close proximity methods of robbery. So is everyone at risk from cyber attack? Well we are if we any value to our business and could be strongarmed into paying up. Companies are also at risk the more items they place onto their networks and how secure these devices are. That’s why many of you will have have tense conversations with IT managers regarding putting IP cameras onto a network. As with many aspects of modern society, CCTV on a network can be as vulnerable to cyberattackers as any other connected device if best practice is not followed. That's a problem in a society with a reliance on IP technology especially given the widespread adoption of DIY home security cameras fitted by the homeowner. If you install closed-circuit security systems there may be risks involved that you need to know

While CCTV certainly isn't hopelessly flawed, these risks are important, and many manufacturers of professional cameras have recognised this with schemes such as Cyber Essentials and Secure by Default helping to provide protection. For a long time, the major security issues regarding CCTV were pretty rudimentary. For example, when organisations stockpiled huge archives of material from workplaces and public spaces, external thieves or internal employees could steal these tapes and use them for nefarious purposes like blackmail. But according to experts we spoke to at VPNpro, today's threats go further. The major reason they say is due to the expansion of the Internet of Things. Modern security camera configurations, especially on selfinstalled cameras are connected to apps and central networks remotely via WiFi and Bluetooth. This is great from an operational perspective, allowing close control, automated alerts, customised analysis and archiving, and cost savings. But it's also a security concern. The primary issue regarding IoT connected CCTV revolves around DDoS attacks. These attacks are intended to bombard targets with requests. As these requests mount, they effectively overload the devices concerned, taking them offline. If the attacking agent is concealed well enough, this can be very, very hard to eradicate, and restoring affected systems can take days. IoT connected cameras are prime targets for DDoS attacks, at least when they are

unsecured. Without encryption or firewalls, attackers can access the firmware controlling cameras using WiFi networks. Then, it's relatively simple to inject malware onto the cameras, which starts the DDoS ball rolling. In some cases, poorly protected cameras were used to create vast BotNets for subsequent attacks on external targets. Instead of taking CCTV systems offline with precision assaults, these attacks steadily drained their networks, eventually taking cameras out of action due to the weight of activity. The dangers here are pretty obvious. If someone wants to access a building and doesn't want to be detected, they can use DDoS attacks on CCTV to render surveillance inoperative. And if BotNet operators want a large number of devices with weak security, they will continue to target cameras. CCTV security risks aren't just concerned with the cameras themselves. As IoT connected devices, they are often the weakest link, but attackers struggle to use them as a gateway to wider networks. Sadly, that's not necessarily the case for the servers that companies use to archive the material generated by CCTV systems. When video footage is gathered via CCTV, a huge amount of personal data can be collected. Sometimes, this remains "raw". Sometimes, it's processed and analysed via tools like facial recognition, or to ascertain behavioral patterns in the people being surveilled. Not every camera operator understands that this data represents an appealing target for hackers. One of the most common behavioral biases exhibited by security professionals is to focus on securing perimeters against human threats while neglecting the back end - the software and databases that store footage. Without firewalls, rigorous malware screening, and the implementation of cybersecurity tools like VPNs, this back end is a sitting duck, waiting to be shot down by opportunist attackers.

This means that security professionals need to combine attention to IoT perimeter defense, as well as digital security on a software level. Neglect one, and the other is bound to haunt you, VPNpro told PSI. Finally, CCTV systems can fall victim to attacks based around one of their core strengths: the use of infrared light to capture night footage and maximise situational awareness. This is often one of the risks that shocks users the most, especially when it's explained that IR based attacks can infiltrate "air-gapped" networks that separate IT systems and cameras to prevent leakage between them. But it's a very real technique, and one that's hard to defend against. Attackers can use IR light to transmit information to security cameras with the ability to detect it. This light can encode commands that essential enslave cameras, providing instant access to their software. And that's not the end of the issue. IR light can also be used to exfiltrate data from CCTV networks. Hackers can position themselves a few metres away from a camera, and just absorb footage, or inject malware at their leisure. The truth is that while IP CCTV has become a security asset over the years we know that systems can be a vulnerable and not all CCTV installers are aware of the scope of possible attacks. It's time to change this. By tightening up encryption, perimeter defence, and network architecture, big strides can be made in securing cameras.

Increased complexity Of course while networked cameras in themselves can present cyber risks if installed and protected properly, the advances that we are seeing in surveillance capabilities can also present problems. In his predictions for 2021 Johan Paulsson, CTO at Axis Communications, said that horizontal integration increases the need for robust cybersecurity:“Due to the potential for high financial returns and disruption of critical infrastructure, new capabilities, tactics and threats will continue to emerge and require constant vigilance. AI will be employed by cybercriminals, strengthening their ability to find and exploit vulnerabilities. Deep fake videos will become even more sophisticated and realistic, potentially calling video surveillance evidence into doubt. As a result, further developments in methods to verify content, devices and applications in order to maintain trust in their authenticity will be required.” Essentially, as technology gets more complex so do the systems used to attack it.

Wellbeing best practice pt3 Here we continue the serialisation of the book “Five Practices of Wellbeing, from the Science of Wellbeing, for High Performance” by Cora Lynn Heimer Rathbone of Rathbone Results

Savour the Moment Happiness has a lot to do with being in-themoment, focused on what is happening right now. As if that was not enough, three benefits come from this wellbeing practice. First, though, a Chinese proverb: “If you chase two rabbits at once, you will catch neither.” I know - we all multitask a lot; but trying to do more than one thing at a time actually reduces the quality of our output. Factually, when we try to do two things at once, we actually simply flip quickly from one to the other and do neither as well as we could if we focused on each – one at a time. Savouring the moment raises awareness of that moment. Focus on the “one thing” you need to do well right now ensures you commit all your strengths to doing that to the best of your ability. So three benefits of savouring the moment and “being here now”: 1. Being aware of what is happening right now enables us to manage and direct our thinking key to driving our behaviors. By focusing our thoughts on the task before us, by savouring the moment and being HERE NOW, we “stay focused”. This applies equally in private & professional life.

Savouring the moment raises awareness of that moment. Focus on the “one thing” you need to do well right now ensures you commit all your strengths to doing that to the best of your ability 50

2. Being aware of what is happening right now helps us manage and focus our physical energy, be more “present”. For the extroverts amongst us, focusing on what we are doing right now is easier when we can share our thinking and doing with others. For the introverts amongst us, focusing on our own work is best when we can do so on our own. 3. Being aware of what is happening right now helps us moderate our moods. Managing emotional energy, our state of mind, determines our effectiveness and our quality of life. Mood can be an emotional thing – the consequence of recent events and how we react to them. Mood can also be a mind-set thing. Simple questions such as “What’s been my highlight today?” and “What have I learnt today from the up and down sides?” help us “be here now”, be better agents of our mood. Unless we have a clinical condition, we can choose the mindset we adopt going forward. We can be masters of our mood. We can choose to have a growth mindset – an “I can” and “I will” approach – which stimulates curiosity, builds resilience and well-being. How can we develop this practice of “being here now” and release Serotonin? • Turn off alerts from phone or laptop when working on a focused task • Set aside time each day or each week for doing work that requires our full attention. One senior coaching client decided to set aside 9:30-11:00 and 2:30 to 3:30 each day for “own work”. She informed all members of her team of this schedule to protect that time for the critical work that she personally had to deliver. Client issues coming straight from a client were acceptable interruptions. Another client put two hours a week in his diary as “D time” (his name being Derek) and protected it fiercely to ensure at least once a week he had time to order his thoughts “here now”. • Discipline ourselves to concentrate on the issue at hand – detailing a new strategy, redefining a client design, addressing a safety issue. Restrain ourselves from being our own worst distracter. • Walk regularly in the open air – even if only for five minutes of the lunch break. This makes us better able to savour the moment. We are much more in the “here now” when we return to ‘work’ after clearing our mind through a 5 minute walk in the fresh air. Several HBR

articles and research at Yale university indicate that mental agility, cognitive function and mental firepower are directly linked to our physical regime, and that being in nature adds an extra layer of benefit to any exercise we take, boosting our immune systems through fresh air. The same research shows that if we are about to take an exam or go to an interview, if we are about to enter an important meeting or start solving a tricky problem, going for a walk in nature or doing physical exercise will increase our results/scores/effectiveness. 14 different studies that measured the impact of exercise on mental performance found that exercise boosts performance in mathematical, linguistic and memory challenges. Why not start by: 1. Making a habit of taking a 5-10 minute lunchtime walk around the office building or plant – alone or with a colleague – at least three times a week. Choose a topic you want to focus on as you do your walk to be “here now”. Alternatively focus on one thing you see as you walk and savour the gift of that moment to return to work in a fresher frame of mind.

2. Plan a 30-45 minute walk every weekend – alone or with a loved one – and savour with your senses – your eyes, ears, nose, taste, touch. When things are multi-sensory, we tend to remember them better, giving us memories to be grateful for. Remember: “If you chase two rabbits at once, you will catch neither.” So savour the moment. Sharpen your awareness to be “here now” – to apply your strengths to “the one thing” now.

As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input in the test reports or results Western Digital – Purple 18TB HDD The Purple range of hard drives is designed for surveillance applications with a variety of capacities from 1TB up to 18TB. They are designed for 24-hour, all-year-round operation with an emphasis on continuous write-cycle time. The drive is said to support up to 64 HD cameras and is optimised for AI based read / write requirements with an additional 32 AI streams. Review: A very high-capacity drive with fast read & write access and multiple features to improve the storage and robustness of multi-camera surveillance recordings, especially where complex analytics and Deep Learning are utilised.

Ajax – Wireless Alarm System The Ajax alarm system is a wireless based EN50131 Grade 2 range of components that can be mixed and matched to suit a variety of home and office environments. Components are available in white or black finish to suit the décor of the site. Smartphone setup, management and monitoring along with extended battery life mean that the system is easy to install and use. Review: A wide range of detectors and simple set-up process makes for a potentially very quick installation. Good access to diagnostic information for monitoring purposes coupled with relatively straightforward battery changing.

Optex – BXS-AM Detector This is a wall or pole mountable IP55 outdoor “curtain” PIR intrusion detector that has dual narrow passive infrared detection zones either side of the device. Intended for example to cover side walls of buildings in order to trigger an alarm when people approach too close to the property. These side zones have a range of up to 12 metres, giving a coverage of up to 24 metres in total. Review: A very straightforward alarm device with clear operation and simple set-up. Apart from the reservations regarding cable entry and security of access the unit performs well and should prove easy to install.

Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1 This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light illumination from one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is centred on 850nm and a 940nm version is available on request. Power is by 4-Pair PoE or optionally through a separate 24v DC supply. Review: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not excessively flare on near objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the infrared had good even illumination over distance and allowed a good contrast range for subjects. Extremely versatile.

Review: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it weighs a ton it is actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect the effort required in everyday use of the door.

Lock manufacturer Mul-T-Lock has provided all seven of Barry’s fitness studios in London with its eCLIQ locks and over 100 accompanying keys in order to manage access rights across each studio. Astoria Fire and Security recommended the access control solution to help combat lost keys and achieve complex access requirements. Video streaming technology for autonomous ship Videosoft’s adaptive low bandwidth video streaming technology has been installed on the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) to help relay footage of the ship’s missions back to land. On its maiden voyage this spring, MAS will trace the route of the 1620 Mayflower, sailing from Plymouth, UK, to Plymouth, MA, only this time there will be no human captain or crew on board as the 15m, lightweight, hybrid-electric powered trimaran crosses the Atlantic. Videosoft’s technology will help capture footage from the Mayflower’s six onboard cameras at sea. Using satellite connectivity and compression technologies, footage will be transmitted back to AI developers and research scientists providing real-time feedback and visuals during the mission. It will also be used to

Major security systems upgrade for the City of Chelmsford During the summer of 2020 the City of Chelmsford and its surrounding parishes, initiated a major security systems upgrade. The city has grown significantly in recent years, and so has the requirement for enhanced security provision right across the catchment. Long-standing security partner Link CCTV Systems implemented, supplied and installed the new technology. The most recent enhancement of the Chelmsford CCTV system commenced in April 2020, days after the Government implemented restrictions to suppress the growth of Covid-19 infections. 200 new cameras were installed in strategic locations, including public parks, playing fields, community shopping centres, high streets, car parks and pedestrianised thoroughfares. This initiative alone increased the scope for security and safety surveillance by a factor of 20%, increasing the total camera count to over 500. Each camera in the city was upgraded to an HD variant, which is fed back to a central VMS. This improved the quality of the pictures relayed back to the Control Room and assists the operators in navigating the platform with ease. The Control Room itself, which was renovated during a previous Link CCTV upgrade, now hosts a number of 40” wall-mounted monitors which are overseen 24 hours a day throughout the year. The optical clarity of the monitors is not compromised when the footage is down-loaded. Notwithstanding Chelmsford’s renowned ‘Purple Flag’ safety status, the sharpness of the CCTV image quality has already proved both vital and significant in the provision of evidence for police investigations. Maldon District Council is a neighbouring authority to Chelmsford. A request from Maldon to help facilitate an upgrade of its analogue system to High Definition was duly approved. Accommodating all the council’s properties, these too were integrated into the Chelmsford system with round-the-clock coverage. The execution of Link CCTV’s implementation plan allowed the installation to be completed within three months, a month ahead of schedule. “This project was of particular interest to Link CCTV Systems, having supplied, installed and

maintained the City Centre CCTV systems of over 25 years,” said Ryan Mitchinson, Managing Director at Link CCTV Systems. “In 2016, we installed a new Flir VMS to manage the main city centre cameras and began the process of migrating all of the remote Parish Council and other public building systems across to the new platform. This phased migration was accomplished by 2018 after introducing 25 new servers across the city. “Whilst some of these upgrades included the replacement of the analogue camera modules, many continued to operate the original legacy analogue units.” When discussing the latest upgrade to Chelmsford City Council’s security systems, Ryan added: “During the latest phase of works, all of the city’s cameras were upgraded to HD whilst also introducing multiple new sites and High Street systems. It gave me great satisfaction to witness the final remote systems being connected to the main Chelmsford VMS, allowing the total CCTV camera count to exceed 500 units, all virtually mapped to allow every operator to easily navigate the platform.” The new technological improvements have not gone unnoticed by the on-site security team either: “The improved quality of the cameras has helped us and the Essex Constabulary in supplying clear footage and compelling evidence for prosecutions”, said Nicholas Hunt, CCTV Supervisor at Chelmsford City Council. “Having such good camera quality, especially when the light is low, has helped us capture evidence of offences.” Spencer Clarke, the Public Protection Manager at Chelmsford City Council commented: “The improvement in image quality has enabled us to pick up car index plates with relative ease. Having everything on one VMS platform and having consistent quality throughout is a really great asset.”

Using barox video switches as opposed to non-security data switches meant that we could have complete confidence in the speed, bandwidth and security of the network – no matter what the demands placed on it.” Ceaton Security installed 25 barox RY-LGSP2852/740 Managed Ethernet switches across six floors of the stadium, including the roof gantry. Designed to cater for the demanding requirements of HD video networks, the barox RY-LGSP2852/740 models deployed are a POE+ layer-2/3 switch, with L3 functionality suitable for video over IP and video streaming in multicast. At the heart of the building’s life-safety systems is a C-TEC CAST ZFP fire panel connected to over 100 CAST detectors, sounders, VADs and ancillary devices spanning over four floors. The master 2-loop ZFP panel is located in a storeroom but relays key system information to a Compact Controller in the reception area. The controller is highly visible and can be easily accessed by the fire and rescue service and authorised personnel if required. John Westerman, Director of Allied Fire Alarms, the company that specified, installed and commissioned the system said: “We chose CAST ZFP as the cornerstone of The Bear’s L2 BS 5839-1 system as it is powerful, intuitive and has the capacity to connect to multiple intelligent devices. Our client also had some specific requirements for fire detection in certain areas which were facilitated using CAST’s software and programming capabilities.”
